[Q] Problem setting mp3 as ring/notification/alarm tone. - Optimus One, P500, V General

Did someone able to set an mp3 as ringtone or notificationtone, or alarmtone using programs like "Rings Extended", "Tone Picker" or "HandcentSMS" that allow to browse and then select an mp3 stored anywhere in the SD?
On my O1 no one of that programs works: e.g. if I set the mp3 from Settings->Sound->Phone ringtone throgh that programs, when I call the phone it rings with a default android ringtone and not the mp3 selected.
The only 'working' method for me is to put the mp3 into
/sdcard/media/audio/alarms - for the alarms,
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications - for the notifications (sms too),
/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones - for the rings,
and then select it through the standard Andori interface (Android system, that in my O1 shows me only the files stored in the folders just listed).
Could that these programs are incompatible with the O1???
In the HTC Desire with Froyo of my colleague they work perfectly.
Did you have the same problem or it is a problem of my O1 only?
Many thanks for the help...I'm going crazy!

Works like a charm for me. And i just placed mp3s in a /media folder on sdcard.

What works fine for you? Are you use an app like "Rings Extended"? Or are you set the ringtone from Settings->Sound->Phone with the standard Android interface? Or are you set the mp3 as ringtone from the music player?

I used "Ringtones" app and this works. But it seems that copy some melody into /sdcard/media/audio/notifications should be works too.

There are more than one app called "Ringtones", please could you link the one you use?

OK, maybe I am not clear in my explanation...what does not work for me are the various mp3 apps ("Rings Extended", "Tone Picker" or " HandcentSMS) that allows you to select an mp3 in the various settings that ask to choose a sound file .
If I go to Settings->Sound->Phone ringtone with the standard interface of Android I can see only the mp3 stored in the specific folders under /sdcard/media/audio; with the app installed, I can select any mp3s stored anywhere in SD, but even if I select the mp3 then it always plays a default tone.
Yes, this is solved using the music player or even Astro, but the fact is that I would use an app like EasyProfiles to create and manage phone profiles so as to change the ringtone when certain profiles are selected. EasyProfile (like any other apps like that) calls the same interface to select the tone as when I go to Settings->Sound->Phone ringtone ... with the same results (default ringtone is played instead the mp3 selected).
Has anyone installed one of these apps to select the mp3 and/or could do this simple test? (in the Desire with Froyo of my colleague the apps work properly).
I have just made a SW reset and the problem persists ....

I have not problem with it.
For firstime I download Ringtones app and tried download some sounds via this app - it works fine, but there are only some songs and I like anothers
Now, when I read that it is possible just copy media files into right folder I tried it and it also works fine. Ringtone can be selected and when I tried to call myself and everething was fine.
There is two possibilites, why it doesn work:
1) You have your phone conected in USB in USB Mass Storage mode - in this case mobile phone can not acess into memory card, so file can not be used for playing.
2) You call from number, which have selected their own ringtone.
Also I noticed this:
When you are connected in Mass Storage mode and somebady call you, ringtone is reset. In this case copy ringtone into memory can help, but in phone isn't many space for this kind of waste of space.

The link does not work, but anyway from your description I understood that your application download and set the tone so, to set the tone you have to open the application. This is not what i need to do: I know that if you use the music player or other app like Astro and now Ringtones all it works, but as said I need to use application like "Rings Extended", "Tone Picker" or " HandcentSMS" the provide only an interface to the other apps or Android system settings to select mp3 stored anywhere in the SD.
So, to be clear, the only test that can clarify me the problem is the following:
1. install Rings Extended.
2. go to Settings->Sound->Phone ringtone, select 'Rings Extended', then select 'Select musuc (Rings)' and then select an mp3 that IS NOT stored in the folders (and subfolders) /sdcard/media/audio/.
3. now call the phone (or go to Settings->Sound->Volume and change Ringtone volume to have a preview of the tone) and check if the tone played is the mp3 selected or a standard gingle.
I repeat, this operation works in other smartphone like Desire and Magic, but not in (my?) O1.
If someone could do this simple test I will so happy

It seems that here was some communication noise Yes I can confirm this issue for you. Simples way will be contact developers of this app and let him know, that it not works. For now I haven't idea how to make this app works properly.

