MY FAV SETUP to date - waiting on updates or Cyanogen - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am only posting this so those who like to try new things can try this setup. It is not for everyone, but my phone is amazingly snappy, apps are opening pronto, and my battery/gps are perfect.
I am currently running Eugenes Ginger Clone R2:
http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=144
Notes: this does not have the shortcuts in the notification bar and also does not have swype (note the name of the ROM.... dont complain about this).
After my initial boot and getting everything all setup I flashed the JL4 stock + voodoo, found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870480
With Eugene and supercurio combined the only way I am going to shift from this is if they themselves update, or Cyanogen comes out... stronly suggest trying this out. Be certain you are comfortable with this before trying it. You will need to disable voodoo before flashing anything else.
to disbale, go to the sdcard/voodoo folder and create a file named "disable voodoo" (without the "'s") and then reboot... it will then convert back from EXT4.
HUGE THANK YOU TO EUGENE AND SUPERCURIO - my phone might as well be the Nexus S (but with an SD Card and Gorilla Glass)!!
Anyone else running this? Do you agree that others should try it?

Not what I'm running, but lets make this a "my ideal setup until CM" sorta thread, which is how I read the subject line at least.
So far, my favorite themed setup was Frobuntu, but I had some issues with system processes chewing up CPU. So now, Blackhole. 1.1 was great, just flashing 1.2 now. Customizable - I love that. Just pick what I want in ROM Manager and it loads up. No hunting down extra files to flash or ADB push, dealing with megaupload, hotfiles, etc. I think I'm staying here until we get a CM or true AOSP build.

This setup sounds like one I've seen before if I could only remember where I saw it ohh I'm running it and it is fast but I put swype back in it I like the speed of swype the jl4 modem wasn't giving me the best connection but jl1 is pretty good but my phone is running fast as fast can be

What will JL4 do?

PERIODS and COMMAS are FUN!!
j/k, did you flash the add-on Swype from the R series roms? If not, which Swype did you use? I'm going to grab an old .apk on my pc later today probably.

I used the swype.apk from the thread I cant remember which thread it was but I'm using naked swype the black back drop and white letters it looks amazing with the black froyo theme msg morph
And punctuation if for rich people lol
egc-r2+voodoo jl4+jl4 modem

Bionix Fusion 1.2 w/ CoreR 1.2 GHZ + OCLF = fastest thing since lighting = average 2900 quadrant score. This setup was unfathomably fast, however, when reinstalling apps with TB i had problems, as i came from a 2.2 build.

Doesn't Ginger clone already have stock JL4? And super I/O? So I just need voodoo?

i'm using Eugene's Ginger Clone R2 with JL4+voodoo kernel with JL1 modem.
I upgraded this from ttabbal's dragrom which i injected AOSPish 1.1 into, with BLN. I might change GC R2 over with ttabbal's dragon kernel and use BLN.
But right now, "stock" kernel is fine.

Been getting this (at least) for a while already with Axura + Voodoo. Maybe typical for many of the popular roms when combined with Voodoo. When the 2.2.1 based ROMs become stable on the Vibrant, combining that with Voodoo might make me want to change. Other than that, short of GB Stable becoming available I probably won't see the need to change.

ooo i was flashing a wrong VOODOO not the one you told me to, disabling the old one and gonna flash the new one and tell you results.

Once again, thank you to all the devs that put their own time into cooking ROM's, kernels, etc. for the Galaxy S, Samsung should really give up Galaxy S branding to XDA devs, so far Samsung have shown zilch interest to stand up by their promises and product.

