[Q] Incredible becoming extinct due to the thunderbolt? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now that there is the big news about the incredible HD aka thunderbolt, is htc going to stop making the HTC incredible?

No one can say but HTC or Verizon. However, the Incredible going EOL around the time Thunderbolt goes on sale wouldn't come as too much of a shock.

it may reach the end of its life for "normal" smartphone users but for Android enthusiasts and/or devs I sorta see the Inc as the new Nexus One...the Inc is one of the best if not the best unlocked phones on the market...

good to know, thanks for all of your input. I love the incredible, I just wish there was a way that it could get the new 4g service!!!!

yes they will stop making it... but don't worry cuz the inc is everywhere here at college. I have seen someone with an inc in every single one of my classes. Exactly one other inc user in all my small classes except for two others with the inc in English and more in giant lectures. The inc has 2 more years of ppl actually using it.
Besides I'm predicting a buy a thunderbolt get an incredible free promo in order to empty their inventory. Good news is this would mean more inc users.
Side Story:
I was in Chem and I saw someone in the row in front of me and a couple seats to the right using an incredible with my theme what are the odds??! I was so exited to reach over my friends and tap this guy on the back to tell him that I made that! Strangely he had no clue wtf XDA was which is weird cuz I only posted it on XDA. He wasn't interested in talking at all so I didn't get to ask him where he got it.

I love my DINC.. My wife has one also. but she's not so happy, ( prev BB user ) so my plan is to find her a tour on CL and put her DINC in my dresser as a backup.. lol

Dude that must have been awesome feeling! but what a flake for not being frickin excited that you see him using YOUR hard work.

I'm thinkin once the Thunderbolt comes alive I will use my dads upgrade to get it and use the INC to keep learning Android. I agree the INC is a great learning phone, as was the Eris, but DAMN she was slow.

Since the 4G or LTE whatever VZW promotes it as will only be in limited cities for a long time it won't be worth it to get a Thunderbolt for a while. The DInc is one of the best phones out there so buying a Thunderbolt in a no 4G area is a waste of money.

That would be true if LTE was the one and only thing that Thunderbolt brought to the table.

What is so compelling to upgrade if not for the 4G?

More screen real estate
Front facing camera
Better cpu
BT upgradeable to 3.0
Sense 2.0
No need for horizontal desktop cradle.
Conversely, the lack of a trackpad can be a compelling reason not to upgrade for many.

I do not think most will see a difference in most of these.
A bigger screen may be a bad thing since it is more uncomfortable in your pocket.
Sense 2.0 sounds good but it will be ported to the DInc probably since XDA has great developers.
A bigger CPU....really don't think the majority of users are going to feel a difference or need the faster CPU.
I am with Gahh Its Lee and probably going to wait. This is not normal for me as I usually buy the newest tech stuff at launch but cell companies need to work on towers and a full 4G network instead of worrying about selling phones that wont even work at top speed on 90% of their towers. They are putting the cart before the horse and I think VZW is taking a page from the ATT and Tmobile playbook by doing this.

I wonder if Verizon will do what they did with the X and give anyone who is upgrade eligible an upgrade early when the phone is released. I know there was that leaked info that said they were eliminating early upgrades altogether, but I wonder...

When this phone launches, with the bionic and 2x or whatever it is, vzw will be adding 4g to 175 more markets.

have you guys noticed that the Thunderbolt cant be charged while using the kickstand?
the usb port is on the side it rests on... what terrible design flaw is that?

You can plug it in them put something under the stand part and just have the phone sit higher

HTC #1

I just read that HTC is the number one cell phone supply last quarter. Im a happy buyer. Hope everyone else is too.

I'm not. HTC has gotten too comfortable with how things are going and are now becoming the next Samsung. They are pumping out uglier phones at a higher rate with more issues and less and less QC than normal--and that's bad.
HTC needs to go back to being "hungry" like they were in the Windows Mobile/early Android days. Their same tired design and irritating design flaws and hardware/software issues are becoming so bad, that I almost find myself wanting to switch to Motorola or even the dreaded iPhone (once it receives a worthy upgrade, not the 4S). Except on the Sprint network, nothing really comes close to the EVO 3D in my opinion. The Epic 4G Touch, while a fantastic phone, does not meet my standards either. I am not looking to downgrade my screen resolution just to get a minimal increase in phone performance or battery life. Plus the Epic 4G Touch seems a bit too plasticy for my tastes and seems to be very fragile from so much plastic. I don't mind a thin phone, or even a light phone, but damn you can't have both and feel comfortable enough in your purchase. Use higher quality materials PLEASE instead of worrying about pushing out 45 phones a year.
Sales translate into resources. More resources will allow more wiggle in the r&d dept. HTC are still hungry, they had the first 4g phone, followed by the first 3d phone. Seeing sammy and apple t
Chasing a such a small company is pretty amazing and i hope htc doesnt think they coast because this is only for this quarter most likely.

