[Q] Extremely high data usage on Rogers X10 after 2.1 upgrade - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else noticed that data usage on the Xperia x10 is through the roof on Rogers after upgrading to 2.1?
I have a 500MB plan and my Rogers account says that I have now used 884MB.
There is no way I have used that much data.

Nope, all good here on Rogers 2.1.

are you using a 3rd party app to keep an eye on the usage?

Not as of yet. Currently I have shut this phone off and gone back to my crappy Samsung A736. I will wait untill my billing period reverts and fire it back up again for testing. What app is best for data tracking?

I prefer PhoneUsage, and with it you can set daily limits, too

Check over your bill when it comes. I have a buddy with an x10 on Rogers who noticed a charge for something called "zap video". He found he was using between 1.5 GB per month until he unsubscribed from zap video.
I use my phone fairly heavily and usually use around 500 MB each month with my x10 on 2.1 with a lot of widgets that update from the web.

Im on generic 2.1 and have the same problem, some app is chowing my data when im not even using the phone...the only apps i know that can identify which app it is can only work on 2.2 upwards...any app u guys know that can monitor app per app on generic 2.1?

Try using the app, APNdroid, to stop data when not using it. It has a quick on/off toggle widget for the homescreen.

Get droidwall you can block certain apps from being able to use your data connection

This works the best so far.
It may be that some apps you use have hidden ads.

Great solution, but only works with custom kernel, stock doesn't support netfilters.

I think you are wrong. Droidwall requires iptables firewall to work correctly. You may have had it on your phone, but it wasn't working. Try setting rules and you'll see.

yes i have got that app APNDROID but i dont like to use it coz i use whatsapp which needs my phone to access internet.
The intresting thing is that when i have switched off internet access with the APN app there is a sinc sign on my top toolbar of my phone which means that there is an app continously trying to sync with something, the problem is that i cannot identify witch app it is.

Stock messenger issue

Since updating to 2.1 I've had a few issues with the stock messenger.....a few times I've had send failed messages, then the recipient got the same text several times (lol) and lately I haven't been getting any notification of new texts until I actually open the messenger.
Is there something I can do to resolve this???
btw, I've looked for the stock 2.1 messenger apk around here, but I can't find it....can someone please provide me with a link

Are you AT&T? If so, I had the same problem, especially with long text and MMS sending pics. I believe it was a problem within the APN. I don't know exactly how, but now I have 2 APN'S and the problem seems to be solved. I have MEdia Net and MEdia Net MMS, which is the AT&T brand name for their browser/network. I have tested the every APN setting posted in the forums, and they are the only ones that deliver large pics and 4page texts consistantly. If you need the settings, post here.

yeah, I am using AT&T....that is actually part of my issue, and the other part is that the notification doesn't show up sometimes until I actually open the messenger.
I've downloaded handcent, and re-installed conversations.apk (the 2.1 messenger) just in case, and so far so good, but I haven't tried a really long text or large pic yet...I'll do that and see what happens

We have discussed the task killer apps extensively here. And the consensus seems to be that they actually cause more harm than good.

Agreed if you just installed and use default settings, but if you take the time to hand set it up, it is a really useful app. Especially kill when screen off saves battery and data. I find I still have 30% battery on day 2 without charging. Without it my battery last 1 day max. If task killer effects an app/phone performance, then set it to ignore. No reason not to use it at all. Without it most apps with permissions would run continuously.

My battery is at 62% after more than 48 hours since unplugging it. I am an average user as I browse, text, calls...etc very frequently. I do not use ATK or juice defender anymore as I did not find any difference.

I probably use my phone a lot more than the average person. I run my own business with my phone when I am out of the office, not to mention my new addiction to the xda app.
I check my ATK frequently because every day is a balancing act of battery vs usage. After using my browser for 30 minutes, I can't believe how many of my installed apps are running for no reason...the list is 2 screens long sometimes.
Without ATK I wouldn't have any way to free up my system?? Are you saying apps running in background or when screen off is better than using ATK?? Hard for me to believe, but you haven't mislead me yet, Batman. I'll give it a try and report back.

