[Q] MicroSD2 file deletions - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Forum was getting a little bogged down with a few issues so I thought I would start a problem specific thread. I have transferred files (music and movies) to my 16gb micro SD. All the music is there, but every mp4 and avi file is gone. The only solution I can think of is to insert the card when I need it and removing when done. I love this tablet and the vegan beta 4 rocks. Much thanks to the hard work. I was curious if anyone has a solution to the sd card issue? It seems like it was happening on multiple roms.

Seems videos are lost during SD card scanning. What worked for me was create a ". nomedia" file in the root directory of sdcard2. Haven't lost any since.

Will try that. Thanks.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I tried creating the .nomedia file and it seems to have done the trick. My video files are not disappearing anymore. Thanks!

Question to Viewsonic:
Is this by design or is it just another problem?

I've got the same problem on my Htc Flyer.
How have I to create this file ?
has to be the name just like "aa.nomedia" ? Did I understand well ?

No, it's actually a file named ".nomedia" nothing else. You can use notepad++ on your PC to create it, or a file explorer on the device. You don't need any text in the file at all, just a blank file called .nomedia
Most instructions state to put it on the root of the SD card, but I took it an extra step and put it in every directory including the root...just to be safe, ya know

Contents Of SDCARD Deleted

Today I found that the contents of my SDCARD (internal) was deleted. It doesn't look like the SDCARD was formatted because 1 or 2 files were still left behind.
I don't know if this was what triggered the delete but this is what I did prior to it happening:
In Settings I unmounted the 32 GB micro-sd card. The alert said it was safe to remove the card.
I ejected the card.
I reinserted the card. The G-Tablet did not detect it.
I powered down the G-Tablet and then powered up.
The external card was now detected ad I found that I lost the contents of the internal card.
I am using update 3389 with the Enhancement Pack v1.
This is not good.
Was it just media files? If so, then this is a known issue (with stock, as well as mods like TnT Lite and VEGAn).

The DCIM folder was deleted. I also had a folder named "download" in which I had several PDFs and a subfolder with APK files. The xScope folder (with Cache, downloads and Themes) was deleted along with a few more that I do not remember their names.

I have been searching the forums looking for a fix for this and I haven't been able to find one. Tried to search the forums with an advanced search from Google as well, no lock. This is an old thread, but is there any update to this? Running Vegan 5.11, Pershoot kernal. I had a bunch of pictures and video that were deleted, but the folders/containers they were in were not deleted. Thanks in advance for any help.
add an empty file in root sdcard2 called .nomedia
thanks for that, will give it a try and will let you knwo if it works.

Yes, worked for me. Running Vegan 5.1
When you apply this file everything is supposed to stay and not be deleted right?
I installed VEGAn-TAB 7.0 and had the same problem with media files disappearing (.mp4 video files and .jpg files). Happened when I deleted one file from the internal storage (memory). Next time I came in to the Videos folder on the internal storage everything was gone. Another time happened after I unmounted and removed my external micro SD Card 16gb. Also had the same thing happen with media files disappearing from the external micro SD Card. Very frustrating. Finally put all those elusive media files on my trusty 8gb Transcend Flash Drive and lo and behold, everything worked fine and I could play all those videos, remove the USB drive and when next inserted everything was okay. For whatever reason, the USB flash drive works far better and more safely than the micro SD card. Plugged the USB flash drive into my USB 2.0 4-port hub along with the USB keyboard and USB mouse.
i am seeing conflicting fixes.
some people say to make a file named .nomedia in the root of the sdcard2
other people say to make a folder named .nomedia and put all your files inside.
the 3rd fix i see is to make a .nomedia file in each directory that contains media
which is the correct method.
thank you.

how did you make the file? if you are using windows to create the file over usb, it automatically adds .txt to the end. i suggest making it through a file manager on the tablet.
i have not tried this yet, i will when i get home.

i used notepad but i enabled "show known file extensions" and made sure its a .nomedia file. Even windows sees it as a .nomedia file.
I will try to make it from the tablet and see if that helps.

creating the .nomedia folder with ifilemanager worked. I created the folder then moved the files to the SDcard. I have rebooted numerous times and the files are still there. Previously they would have been deleted.
Thanks.

