Why is the Archos 28 internet tablet/mp3 player so hard to find? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been looking to get some Archos 28 action but it looks like that I will have to order from Best Buy as a special deal. I wish that Archos could take over Sony

Sears?
Have you checked your local Sears stores? Most of their stores should have received at least a few. And they are on sale for $89.99 as of this morning.
Check availability by store on Sears.com.
Good Luck!

they are a small company, in france, with a chinese manufacturer.
despite the demand, they are still small potatoes compared to other companies, and therefore don't get the priority in manufacturing.
huge demand, small overseas market at start. most people in the US for example knew/know nothing about gen5,6,7 etc - or even anything about Archos at all.
i recommend watching the archos official website, as i had a preorder for 2 months at JR.com, saw it go live on the archos.com site and ordered, had it in 3 days. just ahve to be vigilant ...

I tried to get one from a local store but I got tired and simply ordered an Archos 32 directly from the Archos website.

This is a sick deal. Just ordered one.
Hi,
I got mine yesterday and rooted/installed Caulkin's rom. Runs like a dream like 2450 quadrant scores. So nice
Woot woot woot
I ordered one today. Digging through the forums for root instructions and advice. Looking forward to playing with this one on the weekend.
There is going to an influx of Gtab users. I had about 6 friends and family order one lol.

I just saw the Taxesuck discount, but already bought one from Texas. Well it's only 5 bucks .
In for one! Once it arrives I'll NEVER get any work done (of course that was the case with my HD2 too).
One of my sons has been drooling over my Gtab since Christmas, and I've been feeling bad because we had gotten him something else already. So thanks for the chance to 'redeem' myself at less $ !
In for 1...

WOOTED and Registered in a half hour.....
Saw the Viewsonic G Tablet on Slickdeals and went to WOOT. Bought. Went to XDA, looked around. Registered.
Really looking forward to rooting and hopefully having a decent tablet when I go to England in two weeks. Is that possible? Maybe, but I have a LOT to learn for sure.
thank you! just came upon this thread and ordered one for myself!

Your order number 33067964 for 1 ViewSonic gTablet 10.1" Multi-touch Tablet has been received by Woot on 3/23/2011 and your credit card has been charged $310.28.
on 3/23/2011, you successfully wooted.
order 33067964
You want 1
ViewSonic gTablet 10.1" Multi-touch Tablet
You ordered 1 ViewSonic gTablet 10.1” 16GB Multi-touch Tablet - Android 2.2, microSD, USB, 802.11n, Flash, DivX.
which each cost $279.99
for a subtotal of $279.99
plus tax + $25.29
plus shipping + $5.00
for a total of $310.28
Bought one too. Already have a Nook Color rooted 2-3 times, so rooting this one will be a small learning curve. Couldn't resist this price. Went by Office Depot on the way home from work just to look at one and test it. Decided the screen wasn't as poor as some have said. Sure, the viewing angles are bad. But I'll be the only one using it and sharing isn't an issue. Straight on viewing is really sharp. Bottom line, Tegra 2 processor, 10.1 inch, high resolution, 802.11n for $279.99 plus $5 shipping (no tax for me)! That's got to be one of the best deals of the year. Clerk at Office Depot told me they don't have them in stock because the company basically stopped selling them when the new model was announced. He said they would be getting the new one next month. Even so, they had their GTablet "on sale" for $379.99 plus tax!
Guilty too, just ordered a couple myself

Sorry, but woot's shipping is about 7-10 working days and my experience (just two states away) is on the high side of that. I wish they would introduce premium shipping for a few bucks, they would make a lot more money. That's ok, it will be worth the wait. Once you root, install CWM and load a good ROM - you will be glad you pulled the trigger.

Should I pick one up for $250?

Is $250 (CAD) a good deal for this tablet?
I have a Moto Atrix as my smartphone, rooted.
I am interested in tablet for watching videos at home and reading pdfs and ebooks and suchm, as well as playing games.
I believe it is already running g-tab-comb but I would want to update it with something more recent.
I have the opporunity to get this or a dell streak 7 (sealed) for $250.
Is there still good dev support for this tablet? How does the future of it look
i had the gtablet, but sold it. Now with the Android market not showing the G tab on the website, I am sure glad that I sold the G tablet. Get the tablet that has paid the license to Google and has the real market (imho), in otherwords not the Gtablet.

