Help with some things please! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I have rooted my phone (I think -_-) with the method where I download the file and rename it to update.zip, put it in the internal storage on my phone, and then recovered.
I have the superuser app icon, then I downloaded ROM manager and flashed a recovery (I don't even know wtf this means) and then downloaded Android Mate and tried going to the system files and deleting the bunch of crap bloatware this came with. I select the ones I want to delete, and then click delete, then it says "files were deleted successfully" but they're still there?! I'm so hella confused.
1.) Why will android mate not delete these files? I gave it permission through superuser!
2.) How do I know for sure if my phone is rooted?
3.) How do I know if I have a backup? I don't intend to flash any ROMS or operating systems or whatever the hell (i'm just fine with the stock OS)
I'm soooo lost right now. I love this phone but I reallllly wanna remove the bloatware so I can start customizing it.

Hello,
I have never used AndroidMate but I can recommend Titanium Backup. You can search for the app (even system apps, so make sure you know what you want to delete) and delete it. If you buy the premium version you can even "freeze" them, as in they won't be deleted but they won't start up either (in case you change your mind later on).
Hope this helps.

[Q] What the hell is going on with my phone (1.83 root issues)? * REWARD OFFERED

Ok.
My phone apparently hates me ... but I can't figure out where the hell I'm going wrong.
I had 1.57 on my phone, rooted. I did the OTA update to 1.83. Then I ran Gingerbreak. After rooting, I put Greyblur on my phone, so I thought I had root access since SystemRestore ran.
I now have root, theoretically ... but I can't see half the files that I used to be able to (when I mount /system as r/w I can't write to it ...). [edit]Also, I can't "adb shell mount" ... I can push/pull files from the /system directory, but I can't edit them directly either through RootExplorer or "adb shell; $su" etc.[/edit]
I can't see user data in my files; it looks like TitaniumBackup can, since it's creating backup files, but I don't trust that it's actually getting all my user data.
I want to redo my phone from scratch, but I'm worried I won't be able to actually save all my user data/databases/etc from programs ... things that say they save to the sdcard on this seem to save to /mnt/sdcard on the Atrix (not sdcard-ext)... which is actually the internal memory of the phone, not the removable sdcard (AFAICT).
Any chance anyone can help with this? Or do I have to just try to back up what I can, reflash to 1.26, root, "beforeupdate", update to 1.57, "after update", 1.83, gingerbreak, and hope for the best?
Any help is appreciated. Very valuable help will be rewarded with beer donations, etc.
Thanks in advance.

This question is being asked allot lately. You kind of answered it yourself in a literal way: As far as your phone is concerned, you are transferring the files to sd. Your not using the apps2extsd app (because it doesn't exist afaik). I know thats only one part of your question, hope you get the answers you need.

Right ... and the point of this is that if I remove my (physical) SD Card to preserve my files, it won't actually do anything because it's the INTERNAL memory that has my files/databases/etc.
Again, there's a bounty on solving this problem for me ... hopefully people look at this thread

I think you missed the point. Apps2sd is not to "preserve" anything, but for phones lacking enough memory to install the apps users want. We are lucky with the Atrix. We will probably never fill it up to the point we cant install anymore apps, but other phones have that problem. This is the purpose of apps2sd. If you want preservation use TiBU. Again I know this was only part of your question and wish you luck in finding the solutions you need.

Yeah, I have/use TiBU (PRO) ... what I am not sure of is:
1. If I flash the 1.26 sbf to my phone, will the TiBU backups get deleted from my internal memory? Or do I need to save them to my PC first (will probably do this anyway).
2. If I later reinstall from my TiBU backups, will all my saved games, program databases, etc, also be imported back onto the phone?
3. Are there other files that I need that I'd want to back up, but I won't be able to because I don't really have root?
4. How can I be certain that I actually have root access, and not some half-assed root access that Moto/ATT let me have while hiding full system access?
5. Why can I no longer mount my /system folder as r/w, along with not being able to see /system/data?
That's all, I think.
Thanks.
Best,

