The default apps tray has multiple windows that slide. Just like your home screens. I'm not 100% sure but I think the only thing from stopping you installing infinite apps is the memory of the device.
i.e. the only limitation you will hit is a hardware limitation. There is no software limitation.

I see a lot of talk about the memory and how much is available. but I was wondering about installation of apps-
1, Where are they installed to?
2. How much room is there for them?
3. Is this shared with the RAM memory?
I'm keen to upgrade to an Android phone, but if the app storage is small then this would put me off.
So far app storage for me has not been a problem and I have been downloading a few. I have 102MB still free. Not sure how much was there to begin with though...
The memory for app storage is separate from the RAM - like it should be on WiMo and Symbian handsets.
If you root the Hero you can store apps on the SD card, though I have not done this.
I think unless you go on a download frenzy, you will be fine.
Most apps will allow storage of their cache / data on the SD in their settings menu - such as FeedR (RSS feed app), Twidroid (Twitter app) etc.
it really is nothing to worry about...i had to test a magic for my work a few months ago and one of the tests was to fill the internal memory and then try and use the phone...they'd had issues with windows mobile obviously....and it took over 130 apps installed before it got anywhere near full and still it worked fine for standard use.
seriously, unless you are installing EVERYTHING, then you'll be fine!

I can't understand something on android system.
When I boot my mini pro, I can see in a (for example) Open Advanced Task Killer lot of aps.. (see attachment)
Now I see Skype in a list of active processes. I do not understand is it now skype active and loaded in system? I asked this because I'm not signed in to skype, and it is configured to not loaded when system boot.
If not in which state are now all this apps?
I have same questions for other few programs, for example Samba file sharing. It is disabled in his config. I mean apk is not freezed. But it is loaded in processes list!
I see that all those aps eat memory, so y question is, is there any solution to disable this aps and load it only when I want to use it, and when I closed them to stayed disable!

this app are in background.. it dosent effect much your system.. usually it is automatically loaded.. just kill/forcekill the app if you need more memory...
Nothing wrong with it, these programs just autorun in background for functionality purposes.
When you actually start using an app, android will automatically free up memory to make that app work.

I think you didn't understand me..
These aps using my memory even they are not started and active..
That is the confusion at me!
like i said it just automatically loaded in background, if you want to free up memory you can just kill it...
if it is not being used at all you can just uninstall it.. but be perfectly sure if you uninstall a system app... it will free up memory and save battery life..

Thx..but, if they using my memory and "app's not running" then I do not understand the purpose why are loaded they?
Is there any solution to load they only when I need it, like in windows system?
I mean, when I close that app that it close fully and my memory freed up!

I completely understood you
these apps are given memory by the android OS to run in background. there they do simple things such as syncing and checking for updates, or other things that i don't know of. this is functional, because when you open the app, it won't take forever to load and do what u want it to do.
However...
If you open an application (so it actively runs in the foreground) and it needs memory, the android OS will take the memory from your background apps and give it to the foreground app to use.
so, nothing to worry about as it has a functional purpose and won't interfere with your actual phone usage
if you don't want apps to use a lot of memory tho, you could try setting the vm heap size to something lower. (I believe 32M is standard) but this also limits the memory usage of the foreground app.

Thx for answer..but this still no option for me.
I wanted to "stoped" apps at boot, and just then used it when I need it. And when I exit from some app to free memory and fully exit from android system like in windows systems.

They are running on background and are programmed to start when booting ur phone, some apps like IM+ has the option to disable it, try doing it...

in the last times I've a problem on my HTC LEgend (non-rooted): i start to install apps and move those on external storage with A2SD.
All works normally, but if shutdwon the phone and restart, all the apps installed on SD are loose!!
All the links on the screen and in the menus are loose, and if I go in application manager, under applications, those installed on SD are listed but if I click on info, from this screen is impossible to remove the app.
Another strange think : from the memory manager, in settings, it's impossible to unmount external SD. They take a lot of time and I must terminate the process.
Last strange think : if I open the SD on PC there's all the contents.
Any suggestions?
P.S. : I've done an hard reset of the phone, and reinstalled all the apps that usually use (30-35 apps), but in this operation I don't formatted the SD.