My problem is apps being deleted and not media.
I hope this thread isn't getting too old. So I am having similar issues with files being deleted periodically after some reboots, the only difference is that the majority of the time they are apps and no longer media.
Specs:
-Running CyanogenMod 7.0.3 stable
-I have created .nomedia file and placed on root of SD (no file extension)
-I use Apps2SD Pro to move apps to sd card
-When I notice that an app no longer appears in my tray after a reboot, i will reinstall from the market and before the install it will tell me that "this will replace an existing version already installed" which leads me to believe that the app is still there just not accessible.
There were a few instances where some of my ebooks and pdf's were being deleted, but that stopped after I placed the .nomedia file on the SD, but dont seem to see any change regarding deleted apps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Let's start with what exactly you did that resulted in you losing the pictures in the first place.
do you see a bunch of items in the lost.dir directory?
If so, then try opening some of the smaller ones with an image editing program. You never know... it might still open them. If that's the case then all you need to do is rename them with the proper extensions. Worth a try.
I lost over 600 image files myself for no apparent reason.
A google search quickly told me this was a "known android issue", but no effing idea why...
For me it want just camera images but ALL images on the sd card.

This is why flashing experimental/custom roms is often a process that will teach you to back up your stuff. Sometimes this lesson is learned the hard way....
You can try to mount the partition in Windows or MacOS and throw file recovery software at it, Recuva being one of the better free ones for Windows. Best of luck
lost.dir is a filesystem folder, (kinda like if you realy explore and ntfs drive, you'll find a SystemVolume folder, and a few other ones).
Your pictures aren't in the lost.dir folder. And you're probably one of the ones who had their internal SD wiped while using the dead horse kernel. Sorry to say, but there's no way to get them back.

@murdamo305:
Exactly. So as another use has already suggested...BACKUP! Both Titanium and MyBackup are available freely from the Market. Android bug or not with a working backup handy you don't lose anything.
Here's your situation:
You = lost information, want it back.
Problem = the way sdcards store info + the filesystem = pretty much impossible to recover usable info from your sdcard (specially since it has been written to again, no matter what you think). Sorry to say, but you're SOL.
lost.dir is a filesystem maintenance folder, pretty much exclusively for OSX use. It's not a "trashcan" or anything like that. It's not user accessible.
Besides, that kernel doesn't have code in it that says "move everything to lost.dir". It's got a bug in it that essentially runs a remove recursively and forced on the /sdcard/ directory.
Do a "check disk". It worked for me when i corrupted my memory card.

you can delete it, but the android system will create it again.
I dont appreciate some of your assumptions
Just to automatically assume someone has their phone rooted and or flashed right off the rip is stupid. My fiancée just came to me telling me all her music on her SD Card was gone. Windows says the memory is still occupied however I found all the music files renamed to digit only filenames with no file extensions in the Lost.Dir. I renamed one to Test.Mp3 and opened it. Kabam it played a 3 and a half minute song. So to tell someone that welp your files are gone sorry nothing you can do this is what you get for doing something that they might not even have done in the first place. Her phone is stock no mods, no roms no tweaks. It is a rare occurance that happens in the Android OS. Not a direct result of what someone might have been doing.

100% agree with you, i also suddenly lost my pictures from my ext sd card, i founded the lost.dir with the files i just rename with the JPG extension and the pictures come back to life.
For everyone that append the same, don't lost your hope, you DON'T loose your files rename with the correct extension and you'll recover the lost file.

MP3 files not seen in stock Music player

Am i doing something stupid, I cant get the mp3's I have on my SD card to be seen in the Albums/Artists etc in the stock music player app.
I can see no option to "add" them into it.
They exist on the external SD card.
Not had this issue before.. anyone got any ideas?
Try to copy the files to your pc - and then format thd sd-card when it is in the phone. Copy the files back on the sd-card.
I have a similar problem on my SGS, and this method was the solution.

My first issue with Galaxy S II. Will have to try this, my 15GB of music on external sd is not recognised
Still, anybody found out why this is happening in the first place? The only thing I remember doing that had anything to do with sdcard was installing Multi Mount SD-Card widget in hopes that it would give me quick access to mounting sdcard as mass storage. Didn't work though, uninstalled it and now music not recognised. I can see it in file manager no problem,it's just media store that is not finding anything on external sd card
Thanks for any tips.
I should have replied back.
Doing exactly the recommended worked a treat.
Now any new files i add to the SD card work fine. It's odd why it didnt work from day one though, but it works now!

