[Q] Adobe Digital Editions - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone had any luck viewing books in the Adobe Digital Edition format on the tablet? I've found two apps --- txtr and Overdrive --- that are supposed to work with Android but have not been able to open a book to read.
If you've been able to read books in ADE, please let me know what app you used and what steps you took to accomplish it.
Thanks!

The owner of Overdrive is a personal friend of mine... but to your question, I have downloaded their latest android apk (2.0) and downloaded a book from my local library through overdrive and it opens fine. I think it is an epub, but I am not sure which file type it is. I have not tried any of the audio books yet. I did have trouble with DRM files on my modded winmo 6.5 phone. They did not work. I will try an audio book later and report back to you.

I think that it is DRM books that I am having trouble with. I really want to be able to download epub books from my library and read them on the Gtab. I've read that some people have been able to do this using the latest version of Overdrive but I haven't been able to do it. I keep getting an error message that the file can't be read or that the file format isn't compatible. I've set up my Adobe ID and its been authenticated but I keep getting the errors.
EDIT: I should probably say that I am using Vegan beta 3 in case someone has this working on a different ROM.

I also keep getting error messages with ADE but was able to download book from my library onto Overdrive and opened fine on G-Tab

Sorry, forgot to mention, I am using tnt lite 2.00 I am a h old out!

What ROM are you using? Do you know if the book was in the ADE format?

The book has an ".epub" file extension. I am on tnt lite 2.00

I can confirm that the MP3 format of Overdrive audio book downloads from the library play fine. WMA audio format books are not compatible with Overdrive (not sure if they play on Android, but OMC says they are not compatible with Android.

it's like I am taking crazy pills!!!
First time post, sorry if it sucks.
I am a student and have managed to purchase all my textbook in some format that I can use on my G Tab running vegan beta 4 except one book that is a ADE PDF. I have tried txtr, overdrive, you name it (aldiko v1.5, google books, amazon) and I am going crazy.
The adobe thread is which has helpful info but no cigar forums.adobe.com/thread/485791
Class starts in a week and unless I get invited for the Aldiko 2.0 Beta (which does support ADE PDF) test I am stuck using the ADE Desktop application which is terrible for reading. Any help is appreciated.

I just sent an email to the president of Overdrive who is a personal friend of mine and posed your problem to him. Perhaps he might know of a solution. I will let you know if I hear back from him.

Thank you I appreciate it.

ADE works fine on my gtabs. My wife's is running stock 3389 with gapps and market, mine is running Tnt lite 3.1 with 3.1.3 supplement pack. No errors with Overdrive or ADE, have downloaded epubs from my library and reading just fine.

Aldiko 2.0 is on the market now. Only the premium version has been updated: http://www.appbrain.com/app/aldiko-book-reader/com.aldiko.android
I don't have any Adobe DRM books so I can't test it sorry.

i am running aldiko 2.0 and can confirm that .PDF books work fine for me! dont have any DRM books, but there is an option in the settings for Adobe DRM making it so you can login with your adobe ID and password to "open content protected with Adobe DRM".... so i would give that a try!

Thanks for the tip I downloaded aldiko 2.0 and can confirm ADE PDF'S work. Its not the best user experience but at least I can read my textbook.
Thanks for everyone's help.

Downloading now. I'll give it a try and report back we might need to make a guide on how to maximize the reading experience on your G-Tab for different type of formats and readers.
**UPDATE**
Doing more research specifically on Calibre I found one major roadblock on the FAQ section of the Calibre website.
"Most purchased EPUB books have DRM. This prevents calibre from opening them. You can still use calibre to store and transfer them to your e-book reader. First, you must authorize your reader on a windows machine with Adobe Digital Editions. Once this is done, EPUB books transferred with calibre will work fine on your reader. When you purchase an epub book from a website, you will get an ”.acsm” file. This file should be opened with Adobe Digital Editions, which will then download the actual ”.epub” e-book. The e-book file will be stored in the folder “My Digital Editions”, from where you can add it to calibre."
Another little bit on books with DRM.
"ny e-book with DRM cannot be converted to a different format. This is because conversion itself would require the removal of the DRM. Not all e-book formats support DRM and different e-book formats support different sets of privileges granted by the DRM. There is no way to move the DRM with the content when converting; thus DRM prevents conversion."

