[Q] What next after Hero?? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So... It looks as though Hero development may end with Gingerbread (2.3). Honeycomb (3.0) looks very tablet orientated and some devs are already stating it may be hard to port it.
My question is, after the resilient little Hero, what would be the next best handset to move to? A lot of people have mentioned the Desire HD or the Desire Z, but I'd like to hear from you guys, what do you think?
Update: I prefer a HTC handset myself, but which would be a good one to move to for the next set of decent ROMs??

I also believe, that after getting fully operational 2.3 with 2.6.35 kernel it will be pretty much it
Contracts are ending (I have one more year to go), developers are moving to other projects.
I hope that we will have one day "[GPL][2.3][2.6.35]Final Rom for hero".
After hero? Well, perhaps some crazy samsung device (although their quality isn't as good as HTC). I'm sure I'll stick with android, one of the best choices ever made
cheers!

I'll keep my Hero until a Tegra 2 device is realeased

I'm going to hang on to my hero for as long as possible... But I'm starting to think the Nexus S might be the next decent handset to move to, no-ones started developing ROMs yet though... Although I did notice Cyanogen had created a thread in his forum for it

I think 2.3 is maximum for Hero. Honeycomb is likely their requirements opportunities Hero.

I take that back!!! Nexus S is a Samsung handset, and got a fairly "meh" review on The Register.
It's a personal issue; I just don't like Samsung phones!!

I have to admit, this looks like the root (sorry!) I'm most likely to take.

The Nexus S seems to be a decent choice
But after putting froyo on my hero for the first time and seeing how fast it became, I think I can wait for the next reference phone
Hopefully, the next one will have a full RGB AMOLED instead of the Pentile PoS on the current Nexus S
On my next phone I'm looking for:
Tegra 2 or similar, perhaps dual core hummingbird with dedicated gpu
300+ dpi RGB AMOLED screen
Proper capacitative multitouch
Hard buttons
NO FINGERPRINT MAGNET, minimal gloss&plastic, good materials
In any case, would Honeycomb be for tablets? I assumed that honeycomb won't come to phones

yep, same hear, dual core is the way forward.
I plan to run the hero, cancel my TMO contract and get a giffgaff PAYG sim until a decent Tegra2 (preferrably HTC!) comes to the market.
not sure if i'd go back on contract or stick with giffgaff...i'll see how they perform, then buy the handset sim free (ouch?!?)

personally, i think there will be a version of Honeycomb for phones, when the dual core handsets become more readily available. maybe a 'cut down' version.

i have Hero for like 8 months now. Pretty good phone, but still a little bit slow, only compared to other smartphones (but as a phone, it is great).
But yesterday i bought SGS.
for my girlfriend. i hate world

Sorry, what's an SGS?
Uopdate: OH! Samsung Galaxy S?

it depends on your needs i think. if you're flashjunky like me our hero will end soon i think because the processors won't be enough soon.
and also be careful about screen, only desire (not z nor hd) has amoled screen. so for better screen sharpness, you may get desire for now. and also it gets great scores

It's looking like a HTC Desire at the moment. I was told to avoid the Desire and go for a Desire HD or Desire Z. Not sure why though, the Desire is the only one of the three with an AMOLED display...

I've had the Hero for just over a year now, and honestly, jailbreaking it has given it a new lease of life. That said though, it's definitely not gonna get 3.0 by the looks of things, and I'd rather not get left behind in terms of software updates. I will likely get an HTC or a Samsung; both companies make good hardware that's pretty powerful. I have considered buying a Nexus S outright, but it's kinda beyond my budget right now...

Completely agree with you. I bought a Hero when my iPhone went t*ts up.
But my concern was that the newer versions of Android are going to require faster hardware and there will come a point where the Hero just won't be able to cut it anymore. So what's the next best handset to go up to? At the moment a HTC Desire

Well, it's looking like either Nexus S, or Desire for me =P

Should I sell my hero to buy Nexus?

