I'm in love with my phone - TG01 General

One of the reasons I bought the TG01 was its slim design and big screen - still gets attention, especially if I am using TomTom or watching a movie.
With WM6.5, SPB Mobile Shell with Mobilesense, a Mugen 1300mAh battery, 16GB sd card, TomTom and CoPilot, MS Voice Command and of course coreplayer, the phone is pretty much perfect now - yes a 3.5mm headphone socket would be a help but I use motorola bluetooth headphones. And there are all the other apps that xda developers have been kind enough to make. It took a while but I would say this as good as the HD2 now....
So, it's been a year since I bought the phone from Orange for £120 and I have to say I like it more now than when I bought it
What next, time I tried out either a WP7 or Android rom I guess, which is the best way to go - any opinions?

Love it... BUT..

I love your excitement about TG01 and glad there are owners who share the same feeling about this beast, however, your question is already discussed before on this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854332 - you might find it helpful to go through that thread first and then put your input in there?!
PS: If mods and OP agree, please feel free to close this thread so that we keep all the discussions at one place for future users(?)

I'm in love with my TG01
There has been so many negative posts and threads about the TG01 that I just wanted to tell everyone that with some patience and help from the xda developers, is is finally a phone that is as god as (or better) than the others out there.
Feel free to close this thread now, or attach it to the one you provided the link to

questions about gps reciever and software

thinking about getting a bluetooth gps receiver and software. i did a little research but i still didn't get any definite answers for a couple of my questions. can any receiver work with any pocket pc? or can any receiver work with the wizard? can any software work with any gps receiver? if they aren't what are the best match ups for the wizard? I've read that the garmin doesn't work well with the wizard. true or not true?
i just need to know some opinions also of people using a gps receivers and software on their wizards
I use the Nokia LD-3w reciever and TomTom for software. Setup was a little weird with the reciever, although I blame that on the fact that at the time I knew nothing about bluetooth. Since then I've had no complaints about it. Make sure you get a reciever with a SirfStar III chip, that's the most important thing. After that look at battery life and price. The nokia has tremendous battery life, I generally use it for 3 weeks or so in the car between charges.
Holux GPSlim 236 here. Sensitive and good battery life. No issues in pairing.
GPRS Advice
Hi,
Im also interested in using SatNav, I have a MDA Vario! (Also very much a novice!!). Just to clear things up, do you need a seperate Bluetooth GPRS receiver? I thought this phone could receive GPRS? Also ive read somewhere about enabling the GPRS on the phone, is there something else i need to do?!!

Well, no problems on my end with the unit. One caution, if you leave it on your car's dahboard, make sure it is larger than your "defrost" vents. I slammed on the brakes one day and the thing almost disappeared on me. lol. (I guess I could use velcro...hmmm)

Dude, you just got jacked ! Cancel the order while if you can!
You can get a better GPS receiver and a car mount for your Wizard for a fraction of the price you paid for the BT359W. I recommend the iBlue 737 (I use this personally) which goes for ~$90 shipped with the mount:
http://www.buygpsnow.com/i-blue-edi...n-off-powered-gps-ready-cradle-mount-731.aspx

BT GPS
Most BT GPS recievrs work with Wizard. I personally have used Holux, TomTom, iBlue and Rikaline- and they all worked.
SiRF III chip is good and improves both accuracy as well as reception. Battery life would be next important issue.
At present I am using Holux GR 230 XX with TomTom 5.2 as well as MapKing 7. Both run work fine on the wizard.
I don't care about price as long as it comes highly recommended. besides the battery life seems pretty good from the specs. thanks anyway though.