Correct, but the bible hasn't been updated in a month.
Nor has the wiki which can be found HERE.
To be honest, I've only found minimal difference in the performance of the most recent 2.2 ROMs. They're all fairly good.
Before you jump in to deep, please do some research. You will save yourself alot of headaches. The stickies are a great place to start.
Powered by Axura with a dash of Voodoo
ROMS
This is some kind of basic orientation:
First, nobody can really tell you which rom will work better for you.
Vibrant problem is that, there are many variations on the hardware, some have a bigger nand, some can be overclocked some cannot. Some get problems with vodoo.
You just have to be ready to experiment, and most importantly not to panic if something goes wrong.
First step. Get familiar with ODIN, learn how to use it and most important, learn how to get your phone in Download Mode.
Step two. Be sure you have the original shipping rom (pit and tar files) at least to odin back to shipping stock. This can save your life if OC is not supported by your phone, if you forget to disable vodoo or lagfix before flashing another rom, and so on)
Step three. If you install any kind of lagfix, including Voodo, be sure to disable it, before flashing anything else. (If you forget you vcan always fix it, going back to stock and repartition it, i can't recall anybody actually bricking a Vibrant just for doing that)
Decide if you want stock or a modified rom. Read, read a lot, to see adventages and disadventages of each.
Decide if you want 2.1 or you are ready to go for froyo
And remember, I can't recall anybody bricking the phone, but be careful you can always be the first, and is only your responsability not anybody else, if you brick your phone.
ohh hand don't forget to HAVE FUN!!!!
My suggestions...

Take a look at my recent video reviews of some of the latest popular ROMs. There are instructions in the description box of the videos to get you started =]
I embedded one of my videos below. This one showcases Axura 2.2.5.7. A great looking ROM that is fast, stable, and again, very good looking. If you check out my channel I have other videos of other ROMs. A video of Nero v3 by Team Whiskey will be up in an hour.

I strongly recommend AXURA. I'm currently on 2.2.5.7. Very stable and fast, unlike Nero v3 in my experience. I'm actually surprised at how stable it is!
I was using CyanogenMod 6.1 before Axura, which is a complete AOSP Android build (without any Samsung crap) with many improvements. I've been using CyanogenMod since I had my G1 before the Vibrant, and I really wanted to use it on my new phone, but unfortunately it's still buggy. Even with sombionix's SD mount fix, the external SD cannot be mounted. Video playback doesn't seem to be GPU accelerated like it normally is. Mounting USB usually tends to consume lots of memory on the phone (maybe a memory leak?) while I work with large files, and it just stops the connection.
I didn't want to use a Samsung-based ROM, but Axura is the best right now IMO.
Axura ROM thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=891657
I would stay away from anything tagged team whiskey. Axura, imo, is the most stable of the vibrant mods. Try them all and decide for yourself but get comfortable with Odin and imaging back to stock. Especially if you test out TW mods.

Why? I got NeroV3 and love it. Got the leaked Froyo from Team Whiskey in NeroV1Beta3 and then upgraded to Nerov3 using JUST my phone. You have to give them a few points for making it so dam easy. As far as stable, been running it through the ringers for days now with no problems whatsoever. You enable the Voodoo on NeroV3 and it will scream. I got the Touchwiz version, you should give it a shot OPer

Nero V3 w/ Launcher Pro is more of the way to go lol.. Voodoo enabled of course. Super fast, I'd put Axura in there but, Axura is slightly more buggy and has this problem with the white or gray font color in the notification bar with music players, where the font blends in with the gray theme.. Nero is sleek and clean and bugless IMO.

[Q] What ROM to start with?

