Android system recovery - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I go into the Android system recovery <2e>, I'm trying to reinstall packages but I get this error "E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory) Installation aborted". I have the update zip file stored on the sd card I get this error. Is there a work around this?

Are you sure the update.zip is in the correct location on your internal sd card? Stock recovery can only load update.zip from /sdcard/ which is the internal sd card (Default location of the Files app I believe). It can't be on the external sd card or in a folder.
That error means that the file doesn't exist at /sdcard/ so you probably have it in some other folder (or it's incorrectly named, it must be named update.zip exactly)

I can only get to the vibrant screen or the Android recovery screen. the update.zip file is compressed with a rar. extentionn. I can't get to the internal sd card because my laptop won't recognize my device and I can only get to the vibrant screen or Android recovery screen? any idea?

I think my only option to get to work if I can get to read off my external sd card?

uh there you have your source of problem "update.zip file is compressed with a rar. extentionn", it need to be in .zip format not rar. you may need to unrar it, and get the zip file from inside.
hope this help!!
you are luckier than I am, I am having tuff luck get in to stock recovery mode, with the buttons...aaaa hair falling off...

so i changed the file to zip and still did the same thing.

if i could only get read off the external sd card.

[Q] Clockwork mod .08 Install problems on Gtablet

Can't get clockwork mod .08 to install on my new Gtablet. It gets to the part where where it's unpacking the package and then continues on with the boot. IT never actually unpacks the package the progress bar never moves forward... just the static.
Before that because of Windows inserting Lost.dir it wouldn't even find the package.
Stuck is it something to do with the way I've formatted the micro sd card in windows ? I' formatted the micro sd with Fat32.
Would like to try out one of the boot images, any of them, but can't get past this deal breaker.
thanks.

When you unzip the cwm 0.8 file make sure that it's located on the root of the /sdcard or /sdcard2
Internal
/sdcard/update.zip
/sdcard/recovery/command
"command" file should have this line....--update_package=SDCARD:/update.zip
OR not both
External
/sdcard2/update.zip
/sdcard2/recovery/command
"command" file should have this line....--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip

Cannot get to download ClockworkMod...still freezes
I cannot get my computer to read the tablet first of all so I am using a SDcard. When I save the ClockworkMod to the sdcard and start the tablet (power and vol+) I get the Recovery key detected with the viewsonic screen then the gtablet screen then the white box with the arrow. Then it gives me the viewsonic, gtablet, tnt then black then tnt.....about 9 times then just black.
I am really frustrated and know that there is something really stupid that AI am forgetting or do not know to do.
Please help....

Restore Internal SD Card from zip ROM streak 5

Hello friends, how are you?
I'm from Portugal, and i have one nice strek 5 working great.
But i have another two, that don't boot, it stuck on delll Logo.
i think another my friends try to root or update, and fail.
it don't make any fast boot or streak mod.
so i disassemble to read its sd card.
because i'm using windows, so i install DiskInternalls Linux Reader to have acess to sd card files.
When mounted, its show two volumes, "Linux Ext Volume 1" and "Linux Ext Volume 2"
the firs one have 244 Mbs, and the other one have 1.65Gb
the small one have two folders, lost+found, recovery and a lot of jpeg files in root folder.
the second one, that have 1.65Gb, have a lot od folders and semms a lot of a zipped rom image.
Its possible just decompress and copy to the volume?
Thanks
If you format the card and put it back in the streak, it should set it up automatically. However, you will lose anything on it this way.
Ok. i will try..
but, it don't need to write some data in "boot area" ?
I'm asking that, becouse i download 3 roms, all ziped, but easy to see files, i also download streak mod, and has only one img file, it can't be unzipped..
my firts idea, was copy streak boot files, to card, but i can't acess it..
My assumption, and it is only an assumption, is there is some sort of actual rom memory on the phone that holds the lowest levels of the operating system. Maybe fastboot and the recovery menu, but not recovery itself. The rom actually resides on the internal sd card. When I put in my freshly formatted sd card, I simply rebooted the phone and I don't remember if it was automatic, or I had to confirm it, but the streak partitioned/formatted/whatever the internal sd card itself. I then flashed a recovery and a rom.
Hello.
like you said, i have insert a new sd card, but formated in FAT, i think thats the problem.
I try to load Linux Live CD, and format in ext2/3.
or try to copy rom directly file to sd card.
You think might work?
***EDIT***
I have format the card, and i have inserted into sreak and turn it on..
How much time is preparing the new card ?
and how i know that is ready to reboot?
thanks
I have created an image of my inner SD Card right after a factory reset.
Download Here
I created this using Clonezilla, you should be able to use Clonezilla to restore it. It is an image of the entire sd card. You need to unzip the downloaded file to use it.
Note: I am running DSC_Rom, which is Gingerbread based. I don't think it makes a difference.