Dont have to challege, numbers show that htc out sold samsung and apple this quarter. Personally i love my 3d and its head and shoulders ahead of the og evo and every other phone ive owned. U read on xda and it makes htc sound bad because most love stock android. I think that makes up the smallest % of phone users and is one reason apple is praised for their os.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I still like their devices quite a bit. Not a challenge, it's a matter of opinion.
I had to return mine and get a replacement due to a very crooked screen but you know what? Sh*t happens. Take a look around. All these companies are cranking new stuff out faster than is humanly possible if you want to release a perfect device that will guarantee no problems. Look at Apple and their last two iPhones. They're supposed to be tops in quality and manufacturing. But look at the iPhone 4 and "antennagate", the free bumpers, the screens turning yellow and green. And now the 4S with the battery life issues.
Bottom line: almost everything produced today has early release issues. You want a perfect device: be willing to pay 2x what you pay today for it and wait longer for it! Hell, even IF you release a perfect product, there will still be whiners.
I say HTC is on par with the best.

Well there is such a device lol, it is on the carrier to request them.
The EVO 4G+ would be that phone.
I'm pretty happy with HTC.
What I hate is their policy as far as the bootloaders go & their pathetic timing & quality of the kernel source releases.
Embrace the community 100% or go screw yourself.
They need to fire the team who works on them. Samsung does this right & from what I hear so does Sony, HTC has no excuse not to.
The largest mobile 3rd party Dev community STARTED with HTC devices under the XDA-model line of phones, they should be the ones flaunting & the standing poster-OEM for this.
I do like HTC's upgrade-ability situation, the EVO 4G was a shining example of this.
I like HTC Sense & will continue to buy models with HTC Sense.
I also like the Dev following & the kernel devs who've rolled with us on Sprint/HTC.
And with that, I'll continue to be a HTC user.
Well the htc evo design is out. Any word on how it is? I wouldnt downgrade from my 3d but i would bump up my wifes nexus s 4g.

Hey Droid Eris owners

As a former Eris owner, I just wanted to stop by and say hi. This was my first Android and I loved it.
I'd also like to advise you guys when you do update your phones, HTC has the best rom communities in most cases. HTC phones typically get the most rom development. If you love the Eris community (which is one of the best in my opinion) , you may want to consider sticking with HTC. With some Androids, they have a very limited selection of roms. coming from an Eris, that may leave you disappointed.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I went to the rezound, they have like 5 droid incredible devs and counting lol its great!
I think the LG Revolution only has 5 roms total if that and it's been out since last May. That's why I came back to let people know so they dont get something like that and regret it.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I counted at least 10 different roms for rezound not countin the aosp, cm9 wip(s)
I am thinking about replacing my Eris after I cracked the screen when it fell out of my pocket during a traffic stop (no one got a ticket). I hate contracts and don't want to to pay big money (over 150) on a phone. So that leaves me in the used phone arena.
I would want a phone with lots of support from this type of group and one with 4g speed. So my question is what would yall recommend? Or do I just bite the bullet and be locked in with Verizon for another two years?

Go to Craigslist and look for an Android. I.see the thunderbolt always sselling for around $200 used on there (little more than the 150 you want, but no 2 year contract). That will also give you a phone with a good rom development community. Trust me, it has one of the best rom.development communities of the 4g phones on Verizon.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
Don't get.the LG.revolution. it only has one real rom. While it has an unlocked bootloader, there are phones out there.with locked bootloaders that have more roms developed for them.

