[Q] Anyone got SMB to work with win xp on 2.2? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying various combinations in the sharing and security tabs. However all efforts had failed so far. Anyone got in working before?

Same for me. It worked with 2.1. But no longer with 2.2. With ES File Explorer SMB works, but no streming.

yes,
I had to set up directory level shares on XP and login to the shares with archos for the secure ones, but worked.
ES worked either way, but didn't let me do something so I wanted to use built in.

Try TwonkyMediaServer & set Upnp in the Router.
Works perfect with Stock Filemanager !
Streams Video, Music etc.

Can you share exactly the steps you took to make it work? I think i tried that too and failed. I might have missed something.

Does it work with all media formats? I tried Upnp with windows media player but mkv streaming is not working

I a little lost on this too. At one time, SMB worked on 2.2 (i reset my device alot), it picked up my file server and I could navigate though it using the 'Files' app.
My latest reset, no dice. Doesn't pick up my "\\server\public" (Windows server).
I'd like to know if anyone has a fix for this... I'm a bit pre-occupier with other projects or I'd research it myself.

I've shared my folders on my xp machine, turned off the xp firewall. Now I'm able to access my files through Files and SMB on my Archos 101.

I have tried the exact same thing but it didn't work for my machine

One of the things I did because I have a reasonably secure network is create the shares I wanted (I use $ at end to not create clutter on most computers in house) then I set permissions to everyone all so that it didn't hassle for permission.
On an xp home computer I just received used, I set up a drive level share with a new name and it works, too.
It seemed like I had to connect once through blackmoon or EStrongs before they started showing up in the system files app.
Just tested video streaming through video app, too.

Strange!
2.1 SMB works well. XP and Linux/Samba.
2.2 only Linux works, no longe XP.
Since 2 days: neither XP nor Linux works. No changes at A70 or Server.
ES Explorer works.

windows 7 64bit
installed twonky server....worked just like that no messing watching right now!
only thing thats ever worked for me!

I turned off the XP firewall and it worked. But I don't think this is the trick because there are Vista and W7 boxes on the network that were invisible before and became visible after turning off only he XP firewall. I think changing the firewall caused the SMB system to refresh the whole network

With the new Firmware 2.0.71 SMB on XP works for me.
Earlier with 2.1 and the update to 2.2 it didn't work

i have samba running and never changed the configuration, it was working well win my archos 101, now for some strange reason it's asking for a user and pass (which is not required for my conf, share) and no matter what i do it won't access the files anymore ...
Anybody had that problem ?
is archos/froyo moody :-(

Archos 32 - the smb works on and off on 2.0.71 and 2.1.2 firmware. It is flaky and decides when it wants to work and when it has had enough. lol
I can always access the server, and see the list of files, but after playing some media, it will start with the errors, saying it cannot play media or media server error or something like that. It seems to happen when I have long named nested folders, or long file names and such, seems to overwhelm it and then any media attempted is borked. Once I get these errors, I can not even play locally stored media. Oh, my favorite error is the file incomplete or damaged message, even on local files, or files I had just played. Reboot the device, and I can play the same file it just had an issue with.
Upgrading to 2.1.2 firmware didn't resolve these issues, but fixed others.
I would love samba to be resolved and reliable.
FWIW - the files are being served from a Vista share

I have a password for my XP.
i dont know if it works if you dont have a pw. then the network cant share..
maybe i am wrong.

I have a password on my shares, and I can access them no problems. It is when I am accessing files that the stock video player or stock file manager give me errors with playing the media. Even after getting those errors, I can still access the shares, just can't do anything with the files. smb is still working at that point as I am able to open new shares or open new paths and see new files, this information is not in the fusesmb cache so it is pulling it from the server correctly, it is just when it is going to stream media, primarily video is where I have this issue. I have not tested enough with audio and photos though.

[APP] Samba Fileshare - Wireless access to Android

Just released!
working great on the NC!
Drag & drop directly to/from SD on NC (or any android) over wifi!
Search for "samba fileshare" & download from market
Props to developer FunkyFresh!
This sounds awesome!
So if I'm understanding correctly, you can drop movies, music, and data files from your computer to the NC without hooking up the cable? This is something I'd be very interested in when I get my NC.

You got it! Your NC (or any **ROOTED** wifi enabled android device) will show up in your network and you can navigate the SD card and drag and drop, etc. Just like any other computer share. Pretty sweet!