Even if you see a long list of apps, sometimes it is not the whole app that is running but only part of it for a while to do a certain task. Android then terminates them when they are idle for a period of time. I also have my brightness set on the lowest setting and only switch on WiFi/3G when I use them. You can download toggle widgets (e.g. APNdroid) from the market to make it easier to toggle these settings.
Also, if you have weak 3G coverage in your area, then that also drains the battery as the phone is constantly searching for the 3G network. Therefore, sometimes I switch my network mode to only 2G (or GSM only) networks rather than GSM/WCDMA preferred.
In conclusion, there are many factors that contribute to how fast your battery is drained, and apps running in the background is certainly one of them but, definitely not the only reason.
Let us know how it goes

My solution is handcent It's much better for me than the stock app. The stock app is working, though. I tried mms & sms....both are fine. I found the custom vibrate feature in handcent and now I can actually feel it vibrate when I get a text because it stays on for a full second!!!
Did you uninstall stock app? I'm still trying to figure out why I seem to be the only one who has 2 APNs? It reverts back even if I change it, but it works.

anyone got the retail Xperia Inside Facebook for some rom 2.2
It's integrated with Android stock from SE. So I don't think you'll see it on 2.2.1 Custom ROMs, MIUI and CyanogenMod working.
once the official gb rom is released it might be able to get it running on other roms

Notifications barely use much data, it's plain text.
What would be heavy on data-usage could be the integration of FB Photos in the Gallery.

i got high data usage on my X10 while phone is in sleep mode and i dont know which app is eating my data...thats also why i cnt wait for 2.3 coz there are apps to monitor that but only work from 2.2 upwards.
i think facebook inside is also going to be sooo cool too

You just get them, you don't have to do anything special.
For SMS you need to use stock app, 3rd party apps will not work.

Wouldn't be that much more as the gallery will only display thumbnails (few kb each). The images themselves are external until viewed and cached (probably still low res) or downloaded. So really there should be no particular increase in data over browsing the images with the facebook app, via browser, or using the gallery.

How should the phone know, when you enter your workplace. There has to be some kind of trigger and in fact i dont really think that it is that hard to open the settings and turn wifi on. Create a shortcut or use an unofficial rom f.e. TW mod there you can switch wifi on in the drop down bar.

Yes the iphone has that app...so Android should also. Thats what apps are there for...to make our lives easier.
Was mentioned in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1177372 that roll out will start this weekend.
But what is the trigger for your workplace? Should the wifi turn on 30mins after you say “‘til later honey!“ or what? GPS is more battery expensive than its worth. Tell me how the phone should know when you are at work?

Found a solution already?
Else try Llama from KebabApps. It uses the cell locations for finding your position. No GPS is needed. Can switch a lot of things beside WiFi. Also time dependant tasks are possible.
Honestly I used it some time ago. But my workplace is too near to my home. So it never knew exactly where I am ;-)

I have been trying to keep track of my data usage, its seems that all of apps available manage to show only wifi traffic but not 3g traffic. even I tried to used apps that I used to have also not giving any result.
is it because the apps was design for android v2 not v3?
the data usage show extremely low..

Def go with "My Data manager" it is the best on the market acurate and has a handy small widget.
I personally use "SPB Wireless Monitor" on my tab and also on my Galaxy S+ and it works perfectly.

Magic Jack Error...

Hi to all....
I'm running Nightmare 1.6 and all is working perfect... The only problem I have is with the app Magic Jack.... I get this message: "The installation associated with your device is invalid". I can't setup my account or do anything... It use to work perfect on Nrgz... I tried to install it with Titanium Backup without any luck... This app is very important to me... Please, let me know if there's a fix for this or if you need more info to helps me!
Thanks in advance!
if your app has problems with your current rom settings.. then it could be that it doesn't work on your current rom... you have to keep in mind when the companies that make these apps don't make them for custom roms... so maybe some settings might be off in the build.prop or something else could be missing.. but i would suggest just trying another rom, or going back to stock.. or the rom that you had it previously working on
Oh well... Not the answer I was looking for but... I guess I'll live with it!!