Thanks for the info!
Just sold my two Erises on CL, coudln't have made it this long without gingershedbread from workshed. I went with Evo, another family member went with Optimus. I must say I have a hard time recommending any LG phone. The optimus is speedy but almost no support for it at all though there is a CM7 version that has been ported, thank goodness for that. But I agree with what has been said about htc phones and forums, lots of support. Good luck!
I decided to go with the HTC Thunderbolt. Now to figure out which Rom to flash it with. The even bigger question is do I give my Eris to my daughter or do I keep it to play with?
It was really tough replacing my Eris! : )
Again thanks to all who have contributated to the development of the roms. It is greatly appreciated.
The thunderbolt has plenty of roms to play with. Let your daughter experience the wonders of android.
I hope I helped you choose a phone that you will love and not one you will kick yourself in the ass everyday over (like I did with the LG revolution). While I like Motorola because of the battery life and the quality of production, HTC is where it's at for roms. My love for Android began with the Eris and I hope I can help anyone who still has it, pick an upgrade that they will also love.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I see your using the bionic. What is the rom situation like for that phone?
Sent from my ERIS using xda premium
It has good roms but small selection. I don't recommend it if you want to play with several different roms. If you want to stick to 1 or 2, its a good phone.
Many of the developers have moved on to the nexus. I suspect that development will pick up some when Motorola releases ICS. We have an alpha version coming along.
While it's a very good phone, it didn't live up to it's hype. It was released with some problems that it shouldn't have had after being delayed for as long as it was.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
The touchscreen was going bad in my Eris back in April. I guess it was losing it's sensitivity. I dealt with it for a few weeks but I was stuck in my contract until Nov. So I found a new digitizer online for $37 and a phone tear down and digitizer install video on youtube. For the tech savvy people like myself (I'm an engineer) it was the easiest and best way to get more life out of my Eris when I wasn't eligible for a phone upgrade and didn't want to pay full price for a new one.
Just another option for you.

Ta-ta for now my friends!
Got my Eris launch weekend in Nov 09. and had it rooted and running smooth which kept me from using my upgrade until I cracked my screen last month...so it was either a 99 asuriun deductible or a Rezound on sale for 99 online.. guess which choice I made?

HTC has been really struggling lately, and now with OnLive costing them $40 million, things are definitely not looking good.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think we're going to start seeing the effects of all of this loss soon? I'm worried about new devices releasing, as well as updates being given to existing devices, if the company keeps falling like this.

Ouch, definitely doesn't sound good. Not sure if they will be able to stay in it or not...depending on how this whole Apple/Samsung thing turns out, they may be able to use it to their advantage, but it sounds like they've got some pretty big issues to deal with. I think I'm already pretty much resigned to getting whatever Samsung's offering is when I'm eligible for my next upgrade. I had a tough time choosing this time around anyway, so I figure I'll give them a shot (never owned a Samsung)...but it sounds like that may be the "only" option if things don't improve for HTC.

Good, sometimes drastic things need to happen before a company makes drastic changes necessary.
I guess it is what it is. I am happy with the EVO LTE. I'm going with a Nexus next time around since they will hopefully be beyond the stupid pentile screens by then. Maybe we will get lucky and HTC will get a Nexus at some point in the future.
If rim and Nokia are still in business I think htc will be OK for now.. they do need to start making better decisions and listening to their customers ..they are still turning almost a billion dollar profit this quarter ..still pretty good

They're hurting, but I have high hopes that they come back even stronger. They need to make a few adjustments to the way they work, and it can make all the difference. For one, be as dev friendly as they used to be. Second, less device models as they made it seem like they were going to do. They need to cut as much variants out, and focus on keeping close to the same phone amongst different carriers. That's my opinion.

It's funny because you probably didn't even read the article.
They're making a profit, but they're still a shadow of their former glory. Their market share has plummeted and it isn't showing any signs of improving. Just because they're still pulling in money doesn't mean that everything is sunshine and rainbows for them.
HTC is still a profitable company, but with such relentless competition from Samsung and Apple, their numbers are dropping fast enough that banks are beginning to get very nervous. This could quite literally be the beginning of the end.

I don't think that HTC is going to go out of business. I'm hoping that they can come up with something that can stabilize them a bit. In my opinion they need to make like Samsung and give their phones more of an identity.
They need try harder to keep their phones in order instead of releasing 20 different devices. They've taken a step in the right direction with the One series, but the naming is way too confusing for most people to be able to tell what the phone is all about. HTC needs a way to make a budget, mid-end, and high-end phone that isn't different on every carrier and that represents itself well.
With the One series, you have the One X, the One XL, the One S, the One V, and I'm sure that the upcoming/rumored One "XL+" (or whatever we call it) will join that lineup as well. The names just have no way of differentiating themselves without looking into the specs. If you walked up to someone and said, "Do you want the One V or the One S?" They're going to say, "Huh? What do the letters mean?"
But with all of the growth that Samsung has seen, I'm not sure that HTC will ever be able to catch up.
That settles it...I am buying a spare Rezound

Evo lte underrated?