It is highly recommended from one person. If you read the forums and reviews at gpspassion.com, you'll see why everyone is raving about the iBlue 737. And if you think 11 hours is good, the iBlue 737 gets 27 hours. Plus the chip on the iBlue 737 is much more sensitive and acquires signal much faster. There's also another version that has 32 hours of battery life:
http://www.buygpsnow.com/qstarz-bt-q818-32ch-bluetooth-gps-qstarz-818-qstarz-bluetooth-gps-754.aspx
Why have just OK when you can have the BEST??? But if you're happy throwing your money at 2nd-rated products, it's fine with me .

The BT359 works very well for me accross multiple platforms, if the iB737 had been around or if you had been here months ago to recommend it I might have purchased that, who knows. Your tone however, is not appreciated, it makes it sound like you are marketing the product for that website.

Qstarz
I have a Qstarz 810. It's pretty similar to the SIRF III characteristics wise but seems to have better battery life (20 odd hours). The newer models are even more battery efficient.
I have certainly had no probs with it. It is much more sensitive than my old compact flash GPS I had in my PDA.
A friend has the Sirf III based Holux and swears by it.
Holux has comms over USB if it is any good to you, but battery life isnt as good.
I decided Qstarz was slightly better on stats and I wanted the battery life - almost swayed by USB comms on Holux tho.
Either way you get a good senistive GPS.
pdamods.com have some nice mounts with built in sirf III gps for anyone who is interested (and some without).
One question for anyone out there who has used it. External GPS app doesnt work for me. I access GPS direct. Anyone have this working ?

Where can I buy the Shift?

Who can ship anywhere internationally and give the best deal? And does this require CID unlocking? Right now this Shift is the lesser evil, not happy with the size. Then again,I havent seen pictures of somebody actually holding a Shift
where to buy Shift ?
Try ebay. That's where i got mine !

I think Shifts are unlocked at least the ones that are offered on eBay, afaik. But in order to use the WinMo side fully, you have to liberate it, HardSPL and install one of the ROMs available on this forum to enable GPS. HTC crippled WinMo and locked a lot of functionalities such as GPS, SD card access, Phone, Blue Tooth, and WiFi. Currently we are able to get GPS functioning. We are still working on microphone, video, phone, BT, WiFi and SD.
Thanks

i have one for sale, unlocked
used it 3 times since i bought it,
where u located ?
im in canada (toronto)
looking for $1200 usd
let me know if interested
thanks!
Negri Electronics carries them and can ship them anywhere! I've bought numerous devices from them!
Negri - $785!
Just picked up mine here:
http://www.negrielectronics.com/product_info.php?products_id=2159
Free shipping!
Where are you located? I'd like to sell mine. It's been used less than half-dozen times. It's fully unlocked and liberated, but I can put it back to original factory default. I'd sell it for US$1000 if you pay for shipping. I am in Brazil, but I can arrange for a friend who lives in the US to take it up with her so so that you pay only for domestic shipping (if you are in the US, that is!)
Probably you need to look at the market place. There is someone selling it.
Why are you selling your Shift?
Are you not happy with it? I have an AT&T Tilt and it is WAY too small for my eyes and hands. I want a phone that is at least twice this size. Looks like the Shift is ideal for me. I'm trying to scrape up enough $$$ to buy one. But when I saw two folks on this thread wanting to sell theirs it worries me a little...
I wouldnt worry about it. Different people have different needs.
I love the shift and even with the failings (no bluetooth or wifi on windows mobile side, etc) it's a great unit.
But it's not really a phone. If you are looking to replace the tilt you might be better looking at an Advantage. Double the screen size, a powerhouse and also a pretty good phone. The advantage would be a double size increase from the tilt IMHO and the shift a four times increase.