You'd still be able to access the market via the app on the Gtablet itself. you just wouldn't be able to remotely install apps onto your tablet via the market website on a computer.
I use a GTablet (with FlashBack 10.0) I access the Market several times a day. I am able to download new apps, update older apps. No-- my device is not listed, but nevertheless I am able to use the Market.
I had been using an older version of the Market App, and with that I could not get new apps. I could update older apps just fine, but it would NOT download a new app: NO DEVICE. With the new Market App, I have no problems.

I sold mine a while back also. I would put that $250.00 towards something that might have a chance at some ICS love.
The Gtab's screen is great for video, but an IPS screen on a higher end tablet is a must for extended ebook reading. Also the market issue is very minor in my opinion.
I picked mine up less than a week ago, put FB 10.0 on it and I am already selling it and moving to a Transformer or Iconia. The display has really bad viewing angles, other than that it isn't too shabby.

I saw that today as well. (well my wife did). Still only $100 off a 16GB version, I told her not that great of a deal.
To the OP, my advise is not spend one dime with Viewsonic. They abandoned this product 3 months after it's release. Viewsonic has been nothing short of horrible regarding the GTab and it's customers that spent the $300-$400 last winter. I have a perfect one for $200 if you really want one, $225 with dock. It is rooted and running TNT lite 4.4.

HP Touchpad with Android? I didn't know that could be done. I know they were selling for $99 when they went belly-up. I would say go for it. I all you want is a decent 10" tablet running Gingerbread or Honeycomb at a low cost then gtab is one to consider. If you want ICS then you will have to get the lastest tablet (not yet available) with a killer cpu and lots of ram.
So your choices are
1. Low price 10" or 7" (nook color II or Amazon Fire)
2. Medium price 10" like a Acer Iconia, Toshiba or Asus Transformer
3. High price 10" currently being developed for the ICS (New tranformer quadcore etc)
Good luck and have fun.
Woot.com has the Motorola Xoom 32Gig Wifi for $329 today....
And Motorola has stated that the Xoom will get ICS early 2012.
Advantages over Gtablet..
32gig vs. 16gig storage
1280x800 vs. 1024x600 resolution
1 gig vs. 512 meg ram
GPS, Barometer, front and rear cameras
Better viewing angles
Official Google support/Motorola support
Android OS 3.2.1 with stated upgrade to Android OS 4.0
FYI...I have two Gtablets and an Xoom. I'd take the Xoom every day over the Gtablet.

Price reduction at PCWorld!

I've just seen that the Tablet S 16gb model has been reduced to £349.99 at PCWorld. That didn't take long! I might hold fire until after Christmas and see if it drops to £299.99
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/sony-s-tablet-pc-16gb-11318187-pdt.html
And the 32GB model is down from £479.99 to £429.00.
These are pretty significant price drops considering the tablet has only been out for a couple of months. Sales not too good?... Or is there a newer, faster, updated version on the horizon already? Did somebody say quad-core?...

Poor sales.
Only 500 Tablet S' have sold in the UK since September. There was an article about it but can't seem to find it now.
500, in the whole country?!
I'm not sure I believe that, but if it's true then that's shocking. Very poor.
that's impossible
anyways there is no point discussing this..it seems SONY missed the trick to ADVERTISE properly SONY S, see the status of SAMSUNG TAB!!
Samsung Tab become iconic android tab, SONY needs to learn from Samsung..
Anyways, sales are just number, IMO Sony S is better than Galaxy Tab!!

Find that hard to believe, I mean wasnt some shop in UK offering a free LCD Tv with purchase of S Tablet on release? That alone would have broken 500 sales.

Yup that is the link!
Global sales numbers are also below expectations according to reports.
Yes Sony has a great product but they bungled it. For the same price the iPad is a far better package and now the well-marketed kindle fire will destroy the other tablets. There's no way Sony could sell this beauty unless they integrated their content in a cheap and/or elegant way. And that ain't gonna happen.
Not sure why anyone should be shocked that the price has dropped to be honest-it happens all the time with technology and can be expected. When I bought a fancy laptop a few years back, intel released the i3, i5 and i7 a month later and the price of my laptop plummeted.
In the end though, I researched the available tablets like a madman and am completely happy with the sony tab... it does what I bought it for very well, is getting updates and will only get better in time!

