[Q] can't root, can't delete anything - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a used vibrant... sadly it has a huge problem.
Problem consists of:
1.Can't remove previous user gmail account
2. Can't download apps from market
3. If an app is installed to external sd, it will install.
4. If anything is put on the phone (pictures, apps, music), it will be removed after the phone is restarted.
5. Capturing picture from camera, if the file put in internal memory, it can't be opened or sometimes error.
6. Receiving mp3 or mp4 file from bluetooth that put in internal memory, all files gonna error & can't be open.
7. can't root the phone because everything is WIPE while restarting the phone include the update.zip that placed in internal memory.
8. some old photos can't be delete from internal memory, once the phone is restart, those photos are appear again.
Attemps to fix include:
1.Formating internal and external sd
2.Wiping data in recovery
3.Flashing multiple roms in recovery
4.using odin with repartition checked
now i'm using JI6
anybody can help pleaseeee.
thank you

Wait, you used ODIN and the other account is still logged in? If that's the case then it doesn't sound like ODIN is working. ODIN if i'm not mistaken is basically re-writing everything from the ground up, bootloader, recovery, radio, kernel, rom. Can you give us a little more info such as what happens when you flash another rom, or after you use odin.
One other thing, you mentioned that you can't root the phone, yet you said that you have tried to install other roms. Are you sure you're doing everything properly? In ODIN does the console recognize your phone? Can you get into download mode?

Yeah, something in the OP is NOT correct.
OP, could you try the ALT METHOD in the NOOB GUIDE in my signature. It will take care of everything as I have used it many times as well as others. It will give you root, jk2 froyo and then you can flash on top of it.... no way in previous data should be stored.
Also, didnt see you listed a factoy reset which is in the settings options.

@Paging :
Of course Odin recognize my phone & I can get to download mode or recovery mode. I try using odin to flash the ROM to JI6. But everthing inside the internal memory is not wipe. Not much differences after flashing. But everytime I restart my phone, there is a pop-up message that said "sorry can't open maps....." or "sorry can't open amazone...." Those old photos that stored in internal memory is not wipe and the gmail account also not erased / remove.
As I said before, I don't know what should I do for rooting since the phone gonna wipe out all new file. When I put update.zip in the root, it's wipe when I restart my phone. So, how can I use this file in recovery mode ? When I choose "reinstall package"... it said :
E:can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
I tried using "one click root". It's useless either
What I've done so far is : I can flash the rom to JI6, JI2 and JK2 (all using Odin). Now I'm running in JI6. While flashing using odin, I don't tick the "re-partition" box. So far this this phone is working, but have much trouble as I mentioned above.
@s15274n :
in your noob guide, it said that :
I have already renamed the file update.zip so all that is required is moving this to your internal memory, NOT in a folder. You should use a file manager (or your PC) so that it appears like this:
sdcard/update.zip
1. Download the attached zip and rename to: update.zip
2. On your device, navigate to Settings > Applications > USB settings and select Mass storage
3. Plug your device into your computer, select mount USB from your device's pull-down window
4. Copy the update.zip to the INTERNAL SD memory (~14gb on this drive, not the one w/ Avatar if you've still got the 2gb SD card in)
5. Turn your phone off.
6. Hold down volume up and volume down while powering on the phone, this should get you to a recovery menu, you may have to try this a few times.
7. In Recovery menu select 'Reinstall Packages' (use vol_down then power to select)
when I connect the phone to PC, I can see the 13.6GB internal memory. I can see the folders : DCIM, data, amazonmp3, mobi_drm, slacker svox, Android and SD (external sd).
BUT I can't see sdcard/.
There is another SD folder which is hidden folder.
I already put update.zip file in the root directory, not inside of those folders. But it's wipe after the phone restart. So I try the frustating way, I copy update.zip file to root, and to all those folder include the hidden SD folder. It still not working. All those files wiped after my phone restart.
I haven't install any program / application inside my phone because it's gonna wipe after restart. I check my "sd card & phone storage", it said that
Phone storage:
Total space 13.18GB
Available space 13.15GB
Application Storage :
Available Space : 1.6GB
Is that normal ? Why the application storage is so small ?????
of couse I try the factory reset. I already unmount internal memory & format it.
But... those old photos & gmail account is still untouchable.
any idea how to fix this problem ?
How if I using "one click unroot" ? is it safe ?
please help me.

try doing a phone data reset
you will find that under settings > privacy > reset phone data
also, make sure you're micoSD is plugged in. 2 mintues ago i was having the same exact problems as you were having so i finally decided to give it a one last go before calling it a night. I plugged my microSD card in and re-attempted to root my phone and surprisingly that did the trick....it could be just a coincidence though
good luck!

