iPhone - Droid Eris General

So it looks like 1/11/11 @ 11:11 the Verizon iPhone will come.
Who is jumping ship?
I am about 90% sure I will be, what do I need to do to wipe my phone of root and all of my data?
Thanks,

Thanks for the post!

dont know if/when its coming to verizon is true and dont care. With root access, the rate of android development and the amount of devices to choose from I have no desire to leave android. Much more likely to leave verizon than android lol. I mean really I dont understand why anyone who wants an iphone doesn't just use AT&T and have one.

I don't get a signal from at&t at home, so that's why I stayed with Verizon Wireless and changed from (crappy) WM to Android.
I'm glad that VZW is getting the iPhone - more competition is always good for everybody, and they are damned good smartphones. I'm a bit tempted, but I've grown fond of Android, I've used Gmail and Google Calendar for a long time, I vastly prefer Android's notifications to iOS's, and I have a Touch 4G anyway, so I can get anything I need from iOS with that.
My new every 2 comes in August, and by then there will be a new iPhone, and likely new Android phones as well. So long as my Eris lasts that long, I'm thinking that waiting until after the iPhone 5G comes out is the smartest thing for me (whether I choose that or Android) in the long run.

Good post, thanks!

I know I personally am tempted to use the iPhone only because it's still so absolutely supported. When a company says "we've gone mobile" they usually mean they have an iPhone app... and if I'm lucky I'll get an android app a month or more later.
This can be seen with netflix. I love the idea of netflix on a phone, but android doesn't have it. Why? Simply because netflix hasn't gotten around to it.
When you're on the iPhone you have the satisfaction of knowing that you're a "priority customer" for companies.
The fact is I still won't go with the iPhone because I enjoy the Android OS far too much. I personally think it is flawed to the core in some areas, but then again so is iOS so I'm not complaining.

I'll be jumping ship to the iPhone. Don't get me wrong... I love my Eris and it's been good to me, especially with the good community here at XDA.
I've always wanted an iPhone and it'll go good with my iPad! Can't wait for it on VZW!

I plan on ditching my Eris here soon hopefully, but it will not be for an iPhone. I have bought into the Android ecosystem with apps for my phone, and my tablet. I'm however very interested in the Droid Bionic that was announced at CES.

My #1 reason for jumping ship...
I am tired of my sister, brother, brother-in-law coming to me and saying hey check out this cool new app/game.....do you have it on Android yet?
Me: No.... and they don't mention any development for Android on their site.

i think that the android community as a whole is going to suffer greatly from the arrival of iphone. the vast majority of android users dont root their phones, and have not been able to utilize android in the same way that we have. the ones that purchased their android when it first came to verizon and didnt root, are stuck with an unsupported phone. iphone is really appealing to the average user. i see many people ditching google to go with apple.
i dont plan on changing any time soon to the iphone simply because it will not be 4G, doesnt have the customization aspects that android does with root and whatnot, and in june they will have the iphone 5 coming out. its a little suspect that verizon is coming out with the iphone 4, 6 months before the new iphone is slated to come out. i see a lot of hardware/software issues arising due to the fact verizon is trying to push this out as fast as they can to cash in on the people that buy it mid contract. it also helps that they are changing their upgrade policies right before this phone comes out to try to entice people to upgrade now
/rant

This may be a bit off topic, but I'm really dissapointed in the direction verizon is going as far as the upgrade/NE2 goes. Honestly I'm going to be changing carriers next year when my contract is up. I just hope other carriers don't follow big reds direction.
Also, I'm not looking forward to 4g. They are going to charge out the butt for it and cap data usage. Doesn't sound fun to me... of course I'm sure most if not all carriers are going to do the same

Forget Sprint and T-Mobile - they are smaller, so will always be more aggressive. Does AT&T do anything like this? I remember last year when the iPhone 4 came out they made a big deal about the fact that anybody whose contract was due in 2010 was eligible for an early upgrade to the 4, but that was only the iPhone 4 and was, at best, 6 months early. Verizon sets theirs at 2 months early for one year contracts and 4 months early for two year contracts for everybody with this (rumored) policy change.
Honestly, I don't know what AT&T does, but I thought that Verizon was always better about this?