Hard to believe indeed . First 100 buyers got free 32 inch led tvs. That would mean a fifth of all sales was from a single morning in a single shop. Maybe the 500 figure is not true. Just playstation association should have created more interest.

Pre order or wait?

Well I'm just a little speculative about some of the specs
For example they say 1080p video playback but the screen is not 1080p...
They do not tell you the clockrate
Does it have nfc?
An unlocked bootloader?
Should I preorder or wait for reviews?
Thanks

what on earth would you want NFC on a tablet for? I already consider it inherently dangerous for phones to have it because you can bet some people will be stupid with their security on that.
ok so what is your recomendation for him? pre order or wait?
i'm sure that someone said some day "why in the hell you want a phone without physical buttons? "

I am waiting...if they can't root it at least, not getting it. Boot loader will remain a issue also. To me, a tablet I can't root is nearly worthless, also, I bought the first batch of the transformer..big mistakes...quality build speaking...I should of waited a few more weeks. Currently selling mine...holding off for the new prime or iPad 3. Or both...

Asus lists the rear camera as 8MP multiple times on their website - asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_Prime_TF201
I haven't seen the clockrate listed but there are demos out there demonstrating how it smokes the Tegra 2 in applications that require the horsepower.
And I would agree - pre order or expect to wait. Of course without an official availability date yet we're all waiting...
Rob
And let's not forget that it'll come with SuperNote. Although it would be great to see a SuperNote Windows app to pair it with...
ahhh, to buy or not to buy. I already know that I'll be reading about what a great tablet it is and it'll make me crazy. I know I'll want one and be pissed that I waited if they sell out or are hard to get. So, that's why I ordred one from Amazon.ca and will hopefully have it for Christmas.
Hopefully....
Buy it in 10 years and it will be super cheap... LOL
Serious: I sort of regret buying the TF101 early as mine had some slight build quality issues. However, I trust Asus has great Q/A now. The Tegra 3 will be clocked at 1.4Ghz and it can be overclocked.
The TF201 is hell of a lot more than the TF101.
Does it have stereo speaker?
If we could pre-order it here in the UK, then I would be pre-ordering it - its gonna be a beast!!

Yes, it has Bluetooth. Specifically V2.1+EDR.
All of the Prime specs are listed here: http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_Prime_TF201/#specifications
I for one regret not getting on the first wave of pre-orders from Amazon.com for $492.
Just changed mine to Newegg.com w/overnight shipping. Now just gotta wait for a release date!
I ordered from newegg with 12 months no interest!!
I should probably get it on Monday of that week unless newegg will ship it on the morning of the 8th and from their NJ warehouse!
I then will need to head to the mall and get the thing ghost armored (hopefully they have the kit for Atleast the screen!)

Spec sheets
To all those asking about bluetooth and clock speed and cameras, etc here are the official spec sheets from Asus and Nvidia.
Asus- http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_Prime_TF201/#specifications
Nvidia- http://www.nvidia.com/object/tegra-superchip.html
And to stay on topic with the thread, I am pre-ordering from an online site that is out of state so I don't pay tax (save a little money = less guilt). I just sold my TF101 on eBay for $450 as well. After the hardship of finding the TF101, pre-order seems smart this time around.
know that Asus haven't set a date for release, But need some help to choose store to preorder from.
Here in Sweden the stores often sets a early date so that costumers placed a order in just there store.. And then the store can change the date several times and you feel ****ed.
What store in USA are the best when it comes to get hold on new products like Prime and that can be trusted when it comes to shipping dates?
Best Buy, newsegg, Tiger Direct, B&H??
So what store use to stick to there word and can be trusted?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
Personally, I go in this order:
Amazon (I'm prime member) > NewEgg > B&H/BestBuy > TigerDirect/Gamestop
Amazon sometimes delays things a bit, but the customer service and return policy outweigh a lot.
NewEgg is usually a safe bet all around (I miss old NewEggs shipping, though)
B&H/BestBuy - B&H has given me a few minor problems in the past, but nothing too bad. BestBuy is of course a huge retail chain, so dealing with returns/information/etc is sometimes frustrating (the "when you know more than the rep" syndrome)
TigreDirect/GameStop - I would avoid these, as there are better alternatives.
It seems like amazon is out of pre orders and new egg doesn't seem to have the 64gb.
I might order from B&H but if it gets delayed by a week or so it might take a while for them to ship it. I know they close early on Fridays don't work on Saturdays and Hanukkah is coming up which means they will be closed for at least the first day of the holiday.

