OK. Like a lot of people, I was horrified to discover that my Mac could no longer use my Hermes' bluetooth connection (DUN) after I upgraded to AKU 3.3. Microsoft lovingly removed DUN and added PAN, which MacOS doesn't support yet (rumors are that 10.4.9 or 10.5.0 will).
So I suddenly was left without a way to connect to the 'net using my phone and my MacBook Pro.
Plugging it up USB didn't do anything -- the Mac had no idea what the phone was, and didn't know how to use it for anything.
Enter MarkSpace MissingSync. I installed the latest version (3.0.1) on my Mac, and plugged in my phone to sync it up. By chance, I ran an 'ifconfig -a' in a terminal window, and noticed this:

So MissingSync is establishing a connection using a faked IP address. OK. Interesting. So I unplug the phone, and go into the all new "Internet Sharing" app on my phone, set it to USB and turned it to connect. I plug my phone back in, and MissingSync tries to start up (and fails). But the IP (en2) is still there. I turn off my Airport (wireless) connection, make sure Bluetooth is disabled (to make sure).. and do a netstat -rn, and lo and behold, my Mac has suddenly taken on my phone as a default gateway.

And... I'm on the 'net. I didn't have to create any connections, I didn't have to add any routes manually. Nothing. It just worked. (Yeah, I'm amazed, too).
Everything works. DNS, SlingPlayer, Entourage w/ Exchange.
I'm getting around 900/kbps down, 600/kbps up on Cingular/AT&T. Of course I live about 2 miles from Cingular HQ, so that's probably to be expected..
In MissingSync, turn *off* USB syncing, and it won't throw as many errors -- just sync via Bluetooth, but the drivers are still there, so it still comes up with an IP address and pseudo-ethernet device.
MarkSpace needs to market this. Awesome. It's not as convenient as bluetooth, but it's a lot faster, and you have the added benefit of charging your phone at the same time.
oh.. and one more thing... you can still use your phone for voice phone calls (when you're on 3G), and data. It works just like your're not plugged into it. And you can use a bluetooth headset with your phone while you're connected.
edited: make sure "use advanced usb networking" is turned OFF in the Settings>Connections page on your phone.
Wow, just tried this myself on cingular as well, 150k/sec down and 90k/sec up using EDGE. Extremely easy as well, just kinda works by itself if you have MissingSync installed. Posting using my TYTN right now actually.
I'm on the medianet unlimited plan so I connect through wap.cingular. Will I get hit for any additional data charges for tethering?

Very doubtful, although I don't know for sure. My phone is set to use MediaNET, and uses wap.cingular. I have PDA Unlimited Connect. From all appearances on Cingular's billing page, a notebook hooking into your phone via this method just looks like ordinary phone data to Cingular.
Now... I wouldn't use this as a primary internet connection. I'd bet if you put several gigs through the phone, they're going to get suspicious.
I actually use around 4-5 gigs a month normally (just with ActiveSync polling for mail and normal use), and they've never said anything to me.. so.. who knows.
Unfortunately, it's so difficult to get info from Cingular/AT&T these days (I'm still trying to get my [email protected] to work)..
My billing cycle is up in 7 days -- I will post back here if I see any different charges on my bill.

I am assuming that disabling the connection in Internet Sharing restores Missing Sync's normal (supported sync) functionality? Great pick-up. I already have Missing Sync and my 8525 will be here on Wednesday. Thanks.

Oh well, I bought it anyway. I'd already played with version 2.5 so I knew it was starting to get good. I can make use of some of the other features, (like importing my cameraphone snaps into iPhoto) but this internet sharing feature is why I bought it. And it works just as you said:
1) Run "Internet Sharing" on the phone with 'PC Connection' set to USB.
2) Plug into the Mac.
In fact "Missing Sync for Windows Mobile" shows up as a network interface in System Preferences / Network, too.
This is actually a lot nicer that the old way I used to do it. Before AKU 3.3 and Missing Sync 3 I was getting Internet access on my iBook over Bluetooth using Internet Connect and a lot of faffing around with modem scripts. I eventually found one that worked.. .but I always had to 'dial' 3 times before it connected and it took about 2 minutes to get a connection.
Now I can just plug in and go ... and my phone doesn't need a separate power supply to keep me connected all day. ** very happy **
(Yes, they should really advertise this!)
i'd really like my hermes to work on my Linux box, since I use it as my main system over XP.. i read a few articles regarding this, and it turns out the older version of synce worked on most HTC devices.. but for some odd reason the new ones dont seem to.. someone did mention that WM5 devices weren't supported for now.. the older WM2003 does tho..
if it makes any difference, I'm on Ubuntu Linux 6.10 32bit version..
any help is appreciated..