Back them up to your PC. SBF shouldn't clear your external/internal SD card, but most will wipe /data/ partition which contains all of the app settings and data.
They should be, yes.
Anything you can backup, you should. I'm not sure what you mean by you "don't really have root." Check for Superuser in your app drawer. If it's not there, install it. Gingerbreak/Gingerblur delete a LOT of stuff when you use them. I personally avoid them for this very reason.
There's no such thing as "half-assed root access." You either have it, or you don't. Make sure the su binary is in /system/bin and that you have Superuser.apk installed and listed in your app drawer.
What error messages is it giving you when you try?

1. I planned to
2. That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure.
3. I have Superuser, and TiBU and RootEx both think they have root.
4. See #3; however, I couldn't do some stuff I wanted to (like edit /system/etc/hosts. Also, i figured out why i couldn't find "/system/data/" ... because I'm an idiot and i should've been looking for /data/system/ !)
5. Well, now it's working. Very Strange. RootEx force closed on me, and when it reopened it's now working.
WTF man.

Sometimes TiBu and RootExplorer need to be restarted for root to take place. I'd say at this point (If you haven't already.), give your phone a reboot. That might smooth any other issues out.

Look for the service SBF for 1.83. There's two versions, one that wipes /data and one that doesn't. If you use the one that doesn't (I have SEVERAL times), you should be good to go.

Contacts Issue and Apps.zip

I have found a couple people that have frozen or removed apps and are starting to get issues with their contacts. Not being able to remove, add, update, or anything with them. So I am posting a zip file off all of the apps for people that have removed them without backing them up. You simply need to restore the app that you removed which is most likely a yahoo contacts or email that is tied into the contacts. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2VU48HSU
Great resource this. I was going to post mine up soon, but you beat me to it. Only had my X2 for a day.
Do you restore these with titanium backup? Because I backed up the bloat ware and later tried to restore it to no luck. However the apps were frozen when backed up so perhaps that caused an issue?
I don't think titanium backup is good at restoring. I've tried it a couple times with no luck. if you place a copy of the zip file extracted on your sd card and open it with files select the application you want to install you can install it from there. I personally only like titanium backup for freezing the application I don't use and cannot remove.

I have tried to install the apps in your list but some would not be installed. Is there another way I can force them to be installed? By putting them in a location?

Emergency Alerts
All Authenticators
Help Center

Just use root explorer and place them in system/data or push through adb.
Reboot after you place them there.

Sorry, I'm rather new to this whole root thing. I uninstalled backupassistant with Titanium backup and my contacts got screwed. I downloaded the zip and tried to install Backupassistant.apk but it says "application was not installed". Is there a specific way that I need to reinstall? Root explorer does not allow me to change permissions from read only for "system" so I can't move the apk files in there.

Check and see if you are rooted first. You cannot install system files as a normal app. They must be pushed to system/app or placed there using root explorer. Check and see if you are rooted or that you superuser has blocked root explorer.

Edit Below
I think I know what your talking about, follow Nitros instructions but when you are at the starting folder in Root Explorer press the Mount R/W button, I believe as long as you stay in the program (or don't press back too many times, because if you are at the base folder and press back it will go back to R/O) any folder you go into will say "R/W" at the top. So just press the button when its available and THEN go into the folder you need to go to and the setting will stick.
Edit: actually I just was messing with my phone and the reason I saw that behavior is because I was in the SD card where its always R/W. If its not showing up then yeah I'd listen to Nitro on this one, though I have no idea how you got rid of Backup assistant without root.
So I just copied the app list you posted onto my phone and now its in a boot loop. I thought that when I copied all of them over it would let me choose to not replace files already there. Now the phone is in a boot loop.
This may sound stupid, but I am kinda hoping its reinstalling the apks, one with each boot? But I kinda have a sneaking suspicious that I just ruined my phone since there is no SBF
Also, the boot times before restarting are not consistent, does this mean anything?