CUT TO THE SOLUTION BELOW -- SEARCH FOR ////
Some (not all) of my apps moved to SD (all by Titanium Backup Pro) have begun to disappear and (sometimes) reappear without warning after I began to add and delete large Virtual Machines created in QEMU from my 16GB SanDisc class 10 microSD card on my HTC Droid Incredible running rooted stock Verizon Android Froyo 2.2.3. I know this thread is far from my phone's "home base", but from what I can tell this problem with disappearing apps located on an sdcard is NOT determined by hardware or even Android version.
I also happen to use LauncherPro by Federico Carnales instead of the built-in HTC Sense launcher. I noted elsewhere on XDA that a user had suggested that because at least some (maybe all) launchers start before the SD Card that this may be a problem, especially if changes are made to the sdcard that the launcher did not perform, or was not active during their performance by other apps such as Titanium Backup. That fits my situation, because I unmounted the SD, physically removed it to a PC, and added/deleted large VM files to save (lots) of time. No problems of this sort before I did this, so there must be some connection.
I noted that other users have tried reformatting SD, substituting different brands of SD, using newer/older SD etc. None of these reliably helped. So I skipped these options.

Titanium Backup Pro batch scenarios confirmed there were no apps in a forced uninstalled state (i.e. I had not done the deed, the system somehow had done it or at least rendered the apps "invisible" to Titanium, which decided they needed reinstallation).
The only odd behaviour was that auto brightness was turned off after I unchecked Fast Boot and rebooted. Going into Android Settings > Display and rechecking "auto brightness" took care of that. No other oddities or strange behaviours thus far (but it has only been about an hour).
I will report back here on this thread only (Samsung Fascinate > Fascinate Q&A > What just happend? apps on sdcard) if anything else requires reporting. Silence implies success!

I have htc legend with C7 installed. The USB storage used to run
quite well until some day ago. Now whenever I turn it on, the status bar on
top gets hidden somewhere, and I cannot find anyway to turn it off other then
restarting. But status bar is only one problem, my computer won't show any
USB storage, and there is no way I can access the files in my device.
What could be the problem? Why is my status bar gets hidden? Also I cannot
find turn on/off USB storage option in WIFI settings menu. where is it?
Reflash your rom and everything will be running perfectly again.

I think you might have some system apps on your SD card so when that dismounts the phone crashes.
I was hoping to fix it without having to reinstall things. I dont want to do everything again , unless I go for ICS
I have been moving apps to SD card using App mover utlity (only the apps that it suggest). I will have a look again, but I don't think I can move something that systems needs to run.
Here is the list of apps in SD card which i think may be causing some troubles:
Google+
Hotmail
Messages Widget
Google+ was updated a few months after release to have it natively moved to the SD card. The only drawback is you can't use the post widget. (Which really isn't so great)
For Hotmail, you can use Hotmail Exchange ActiveSync with the Android Mail app. It's the mail app you see when you forget to install GApps. Setup: http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010/08/windows-live-hotmail-gets-exchange-activesync.ars

As for the Messages Widget, I don't know what it is. But since it has the word widget, I'll tell you that Android doesn't support widgets for apps that are moved to the SD card, unless it's on an ext partition. So you'd best leave that alone.
If you're absolutely certain that these apps are the root of your problem, consider these alternatives. If you're not, still try 'em out. They're worth not risking workarounds for.

Start them once, and they will be remaining in memory until Android OS decides the memory is better needed elsewhere.
What you describes is not The Android Way. Primary memory is the most critical resource in Android, lacking virtual memory. Due to this fact, an app may be killed by the OS if more memory is needed for other needs. On the other hand, an app often used, is very likely to reside in memory, giving you this "instant access" you want. If you'd be able to lock an app and its memory, the phone would get out-of-memory not being able to release it when you try stating Angry Birds.
This said, some devices have "Don't keep activities", "Background limit: no processes" or so much bloatware installed, leaving an app gets it more or less instant killed, causing the next start of it to be considerably slower. In this case, the solution is to adjust those parameters, not forcing your apps active.
Read this thread. It might give you some light. Specially the " bulletproof " thing.
The only reason I'm needing this is because of the buggy dialer/contacts that comes with the stock sgs s3 ics 404, where if they go out of the memory they take like 1 sec to load, whereas different dialers and any other stuff is pretty much instant.
It's annoying to experience that delay whenever you need to make a call on a flagship smartphone.
And other market dialers are ugly and/or need the stock dialer to open for them to work.
I would like to avoid rooting g and losing my warranty as well.