Many many thanks!
I do not know if it is "correct" to contact the developer of the app reporting a bug...this app and all the others app that do the same thing seem work well in all the other devices only in the O1 do not work :-( .
I will try in anycase...hoping he has a O1 where test his app.

mp3 ring tone

Now you can use your mp3 as ring tonr just install the cab file in your xda and from the explorer long press in the mp3 tone and choose it as ringtone i hope you like it.
.
where's the file broad??
,
it's okay now..sorry
not working
it is not working, after install the file, i still cannot select the mp3 as rington in settings, even put in the ring folder still not shown in phone rings
tried it too but it didn't work... maybe OS thing?
No, it works only on Windows Media 10. If you Upgrade to 2.20 CHS Rom you'll have it!
Thanks eFiend
it works for me; doesn't use / need wmp10. what you do is go to file explorer, if the mp3 file you want is in the storage card then go there. once you see the file; put your stylus on it for like 2-3 seconds. a small menu should appear; the last option in the menu says "set as ringtone" or something like that. if you click on this option; wait for like 3-5 seconds as the app copies the mp3 file and puts it on the rings folder in windows. from there; if you go to phone settings you'll see that the mp3 file you wanted is now the ringtone for the phone.
the only disadvantage i see is that if you have a nice mp3 file that's more than 3mb in size; then that's the same file which will appear in your rings folder. this could eat up some memory. and since you'll eventually answer the phone (and not wait for the whole song to finish) then you may want to consider converting the bitrate of the mp3 file to be lower. i use fernanda porto's tudo de bom (from chill brazil...awesome!) and it's 4.5mb in size...the same size is in my rings folder...
ITS DOESNT WORK...!
I HAVE INSTALLED THE FILE CAB IN MY DEVICE BUT I GOT NOTHING MENU FOR SET MP3 RING TONE IN PROGRAMS MENU...
CAN ANY BODY HELP ME ...?

also I have a ROM version 2.06.00WWE, ExtROM Sin.Merged.v.1.0
Been waiting for this...!!!
Neat and Cool....
Else all my ringtones are wave files.. it is eating a huge chunk of space...
Thanks for sharing!
Tried that - still don't work..
Hi there,
I tried holding the stylus on the mp3 file, but it does not give "set as ringtone" menu. On a WAV file, however, it does.
Does this program require WM2003SE?
mp3 as ringtone
Hi!
I managed to install the cab and also choose an mp3 song as tone, in the context menu there is "set as ringtone", however, it didn't trigger the mp3 song that i picked, does this happen to you?

I realised it doesn't work !
coz i forgotten to remove the wave file... now i re-set the mp3 as ringtone upon holding the stylus for 2-3 seconds... i called my number.. it defaulted to bass(comes with set).Tried other mp3... still the same..
Hi Maxtro.. Nice to see you're on same country / network as me! too bad the app doesn't work. :?
hmmmm, that's strange. maybe it depends on the rom versions? anyway; i'm sending you some screen shots just to show you how it goes. just follow screens1-5..as you can see the last option allows you to use the mp3 file as a ringtone...
Not working mate ... set as ring tone menu is available but don't change anything ... mp3 file is not being copied to windows/rings/ folder ... and not shown @ the ring tones set up ...
yeah man, nice prog !!!!it works on my xda2

