Edge/Internet using up all my balance, How to ensure Vibrant remains offline? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
is there any way I can ensure that any of my apps/ syncs / anything does not access internet through whatever mean until I say otherwise?
At home I have Wifi, so it isnt an issue, when I hit the road (I have disabled Data roaming and appl syncs), every now and then, Vibrant starts connecting via Edge and just runs through my Balance
I run Advanced task killer every now and then, still no help.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

Power control widget allows you to easily turn sync off. It should be already installed. Long press on your home screen, choose widget, and look for power control. Hope this helps.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

that was one of the first things i tried...

I use Quick Settings to turn off mobile data when I don't need it. I then turn off wifi when I'm out of range of work and home and only turn those back on when I'm going to explicitly use them.
I'm more of an "update when I tell you to" kind of user so this may or may not work for you.

I'm running Android 2.2 and forget if it was available in 2.1 as well but...
Try looking under Menu -> Settings-> Wireless and Networks -> Mobile Network Settings, uncheck "Use packet data".
This should disable all internet access over the cellular modem while still allowing WiFi (when turned on). No extra apps / widgets, etc necessary.

CDMA 3G timed network shut down

OK all you tweakers. I have a Sprint TP. I am wondering if there is any software or tweaks that will shut off the 3G network after a specified time of inactivity. There was some free software that I downloaded (Hard drive crashed lost the software), but I think it was designed around, only worked on GPRS/Edge phones. It did not work on mine.
Any suggestions.
I used this instructions http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1892787&postcount=84 to disable EVDO and force 1x. Works a treat. But so far I do not see any improvement. It takes the same ~500mA to keep 1x data connection up, same as for EVDO. not sure how this will stack up during the day... But my prediction is that it will not be noticeable.
BTW, data connection is closed automatically when not in use, as far as I understand. You can see grey arrows icon at the top status bar.
Why would you want to force 1X EVDO is faster
Are you talking about shutting off the data connection if you are then download Advanced Configuration Tool and press Menu - More Settings - Connections - Then click on the Sprint on and set the disconnect time.
Yes, you can use Advanced Config > internet options, to turn the data connection off all the time, always on, or manual.
I use data a lot. But 1x sucks up more battery then EVDO.
I know, because I'm stuck on 1x all the time.
There is a force connection registry hack.
HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\HiddenModeOperationPage
Change from 1 to 0
This will open the hidden page in the Phone>options>settings. Scroll down for the Mode of Operation page, and select the one you want.
If you select EVDO only often, it will get annoying clicking the Okay, to the pop up. You can just delete the registry entry for the menu. I cannot recall where it is at the moment. Might be in phone settings. It's called EVDO i belive. Check to make sure the thread says the same thing that the pop up does. Deleting it just gets rid of the box, doesn't stop functionality.
Chanhuff You hit the mark the option in advanced config was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the help
This question is for Chanhuff. I used advanced config, and made the change as you noted. Do you know if this effects connectivity based on staying connected to the network, if you are using the network (EVDO) for a longer period of time than the time out. Will it stay on, does the setting relate to inactivity only?
I set a time out for 10 minutes, and it seemed to effect some of my features that will auto update when they are activated (example: the weather feature on the 3D touchflo front end does not seem to want to connect automatically when launched) when I used the setting.
Also in the advanced config tool when you get into the connection settings the choices for sprint, and for phone as modem are: 1. Always on, 2. Enabled, and 3. Off. I am assuming that you have to have the setting for enabled, and then set the time out check box.
Just getting the hang of Advanced Config, and there is Soooo much to learn.
Also does anyone know what the standard time out is if you do not adjust this setting?
TIA.

HOW TO DISABLE THE "Data connection automatic" in Athena

Hi
I have a issue here.
Whenever I open my athena, it always connect to Data connection automatically ( I am using T-mobile). Even if I try to turn it off, but asap after that it try to connect the data.
(i had the same problem with Kaiser. I could not turn on TOMTOM7 only until I try to turn of Data connection, then asap turn on TT7 it would work).
But actually I only use the phone's calling function.
I don't care about other services from T-mobile, especially I don't know the useness of Data connection in my phone.
So, could u tell me the way to turn it of and only turn on when need.
thanks
Probably the best way is to go to Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections icon > Advanced tab > Select Networks. Select "My Work Network" for both drop-downs. This should force it to only use wifi and not the cell network data connection. However, it may then turn wifi on - I don't know for certain since I use the cell network for data 99.9% of the time.
You could also try to delete the data connection info. I don't know if it will let you delete all connections.
I don't think there's a way to completely stop it from trying to connect to something, as long as some program is requesting a data connection. So the first option might still give you a dialog box telling you it can't connect, and I'm guessing the second option might ask you to set up a data connection.
I use this little tool. Place it in your SD Card and use File Explorer to create a shortcut in Windows/Start Menu/Programs/"to whatever folder you want". Run the application and disable anything you don't like in TMobile Services.
wow.
thank you friend.
i will use it.
it will help me to keep energy, because when we don't use data connection automatic, it will let the phone stay longer.
Wonderful program
thanks so much
this program is wonderful.
it disable GPRS automatic stupid function that we don't use with Tmobile.
Recommend for other friends.
This program is useful when use it with Kaiser, cos I always have to turn of data connection manual and then asap try to turn on TOMTOM7. Now it is free.
Thanks!
That's a great app! Will save me some $$$.