I think the only plausible reason for this issue may be the file system that the ROM uses. After each time you change the ROM, try to make sure that you format the SD card to avoid problems like this in the future.
If it isn't about the file system, then I don't know, maybe the problem could be caused by the ROM itself, since it's "home-made", or some damaged components in the device. Anyway, I got this problem too and I have an original ROM, so I'll just try the formatting method.
same problem think it is different reason

I'm having a same issue here but noticed it involved more than this and it happened at a certain app install. Hope someone here will recognize something in this post and help me not have to re-install my entire stock ruu, starting over.
The stock music player quit finding the mp3's on ext_sd card. First noticed this, but the stock gallery will not find photos as well.
I used Twrp to do a factory reset and was installing files again (most of my favorite apk's are stored on ext_sd card) and had to start with ES File Manager. When I went to setup ES File Manager up it will also not log into my network! So, after a factory reset these three things are happening and all of this started after loading Sterickson's permission fixer. The one on the app store that has the badly drawn cd image as app icon. Is there anyway to fix this or do I have to go back to the stock rom install to fix what his permission fixer trashed?
HTC One sv BOOST running JB 4.2.2 unlocked/HTCDev, rooted/Chainfire SU & s-off/rumrunner.
Irritating to say the least.

Can't find music on SD card

Hey guys,
I've tried he stock music player, mixzing and xplay and nothing can find the music on my SD Card. I've used nearly every current Rezound Rom and they all have this same behavior. I've tried reformatting the SD, clearing data from all music/media search related apps, remounting the SD, fixing permissions, different folders, upper/lower case folder names, etc.
I've searched and found similar threads for different devices but no answers that worked.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks!
Use double twist. It's like iTunes for every device but apple. It'll let you load your music library and make it easier to load music in the future.
Also for reference my music is in sdcard/extsd/music/artists/album/songs
All I did was connect to my phone via USB, open the drive letter right after HTC STORAGE (the next drive letter should be the ext SD card), then make a directory called Music (capitalized), and copy the MP3 files to it, moved 451 files and then disconnected... Everyone show up in the stock music player and WinAmp, although it did take a few minutes for the list to populate.
I am pretty sure when you copy music to the SD card, it has to be in a directory called "Music", you can't just copy them to the root of the card.
I too have always just put all my music in a "Music" folder on the root of my sd, however depending on the device I've had players find music directly at root.
Have you tried using a like manager like astro to navigate to the files and play them directly?

You should be able to copy them everywhere and the music player should find it. I have music in "AmazonMP3" on the root, "musicdownload" where I get my music from Box, "Music" and even a song or two at root and "My Documents\Music" as well as a few in the "Download" folder as I've downloaded through http.
I'd say clear data from the music app in app management and let it rescan the card for data. Also, the phone can read WMA, MP3, MP4, M4A and maybe OGG. If you're trying some other formats I don't know if it'll see it.
P.S. On a funny note, the captcha just had me type TWATUS ... LOL
ROM Manager Sucks
I'll bet you have ROM Manager installed! The last two ROM Manager updates (including todays) for some dumb reason put a file called ".nomedia" in the root of the SD Card. This file prevents all media below it from being indexed.
Browse your SD Card and look for the file ".nomedia" in the root. Delete it and you will see all your media again.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I don't have a .nomedia file anywhere on the phone. I have all the music in a "Music" folder. I've tried everything in this thread as well as a dozen other things from other threads. It just doesn't work.
Weird thing is... the Gallery also can't see any photos/pics on the SD Card. It makes me think its a format problem or something? My SD is formatted FAT32? Should it be different?
How much extra "Junk" do you have on the SD Card... I just helped someone earlier today who had moved a microSD card from a Thunderbolt to the Rezound and it had a lot of extra stuff (old Nandroids, TiBu backups, and lots of other various files) and had the same issues. Copied everything off to a PC and formatted the card in the phone, then copied over the same music in the same folder and it was recognized like normal. Not saying this is the fix, but just did it this morning and it worked fine for someone else.
look in google play for a sd rescan app. Have that scan your card, that will help sometimes.

