Q - how do I go about making my vibrant work on metro pcs? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it even possible? If so, how would I go about doing it?
Fyi I'm running nero v3, and am familiar with odin and flashing stuff
Thanks for any answers!

Unlock?
10 char limit

You can't.
The Vibrant has a GSM cellular modem. MetroPCS is CDMA.
It's impossible to work. You might be able to get a Fascinate working on Metro, though... but why? Metro blows horribly and T-Mobile is barely more expensive for vastly better service and coverage. I pay $65 a month for unlimited everything except calling (500 anytime minutes).

Does metro pcs has 3g?
Op: have u looked into simple mobile. They are cheaper than metro pcs. And u will be able to use ur unlocked phone on their network.

MetroPCS has been claiming for a while now that they have 4G LTE. They even have 4G LTE phone.
Is it their own network, or are they using Verizon?
BTW check out Simple Mobile, supposedly they use T-Mobiles network, but not too sure if this is true.
Edit:
Wow it appears the 4G LTE network is their own, they even released 4G phones before Verizon. Their 4G map is not too shabby, I guess MetroPCS is slowly becoming a serious player.
ps...I know people who have MetroPC, and they have less dead areas than I do on T-Mobile.

Thank you gents. Ill check out simple mobile, though ive never heard of them.

Metro's LTE is almost fradulent. They have one phone capable of using the LTE network and it's a crappy Samsung featurephone (basically a Gravity T with an LTE modem and a slightly refreshed UI).
The speeds I saw while playing with the demo in the MetroPCS store were barely better than regular old HSDPA on my Vibrant. Definitely not better than HSPA+ on my friend's G2.
If you want real LTE, Verizon's going to likely be the only game in town until AT&T and T-Mobile get their act together, or Sprint tells Clearwire to jump off a bridge. And Verizon's first LTE phone is a seriously dead-sexy Android 2.3, 4.3" screen HTC superphone. It almost makes me want to jump ship and pay Verizon $90 a month for what I pay T-Mobile $65!

Well, I don't even give a crap about the 4g or anything like that as long as it works, what I'm more concerned about is paying 50 a month for unlimited everything.

At&t phones will work on T-Mobile (or simlpemobile) network (calls, SMS, mms) but will not have 3/4G data. The modem hardware isn't compatible. You would get EDGE which is pretty slow.
If you use straight talk, you will get 3G data. You will have to buy a sim card online then get $45 refill card, and you would have unlimited everything.
I'm sure edge is faster than the 700-1000kb I'm getting from boost

Think "dialup modem" class speeds. A bit faster - I think 200-300 kilobits/sec if you're REALLY lucky.
Right. EDGE is 2G technology. Not much good for web 2.0 stuff or streaming.

Would the 3g data be HSPA+ and how good are the speeds? I have the GS2 on Sprint and my contract is up in September. I'm thinking about going to Straight Talk with a used ATT or TMO GS2. Just wondering which phone would be the best choice.
the 3g data is HSPA+ with straight talk. I switched over from a verizon galaxy nexus and i can say that the HSPA+ speed here is comparable to the Verizon 4g LTE speed, but the signal strength is not near as good.
If im outside, i get about 7 meg down and 1-2 meg up on my at&t i777 (straight talk) and i get 4-6 meg down and .7 - 1 meg up on my 4gLTE Gnex.
Indoors, my GSM signal suffers whereas my CDMA signal does not. Speed not that big of difference, just hard to keep a steady signal with my GSM phones.
Either way, a GREAT deal on straight talk... They say its unlimited but they will call you if you have excessive use (250-500'ish megs in a day or some say over 2gb in a month) and some have said they will deactivate your sim, but i havent had that issue yet.
Great info. Thank you. Somehow the guy at my local Sprint store got me a 25% discount last September when I bought my GS2 for being an employee of Boeing. Thing is I don't work for Boeing and never have. The 3g is horrible and I really don't want to sign another contract with Sprint. It's a decent deal now with the discount but if corporate catches on and takes that away, I'm stuck with it. I thought about the GSM Gnex for $350 from Google, but it really isn't the phone I want. I might wait until the next Nexus arrives. Rumors are we'll see one in early November.
Honestly, this thread should be a sticky. I'm sick and tired of people posting this same exact thing weekly!!!!!!!