Evidence? At this point it's just a guess. If we base our guess on the data plans for modems, you may be surprised. In the past, 3G modems were capped at 5 GB and priced $60 per month (while smartphone data plans were unlimited and priced at $30 a month). 4G data plans for modems are $50 a month for 5 GB and $80 a month for 10 GB. I'm not sure that I would call that "charging out the butt".
We do know what Sprint does for 4G smartphones - they do not cap and surcharge $10 more per month, right? It seems reasonable that VZW will do something similar, or at least not out of that neighborhood.

I for one will be getting one as soon as they're available. Why? Well, I have three lines and the third is up for upgrade at any time. My primary line is up for upgrade in October this year so if I don't like the iPhone I can always go back to Android.
Another reason is that it's a damn sexy phone, no matter what people may say about it.
Eventually they'll have Android running on the iPhone 4, (it's already sort of working on the 3GS) so I could always have the looks and the OS that I've grown to like. I won't switch to AT&T simply for the reason that I get a 20% business discount on Verizon and I've been with Verizon since before the iPhone was introduced. I've waited this long for it, I've been wanting one since it came out, so I'll at least have to buy one to see how it compares to my Eris. (And Android in general) I have an iPod Touch so I'm familiar with iOS, so I'm not too worried about that.
Besides, everything else in the house is Apple, might as well have the dang phone too!

Didnt read through all posts, but iPhone 4 comes to Verizon 02/11/11 @ 12:00am. IPhone 5 is rumored to arrive at Verizon in July, with a new body and possibly LTE. But as stated, it is rumored. I'm adding s line to have both android and apple OS.

Im an Android fanboy, nope.

I (thought) I'd be ready to jump to iphone first chance but now that I can I'm having second thoughts. My rooted eris is so great. I might just stick with HTC/Droid and go for the incredible HD. I'm itching for something but at the same time I'm very happy with what I have.

i wouldnt buy iphoney lol ,,,,, first flaw ,,, whos bright idea was it not to have a door for the battery? lol im not gunna send my phone out and wait a few dayz to get it back because the battery died lol two hate the look of it ,,,,and i love the freedom of android

Since i have recently ditched all my Apple stuff, know way. I'm thinking Droid Bionic, unless HTC breaks out a dual-core with 1 gb of ram... I'm counting the days until my July upgrade date!

I'm not jumping because I personally think that Android in a few years will kill the iPhone, iPhone's been around a while and you know how things go... electronics last 5-6 years (estimate), then die out completely to a competitor. So, iPhone has had it's time, and Android is going to overtake Apple. Second of all, it's GOOGLE GODDAMNIT!
P.S. There's 26 Letters in the Alphabet, we're only on 6.

[Q] What phone will you be upgrading to :D

I know one of these shows up every once and a while, but now that the selection of phones has grown quite a bit over the past two days, and the holiday season is coming soon, I was curious; What phone do you plan on upgrading to?
[Edit]
Oh ya, I plan on getting the Galaxy Nexus in late November :3 I have always wanted a Nexus on Verizon. That with a grandfathered unlimited plan? YAY!
I will get whatever quad core phone is out when I can renew (in January ) as long as it's 4g, I'll be happy
Sent from my Eris using xda premium
Oops, I didn't think to include a "Better future phone" as a poll option, sorry all :3
I had a Bionic for a little while, but exchanged it for a Droid 3 the other day. The Bionic kept dropping data randomly, in spots where I knew there was a great 3G signal. I really don't need 4G bandwidth on a phone anyway, was looking for a solid radio for a change that wouldn't stutter or drop calls (so, Moto was a plus), the world phone is a plus. I know that all of the 4G phones have had data issues, and I wanted something I could count on while Verizon works out the 4G bugs. The D3 is still dual core, and has the same qHD on a smaller display. Bonus: it's a world phone. I may be traveling to Europe during this contract.
Also, the Bionic was really too big for what I wanted, so, to me, the Nexus looks like Maxwell Smart's shoe phone. I think I'd go Razr over the Nexus if I wanted a 4G phone, but that's me.
If I had to upgrade today, it would be the HTC Thunderbolt. It's not perfect, but when I played with one in the Verizon store it seemed slick and faster than the Incredible 2.
I like HTC since Motorola has been hostile to people who want to root their phones, and Samsung has lagged on updating to newer versions of Android.
Now that HTC has decided to pay blackmail to Microsoft over patent suits (like Samsung and several others), they're no longer pure. Motorola is the only company that hasn't bent over for Microsoft and I hope they stand up and sue to prove Microsoft is bluffing.
So who knows what things will look like in January when I upgrade. I might be buying a Motorola.

