Best Movie/Music device? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is the archos gen 8 the best for AV quality in android devices? i've tried the evo 4g, moto droid, g tablet, and nook color and so far the archos 101 and 70 have the best audio out and video playback. i'm able to get louder sounds with no clipping. this using both the built in players of each device and using power amp with the same eq presets. and for different file types - i've only used rockplayer - the gen 8's native program have the least amount of problems. rockplayer stuttered on the nook color with 48khz audio encoded mp4's and the nook's native won't even handle that audio at all. the others did better but rockplayer isn't as refined as the archos' player.
are there any devices better than the archos for video and music playback? how does the galaxy tab compare?
i haven't used hdmi out - i don't own a hd tv as i don't really watch tv and my 24" dell has no hdmi.

Motorola Webtop and codecs

I recently bought a HD Multimedia Dock in hope to see movies on my phone connected to the tv instead of my computer. Well, of course it wouldn't work so great as I thought it would. Most of the movies and series can't be processed.. well the Movie Player app which came with the Atrix can't handle it either. MoboPlayer have been working, after I've "Soft Decoded" the file. Is there any codecs they will provide us with later? Because this wasn't what I was looking forward to. Also its not totally fullscreen, all the menus are visible around the screen when I'm using MoboPlayer.
I recently push several videos on 720p and 1080p
First I can't play with original player
soo, I installed mobo player, vitaplayer and MX VideoPlayer
All players work....but omg...why?! 15fps?!
really 720p in 15fps?! I don't try the 1080p because obvious always need more processor for decoding
soo, it is caused by software or hardware?!

MKV playback issues

Hey guys, just got a few 720p high profile mkv files which reviews claimed could be played with the stock video player. All 3 files currently do not. Dice player works in trial but when i try to buy it gives me not found in the market. I'd rather usethe built in player personally but has anyone else had any luck either way?
EDIT solved with bs player
Try moboplayer its free.

or MXPlayer I have used that on many MKVs

I use the exact same
mx player works well but there's no hardware decoding available in any of them. Very disappointed ( though I know the hardware is capable of it). I know anandtech? Or one of the reviews did a blu ray rip and it played great so I'm guessing I'm missing something, an update broke it or if will be fixed in ics. Is also possible they just need hardware drivers for tegra3. I'm optimistic, is launch week, well have awesome devs, it'll get sorted eventually. Even software decode stutters just a bit ( I'm a video perfectionist). Also peeved at xda app FCs but again, brand new device. Just let me know if anyone (particularly those who didn't update) has any better luck.
Unbelievable , this still not resolved after the Tegra 2 debacle.
i've played a couple mkv's just fine with the stock player and mx player. the only issue i've had with them is if i skip around, the video never picks back up, works fine in software though.
but if i just watch the movie through without skipping around, it plays perfectly.
as you can see here ICS has added support to the Matroska format, so hopefully the default player will be handling it smoothly in ICS.

That's good to know. Was thinking of cancelling my preorder once I heard people having problems with mkv's & diceplayer being unavailable

How were these files encoded? Because in order to take advantage of hardware decoding a file has to meet a certain standard. If it deviates even a tiny bit, it will not work.
Go and Download BSPlayer lite from the market. It has the same funtionality like Diceplayer. Tegra 3 can nearly play all 1080p vids.

Well its h264 high profile, which tegra 3 plays. Tegra 3 isn't picky, as long as its less than a 42mbps bitrate the hardware will handle it. The only standard it must meet is 1080p and less and 42mbps or less in h264 anyways. For tegra 3, i'm sure software is the issue.
Files came from my media server which are also hw accelerated with an nvidia graphics card via vdpau. never even have to check, just always plays (h264 anyways)
Again, i'm sure they'll fix it eventually,I know the chip does it, still annoying., its why I never bought tegra 2. And for those suggesting software decode, battery life PLUMMETS and the performance we would have with hw decode would be as good or better than blu ray with no stutter.

Prime will handle highprofile mkv just fine if you use a other media player like mxplayer, diceplayer The problem when you can't play with the stock player is that it for the most times can't handle the audio.
Just give them some time to update there players to full Tegra3 support. The device have only been out some days and I think the developers also would like to have a device to test on.
I have posted this in a other thread, but I will repost it here to. From swedroid.se test, and translated into English.