Unfortunately the phone data reset did not solve the issue.
OK, after playing with the phone somemore, I found out that I can temporarily root my vibrant using the OCLF 2.3.0 - Z4Root app; I verified this by running the "su" command under terminal emulator. However once the phone is restarted, the su/root privilege is gone and I would have to install OCLF and run the Z4Root app again to gain root access. I don't think this is normal?
What's strange is that I can flash different ROMs using Odin without any issue, but I simply can't root the phone permanently. Does any one have any more idea I can try?

i had the same problem as you my friend.
every night im trying all i can to delete the undeleted files but no success..
i had the exact problem as you with my galaxy s.
please help us.
when i reboot all apps are force closing even my bluetooth cant turn on because
its force closing also.

OP,
I would:
- remove external SD card
- desktop > menu > settings > SD and phone storage > format phone storage.
- ODIN back to original stock, JDF. follow the ODIN instruction here.
This should put your phone back to the original stock. There should be none of the old system data, kernel, root or anything. Your SD card should also be clear of all old data, which could be preventing permanent rooting. From this point you should be able to root, install cwr and flash roms at will.
I don't think there is a way for data to survive a JDF odin nor an SD card format.

i think THIS is a situation where you SHOULD check re-partition on ODIN. your doings omething wrong on ODIN.

same, but some people suggest against it, but this would be a situation where i wouldn't listen to them because you really do NEED to erase everything.

been trying to download every firmware hoping some miracle would actually erase everthing..

@jamir5:
so what did u use for your ROM ?
Now I'm back to JFD... everything is back like the factory reset, but those problems still remains. At least there are no pop-up error message anymore.
I don't know what should I do now ? even factory reset or repartition using odin still can't help us. hik...hikss.....
I'm start to thinking that it's a hardware problem.

same here flashed to stock rom force closures are gone bluetooth working again but still cant delete wipe or access the internal sd..tried every solution u could but no luck..

[Q] HELP! "Download Manager" ruined my phone

Hello
I downloaded an app called 'To Do List' and it created a folder called "download manager" on my SD card which i have since managed to delete.
However, everytime i boot my Hero, it takes a long time to start and always gives me the message that touch input settings is not responding and i have to force close. And then my keyboard does not work. Also, since installing this app my phone does not recognise the SD card. It says "Unavailable" in Settings > SD Card & Phone storage.
I put my SD card in a card reader and connected it to my PC and it recognises it and this is where i deleted the "download manager" folder.
Since then i have installed two different Roms and both are still giving me the same problem.
I have since deleted the app but i think the problem is there is a file called "download manager" in:
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications
When i click on it, it gives me the option to "Clear data" . So i click on that and it tells me it will permanently delete all of this applications data. However, when i reboot the phone the file is stiill there and running.
I'm no expert but i think this is what's causing the problem. Is there any way i can delete this file so it never comes back cos its really getting on my nerves that my phone isn't working properly.
I have done a factory data reset several times but still i have the same problem.
I have done the reset through Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset.
When installing the new rom i have done data wipe, cache wipe and dalvik wipe.
Still the little ****** doesn't go away.
Can somebody please help?
Thank you.
try an Sd card wipe as well when flashing a new rom.. including wiping your ext partition and then re forming.. that is if you are using an ext apps2sd
i'm reluctant to re-format my SD card because i have a lot of music/photos etc stored on there. i do have them backed up on my PC however it does take a long time to drag them onto my SD card.
I deleted the download manager file from my sd card so i'm guessing the problem file it stored on the phones memory.
Is there no way to delete files from the manage applications part on the phone?
Well I think you should give it a go.backup your photos and music and then re Copy them. Even if it does take up to an hour it maybe better than living with the annoyances
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
Do you use apps2sd using the ext partition. Not wiping that would be a problem when flashing most new roms

i re formatted my SD card and flashed a new rom and all seems to be ok now. took me a while but it seems to have paid off. Thank you so much for your help.

[Q] Vibrant With 0.00B Available to Applications? Bricked?