If you are in a bootloop but all of your apps are still in place there is a slight chance that you could do a factory reset through recovery and the phone will boot.

Yeah I am rooted with gingerbreak 1.2. As of now Im not really concerned with the contacts anymore because I can still add and save new contacts. My concern now is that when the OTA Gingerbread update is out for the X2, will I be able to install it without the original Bloat.

Yeah my office tech support guy took a look at it and tried it, we got an error indicator icon when we tried. I don't think it finished copying, I think everything dying killed the copy process and left something important unfinished.
Now I am a little wiser for my new phone.

So I'm guessing the only way to get these programs reinstalled is if the SBF is available for the X2, which it is not?

[Q] messed up big time, PLEASE HELP

To put it simply when I boot up my vibrant, it switches to the galaxy s GT-19000 screen then fully boots into what seems like a completely different phone. My contacts were still there until I factory reset, but none of my apps or anything. I also believe that my calls and messaging do not work. I just recently rooted my phone but where things went bad is when I tried installing voodoo lagfix. I tried adding the link where I got the dl for voodoo lagfix but because I am a new user I can not add links, but i got it from the project voodoo website and it was the second link in their dl section, the one for froyo installable with clockworkmod recovery and rom manager. When I try and go into recovery mode ClockwordMod Recovery v2.5.1.3 - Voodoo lagfix is what comes up and is completely different from what the recovery was before. I just want to get rid of voodoo and get my phone back to how it was before. Im sorry for the terrible description, if there is anything else I need to add just let me know, but please, what can I do to fix my phone? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Can you get into download mode?
If so, ODIN to stock JFD.
you may need to use Vol Up + Power, unlike the normal way which is both volume buttons pressed in.
thank you! I used your guide in your sig, which was very helpful, phone is back to normal, however, all of my apps and what not are gone. I am an idiot and forgot to backup before I made changes, is there any other way that I can get back to the way my phone was before? And after going back to the stock JFD using odin, will I still have voodoo on my phone?
If you used titanium backup, your folder of backups should still be on your internal.
If you did not backup, sorry... hope you have them backed up.
No, you do not have voodoo now.
I did back up all of my app with titanium back up, so do I just have to re-dl titanium back up in the market and then just go from there?
^ Ti Backup needs root, so grab the update.zip from my guide and root (incredibly easy), move it to internal, go to stock recovery, install, reboot, you are rooted.
At this point, before you restore, you need to update to a more recent version of Android. you do NOT want to be stuck on JFD (2.1). I'd suggest a ROM like Trigger... crazy stable, faster and themed (I like it).
THEN you can restore your apps after downloading titanium backup (assuming you have them backed up on your internal already).
also, when I connect to my pc and look at my internal sd, the voodoo folder is still there
sorry Im a complete noob to this stuff
Sounds like somebodies got a lot of apps to download againlol. Now you'll remember to get TB and make a backup, heheh, but oh well its a learning experience really! If you have any apps that you paid forl at least gmail will remember that and you will see them as purchased, but unfortunately you'll still have to search for them individually.

whats in it?
- prob just a bunch of logz(lol) just ignore it
^^ the voodoo folder is there b/c you did not format your card *no reason to*
when/if you flash trigger, it will convert you to EXT4 file system (voodoo). This IS okay and not a big deal. Not sure what site you went to, but I have 190% faith in the Trigger ROM and voodoo.. both have very talented people supporting it.
^ Paid apps do not need to be searched for. Look in My Apps, they are all there. He also apparently DID make a backup at some point so lets not go bashing the guy.
I do agree to backup often.
I don't think theyre on my internal anymore, I did a clear cache, factory reset when my phone was initially messed up and I think thats where my problem lies. and as for the rom, what are your thoughts on the TW bionix rom? I initially was trying to root and install this rom