[Q] Connects to mobile network even when wifi is available

Hi all
Not a power user's dilemma I'm afraid but I hope someone can help me out...
What's bugging me is that my wife's LG-P500 incurs a small charge every day because, despite all the settings telling me it should NOT connect to the internet via the mobile network at any time, it somehow still connects - even when wifi is available like at home.
This wouldn't be a big deal normally but because she's on a pre-pay txt only plan her credit gets used up quickly.
My HTC Wildfire uses NO mobile connection at all when I have wifi available. Any ideas why this should be happening with our LG-P500?
Great forums by the way and I'm slightly embarrassed to be raising this probably noob topic here but I can't find an answer anywhere else...
Thanks in advance!
I haven't seen that problem on my P500, with the void echo ROM (the stock firmware didn't stay on the phone long enough for me to try that).
The option to disable it is in:
Settings -> Wireless and network settings -> Mobile networks -> Data enabled (should be unchecked)
Or in the drop-down menu of the notification bar.
I'm not sure about the stock ROM, but on void, an additional icon appears on the notification bar whenever the mobile network is active.
You could also try disabling the option:
Settings -> Accounts & sync settings -> Background data (should be unchecked)
Thanks. I already did all the obvious stuff you mention, having seen it work fine on my Wildfire... Any other ideas out there?
Might this be related to Location Services using Cell tower information ?
Could try turning that off anyway.
If you don't want to use the mobile network for internet access, than go to Settings > Wireless & network settings > Mobile networks > Uncheck Data enabled .
If the network allows you, you can also select Network mode > GSM only, this will also save you some battery. For example, I only use wifi to connect to Internet on my phone, and I also checked the option "Use only 2G networks" (also saves battery), I'm connecting to my operator only for phone calls
What is your Wi-Fi sleep policy settings? Try setting it to Never.
When the phone goes into sleep mode, wifi is turned off to save on battery. May be that's the reason mobile network is getting connected in sleep mode. If u enable wifi policy to never sleep that will drain the battery. You can disable the mobile network from th3 notification bar that should help.
Many thanks for the help guys!
Wifi sleep: good idea, I'll look at that!
Location services: good idea, I'll look at that!
Data enabled: unchecked already.
The problem still strikes me as odd because although I have ALL the same apps (and quite a few more...), I don't have this problem with my little HTC Wildfire...
Update: the only way I could find to resove the issue was to invent and use a nonsense APN...
Wifi sleep was already ticked as "never" by the way.
Thanks again everyone who gave advice.
Yeah, I've also had reason to use an APN named "fake" with a proxy named 'fake", although i use "Z" now to save typing, LOL.
This is one of many things i would do when changing SIMs. I have had one SIM and phone that always set a new APN and this ended up costing me a few bucks in data fees before I re-changed the APN info.
I would also disable the data services, make sure WiFi was on (to provide priority data access) AND enable airplane mode.
Anyway, your experience has inspired me to check more deeply about my data usage. I don't like the idea of my phone doing data without my knowledge while it's in standy.
I prefer to manually choose which connection I would like to use, so if I'm using my data plan such as when I'm out, I go to notification and enable data. I only get 200mb a month so its easier for me than to always keep networks on even when I'm not using them. It also saves on the battery as well.
EDIT: you can check your data usage using 3g watchdog app, find it in android market
It easy to solve. Just install APNdroid
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.code.apndroid
It also has a widget. Works very well.

[Q] Turn off mobile data but leave wifi on?

This might be already posted (I can't find it), but is there a way to turn mobile data off? (And perhaps still leave wifi on?) I find background apps draining my data plan and I need to conserve as much as I can while I go on this vacation, and Wyoming doesn't need me to have status updates and other things.
I have background data and most services I can turn off from the settings but I don't see a way to turn off data without turning wifi off as well, which kind of misses how I want to use it.
Anyone know how to do this?
If you go into the settings and find "Data Manager" then hit "Data Delivery" and uncheck "Data Enabled" that'll do it.
Ahhh thanks!
Also you can enable flight mode then turn WiFi back on
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
But that kills calls. I want calls to be on all the time.
Grab Widgetsoid 2.x from the market.
You can make toggle widgets to turn your mobiledata on off, as well as wifi. It's the quickest, easiest way to do it.
APNdroid would be an easy way to achieve this, and it plays nice w apps like 3Gwatchdog.
Thanks. Ill use apn droid with juicedefender to maximize this beast.

[Q] Issues with Juice Defender App Configuration

Hi,
Hope this is the right place to post this, I'm still mostly a lurker on xda.
Anyways, I've been trying to use Juice Defender Plus' app configuration to manage individual apps' connectivity.
I have virtually all other JD features disabled, as I'm using Tasker instead.
In order to try JD out, I set both Chrome and the stock browser to Disable, which as far as I understand, should cut off these apps' ability to connect to the internet.
But when I open either one and browse to a webpage, it acts as normal. Also, according to the app NetLive, Chrome sometimes connects to the internet in the background.
JD is enabled, and I'm on 4.1.2 stock, unrooted SIII.
What am I missing here?
JD is supposed to be able to block an apps data connection?
Thanks!
EDIT: I've set JD profile to customize, and on top of the settings page it says «all connectivity controls are disabled» . This disappears if I enable e.g. mobile data control, but doesn't change the behavior described above.
