What is the best keyboard for the dell streak? - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wanted to get sense of the keyboards everyone was using with the dell streak.
I used the better keyboard with an iPhone skin on it maybe I will post a pic later.

I use smart keyboard and I like it alot, however the only other one I have used is the stock 2.2 keyboard which I believe is swype I did not care for it.

Better Keyboard with the Black Light skin, because I bought it for another device and am used to it / like it.

I agree. By far the best keyboard out there. My beef with most android keyboards is that the space bar is so small. You can hide the comma and period on this keyboard and make the spacebar HUGE!
There are also several skins for this that come with it. HTC, iPhone, etc... Tons of other settings to make it more customized too.
I also see where someone just ported the droid x keyboard. I used that one on my captivate for a while and really liked it too.
But smart keyboard pro hands down is the best.

I'm highly addicted to swype.. I can't live without it.
BTW the streak is my first device in a really long time that doesn't have a physical qwerty keyboard and swype has helped me get over that!

Since a lot of people here said smart keyboard I downloaded it. Its pretty good I like it.

I'm using Swype and I love it. So stinkin' fast. It is one handed type, not two-handed, but as the dadgum thing is so big, I only have one hand free to type with!
I might try out some of the others, but I've just enjoyed Swype that I haven't bothered.

Swype
Sent from the Iphone Killer

I used every major keyboard on the market (demo versions) and came back to stock 2.3 keyboard because I didn't find anything impressive about any of them. Smart Keyboard is the closest thing to a keyboard worth paying for, and even then it's just for the adjustable key height and a couple more layout preferences than the default keyboard.
I completely disagree with people who say Swype on the Streak is fast. MAYBE in portrait, but I still don't see how you can hold this thing and type on it with only 1 hand free. In landscape I would have to slide my finger back and forth four times across the width of this huge screen to type a five letter word like "world". I guarantee I can type faster with stock keyboard than anyone with Swype. Granted I went up to 240 with LCD Density so that the keys are more spaced out, which is why I would say Smart Keyboard is the best, just don't care to pay for it.

Hey I just noticed u can increase the hieght of the keyboard with the smart keyboard best $3 I spent lol
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

i use the standard swype keyboard that comes with the froyo build. i think that after some tinkering you get darn fast at it, of course you must have a properly sized hand in order to hold it comfortably in portrait, but alas, I am just lucky enough

I'm currently using thumb keyboard which is designed to make typing easier on tablets in landscape, also has a very nice portrait option which offsets half of the keyboard (it's hard to explain, there's screen shots on the market). You can adjust the height, change skins, it gets more customisable with each update which I like!
Someone on modaco is also working on a clone if the 1.6 keyboard which is coming along nicely but has a few bugs to sort out before it's perfect

+1 on the Thumb Keyboard...I am finally able to type on a touchscreen in portrait mode with my gorilla hands...
But, I got one o dem ipad stylus thingies and have been having fun with it and the Swype keyboard...

[Q] Stock Honeycomb keyboard?

While I'm waiting for my keyboard dock to come in, I'm using the ASUS on-screen keyboard, which is a pile of crap. Is there a way to get the stock Honeycomb keyboard, or should I look for a third party keyboard in the market?
you can change it in the settings, under language to get the stock one. im still searching for a better one than both of those. so far, its go kb...
The stock keyboard is way better than the Asus one for me, too. But which is the best tablet keyboard out there?
I've seen recommendations for Swiftkey-X for Tablets, and for "Thumb Keyboard." Both are paid apps, so I've been hesitant without a solid recommendation. I know there are others too.
What's best?
Yeah asus keyboard sux. I'm using the slideIt keyboard now. works great and fast. a lot faster to slide in portrait mode than in landscape. I have big hands but thiswidescreen is even to wide for me to type easily like on my iPad.

Took me a while to find it, but thanks. Much better now.
I just read a review comparing SwiftKey and Thumb. Even though I love Swift on my phone, Thumb won out because it's cheaper and MUCH more configurable. From just a little bit of use, I'm definitely liking it.
had the og transformer, and thumb keyboard is the best! Also has a bunch of themes so looks nice too.

You guys could get the swype beta, it's cool, in landscape mode, it can turn into a small little keyboard that you can move from side to side, and use with one hand. Just go on swype .com to get it

Need a new keyboard app!

Ok so i hate the stock asus keyboard on this thing. What do you guys suggest for an alternate?
I love swype on my evo 3d but i hear that it doesnt work that great on the prime. I would like a good swype alternate or a split keyboard.
All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I have been using swift key tablet. It works great for me. There is a 30 day trial on the market
I dont really care about keyboards since im going to be keeping mine docked most of the time.. but my wife loves Slide IT. It is pretty much Swype for tablet. It is normally $5.99 I think but right now its on sale for $0.99 Has lots of nice free themes all over the market too.