Write to external SD.

So, I'm not a noob, been rooting and running custom since the Nexus 1. I've searched and tried every fix, but no joy! I'm running doom's latest kernel and Monx latest rom. I've manual changed the proper files, and I've used apps like Fix SD and others and still can't write to my external SD card. Obviously, I'm rooted, so what am I doing wrong? I've seriously tried everything! Even the Music to SD module for exposed acts like it works, but when I try to use Play Music, it says "no space available". Even the Z2 built in "Transfer to SD" facility fails.
Please help!
Thanks,

Try this:
1. Using a root-enabled file manager like root explorer, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2. Edit platform.xml file and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add this group definition: <group gid="media_rw" />
4. Save changes.
5. Restart.
:good:
if the above method doesent work for you
you can try using a xposed module called handle external storage, it automaticly alows use of your External SDcard by default
*(you need root , xposed installer and the modle its self (it can be found from within the xposed installer under downloads)
Tried both these methods. To be fair, I tried them both again, just to make sure. As far as I know, all methods modify platform.xml, but no matter what I do, I can't write to the sdcard1 folder. My usual test is using Root Explorer to try and create a folder on Sdcard1. Always fails. Honestly, the ROM I'm using should have been enough, as it comes with write to external SD already enabled via the platform.xml tweak already. I even did a full factory reset yesterday to test. Still no joy.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
-Hans

Still not working
Many thanks to the gents who replied already. Unfortunately, none of the posted solutions are working. I can't find any information in the forums or elsewhere online that points to this. Everywhere I look, it says that the modification to platform.xml is THE answer. However, I've made those modifications nine ways to sunday and I still can't do anything with my external SD card. Can't create a file or folder using Root Explorer or E Strongs. Can't write backups using TiBu is the BU folder is on external SD, etc. Can't set then succesfulyl use the save location for camera or music apps as external SD. Very frustrating.
Has anyone seen or heard of this happening?
Thanks,
-Hans

Nope. Card works fine as far as I can tell. I can write to it via MTP when connected to my lappie and I can read from it just fine. But, I'll try a spare card when I get home just to completely verify.
Thanks,
i'm having the same problem but my phone is not rooted, i usually us ES File Explorer to do my file browsing and management but for some reason i can't delete, create or rename files or folders on the external SD card.
i did a clean format with my SDXC card in the phone when i first started the device and that's usually exFat. and thats when i started to notice the problem,... i couldn't delete or create files or folders from the ES File Explorer app,.... so i did a clean install again with the ES File Explorer and the problem is still there,.... also when taking picture and deleting the unwanted pictures that i took.... i would still see the pictures i deleted in the picture gallery / album....
im still confused on whats going on,.... last night i reformatted my SDXC card to FAT32,... but the problem is still there,...
i tried using the File Commander app that came pre-installed with the device...... for some reason i can rename, delete and even create files and folders.... this is the only app that let's me do all those things when it comes to the external SD card.
other apps such as QuickPic won't allow me to delete, rename or whatever i have to do my pictures on the external SD card

If you're not rooted, it's how KitKat now handled external (SDCard) memory. It does not allow apps to read/write outside of it's own folder.
oh wow,..... so what about the pictures i took from the camera? i can never delete picture's??? (data storage: SD card)
i guess i have to get use to using the built-in apps to do some of the stuff i need to do,...

Yeah. That's expected behavior on a non-rooted KK phone. My problem is that I'm rooted and I can't get anything to write to external. Total Commander, Root Explorer, ES File Explorer, Camera apps, etc. Nothing will write to External SD no matter how many times I make the required mods to the platform.xml file. It is driving me nuts.

I had the same issue before when I upgraded my S4 to KK, but installing FolderMount solved it, when I started the app it showed me a message that my phone has some settings that will not make the app work and it asked me if I want to correct it.. I said yes, restart and viola every thing is okay...

I don't know if it will work on Z2 ( I still didn't have it yet ) but you might try it...

Yeah you need to use the built-in file manager, File Commander, to delete your photos on microsd for non-rooted.
Looks like it was a bad card after all. I swapped it out and now everything works as it is supposed to. I have other issue, but I'll open a new thread for those
Thanks for the help folks!
