J Ok so in my never ending struggle against the Evil Eclair/T-Mo/HTC NAND Protection and the Futility of Trying to flash a ROM With the "Supposed AndRoot QuIck Root Method" As well as a fine point from Nbetcher that the Engineering build must be flashed because Android has NAND protection while running. I have devised my own "No PC ROOT Method!!!"
Required Files (Tested For MT3G SLIDE Latest OTA Unrooted Stock)
1.Download Androot From Location of Choosing (I'm Using Version 1.6.2)
2.Download ESPRIMG.zip (ENG build)
3.Download SlideEng-Package.zip
4.Download Custom Rom Of Your Choosing(Mine Is CM 6.1.1 Stable)
5.Download Android Terminal Emulator(From Market)
6.Download Root Explorer Android (Requires Root) (From Market Or Some Place Online)
7.Download File Explorer (Dev:Adao Team)(From Android Market)
8.Download Latest Clockwork Recovery(I Used 2.5.0.1)

Also Before anyone says I repped someone off remeber I accidentally discovered this using 2 failed methods because they essentially cancel each other out.(The Latter Nbetchers works just not after the AndRoot One)!!!
So...
1st Download/Install all needed files from market( File Manager Android Terminal Emulator)
2nd Download all zip images, Recoveries, Roms, apps from phone browser Directly To SD ROOT(Google em until I get links up on Dev Forum)
3rd. Unzip SlideEng-Package.zip To Root using File Manager or Other Zip Program for android(Andro-Zip Works Well)
4th Change Name of Clockwork to Update.zip(Case Sensative)
5th Install AndRoot And Run Root Me With Install Su & Temp Root/Unroot After Reboot Selected(Or Else You Will Boot Loop)
6th Install And Run Root Explorer then Copy and paste flash_img and mtd0.img to /data/local on android device by multi-select copy then RM R/W in program in upper left on data local folder.
7th IMPORTANT!!! Long Press and hold each copied file and set permissions to allow read and write on both user and the lowest option (I Think Dev or system)
8th Run Android Terminal Emulator and type the following commands verbatim spaces included Pressing enter after each line($ n # will be there provided you follwed all steps if not go back to androot and root again):
$ su
# cd /data/local
# chmod 04755 flash_image
# ./flash_image misc mtd0.img
Now power off and reboot using VOL-DOWN + POWER
It'll reboot into the HBoot Screen and ask if you want to Check ESPRIMG.zip after Verifying it will ask you to flash Select Yes (VOL-UP) And Wait DO NOT POWER DOWN OR TAKE OUT BATTERY!!!
Once its Completed it will ask you to Reboot select no Instead and Go To Recovery
Now Select APPLY Update.zip to flash CLOCKWORK RECOVERY YAY!!! :-D Now We Can Flash a Custom Rom With Root and Even Go As Far As S-OFF!!! But Please Be Sure Its Already On Your Micro SD...
Select Wipe Data Factory Reset by Scrolling with VOL- UP/DOWN or Track Pad and Use Power/Trackpad TO Select.
Now Use Install Zip from SD Card to Install Custom Rom(Flash GApps Second if downloaded and desired if using CM Mod 6.1.1) Now Reboot And Enjoy!!! If you Wanna Flash Anything Else Use Rom Manager From Market and Som Custom Roms to Boot into Clockwork!!! Thanks to all the Devs and their tools and immense knowledge for Making this Possible! Thanks To All The ROM Chefs Too!!!

Edit:nvm, ill try it when i get my replacement slide.
I don't think the slide needs S-OFF to write to data but I do think it needs root beforehand, or at least shell root.
just to make it easier to anyone flashing this, i would put links to DL's of those files. first thing i noticed when i read. put me off to this method.

I don't think so? If /data couldn't be written to without root or s-off, how would people install apps who never rooted their phones? Where is the system data stored and modified? /data is fully modifiable I'm pretty sure.
I'm willing to admit I could be wrong on that but I thought apps were installed in /data because it was the system calling the package installer not the user.