Try A.I.type keyboard.
I used it alot on my HP touchpad (running android). It was very good. Just got my prime this morning and haven't had a chance to do too much with it other than update it to ICS.
here is the Link
I've now used Swype (doesn't fit the screen and a pop-up message to that effect comes up every time you type something). It does work in landscape mode, but not at all in portrait -- you end up with something entirely different than the keys you swyped or tapped. So that was a no go.
I've been using Thumb Keyboard for a few days, but it doesn't work all that well for me, especially since there seem to be many times when I'm holding the device and need to type one-handed. So, it's better than stock, but not perfect for me.
Now I'm using SlideIT, with the metal blue skin that matches ICS perfectly. It's beautiful, fits both landscape and portrait modes flawlessly, and works like a charm.
Unless and until Swype releases a version that works with the Prime's screen resolution, I'm sticking with SlideIT.

I'm the developer of Thumb Keyboard and I'm very interested in this. Do you mean that the performance of TKB is worse or are you referring to the text prediction?
The strategy of Thumb Keyboard is to have user adjustable layouts so that typos are reduced to a minimum. (So correction can be reduced to a miminum). In particular for the Transformer there's an option to adjust the width of the two halves so that the keys are reachable despite the large bezel.
I'm working on a new update (version 5) that will make use of the advanced spelling engine of Ice cream sandwich. Tests have shown that these are as powerful as AI prediction.
flext9 better than sywpe in my opinion
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nuance.flext9.input&hl=en
The ASUS keyboard can function the same way Swype does, you just have to enable it in the settings. Having said that, I use Thumb Keyboard.
I am a using SwiftKey x on phone and tablet. The tablet version has a split keyboard which I am trying to get to grips with.. The phone version is great.

hey guys - I use the phone version and I LOVE it. I installed the free trial on my prime just now but it doesn't pick up what I'm typing. If I'm typing quickly, it skips letters unless I slow down. Do any of you have this issue? It makes it impossible to type on!
Gonna try an uninstall/reinstall real quick.
edit: no go might just give up on this
I like SwiftKey Tablet X.. Works great and like the word prediction and split keybord.
Haven't had any problems. You with problem have you download the correct one? and have you tried to type in different apps/place so there isn't the program you uses that make the SwiftKey to perform bad.

No I dont have this problem but i do not do much typing where i am speed typing. My biggest gripe, which is not the keyboards fault, is the autp rotation is too sensitive. Many times i am typing something slightly move the screen and rotates and i lose my spot or completely lose what i'm typing because i hit the back button.
On my phone (Desire with CM7) I use and love Swype. I understand that an ICS-compatible version will be available at the end of January. That said, I can see that it won't be as neat on the Prime's form factor. We'll see.
In the mean while I'm using Thumb Keyboard 4, on the recommendation of another thread on this forum. Current view: the best of the bunch; fairly good but has some flaws (e.g. doesn't auto-capitalise "I", no visible key for a comma; auto-complete/correct doesn't feel quite as smooth as I'd like). Also doesn't suit my fat fingers
In short I really miss Swype, but fear that it won't be quite as good as on my phone, particularly in landscape.

I wholeheartedly agree
It's the best keyboard I've used. Swype and the likes aren't very efficient on tablets.
I'm loving thumb keyboard as well. I even started using it over HTC ime on my phone, which I have used for a year and a half on my Droid X, t bolt, and bionic.
I am not the developer of thumb keyboard and i have every app mentioned here and then some. Hands down thumb keyboard for tablets. Not even close. Having the options for split keyboard and for a half screen keyboard for when you are walking around cradling the tablet with one hand and typing with the other is the greatest. No other feature can be more valuable.

Hackers Keyboard on the GNote?

NOTE: I haven't received my Note yet, so I can't test it out. I thought I'd share and see if anyone has any feedback.
This keyboard is usually very good for tablets (it's really nice on my CM7.2 Nook Color), so I thought it might be nice on our Notes, if only landscape.
Code:
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.pocketworkstation.pckeyboard
Let me know!
I tried it just now. Its a pretty awesome concept but I found the buttons too small for the note. I tried 4 row and 5 row setups. I think part of the problem is that I have larger hands.

Yeah, I thought it'd be too small for even our Note. I'll probably install it and save it for a backup because it would likely be good for CMD/Terminal usage with all the extra functions (such as tab and escape). Thanks for the feedback by the way!
downloaded it this morning. used it all day. i got used to it but it did take me a while to get it set up like i wanted to. all in all, i like it.
I was using Thumb keyboard on the Streak until I started having some significant issues with it. Went to the Hacker's keyboard, and installed it as soon as I got sick of the built-in keyboard not having numbers on it. Been on it for a while now with no complaints.
I use hacker's KB whenever I use a terminal emulator and it works fine. Best I've found on the note so far though is perfect keyboard. Samsung was too damn big, and I like a split KB in landscape usually.