ADE Problem
I am trying to set up my tab to get books from NY public library but having several problems. First, no programs are letting me input my Adobe info. Overdrive and Aldiko keep giving me some kind of error about the server. Also, NYPL website keeps telling me I need to register a mini-reader account (or whatever the program is that would be used for a blackberry)
Have any of you run into this problem or have any suggestions? It seems like some of you got t to work...
Thanks in advance

The reason overdrive and aldiko weren't properly accepting my ADE ID and password was that the time on the G-tablet was incorrect. Once I reset the time (which keeps changing to be incorrect) it worked fine on both programs.
a) I will update when I have actually made sure that I can get books from the library, and
b) anyone know of a thread (or have an answer) for the reason why the clock won't automatically update itself when connected to the internet, or why it keeps changing to the wrong time?
Thanks!

Failed to authorize device
I have Adilko premium as well a txtr ereaders. In both, when attempting to sign in to adobe I get the error "failed to authorize device". The user id and password are correct (verified with multiple attempts) and there isn't a problem when using them with my g2 phone. The gtablet is running 4.2.4 with clemsyn kernel.

i am wondering: how power user can name pdf reading useful on qvga lol.
I Agree 100% with drlebey.
I have tried many ebook readers and I always come back to mobipocket. It is BY FAR the best one I have come across.
Very nice! But actually I use FoxitReader and also works great. Doesn't have the sync capability tho.
How does it compare to uBook? New versions of uBook are not free but I think the old one worked pretty well.

As the original author stated..maybe you should TRY it before you complain about it....I keep an assortment of books on my storage card and mobireader does a great job of making them readable...keeps your spot so when you reopen it, you are right back where you started and up/down on the dpad to navigate.

When you import the pdf it fits everything to screen. You can adjust the font size and it also brings in the pics, link etc. Plus, and this is a big plus, it autoscrolls the screen and you can adjust the scroll speed.
The Alreader program looks interesting, but is there an english version? If so, could you post a direct link to the site?
Reading PDF on QVGA is always pain in the a$$ due to the screen and PDF file format limitations. I use freeware Haali Reader that has these main features:
- Loads plain text and XML files.
- Cyrillic encodings support with autodetection.
- Last viewed position in file is saved on exit.
- ClearType support.
- Any font/size can be selected.
- Fullscreen and landscape mode.
- Colors can be adjusted.
- Text search.
- Dictionary support. Tapping a word opens a translation window.
- Automatic hyphenation (russian language only).
- Table of contents and bookmarks
- Multiple columns support (1-4)
- PRC/PDB files support (plain text and XML only, HTML is not supported).
- Builtin ZIP archives support.
- Autoscroll (controlled from keyboard/buttons only, settings are in Options->Buttons).
why would that be spamming??
It doesn't read PDF files
Haali Reader is a very fast program with lots of options. It looks to be more promising the next version or 2 later. I say this because of the errors I encountered. It doesn't support as many file formats as Mobipocket and I did not like the desktop version very much. I will give it a chance on the mobile device and use it here and there to see if it grows on me.

You can import many formats with the desktop program including PDFs and send them to your device. They read much better than acrobat reader does on the mobile device.

Will try that! I think as far as integration goes (desktop & PPC) the mobireader is leader. I found something about english and AlReader here. It seems to be a very nice reader too.
thank you
thank you!
This looks interesting, thanks for the information. I'll check it later.
uBook 0.8o - last free
uBook 0.8o - the last (?) free version
I like this application for:
It reads from ZIP archives
It reads HTML
I hate this application for:
It doesn't have capability to manage files
It doesn't show png pictures
It doesn't have touch scrolling / It's not thumb friendly
New versions are not free - the last one but the most important
Bets regards

I don't like this e-reader because I don't know how to use it.
I don't know how to display e-books from my location.
There is only option to open e-book, but I must go to my directory every time.
There is no possibility to change location of library.
There is only option to show one of 3 known extensions or all files (also unknown formats for reader).
Best regards
IGIdeus
P.S. Is there any manual?
I think (I may be wrong) the spam reference was about mobipocket.com (I always get their crap in my inbox), NOT the originator of this thread.

I think they thought the original poster was spamming for mobipocket because he presented his post in a very professional manor with pics and a list of features...and he had a low post count.
I appreciate the fact he took the time to do so and since the program is free see no incentive for anyone to "spam" it.

