Kernel sources - Android

I have a Garminfone and have done a lot of Rom hacking with it so far, enough that I want to port cyanogen to it now. In the config.gz file there are references to Garmin specific items... how do I go about figuring what is included in the kernel and if the stock one might work with the right config settings. I know that they load a few ko modules at boot, but I don't know the requirements for when they must release kernel sources and what to do with it if they do.
I know they have released some in the past for the a10 but not the a50, and none for the 2.1 build.
I do know that they use the 2.6.29 kernel so is there a chance that I could use the current kernel with froyo?
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Is it usual to base newer FW on older Kernels. Someone also says Android 1.6 was based on 2.6.29???

It shouldn't really make any difference in this case. It's definitely not a 'fake' Froyo as that person is calling it.
When comparing Archos' kernel (it's included in their GPL package) with Android's kernel 2.6.29, there are a lot of differences, about 1000 files changed. I guess they've added some omap patches (I'm not allowed to post external links, yet, so let me describe the git repository: git (dot) kernel (dot) org/?p=linux/kernel/git/tmlind/linux-omap-2.6.git) or even use the omap kernel, because Archos' kernel suffix is also "-omap1".
Good to see that the omap guys are up-to-date with their kernel. So... let's try to make it work on our Archos devices!

Kernel upgrading

I have been breaking my head on finding some guide on how to upgrade earlier version of android kernel to new one. I find out that it can be done with patching(???) with some files that will include new kernel files to old kernel and upgrade it to another newer version. In my case I have tegra device with 2.6.32 kernel but there's nvidia tegra git and newer kernel versions(even 3.0) I think that files like this or this are kernel patches?
Please, help me?!?!
If this isn't feasible, please, tell me, I won't break my head anymore!!!

Please tell me how to compile a 3.x kernel from sources of 2.x kernel (i know it won't be fully functional,i just need a point to start i think then i'll be able fix bugs in C lang).
what i've done - downloaded 3.0.63 source from kernel.org.
there was a config for msm devices,i used it and configured it according to msm7x30 board (which i have) and built it with that config.
build was successful and i got zImage and wireless.ko.
But i'm still afraid of flashing it as i doubt (because i've not added single file from 2.x source) that may be it'll hard brick my device.So please devs tell me some basics of porting newer kernel.

[Q] How to build CM11 for a legacy device?

I have a LG P350 which development has stopped but i want to keep it updated, i have my computer ready for building, also i have kernel sources, Cyanogenmod 11 and 10.1 sources too, (I don't know exactly if 10.1 sources could help) and i know that i need to apply patches to work on Armv6 but i don't know how to apply them to the source code, also i don't know if i would just need the pure source code to build or i need to do more modifications to it and finally, i don't know if the rom would work with 2.36 kernel which it's the most stable one for this device, i'm very new in this but i know that i can keep update my little phone, thank you all in advance for help.

Hello, looking at your situation here is what I can conclude. First off you will need to change things for building on ARMv6 architecture, check this out for example. But your biggest problem will be that Android 4.0+ uses Linux kernel version 3.0+, and with the 2.36 kernel you have a lot of things will be broken and need fixing. That being said if your up for the challenge for it cause that's what were all about .

Well, i got this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2144790 that is the most similar phone talking about hardware, it has 3.0 kernel working well so i thought i could port it, i found this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15961306/porting-kernel-from-another-device so i think i would have less problems due hardware similarities (Look here http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3516&idPhone2=3735 ) so, if i have cm11 pure sources, i add this kernel sources and some patches i would have it booting? Sorry for this very dumb question but, i didn't get at all about the armv6 part, how to apply patches, which i would need and all that, i really want to learn about this so thank you for this answer and the next ones :good:

The best way to start is use the ARMv6 branch of Cyanogenmod 11, replace the CM 10.1 in the previous linked build guide with cm-11.0 ("repo init -u git://github.com/androidarmv6/android.git -b cm-11.0"), and then to direct the build to use your kernel take a look at this guide on integrated kernel building with Cyanogenmod.

Making an own android image?

Hello everybody. I love this community and I have been lurking for a long time.
I have noticed on a foreign language forum that some people were offering a custom rom for my android 9 TV box.
The chinese box is based on a s905x3 CPU and has a mediatek wifi chip for which it is hard (if not impossible to find the wifi drivers).
The site claims that the image was made by modifying the stock rom that came with the box. Is this possible or do all custom roms need to be build from the source?
The custom rom I want to make is going to replace the launcher with kodi.
I am prepared to build the whole rom from source but I do have a couple of questions.
Since the mediatek wifi drivers cannot be found how would I go about including the binary for the wifi?
I have noticed that the box that I have uses a .ko (kernel object) module to drive the wifi chip.
Can I include these kernel objects in build? It is a shame that the kernel is built as a 32bit system. Would that mean that I can only compile a 32bit kernel if I were to reuse those kernel modules and binaries?
Another idea is to perhaps use the kernel from coreelec in my build since it seems to include a lot of drivers.
Is it possible to use a kernel from something like coreelec but use the source from AOSP for the rest of my build?
Is there anything else that I should be aware of?