I followed the (lenghty) instructions on the synce site, and it works for me with my TyTN. I have not set up contact syncing, but I can browse/copy/run stuff from my Ubuntu 6.10 installations on my TyTN.

What version of Missing Sync are you using? It's working for me using version 3.01
It's 3.0.0 (315) and it reports as the latest.
Well that's clearly not true I suggest you download the new version from the site (I only got this a few days ago).
Upgraded to the 3.0.1 (downloaded from the site). The client on the phone upgraded as well. Still nothing. On the sync mode there is en2 connection (with orange status) in the network preferences. When I activate the sharing mode it disappears. Checked in terminal as well.
And you're *definitely* using AKU 3.3 on the phone?

I don't believe so, I've only tried using the "USB" setting. Besides, the phone gets power through the USB cable and more bandwidth. There is no advantage to using Bluetooth except not needing a cable!
Hello all, I have the xv6800, dcd rom 3.3.4 and activesync and internet sharing setup on Windows just fine. However, I have recently gotten a MAC, and I have not been able to get the internet sharing to work via BT or USB. I can understand BT cause I was never able to get it set up on windows either. I don't mind the USB connection, it's alwasy been more stable and a snap to set up with the ROM. However I can't get it working on the MAC. Is there a driver or app that needs to be installed on the mac side? The only think I remember doing on the WIN side is installing the modem driver.
On Mac, I have installed Missing Sync installed and I have been able to attach and sync my winmo phone without issue, so I know I have connection. but I cannot get the internet sharing to work. I checked out the verizon site and they state that they do not make a modem driver for the mac os.
I should also mention that I have winXP set up on the mac thru VMware, but I have been unsuccessful getting this to work the way my original windows laptop is setup. I dont want to set it up that way anyway if I can avoid it.
I am curious if anyone has this working via USB?? I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere. I couldn't find anything related and certainly not specific to this ROM.

i use BT in OSX... system prefs, bluetooth, setup a connection to the phone(+ button)... hit the bluetooth icon on the menubar, select the phone -> connect to network, thats all i have to do.

then just use internet sharing form the phone as normal?
no offense but that didnt help at all. I can connect my phone via BT themac sees it, but all I can do is browse device. I need to set up a connection with my phone to the mac and get online via my phone. I dont careif its bluetooth or not. I have the new macbook btw, if it matters
goon55: Like you, I always used a VM workaround to tether back when I had a Mac. I haven't tried this, but I've heard Syncmate allows Internet Sharing on Mac systems. Good luck!
I have no issues connecting my macbook for my 6800.
After you set it up like the other poster told you to, you should have a phone icon next to the bluetooth icon at the top right of the screen. click the phone icon then "connect bluetooth".

also when setting up the BT relationship, make sure you select the network services (i believe, there are one or two services you can check)...on the phone make sure you start BT and internet sharing (with BT selected) and when you go to the BT menu on the mac, your phone name should be under "devices", expand your phone name and select connect to network.

i had it
i had bt working for a bit and then was disconnected abruptly.
after deleting the profiles of the pairings on both the titan and the mac, it still wont share the connection although the phone will be connected in bt system prefrence pane, (where you select devices).
when it worked, i would select the phone in the device select, and underneath clicking on the gear to a menu option to 'connect to network'
it worked that wayfor 3 mins.
also, when i configure the device, if i set the phone to internet share while the mac is discovering the services, i get two options to select instead of just one:
access the internet
use device as network port.

best software you can use is http://www.wmwifirouter.com/ it works over BT or wifi and uses your phone's regular data access address which means you don't get tethering charges. NOTE I use the free version, and I have tried the tiral and although it does work, my mogul does not seem to like it and has little quirks after I install it (wifi turns on when I reset even if the switch is off, I don't why but its there).
Hi everyone, I've been trying to use my Windows Mobile phone as a modem for the Macbook, but so far I only see people being able to connect via BT. Problem with that for me is that BT drains both my laptop and phone battery quicker, so I'm trying to find a solution to connect via USB instead. Has anyone been able to surf on their Mac using their Windows Mobile phone as a modem via USB cable?
What you want is Mobile Stream USB Modem for Windows. Windows here being Windows Mobile, it works with my Mac.
Once you set it up, your phone is seen as a USB Modem and you dial from the Mac to this port. There is a free trial, take time to test it, read the forums, I had some initial issues to get it work right, but now it is good, I ended up purchasing it.
Tried BT sharing too, but too instable and drops. Tried the WiFi sharing, but eats battery...
Only downside: as you dial the data modem, it will fail if it is already in use (background email checking on your phone...). I have to disconnect the data connection on the phone to be able to dial from the Mac, otherwise it reports Port Busy.