What I mean is, because there is the Acer A510, that is like the Prime (same specs if not better specs) but has lower price then the Prime and there is this ASUS google Tab for just 149$, the Prime can not keep the price it has now.

Tech device like thse are like cars, their value deperciate quickly, as new thing constantly comes out.
So what else is new?
In searching on Acer A510, looks like scuttlebutt from EU blogs is that A510 will sell for €399 in EU and £370 for UK. Price in USD should be same as EUR. Asus TP300 should be priced same. Both will have a tough time competing against iPad 2 at price parity. Don't expect a big marketing push for these models. These are what you call placeholders.
Per Acer press release, A510 will have a 9.8Ah battery for 50% improvement over previous gen. A500/100 had poor battery life. 3.7V also means USB charging is likely doable. OTOH, buh-bye full USB port...
Battery capacity:
A500: 3.26Ah * 7.4V = 24.1 Whr
A100: 1.53Ah * 7.4V = 11.3 Whr
A200: 3.26Ah * 7.4V = 24.1 Whr
A510: 9.80Ah * 3.7V = 36.3 Whr
Re: Prime price cut - Doubt it. More likely is Prime will continue w/ limited availability until new models are intro'ed.
Re: Goog el-cheapo tab - Verge rumor sez $199, which sounds more reasonable. Will probably have OMAP 4430 like Fire/Nook. Hopefully 1280x800. Probably 1GB/8GB RAM/flash.
Geek Qs: Unlocked bootloader? GED w/ direct updates from Goog? Since it's Goog, bet on working GPS. Helps with location-based ads.
Larger implication: Will other vendors be happy? Then again, it's not like there's much action going on in the 7" front. But if Goog lowballs the 7" market, no one will want to step in. How can you compete with a $200 official Google tablet? For better or worse, Goog will have to carry its own ball from now on--at least for the 7".
How would a lowball 7" Goog tab affect the 10" market? Calling all Nostradami...
My magic 8-ball sez it depends on how much enthusiasm Goog can whip up w/ Jelly. In terms of buzz, ICS is clearly buzzed out. 5 months post-launch, and adoption = 0.0000001%. Sales is about excitement first, price second. I don't see too many excited Android peeps here.
And it's not just about the home team. If Win8 tabs hit a home run come fall, Goog will have to carry its own bucket regardless. So might as well start now.

Asus is playing real dumb. Soon as Samsung and other companies put out their high end tablets they will be easy to buy because they know how to release a product and have it available. Who's gonna be searching all over for an Asus when you walk into any electronics store and buy a Samsung/Acer, etc??? If Asus wanted more business they should have flooded the market with their Prime since it is right now the only tegra tablet available, but the dumbo's made it almost impossible to get, even after 3 months on the market. They need to go back to business 101.

Who knows why Asus didnt decide to flood the market with the prime... Maybe the prime was pressured to be released when it wasnt ready yet. Maybe Asus wanted to know how the prime is going to be accepted at its state when released. Maybe they wanted to make the prime a limited edition. Maybe they wanted to leave room for the Pad 300 and Infinity series. Maybe they'll drop the price 100 dollars when the infinity series comes out, like what apple did with Ipad2 and the new Ipad... Who knows... only Asus knows..
Why didn't asus flood the market? Because the ones that didn't sell by the time others put out T3's will gather dust or be sold for very little profit. Would you want to be the store that has a large inventory off first generation Transformers (or like generation tablet's)?
I still think Tegra 3 supply has been limited. I think the best sign of that supply improving will be actual stock of other Tegra 3 devices hitting the street. So far, there's been lots of talk bit nothing actually shipping.

Tell that to HTC. And phones sell in significantly larger quantities than tablets.
HTC One X, One S to launch on April 5 in the U.K.

First the good news: we have an update regarding the HTC One S and HTC One X release dates. Both smartphones are expected to hit the shelves on April 5. Now the not-so-good news: word comes from sources in the U.K., meaning that the U.S. release dates for the two smartphones may vary. The April 5 release date for the Tegra 3 powered HTC One X comes from U.K. carrier O2, which spilled the beans in a tweet this morning. Meanwhile, online retailer Phones4u is already accepting pre-orders for the HTC One S with shipping expected to begin on that very same day.