Personally the Nexus's hardware and speed make me feel the hero outdated.
What would you guys think about switching to Nexus from Hero?
EDIT: Please move this thread to other room
I don't know - should you?
Only you can answer that question! When I bought my Hero, it was the best Android phone on the market - nearly 6 months down the line there are more powerful alternatives (e.g. Milestone, Nexus One etc) and that is hardly surprising.
Personally, I'm going to wait and see how 2.1 pans out for the Hero before jumping ship to something else, but I do expect to be running something different in 6 months time at the outside.
Regards,
Dave
im not, im going to wait for htc to bring out there next android, i feel as if the nexus hasnt quite been made as good as it could be and htc is holding out slightly, feel its worth waiting for there next one. Also i love my hero its quick enough for me and im sure nexus will be a pain to root for a while.
it's already rooted. and cyanogen will get one - which means i will ditch my hero and hope to get enough money out of it to make the hit in my budget bearable.
edit: the most compelling reason aside from speed is that HTC is PITA when it comes to releasing the GPL parts.

The Nexus One *is* an HTC phone!
Regards,
Dave
I think he means that is is a google experience phone rather than the Hero is not, ie no sense and stock android. Personally I would wait to see how the HTC Bravo/ Passion is. (its basically the same as the nexus one just with sense and htc stuff)
how long did the magic guys wait for kernel sources? i was under the impression that the google experience phones always have a working msm kernel? is this a wrong assumption?
Guys, after doing some searching I also like the Milestone because of its design.
What do you personally think about the design of the Milestone and nexus? I think Milestone will win because the Nexus looks like plastic (the same as the hero's)
i agree milestone or droid or w/e is a slick looking phone! but the ui isnt for me...
also i love sense, and the look of nexus isnt for me eitherr..
i do know that my next phone will prob be htc sense ontop of android 3.0 on a slick looking phone with a 1 ghz processorr! - - cant waiit! haha
so id say if you have to ask, dont bother because soon enough you wont even have to ask yourself, it will be like OMG i neeed that phone! aha

The Hero, worth purchasing?

I am selling my iPhone right now to buy a hero locally for $250. Im jumping on the deal, because I love the phone, android and everything.
The only thing I don't like is the fact that I wont be able to use my 3G with AT&T.
Is EDGE going to be painfully slow on the Hero?
Should I not buy the 100, and try to buy a 300?
Because there's no way in hell I'm going to get one for this price!

Edge is painfully slow compared to 3g once you have experienced it.
I got the phone today. I've been using EDGE, and AT&T isn't that bad at all. Things seem fine. I'm sure 3G would be faster, but for now I don't mind at all.
let us know.. what u think between..
the phones
and the data speeds.
BTW: welcome to android
I'm going to buy a new mobile phone...
I had in mind HTC Hero and Motorola Milestone...
For now I use E71, but I'm looking to change OS (from Symbian to Android)
But, I can't make up my mind...
HTC Hero would be cheaper (Moto Milestone would cost more)
But, realy, I need your help, to tell me witch phone is better...
witch would you recomend?
hero is an awesome phone. i have been using it for last 5 months. but the problem is that developers are abandoning hero for nexus one. many modders have already bought nexus one and have stopped working on hero anymore and its quite logicla that why they will develop roms for an older phone while they have a pone with 1 ghz processor. as said developement of hero roms, themes, apps have become pretty slow for last 1-1.5 months and it will become worse. so right now buying hero isnt a very good idea in my honest opinion. better buy nexus one which is all interested in. cheers
Hero is an excellent phone. However, I'd personally go for the Nexus One right now.
I'll be developing for the Hero until this time next year, when my contract runs out
Update on my Hero.
I enjoy this phone much much more than my iPhone. Multitasking, customization, everything I wished I could do on my iPhone I can now do with my Hero.
The EDGE speed sometimes gets to me, such as when downloading applications. 3G is definitely faster, but the difference isn't so much that I regret my decision.
As for people updating and developing new Hero roms, I don't see why every dev would switch to the Nexus one. Yes, it's better, but I'm sure they understand that not everyone has a Nexus one. It would make no sense to just develop Nexus roms.\
I love everything about the Hero. I have the European version, so I have the chin, which I really like. I like having physical buttons on the outside too!

The vast majority of developers will likely only develop for phones they currently have/use. If a Hero developer buys a Nexus, there is a strong possibility that they would abandon support for the Hero, because they have little incentive to do so.
There are exceptions of course - Paul @ MoDaCo still supports the Hero even though he has a Nexus, but the speed of his releases has definitely slowed. However, this may be due to the fact that there is little new material out there to work with.

Dave
THX.
but, is it better to buy Milstone or Hero now??
If I were you, I'd buy neither - I'd get a HTC Desire when it is released in the next couple of months.