Yes. I completely agree with you. I use my shift most of the time on vista side to take notes and read ebooks and listen to audio books. If I could increase the RAM to 2GB I would like to opt out from Dell 620, which I use for .NET and BizTalk development. Once I am done with Vista, I switch to WinMo to get the emails from various email providers, again as soon as I go into a meeting I switch to Vista. That way I found a job for both Samsung Omnia (phone) and Shift personal communicator. I use my advantage as a GPS, personal communicator (IM, email, SMS). I use my Advantage as personal computing power house. I recently retired HTC Hermes and Tilt before switching to Omnia and Shift. Then I found I might need another system which is not small like phone and not big like shift for majority of communication deals. So, I found HTC Advantage as the solution. I got Omnia as handy camera and camcorder (5MP camera and decent camcorder 640x480 with 30fps) and the latest ROM update from Samsung fixed a lot of issues, but still I find having a keyboard would be easier to do a lot of IM and SMS. . Once I got this Shift, I temporarily retired Sony PRS 500. Eventhough it is cool on eyes while you are reading for more than couple of hours, I feel like carrying a lot of gadgets while flying is painful, taking them out and putting them back into the bags is pretty awful especially if you are running out of time.

Windows Phone 7 for TG01

I was just wondering whether it is worth holding onto hope for the TG01, or should I upgrade to a WP7?!
It all depends on what you want, its not really a question anyone can answer for you. If you feel that you need WP7 then you should upgrade as there isn't any real movement in that area on the TG01, I'm not saying it won't happen but its probably a while off yet. Android is looking promising at the moment though and with the restrictions in place in WP7 like lack of SD card swapping android may be the way forward, but that's only my opinion. I personally will be hanging on to my TG01 for a little while yet, it does what I need the way I like it. I'll try Android and WP7 if they become available but i'm happy enough with 6.5.5 till then.
I hope this is of some help to you

first of all wp7 eill be brought to hd2, then later it might get ported to our tishibas. i highly doubt so though, we have such a small communtiy, and there are lots of restrictions like multitouch. if we do get a working port, ir would be useless, alot of apps will not work on it.

If I was you, I would rather hang on to TG01 as irrespective of bad publicity it got initially (thanks to winmo 6.1) it's an excellent piece of hardware and gadget to be proud of! I have used HD2 and I have used TG01, and looking at it's sleek display, thin frame, light weight -and same power beast within - I don't think there is any winmo 7 or android phone ready to beat it!
It looks promising as pointed here, that we might see android on TG01 - which will be the best thing to happen to this beast. But if we don't I don't see any drawbacks with Sense roms, SPB Shell and even 6.5.5 titanium for now. WM7 porting on TG01 by the looks of it, very unlikely but not impossible. It's a difficult job to do and it won't happen overnight. If you can be patient for few months or even more, you might see android and/or WM7 on your TG01.
But irrespective of OS, I think, the hardware capacity of this beast is awesome!
Cheers guys for all your help, I think I shall be holding onto my tg01 for a little bit longer, the upgrade to WP7 can wait, I think i'd prefer to see it on the TG01 anyway, rather than any other phone
thanks again!

TG01 Rocks Guys
I am so happy with my toshi; even if there is no android or any wm7...!! With the SPB Shell upgrades and the Droid skins and the WM7 skin...you hardly need the actual OS, with this device I can change the UI whenever I want and everytime it becomes as good as using a new device...!! What more you want...!!
No other phone / tab in this display range can match TG01. It surely rocks..!!

An excellent sentiment - and very well put
Sorry all, I am unhappy with my Toshiba TG01 phone.
True it is thin and it looks nice. But it is just not good enough for me.
The only reason why I am hanging on to it is the lack of WP7 phones available through Orange. I've been with them for a long while and Orange have been good for me.
My feelings with regards Android are out at the moment as I would much prefer to stick with windows mobile.
Come on Microsoft get your act together - bring WP7 as more of a competitor; bring SD Card swappable access in; and bring more WP7 phones available to all operators [especially via Orange ]

Nice try!
Of course you now that WP7 will never have a full functionality with the TG01 device. Because of the multi touch function witch miss in TG01!
I think Sense or Shell cover pretty well the User Interface and we will get no further functionality using WP7!
So my question is why everybody looks for WP7 or Android!