You can do whatever you want with it if ur just gonna ODIN and re-flash. I just thought this was funny my bad. I wouldn't be too concerned with it really. Just leave it alone.
- If in fact you made a backup with TB and moved it to ur PC you could replace that back into the /sdcard/ and when you re-download TB just run the restore batch. BOOM! good to go. If not then oh well.
- The "myapps" will show you all your purchased ROMs so you will not need to research for them, just need to re-download them but any "free" apps will need to be researched and redownloaded.
- My friend has a Nexus S and she says that when she does an initial setup after flashing any ROM the gmail sync automatically downloads all her purchased apps. Thats what I was refering to cuz that would be friggin titz!
- Team Whiskey ROMs are proven and stable Bionix is a great choice to flash.
Good luck!
^ GB restores automatically, while good for some.. I hate it. Takes longer to download/install than restoring AND it doesn't restore the data (boo)

Failed OTA - Determining which system apps are missing?

OK, I'm a noob and made the noob mistake of deleting (rather than freezing) some system apps after rooting. Won't make that mistake again.
I do not have backups nor am I completely sure which apps are missing. As a result of these missing apps I cannot complete the latest OTA update.
I downloaded a system dump and noted a few apk files in it that were not on my system though I believe that there are other apk files missing which are not in the system dump (MyLibrary, WebStorage etc) so I am not sure the particular system dump I got is up to date.
Copying the apk files to my system\app folder did not help, the update still fails.
I seem to recall seeing instructions somewhere for manual installation via power/down volume which would allow you to see a text dump of the update with reports of missing files or mismatched CRC's. I cannot find this again but such a thing would help me determine what is missing so that I can then attempt to find replacement apk files.
Sorry for being such a noob. Can anyone help?
Thanks
Made the same mistake when upgrading to ICS from Honeycomb...
If you get the previous update (the one your running now) from the Asus website, extract the update file and place it in one of the folders on the tablet, (I forgot which folder, sorry...) reboot and the tab will recognize it and prompt you to update. Once that update is finished installing, you should have all your bloat back. Delete the update file from the tab since you don't need it anymore, and then try to update to the most recent OTA Update.
Just do a search in the TFP forums and you should find complete instructions on how to do this.
I'm just assuming this will work for ICS to ICS... because it worked for me when I updated to ICS to Honeycomb...
Hope this method works for you.
I had the same issue.
Download:
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePAD/TF201/US_epaduser9_4_2_11UpdateLauncher.zip
Once downloaded, extract the contents of the zip file (yes, its another zip file of the same name inside) to your MICRO SD. put your micro SD in your TF201 (or eject and re-insert if you copied via cable)
Once the card is mounted you will see a triangle with an "!" in the notification area. Touch the notification and it will open a dialogue to install the manual update.
You will lose root, even with OTA Rootkeeper.
Re-root your device. Install OTA Rootkeeper if you have not already. Run Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. Protect your su.
Check for updates. Install .13 OTA.

Should be a lesson learned. Stop messing with system apps. Always causes problems one way or another. The apps included are nothing to even be considered bloat. I still have everything installed n prime super fast. If anything just freeze the apps, never delete them unless u always want to have failed OTA.

I agree completely, and my lesson is learned. But why on earth would a freaking E-reader app be a system app?
That was my hangup. AsusReader a/k/a the My Library app.
And mine was backed up with Titanium, which obviously bungled it since it would not restore.

I went through the same thing on my Atrix phone. Rooted n went messing around deleting at&t bloatware. It killed my OTA updating. That's why now I'm still on froyo on it. Never bothered to manually update it. Still works great on froyo though. But I learned my lesson from that.

I would totally donate to anyone who took the time to figure this phone out. When I went to the T-Mobile store, I was looking for the L9, which appears to have a strong modding community behind it, but they didn't have it in-store and I was in a pinch, so here I sit with a completely stock experience in my pocket. Not the worst stock experience, surely, but still stock.