Why is it that our phones are under rated. I mean seriously? I see so many reports that the GS3 is the best Android phone of fall 2012, I would disagree. Although it is a great phone, I would not think that it is the best, if anything I would say EVO LTE and GS3 would be tied at that spot. Would anyone disagree? This is really irritating me!
Its not underrated, its more like under the radar. Lets face it the EVO is a small name in the industry when you have a device across all carriers which is selling at record numbers. The EVO is viewed more as the little engine that could.

So I wonder why they didnt just keep the EVO name across the board rather than come out with the One Series? IMO, I think that the sales for the EVO name aren't gonna stick in the future when they are bringing out same products with different names. Samsung and Apple both market for pretty much one specific phone and run with it, aside from the new Galaxy Notes

Does anyone care whether or not our phone gets the publicity? As far as I'm concerned we have the best kept secret in smartphones.
The constant bashing for the LTE issue is not helping it either. Sprint still has not said officially that they are working on a fix with HTC. This phone had LTE issue in the lab before it launched but Sprint needed the phone to launch otherwise they would risk losing many accounts coming off their 2 year with no new flagship phone to go to. So it was rushed out the gate, and HTC/Sprint have tried to fix the modem twice with an OTA, but have failed both times. My hope that a 3rd round will correct the issue is getting weaker by the day.
I think I'll be taking advantage of the GS3 upgrade on Black Friday and rotating the "EVO Can't do-LTE" to of my other lines that really doesn't care about 4g. Love the EVO's battery life, screen, performance etc, but the LTE issue just hits hard. Kinda like buying a sports car with a nice V8, it looks good, but the manufacturer just hasn't figured out how to get the computer to make all 8 cylinders fire correctly so it's running on 4 cylinders for now.

The difference between HTC and Samsung, I believe, is their market approach.
Samsung has it right. They sell one major phone on multiple carriers, advertise it in ways that appeal to their largest audience (probably 15-35). And they have a few other lower end phones too.
HTC doesn't understand this, I suppose. The One series was halfway there. But then the EVO is too exclusive. Then, to dig HTC deeper into their hole, instead of focusing on marketing and updates for the One series line up, they for some reason think they would come out ahead by spending time and money in development for these new One X+ things.
WTF?
Though I am an HTC fanboy, mostly a Sense Fanboy, I don't deny HTC's bad strategies as a company. If I didn't think TouchWiz looked like something from the Dollar General, I might get a GS3. But what it comes down to when a user chooses a phone today, is what User Interface does that person prefer? Sense? TouchWiz? iOS? BlackberryOS? That is the determining factor, I believe.

BTW,
I loved the other day when a coworker was showing off her new iPhone 5 to everyone who was gathered around. She said, "AND IT DOES VOICE TO TEXT NOW!"
Sorry, had to make fun.
i work at best buy and everyone looking for the gs3, after showing them my phone. they are like i will take that one. i have yet to have a customer take the gs3 over the evo. but they just didnt know the evo was even out. and they were coming from the old one.
i think the evo lte is the best phone out.. not just because i have it but the screen is bangin.. battery life is great.. the lte beats any other phone in quadrants.. linpacks.. antutu benchmarks u name it.. it is funny how the LTE gets NO love at all.. when ever i read write ups on phone tec the LTE never ever gets mentioned.. the LTE is the beast thats nobody talks about.. the gs3 is a dope phone also i just dont like touch wiz at all.. im a HTC guy.. my babys mother has the gs3 i rooted it for her and flashed a few roms on it.. 2 top phones out rite now the evo lte & the gs3!!! :good:
If you ask me, I say this phone is overrated to be honest. This is coming from someone that has owned all 3 of the EVOs. The specs of the phone looks great on paper, but the phone just doesn't perform that well in the real world. Seems like there's more time spent trying to get the phone to run right instead of just enjoying it. HTC failed BIG TIME when they screwed-up the phone's ability to multitask properly. I've been a member of this site for over 6 years and have a very low post count since I've mainly lurked throughout the years. A large portion of my current post count is because of this EVO and trying to get it to run smoothly. This is my second one, btw.
Anytime you have to rely on a web site to fix multiple problems for things that a manufacturer should have made sure were working properly before selling to consumers equals a huge fail IMO. There's a large portion of people on these forums that don't mind spending all of their free time tinkering and fixing their phones, but for an average consumer that leads a busy lifestyle, do you really think they want that kind of hassle, especially if they're not tech savvy? HELL NO!!!

So what do you tell them when they see the S3 with LTE and the EVO LTE stuck on 3G all the time?