Help for a newbie with CWM

Hey guys, I recently got the Galaxy SII. Its rooted running Android 2.3.5 GINGERBREAD.DUKJ1.
My issue is trying to run ZIP files from my SD card using ClockWorkMod. I put the files into the SD card root folder and then boot into CWM. When I go run zip file from SD card there is nothing there. CWM cant see any of my files.
I have sucessfully booted ZIPS by placing them in the Phone folder instead of the SD card folder. If I go into My files and then under sdcard/external_sd I can see the file I put on there. CWM just refuses to see these files. When I connect my phone I see 2 folders, Card and Phone. I am putting these zip files in Card. I assume this is correct? Can anyone help?
Cheers
mount ur int sd card
Thanks for the reply, while waiting for a reply I unmounted the SD card, formatted it and then remounted it. I dropped another zip file, once again made sure I could see it in file manager and it was there. Booted in CWM, went to install zip file, went to ext_sd folder and it still says no file found. Under storage the SD card is listed there. Any ideas?

Sounds like you are using version 4.x of CWM, this does not support native updating from dual memory (So it only ever looks at phone memory, while you can manually mount and then update it's not as simple a process and often steps get forgotten)... if you just update to the newer CWM you will see another option appear on the list (apply update from internal memory)... making it much clearer and easier to update. (Or just use your phone memory to hold the zip files, it really doesn't matter that much)
I think you are right, it says v4.0.0.2. Would someone be kind enough to point me to where the latest version is?
Edit- nevermind I think I found it.
Thanks guys

This question is not relevant, as he is referring to Recovery Mode. (Debugging is only optional through normal OS, and can not be changed in recovery without rebuilding the kernel)
Everything is all good guys, the new version of CWM allows me to boot from my SD card and it installed ICS perfect. Thanks again

See Folders but not files in file viewers

I am posting here 'cause I don't have enough post for the development sections. Tried to root my 4gLTE using RegawMOD EVO 4G LTE Rooter, but if failed because I had a new LTE and Best Buy upgraded me to OTA 1.22.651.3. Although the root failed, TWRP recovery was flashed, and I read that all I have do do is use it to flash SuperSU.zip and I'm done. I copied SuperSU.zip to the root of my SD card, boot into recovery, but I don't see ANY files, just folders.
When I boot into normal system operations and use any file manager - Astro, ES, etc - I still only see folders but no files (folders show as empty). Yet my gallery is full of the pics that are on my SD card, and when I mount the phone as a drive on my PC I see all of the files.
I tried copying all files to my PC, formating my SD card on the phone, and copying back but still no files. Could be my SD card (32GB Patriot) and this phone. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
You will need to mount it in TWRP. It will show your sd card as empty until then. On the new 2.2.1, I think that it just gives you the option to switch between internal and external sd within the section to flash new zips.

Why am i not seeing update_su.zip when in recovery mode?

I am trying to root my Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 GT-I8160 using the following methods:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263003
http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-phones/how-to-root-the-samsung-galaxy-ace-2-50010296/
but i'm stuck at recovery mode. When i select "apply update from sdcard", i dont see the update_su.zip file that i placed in the SD memory. I can see the file when i remove the SD card and plug it in my computer and also in "my files" in the phone....but not when i am on recovery mode. I even tried unzipping the files and zipping them back using win-zip thinking that maybe it is somehow not reading winrar but nothing changed.
Someone plz help! This is getting really frustrating!
Thanks for all the views guys but i figured it out.
The instructions all say to put the file in the sd memory. Well, that was the problem. Once you are in recovery mode and you go to update from sd memory, you will already be in sd memory. Soooo just put the update zip file in the phone memory and you will see it
Cheerio!