Using my own music as ringtone

Hi Guys,
I just had my HTC Hero for a couple of days before. It is the first android phone i ever had!! I am enjoying using it so far.
I have read of rooting HTC Hero, which i am not very clever at. Also i am a bit skeptic if i will be able to download updates for htc.com after rooting my Hero. So i want to know if it is possible to copy my own music files to htc hero audio so that i can use it as my ringtone?
Any helps appreciated thanks!!
PS! I use Lindas file manager in my Hero
You can put your sounds on your sdcard - /media/notifications for notification sounds, /media/ui for ui sounds, /media/ringtones for ringtones and /media/alarms for alarms (or just /ringtones, /alarms, /ui and /notifications - I've never tried this). The hero will definitely use mp3 and ogg formats. I think wav will also work. Once you have your sounds in place you will need to reboot for the Hero to pick up the new sound selections. mp3 and ogg formats with ID3 tags will allow the Hero to use those for the list information (namely, it will allow the Hero to list the track title in your selection choices). The only problem is that if you remove the sdcard or have it mounted to your PC, the sdcard will not be accessible to your Hero so incoming calls/notification events/etc during this time will not be able to use your programmed sounds. For permanently available sounds, you would need to copy the sounds to your Hero - in /system/media/audio/notifications, etc.
You can just put it on SD card and run the music player. Pick the song you want and press the menu button and you can choose it as a ringtone. It will even let you trim it.

Music file associations

Can some one kindly explain tome how to get my music file
associations back to standard please.
After downloading Coreplayer I noticed all my music files
had converted to Coreplayer association with the corresponding
CP icons in my file explorer,I would like to change this back.
Cheers for any help you can offer....
Open up core player, hit the menu or options button and you can get to tools then pages and you can find file associations just uncheck mp3, not the best description because i dont use it any more sorry, but its something like that

Cheers bud,I've done that, unchecked a few things and it seems the
WMA files I've got have reverted back OK to
Windows Media Player and have the right icon, but all my MP3's have the
Windows icon you usually get with programs and aren't selectable to play
from File explorer,if I select a track it just drops back to the home screen.
Music tracks are still selectable from HTC Player....
I'm at a brick wall at the moment, don't know what to try next ?
have you tried a soft reset?? and all so tried opening a track through windows media player that way it might pick them up
Yep tried that and updating my WM library, everything plays OK
but I still have this strange icon issue in File Explorer and
of course I can't select them to play from within there...
Seems like I will have to delete all the music and re-load them again,
all my ringtones and notification tones have stopped working.
Strange that they will all still play in hTC music player, but
are not selectable via File Explorer.
I would have liked a definitive answer to how to cure this, but
hey ho something to do on a rainy Sunday removing all my music files.
I ditched Coreplayer, not only did it cause this issue by associating all my
MP3's to itself,I found it quite irritating to use.
Well...deleted everything and uploaded all music files from my laptop again,
still no joy,I really need some more advice...
All my music files are still showing as Windows files with no music association...
please someone help !!
I can't get any of my music files to select as a ringtone,I missed several calls, texts and emails...
for the ringtone try dropping it into device-app data-sounds, i have no music on my phone, but i put ringtones there cause ms instructed me to do so, only problem is ringtone showed up in player and is ur music in ms format - wma i believe - i do not use i got 1.5 gb songs ipod format hope it helps
i decided to try and answer here instead of hd2 place
I have replied to your issue in another forum. Try using Resco File Explorer or Total Commander to set the file association back to wmplayer.exe.
Thanx Web,
but the issue isnt where the files are stored, they do already show up in my
selection of available ringtones and notification sounds (I had already been using them,so they are correctly placed in the phones folders.
The problem is if I click on one to hear it before deciding to select it for
shall we say my main ringtone nothing happens due to it
not having the correct file type....
I have selected 'Opens with' as WMP and they will open up from File Explorer
and play perfectly OK
and also in HTC player, but the file type is showing as 'unknown type'
instead of the generic HTC music icon it should have....
Hope that makes it clearer ?
OK I tried your suggestion Web and ringtones work now... thank fook for that cheers...
although they appear as more than one copy of each in the
selection folder now, this isnt a problem as I know to select the top
version of each to my alotted ring tones and can just delete the
other copies from where I have them stored.
So everything plays as it should now,it's just the icons that
are wrong.
thanks markt77 - appreciate the input - i try - and i am learning good knowledge from u and the other folks over there - boy it is sometimes really hard to get a response at xda when u request answers