Oh man, I cannot WAIT for this! Still saving my pennies for the NC, but when I get it this'll be the only way I transfer files.
Thanks!
Would have liked to post this in the dev's forum, but as a newbe, I'm unable to.
I hope someone will show the dev this post

Copying files to phone using Nautilus.
The link in the post above does not fix the problem.
sending files via nautilus to the phone works if the file size is under 65kb. If above that size the copying error "invalid argument" is returned. I have also found that the linux dolphin file manager will send any size file to the phone but cannot retrieve them.
I do hope this helps the dev, as I think the app is a superb piece of work.

Another method, if you don't like using the USB cable to transfer, is to download SwiFTP to the NC and then run a client like Filezilla on your host machine. SwiFTP will make your NC a FTP server that you can connect to over WiFi and upload files. That's how I've been transferring a lot of my stuff.

I've been looking for something like this, thank you!!
Runs beautifully
Very nice! Up and running on Nook Color and Droid X in under 5 mins. Working flawlessly to access via explorer in Win7 64bit.
Works on one computer not the other??

I have used this all day. I love it. This plus adb wireless has me never plugging my nook into the laptop.
I've been using Awesome drop to do this for a while check it out as well
Great app. Works really well. Previously I was using WiFi File Explorer. The problem was that it worked through web browser, which meant no copying of complete folders or multiple files.
With Samba it is just like browsing another drive on Windows Explorer.

Beat me to it. I was going to recommend Awesome Drop as well. It also works over 3G on your phone to boot.
Was having trouble connecting to my HTC Desire HD due to it not accepting broadcasts. Tried to fix with 'HTC UDP broadcast fix' app but that was useless as it doesn't ask for super user permissions!?!?
easy work around..... a manual arp entry for the Desire HD on my windows machine.
run cmd as admin..... then
C:\Windows\system32>arp -s ip-address-of-phone MAC-address-of-phone
bingo, happy to finally say 'great app!'
thanks!
Can somebody tell me how to use this app? I'm on a mac. Thanks.
Hello,
I am trying to add /mnt/usbhost1 to the shared folders. Is it /etc/smb.conf that I should edit?

For those of the unix persuation, I can recommend DropBear SSH server. Works well with CM10. I use putty (and pscp) on the pc side.

[Q] Access my Windows 7 network

This is probably a n00b question (which is appropriate since I'm a n00b . . .) but I have a home server running Win7. All my movies and photos and music are on it. I have no problems using USB to transfer media to my Streak (and to my awesome, dirt cheap Chinese tablet), but it would be great to be able to just connect to my network shares and copy the files over the WiFi. Is there an Android app that can do this? Paid apps OK.
If you just want to copy the files you can use ES File Explorer, SwiFTP, AndFTP, or you can turn your phone into a Samba server and mount your SD Card as a network share and use windows explorer to copy to your phone.
ES Explorer worked great getting to FTP server. Getting to a LAN computer required me to enter the LAN IP address as a "server" and also woked fine.

connecting tab 10.1 to OS Lion.... help!

hi all
Have tried to connect Tab 10.1 to my mac but no joy. Apparently OS lion doesnt support kies BUT can i connect via usb in the same way i would on galaxy s 2? I cant find any info anywhere to help.
I want to transfer files from mac to tablet and using bluetoothis too slow due to file size.
Thanks
I'm interest too
try ftp
don't know about the usb hookup but i'm running osx leopard and found that the easiest way to connect to my macbook is with an ftp connection. i'm using cyberduck (free) on my macbook and an app called file expert on my tab. file expert is like astro, but it allows you to share files via an ftp connection.
once you get it set up your tab file tree will show up on your macbook screen and then you can just drag/drop from finder. the whole setup process took me like 5 minutes...
on my home wifi network i'm getting transfer rates of about 3mps. a little slow for huge files, like movies, but perfectly fine for anything else. it's actually really nice not having to hook up with a cable. i may just use this as my go-to setup even when android file transfer get's updated for the tab.
if you google it there's a thread somewhere that details how to set this up...

http://www.simplehelp.net/2011/07/05/how-to-transfer-files-from-your-mac-to-your-android-tablet/ this must do it!
If you are wanting to sync with files and playlists in iTunes, i use iSyncr. There are free options for USB amd WiFi as well as Mac/PC. The full versions are only $.99 if i recall. Ive used it on my Hero, Evo, Epic, Transformer, and now Galaxy Tab10.1. I have synchronized videos, podcasts, and music. Not really tried photos. Another useful function: it has an option to push new photos, amazon mp3, and video files from your android device to your computer.
The developers are responsive and nice to deal with. So I highly recommend as this solution as stood the test of time and Android updates. That says alot as ive noticed some apps can easily fall off the market or become out of date.