In terms of read/write permissions, the system has the same permissions as the user. The system can't write to /system if the user can't, and vice versa. /data and /cache have no nand protection

In the post I did add if I had the time I would post links if not ill do it later to whomever above stated their statement. If you don't want to "Try" it don't and don't comment. It was an accident I found it and I have since replicated my process on 3 slides and it works. The Reason it does is because gaining temporary root inside android even without gaining full being blocked by nand or S-Off can be can be used to modify the permissions of system files while the memory is running tho not the actual NAND itself which I believe S-OFF does... So when I said 6th mount the drive as R/W in root explorer there is an option to remount the drive R/W to allow you to long press the items in that folder and change their permissions then I said unmount to save the permission fix that's what the Temp Root Gained from AndRoot Does.... Now I'm gonna try and update my Original post with links for people who want an esier time doing this like I would have liked and for the. Sarcastic ones so then you can just press the Thumbs Up button ok?

Your instructions don't have anything to do with /system I don't know what you are babbling about. I'm not disproving your root method, I was just trying to explain that /data is not nand protected. /system IS nand protected, and without s-off or a r/w overlay you wouldn't even be able to modify the permissions of files in /system, but since your root method has to do with /data it works.

I'm not babbling I was referring to the first reply but ur probably right about the sys files as I didn't mess with them. But I did obtain root anway all of the files can easily be found by doing a search on the XDA forums and ill add the links when I get to a pc doing this from the android browser is painful...

The only thing about 4shared is that it doesn't work right on the stock HTC web browser, since javascript is kinda glitchy on that one. Works fine on froyo/cm6.1.1 with the aosp browser, but for a TRUE pcless method you need direct or mediafire links I think.
I post links because everyone *****es and yet someone still *****es. Those aren't my uploads, I simply posted them so people would stop *****ing. I personally haven't had issues with 4shared even with the stock browser back before I rooted my phone. If you want to reupload them to another hosting site be my guest but like I said, they aren't my uploads.

HI all I have my Eris flashed to Cricket or Metro PCS, and I want to put a new rom on it. The guy who flashed it put a 2.1 update on it for me and told me he couldn't add the rom I gave him on my phone because it was flashed. So my question is am I stuck with the version I'm running or can I load different custom roms along with it being flashed??

i have mine flashed to cricket. and I have changed to several roms, i of course was able to root the phone. so if yours is rooted then you should be able to switch roms.. i am not expert so if i am wrong please somebody correct me

power off your phone, once off, hold the volume down key while you press the power button if you see a recovery menu telling you, reboot, install from sd card, wipe etc.. then all you do is wipe the data and then install the rom...
but the main thing is to know that you have root access and recovery image
It will not erase what was written with QPST but the proxy will have to be setup again. I use many roms and just run the same setup for getting the proxy on there working.

jcaff77's advice is missing a whole lot.
YES, Before you flash ANY ROM, boot into Recovery (power off your phone, then power it on with Volume Up + Power) then go to Backup/Restore, then do a nand backup.
THIS way, you can ALWAYS go back to the flash that you're on. The guy that gave you that flash has NO idea what he's doing, and shouldn't be charging people money to flash things. Tell him he's basically a hack and a con artist because the information to do this is FREE and ALL around the internet. Tell him you're never going to ask for his help again, because he didn't really help you, he just took your money.
Anyway,
I posted a full tutorial that token419 from HowardForums put together to do this to ANY ROM. Your phone will stay on Cricket in general through flashing ROMs, but to make ANY ROM work FULLY on Cricket, follow this:

Following Brandon's Guide and replace the internet portion with the steps listed below
Step 2. Setting up
What you need: u2nl.zip from white rabbits site whiterabbit.org
install Autostart (Root) from android market
Unzip the u2nl.zip to your androidsdk/tools folder so that u2nl and autostart.sh are in your androidsdk/tools folder. (use the autostart.sh that's in the Eris folder, not the one in the Droid folder!)
adb shell su
(look on phone to push 'Allow' or 'Always Allow' if it pops up - if not, then move to the next line)
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /data/
mkdir opt
chmod 0777 /data/opt/
chmod 0777 /system/bin/
exit
adb remount
adb push autostart.sh /data/opt/autostart.sh

click always allow on the prompt to allow the Autostart app to run at system startup
Reply or PM me if you need help with it especially. Go ahead and flash a ROM with it. If you can't get all of this done, your phone will STILL WORK, just not all the apps, Browser Only. For a temporary Browser Only fix, just download AnyCut from the Market on your current phone flash, use AndroZip or ES File Explorer or IO File Manager or ANY program that can 'back up' apps, to back it up, then flash the NEW ROM you want, and Market won't work (until you do the instructions above). Again, to get Web to work, make a shortcut with AnyCut > Activity > Proxy, and click the Proxy shortcut you made. Set Proxy to wap.mycricket.com port 8080.
Like I said, I'll follow this thread, so just reply if you get stuck on any of those steps.

You'll also want to make sure you extract your telephony.db from /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/ to maintain MMS functionality with a new ROM, since the ROMs you'll use will probably be built for Sprint or Verizon.
You'll need RootExplorer on your phone to go to the above directory -> copy -> paste to your sdcard. Restore it to the same directory once you're new ROM is installed OR download and setup AndroidSDK (google it) and use adb to pull the file;

The file will end up in your /tools/ directory of the AndroidSDK.
Once you're new ROM is installed, you can use the SDK to push it back as well;

Actually, APN Backup & Restore already does this job.
If you use mak's way, you won't be needing APN Backup & Restore.

Was APN Backup suggested previously? I didn't notice if it had been, sorry.
I also can't speak to the validity of a program I've never used, but I suppose it would be much easier for the OP to use that than adb.

The MMS flashes the APNs, but the APN has to be specific for your phone number on your device (in my experience), so I wouldn't expect MMS to work for anyone but you, Token!
I'd stick with editing the APNs to get MMS working, but thanks for the internet patch!

So after digging around somewhat I found an over sight that HTC might use later for system updates via /vendor/bin, who knows at this point though... Anyways, after amount of time the SU Binary along with busybox links if be in system/bin or /system/xbin gets deleted / removed..
Now, what I did was enable the $Path to /vendor/bin which is in the Sensation export PATH..
Any Calls made from this point either be SU or Busybox don't get deleted nor touched from any App requesting the SU Binary!! I've tested this with alot of apps & the Root sticks in place..
Other than Reboot, it might as well be a Perma-Temp-Root!!
Downloading now!!! Can't wait to test it!

Rooted perfectly, opened and closed Titanium Backup several times with no force closes or loss of su, Barnacle is perfect, Wireless tether is granted su but the kernel doesn't support it, screenshot gained su also but the screenshots were smeared colors. Drocap2 takes perfect screenies though. Gonna try a few more root apps before bed and play some more when I wake up to verify it lasts.

How is removing anything from /system/app gonna stick?
This worked perfect for me. No problems with it. Wifi tether won't work for me, but barnacle tether works perfectly. Drocap2 is taking perfect screen shots for me as well, where as before the images would be all distorted and what not.
Made some changes to the .bat since I don't necessarily want to disable all of that yet, but it works, this is the longest superuser has worked for me so far on the EVO 3D.

Is anybody able to root the E3D with this method? I tried twice and it failed both times. I will do again by restart my pc and E3D.

It won't stick, but after you reboot you run the batch program again and the apps are removed again until your next reboot.

a .bat file is just a text document that is executed in command prompt. If you are familiar with cmd just open the file in notepad, delete any commands you don't want executed, save.

Not through a full reboot....no you will have to run the batch file again (even says so in the OP). However, the other root methods would crash periodically even without a reboot or would last but not give you access to the majority of your root apps. This is the closest yet to a feasible root solution.
mine doesnt get past daemon started successfully i have usb debugging on
so if i downloaded and installed some apps that require root,
and i reboot, what happens to them ?
they will work after running the bat file again ?
or they will have to be installed again to work properly ?