NO
So, we just have to wait for the hack to get it working on Sprint? Too bad we can't just shove a sim in and have it work like it does on AT&T and Tmobile. But, I'm sure the wizards here on xda will have a Sprint hack for it shortly...
I don't think its that easy haha

Hmm... No offense, but I have a sprint phone and sprint service yet I use only Verizon towers using a very simple hack. So, I can verify sprint and Verizon use absolutely the same radios. All my phone calls and 3G data go over Verizon and at 10 times the speed. When I remove the hack and go back to Sprint towers, my data slows down by 10 times and my call quality goes down. Now, I realize they use different frequencies for LTE, but Sprint has hardly any usable LTE anyway and where I live, I will be the very last to get LTE on Sprint if at all.

are you sure you are using verizon towers. From what I've heard, if on sprint and >50% of your usage is in roaming for 2 months, they will end your service.
Also, sprint phones with lte use embedded sims, I think they are device specific, but maybe not. But how are you going to get that sprint sim, and no promises that the sprint sim will be recognized by the verizon phone.

Yes, I've been using Verizon towers for almost a year now, but I'm very careful to not go over 1GB data per month. Most of my data is over WiFi, and then use Verizon 3G when not near WiFi. My phone roamed over 50% of the time before I did the hack anyway. I do all app downloads and upgrades over WiFi only. Anyway, if Sprint does use an embedded sim, then maybe it's not possible, just seems like there should be a way because Verizon and Sprint both use compatible CDMA and 2G/3G Radios.

But with the way CDMA works with Sprint and Verizon, the phone has to be added to the carrier's device database in order to natively work on the network (and not be forced into roaming via a hack). Sprint won't add a Verizon phone to their database, nor will Verizon add a Sprint phone to their database. That's the main reason it won't work through legitimate means (and, as already mentioned, they use different LTE bands, so LTE won't work either).
So, in reality, there's no legal way to get the DNA fully working on Sprint.

sick of sprint

So I bought this LTE EVO 4g for lte.. I pay 10 dollars for premium data service and well all I get is 3g ..my bill for one line is roughly 100 dollars a month.. so my girl has straight talk and pays 45 unlimited a month.. well I'm ready to jump ship and I was wondering if I can one get me off the cheap way sprint contract and 2 use my LTE EVO for straight talk?
I think straight talk uses AT&T bands (gsm) so the Evo LTE wouldn't work because it uses cdma bands. It WILL work on Boost though. If you must use Straight Talk, then sell your Evo and buy a One X or One of XL.

Straight Talk uses several carries, including SPRINT, ATT, and VERIZON. How do i know this you ask; well I sell them as part of my job. Straight Talk is working hard on making it easy to bring your own phone and activate service through them. In a few months (subject to change) The system should be in place to bring any cdma phone to straight talk. Currently at the store i work at, all of our straight talk phones go off verizon. Some stores have ones that go off ATT or Sprint, so you need to be careful in which phone you select.

I am in a same boat. Struggling with unusable speeds, while my friends with t-mobile's "wannabe" 4G are getting 14mbps down and 3 mbps up. Faster than LTE in 2 spots that I was able to get it.
I thought of using Verizon PRL and force Sprint to boot me off their network, but I called them, gave them all of my complaints, and hoping they could help me. I was with them for 11 years, so maybe they will take it into account.
The verizon prl is the best solution. Because the only thing they are gonna take into account is the fact that right now they are making a ton of money off you. If you wanna try to flash your phone to verizon or pageplus you won't be disappointed. If you need 4g and live in good tmobile coverage area then selling your device after you get kicked off sprint is a good idea.

I actually left straight talk with the BYOP program (Nexus 4) I had the AT&T sim, which was all fine and dandy until about the second of January. It seemed like all of my towers were either down or just working very poorly. I also got throttled after streaming ONE youtube video during my month (I'm on wifi otherwise) so trust me, you WILL get throttled on ST. I also had problems with the phone not connecting to towers for literally an entire day, and when people tried calling me it said my phone was "disconnected" even though I paid for service 3 months in advance.
My personal opinion is to avoid them, but it really is up to you what you want to deal with. My data with ST was way faster than with sprint, but all I use my phone for is streaming music, which Sprint's 3G can handle rather easily where I live. I would recommend flashing to boost, same phone, speed, and a lower price. Plus you actually know at what point you'll be throttled.
Also, before anybody says anything, I also tried a tmo sim and had the same issues. I get great tmo and AT&T reception where I live also. It seems to me they're cheaping out on their towers.
just my 2 cents.