Is this keyboard optimized for the galaxy note? Meaning if I were to type in landscape mode does it allow me to still see the web page, text message, email ect. That im typing on without pressing back? If not I would say the stock optimized gingerbread keyboard is still better.
Edit: After this thread I decided to buy the keyboard and couldn't be happier. Great layouts and always have been a fan of the arrows since HTC sense. This keyboard is also EXTREMELY fast. FINNALY a keyboard that can keep up! Landscape options are also very awesome. Good stuff.

I prefer Swiftkey Tablet X
I came to the same conclusion just the other day. I was having trouble with typing speed on swiftkey x/swiftkey x tablet so I installed thumb keyboard. After tweaking the cursor row height all the keys line up just right for my thumbs leading to much faster typing for me. The ICS theme is pretty good as well.

Yes you can customize the layout according to whether your in landscape or portrait.
You can also change the size and height of the rows and keys so you can dictate how much screen is used by keyboard. I didn't mess with any of those settings and have no problem with it taking up to much screen or not seeing where I am typing.
The split key layout is nice in landscape because you can reach all the keys with both thumbs. Also in portrait I use the offset layout where the keys are at different heights so your thumbs don't get in the way of each other and allows you to grip the phone comfortably. And there is the standard layout as well.
Tons of options you can change pretty much anything. Try it out you always have 15 minutes to refund. Oh ya plus there are about 30 themes and color combinations for the keyboard. I use the honeycomb theme its awesome
Sent from the only smartphone designed by Chuck Norris
I use Thumb Keyboard for my tablet, but usually for the tiny keyboard on the right, not the split keyboard (hard to reach the middle).
I often switch between sliding & thumb typing, so I've been using Touchpal a lot. I love it's ability to slide up & down on the top & bottom rows to get lots of alternate symbols. For some reason, I really dislike holding down on a key for a second to get to the alternate symbol.
With that in mind, the keyboard I've been using a lot lately is... Keypurr!
Negatives - as far as I can tell, dev's have abandoned it. No replies or updates in 6 months. Can't adjust size of the keyboard.
Pros - Slightly compact layout (not the 'full compact' mode). Ability to slide up & down on all letters for alternate symbols. 12 Pre-defined by user function keys to hit a button on the suggestion area to auto-type out anything you want.
Finally, it also has abbreviations (full customization). So I can set t/the, M/Matthew, x/Alex, v/Steven, idk/I don't know.. and so on.
I wouldn't mind a full querty keyboard with the same functions I like in Keypurr (function keys, abbreviations, sliding on keys for symbols). Anyone know which other keyboard support 1 or more of those features?
EDIT: Testing Perfect Keyboard. It has the shortcut ability, but not slide for symbols. Might write to them to ask.

Swype, no question.
I'm not a huge fan of Swype, I guess it's either you love it or you don't. I like the ICS keyboard if I'm going for more of a stock look or Swiftkey
Hard to beat the word predictions on Swiftkey. I only have to type about half the words if that much.
I don't have the same phone, but I find two to be top of class for their respective categories.
For slide keyboards that work by swiping, I find FlexT9 to be the best experience in terms of speed and slide recognition.
For a standard keyboard, my recommendation is always SwiftKey. My friend swears by Thumbkeyboard mentioned in another post.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
I'm using FlexT9 right now. Works better on the Rez then Swype.
I use Hackers keyboard from the market.
I use Ice Cream sandwich keyboard from the market. Also, swiftkey is very good at prediction. I hate swype with a passion.
I've been trying lots and lots of different keyboards the last few months and still looking for the ideal one.
Used to use SwiftKey, but feel likes it lags behind too much on the Rezound when typing fast, plus the theme's it has (only 4) stink and the font is too small (especially when in the sunlight). Swype is good, but just way too short in my opinion and cannot be height adjusted like a lot of others out there. I'd probably use that one if they added custom height options...
Use SmartKeyboard Pro probably the most, and lately use UltraKeyboard too - lots of themes available, can make it nice and tall, and can swipe it too (not as accurate as Swype though). But need to dial down the key vibration setting or it'll lag.
Use SwiftKey !! It is really fast

+1 for the ICS keyboard. The one from VLLWP.

Used to use swype on the eris. Seems like the longer it was out, the worse it got. Swiftkey is the only one I'll run. Predictions are so dead on it's like it's reading my mind sometimes! Saves so many keystrokes it's not even funny.
i have honestly tried a good majority of the ones mentioned and i like swift key and swype the best, though on swype i have it set for more accuracy as opposed to speed.
I'm sticking with a stock ICS keyboard for now, can't seem to enjoy anything else currently.
