[Q] Android pictures on HTC Sense pic tab.... - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a problem.... i loaded Android and it is good, a couple of cons but all great but on return to windows mobile i found that my pictures on the pic tab had 99 photos... All i could see was android pictures etc. these pictures were not photos that i tould but the thumbnails from android. On my sd card i have a DCIM folder and in there i have my windows mobile pictures that i have taken. Also in the there is a folder called .thumbnails
I new this must come from android beacuse in the root of the sd card is a . files...
Anyway, i moved this thumbnail folder to the root of sd and started android. everything was as it is... i turn off then on, loading windows.... and check photos tab... still there...look in file explorer... it created it self a new one.
The problem i have is that it clogs it up and slows it down while i am scrolling through for a picture.
IS there any way to fix it?
HD2
Android 2.2 (if needed)
Cookies home tab editor (again if needed)
IF THERE IS ANY THING ELSE TELL ME....
Is this in the right forum?

SECOND PRIORITY
i just want to know of there is a gallery 3D for Windows mobile
If is it would be great. If not... there's an idea

hi, i encountered the same issue, still figuring how to fix it too...
now all in the picture tab on hd2 wm sense, are the thumbnail pics from the android.
initially, i thought the sdcard was corrupt, but i found the .thumbnail folder in the dcim folder on the sdcard... and all the photos are still intact.
anyone can help?

Using HTC Album, browse to the folder you wish to see as your default and then from the Menu within HTC Album, set it to be default view in Sense(not sure of exact wording or menu order but I know this is possible as I've done it.

thanks for the reply, base on your reply, i managed to search for another solution,
http://www.jayceooi.com/2010/02/08/how-to-hide-folders-with-pictures-from-htc-album/
the above link shows how to hide folders within the dcim folder from htc ablum
both which i had not try, will try both later when i'm back in winmo.
hope either one solves the issue.

well using what you have told me i have found the steps you are talking about...
you go to htc sense picture tab and press album. from there you press albums on the left.
it then comes up with a list of pictures folders etc, choose the folder you want (if you had it like me it would be 100media . then click on it.... choose menu a click use this album as favourite...etc.
there you go no android pics clotting up your htc

if you go through the "leo tips and tweaks" thread it will give you the reg entrys to ignore certain folders from the htc album......
i usually just delete that folder once a week to stop it building up and up...

Replace the stock Gallery?

I hated when Android made the move to the 3d gallery. Anyone know where I can get the old version, and if replacing the current gallery will work with it?
I'm hunting down old roms and backups on my external hd now.... curious if others have replaced the 3d gallery.
Please give input!
I found this from CM 5.0.7... which I think is not the 3d gallery. Will wait till I hear from others before I go replacing..... I'm thinking if I use root explorer and move the stock gallery to my sd (for a backup) and drop this is system/app I should be good to go after a reboot... thoughts?
EDIT: SUCCESSFULLY REPLACED THE CALENDAR (IN MY STICKY THREAD), BUT NO DICE WITH THE GALLERY... NO .ODEX FILE I GUESS? WAS NOT SHOWING IN THE APP LIST. SORRY FOR THE CAPS, JUST DIDNT WANT PEOPLE GOING CRAZY WITH THE ATTACHED FILE.
i say do it
i been replacing everything in my vibrant*de-t-mobiled*
just dont delete the file you replace so if it doesnt work just move it back into system/apps folder you wont know till you try hell i bricked my phone once now know how to not do what i had done last time.
please wait 2 seconds for an uncompressed image, or press Ctrl+F5 for original quality page
I guess this would work if I flashed a deodexed stock rom.... anyone know how to swing this stock?
I cant let this die... suggestions?
Correct me if Im wrong but couldnt you just download a G1 rom running 2.1 or 2.2. Most of these roms have BOTH the old Gallery and the new Gallery installed.
This is how I would go about doing it as I like the Picasa functionality of the new gallery. It would just seem better to have both giving you a choice of better image quality on zoom in the old gallery and Picasa integration in the new gallery.
Should just be able to decompile the APK for the old gallery and rename it to Gallery2d or what not, change the icon and you're set.
APKTool

You should be able to look at how this was done in Chromatic

Im really not big on the 3D gallery either, and thats mainly because 1) i had a mytouch and a mt3gs so it wasnt the smoothest... 2) i have certain directories thats are "private" and its not cool having them popup with mutliple pics.. haha
But on the Vibrant there was so much good to the phone that it outwieghed the gallery thing. Id like a 2D gallery, but I like the Picasa integration too and also wonder how the Camera would get involved with a 2D gallery.