Hello All,
I just rooted my Vibrant last night, and installed ROM Manager/Clockwork recovery mod. The last thing I did was do a backup of my device in case I either don't like the ROM or need to switch back. Anyhow, needless to say I'm a newbie to all of this. I've been trying to do some research, but I see an endless amounts of ROMS. I've seen some videos on Euegene's roms and some of the team whiskey ROMs. I was hoping you guys might be able to give me some tips or recommendations on what ROMs to start or stick with. Lastly, if I installed a ROM what happens to my purchased apps from the market? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Well here is ALL personal choice. You will notice that somethings will work for you and somethings will not work for others.
I would start with Nero V3. It is a Froyo (2.2) ROM based on Gingerbread (2.3). Again it is not Gingerbread.
Why start with this one and not Nero V4.1??
Well because Nero V4.1 has voodoo lagfix installed by default and TRUST ME you don't want to start messing around with voodoo if you are a newbie. Everyday there is someone whining about their phone not working because of voodoo.
But mainly inform yourself about every ROM and try them out, people flash ROMs all the time just to try them out so I recommend doing the same. And don't try to break your head trying to know everything it will get to you later on (like Over Clocking, Kernels, Under Voltage, etc.)
And you can download all your purchased apps again from the Market (data does not save this way). I highly HIGHLY recommend Titanium Backup, it will restore your apps just the way the used to be before (with data), just make sure not to restore system apps just third party apps.
When I first started flashing roms I tried axura just because the theme over it was like nothing I have ever seen before. At the time appearance was more important to me vs performance. Ever since that I have stuck with axura because its got looks and performance especially now.
Its all personal choice. I recommend that u read the first post of the roms and see the features list. Then look at the screenshots to see if u like the look of it. Finally just read some of the recently posts in the thread of current problems and see if u live this those bugs. Enjoy your rom hunt. To me its the most fun part!

I believe stock JL5 froyo is the way to go.
Do you want touchwiz?
Do you want a themed rom?
What is important to you.. what are you hoping for?
If you want performance and stability I think Nero V4.1 (yes, with voodoo) is the way to go. There is nothing tricky about voodoo... just know that it will convert your file system (nothing is lost) to EXT4 which is MUCH faster. This is what the Galaxy S comes with stock. It is also what popular roms like CyanogenMod do.
The one caveat is you MUST disable it before you flash something else over it to be safe. You simply go to CWR and disable on next reboot.... that's it. Takes about 5-10 minutes to convert and there is a voice telling you what's happening while it boots.
Nero V4.1 is going to be very popular so themes, etc will be abundant soon.
I also REALLy like Axura roms (i am one of the few on here who seem to be willing to give both developers a lot of respect). I was one of the very few who noticed data drops on the latest axura .9 rom though. With it I also used voodoo and both it and nero 4.1 were almost identical quadrant scores 1520+.
That said, quad scores mean nothing... what is important is BOTH fly. I do like the animation/theme of axura a lot more. It comes with a lot more launchers to choose from. Some consider this bloat, some like the options.
I am using Nero 4.1 with voodoo and ADW EX and I do not think anyone on this board could be as happy with their setup. I'll leave it at that.

Touchwiz is what your phone is running now which includes the launcher, icons, samsung apps and such. Its basically Samsung's overlay to Android just like Htc uses Sense and Motorola uses Moto Blur. I personally use Nero 4.1 with Touchwiz just because I like some of Touchwize's elements even though I use Launcher pro to customize to my delight. I can tell you once you start flashing it becomes and addiction. Also don't forget that if you back up your stock rom and load a froyo rom, you cant just go back to eclair without flashing an eclair kernal first. Read up on that. Good luck!!!
I strongly recommend Version V4. 1

Awesome man, be sure and enable voodoo for a much snappier phone. Just remember to disable it (via CWR, or the app Voodoo toggle) before you flash anything.
Worst case you forget, you can just use ODIN (recommend the alt method in my noob guide because it keeps root).

Thanks again for the help, and tip! I just downloaded voodoo toggle. This ROM is awesome! By the way, if i wanted to switch to another ROM let's say Axura's ROM would I need to flash my phone back to stock or can I just load that ROM up? I just didn't want to miss any steps lol. Anyhow, thank you all again!

[Q] Is VOODOO really needed now?