Thanks! I personally don't care about multi-touch on a screen this small. As a matter of fact I prefer using a stylus to not only keep the screen clean but also because it's more accurate with my big fingers, again for these small screens. I recently bought a used Viewsonic G-Tablet and the multi-touch is nice on its 10" screen.

I can tell you I'm very happy with fxdjacentyfxd's WM6.5 ROM. His support and tolerance for my newbie questions has been fantastic, to say the least! I really like WM 6.5 because I've previously been using a great XDA WM6.0 ROM on my HTC 8525 for almost three years.
So far I'm not very impressed with Android 2.3 on the G-Tablet, but I'm a total newbie to Android so need more tinkering time. The Vegan 7.0 custom ROM looks good and seems to be fairly fast, though.
I really haven't looked to see what WP7 is all about since it's not available for TG01. I can see where converting multi-touch to a single-touch resistive screen is probably a nightmare. Other than that, with its 1Ghz CPU I would think the TG01 should run it fine.
@aeroflyluby, I posted in this thread because I read through the WP7 forum again this morning and it appears nobody at XDA is working on WP7 for TG01. Of course, your subsequent post indicates otherwise. The TG01 is a great phone, other than the undersized battery (which I've solved with fxdjacentyfxd's help) and the infernal inaccurate battery meter. I don't know if WP7 or an Android port can fix that problem, but anything is worth a try.
Cheers, guys!

[Q] Recommend the SGS2?

I'm currently in the market for a new Android phone, as my current Blackberry Bold is about to die. Would you recommend the Galaxy S2? There's a few different phones out there (HTC Sensation for example), and the Google Nexus Prime at end of year. What do you guys recommend?

Well, you're gonna get a heavily biased answer, asking in the SGS2 forum, but I suspect you already know that. Sounds to me like you just want some reassurance, more than anything else
Get the SGS2 as soon as you can. You will love it!
I've heard of some issues with the SGS, a phone that I was planning to buy last year but had to spend my savings on a new laptop that died instead, so I wanted to make sure that the SGS2 is performing better than the SGS, and that no major problems have been reported (such as the GPS or similar). I've been unable to find any issues with the SGS2, thus why I'm asking if they'd recommend it .
Thanks for your input!

You'll obviously see people with issues on here, as this is a hub for people asking for help with issues. But you'll also find lots of people with no problems at all, like me. It's the fastest, smoothest Android experience I've ever had, and I really do recommend it.
I get a day of regular use out of the battery, or 2 days of minimal use (when it's basically just a phone). GPS and Wifi work perfectly for me, and I don't see any yellow tint on my screen.
Personally, I think it's one of the fastest selling pieces of tech ever made for a very good reason.

I had a Touch Diamond, a Touch HD and then a HD2, and being a Windows developer I thought it was great being able to port my current skills with very little effort. I am now started down the route of app development for Android though. If you've done any java then it'll be a breeze, and if you've done any C# then it's almost as easy. If you've done .Net then you'll get it as well. Android is definitely gonna be around for quite some time. Unfortunately the same can't be said for my old friend Windows Mobile.
Ah well
Its highly recommended by me, no question asked. Even it should be recommended in htc Sensation forum too

Personally, I think it's one of the fastest selling pieces of tech ever made for a very good reason.

ditto......
If you clearly understand what you want out of the phone, you will not have a hard time deciding which phone you want to buy.
For me, the hardware spec of this phone fits almost all of my requirements, plus an active community in this forum, I can decide easily. And I'm very happy with this phone.