[Q] HTC Desire HD

So over the last couple weeks I’ve been looking in to purchasing a new phone, and to be honest it has been pretty difficult deciding which new phone to get. As I’m sure everyone has, I’ve taken at the iPhone 4 and I have to admit that the apps and such that it offers are impressive. I’m not sure what it is, but there’s something about the iPhone that just doesn’t do it for me though. Instead I’ve been getting pretty excited, like others, about the upcoming HTC Desire HD and although information about the phone is moslty based on rumors I still believe that this phone will be phenominal.
The phone will supposedly run Adroid 2.2 which will allow the phone’s cpu to run up to 2-5 times faster with the OS. This massive change is just between 2.1 and 2.2 and with future Android updates I’m sure that the Adroid OS will only help the HTC Desire HD reach an even higher potential. From what I’ve seen of the original HTC Desire, this phone will be awesome, but if I need a phone soon is it really worth the wait?
Eh. Personally, I don’t think there’s anything HTC will be able to do to keep up with Apple and the iPhone line. Everything that it comes out with seems to be always a day late and a dollar short. The fact that there are barely any apps for the HTC and the fact that the iPhone has the full strength of many veteran app designers behind it means that the iPhone will always be better. My opinion, buy the iPhone4.
what does any of this have to do with the HTC HD2???

Lol this did make me laugh, I know Apple invented video calls three months ago, and gimmicky apps definately make a phone.
The fact they made a phone with a 1Ghz processor and lesser specs than a HD2 eight months after it's release. And less than six months before HTC are on the cusp of releasing a dual core mobile processor with a brand new OS. But yeah, you're right, HTC will never be able to keep up.

I wouldn't call it iPhone bashing, it's just stating facts, with a little sarcasm tacked on for good measure!
The only plus for apple is it's stability.
On the other hand Apple keeps their mobiles low spec, so less chance for errors/problems.
The thing that affronts me the most is the fact that Steve Jobs determines wether apps can be installed or not (remember the "nude" app?), although by this testing / approving of software the phone is more stabe, the manufacturer decides what you can do with your phone, really: Big Brother (steve) is watching you.
Exactly for that reason I do not believe it is a good business phone... it is a good n00b-phone.
Agree

I agree with Wilco on this one. I really do hate the fact that Steve Jobs has got his hand in everything little thing you’re able to do with the iPhone. A smart phone to me is almost like laptop nowadays, and for that reason I feel like I should be able to run anything I wish, whether it be stable for the phone or not. If it weren’t for that “affront” as Wilco says, I ‘d probably be jumping on the iPhone bandwagon with much less resistance.

[Q] What phone will you buy next?...

Hy guys
1.What's the next phone that you want to buy?
2.Thinking about a nokia with WP7 or an iPhone ???
Please motivate your posts...i just want to see what you guys think around here
Haha, you made a new thread, I saw your post in that other thread
On-topic: 1:What I know is that next spring/ summer I will probably buy *something*. Either a tab or a phone, it depends on how cheap the tabs have gotten. It will either have dual-core or quad-core, we'll see if phones really need more in the future, it all depends on the software development. I don't know if HTC or Samsung and I don't even know if I'm buying Android. It will of course be something Linux, but there are some other nice projects like WebOS and MeeGo as well out there I'm not that found of HTC Sense and I prefer Go Launcher, but as I'm very fond of my HTC phone and Samsung is a bit plastic... Last, if I buy a phone, I want it to have a 3.7 or 4 inch screen. I think 4.3 is too big, but I still want that awesome hardware of the 4.3 phones
2: iPhone: NO WAY!!! Many iPhone guys say that Android is for those who cannot afford iPhone, I say iPhone is for those who are too stupid for Android
Nokia: ... Probably not, as they're going for Windows which is not as open as these other awesome OS
thanks for the post...as i wrote, i just want to see how hero users will go with the next generation of phones or tablets...seems that i'm not the only one that thinks about a tablet instead a phone...

I still have my Hero
Moved on to HTC HD7 - windows phone loved it but NODO didnt help me much

Currently enjoying my SAMSUNG GALAXY S2 - Android Phone and love they way I can flash all the latest firmwares without the need to root
So for you I would suggest Either wait for Nokia to come out with windows phone (SEARAY is their first phone to come out )
or
Wait of NEXUS PRIME / MIUI PHONE / or IPHONE 5 which ever takes your fancy
I'm going for the HTC HD2.

[Q] Not just your average help me decide thread.