[APP][WM6] alpha v2 - Tube8 viewer --- uses XBMC plugins with PythonCE!

WARNING! THIS IS STILL IN ALPHA STAGES... (v0.2.1a)
And that's because I don't mean it to be a Tube8/porn viewer. It's going to be a video viewer for all types of websites. So until I get to that stage, alpha!
However, it's fully-functioning in the sense that you should be able to get to any movie on Tube8. There are some bugs... I'll list the ones I know below. You MUST follow the steps below to get this working.
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
(wow, took a while before I found a kind-of-work-safe image... but you saw Tube8 in the header, you should know better)
STEP 1
This uses PYTHON! You must have PythonCE installed for this to work. I'll explain why in a second, but the link for pythonCE is here..
Get PythonCE
STEP 2
Install the CAB file below. (I'm crossing my fingers that it works ok.)
STEP 3
Copy the THREE .pyw files in the attached zip file to the /Program Files/Python25/Lib folder. (Unzip them!) These are crucial! (Some unzip programs will capitalize the file names. CHANGE THEM BACK to all lowercase if this happens. Python is case-sensitive and it's looking for these files with lower-case names.)
STEP 4
Have a video player set to open M3U files by default. I KNOW this works with CorePlayer. I'm not certain it works with TCPMP (maybe mine sucks ) For CorePlayer, it's not enough to just install it. You need to go into Tools->Settings... then select the page for Associations and check M3U.
One thing you WILL notice is that not all videos will play in CorePlayer. I can't figure out the reason, but some of the videos are encoded in VP6 (FLV4) and Coreplayer can't read them. However, a good two thirds of the videos do work... just keep trying.
OK, maybe you noticed that these python files are named XBMC. Well, my intention is to get most (or all) of the plugins that work for XBMC to work for my app which I think I'm going to name 2Kinetic - Mobile Video Viewer. So far, it should work with the Tube8 plugin. I did not write this plugin, and I would not normally package it with this app, but I'm still in testing mode so... hopefully I haven't stepped on anyone's toes.
You'll notice that PythonCE is a little slow... well, it is not super fast, but I think you'll be able to live with it if we can get everything else that XBMC does working on Windows Mobile. Besides, if PythonCE turns out to be incredibly useful on the WM platform, maybe someone will take it up again and put out a better (newer version).
Known bugs:
-Back button doesn't do what it should always
-If net connection is down, the program will crash
-Images don't show up on the initial screen unless you scroll down, then back up... or you wait until it finishes loading.
-Many more i'm sure...
To Do:
-Write a new class for displaying images and text... i'm currently using listview (small icons). This will let me display more data (vid length) and fix the image loading behavior.
-Speed everything up
-See if TCPMP will open HTTP addresses as streams from an *.M3U file (how 2Kinetic currently works)
-Make a nicer search page (the default one is ugly and not convenient at all)
Future:
-Get more plugins from XBMC to work
-Get a better overall video player to work flawlessly (maybe TCPMP)
-Get RTMP support worked into the program (on the way )
Good idea, thanks.
I've seen your post on WVD's thread. Maybe you're app could enable to the user to fix some html or others to make the app reworking when video-websites have changed. No?
I hope your app will be a "better and working" wvd soon.

I've got some ideas for that... like using an XML file containing regex expressions that will auto-update via web (or by hand). I really wanted to mimic how XBMC does it, but XBMC uses python and pythonCE is not perfect yet. I'm still thinking about it.

Ok, good idea. Do you think that in future your app may enable some "plugins" ? For exemple a dev' create a plugin (xml file) for a website like youtube, we put it in a folder, and it works. It's a good idea, to my mind.

In english please.
How does it crash? Do you have an error message/log?
Just so everyone knows... it will crash if there's no internet connection. It will also crash if tube8.com is unreachable. There is absolutely no error-handling in the program at all. There is no log file either.
I was hoping that someone would say, "Yes it works for me on GPRS."
I'll keep working on it anyways.
If you are having trouble saying what you want to say inEnglish, french is ok since I can understand you, but we all prefer english normally so that everyone can understand
BTW - YOU MUST HAVE NET CF 3.5 INSTALLED FOR IT TO WORK. I think most new roms come with it, so this shouldn't be a big issue, but just in case.
It worked great for me,I have the Sprint Touch Pro2 using stock ROM,no problem at all, thanks for your great work.