I'm here to help in anyway people. Metropcs, rooted, limited experience from way back when android was a "sprocket"...ha ha. We can get this device cranking out kit kat crazy mods!
lg f6 help...Please help save a guy from bricking!
So I apologize if Im posting in the wrong spot but I noticed yall are still working on the F6...so I figured this made sense...
I thought I knew exactly what I wasdoing but did not....I was lucky enough to find patience enough to read up before flashing...I see the threads posted on how to root, backup, and restore this phone...but all those threads explain it using so0ftware other than I have... Since I made some moves before truly knowing what I was doing...I'd like to just stick wiith what i got for the moment and see if yall, as the experts can guide me down the runway...
Heres What I have so far:
1. I DO have root access
2. I DO have SuperSU and it seems to be working in the sense that it keeps logs...but sometimes it gives me a binary error. (I have NOT et converted SuperSU into a system app...bc im unclear if its necessary after reading a few different threads)
3. I DO have Root Browser' which I use to shuffle things around. (I DO have the /system and /data folders relocated on my external SD)
4. I DO have Titanium Backup which I used to BU my USER APPS/SYSTEM DATA.
5. I DO have Flashify which I also used to BU my STOCK RECOVERY/KERNEL (I cant seem to figure out where that recovery is being default stored though...Ive been searching high and low.
NOTE: Although im happy I have made it this far...I dont wanna go any further until I know exactly what im doing. I fear that I have missed something small. Something that would be a no brainer to you experts.
I'm unclear of storage requirements...I BELIEVE that I must store all my rooted tools on the external bc the goal is to wipe everything NOT on ext SD.
What I THINK I know is that hypothetically since im backed up...or when im 100% certain everything is....I can just click REBOOT TO RECOVERY MODE under the menu using Titanium.
IF I happen to be correct up to that point....I think my next move is using Titanium to put back the things ive stored on my SD.
In my mind that leaves me with the same ROM...but without the fluff...and now the ability to save to ext SD.....
If I underestand right....currently there are no MOD upgrades available due to difficulty of unlocking the bootlag....or something that sounds likethat...
I have ZERO experience with any of this....I hope what I just shared is at least in the ballpark of the right direction..
THANK YOU for any and all help!

Love xda.....
Is the recovery in "clockworkmod" folder in internal or exteral sd (was on my Metro F6)
And
Have you found this .... MS500][F6] Freedom Kernel Overclocked by GameTheory?
Over at.... here
Its for Metro LG F6 but I already ran tmobile firmware on my metro f6 without any problems....
I hope I can place an external link, as I'm somewhat unclear on if I can or can't.
IF it is wrong, please remove. I've been a member since 06 (That's 2006) I should be able to do so?????
Recovering F6
I agree with MadeFree, that the recovery file should be found in the 'Clockwork Mod' folder, under External SD, when using File Manager. When in recovery mode it should automatically bring up your Rom-backup when you click on Recover from External / (creation date) file name / yes to confirm.
Also, I use the F6 and I have bricked it multiple times while trying to figure out what i can actually do on it, as it only currently has a custom recovery made for it. I have been trying to figure out myself how to recover all the apps, files, pics, videos, etc. when i have to flash to STOCK Rom during brick. Currently, my solution for this was not found in the 'nano-droid backup' (i have been led to believe it could be recovered in RECOVERY MODE) but rather in an app called ROM toolbox from Google store. This does so much more than Titanium Backup does but i still use titanium for backing up a single application if needed. Rom toolbox can also save a copy of the Kernel as well as monitor your apps, make CPU tweaks, make backups using Google drive and much more. But the easiest way I have found for me may be different for you. Currently, my only reliable solution for recovering my data is using ZIP ME, (downloaded from the ROM toolbox app) as well as backing everything up using Google drive. The zip files are nice when not near my computer though. All i have to do after booting up the 'factory reset' is open file manager and look for my zips.
do not be afraid to soft brick (looping, freezes, crashes) when all you have to do is factory reset your phone using key combo or use the firmware followed in from the link provided by Madefree, down below.