The He** with Sprint!!!

OK, #1, yes I know the forum rules (Not to bash, keep it clean, no religious stuff............) and I have not in my years here, broke them! BUT, I feel every now and then, I should be entiled to a free one? Today is that day!!
I say f**k Sprint! I was over at SprintFeed.com and Sprint has announced the EOL (End of Life) for Photon next month! I will tell you exactly why this pisses me off!!
#1 (Yea I know #1 is above, im starting over!). I went out and got the damm Evo for $500.00 summer of 2010. Last summer, Sprint blasted the TV with the Evo 3D but only one or 2 commercials for Photon. Photon, IMO, was and is, 100 times better than3D in every way, But Sprint blasted the damm Evo. I dont need a toy, I need a bussiness phone that will assist me in getting the job done. So I pay $638.00, no contract for Photon with 4G August 2, 2011.
#2. I work in IT, I have million $$$ ideas all the time, but it takes me 6 months to a year before anything actually gets done (plan, summary, approval, check, delivery) Therefore, with the November announcement of LTE, they knew damm right well when get got our phones, many of us, me included, did not have 4G and never would have it!! So the sales was entierly a lie!!!! (And to be honest, I cannot recall a TV commercial after August but I still see crap for the toy 3D!)
#3. If end of life is next month, then Q3 ICS is more smoke getting blown up our a**es!!
#4. With this announcement, my $638.00 Photon just became a worthless paperweight! Why? How much are you willing to pay me for my Photon, knowing that if it breaks or f**k's up one week later, your SOL? Seriously? This goes for anything in life! Would you pay top dollar for a I.B.M Thinkpad you know I.B.M no longer supports? NO!!!!
#5. Why is the original Evo still supported, but we did not even get a year? How come everyone got unlocked bootloader and ROM's out the a**? What did we get? Not a damm thing!!! (The development team here worked hard, but Sprint showed no support for them at all!!!)
#6. Also on SprintFeed.com, HTC and Sprint have big announcement April 4th where it is expected they will announce the new EVO for June 10th release date. If the spec's are whats expected, I will jump ship. Whats that gonna cost me?
#7. All so on that website, Wall Street had lowered the boom on Sprint. This means 2 things. They don't have the money they claim they have and could go bankrupt. and what happens to the LTE project and will I ever see 4G?
I just think, IMO, that this is a complete slap in the face to every Photon owner!!!
End of Rant!!

Huh, that's so weird, my Photon is still working great. I hope the devs here at XDA can come up with some kind of mod that blocks the worthless paperweight update.
Its not that serious bro, its just a phone. I love my photon and there's nothing sprint can do to change that.

Dude!!!..... I can't complain abut my Photon, the 4 months or so it has been with me has NEVER let me down one bit, to this day it is the BEST phone I have ever owned, the international capabilities which I was finally able to try on a trip to Mexico last week made me love it even more. I was able to use a Telcel Sim card and used all the features in my phone with no problems no errors no nothing.
(Actually to my surprise Telcel's 3G speeds are awesome compared to Sprint's)
But sadly every phones has an EOL and technology is improving every second..
I don't really see the point of even have a fit about it LOL
Seeing that I no longer work for Sprint I have no issue saying this. Sprint half-assed the handling of the Photon since day one. Considering Sprint's history with Moto Android phones they had no faith in Moto's product and made no real effort to support or push the Photon. This started before the phone was ever released.
Sprint had the update fix for the silent call bug over a month PRIOR to the release of the Photon. Instead of pushing the update on launch day they held off for a month before releasing the fix. So you have a new phone with a major bug that didn't get fixed til after the crucial launch month window had passed. Result, a new phone that doesn't work for enough people to kill sales.
Sprint advertising and sales training was also almost nonexistant. In many cases it was "and Moto makes phones too but who cares" kind of approach. I had setup a live WebTop display running Firefox streaming HULU in the store I worked in. Customers thought it was the Evo 3D and didn't even know the Photon even existed. The first response when told it wasn't the 3D was "Yeh but the 3D can do that too." and very rarely could you convince them otherwise.
In short, Sprint could care less if they ever sell another Moto Android phone and have treated the Photon with that mindset from the start. They can now go back to Moto and say "Look, your crappy phone doesn't sell so no Sprint for you."
Just because it will reach EOL status doesn't mean a whole lot to me. I started with the original Droid on Verizon and EOL was reached a loooong time ago on it and a small update was recently available for it! And there is still development going on for it as well. As long as we have some good devs that still care about it, EOL status is irrelevant.
oh well, fun while it lasted, i upgraded to the photon over my OG evo, loved it since day one, i recently went back to my EVO 3D, so when the ICS update comes out (as promised i hope) i'll update my photon and go back to it, but when it's completely gone, all i'll say is, i have a rare sprint phone (just like my echo) that not a lot of people have, and wait for the newest smartphone to come out
You do realize that all Wimax phones will be going EOL come about Summer when lte launches. And everybody else is right EOL just means they start to pull inventory from the stores no biggie. like the evo shift, epic, nexus, and trender i work at a store and we haven't gotten a shipment for them in 2 weeks and we are out.