DIAM500
Telus
It crashes for me, I believe its because its trying to save the file to "storage card" but as you may or may not no the DIAM500 only has internal memory no SD slot. Other wise it loaded fine and showed all the previews.
I've forgotten to say it, but it works for me too.
I use an acer tempo x960, with wifi.
For me it crashes when I press flv... If this app tries to save to the storage card that may be the issue in my case (maybe it's a regional or unicode issue... since in my localization the storage card folder is named "Cartão de memória".
PS: If you're going to add more sites I leave the same suggestion as I did for WVD: make your app scriptable in a similar way to PSP Tube (and its mods... here and here are some scripts that may help making the addition of some sites faster). In the long run this would require less (official) updates.

Yeah, it's hardcoded to go to "/storage card/" so it will crash if it's in another language or not there. Well, this was just a test to make sure those sites aren't doing anything other than checking the HTTP Headers for mobile devices.
As for scripting... I did not know that PSP Tube existed. I'll look into those... I was definitely going for a scripted version that others can contribute to since I don't want to be the one to fix it each time a site changes their format.
I'm still working on it...
And thanks for all the responses so far.

Good luck, i can't wait to test new version.
Good to know. Will keep an eye on development.
hey buddy, nice to see this.
i'm working on a similar app for android and started with tube8 too, cause it has easy accecable videos. Maybe we can share information how to extract the video infos.
I try to make my app pluginbased so that it is easy in the future to add new sites. I'm a android beginner (without my own device) so it takes some time.. but tube 8 works quit good at the moment.
P.S.: For android devices its important that the site has mp4 support so the sitesupport is very limited on android at the moment.
sxe: PM'd you...
Failed on GPRS when I clicked FLV...
WebException - Could not establish connection to network
I think I have everything working except for the Search function and the back button...
But the behavior so far:
1. You're presented with a series of menus
2. If you select Categories, it will show you a series of categories.
3. Otherwise, it will show you a list of videos with name and thumbnail.
4. Doubletap the video and it will open CorePlayer automatically and stream it. I had no slowdowns at all like I used to get with WVD and TCPMP (although I think that was TCPMP's fault and not WVD).
Ok, now all I have to do is fix the Search and Back buttons... then learn how to package this whole thing into a CAB file and I'll upload it for testing
Edit: Oh, and I need to put in a lot of error handling so that you guys can tell me what it says when there's an error

Calibre - A free and open source e-book library management application

Last night I learned about Calibre and I am amazed. It is basically iTunes but for ebooks. I have a large collection of ebooks that were in mobi format. When first opening up Calibre it asks what kind of device you would like it setup for. Obviously I chose the B&N NookColor option. After Calibre added my collection to my library, I then connected my nook. Highlighted all the books and then right clicked > Send to device. You get the option of sending it to internal storage or the SD card. It then asks if you would like to convert all the books to a compatible format for the device. I left it syncing over night, woke up and only 2 of 568 books did not convert properly. Now on my NC I have a huge library of books to choose from. The "Books" section within your "Library" does take some time to load though so I took some time and added the more prevalent books I want to read to "My Shelves" and now I have a good amount of quickly accessible reading material.

YEAH!!!!!! I hate iTunes.
I also hate it when people describe my espresso catering business as "it's like Starbucks, but better".
Cheers,

Been using Calibre since I got my NC, and love it. I just wish it (or the NC) handled cover art a lot better. Calibre seems to create a jpg file in the same directory as the ebook for the cover, instead of using the on on page 1 of the ebook, most of the time. I get a lot of blank covers that do have cover art on page 1 on my NC.
I've tried to find solutions (save "epub as epub", and convert in Sigil -then in Calibre), but none have been successful.
Good call letting people know about Calibre though. It is very good.

I solved that problem by rooting and using another reader, specifically Aldiko, which IMHO is a much better app than the stock Nook reader.
Nice share, never heard of this before. Thanks!!!
Calibre is great not only for organizing my ebooks but also to convert them to ePub. I had a ton of PDFs and calibre converted them to ePub in under an hour. It also makes it easy to organize books by author on the nook because it automatically formats to (Last, First name).
I'd heard of Calibre before. Never thought to use it though as I've never really had a use for it til now.
Is this strictly PC side, or is there a reader/library app on the market as well?
If not, what reader/library app should I be using? I dont like the BN stock software at all, (clunky and slow mostly) so I want to avoid using it.
Can I use Calibre to resize my comics for my new NC but NOT change what format there in? I plan on using ACV to actually read them
ACV can fit the image to the screen, ypu don't need to resize them.