I had the same problem, and tried everything recommended in the thread - no dice. I ended up just installing WMWifiRouter and that works like a champ.

I've been looking for a solution as well, and have yet to find one for USB Internet Sharing on a Mac. I currently just use Bluetooth with an external charger on the phone and laptop since it'll eat the battery of both quickly.
Have bought Archos device to use my HD2 as a source of internet, but till now there is no chance to make A70 see HD2 as Wi-Fi router (have tested Galaxy Tab - the same result, device do not see HD2). Tethering via BT is also failed - Archos is paired with HD2 but not connected.
Is there any solutions how to make Archos working through HD2 connection to Internet?

Yes, I know that it is possible while running Android, but I wanted to have one device with WP and another one with Android.
Have received info from WiFi Analizer app that HD2 is using Ad Hoc that is not supported by Android yet , so no chance for me. So will try to use BT thethering which is also not simple with Leo.
Is there anybody who succed to make work internet through BT thethering - have paired and once I succed to connect both devices, but even then browser failed to load pages
Make sure you're not trying to connect in the bluetooth setting - once its paired click on the 'tether' tab and assuming the apn details that you entered are correct it should just work
Bluetooth tethering works fine for me. I have Htc Hd2 on wm6.5 just put tmobile in apn settings should work was able to use it the other day to watch nfl on slingplayer. if i recall correctly i just paired it via bluetooth first then i went to the bluetooth tether and checked it on. try that.

I'm doing right the same, but tethering fails everytime
already updated to 2.2? my A101 didn't connect with tethering first.
I have a gtablet flashed with honeycomb. I downloaded the app PDA Net on my phone and tablet. Via bluetooth, the two devices find each other fine. Bluetooth light is on via phone. Proxy is set correctly on tablet, When I go online to any site I get a PDAnet message:Fail to connect Bluetooth server (java.io.IOExcetpion: Device or resource busy)
Did I miss a step or is somthing wrong? Can someone walk me through this? I am new to the tablets, but very anxious to get the most out of it.

Has anyone had much luck with tethering an Internet connection using bluetooth (not wifi)
I've tried tethering from my HTC Desire HD (ICS 4.0.4) to my Archos 101 G9 (ICS 4.0.4), after pairing I can get the tablet to connect and use the Internet connection, but after a minute the bluetooth connection drops out.
Has anyone else noticed a similar problem?
I've found a few threads on the Asus Transformer section with a very similar issue but they seems to have been fixed by a recent firmware update from Asus.

I got it to work once using pdanet tablet and foxfi. I can't get it to work anymore though.
At OP make sure you have tun.ko installed on your tablet so Bluetooth tether may work.

I have a 101 G9 Turbo 8GB version I bought off Sellout.Woot back in March. I installed a rom off XDA but I don't remember which one! It was one of the 3.2.80 versions though. After some trial and error I have been able to tether my tablet to my Nokia E71 through bluetooth DUN using the command line. It isn't the easiest to do but its usable.
it works good when tethering from Asus transformer to my archos g9 101 but the speed isnt the best.

It works outstandingly for me:
Phone: Verizon XV6900 (aka HTC Touch - CDMA EVDO rev A, no wifi), WinMo 6.1 running Internet Sharing utility.
Archos 80, "Staples Special" (1 Ghz/512 MB RAM/7 GB storage - listed as 4GB, go figure), ICS, FW 4.0.6
How I did it:
1. BT pair the phone and tablet (duh ;-)
2. Make sure they are connected - tap the phone device name in the Android BT settings list so it shows connected
3. Start ICS ("Internet Connection Sharing" - they had that acronym long before any Google Android existed ;-) on the WinMo phone, tap its "Connect" soft key.
4. Android settings: "More.../Tethering & portable hotspot/Bluetooth tethering" check marked (yeah, I thought that meant the Archos would share its connection - dunno about that, but it is working in the opposite direction for me - go figure).
I streamed a TunedIn radio stream for several hours this way at a hotel recently (good thing I have the "unlimited" data plan grandfathered, but looks like I only used about 20MB, picking 40Kbps stream).