[Q] Thinking of buying a GT - Need candid assurance

I'm thinking of getting a GT and have done some research here and other sites. The more I read the more worried I'm becoming whether buying a GT is really a good idea.
My main concerns are the screen issues, newton rings, moisture under the screen, oil slicks, shaky or flickering screen, device not turning on or charging properly, etc.
As with all forums, it's always the problems that get highlighted so I'm finding it difficult to gauge how wide spread these problems are, i.e. do they only affect 1% of the GTs or is it more like 30%? Do Samsung acknowledge there is a screen problem?
I'd like some candid advice from owners whether they are completely happy with their GT and whether they would buy one again if they were buying now?
If it makes any difference I'd be buying the 16GB WiFi only model from the UK.
I am very happy with my wifi galaxy tab10.1. In my opinion this is the best tablet currently available in market.
And I would advice any of my friends to buy this only at this moment.
Regarding newton rings : its acknowledged by Samsung UK and is present in the FAQ system of their website

I really like my tab, and haven't really had any problems. However, I did get some moisture under the screen after I left it laying outside on a hot day, but I just stuck it in the freezer and it went away .
Now, the decision of whether to get a GT... The main downfall is no external sd card (although this may not bother you). It's very thin, light, and looks good (+), but doesn't have the ports (like hdmi or usb) that other HC tabs have now (-). And, it's a bit more expensive than say a transformer, so you should take that into account too. My best advice would be to go somewhere like bestbuy and test them all out, then buy one on Amazon (generally cheaper).
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not too bothered about the lack of external connections as the tab will mainly be used for some web browsing and the odd e-mail. I do however want to root it.
I did also consider the Transformer but the newer serial numbers haven't been successfully rooted yet. TBH, if it was rooted I would probably go for the transformer as it's ~€100 cheaper than the GT and already has the HC3.2 upgrade.
I've had a play with both and liked both. I preferred the GT's physical aspects (size and weight) and am familiar with TW as I have a GS2 so it's my first choice.
My main issues are the screen problems. Would you say the problem exists in all GTs (i.e. design flaw) but only manifests themselves when exposed to higher temperatures or is it something that is affecting only a batch of devices (i.e. manufacturing flaw)? I know that's probably difficult to answer but I'd like to hear opinions none the less.

Thanks for the link. Well judging from that poll the problem seems to affect more than 50% of those that voted. It's not completely clear whether the problem has been fully resolved either. I've asked on that thread for people with screen replacements to say if the new screens have resolved the problem.
I would say i'm a basic user of my tab...i haven't rooted it as no idea how to go about doing that.
Overall for what I wanted it for, it's exceeded my expectations. I haven't encountered any issues with newton rings (touch wood) not lagging.
I have the 32gb wifi only version and I would suggest this is the optimum size. I feel the 16gb would be way too small.
Download dice player or another as this will play most files thrown at it. Also pay for the HDMI and USB adaptor to be able to watch on your TV or to transfer files. I've found this the easiest way to get files onto the tab rather than messing with Kies (don't go there) or using wifi explore options.
I wanted a tab for on the go, watching movies that i've downloaded without the need to convert (as with ipad). For this reason, it's a great tab, light and widescreen! Nice widgets and can customise the home screen. I'm sure I could get more use out of it, but I've come from apple products so new to android.
With the release of the TF2 coming nov 9th I'd definitely wait for that. If the Tegra 3 can run 1080p smoothly I'm making the switch over.
i have the 16gb metallic grey for 3 weeks now. I live in canada, i work as a real estate broker and am using the tab a lot, especially outside.
Here is fall season, temperatures are getting colder. I didnt have any problems with my screen. I really like my tab.
At first, i wanted to wait for TF2, but since they never said the exact date it would be release and that i was waiting since august, i bought the Galaxy 10.1 and i have nothing bad to say.
The only thing (as stated by others) the lack of sd/usb/hdmi slot turn me down a bit but u can fix that easy with thoses 2 : http://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-Galaxy...GY7Y/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1320212663&sr=8-7
and http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/...etail&subsubtype=others-multimedia&returnurl=
I'd wait if I was you. The GT10 is not perfect. Sometimes they have defects (gasp!). And then when you call customer service--they don't even speak the same language and they ask you questions! Can you imagine being asked questions! It's terrible! It's like they're saying "I hate your stupid face." when they ask you to "press the power button and tell me what happens." And performance? Well, it's good, but as soon as something new comes out it will totally suck. Like "wow, how did I ever use that" sucking. It will be abysmally bad! Everyone will laugh at you.
At some point, they will make a perfect piece of technology, then you won't need to ask because it will be perfect. Also, I think you should wait to breathe until the air is perfect. Hold your breath and I will tell you when it's time to breathe.

