How can I save app data through updating ROMs? - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to have all my apps data ( like game saves, login info etc) saved when I flash a ROM update. It's a huge pain to manually re-setup EVERYTHING. Apps and contacts come back which is awesome but all the apps and settings are all back to square one..

I'm sure you could use root explorer to save the configuration files for these apps and reload them later with root explorer as well... but... you might create glitches or issues with the new rom... (aka it will end up being slow or have FC s)

Titanium Backup will save all of your app data and settings...once your apps are backed up, flash a new rom, download titanium from the market and use it to restore all of your apps with their data

Just so u know there is a FREE version of titanium backup on the Android market...
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App

You don't have to pay for titanium backup (though in my opinion you should support Android developers). The free version does it too (unless something has changed since I last used the free version). You just can't do it in a batch which is much easier.

Saw this thread and downloaded the free version of titanium backup to try it out before buying the pro version. but when i try to backup my apps and user data with a scheduled backup, it fc's before finishing the backup. Will this happen with the pro version as well? or is there any way to fix it?

I've never had issues backing up or restoring apps with Titanium free or paid version. Are you using other apps while it's creating the backup? Personally, I don't do scheduled backups. I only backup just before flashing a new rom so that I know everything is current.

well with the free version you cant do a batch backup, so i ran a scheduled backup from the schedule screen. i reinstalled the app, and it seemed to run fine. thanks for the response though, much appreciated.

Yes you can. You can do batch back ups and batch restores. The only differences I've noticed between the free and paid versions are:
Free - Only schedule one back up at a time. When running a batch restore, it stops on every app and you must approve to restore them. Special services disabled
Paid - Schedule unlimited backups. Restoring a batch does not require approving each app. Special features, such as Market Doctor, are enabled.
Sent from my Floyo Tazz using XDA App

^ Bro - If you have to click on every app to restore, one by one... that isn't really "batch" mode, by definition
Get the paid version, well worth it, and nice to support the dev of such a well made and valuable app.
I wouldnt be caught flashing/changing roms without it !
For ppl that have trouble with Titanium Backup, try My Backup Pro. It sometimes works when TTB will not.

It's still a batch restore selection. And it restores app data as well. Only it prompts you on every app and asks if you'd like to install it.But yes, I agree, the paid version is a must.

on the pro version there is a new feature to backup apps to a flashable zip file, which should make the whole restore process super fast. You can just flash a new rom then flash your apps with data back and not have to do manual restoring.
I haven't tried it yet though.

For just restoring Apps and the data when switching between roms, I recommend.....no, HIGHLY recommend Titanium Backup. Not only does this app backup apps and the data of the apps, it also backups the market cache, so on the market, the app would list as being installed. It's incredibly useful. It also allows you to uninstall system apps by the way.
I know that and that's not what I'm getting at, I don't want to get titainium backup pro and the regular titainium backup takes forever to restore because u have to hit install for every app and its very tidious sooooo, I came to the conclusion since its in my backup files why can't I just restore it from there because its just one click and no hassle... but I want to know if that works.
P.S. I have titainium... and mybackup root too...

It is tedious, but in my case worth it. I have not used MyBackup Root in app backups, but you can try.

It may have apps that are specific to the previous ROM. I've done it and it can work but if its a differnt ROM it can cause problems. try it and see.
Personally I'd save up the 6 bucks and buy Tibkup if you are going to flash ROMS Titanium Backup is going to be one (if not the one) most used application you will use. If you can't part with the 6 bucks get MyBackup Root I don't think it prompts you for restores but I could be wrong (I haven't' used it since I bought TB)

did i miss something? Batch Restore your app people....in the full licensed version, pay the money...it deserves it...phenominal app....only must have app i have come across since I've owned my original Droid....worked even when I switched to the Inc, and copied the backup folder over...(Apps+Data only, obviously no system stuff)
is that what you're getting at on post#3...pay the money and forget about worrying...I always wipe everything between roms, even updates to the one i'm running...then TiBU after flashing new rom...takes a couple minutes and I'm back up and running...even with Go Launcher, homescreens are backed up minus widgets
This post has nothing to do with TiBU at all, and its not the purpose, I just want to know if I can take the data from a backup and install it with my new rom?

Which would be to BUY titanium Backup Pro or MyBackup Root
Other than that you can take a chance and restore /data or if your on 2.2 or higher let Google restore all your apps from the cloud but a lot of ROMs don't seem to auto restore.

What's the best way to back up apps?

I've been using titanium backup when I flash a new rom. I usually do a full data wipe then, once the new rom is installed, i restore all of my apps and data.
The problem I'm having with titanium backup is that I have to individually install each app which is extremely time consuming.
Does anyone know of a more efficient method of backing up my apps?
BTW, I know you can make a .zip file using titanium but I wasn't able to flash it.