This seems hit or miss..I've read reports of people roaming multiple gigabytes and getting no warning while I went just over 300mbs twice and got the letter. Good luck getting out if that's what you so desire. Some will give you flack for this method, but I support you. Sprint advertises "normal" 3G speeds, but for a portion of us the speeds are dismal. Lol Ive dealt with their horrible data speeds for so long it doesn't even bother me. And paying the extra $10 for data when I only picked up wimax when I was in Albany and it wasn't even that good there was annoying but I sucked it up. They advertise it typically on their iPhone commercials, and that was certainly true before iPhone 5.
All GSM networks can talk and surf at the same time. All networks can talk and surf if backed up by data network (LTE/wimax or WiFi). But CDMA networks such as Verizon and Sprint, without backup data connection, it's Evo LTE and maybe Droid DNA are the only phones that can talk and surf at the same time.

Not quite true, did you know that the iphone 5 on sprint/verizon can't do voice and data at the same time even while on lte? Also, did you know that the evo lte, gs3, viper 4g can also do voice and data simultaneously over 3g and not just lte? Like someone else said, its called svdo. Not every lte phone is capable of svdo but there are a few that are and what determines svdo capabilities is the chip/radio design in the phone and not on the network side.

So, if possible, why wouldn't Apple install the chip/radio possible of doing simultaneous voice and data on the Verizon and Sprint versions of all the iPhones since they did on all of the AT&T versions? Seems like a no-brainer for Apple to do that, and make their iPhone stand out amongst all other phones. Also, why only do it for AT&T versions and not Sprint and Verizon? Just seems like a stupid business/marketing decision Apple made, if it is possible and they just chose not to...
Also, so the GS3 can do simultaneous voice and data over 3G on all of the carriers that it's offered on? That's very interesting, because I had no idea! I thought that it was something only possible on newer Android phones when connected to LTE. I have never known that it has been possible for a while on Android with the right chip/radio. Why wouldn't manufacturers do this sooner!? Why did multiple manufacturers suddenly decide to do this to their phones around the same time? Just seems crazy to me! If I was HTC, I would have been putting this chip/radio in for a while now, as something to make them stand out against other Android phones! Seems like a very obvious marketing strategy!!

The iphone on att has been able to talk and surf at the same time because thats how gsm works. For a cdma phone to do talk and surf at the same time u need a dedicated internet source or an svdo radio installed in the phone. My guess is apples proprietary hw wouldnt work with an svdo radio on sprint/verizon. Or they just simply didnt want to include it.

Cool. Thanks. Yea, I knew that the iphone on AT&T has been capable of this for a while now. I thought that all GSM networks were capable of this. After reading themuffinman's post, I thought he was saying that it was all up to the phone itself and didn't rely on the network at all. That would mean that a GSM network wasn't always capable of doing this, but if the phone was capable THEN it was possible. After reading your post, then re-reading his post; I think what he was saying is that CDMA networks couldn't do this if the phone isn't made capable, and not that GSM networks couldn't if the phone wasn't capable. Now that makes sense to me, and is how I've always thought that it worked.

Because the Qualcomm chip that enables svdo on cdma networks wasn't out yet. It made its first appearance on the LG Viper 4G. Once the chip became available only then could manufacturers add it on. Like Evo lte and GS3. You see how Samsung decided to go with their Exynos quadcore in the Note 2 and because of it unlike the S3 we have no svdo.

I forget who but I just laugh at the one who doesn't understand why apple wouldn't do it for all phones, its bad marketing.
HELLO its apple after all lol
Not being mean, please don't take it that way, just saying
RootBox EVO LTE 4.2 Baby!
IMO it's because apple likes to leave things out so they can put them in the next version. That way they can tout it as a 'new' feature (new to them at least) and the sheep will buy in.
Remember how the original Iphone didn't have 3g?