They will work after running the .bat file again. You shouldn't need to uninstall and reinstall them. Super User may need to be uninstalled before running the .bat file again, if it gives you any force closes.

OK... I have my Atrix Unlocked, Rooted and up on 2.3.4(4.5.91) Life is Good, however...
I am attempting to get the CWM (ROMRacers) onto my system so I can do the backups again and mess with the other ROM's. However, I am getting the same issue as a few others are, I go into Clockwork and tell it to load a ROM or just to backup and it puts me into the Android Recovery and not CWM. It seems that the install-recovery.sh file is the issue. I cannot remove/move/rename it with the SuperUser enabled ES File Explorer or other apps. Is there an adb shell command string I can use to do this? I am not familiar enough with it to want to just start slashing it without having the safety net of CWM in place.
I searched and came up with this nexus thread about deleting the file

But if you are too cheap to buy root explorer like myself, es file explorer from the market does the same thing but it's free..
Settings> Mount /system as writable" and you are good to go.
OK.. was able to delete the file. Now to get it to play nice with CWM's low level.
Got it and was successful with a backup. Next (not right now) is to test the restore before I get stupid with a different ROM. I like where I am and will revert if the others are not to my liking...
Why? because it is not Steve's toy I am renting and I can!

New *registered* user here! I've been frantically sifting through post after post on the forums all night hoping to get some help with an issue I am having on my Vibrant.
Goal:
Remove some bloatware ONLY, not looking to install any ROMs or modify the phone too much...just clean some annoying apps and icons off.
Phone Information:
Model SGH-T959
Firmware 2.2
Baseband T959UVKB5
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Build FROYO.UVKB5
I currently have the latest version of Java, Android SDK, and SuperOneClick installed.
Install directory of AndroidSDK:
C:\AndroidSDK
My method of failure:
Open SuperOneClick, Click "Root"
Start, Run, "CMD"
cd c:\AndroidSDK\tools
adb shell
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/st19/system
This is where it fails and I run into an endless loop of it telling me the proper usage of the "mount" command. I thought I had it at one point but when I typed: rm /system/AmazonMp3.apk all it did was tell me that it was a read-only file and that it couldn't be deleted.
Can someone help lead me in the right direction of what I am doing wrong? I rooted and removed all bloatware about a year ago but I just did an upgrade through MiniKies to the latest version of firmware and I can't seem to remember the process I went through that long ago to get it done right.
I apologize for possibly asking a question that has been asked numerous times but I just couldn't seem to get the wording right to get any helpful results in the search of the forums. Thank you so much for the time in reading this and the future help if any can be provided. Have a great night!!!
It looks like you are in the wrong directory. Open a command prompt in
C:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools
Open the platform tools folder. Click on a blank space > hold down the shift key > hit right click > select open command window here. Then enter the commands:
adb devices "to check if your device is connected. also make sure usb debugging is enabled on your phone.
adb remount
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/stl5 /system
rm -r /system/app/[AppName].apk
If you want a list of all your /system/apps enter this command
cd /system/app
ls *.apk
This is much easier if you download rom toolbox from the market. All you do is go to /system/app and delete whatever bloatware you dont want.
BUT BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN DELETING SYSTEM APPS. ONLY DELETE WHAT YOU KNOW IS BLOATWARE OTHERWISE YOU WILL GET FC'S

Would I still need to follow the steps prior to that and use SuperOneClick to root the device or do I just skip that process and go straight to the cmd prompt?
Also, I followed a tutorial I found for installing the Android SDK that informed me to copy all the files from android-tools to the tools directory and use that instead but I don't know what the use in that is except for maybe a smaller directory name?
EDIT: I tried what you said with and with using SuperOneClick prior to the procedure and the cmd prompt displayed the following text:
*opened cmd promt in C:\AndroidSDK\tools (no files in platform-tools anymore)*
adb devices (it found my device connected)
adb remount (adb remount: no such file or directory exists)
The adb shell and su commands works fine BUT I still hit the endless loop of it trying to explain to me the "usage" of the mount command.
I will look into Rom toolbox as I'm trying to figure this out as well. Thank you.
I strongly recommend you download root explorer or some similar root browser app. Of course though your phone must be rooted. Just try rom toolbox. It has its own root browser within the app along with other useful features. This is probably the easiest way to uninstall the bloatware in your case since you are having issues with adb.