I know and love EXT4.... I've sweared by voodoo and it was the only lagfix I ever even considered. Until recently.
I went back to stock JFD (use my guide if you like)
I downloaded and flashed Heathens Private Stock
* please note voodoo is not enabled, if you have voodoo, disable it before flashing if you don't odin back to jfd first.
And...
I can not tell a difference without Voodoo. It seems JUST as fast if not faster than the previous ROMs I have used. A huge kudos to jellette as this ROM feels very nice and has a very nice theme to it. Switching back and forth between apps and they load very fast.. not noticing lag like on JFD. I realize Froyo helped this, just surprised is all.
Benefits:
- Discovered if /system is EXT4 *voodoo* you can't restore a backup in CWR
- Not having to worry about disabling voodoo (not done so much anymore)
- Seems just as fast and phone is how it shipped
- Voodoo Sound can be loaded from the Voodoo Control Plus app (not missing that feature)
Cons:
-Not sure yet, I suppose lower quadrant scores (meaningless anyway). I am getting barely over 1k, but it feels just as fast as when I was using voodoo.
Encourage you guys to backup everything, go back to stock and then try this ROM....
Question remains, is voodoo necessary?

Good question! I was actually wondering this the other day. I tried a few different ROMs without lagfix.
I was wondering the same thing about it. "Is lagfix just a workaround to cheat higher quadrant scores?"
After a day or so on any ROM I tried without lagfix you would notice a slow down mainly in shutting down programs. Sometimes they would take up to 5 seconds to close! Opening programs slowed some but not nearly as noticeable. The dialer would take some time to open as well.
So in my experience lagfix seems to speed the phone in read/write capabilities. Which I imagine is what it was desinged for. You notice in Quadrant, that is where the most improvement is (In I/O).
So if you arent a real big phone geek (like most of us probably are) then the lagfix shouldnt make a huge difference to you. But, for me, I like my phone to fly doing anything. So lagfix enabled here!
It's not all about the speed. Its good to have a standard. This phone should've been on ext4 from the start. Supercurio has done a great job getting everyone switched over. I don't believe rfs is supported in cwm3+ either.
Just my opinion. I always use it. If I flash something else its an easy fix. Just flash an ext4 compatible kernel!
Edit:
I just reread your post, and I've never had a problem restoring backups. In fact, I flashed to an i9k Gingerbread ROM this morning, played around with it for a while (read: smashed my face against the gps), flashed a Froyo kernel and restored my nandroid without ever using ODIN or RFS
rfs = sux ballz (wen i first got my phone and started rooting one of the first things out of my mouth was wtf is rfs!)
ext4 = ahh, thats btr
I agree that stock felt oddly similar with voodoo enabled and disabled when i tried it for a day yesterday.
I disagree that you cant restore nandroids with CwMRecovery. For me it seems like its hit and miss which i'm gonna continue to test.

Like I said, I love Voodoo.. I've only considered EXT4 and it is my preference... thought I made that clear.
BUT, I have not noticed any difference with it vs. using jellette's ROM, and that is really surprising to me. I know it can tend to "slow down" over time (which I do not understand why).. but changing from app to app I am noticing no difference.
Regarding restoring backups....
I said that because the man himself made THIS COMMENT just yesterday. I have had issues in the past (5 x maybe) where a restore failed, never knowing why. I've also had them restore fine, not sure why the difference.

I know and love EXT4.... I've sweared by voodoo and it was the only lagfix I ever even considered. Until recently.
I went back to stock JFD (use my guide if you like)
I downloaded and flashed Heathens Private Stock

Thanks for the info on Jelletts ROM. I am definitely going to try it out. I don't know about voodoo will test your theory for myself but kudos to Supercurio and the wonders he has made for us in the mean time.
I hear ya bro. Im not trying to ruffle any feathers here and yeah I saw u an koush tryin ta figure it out last night. Just thought i'd post my half and half results is all since I confirmed MD5 mismatch on one restore but an all good restore directly after and both with voodoo enabled which was posted as a possible problem. Didn't mean to sound as if I were putting werdz in ur mouth tho if I did. Just tryina help a brotha out!=)

I understood you perfectly.. just didn't want others to think I was trying to say something I was not. Thanks man.
Talked to Ben Buchacher, you know the creator of SuperD.
I asked him what ROM and if he had lagfix.
He said he was using stock 2.2 and no lagfix, the lag went away in 2.2
PS he said TW ROMs weren't great.