Hi everyone,
In my overzealous attempts to reformat an old 4gb external SD card through CW Recovery, I managed to reformat my internal SD card (I was using the Clockwork Recovery version 2.5). I thought that "format sd card" would reformat my external memory card and not leave me without a usable phone, but I guess I misunderstood.
I spent at least five hours going through all of the ODIN tutorials and trying them out, and found that using Eugene's 2.2 with 2E recovery ROM actually allows me to boot up (hooray! ), while the stock rom from this thread simply forces a bootloop on my poor phone, with occasional freezes. Even using AIO's "Flash to Stock" from Eugene's 2.2 doesn't work.
Further searching has lead to the thread about partitioning using parted, which has been hard for me to use effectively (I made a new partition, but I couldn't get it to mount properly).
I was really excited to come across this tutorial, but it didn't solve my problem. After getting through all of the steps, at step 5, ODIN3 versions 1.0, 1.7, and 1.81 (I tried all 3 on 3 different walk-throughs of the tutorial) never were actually capable of repartitioning the sdcard properly. Every time after the first time of using "parted" to reduce the card to a single partition, I found that that lone partition was always the only one there (15.5 gb /SYSTEM Fat32). No changes had been made to the sd card's partitions.
I don't know if it helps any, but the ROM I was running before I reformatted the card was Bi-Winning 3.0, and Voodoo had not been disabled at the time of the reformat, which may be why I can't flash new ROMs through the recovery as well.
As near as I can tell, ODIN can't actually return my vibrant's partitions to factory settings, so is there a way for me to do that manually? I think that would solve my problem.
Thanks,
-NewbieCube
My guide (you linked to) clearly states its not for this intent... if you read it, you would also see I linked to Eugenes froyo that does not brick. If you did it, THEN you did my guide ODIN to JFD, you are on a fully functional stock 2.1 JFD build.
If your intent was to just format the external sd, go to menu settings, sd card/phone storage, unmount the external and format it.
Right, I know that. In fact I read all through your thread and tried to flash to Eugene's first, and then to JFD, but JFD does not boot properly. It just gives me a black, unresponsive screen. I'll definitely go back through once more and try that again, though, as you clearly know what you're talking about.
I basically formatted the wrong storage (internal sd vs external sd), and would like to get that internal back to stock, so you are right that Eugenes -> JFD should work. I'll report back with results.
^ yeah, exactly... that should work with no issues. let me know if it does not.
Oddly enough, that didn't work for me either. Since my phone still can boot into Eugene's (albeit with 0.00B available to apps), I know this should work, just from reading through your guide. So once more, here's what I did:
1. Download mode -> ODIN 1.70: Flash Eugene_2E_JK2_Froyo.tar.md5, and s1_odin_20100512.pit (from Eugene) Re-Partition NOT checked (Eugene's thread says not to)
2. Boot up into Unbrickable Froyo, with no application space remaining Mount sdcard and move Update.zip (s15274n's) into the root folder without issue.
3. Download mode -> ODIN 1.70: Flash s1_odin_20100512.pit, and T959UVJFD.tar (s15274n's) with Re-Partition checked
4. Boots once automatically into recovery, saying something about a failed MBR checksum and failure to clear userdata
5. Bootloops that never get past the VIBRANT logo screen
6. Boot into recovery and try deleting user data and cache data manually and to reinstall packages, but bootloops continue.
I really don't know what I'm doing wrong here...
UPDATE:
I even used Heimdall on another computer and got the same result, so it isn't ODIN. Why is reformatting the internal SD card to stock so difficult to do?

[Q] (Q) Weird issue with galaxy s internal sd memory

I had problems with my galaxy S, which was running on official 2.3.6
I decided to wipe everything clean and install a custom rom
But during the process, I've come across a weird weird problem
I started to get UIDs system error and was asking me to wipe data partition to use the phone
so I tried to wipe all the partitions
I have tried wiping int sd card via phone -> didn't work
I have tried wiping via cwm -> didn't work
I have tried wiping & re-partition via odin + reinstall -> didn't work
I have physically deleted contents from int sd while connected via USB -> didn't work
I have formatted the removable disk (int sd) while connected via USB -> didn't work
what I mean by didn't work is, the next time I reboot, I find that all the contents in my phone comes back alive...
I don't know what I can do to fix this problem
I can install new mods fine, but due to the fact that old system files and apps are present together, which didn't get wiped, and causes clashes and my phone won't work as it starts up... I really don't know how I can fix this problem and wipe my phone clean to "resurrect" it..
please help me if you know solution to this problem
This really sounds weired.....
You should download sd maid for root users (search for the paid version)
There you have many options for finding odd data on your sdcard and internal phone storage
you can delete files
sd maid makes you find some dead apps wich make your problems
give me a feedback if it works..or not
stay well

hey thanks for the suggestion, but at the moment, I can't use the phone at all because all my basics apps and system apps clashes on boot up, no matter what I flash on to my phone, hence basically it won't start up.. so I can't use any apps infact the phone itself
Only thing I can do is via CWM recovery mode, or via odin
If you know how to deal with this problem via that way, it will be great~

[Q] Phone doesn't recognise internal memory ?