This probably wasn't so much an Apple decision as it was an AT&T decision. AT&T has been hit hard ever since they lost the iPhone exclusivity in the states, they want to milk it for all its worth. Apple doesn't do the "leave a feature out" bit on purpose.
The original iPhone did not have 3G because 3G wasn't nearly as ubiquitous as it is now. Well, I say "as it is now" but then I look at my phone right now and I see that I'm on 1X anyway. Not many people even realize that when the first iPhone came out, smartphones weren't seen as the multi-purpose machines that they are now. Hell, the first few revisions of iOS weren't even designed with the idea of third-party apps at all. We've come a long way since then.
We could also be called "sheep" as well, you know, we keep buying into more and more powerful Android phones with insane processors and ridiculous GPUs but it wasn't until Android 4.2 that the UI is as consistently 60FPS-smooth as an iPhone that has half (if not less) the processing power. Just saying, you should keep an open unbiased mind, that's what separates you from the fanboy-lusting Android people who froth at the mouth when Apple is mentioned and mature, logical, and reasonable adults. (not accusing anyone of the former)
Afaik all iPhones are identical internally across all carriers regardless of gsm/cdma...only reason a att iPhone won't work on sprint is bc sprint won't allow it ...they won't even allow an unlocked phone on the network even though it is perfectly capable of it ..

Well, due to the nature of CDMA and ESNs, you can't actually "unlock" a CDMA phone (unless someone would like to correct me).

Not entirely true there.... Chips were out that could support it before the Viper...
Hence the Thunderbolt had it with the addition of an extra modem on board on the MDM9600, which was used for evdo data, and let the MSM8655 handle the 1x cdma voice connection....bringing you svdo... Now sprint had no need for the extra MDM chip like Verizon did back then as its main purpose was for LTE connectivity... Not worth adding the extra modem back then just for svdo...

Tmobile here I come

After bricking my note I called att used early upgrade to get s4 while my note gets fixed, jtaged... log story short I compared att and tmobile and realized for my wife and i we are paying $150/month att and tmobile should be $75/mn after 15% work discount. So I called att cancelled s4(thank god still boot loader locked, and htc one better).
The reason i share all this with all of you is I believe some of you may be in same boat. I came to at&t for lte. I'm paying premium for that service. From research I've done I can pay half as much on tmobile for speeds around 10-25mb. That is to much savings for me to pass up on. I'm buying nexus from play store from now on and staying on tmobile.
BTW: my nexus was $349 for bigger memory version, s4 would have cost me $200 plus 2 years at $75 more which would have been a $2000 phone!!!!!! Nexus 4 is 90% or more as good which much better roms and support!
Edit: wanted to add.. two new phones on att plus 2 year agreement is $400 phones, plus $1800 more than tmobile. Two nexus $700. Tmobile savings over two years $1500.

For my part, I say Thank you for this. I'm on both networks right now, owing only to a remaining AT&T contract, and T-Mobile's network, service and support are significantly better. T-Mobile's CALL CENTERS still suck, but their online "T-Force" support team is superb... absolutely superb.
Thanks for rubbing it in guys! I'm stuck like chuck with att. I live close to lake erie and Tmobile doesn't work here. Att barely works here at all but they gave me a Microcell which hooks up to the net and gives me 5 bars signal throughout my house. I wish Tmobile had something like this. I've tried getting a friends tmobile phone onto my microcell but no go.

When I had TMo some time ago I was able to make wifi calls without a microcell. Not sure if they still do that.

That is some VERY good information !!! Thank you VERY VERY much!!!!! My contract is up in October and att will probably be kicked to the curb!
I'm curious though, will my phone battery deplete with no cell signal, only wifi? I don't want it searching for cell signal that's not there draining my battery.

What Is your T-Mobile data speed?
To the other guy, T-Mobile does have native voip calling. I seen it while researching. They use an app to call and text over WiFi should you be unfortunate enough to be in an area with no or poor service.
I'm excited for nexus 5 which will be same time I'll be converting over. Till then Jamie keeps my note fresh and fun!

FYI the "Wifi calling" feature is only available on branded phones (i.e ones with T-Mobile logo/apps pre-installed). So if you get a Nexus 4, it does not have it built in.

There's been a few t mobile uvlg3 roms that have the tmobile wifi calling app built in. Same rom from tmobiles original note. Used it and it worked fine.
I myself have setup google voice to use wifi, and cellular over grooveip( google chat) and pbxes.org if need be. That's since I use google voice as my main number though.
Been T-Mobile since forever. The fact this og note will get LTE on T-Mobile excites me even more.
On the blaze modem I've got 10-15mbps.
On the stock att modem, I pull 6-10mbps on tmobiles refarming.

Thank you for the information. I consider under 5mb speed slow. I can handle medium speed such as that. Looks like I'll be going blaze in couple months. Thanks. I googled voip.on mobile and a few good setups pop up.
