[Q] Noob Questions About Rooting and Updating - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the X10i from China and it's in 1.6
I did the "official" update to 2.1 but lost Marketplace and everything relating to the West (youtube, facebook, twitter).
I wanted to know if I can go back to 1.6 and use the 1 touch root app to root the cell that way.
After I root it, how can I update the Android OS? Also what is the highest OS that can be run on the X10? Can we use 2.2 if we root the cell?
Thanks.

Flash to nordic or global FW then... There is a tutorial at the Development thread. Use z4Root after you upgrade it too 2.1

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Thanks, worked.
Still running on the Chinese Android 2.1 though, no market.
At least it's rooted well enough that I can just add files if I want if I can find them.
Thanks for the help.

Well I did try to flash it to the Global 2.1, but even after it flashed, it was still the same Chinese one. So I guess it's something I did totally wrong then.
So I'll just keep it as it, I'm not sure what else I can do besides constantly trying to flash every copy of global 2.1 I can download and hoping that one of them will take.
Thanks for the advice though.

[Q] How exactly do I update from X10a 1.6(rogers, Canada) to 2.1?

Hi, I've seen so many threads now on this that I'm kind of confused. Can anyone tell me exactly what I need to do to update to 2.1? My phone is a X10a 1.6 on Rogers network in Canada.
Apparently rogers is releasing 2.1 tomorrow so unless u want to root just wait until Friday
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Where did you get that info?
Waiting is the easiest thing. We're potentially so close to the update, you'd have to have a major issue to update with 'unsupported by Rogers' firmware at this point...IMO.
I suppose your right, if the update is in fact tomorrow then there really isn't a point in me doin anything but waiting. I just thought it would take rogers awhile to send out the update, Canada never usually gets anything else the world gets very quickly.

It's really hard to resist I know...up to you. There are tons of threads on it...no one that's done it seems to regret the decision but for me I have nothing wrong with my phone now...so i can wait
I don't believe that it will come out on Friday. I only hope. I have decided that I will do the root explorer method and change the code to Brazil generic unbranded x10a then do the update through pc companion if it does not come out byssunday. Very easy and simple method.

To flash to another country's verions of 2.1 yes, you'd need to root it first, debrand it second and then flash the update.
To install the update from Rogers you wouldn't need to do any of that.
Well you can root your phone with one click root or what ever the bleep its called and then install root explorer from the market or 4 shared and then open system folder then edit default.prop file and edit the country codes. There is another thread on that.
Then do update through pc companion (this is the same software that you will do update with once Rogers releases the update) all you are doing by editing the country code with root explorer is tricking pc companion into thinking you have a debranded Brazilian phone. After you do update it will not be rooted anymore cause the update wipes your phone clean.

WRONG. You don't need to be unlocked OR rooted OR debranded.
Once you put the phone into flash mode, you can flash any signed (official Sony) ROM, including the Global & Nordic generic ROMs (v2.1).
The bootloader hasn't been cracked so there are no custom ROMs (hence no 2.2) but official ROMs from around the world can still be used.
I flash my Rogers X10a a few hours after Nordic was released and a 2nd X10a once global came out. The only issue is that the Rogers APN information has to be entered in manually for 3G/3.5G/HSPA data.
Or you can do a flash but many ppl are scared to go that route as it requires a bit more effort.
My bad. I didn't key into flash part. Listen to the guy with two phones!

[Q] Debrand unlocked phone

Hey guys,
first post here. =D
I have a Vivo branded phone (Carrier from Brazil). It's unlocked, but I can't yet update to 2.1 because unlocking does not unbrand. =/ Vivo is only releasing the 2.1 on the last week of november.
There is a lot of information here in the forum, but I found it a little confuse - too much information.
So my question, is there a safe way to unbrand my 1.6 X10a without rooting it?
Thanks!

Tks! But to do that I need to root right? Another question (sory, i'm new to the android plataform) I must update prom 1.6 to, 2.1 World generic then change the code to 2.1 Brazil generic, right?
How can I save the Branded Firmware if I need it in the future?
So, can anyone confirm that the SEUS method to debrand the X10 still works?

1- if you update your phone from 1.6 to 2.1, the code will stay the same (Brazil stays Brazil) unless you use the flash tool to upgrade with another firmware.
2- You can try to download the flash tool with the right firmware if it's available, else, just use the 12XX-XXXX code on your phone (under the battery on the sticker) and rebrand using the different methods available on XDA.