It does work because the two bluetooth device are connected and if the second support being used as a modem...it will default into that Internet Sharing profile.
I don't think your step 3 & 4 is necessery. I've used Archos 80 with Nokia C3 and other Android Tablets. It seems to more work with Bluetooth 3.0 devices.
Instead of 3 & 4 above ...you should go to Bluetooth, find the paired and connected device and click on the Setting icon....you will see a check box there which checked by default "Use this to connect to the internet"
I dont get the Blutooth tethering to work...

Pairing is no problem.
But starting ICS it tells me that a NAP network is required and the G9 does not support that...
I did exactly like rokkywoof described, but :-(

Cool - you are correct that step 4 is not needed (probably explains why I was so surprised by my "misunderstanding" of the Archos' tethering setting - no misunderstanding at all since, instead, that BT setting you point out is what must be setting the Archos to tether off a device such as my phone).
However, step 3, on my XV6900 phone at least, is most definitely needed. Unless the phone is running that ICS app, it has no way to share its data network connection for Internet access - it will not run it automatically. Good thing, too, or it would run the battery down in no time.

If my acronym lookup is correct, "NAP" means Network Access Point, and that should be what your phone connects to in order to share that connection with the Archos (tethering). The G9 really should not "care" how your phone connects to a data network, or did the G9 throw that message? If so, that would seem to indicate the G9 is trying to share a mobile data connection it does not have (assuming no 3G USB device plugged into the USB port on the back of the G9), so maybe you need to unset the Archos tethering setting that my step 4 specifies, as
nashi20002003 pointed out in correcting my instructions. I have found now that I only need to go as far as step 3 (contrary to nashi20002003's other "correction" - I have to respectfully disagree with that part in that I must manually run ICS on the phone ).
Have you ever had the ICS (assuming you meant WinMo Internet Connection Sharing, as I did - not Android version, Ice Cream Sandwich) utility to work for any other device? Do you get data connections (web, email, etc) now with the phone when using it by itself?
Back to the phone setting, my ICS window shows 2 dropdown text boxes. One is "PC Connection" with choices of USB or Bluetooth PAN, the latter being what I use with the Archos. The other dropdown box is "Network Connection", and my only choice is "Data Network Connect", which is my Verizon 3G connection.
I would guess your phone has some variant of GSM technology such as my T-Mobile Dell Streak 5. It has an Access Point specified (epc.tmobile.com) under its Android Settings/Wireless & network settings/Mobile networks/Access Point Names. I would think that is what your NAP refers to, and it needs to be set and active for a data connection for your phone to share. Maybe your ICS setup needs a configuration item set for that which is equivalent to my "Data Network Connect" mentioned in the preceding paragraph? ICS has a path to those settings in its menu on the bottom right via the "Connection Settings" option, but that is too complex for me to step through right now - especially since I have not touched it for a couple years (thinking it "just worked" as installed, and likely I never "touched" it) .

I click connect (bottom left) and the phone then tells me that it cant connect to a NAP network.
I think I have to tell the phone Bluetooth that it should provide something like a "Modem-Profile" and the g9 that it has to use the paired phone as the internet-connection. But I am not able to find these two items anywhere...
I already looked through Bluetooth settings (bottom right in ICS onPhone) but was not successful in finding any valuable items or settings.

A further "Go Figure" on the Staples Special is that the CPU is actually 1.2 Ghz. Go figure. Finally go weigh it. Spec says 475g, actual 525g. I think they added a metal plate to the back to stop your finger from causing the swirlies. I also believe that TI recently quit making OMAP 4430 in 1 Ghz, but my guess is the literature was already produced. Maybe they stopped making 4 GB storage too!

I already looked through Bluetooth settings (bottom right in ICS onPhone) but was not successful in finding any valuable items or settings.
If you have any further ideas I would very much appreciate your help!

At this point, all I can suggest is focus on getting your phone's ICS to work. Are there any other settings for Network Connection than "Internet GPRS"? If so, you might want to try them to see if that gets any better results (or at least informative messages that might provide any useful clues).
Do you (or a willing friend) have any other devices with Bluetooth that can network via PAN? If so, see what results you get with them.
As for the G9 settings, when I go to the Bluetooth settings, the phone, in my list of paired devices, has a settings button (the same 3 horizontal lines with "blips" on them as used for the main overall Archos settings button image, only smaller), and when I tap that, it shows a "Profiles" section with option for "internet access" that takes a check mark to activate - do you see that on your G9? Even so, if the phone is throwing that NAP error, I doubt that will make any difference, but at least see if it is available.
BTW, I updated to the 4.0.7 "firmware", so that makes no difference on my G9 80.