Oh wow that's very helpful and original.
I don't have 500 bucks to throw at a device that may have a design flaw nor the time to chase around getting it repaired because of persistent problems and so was trying to gauge the reliability of the device and extent of any problems.
You obviously have too much time if you can write all that dribble. If you don't like the topic don't read it.

Dude, there will always be something better coming out, if he wait for that "perfect" product, well he will never buy something.
I didnt want to spoil my money either. Here in canada, with a 3yr sim card data plan, i got a discount and my tab cost me 350$.
Before taking my decision, I've looked at almost all review on the web, went to stores and played with all the tabs.
At the end, it will be a personnal decision. Think about ur needs, no product is perfect, it might defect, thats why u get a warranty when u buy it. For me that was another reason not to buy online, just in case i need service on the tab.
Now for the reliability, since we live in differents parts of the world, i guess nobody can give you a 100% advice about it.
For my two cents, I love my Tab, think it is definitely with getting the 32 GB version, and was unlucky enough to have a problem with the charging connecter breaking. I bought it on Craigslist like-new, but didn't have a receipt. I called Samsung in the middle of the night (24 hour support), and was able to get everything taken care of. It took five minutes, at 1 am Pacific time, speaking to someone with an American accent. They sent me a return label, so I didn't pay a penny to get it repaired, even without proof of purchase. Got it back today, two weeks later. Impressive.
I've got to say, I work with a fair amount of tech support for my job as an audio engineer, and am always amazed with how much better support I get from dealing with companies like Allen & Heath through my work, because we have pro accounts with them all. Samsung was nearly on par with them. That's saying something if you ask me.

Bought the 3G 16 GB version and love it.
The USB adaptor was included free in the box.
This beauty is the next best thing after my wife and kid
16 GB is more than enough, as USB works fine, and if you need extra space there is always the GoFlex Satellite with 500 GB. I think buying 32 GB does not make any sense.
Got also the Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Android 3.0+ and together with the tab it's a killer combo
So if you are really interested in getting a tab, I would go all out for it
Ok, kinda stupid question, but here it goes:
I have played around with the black version of 10.1 16GB 3g version and the back plastic has a somewhat "rubbery feel". What I want to know is whether the white one has the same feeling or it is glossy and "shiny"... Well Iam ordering tomorrow and want to know please! Thanks!
I was going to make my own thread regarding the GT10.1 before buying one, but thought I would just post it in here:
My question is currently from what I know with stock you have to use Kies to transfer data/backup. With a custom ROM does still happen or can I just use it as a mass storage like all android phones?
I planned on getting a 32gb, but don't know if that is the smart choice. With all kinds of cloud and online storage is 32gb even needed? I know it has no expansion on the device itself.
Lastly, one of my reasons for getting a tablet is for reading all my ebooks and especially PDFs, how well do these look on the 10.1?

Since the source hasn't been released, the roms aren't exactly custom but modified stock ones. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). So they work with kies.

So, basically all the owners of a Galaxy Tab have to go the route of Kies to do any kind of data transfer(From PC). Fun.

Well, if indeed I am correct, yes. BUT you can also use dropbox or sent an email to the account that is linked to the tab containing the data. And there is always the option of buying the USB adaptor... Ok I admit that as far as connectivity is concerned, Samsung behaves like Apple but imo what sucks about Apple is not the hardware but the software.
Off topic:
Lets hope that Samsung delivers ICS as well, thus giving us Apple like support!