Where to Start?

Hello, I have an X10 I got from 3 in Australia, it is unlocked and I now use the Optus Network on prepay. The phone uses the Android 1.6 software but from what I understand there is a 2.1 or 2.2 update available.
I'm quite keen to first debrand the 3 phone as I find that I can't use any of the Android features with this network like Maps, YouTube Gmail etc from the icons as they just get a network error. I can manually browse the internet but not use the icons. I can use it when I use 3 network. I took it to Optus but they said it's because it has the 3 branding that they can't help me and I need to debrand it or contact SE.
So I would like to debrand the phone and then update it to the latest software but I'm not sure where to start. I'm not a developer so I need a simple and easy to follow tutorial if there is one.
Start by reading this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825675
Get the flash tool from here and flash your phone
Also suggest rooting your phone, which you can find here
You'll find plenty of resources. If you need more help search the forum and you'll find plenty of answers. Don't worry, you don't need an engineering degree for this. Just follow the instructions.
Good luck.

Which means you can't flash 1.6 FW with it. Read the thread again as that will debrand and update you at the same time.

Same guy this is just about the flasher. Also, in that thread is the link to non-GUI version, some people find it easier to use.
The original flash tool only had 2.1 Nordic (X10i), 1st released and was described from that point of view.
Now there are ROMs for X10i, X10a, most 2.1 generic, some 1.6. The original descriptions have not been fully updated to reflect all.

hey man, its really quite easy. where in aussie are ya? if you are in newy, i'd be happy to help out
otherwise, back everything up that you want to keep (mostly contacts and pics). If you download z4root and titanium backup you can backup any apps that you have installed/bought also!
use the Binary flash tool to install 2.1 over the top of your 1.6 - it does not matter what version you have using Binarys installer - it just works
Then once 2.1 is installed and up and running, then you setup the market and download z4root (click the app to root your phone), titanium backup (to remove any crappy apps u dont want + schedule backups of the ones that u wanna keep).
Hope that all makes sense

[Q] Australian X10a - Debrand & Update

Hi All,
I've recently purchased an X10 and while its quite a nice phone, I'm sure it would be a hell of a lot nicer if it was running 2.1 - some things which are "missing" in 1.6 have started to annoy me haha.
To this end, it would appear Telstra are about the slowest telco on the planet to release an update. My current firmware is as follows:
X10a
Country: Australia, Brand: Telstra
Phone Software Version: 1227-4612_R2BA023 GENERIC
I understand that if I follow a tutorial such as the "Debrand your Xperia X10 [Tutorial]" on xperiax10.net (google finds it, I'm not allowed to link yet sorry!) and debrand it, SEUS will then automatically update my phone to 2.1 next time I try to update.
Can anyone tell me what is a good X10a firmware for use in Australia? Note that it needs to be X10a since I use an 850MHz "nextg" network. The list on the link above appears to give me a rather limited set of choices, none of which sound generic or australian (what makes latin america latin america??).
If anyone could give me some hints that would be most apprecitated!
Thanks,
Tom

And give this a read too - Step By Step Flashing 1.6 - 2.1
Aside of Xperiax10user advice. After you are done with the upgrade to. 504 2.1 version I recommend you to follow this easy thread to install Xrecovery, delete Junk apps and install Zdizihu's JIT v2...

Tom, I had exactly the same issue with Telstra. My brother is with Optus and had his months ago. I finally cracked it and de-branded my phone, installed 2.1 and it all went fine. Trust me its worth it. Then i rooted it and have'nt looked back... goo luck mate
Hi,
Thanks for the advice! I followed the tutorial and updated to 504, then flashed again to .24, however on both of these my bluetooth does not work :-/ Windows 7 shows nothing in the services menu and the phone seems to pair with devices but never connect. Also the .24 ROM available appears to have been a X10i ROM, this doesn't seem to have mattered though as 850MHz HSDPA still seems to work.
Any thoughts on fixing bluetooth?
I haven't installed the rooted version btw and I'm not quite sure what xrecovery does? Thanks!!
Fixed BT - turns out it didn't like to talk to my MacBookPro on Windows - updating Boot Camp drivers to 3.2 fixed that.
As for xrecovery, what does it do? And how does one root 0.24?
Thanks for the help!