@OP
Have you tried a straight MP4 (H264/AAC) with standard Android player? You do realize that it's not just the video track that kicks the (3rd-party) player into HW or SW mode, right? Subtitles, for instance, will invoke SW mode. Chapter tracks will also probably cause SW.
As much as you sound you know, then you should also know that not every downloaded video is the same. If you have problems, SOP is first to provide specs (MediaInfo works), second is to provide a sample, third is to specify environment (which player you've tried, and their respective performance). Only noobs go "my vids don't work, now what?"
With the non-info you've provided, all you get is guesswork.
What do you mean by " files came from a media server"? If you are streaming to the device, expect skipping playback because WiFi can't handle hi-bitrate 1080p.
I have no issues running 720p or 1080p hi profile (locally) on my Transformer Prime in Dice player, even with DTS and multiple audio tracks.
people need to realise 3rd party players need to be optimised for tegra 3 for hardware acceleration. its not to do with type of file, as long as it does not have very high bitrate.
Everyone has to understand, that MKV is just a container. You can put almost anything into this container so therefore it is unlikely that the hardware can decode everything that can go into a MKV container.
The main thing about the Kal-El SoC, it is the first chip that can decode h.264 High Profile video. To see the supported codecs that Tegra 3 can decode in hardware see: http://www.nvidia.com/object/tegra-superchip.html
I've ripped hundreds of blu-rays. I've ended up using two sets of files.
Archive for playback on Samsung LED TV's and other high end DLNA devices:
Container: MKV
Video: H.264 High Profile 4.0 Constant Quality 18-20 1080p
Audio: AAC-LC 384 5.1 channel
Subtitles: sub format
Software: HD Decrypter, RipBot264 and Handbrake
Mobile Devices:
Container: m4v
Video: H.264 Base 3.0 Profile, 2-pass (1000kbps widescreen and 1200kbps for 16x9) qHD size (960x540),
Audio: AAC-LC 128 2 channel
Subtitles: Converted from the MKV
Software: Handbrake
I spend most of the time make the archive format looking as good as possible for it's size. Most files come out to 4-7GB per movie. There are exceptions depending on the quality of the movie. Movies with lots of noise in them come out to be much larger then one that is very clean. Computer Generated movies will come out to 3-4GB using CQ 18. The Prime should decode these just fine.
The mobile size I use for under powered devices and also to have as many movies as possible for it's size. qHD actually ends up looking very nice for it's size when down converted from blu-ray. A two hour movie comes out to be about 1GB. This way I can have on average 60-70 movies on 64B microsdxc card and about the same on the 64GB prime itself.
sorry, but I felt I provided all necessary info. The files are stored locally, mkv h264 high profile 20mbps streams with ac3 5.1 audio. They also have subtitles, though I don't need them.tpb was the source of all 3.
In any event, bs player works with hardware acceleration perfectly and I'm very happy. It also shows the hardware is fully capable of it, software will soon follow (ics)

According to the Tegra 3 specs, AC3 is not supported in hardware.

Anyone able to play 1920 x1080 video?

I have tried playing the 1920x1080 with different players; the preinstalled video player, Real Player, and Soul Player -but no success. I have HC 3.1 as the 3.2 is not yet available for my region. Thanks in advance!

I could play this res using DicePlayer and BSPlayer but both lag and out of audio/video sync!
I've been experimenting with this a lot, lately, and playing HD video remains a problem. While I haven't tried 1080p, 720p is already horrible. With every player I've tried (MX, Dice, Mobo, VPlayer, QQ, mVideo and probably more) there's some form of lag, and some don't even seem to have the capacity to start an HD video. So far, the player best capable of playing HD video seems to be DicePlayer, as suggested above. Also MX Video Player can manage some HD videos, with a proper setup.
If anyone else has suggestions for playing HD video, please tell them. I'm very interested to see if I missed any good players.
If you're looking to be able to play your average HD rip found on the internet you'll be sorely disappointed. If you encode your own though, it's easy to get good quality playback.
My best advice for good 720p video playback is to encode your own files with Handbrake using high profile with B-Frames turned off, CABAC entropy off, 8x8 transform off and weighted p-frames off. Set your max width to 1280 and let the height be whatever it needs to be depending on the source aspect ratio. I use either CQ of 22 or so or I'll go with a 2-pass encode using average bitrate in the 3-4k range. Resulting files play great in Dice Player with full hardware acceleration.
For those looking to play their already encoded 1080p material off of their LAN I don't know what to say; the device won't do it . . it's a limitation on tegra 2 that has specific codec settings supported and not all. Other than re-encoding all of your stuff the only other alternative for LAN playback would be to run a Plex media server on your LAN which is what I do at home. Quality wont be great but it will be watchable and at least you'll have access to your media.