Okay, I have the suggested "rom toolbox" downloaded from the market and I will try to use that but SuperOneClick does not root the phone deep enough for rom toolbox to see the phone as rooted so...will the "updated.zip" method work for this instead?
I haven't tried it before but I am willing to give it a go if you think it's the best method. If this is the method you recommend, would you happen to have a link to the most recent or atleast most trusted updated.zip rooting method?

So I downloaded the one click program you suggested and the program itself seems to bee pretty straight forward.
I connected phone to computer with debugging on. Opened program and hit one click root. It started doing it's thing...phone rebooted and went into recovery. I started to follow instructions up until I got to where it said install packages. When I clicked it, the phone said installation failed no such file our directory exists.
The phone is looking for the updated.zip file but none exists in the one click folder. There is a root.zip and an unroot.zip...do I need to rename one of them to proceed???
Thank you so much for all the help so far, I feel like I'm so close but just not there yet. You have been an incredible help!

The way (Stock) Recovery works is if you are not "Install from SD" then it will look for the file labeled Update.zip. So you can rename only the Root.zip to Update.zip and make sure that is the only thing on your internal SD labeled that or with .zip Put the unroot.zip in a folder for now. Then try again.
Alright, will give that a try when I get home. I thought I read that the program copied the update.zip file to the phone during it's process so I didn't want to do anything to work against that. I will rename one of the files, copy it to the phone and give the one click root another shot. Thank you!

There is no need to rename anything. The program does it all for you. Play close attention to the first screen (green one) if it says update.zip copied successfully it will then reboot your phone to stock recovery. Once you are in stock recovery all you do is click reinstall packages. Keep clicking reinstall packages even if it reboots the first time. To prove my point mount your phone to your pc and check to see if the update.zip is copied onto the root of your into storage. If not well copy the update.zip from the last guide i suggested from above.
Also check to see if the superuser app is installed on your phone. The program also installs that along with the update.zip. If you have superuser then go to the market download rom manager so you could download CWM.

Alright, so I tried it again once I got home. Didn't work BUT I did see that update.zip was installed into my phone. The sig verification failed, which means I need to change recovery versions to the one that skips sig verification correct?
I'll go search the forums for that since I remember seeing that a little while ago but that is the correct path I need to take at this point in time am I right?

You can pull the CWR from my signature. Same as before. Put it on your internal labeled update.zip, boot into recovery and and scroll down to Reinstall Packages. Hit it. It will cycle and probably come back to stock recovery. Hit Reinstall Packages again and the stock recovery will go from blue to green (CWR).
Side note, probably from there you will be able to install the Superuser update.zip. Just go to Install from SD card and find it and hit it. The reboot. Might not but the CWR instructions above shoudl work for you.
Well I changed the recovery version using the file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423 and then used the OneClickRoot and was able to get the update installed (I think). The phone booted up normally, I noticed that SU Permissions was installed so I figure I am rooted correct? WRONG. Rom toolbox says I am not. Is there another way to verify? Should I reinstall Rom toolbox incase it's just bugging out on me?
So I tried using Rom Manager too. Looks as tho SU is not installed correctly, will have to try again I guess.
Cannot install CWR, tried and the recovery text stays blue even after 14 times of reinstalling packages...
This phone will be sent flying across the room sometime tonight I'm guessing. About to erase the entire thing and try starting from scratch again. (Start from Eclair and work my way up maybe)
If you are willing to start from Eclair it would be soooo much easier that all this stuff.
Odin to stock, flash CWR from my signature, go from blue to green and then flash Fishman's Bionix and you are good to go. Simple and way easier than all this mess. Just download Fish's and put it on you SD card somewhere you'll remember. Once in green recovery just scroll to that ROM and flash it per OP.
We've just been trying to Root you since on your OP you said you didn't want to flash a custom ROM.
Well...I'm still trying to avoid flashing Roms (I've upgraded through MiniKies and that's it).
I've only been trying to root just to clean bloatware off but it seems that I must be lacking the technical skills to follow instrcutions properly....nothing is cooperating and even after following all steps nothing wants to work like it should.
Grrrr! One last try to get CWR working before I lose my mind and need to take a break/walk away for a bit.
Ok, so I'm currently back to stock Eclair (ew!!) and about to boot to recovery to install CWR. Wish me luck on that one....