[Rogers]Rooted 2.3.3 via Xperia_Play_Release_Generic_UK

Hey, I'm on rogers in Canada and was having a hell of a time getting rooted 2.3.3 on my phone without unlocking the bootloader(no point in unlocking the BL for just root .... especially w/the warranty problems). I figured I'd give Working Root on 2.3.3 ! a try but had trouble finding the right firmware to downgrade to and when I tried to update OTA it kept failing after downloading and trying to install it (looked like it went all the way through the process but the phone would reboot and say "update failed").
1./ Did a clean install of the Xperia_Play_Release_Generic_UK.ftf (it's .184) with flashtool and then re-setup my apns to get 3g etc working. I downloaded the generic ftf off a thread on these forums but couldn't remember exactly which thread so I recompressed it and uploaded it to multiupload to make it a little easier to get all the needed files
2./ Rooted with Chainfire's Gingerbreak apk
3./ OTA update and it worked (before I did a clean install I was having the ota update fail, probably because I had removed a few system apps via root uninstall, I just made sure that all I did this time after the fresh install was root and then update)
Note on Gingerbreak: I've seen this exploit take 5 minutes or a few hours to grant root on devices. Be patient, if it's still hasn't worked try re-seating or swapping your memory card for a different one and try again. Also be sure you're on 2.3.2, SE patched gingerbreak in their release of 2.3.3.
[FAQ]
1./ I don't have ota updates available in my country, will this still work for me?
Answer: Yes, this installs the global firmware to your phone, after that your phone will look for global updates rather than carrier specific updates.
2./

Answer
step 1./ google your carriers apn settings
step 2./ enter them in settings/wireless & networks/mobile network settings/Access Point Names (make sure you set up your mms apn if you want working mms as well, info for your carrier is available on google, that's where I found mine.)
step 3./ Profit
ncaissie said:
Yes you can use wi-fi. and Like I said OTA is safe it is the PC update that bricks.
Just follow those steps. It's easier than I expected.
Edit:
The things not mentioned in the OP is that you need to download a file manager to install the Gingerbreak. And you need to enable the “Unknown Sources” in the apps settings to install Gingerbreak.
After it roots it will reboot and you should see a new app called Superuser in your app list.
Then get Titanium Backup to uninstall thing you don’t want or move apps fully to the SD card. If you are not in the UK the BBC player is no good to you. I think there is a thread with a list of apps you can safely remove

You would have to find that out for yourself, it's in settings/about phone/Software Update/Update Now. If this says no updates available then I guess OTA updates aren't available in that region at the moment.

that's what I think, basically your phone will stop asking for Netherlands ota updates and search the net for UK updates.

Willis111 is right, I performed the process here in the US today and no troubles finding the OTA update, despite the message there was no OTA before I flashed to .184 UK generic. Should work for you as well.

Thanks for confirming
Thanks for the thread. Just one question. I'm on 2.3.3 (no root) and dont want to wait longer for a working 2.3.3 GingerBreak. But i want to keep all my apps/settings. Can i downgrade to .184 UK generic without losing all my data?
Edit:
Another question:
1./ Did a clean install of the Xperia_Play_Release_Generic_UK.ftf with flashtool and then re-setup my apns to get 3g etc working.

If i dont do a clean install...what about the apns? Will they stay too? In my own thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14705145&postcount=4
FrAsErTaG said that i can choose to not flash the userdata. I already found the option within the Flashtool. Are my apns a part of the userdata or will they get overwritten/deleted anyway?
Edit: Forget everything. It worked
I didnt wipe anything or "clean" my system. I just did the downgrade. After that, i got 1 issue. I always got this message: "android.process.acore has stopped". Google said that this is an issue with synchronize the contacts, etc. But i didnt freak out I just installed GingerBreak, did the root, then the OTA, and after OTA everything was fine again. Now i have full rooted 2.3.3

Happy it works!
Thanks for the info, I can confirm that this procedure worked for me as well. I'm now running v2.3.3 Rooted with a locked bootloader on my originally locked R800a from Rogers!
How do you do an OTA update on Rogers if it is not here yet?

My XPlay was originally purchased from Rogers. But since I've had it, I unlocked its network, flashed it with the Generic UK .184 firmware and Rooted it with GingerBreak v1.20. When I checked under "Settings\About phone\Software update\" and manually searched for an update, it was able to find it, download it and install it.
Sweet, Thanks