Wait, does Ben have a Vibrant?
He made THE rom for the G1. I could still run super d on my g1 and tolerate it.

Dude, that makes me so freaking happy. Is there a reason he is not gracing us on XDA.. I loved that guy back in the day.
You keep saying your using his rom, but which one are you referring to in hist thread? there is a 2.2.1 and a 2.2
I tried the 2.2 and it was laggy like the stock 2.2 and I have taken my phone all the way back to closed box and brought it up to 2.2(KB5) and there is always lag there. I don't mind Touchwiz but when a couple weeks go by and my phone starts crawling across the ground like a drunken sailor it gets a little aggravating.
Basically in my experience any rom, and I mean any, with or without voodoo runs great for a few weeks, but then the slowness comes back and you start to notice apps taking longer to open and close, MMS really starts to lag as well as the keyboard when typing. the gallery really takes a hit and showing pictures off on my 500 dollar 1Ghz phone becomes embarrassing. So with or without voodoo stock 2.2 on the Vibrant seems to run great but runs out of gas in a few weeks, some may last a month. 2.2.1(sucks with no Wifi calling) seems to keep going much better, and the browser is faster. So if your running 2.2.1 of his then yea you might see a better faster rom, but if you run his 2.2 I bet after a few weeks of regular use you will start seeing lag and get frustrated. And I bet even the 2.2.1 will start to crawl at some point.
Now I'm not dissing his rom or anyone else's. They are all based off of the crap the Samsung shoved out the door and yea a few tweaks here and there help, but every rom always seems to start crawling at some point and nothing seems to bring it back to day one other then reflashing.
Well, I guess once it's been out for a few weeks I will let you know. I am taking one of our best developers word on this matter though. I'm not saying I am right.. just pointing out someone smarter than me says so, and after using it for a few days I have to agree... so far.

which rom are you running the 2.2.1 or 2.2
The only thing really keeping me on 2.2 roms is wifi calling.
I'm on 2.2.
The rom is not perfect, but it works very well for me so far. I went to cut on my screen and it was stuck at all black (buttons would lite up) so I just held in power to reboot.... first time I've noticed ANY issue with this rom. Odd, I think it had something to do with me going crazy backing out of the browser and then shutting down my screen.

I have gotten that on quite a few roms including two versions of trigger and three stock builds. I get out of it by pressing the power button 3-5 times giving about 1-2 seconds between presses and it eventually came back.
I might try the 2.2 build out eventually.

He is waiting for CM to be a better build than right now. He wont work with a TouchWiz base.
I loled when I asked him why he wasn't using a custom rom from TW and he said it sucked!

I'm not a fan of putting anyones work down.. especially when it's free/
I once knew a dog by the name of Raphael Francisco Sanchez. He pooped in the same place everyday, and then walked through it like the dumb mutt he was. Over time the poop built up till eventually the dog could no longer run and play with all the other little doggies, and when the lawnmower came around that spring, Raphael Francisco Sanchez barked his last bark.

[Q] CM7 to Axura or maybe Bionix

hi, playing with my phone is not really a hobby for me.. i just want something free of stock bloatware, has a working GPS, and hopefully, no Carrier IQ. So I hope you can forgive me if i'm asking a basic question that is answered somewhere in the Vibrant bible or elsewhere.
i recently flashed to CM7 because of the Carrier IQ thing.. knowing that some people were having GPS issues. If the GPS were my only problem, i could probably live with CM7, but my phone is also suffering from ' Screen of Death ' unfortunately.
I do actually really like CM7.. it is very fast.. but between the no GPS and the SOD's i'm experiencing, i need to get off of it.
so, i believe i want to go back to a Froyo ROM. From there i guess i'll try the Carrier IQ removal tool.
my question is, can i safely flash to Axura or Bionix using CWM, directly from CM7 ...or must i 'odin' back to stock first ?
thank you
Odin first
thank you very much for the reply.
so i was reading through this

is this where i want to begin ? Odin back to Stock ?
strange, I'm on cm7, overclocked currently to 1500 with glitch kernel and have no GPS issues or anything. I've used axura and bionix they are cool... But I came to cm7 to use my ps3 controller with my psx roms...unfortunately no TV-out on cm7 :-(, that would make it complete.