Alright, I am not here to discuss the hardware of the HTC Amaze. I am in the workings of getting a new phone obviously my choices lay between the Amaze and Galaxy S2. I have had an android phone since the G1 and now have the G2. My question (and I am not hating) even though this phone is in the early stages of its lifecycle, do you guys think that the dev support for this phone will be like it is for the G2?
I realize the hard work the devs are doing for this phone (xboarder) and like, I appreciate all the work they do, cause without them we would have nothing. If I knew half the things you guys do about the android file system I am just wondering what the possibilites are?
Please no flaming or trolling, very disrespectful.

I think that most members around here would agree that the devs are waiting for ICS to be released for the Amaze before they start doing some hardcore stuff.
The ROMs are here, don't get me wrong but we only have about 3 or 4 devs by my count that are pushing out all those ROMs.
Xboarder himself has got like 4 to 5 that he already has out or is working on.
I'd like to believe that when ICS hits we would draw other devs.
Although that's not a for sure thing.
Either way, having it announced that ICS WILL come to the Amaze is enough of a reason to pick it up as your first choice, right?
To sum it all up we're waiting for ICS and true S-Off.
I'm sure with those two things in hand ROMs will take off.
Hope that helps.
I totally agree on the count of ICS, a lot of the devices are going through the same "dry spell." It does help, it nice to have a little reassurance, you know?
Thanks
The Amaze has great dev support (albeit from one, but he's awesome) but I don't think it'll be anything like the G2 was. The G2 had two main things going for it: first, it was a stock Android experience. Second, Steve Kondik (cyanogen) had told many people that he was going to be using the device as a daily driver. So many devs flocked his way. Let's just say the only reason I have the Amaze right now is because my G2 stopped working and I didn't know where to get another one. It was all the phone I needed at the time, and was trying to hold out for the Nexus.
I think the GS2 has better support for now, but that should change once ICS drops. If you really want a ton of development support, I say go for the Nexus. Me, I'm happy with the Amaze and QuickSense!

Good point, I wish I could wait for the Nexas, but I am selling my G2 to a family member and I told them I would this month. <-Dilemma
What made you choose the Amaze, if you don't mind me asking? I love my HTC phones, it would be different having a Samsung.
I made the same lineage, g1 to g2. And tbh I couldn't imagine using a phone that isn't htc (quality wise), I know the dev'ing will never be @ the g2 level, but we have some awesome devs and a strong device with promise of ics.
The zero lag shutter and unified sense 3.0 ui was an easy sell for me. If Samsung had produced the all white ver. sans that terrible touch wiz at the time of my purchase I might have made a different choice.

It compared them side by side in the store and for all the hype of the SAMOLED+ screen, it kinda reminded me of the original iPhone - less pixels stretched over a bigger screen. The Amaze looked great. PPI is where it's at!
I would rather have had the Samsung from a development standpoint (no locked bootloader and such) but the screen in the GS2 sucked balls.

^agreed on both counts^
Which is why I'm still considering the Nexus... no locked bootloader BS and it has an even higher PPI than the Amaze (over 300 vs ~250). The best of both worlds!
I for one believe development is doing great for the lack of open sources. The thing is that the amaze is really great straight out of the box that little development actual needs to be done except we all want custom kernels which would help our battery life and heck make it even smoother.
A lot of other phones development section has a lot of support but not all the roms and kernels being developed are being used, so you shouldn't compare and say since some phones has a lot of roms it has better support. I for one want quality over quantity.
But honestly once things are fully released for the amaze, developers will come. However, not many would want to compile a ROM or kernel from scratch like x and faux are working on. remember this phone is barely 2 months old. You'll see a huge expansion by January.

Can't you just install Launcher Pro (or similar)? That should replace Touchwiz.

TouchWiz and Sense both are throughout the entire OS. Replacing the launcher only really fixes the homescreen.

Ah. I thought the problem was with the homescreen arrangement. I acutally like the Sense enhancements like the extra widgets & etc.
Last month I was forced to decide between an Amaze and a Galaxy S2.
I also had a G1 and a G2. I used the vibrant for a while but i preferred my G2 mainly b/c of the keyboard. I played with the Amaze and the S2. I preferred the amaze because i would choose sense over touchwiz. And what really drew me to the amaze was the qHD resolution. If the s2 had a qHD resolution, i think i'd still be deciding what i want. Hope this helps