Agreed
As I'm sure MOST people who own a MoPho agree, this phone needs much more love from the dev community, I love this phone in it's natural form! I had an OG Evo 4G and modding it was the only thing I could do to keep it up and running. This phone KILLS IT out of the box! The Tegra 2 is incredibly smooth.
I really want ICS for it, but I'll have this MoPho for A LOT longer than my crap EVO.
Signed,
A faithful first time Moto owner

Also, If this phone IS EOL soon, does that mean it WILL get unlocked? Just curious if they didn't care about a phone anymore, they would UNLOCK the bootloader for us.

Nope. It means no updates, support or unlock from official channels. Sprint will still repair/replace it but short of PRL and critical security updates, the phone doesn't exist to Sprint after the EOL date. I'd also expect this to kill the ICS update as well as it will not have passed Sprint's internal "QC and testing" and I do not believe Moto has authorization for a direct push.

I really hope that's not true - since they've officially announced the ICS update for the Photon, I would hope they keep their word. Although I've been frustrated with all the dead links throughout the forums here, I have been still very happy with the Photon vs the Evo so far, it's an amazing device.
Sprint's got me barely hanging on by halving my bill while the network upgrades supposedly happen -- but if speeds don't increase and awesome devices like this aren't supported, I'll be joining the hordes jumping ship to Verizon.

I hope this works out for Sprint. In two years, no iDen or WiMax networks. That should greatly cut costs.
I use to love Sprint, but now it's just like they're in the business of hooking you in for the business and then coming up with ways to increase your bill. I use to have 5 lines, all qualified for the company discount, then only 2, and now only 1. I've transferred my phone over to Google, so that moving forward I can switch between companies with minimal inconveniences. Sprint essentially has no high-end world phones....
OK, Most of you are missing the entire point! I have NO problems with my Photon. I LOVE MY PHONE!!!
Go back and read post #5 and #10 by lokifish Marz. Sprint s**t on this phone from day 1!! I said it in my OP, he confirmed it as a ex-Sprint empolyee!!!
I will tell you a funny story. August 20th 2011 my power button fell out, so I had to use my finger nail to cut it on/off. Me and 2 co-workers took it to Sprint at the Garden State Plaza on RT4 in New Jersey. Chick tells me, "I have one of the tech look at it!" No problem. This idiot comes from the back and the first thing out of his mouth, "Have you had this phone for 30 days or less?" Just like lokifish Marz said, no training and no marketing!
As for XDA Development, most of the heavy hitters have jump ship and do cleanup work here (which we are thankful!)
Now the new EVO is something to brag about, no doubt. But August 1st of 2011, This was by far the best phone available from ANY carrier, and Sprint gave it no love!
EOL would kinda suck as I was planning to keep this until March when my contract is up, then re-evaluate if I want to keep Sprint.
On the other hand, I do remember back in September the Evo 4g was on the EOL list for October. It still has not gone EOL. Then again that was a far more popular phone.