Just a little addition. From what I understand Carrier IQ is something that the carrier has to request. To my knowledge T-Mobile did not have Samsung build it into the Vibrant's Android builds. So no Vibrant rom "should" have CIQ. I've tried the majority of our roms and have never seen it. So I wouldn't worry too much about it; on the Vibrant at least.
The glitch kernel can be acquired through a $5 app on the market named (glitch)...note if you clock it to 1700 mhz....your phone will probably go into an infinite reboot loop.....um...merrr just got the news of cm bailing on us....oh well

interesting.. i downloaded the app that detects carrierIQ and i thought i interpreted the results correctly.. i believed my vibrant running Axura had it. perhaps i misunderstood the results of the test.

[Q] Rom Opinions

Now I know opinions are like a**holes.... everybody has one, but lets see if we can cut through the BS and get real answers with real experiences.
And I also know there are always threads like this coming up but I have not found an answer searching that I like.
Now for my story, I have a Xoom and and EVO that I have been using for quite some time now and am personally good with ROMs that have bugs and ROMS that are experimental, but my question has to do with my girlfriends Vibrant. I have had her on the team whiskey roms in the past with pretty good luck but right now I am just looking for the most stable and non glitchy ROM out there, I know there has to be one that people are using for daily drivers without bugs and whatnot with minimal upkeep that she can use and not get mad at me for something not working right
I know the ICS roms out now are not the answer as there is just too much unknown right now to create a stable release with no bugs and EVERYTHING working so can someone point me to a couple ROMS to try that advertise everything working the way it should (with the exception of going back to stock and anything with touchwiz)? Thanks in advance.
Fishman's Bionix-V Mod. He's done you the service of baking an Odin flashable file for it too making it really quick to swap over and be rooted up and ready to roll.
If not his maybe give one of Moped Ryder's ROMs a go. I only lean on Fishman's because I run "stock" Bionix-V and it's by far my favorite for a flash it and forget it kind of ROM (although I like tinkering with different kernels). Fishman's comes with Bali's UV kernel so it's good to go for a daily driver out of the box.
Fishman's Bionix Mod for me too. It's very stable, great battery life (for me), GPS locks in a few seconds and has T-Mobile WiFi calling which for me is important.
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441976
I know you said no ICS but passion v13.1 is very stable. I ran it for 3 months no issues before I switched for something with more customization available.
SGH-T959 ICS Gummy 1.2
Thanks guys I will give fisherman's a go
so the problems I am having with fishmans rom is that the scrolling on the apps is very laggy, and the web is very slow... new radio? ideas? i didnt do the odin flash but rather did a factory wipe and loaded the rom wiped dalvik and wiped cache let the rom bake for approx 10 min. Let me know what you guys think

how can I verify this, I searched and found lots of posts about voodoo lagfix but there is nothing like that for my other phones and tablet so I am not too familiar with it. is it a setting in recovery? Or do I need to flash a zip?
thanks for the help

You can check Voodoo in CWR. When you boot into Recovery there's an option for 'voodoo' and in there you can check all of that. If you're running Fishman's Bionix Mod it should already be enabled by default though.
Another thing you can try is use something like the Spare Parts app, or go into the Display option in Settings and turn all the animations to Fast. That won't necessarily help with app scrolling, but it makes the overall feel of the ROM "snappier".
I also added the following line to my local.prop file in the data directory (/data/local.prop):
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
Check XDA and you can read a little bit that it helps with the redraw of the homescreen, and I noticed a difference. But use something like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer (my fav) and you can make those changes to the file and then reboot.
If you do make that change, keep in mind that using something like Bladebuddy will overwrite anything you add.