The EVO is exclusive to Sprint, they created the brand because the needed a big push to compete with the other service providers. They weren't just trying to out do Apple, never were. The Apple bashing was to help solidify the brand as a recognizable device easily capable of matching the top smartphone at the time. The biggest problem is that the EVO line is Sprint exclusive, its not underrated by any means
Lol...I own both. I love both
Both will be old news within 2 months lol

I agree completely.
I also think the built in kickstand sets the EVO line apart from others . I watch a lot of netflix at work and see other peeps.using books to hold there phone up
I wish it was a bit beefier but its just as strong as the old kick stand and has the built in spring for extra support. I like that u can flip it any way I want and still prop it up

So long Rezound folks, and thanks for all the fish

On the downside, I still haven't figured it out how to prevent my Rezound from burning like a redhead in a bikini at the beach. On the upside, Verizon was very nice to me and gave me an upgrade a year early, so I ordered the GSIII. So long sunburnt redhead, hello tall, blond, companion with large parts made of plastic!
Everyone in the forums has been super awesome, and I love all you devs who've made my Rezound experience tolerable! I get to keep my Rezound, so I'll still be around to check in and see what comes down the pipe, and if I can finally get decent battery life (so I can either give it to my sister or sell it).

Nobody important at all. Not a dev. Just a user who is appreciate of XDA and its members.
ETA: Also, that was kind of unnecessarily aggressive.
Sorry, I just wasn't sure if I recognized you or if you were just a lurker. Plenty of users have "wolf" in their usernames and it's kind of easy to lose track.
So uh... no hard feelings, I guess.
Hm, on-topic contributing discussion to this thread... how easy would you say it was to deal with Verizon on having a burning Rezound then? Verizon was voted amongst a top 5 worst customer service companies I saw a few weeks ago and thought they didn't really deserve a place there.

No hard feelings at all.
As for your question, actually, I've had nothing but pleasant customer service interactions with them. I've been through 4 or 5 replacement Rezounds, each time they were helpful and quickly sent me a new one. The last two times I asked for a different phone, but they would only exchange it for a Razr or something equally bad. This time I managed to convince them to let me upgrade early. My general rule with Verizon customer service is that if at first you dont succeed, try try try again. Often it just takes getting to the right supervisor who will approve it. I've gotten early upgrades several times (recurring GPS issues with my Droid 2 and X led to an early upgarde to my Rezound). This is my phone history:
Droid 1 => Droid 2 (they were supposed to replace the Droid 1, didnt have any in stock, so I got a Droid 2) => Droid X (recurring GPS problems on Droid 2 so they switch my warranty replacement to an X) => Droid X2 (regular upgrade) => Droid X (X2 was so bad I sold it [for $550]) => Rezound (Droid X had same recurring GPS issues as Droid 2, they gave me early upgrade) => GS3 (all sorts of issues, from overheating to loose screens to non functioning touchscreen [depending on the return])
Good luck OP! I'm sad to see a reasonable person leave the Rez crowd. I just bought one off a fella techie chick from out of state. Came with lotsa goodies too.
My VZ cust service has been good for the most part. It only took me 2 phone calls late last year to be given Unlimited Data with Unlim Hotspot packages on both my Thunderbolt phones at the time.
See ya around!

My actual first name is a translation of wolf. Hence the username. I come by it honestly . And Gray, you may not know who I am, because I only posted occasionally, but I know you and your work as a Dev has been awesome, so thanks!
I'm going to check back in here from time to time to see if I can get my Rezound up to sellable status. Who knows? My sunburt redhead may eventually learn how to use sunblock (I'm really stretching this metaphor aren't I?)
It took me forever but I think I just realized.. "so long and thanks for all the fish" That's a line from hitchhikers guide to the galaxy correct?

Indeed it is! It is both a line from the first book as well as the title of the fourth book.
I have recently ditched the Rezound also, I was getting tired of the shoddy build quality of it and the poor battery life, so I decided to get a used Galaxy Nexus off of ebay for about $200 since I was considering getting one before I get the Rezound anyway. It took me a little while to get used to it at first because a fair amount of things are a lot different (such as OCing and the screen calibration) but all in all its a good phone. I have pretty much everything settled with it (running Friday's CM10 nightly with Franco's kernel clocked at 1.8 GHz), but I do miss the beautiful screen on the Rezound yet I don't miss how it annihilated my battery. I may keep my Rezound for a little while just to see how the JB build come along but in the end I'm probably going to sell it to help pay for the Gnex.
Keep up the great work guys, I'll probably see you around these parts.