How to play 720P High Profile videos?

Hello,
I know there seems to be some sort of issue with Tegra 2 chipsets not decoding video properly but I read that with the right codec and video players you can play 720p high profile MKVs/MP4s, how can I do that?
Also, does it matter what ROM I'm on? Like CM7 vs Stock MotoBlur? I'm on CM7 and I tried a few video apps and most face some sort of problem with 720p videos stuttering and whatnot.
Thanks.

That's one of the most important issue of the Atrix.
I can't play most of my HD anime videos fluently on my Atrix because the hardware doesn't support high quality HD mkv videos.
But I've heard the Samsung S2 does.... -.-
And that makes me angry!
Anyway if you not afraid of trying HD videos on your Atrix, you should try 'MX video player' and 'V player' (both need separate codecs).
Both are great but 'V player' is the only player which can show subtitles from mkv videos which I stream with my w-lan router from my external hard drive.
Motorola Atrix 4G AT&T unlocked
If you haven't yet, try MX Video player. It uses some software trickery and plays most if not all of my hd videos beside being the best video player in many aspects. I tested on the phone only so don't know what the output to an external monitor would be.
Don't forget to install the right codec and always toggle 'software fast mode' on the screen if videos get stuck. It also gives you the ability to zoom into the picture.
Regards
Edit: Blizzard22 - I much prefer MX to VPlayer. Especially as the former seems more optimized for tegra...
Not sure if it has problems with subtitles in certain containers... until now subtitles worked for me and their rendering is very pleasing.

I have both player and I personally prefer MX video player but the subtitles are missing if you stream your videos with mx.
V player can show the subtitles and that's why I prefer V player.
But for normal use I definitely prefer mx before visiting player.

I think this is a problem of the Tegra, High Profile videos not work with HW decoding, I have tryed MX player, but, all the times it loses sync or drop frames.
the temp solution for me is recode videos to Baseline profile in 720p
VLC is coming for android, maybe that will be the golden egg.

if they use HW decoding, but will be stuck on Baseline Profile again
The two players I have the most luck with are Dice and Mobo. Try them out.

mpeg2 1080i playback kills battery fast?

I have a Asus tf700. It has a 1080p rez. like this Z. I bought it used from amazon for $300 but I'm returning it because video skips and It only gets 2 hr.s of battery life after viewing my mpeg2 1080i video. All my shows are mpeg2 since thats the way come off my Tivo. When I look at battery use in settings I see about %70 is my mxvido player. I'ts the only player I know that will play my mpeg2 shows. The next big usage is screen at about %20. This is with outdoor viewing so screen was bright. Can anyone tell me how many hours of mpeg2 1080i video playback you get? Id like to consider this sony if it can do better. Or wait for the The new Asus Memo Pad FHD 10 inch 1080p tablet. I dont game.
Already tried other video players like BS Player, Dice Player, MX Player, Archos Video??
It's very dependent on the decoder (and the kind of hardware acceleration) how battery-consuming and CPU-/GPU-intensive playing movies is.
I admit that I often are quite unnerved by people who rate devices by the pre-installed software. It's normal that the pre-installed apps don't cut it and that only with 3rd party apps a device can shine.

Dice player refuses to play. BS, like MX player will both work but only with software decoding and framerate is choppy and both kill my battery in 2 hrs. I installed Arcos player but says it needs $5 dollars for mpeg2 codec to playback the ac3 audio on my mpeg2. Does the sony z tablet's naive player playback 1080i mpeg2 videos? How many hrs. does it get? Does it use hardaware acceleration as no players seem to achieve this using my asus tf 700
No, you can download "Archos Video All Codecs" plugin for free in the play store, then the Archos player can play all formats!
Nor MPEG2 nor AC3 can be decoded in hardware by Snapdragons. You're out of luck here. On a modern format (H264 with AAC audio) you'd get much improved video playback times, smoothness, quality and compression.