[Q] Network File Transfers & Browser App?

can anyone tell me a app with which i can connect to the files that are on my file server
ES file explorer in android for example ... but webos?
thanks!
Interested in this as well..
if you know how to use ssh and sftp, that would be your best option, since there's an ssh server and sftp app in the preware app browser.
that preware app seems to have bricked my device :-( so first I have to fix that, but you are right, that was my first thought as well.... I will try that as soon as the device is fixed (long night :-( )
[Q] Network File Transfers
Anyone know an app or method for transferring files over to the Touchpad? The actual file, not just streaming video or whatnot. I picked up a touchstone, so it would be cool not to have to plug wires in... ever.
I'm a similar boat but would actually be ok with just the ability to stream media from a windows file share.
Closest I've found but haven't tested is the following:
ugh I can't post external links
do a google search for webos xorg and it should be the 3rd link down titled: IOBox - PC File Syncing (xorg tools) - WebOS Internals
from what I see it's just a way to create a mountpoint to a windows CIFS share. Would be nicer if something like android's file expert existed.
To have a simple network browser on the Touchpad would make it 10x more usable.
that is one of the things webos lacks of :/
i cant tell my girlfriend to ssh onto the homeserver just to watch a movie or pictures.
maybe some dev could make an ugly but working app for that
with preware you can use ssh and sftp for cli transfer.
but a network file browser would be alot nicer imho

No, but you could set it up for her on the tablet so she just has to launch it and then set up and sftp client on her computer such as filezilla. After that, it's just a matter of dragging and dropping files into filezilla.

Yep, nothing really out there until someone writes one for it
is there any news or ideas?...does any one know the devs of ES file explorer ... is there such a huge difference between web os and android ...
.. 10 dollars for such an app from me
(having that app - I would not need any android ...)
I use this:
http://www.precentral.net/tbtransfer
still in alpha but good enough for small files. Not recommended for files >100Mb as it takes much longer compared to usb cable.
perfect, thanks.
is that any unsecure, not beeing protected in any way?...
I think it only works with computers connected on the same router.

I understand you are looking for an app, but I installed the uberkernel which supports mounting of remote shares. There is a good how to if you look on google but basically you update your kernel to uberkernal or f15c, install Internalz from preware, add a line to the file /etc/fstab, and execute a mount -a command in a command line. Now I am able to browse my network share and copy files back and forth. The only problem I ran into was that I was trying to mount a sub folder of my shared folder but you can only mount the shared folder itself. I went crazy trying to figure that one out when it was actually rather obvious...
Wifi file transfer
Is there an app for touchpad like ES File Explorer where you can transfer files to your desktop/tablet wirelessly through a local wifi network?
I use wifi media sync works perfect for me.
Cheers

Access windows shared folders in android

Hi all...
I've been searching for an app or a way to be able to access the shared folders of my desktop PC in my android mobile (Huawei U8650 not rooted) and my tablet (Acer A100 also not rooted).
I want to be able to watch my movies in the shared folders or read my ebooks like I do from my laptop. The PC is connected with a wifi rooter as all the rest devices. Since the laptops can access the shared files, I guess my android devices should also be able to do it... but how...?
Does anybody know a way... a simple and 'stable' way...
cant believe none has posted a reply for you yet, but anyway download ES File Explorer
you can use this ref to setup
http://www.guidingtech.com/10885/access-shared-windows-folders-android-wifi/
It does the job but is slow. I've tried download music/movies over from shared folder and it takes ages - and sometimes just stalls in the middle and you can do nothing about it.
while sometimes it can do a good job. bit of a hit and a miss really, for large files - definitely a miss.
Thanx for the reply...
I got it..
Sent from my A100 using Tapatalk
I use this and it does have issues but for me, they are to do with using multiple files (moving, deleting, etc). For movies and music, it works just fine.
Although I use UPNPlay for music.