So I just drag and drop my comic files, as is into NC? Any suggestions of where to put them?

Been using Calibre since I got my NC, and love it. I just wish it (or the NC) handled cover art a lot better. Calibre seems to create a jpg file in the same directory as the ebook for the cover, instead of using the on on page 1 of the ebook, most of the time. I get a lot of blank covers that do have cover art on page 1 on my NC.
I've tried to find solutions (save "epub as epub", and convert in Sigil -then in Calibre), but none have been successful.
Good call letting people know about Calibre though. It is very good.

Follow leday's post here step by step. It seems a little complicated the first time but it's really very simple and works every single time.
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110001
Actually it's much easier....
Using Calibre to get your covers to show up in your library is actually a very easy thing to do. Man that last post was way way to complicated. 90% of the time the following method works.
Load your book into Calibre.
Right click on the title and choose Edit metadata, then edit metadata individually.
Now the metadata page will open. You will see on the left side of the metadata page a empty box with no ISBN number.
Go to Barnes and Nobles website pull up the book and copy the ISBN number from the site to the ISBN box in Calibre.
Now click the Fetch Metadata.
A new box will open up and Calibre will search the correct metadata.
Normally it will within seconds it will find the title (usually only one will come up).
Make sure the all three text boxes in the bottom left are checked (Overwrite author..., download ..., and download cover art)
Hit ok it will fill in the missing data and download the correct (in 98% of the cases) cover art.
Now simply convert epub to epub.
The cover art should now correctly populate to your Nook Color when you move the modified book to your device.
I believe that the problem with cover art not showing correctly on the Nook Color might in fact be linked to missing or incorrect ISBN numbers. Regardless this whole process is mostly painless and quick so definitely easier then changing file names etc.
Hope that helps people.

I have been using calibre for covers titles and authors. Only question i had is how do you sent the books to your nook in an organized manner? For example when i move books over all the books get moved to the root of my SD card. I would like to have the books go to my files than ebooks folder but there is no option to set that...am i missing something?
I have been using calibre to fetch news feeds from blogs and websites that I read daily. When you choose a source it asks when you would like it downloaded , which I have set at 1 x per day, and then to delete anything older than 1 day.
Everything downloads fine and transfers over but it does not seem to be deleting anything old. Especially from the nook itself. I still have numerous old entries with no apparent way to get rid of them.
Anyone have any experience with this?

When I right click the book in Calibre, I see a choice to send to main memory or send to storage card A.
Edit: Oh, you want to select the folder on the SD card. I see.......... good question.
Cheers,

There is an option in Preferences to choose your folder path when sending to the device.
1. Open Preferences
2. Under Import/Export heading, choose "Sending books to devices"
3. Under "Save Template" enter "My Files/ebooks/" at the beginning. You can also change the folder structure there.
Hope that helps!
Now while I'm at it, does anyone know how to tell Calibre not to send over the JPG covers. The Nook Color doesn't need the cover art as a separate jpg the way the Nook did. Adding a .nomedia to my Books folder suppresses all of the eBooks in Library as well. I've been manually deleting all of the JPGs in my Books folder, but I'd prefer to skip that step if possible.
Hello to the community, first time poster.
Is there a way to use calibre without it moving and organizing the e-books in it's own system. I have my own folder-based classification method and I'd like to keep using it - if that's possible (kinda like the i-tunes method of mp3's organization).
In calibre instead of saving to device you click the arrow next to save to disk and choose save to disk in a single directory. If you nc is hooked up, you can choose any folder on your sd card. I don't mess with how it wants to save the files for its functionality, just make my own save folder...,or you single folder save on your pc hdd and simply drag and drop the files onto your nc.