I just spent a couple bucks for the Pro key, which allows for batch restoring/backups. Completely worth it when you're wiping and flashing on a daily basis.
I agree. I bought the Pro key. I think buying it through the Amazon App store will bypass any currency conversion issues, possibly. (It seems like when I bought Titanium Backup Pro, I got charged an extra dollar because of the currency conversion....I don't think I had that problem with another app in a non-local currency via Amazon.)
I am seconding what he said. The Pro key is well worth the couple of bucks or whatever it costs. You just hit the restore and let it do it's thing. No prompts.
At $5.99, this will be one of the most expensive apps I have purchased but I'll give it a try if you guys say it's worth it.

It was the second app (of two) I ever purchased (the other being The Sims for $1), and it was totally worth it. Titanium Backup is simply a great program. The batch functionality alone is worth the price- Dropbox integration is a very nice perk (along with a few other Pro features).
I astro for back ups
I bought the Pro version of Titanium Backup after my first slow and tedious backup without the batch function. Plus the automatic backups are great.
i use my backup pro
Gonna have to invest in this as well. Thanks.
Alrighty. Just purchased and backing up as I type. I'll let you guys know.
Why doesn't google market keep track of the free apps we download?
That way when we first sync with google again it would at least get all our apps installed again.

Pro key was my first purchase from the market. I don't regret it in the slightest. I always do a batch backup before flashing a rom and then batch restore after. I consider it essential if you are rooted.

It does, actually, in stock Froyo and above, but for some reason the ROMs we have on the Fascinate right now don't.
Normally, when you activate your Google account on a newly flashed phone, all your apps, paid and free, will automatically download as part of your first sync. It doesn't prompt you and it's totally automatic.
I do prefer using TB, though, as Google doesn't backup app data and it can take a really long time to download every app if you have a lot of them. Also, Google's sync occasionally misses apps or downloads ones that you had uninstalled.

I wonder if I have always done something wrong then, I may be new to the fascinate rom scene but I flashed multiple roms on my og droid and they never seemed to give me more than the paid apps
in the market.
admittedly these were aosp roms not stock verizon roms maybe that had something to do with it?
I have the paid version off TB as well but when flashing from say a TW rom to an AOSP rom I prefer to download the apps from the market everything seems to run smother when I do it this way.

Agreed...titanium b/u is worth every penny...on a side note, for me going into settings-> applications-> manage applications-> running applications and going to market (or in my case since I'm on ukb...its tsm market) and hitting clear data...then when I go to the market and hit my apps it will show all of my apps both free and purchased, assuming I don't have any of them frozen because frozen apps won't get recognized by the market...it doesn't start downloading on its own but at least I have a list of complete app download history should I need an update.

From my understanding, apps can be backed up and restored with no issues. They are just apps you will be downloading again from the Play Store anyway. Your system apps though, dont try. Use titanium backup to backup your USER apps and their data and thats it. No system data or system apps or anything else. When you get CM9 installed, they should restore with no problem.

I'm on cm9 now. I don't remember if I restored from TiBu after switching or not. But the worst that will happen is it will give you and error or it will install but not open. But I really don't think you will have problems. Just don't mess with the system settings and system apps.
If you're worried about losing something, just do a nandroid backup of your ROM before doing anything. Then if something goes wrong, restore the nandroid.
I haven't had a single error restoring apps in cm9 using TiBu. I never restore system stuff anyway but I can see where it would cause problems with the different framework.
Is everyone on CM9 for the X2 liking it so far? I was CM9 for the X but my X crapped out on me and Verizon is sending me a X2 as replacement. I understand the cam corder still isn't working but has anyone tried using LG Camera for the cam corder? It worked for me on the X with CM9.

Cant backup apps + data

Im currently on hyperdrive 7 and was looking to flash a different rom to try out, but neither rom toolbox pro or tibu will allow me to backup apps and data. I usually use rom toolbox pro, but when I try to backup app+data, it just starts failing every app. I tried tibu again just to see if the problem was rtp, but it will only restore the app without data. Most stuff I dont mind losing data on, but I have a few games and other things I dont want to start from scratch on. Thanks in advance for any help!

That's not recommended using a nandriod backup to replace your data partition when switching to a different ROM. What you can do is use Titanium Backup to backup all your user apps with data, and then restore them after you've flashed a new ROM.
FYI, only backup and restore "User" apps with Titanium when switching ROM's.
+1 to what guyd said. I paid for the titanium backup app years ago and I use it every day. Don't really know what the free version doesn't have compared to the paid. I never restore system data though. Makes flashing roms and setting them up sooo much quicker.