This is a simple fix. Because you are using android you can hide folders in the same way that you do on any Linux system. Simply open your file manager, Astro should work well for this, find the folder of shameful pics, choose to rename it and simply add a period "." to the beginning of the folder name. So if the folder was called shameful-pics the new folder name would be .shameful-pics.
Now that your folder is hidden, the gallery should not pick it up. If you want to view the images simply open Astro back up and brows to that folder and use the Astro photo viewer to see the pics.

pictures not showing up in sense album

I've started moving over to QuickPic but if i use this program to edit, move or copy to another file (i.e. DCIM) then sense album just won't see it. Not really a big problem until i want to send it as a MMS because messages uses sense album to choose the image.
Even if i restart the phone or even delete the cache, sometimes the images just never show up.
The pictures are there, nothing wrong with the images, my file manager sees them no problem.
Another thing, HTC album widget doesn't see the changes if I use Quickpic to make any chages, i.e. cropping.
Is it just me? Any help?
cheers, john.

Same here. I just use quickpic all the time.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App
Im not too sure but i think it has something to do with the phones built in "HTC Storage" and your external sd card. I think the phone is looking at one of the storages and not the other. What i did was completely ditch my 32gb sd card since i dont even use it much and use the phones internal 16gb storage instead. But with all the partitions or whatever i get like only 10gigs back

[Q] .thumbnails is huge, its growing and coming back every time

hello dear members,
i tryed to get rid of the .thumbnails folder (found on internal Storage - DCIM) because its that huge (3 GB) and every time i deleate it it slows down my Phone, the ZU gets really hot and that for about 10 minutes and after that the folder is back again containing all my Photos in a smaller version + an huge file that is as big as all the original Photos on my SD-Card. I would be very happy, if the folder would be history.
Does anyone has this Problem too and would help me, please? Thanks .

If you use the Album app this will happen. The .thumbnails folder has reduced size images of every .gif, .jpg, .mp4, etc type media file on your phone. Not 100% sure if this works but if you create a file " .nomedia " in directories you don't want to show up it will not cache them. Delete the .thumbnails and reboot, bring up Album (I use QikPic instead) and it will re-cache them.
If you have a rooted phone I believe you can use Titanium Backup to disable the Album process. That will keep it from creating the cache but it will also mean Album won't work.
By the way, I have had an instance where the process was running continually and would never complete. The reason turned out to be a corrupted file. I had to go through thousands of pictures to find the one causing the issues. If you see a file that doesn't have a thumbnail that's a likely candidate.
Marc
By removing this folder, your gallery would have black squares and with no chance at getting any ideas about what was what. You can delete the folder, but it'll come right back again once you open your gallery. It's not possible to permanently remove it. The problem here is that you have way too many photos on your Ultra.
I have 279 thumbnails which uses 86MB. You must have thousands of photos, so there's nothing wrong with that folder, it's the amount of stuff you have in your gallery that is the problem. Time to clean it!

Yes, that's the media_scanner running wild. But no wonder it takes several minutes to scan when he has thousands of photos on his phone. Move them to your Dropbox instead and use that as a gallery when you want to look at them. No caching or thumbs.
ok, i`ve got a solution i think (works for 30 mins right now):
deactivate the Album App under apps
deleate the .thumbnails folder
create a new file whith ES Explorer named .thumbnails
reboot (dunno if necessary)
activate Album again
reboot
open Album, wait 10 minutes
check if the folder is still there, if not its a sucess - (till now...)

[Q] Where does stock HTC Gallery store database?

Somehow, my gallery is showing the same pictures twice. Not all, but many. If you long press, and click details, the picture name and location for the two are identical. I've verify that only one copy is on the SD card. I've tried clearing data for the gallery (via the app menu in settings); I also tried deleting /data/data/com.htc.album (which had some database files, oh, I should note I have root) as well as deleting all .thumbnail directories. I figure there must be somewhere that I'm not looking.

How about first backup all your pictures to your PC so you're sure to have them, disconnect from PC, then try delete ALL of them through Gallery.
Maybe there's a backup on your ext_sd and that's why?
Here's something web-wise that might apply (google):

I saw that, but I'm not on JB, and the path given in details for each image is identical. I do have a backup, I'll see what happens when I delete one of the two. As you can see, I've got several thousand pictures, so I'd rather not fix this one at a time, esp since I'm going to be flashing a new ROM soon. I just want to try to figure this out. There has to be a way to reset the gallery and get it to rescan my SD card fresh.

In Gallery Album view then settings, I find option "Select Album" allowing me to tag each and every album to delete all at once.
However my gallery in ICS CM10 may be different than yours.
If your images are synced to the web is there a chance that they show up as the second images?