Ah - Staples not catching up with all of the Archos updates might explain some, but not all, of the discrepancies.
The current Staples description only states "OMAP 4 ARM CORTEXTM dual-core A9" without specifying which TI processor. My tablet's info shows 4460, but not speed, and Archos' site specs for the 80 state still state 1Ghz, and, for the TURBO, "from 1.2GHz to 1.5GHz (at start of 2012)". Did you actually measure the speed with some utility?
I just weighed mine on a food scale, and it is just under 470 grams, so about the 465 that Archos specifies for this model, and a lot less than the 1.4 pounds (635g) the Staples listing has. No plate in mine? Not seeing the screen "warp" issues.
Also, Staples specifies 8.9" sceen, but my measurement is about 7.9" (which makes sense as the visible part of an 8" inch screen as specified on the Archos site, and what this model is listed at "everywhere".
Lesson: don't take Staples' specs at face value!
Was there ever a 4GB internal storage variant?
Yes. Sorry for oversight. I only meant to say what I said for step 4. Step 3 is phone dependent. I had to do that on my old windows phone and the old 5IT. With g9 with Motorola zoom and nokia c3 I did not have to do anything else. Cheers!

Hmmmm.... my Phones ICS works like a charm as the Internet-Access for a DELL-Notebook via Bluetooth. I paired the devices, started ICS on the phone and told the notebook to use this connection for network access.
That is what I am missing on the g9: I have the settings button for my phone on the g9 bluetooth menu as well as you have it. But when I click it, I only have 2 items to choose:
1. Rename the paired device name (thats my phone)
2. Unpair devices
A "profile" item does not exist :-(
(I do not know the exact notation because I use a german g9)
BTW, I am on 4.0.7 firmware as well...

Ah - so the phone is proven to work with ICS - good data point.
That, along with the facts that ICS is throwing the missing NAP message, and the G9 not showing an Internet connection option for the pairing with the phone, suggest the possibility that the pairing went the "wrong way" - i.e., the phone is looking to the G9 for services instead of the other way around.
Try this:
1. Unpair the devices.
2. Start ICS on the phone. See if it will "connect" - if not, ok.
3. Make the phone BT visible.
4. Initiate pairing from the G9.
5. Now see if the G9 has an internet connection option for the phone BT.
If not, I am totally stumped.
If so, try it (start ICS connection if it would not start in step 2)!

Sorry to say a lot of phones are not working with this bluetooth tethering built into HOneycomb and ICS. You will need to use Android Pdanet for tablet in combination with it's associate phone app. Unfortunately that's only available on Android. Not Symbian or Windows. Even the Nokia phones which worked fine with the Archos Bluetooth Tethering App on Gen8, are not working with the ICS Builtin version. For a while I had thought Archos did not include this option until one day I noticed I can pair my tablet with a Motorolla Zoom. Then I a couple of phones I knew worked with BT Tethering in Gen8 and they did not work with my G9 tablet. But I tried Nokia C2 and it worked. I looke into finding what profile was needed on the phone side beside DUN or PAN...but I did not find what mande the difference between the Nokia C2 and Nokia E71. E71 worked fine with Archos BT Tethering on Gen 8. So did Nokia 5230 Nuron. But both would not work with G9. The only I've come up with is the BT version of the phone. Both C2 and Zoom have BT 3.0 Tried my Samsung Exhibit II but it would not work. Samsung Galaxy Blaze 4G and HTC Amaze 4G and they work.
I think old phones with BT version less than 2.1 won't work. Not sure why.

I have an old Nokia E71 myself and the rooted 4.0.6 firmware on my 101g9 tablet. In the bluetooth options on the tablet for my phone all I get are the options to rename or unpair the phone. No other options at all.
I know the E71 has the DUN profile in it. I CAN successfully use the dun profile but I have to use the command line to do it all. BUT you have to have rooted your tablet as you wont be able to use some of the commands otherwise.
You have to bind the channel the phone is using for DUN (switches between 2 and 4 oddly enough on my phone) to /dev/rfcomm then start ppp manually from the command line.
Some programs will NOT recognize the active ppp connection as a valid internet connection. The standard browser will work just fine though. I use Opera Mini for browsing to help keep my data usage down while using the tethering.