Yes and are pre-Rooted. Put the ROM.zip on either card. I have a folder that I use. Boot into recovery and get green recovery back. Go to install from SD, find the ROM and flash it per the OP instructions.
Bloat free, pre-Rooted and usually has Voodoo so you can get Voodoo Sound from the market and have a sonic ear-gasm.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the help! I installed the suggested ROM last night and I am very happy with the results thus far. It was alot easier than I thought it would be. Flashing a ROM was MUCH more simpler than the root only decision. Thank you again!
Since removing ads from browser and apps was one of the main reasons to root my DX I decided to make this tutorial. Problem is you can't just install AdAway (link) and run it because after a reboot you'll have to do it again. This method is keeping the ads away even after a reboot. Remember that you'll have to update AdAway-hosts files regularly.
All credits go to Yasir Javed Ansari. I only finetuned the method he described a little bit. Because his post is somewhere in another thread it seemed right to make a tutorial for it in the themes and apps section.
First of all you'll need a properly rooted DX with superuser 3.1.3 installed. See here for a zip to install superuser and busybox or here to download a pre-rooted 1.18 stock deodexed rom with superuser and busybux installed provided by infernal77. I'm using this rom on my DX and removed a lot of bloatware with Aroma (link) right after flashing the rom. Credits go to merovig for sharing info about flashable superuser/busybox-zip and Aroma and of course to infernal77 for providing his deodexed stock rom. Although it seems that this method shouldn't be necessary when using a deodexed rom I couldn't get it to work without using the command lines, so I decided to share it anyway.
In settings - power, uncheck 'fast boot'.
Install AdAway from Play Store. Run AdAway (don't download hosts files yet) and go to settings - preferences. Check 'allow redirections' and under 'target hosts file' select '/data/data/hosts'.
Reboot to recovery and then mount /system and mount /data.
While in recovery-mode connect the device to a PC and open a command prompt.
Type:
adb shell
cd system/etc
rm hosts
ln -s /data/data/hosts hosts
Disconnect the device from PC and reboot.
Now you can run AdAway: download files and apply ad blocking.
Done!

Above is required for Stock Rom which is rooted.
On custom and rooted Rom , you don't need to perform above steps as system is write permitted so running ad away normally works fine.

Problem is that when I install for example infernals rooted stock deodexed rom, and then I install AdAway and hosts files, they don't survive a reboot. When I redirect the hosts file to /data/data/hosts AdAway states it can't create the symlink. That's why I still use your method even on a pre-rooted rom.

I don't know, after all I'm an amateur, but the problem nightcrow described about how stuff goes back to stock after a reboot is something that happens a lot with the DX's - same thing with the bloatware. I had to remove the bloat apps from a rom.zip and flash that to avoid the problem. Seems to me there is some kind of security built in that goes beyond the norm. Otherwise I don't see why apps like Titanium work to remove apps (even after reboot) for example on most other phones, but not the DX.
Meherzad, I followed the instructions posted by nightcrow and it works for me ... try again, reboot and open an app you know normally has ads to check if it works.
Failed first time (forgot to uncheck fast boot:banghead. Reinstalled and did everything again, now works flawlesly.

you can do same in advanced-> execute command (or maybe shell - do not remember the exact naming)
adb was not working for me, too.

If you'll not access recovery... when you need recovery, turn fast boot off...