[Q] E-reader apps

Hi all!
This may have been asked before (actually I'm pretty sure, but combing through the last 5 pages of threads I'm having a hard time finding it), but my question is this: I've got a lot of ebooks in epub format (gotten from.... other places that I won't discuss here lol) that I am wanting to get loaded onto my Galaxy Tab 10.1 (16gb wi-fi only) that I just got last week. I have been looking into several programs that say that they will transfer from my desktop to the tablet (Calibre and Adobe Digital Editions in particular both state that they will work with the Tab). And both say I have to have an ebook reader app on the Tab.
I say all that to ask this: 1.) will both Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre do what they say well (or if someone has a better preference please let me know!) or do I need to look at using a different program to transfer my ebooks; 2.) will the default Google Books app work to read those epub formatted books or do I need to get a different ebook reader app (and which one should I get)?
Sorry for the horribly long post! Just wanted to state my question with the most background info that I could! Thanks a ton guys! You're the best forum in the world!
I use calibre to convert my eboooks to .mobi format to use with the kindle app on my tab. It works great, is open source and it will match the meta data of the cover art to the mobi file so the covet art actually shows up on my tab. A few pdf files i coverted did not turn out so good (spacing errors and such) but other than that i thimk it is a good program.

Ok well what's the difference between .mobi and .epub formats? I haven't really found a good definitive answer to that (even on trusty wikipedia). Is one really better than another?
Honestly I really dont know. I do know that it is the format the kindle app uses and that is what I needed. Sorry I cant be more help with that.
Haha! Thanks for the info though. Really appreciate it!
I've tried several but find that Manotano Reader works best for me. Handles ADE DRMed files no problem. Just copy the files to a folder and Import them into MR.
Not inexpensive but so much of a time saver that I don't mind. I Copy the files to a Dropbox folder on my PC. DL them from the DropBox Folder to eBook folder on My ST. Import and done.

Ok! I'll have to give that one a shot. Depending on the price that is haha! Thanks for the helpful info!
eBook reader is already included
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 already includes an ebook reader. It was a part of the Touchwiz update. It can read the epub and PDF formats. It is compatible with the Adobe DRM if you are borrowing books from your library or buying other copy protected books, so you can give it your Adobe ID username and password, and it should be able to read them.
It is simply named "ebook" in the apps screen.
for transferring the books,
turn off the USB debugging under settings->Applications->Development
plug you tablet into your computer
browse to your tablet under your computer.
find the ebook folder on the tablet, put your ebook files in the ebook import folder
the path from my computer was "Computer\GT-P7510\Tablet\ebook\import"
After the files are copied, open the ebook app,
go to the menu and choose import to let the ebook reader app see the new books.
Barnes and Noble's Nook app supports .epub. Just drop your files into sdcard>Nook>MyDocuments and you're good to go. Not sure about DRM though.
For pdf's, I use ezPDF Reader. It's not free, but it's got some pretty nice features.
I use Aldiko, handles ePub and PDF which are my 2 main formats. I use Samba Filesharing for Android to create a network share, dump the files in and then use Aldiko's import folder feature to get them into it's library.

That's actually a pretty simple seeming way to transfer ebooks (all of mine are in epub (and for sure I'm not worried about DRM)) from my computer to the Tab. However, here's my sticky part. I HATE the look of the TouchWiz UI update. Loved the plain Jane Honeycomb that came with it (don't get me wrong, I think it added some very good features and needed updates), but the skin just makes it look silly to me. So my plan is to root and install a custom ROM of vanillia Ice Creme Sandwich when it comes out. That's why I'm looking for a third party (or Google) ebook reader.
I second the Nook App from B&N. Had a Nook color for about a year though and got used to the way the software works. Gave Nook to my wife and got the GT10.1. Just copy your epubs into the folder via varelawarfare's instructions and they'll turn up in your library. Haven't used the Kindle app much, but I prefer Nook over Aldiko, Google Books and the Samsung reader (but may just be because I'm used to it). I also use Overdrive reader as it is pretty good at seamlessly downloading DRM-ebooks (library for instance).
On my 8.9 the nook app seemed to be very sluggish, does it happen to everyone? I ended up using the book app that came with the tablet, its actually pretty good but some books it doesn't override the fonts thus doing weird stuff like keeping text black when I choose a dark background.
So it's really looking like the top picks for most people are either the Nook or Kindle readers or Akidio and Calibre for loading them onto the Tab? These are some great responses and suggestions from everyone! Super appreciative!