Its back on the list for "Early April". I dont get why EVO 3D is not on the list and Photon is?
Before getting the Photon, I had a Droid Eris on Verizon and I went through the same thing. Thanks to the xda devs and community, I was able to squeeze 2 years out of it. Before rooting and loading a custom rom, using the phone was a nightmare.
I guess I'm getting used to, and have the unfortunate luck, of buying the devices that receive the least support down the road. I chose Sprint, because I thought they were somehow less evil than Verizon but corporations will be corporations.
I still hope the Photon will have a long life after losing official support. I love the phone itself.

This sounds very familiar to me, except for me it was the Palm Pre instead of the Droid Eris. I'm starting to think I'm a curse - if I like a phone, prepare for it to turn into a stepchild and let the bitterness begin. Maybe I should go buy an iPhone and see if I can kill it...

you feel the Nexus is a good upgrade from coming EVO?

General verizon upgrade question

So I recently (3 months ago) complained enough to verizon to get them to swap my iPhone 4 for a DX2 because of an insurmountable number of dropped calls on the iDevice. Now they pressured me into choosing a phone on the spot and I picked the X2 without having too many options. Had I known of the locked bootloader I would have chosen a bit differently
So what I am wondering is how do you guys always have top of the line phones right after they come out? Is there some way I could get a Razr or Nexus S or Charge from Verizon for the subsidized price before hitting my contract renewal date?
I like my DX2 but would like something with a bit more power and lot more ICS.
Thanks for any advice!

Some people get really lucky and verizon gives them sweet upgrades if you complain to the right people. Some other people just pony up the good x-amount of money and buy a new phone. Hell, I'm thinking about putting up $300-$400 for a used Nexus. My X2s hardware is crapping out hard core and I'm not about to settle for another X2.

There are a couple of ways to try to get the top of the line phones as soon as they are released. There's always the "complain until you're upgraded" route, but very rarely will the carries provide the newest/top of the line phone as your replacement. If you time your contract right, your upgrade will fall during the times when phones are generally released. For example, I got my phone in June. My 1 1/2 year mark will fall on the month of December. Tons of phones are released prior to the holidays. Also, many people will manipulate family contracts and "swap" upgrades. Other than that, you could try to find it online at a discounted price (which will never be as low as the contract extension price) and just buy it off contract.

Verizon Wireless galaxy S IV THOUGHTS.

Samsung isn't planning on releasing this phone on the big red until MAY30 WHICH is very close to June and isn't there going to be a couple phone in June around that same type with the new snapdragon 800 like that new moto phone coming out so I'm.curious wouldn't the new phone in June play the new gs4 obsolete ? Samsung gs4 release so late will make it its own demise ! why is Verizon releasing this phone so late i mean if there's a phone within the same month of the gs4 with twice the power then I won't consider the gs4 when I can wait just 2 weeks and buy somethin much more superior in hardware and stock android Samsung is about to lose a tons of money on Verizon if they wait all th way to may30 around the same month as sum very new phones with double the power .... Why didnt the gs4 release earlier ?? in may when moto announces there phone which will prob kill the gs4 in every way specs and software within 3week after the gs4 comes to store everyone will cancel there preorders and just wait and extra 3week to get the most powerful phone with a better screen n better snapdragon n prob more sensors and better battery and full stock android!

That doesn't make a lot of sense. People in the U.S. typically get new phones when they become eligible so there's a steady stream of people year round looking to buy new phones no matter when they are released. People buy what pleases them. The DNA tanked on VZW and there were no other phones released before it or after it that caused its failure. And it was powerful and had the world's first 1080P display. People are still buying SGS3's in large quantities and probably will after the SGS4's out because the price will be reduced. The SGS4 will be on the market as a "flagship" for 9-12 months and Samsung's planning on selling 10MM a month. HTC, Motorola, LG, and Sony all introduced phones that competed with the SGS3 and it certainly didn't affect Samsung's sales last year. So there's no reason to expect it to this year either. And the average consumer doesn't know (or care) what a Snapdragon, Exynos, or Octa is.
Plenty of hot new phones came out after the Galaxy S3's July release in the U.S. like the Razr Maxx HD, Nexus 4, etc. yet the GS3 outsold all of them by a huge margin. The average consumer doesn't buy phones based mainly on hardware specs.
Verizon is launching it on may 23rd, not may 30th. I went to Verizon yesterday and there was a Samsung rep there showing the employees the s4 and they said the official launch date is the 23rd. I know that's still three weeks later than the rest, but at least its a week earlier than may 30th. I gotta question, is verizons s4 going to be harder to unlock and root than the rest of them? I heard Verizon likes to lock them down, and I've never owned a smartphone I've been holding out for this one. I own a nexus 7 which is obviously the easiest to unlock and root. But i know the s4 is a huge release so I'm kinda assuming that there will be a solid method to root for Verizon. Am i right?
According to official PR from Samsung today, it will be on all major US carriers by the end of April. I'm guessing April 30th.
The Galaxy S 4 is optimized for powerful performance on the nation’s fastest networks and will be available on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless as well as U.S. Cellular, Cricket and C Spire starting during April. Additionally, consumers can find the Galaxy S 4 at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile, Costco, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, Staples, Target and Wal-Mart. Exact pricing and retail availability will be announced by each of the carriers and retailers in the coming weeks.