Yeah, it's the stock HTC Gallery. The only option in settings are "Perfect Pics" options. There is no way to delete full albums through the gallery. They are not synced to the web. The details dialog for the images show the exact same details down to the path, filename, everything, for duplicate images.
I deleted one of the pictures, and just deleting one, made both disappear from the gallery. Copying back that single file, there is only one shown. So, looks like it is definitely a goof up in the gallery database. Now to just figure out where it is on the filesystem.

Up top on the left, see if you can switch that view to Album. Then check the settings about Selecting Albums.
Yours looks different from mine--mine has a text drop-down menu where you have an icon of an album.
And I was using the on-screen buttons--Home, Menu, Return, Search, when I said to use the Settings, it was the Menu button on the bottom of my phone.

Can you do it through HTC Sync, or perhaps an after-market file utility--alas the File Manager that comes with CM10 allows me to wildcard search "*.jpg" and shows them all in a list, however at that point didn't allow me to select them all at once to delete all at once, just individually.
However, my images are stored in DCIM/Camera/ and I have those folders on both my int and ext sd.
Your camera settings may give you the option of where to store photos--possibly there's a "both" option, idunno.
The free app Quick Pic that I use gives me the option to select all my photos or albums at once and to delete them at once.
Maybe that is the easiest solution.
I really appreciate you trying to help, but I'm almost sure the issue is the database the gallery creates. I've been using ES File Explorer to try to find this database and delete it, to force the gallery to re-parse the entire filesystem. I'm positive that the database has duplicate entries for the same file. Deleting and restoring pictures external to the gallery app has no effect. Deleting the pic from the gallery causes the gallery to remove both entries in it's database, and when I add the picture back, I get only one, as I should (which effectively cleans the db for that one particular file). This database has to exist somewhere, it's just a matter of finding and deleting it.
I submitted a question to HTC support. We'll see what they say.
Maybe it's not your device.
Maybe it's just syncing to a cloud storage.
I know that my brother's girlfriend's Motorola Xoom was sending pictures directly to her Google+ account and she didn't like that. It took me a while to figure out that's what it was because we'd delete all the pictures and still they'd show up.
Maybe that's what's happening to you.

The stock gallery isn't that smart. On the main screen, you can select to show pictures from local storage, Picassa, Flickr, etc. But these show the same path for each duplicate "/mnt/sdcard/ext_sd/DCIM/100MEDIA".
Why not just try "Quickpic"? Better than stock IMO.

I could use a different gallery, but just as an exercise, want to figure this out, since it has to be solvable. I'm going to flash a new ROM soon, so it really doesn't matter, I just want to solve this, since it seems like an easy problem (figure out where the gallery db is and delete it).

Possible it doesn't keep a database, just scans each time, and is listing the same photo under two headings even though same path?

It may not be a database proper, like a SQLite database, but there is definitely some sort of cache that it builds. If I add a huge directory of pictures, open the gallery, it takes a while to parse through it all. Subsequent times opening the gallery, the pictures/thumbnails are available instantly.

Thumbs are built and kept in a folder under DICM. there is most likely a process that scans the folders for pics and then makes a thumb if it doesn't already have one.
Thus there are actually two copies of pictures on your phone. One is full sized and the other is a thumb size.
You can copy all the pics off your phone to one folder on your computer, then delete all the photos from your phone and then copy them back from your computer.
If you have thousands of pics, I'd back them up anyway. dont want to lose some great pics...

Yeah, I've tried deleting the .thumbnail folder to try to get the gallery to rescan. Say I have 1000 pics, and I add a folder of pictures with a 1000 more, the first time I open the gallery, it shows 1000, with a spinning wheel. Eventually, it'll populate with 2000 pictures. And you can tell it's creating thumbnails. If I just delete the thumbnail folder, when I open the gallery, it immediately shows 2000 pictures, but it'll slowly recreate thumbnails. That's why I think there has to be some other cache somewhere, and in my case it has duplicates in it.
As for backup, I have a Synology NAS (with 1TB RAID1 mirror) that all of my pictures are backed up to, and I use the Synology DS Photo+ app to instantly backup pictures as I take them to my NAS. Once a month, my NAS is mirrored to a 1TB USB drive.

I can't move out pictures from secure folder anymore

Hello,
four days ago, the gallery in secure folder removed the option to move the pictures out to the normal gallery.
Do you have the same problem?
Where can I report the problem to Samsung?
Yep same. It just happened to me today and I am unable to get them out... Not sure wth happened but that option is gone!?!
Same thing happened to me. I figured it out.
They updated so you cant move pictures from the gallary app, on the secure folder menu u have to chose my files then images and the hold the picture u want to move out and press move out of folder.
Well that's a bunch of pull.... moving it.... just another step to do