My take on this, since I spent a LOT of time looking for a good book / epub reader:
- Kindle: Need to convert to .MOBI format, no page-flip transitions
- eBook: Maximum number of files supported is 200, but does a good job otherwise
- Moon Reader+: Excellent reader, quirky but highly configurable, however cuts off last line of text for each page for some .epubs
- Aldiko Premium: Chokes when trying to load shelf, otherwise fine
- Mantano Reader: Very polished interface, developers listen to user feedback, handles PDF apart from .epub, no page-flip transitions
- EZ PDF Reader: Excellent for PDFs, but no .epub support
Bottom-line: I use Mantano
/would go for Moon Reader+ if Mantano were not available...
I tried several and Moonread it's my fav (never used Mantano, I'll check it out) since it offers alot of options and it allows to scroll smoothly between pages.
For loading books I use Calibre with "connect/share start content server" so it can be used wireless as a web store directly from the ereader or from the browser.
What I hate about all these ereaders is that none use the same folder for storing the epub files, some use /book, other /ebook or /ebooks
I'm using Aldiko for Epub and EZ PDF Reader for PDF. EZ PDF Reader is the only tool on Android with acceptable PDF quality (tried them all including Mantano, small text is unreadable).

So (if I'm reading this right) I can basically wirelessly update what new content I have on my computer to my Tab via wireless home network??? That beats having to use that freaking short cord that comes with my Tab. Heck... Thought just hit me. If I can remotely access my computer, wonder if (though that remote access and assuming of course that I'm in a wireless area) I could update my Tab content even when I'm away from the computer..... Interesting concept to me right there.

Yup! check on Calibre menu "preference-sharing over the net".
If your computer can be reached over internet it can be done everywhere otherwise just when you are connected on the same wireless router

Dear XDA wizards,
Ever since I got to play around with the newly installed apps from the google play store, there was one in particular that stood out for me. Yep, google play books.
Its damn awesome even if it really could use the opening book animation that ibooks has. The only thing that's driving me crazy is the absence of the option to import your own epub or books you bought (or downloaded) elsewere.
I mean aldiko is fine alright, but i want to use this app. I searched round and round and nobody has found out a solution to this. Yes there has been filed a ticket at google, yes i can use other ebook apps and yes I read every freaking thread.
So i would kindly suggest if you can perform your magic to finding out why or better how to solve this.
somewhere it had to do with drm epub or something i thought.
thank you!

I feel the same way. It would be amazing if Google would just add this feature in a future update or if an XDA wizard could come up with a workaround. I'm currently using the Nook app but Google Play Books is so much sexier.
Play Books just updated with a description saying it supports epub format. Does that mean we can import now? I can't figure out how! Help!!!

been trying i can't figure it out!!
Indeed, that would be great! Prettiest reading app so far!
Has anyone made any breakthrough to import books with this app?
Bump - I'm curious about this as well. Ridiculous that Google doesn't allow importing...
Bump - searching for a solution too.
go to the playstore and download file converter app. it will give you choices on different formats to convert files to. with ebooks it pretty fast. just takes a few minutes. it even works for converting videos as well. to read the book just make sure you have a pdf reader and your good to go.

That's not what people are asking. You just described how to download the books you purchase in Google Play Books. Only useful if you want to read those purchased books offline.
We are all asking how to add our other books into our Google Play library app.
It's absolutely insane that even my Google Drive docs in PDF, ePub, and Mobi can't be opened on Android devices.
I hate to say this but Google Play is still a crappy market and service. The apps are great but Google, of all companies, has heavier DRM insanity than anyone else at this point. I can't even copy my mp3s purchased from Google Play to my wife's Play account (it says it was purchased from a different Play account and blocks it from upload).
Feedback to Google: great apps, ****ty Play store. Even in 2012, the only way to consume digital media is to buy your music from Amazon and buy your books/movies hard copy and download the digital books and movies from torrents (or torrent it all I guess and skip buying anything until they get their act together).
Bump - Any news about "Play Books"?
Will Google update the app or are there some developers trying to "fix" the app? Had you heard something about?
Bump,
How about we collectively send this in as a bug, which might give our desire for the import feature more attention.
I went to: support google.com/googleplay/bin/static.py?hl=en-GB&ts=2481847&page=ts.cs , and sent this in as if it were a bug. Which, I think it's fair to say it is. This is may biggest personal grievance from being in the android world, and I hope to push it to be resolved.
Edit:
Also, we should recommend this as a feature, support google.com/googleplay/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=suggestions.cs
The links doesn't work. Can you please update the links?