Available to carriers and carriers making the phone available to consumers are two different things.
And for the OP... i am not sure how new phones will make the s4 obsolete? a cpu does not a phone make....

But it says available on not to... I'm staying optimistic!
It also says "starting in april" that could mean that just one or a few carriers will roll it out in April.

I.D.K. why the O.P. is saying that the galaxy s4 would be obsolete soon i mean come on the motorla x phone right now is just a nice looking rumor plus a processor in a phone doesn't make all that difference because maybe you saw last year's htc one X+ it smoked the galaxy but the battery was really bad plus i hardly ever think android needs more power right now they need to be more battery friendly and better screen really what do you want more than 441ppi ?? anyway looking at all those gs4 specs and concediring what happened with last year's gs3 i can tell you that the galaxy won't go down till the gs5 is out so don't worry if verizon goes a few weeks later than everyone else it will still sell like hot cakes.
I still have unlimited internet after 4/21 can I buy new galaxy s4 cell using the new 12 month payment plan that's effective on 4/21 without upgrading to the 200sub? Does anyone know I think everyone who still has unlimited internet should ask Verizon this.. I wanna get the new s4 but keep my unlimited internet so will this 12month thing work for me?

I am going to tell you right now that Verizon's phones are the worst due to the spyware they bloat them up with. I hope they do as little to it as possible and there's no way verizon is going to pay for a S800 S4. They are cheap when it comes to there phones and replacing one that has gone bad is near impossible unless you take them to the FCC. If they ever touch my unlimited, I am gone with out a hint of doubt.

I actually find that replacing phones is very easy on verizon compared to sprint. I had sprint in the past and their customer service was atrocious. The Fascinate (Verizon Galaxy S) apparently had lots of problems, and they kept getting replaced until the Droid Charge came out, when Verizon just started giving out Charges to replace Fascinates.
The Charge had some problems too, and if you got enough bad ones from them, they even started handing out the Bionic, Rezound, and Razr too (phones that came out later with much higher specs). I even bricked my Charge and they just gave me a new one.

They had to post something. The basically are going to be releasing with the third world, lol. Its ALWAYS something with them. They did their best to wreck the galaxy nexus, they were in on the Carrier IQ scandal, they have to plaster their dated logo on everything, and they sell pretty much the most bloated phones in existence. Yes, they have a good network, but frankly, I live in DFW...all the carriers have good networks here. It's flat, populated and affluent.
I have an upgrade, but their delay conveniently puts me within a month of my contract ending. My wife gets a ~25% discount through work, but I can get 15% on T-Mobile, and with the massive price difference, it actually makes T-mobile a better deal. I may even pickup up a used N4, get the $30 walmart plan thing, and wait for the Note III.
I guess as someone that pays attention and is tired of getting screwed and treated like an idiot sheep, I am just not their target market.

I don't know exactly which options you're choosing, but if you do the math I suspect you'll find that T-Mobile isn't the better deal. I've been doing research recently for an upgrade myself, and I found that corporate discounts actually significantly narrow the gap between T-Mobile and Verizon. Reason is because with T-Mobile ditching subsidies but lowering the monthly bill, the value of a discount on that smaller monthly bill is proportionately less. If you factor in the fact that a full price GS4 on T-Mobile is $630 vs $200 for Verizon, Verizon might actually come out ahead over the course of 2 years.