[A]How to hide Ringtones/Notifications from Music Player, Remain visible to system

I have scanned various threads regarding this topic and we all know how even if you place your ringtones/notifications in a different folder than your music files they still show up in Music Player
We also know about the 2 workarounds: Use a different music player that lets you pick which directories your music is stored (best solution so far) or put an empty file named .nomedia where your ringtones are. That is not a good choice since it hides the ringtones from media scanner and therefore will not be selectable as a ringtone or notification unless you use a third party app.
Workaround #3: (my preference)
I followed the instructions from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7375013
1) - On your sdcard, create a folder called "media", then create another folder in that called "audio".
2) - Inside the "audio" folder, create 3 seperate folders called "Alarms", "Notifications" and "Ringtones".
3) Convert your ringtones and notifications from MP3 to WAV. Yes they will be slightly larger, I converted PLAINRING.MP3 > WAV and it went from 74kb to 613kb. Not a big deal.
4) Copy the WAV files to the correct directories you just created and you've got tones! They will be hidden from Music Player but they will show up with all your other ringtones and notifications.
No need for root or any third party apps...unless you want to convert MP3 to WAV on your phone instead of a PC
Thanks for sharing...
Sent from my XDA app cuz I'm stalking your mom....
Create a blank text file on your pc and name it .nomedia (don't let it save the .txt extension) and place it in the directory you want to hide media from the player.

Thank you very much!!! Best solution so far!
I tried the "ringtones" folder, tried the .nomedia file, and neither of those solutions really worked well.
Your idea did the trick perfectly!
Stock music players haven't been updated yet? So, we can choose just the directories we want.

I am not sure, they might have updated by now - you resurrected a 3+ month old thread. Since you did not add to the solutions and your only question is something not directly related to fixing the issue and could have been easily checked out on your own, I am not sure for your reason for resurrecting this thread. Now that it has been brought back how about you check out the stock app and report back?
I just make a playlist that does not include the ringtones.

Ringtones, notifications, alarms

I have a Nexus S running Android 2.3, but I don't understand why it is so difficult to place your ringtones, notifications, or alarm sounds so they are recognized in the sound settings. I have searched around and people are saying to put in media/audio/ringtones or alarms, etc, but it just doesn't work for me.
Where in the world are my ringtones and stuff suppose to go in? And is there a place where I can dump all those sounds in so I can use them as either ringtones, notifications, and alarms without having to make copies of them?
If this helps, you can put your sound files in any folder, use ringtone maker advanced from the market, then you can access all your sounds on your phone and then allocate your preferred sound for your requirement.
sent from my legend, currently using extream legend fuseā„¢
There's gotta be a way without having to download third party apps in order to get these custom sounds working. Why does google have to make it so unintuitive?
folders habe to look like this :
/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
/sdcard/media/audio/alarms
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications

I said that already =.=
And is there a way to place only one copy of my sounds so that it is shared among ringtones, alarms, and notifications?
No there has to be a copy in each folder if you want to use it as ringtone, Alarm, notification sound.
the thing is you need to reboot the phone.
ones Android boots up the media scanner starts, if it doesn't your files won't show up.
if you use cyanogen you have an app called spareparts (it's in the market too)
with that you can manually start the media scanner.
if that does not work, this could be the possible problems :
1. file is corrupt. does it play in the music app? which filetype is it? mp3 and ogg should work without problems
2. typo in the folders
3. media scanner is disabled, any system tweaks installed? autostarts, frozen apps, uninstalled system apps?
4. your system is different and the files need to be placed somewhere else