I tried to install revolt jb rom , did the wipes but it didn't install properly
The screen buttons wouldn't work, so I went into recovery and totried install my back up off my internal memory but it wouldn't find it ? Lucky I had wanam rom on the Sd card I istalled that.,
when I've checked it looks like all my files are there on the internal memory but it won't recognize then, this is the same in recovery. Any ideas how to access my internal memory again?
I've tried searching but am away from my computer so it's not easy.
Very difficult to understand your post .
kemeys ???
You say
Off my internal memory but it wouldn't find it ?>>>>
You say
did the wipes
Logic says you wiped the backup or part of it .
Root with the exact same recovery you used .
jje
All the file are still on my phone , it just won't find them, I managed to locate then with root browser lite , but recovery can't find them.
Typing this on my phone, so you'll have to excuse the typos.

update
I've just plugged my phone into the computer, it looks like all my files are still on the internal memory card, but they've been put into a folder lablled 0, just got to figure out how to access that folder on the phone or better still on the recovery. No problem find it on the phone now, just can't access it from recovery.
If i can get into the folder in recovery I should be able to restore my back up, I tried to copy and paste the back up into the clockworkmod backup folder, it copied, but failed the MD5 test when trying to restore.
Update: copied the cwm back up to the external sd card and it worked, so I'm back where I started from, just got to sort out my files and delete any duplicates.

[Q] RemICS install in Galaxy i9000 halts

First off, I am no expert so please be gentle! I previously rooted my old Samsung Galaxy S i9000 and installed ICS, which went OK, but the phone became quite slow and unstable. I was advised to install RemICS and downloaded all the zip files from this forum, and put them on the external SD card. I followed the developer's instructions to the letter, as well as reading everything I could find on the subject. The reset and data wiping went fine, but the installation of the ROM didn't. It halted with an error message -`ROM incompatible, trying to use an invalid partition'. I repeat that this is supposed to be the specific ROM for the i9000. The phone now won't boot into recovery. It stops with an orange Android logo and the text `Powered by Mackay Kernel'. It won't boot into download mode either. The Mackay screen stays there however long I leave it. I really need help from the ROM developer but I can't post to that forum. How can I either boot into recovery or into download mode? Is this ROM reliable? What could I have done wrong?
More info:
Presumably everyone is on holiday! But just in case anyone is reading, there is further news. The reason I could not start recovery mode was that the button sequence was different from what I had been told. It now boots reliably into Mackay (which of course is TWRP). I have found that the phone is unable to mount the partitions DATA and SYSTEM - they seem to be corrupted. Hence it has not wiped DATA, although TWRP wrongly reports success. I have tried updating the partitions to ext3 or ext4 but this fails every time. I could format the thing from Windows but that will wipe everything including recovery of course. I need a tool to repair these partitions, but have not found anything so far. This may well have been the reason the phone was getting creaky in the first place.
I have copied a new ROM to the external SD card, using a card reader, and inserted this into the phone. Strangely the TWRP file manager reports that EXTERNAL SD is a sub-folder of SD CARD, and that is empty. The file manager does not show the real external SD card. But the real external SD shows up on the Windows USB connection. What is going on?
When I try to mount the partitions, DATA and SYSTEM can't be checked - the other partitions (Cache, sdcard, and emmc are all checked).

Well for the benefit of anyone else with the same problem, I have managed to re-flash the ROM back to stock. It just took 3 days of intensive web browsing until I understood how to do it, and found software that worked - a lot of stuff out there has errors.
To summarise, the problem was:
1. Data and System partitions became damaged, so phone became unstable.
2. Attempt to upgrade ROM failed because of damaged partitions.
3. Could not boot phone into recovery or download because button combination was different from what I was told.
The solution was:
4. Boot into download mode using correct button combination.
5. Re-flash back to stock ROM and re-partition using Odin.
Yes, someone did tell me that, and I would have done that straight away if I could have gotten into download mode. We live and learn

4. Boot into download mode using correct button combination.