If he used like 1GB a month sure it would cost less, but Verizon's network has really gone down the drain in the bigger citys. May as well have sprint 3G at times it get's so bad. Now if you live in bum ville sure Verzion win's. But he live's in the city so data speeds will be better on T-moblie.
Also no unlimited data any more with verizon and those like me that still have it get throttled.

If you're considering using an upgrade, that means you don't have unlimited, in which case my question is... why bother with VZ?

It's not throttled. When the network isn't congested (as you say, places like NYC during the day are crap) I still get great speeds.

[Q] Upgrade to HTC One or wait? I know, I know...

OK, I know this question gets old, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I'm currently on a 4G LTE and became upgrade eligible on 8/1. The One seems like the no-brainer choice right now, but I'm reading a lot about upcoming phones like Nexus 5, Moto X, upcoming Sony phone, LG G2, etc. What would you guys do in my shoes?
My wife becomes upgrade eligible on 2/1, so I'm considering swapping my upgrade with her for now so that she can move from her iPhone 4s to the 5 (or 5s in Sept) and finally have 4G while I wait a few months for something else. That said, in the cell phone upgrade game, there's ALWAYS going to be something amazing on the horizon -- that's what makes these decision brutal. I've had every Evo since the OG, and right now I'm basically happy with my 4G LTE: rooted, S-Off, get 4G in my area, use tethering extensively, like the look/feel, and I love the kickstand. That said, some cons are that I'm not crazy about the battery life, I get launcher crashes fairly regularly on stock Sense and most Sense roms, and I don't feel that the radio is the strongest -- particularly at switching from 3G to 4G.
Thoughts?
One Max with bigger screen and faster processor, g2 with all x3 sprint lte band. The red One looks alright too. moto x is just soso with slower processor and lower resolution screen.

I'm in a similar boat but it's my wife that has the upgrade as of 8/1 and I just upgraded to the One at launch. She doesn't care much about her phone so long as it gets Facebook, has a good camera and can last her the day on one charge. We're waiting until the holiday season to see what devices are announced and what discounts are available. I'd suggest the same if you can wait. I wouldn't be able to and would have a One on 8/1, . I'm impatient. But if you're happy enough with your current device, wait for the 5s for her and get that or the discounted 5 and use your upgrade next year. You'll likely be in a similar situation though because new devices will only be a couple months away and will likely be announced in March.
There are pros and cons to buying any phone; radios, features, updates, etc. That being said, I would wait it out a little bit. Keep in mind that the One has been out for 4 months already. So if you're on a 2 year upgrade plan like most people are, the One will be nearly 2 & 1/2 years old by the time you'll be eligible again.
The next generation of phones is so much better. Have you seen the G2? It's crazy! 3000 mAh battery!
The One totally pales in comparison.
Plus, the One is riddled with defects and there's a very very high chance that you will get a defective device. Most of the people here (including me) have defects and just live with it because chances are we'll get a worse device back. Hopefully for the next generation, HTC will tighten their QC.
I would wait for a really high end Moto to arrive.
I don't recommend either Sprint or HTC, because I've had horrible experiences with both. Did you know that the one has no thermal safety system? That's caused several bricks and as far as we know, is still causing them.
Also, ask around for how good sprint is in your area. Some people got nice data with Wi-max but terrible LTE. HSPA+ is actually way faster than Sprint's LTE, and it's more developed. Of course, you would have to switch carriers to get HSPA. Sprint's 3G is usually unusable.
I really appreciate the feedback, everyone -- it's been really helpful. I've pretty much decided to hold off and see what's available in Sept/Oct, which is around the time the new iPhone would come out anyway. I'm pretty intrigued by the G2, but I think I'll regret missing out on the One's front-facing speakers, 32gb storage, and high quality body design. I've also had Sense for many generations, so I think I'll miss that, but I've got other Android devices as well and won't have a problem adjusting.
Feel free to chime in if you have an opinion on this...like someone else said earlier in the thread, it's easy to get impatient when it comes to phone upgrades -- I need a lot of convincing to hold off, lol!
My wife became eligible and I upgraded her to the One for similar reasons. Thing is I got a great deal at Target, believe it or not. They had the One for 100 upgrade, a $25discount when giving in your old phone, plus what the phone was worth. She had a blackberry and after everything the new phone was about $40. She's happy makes me happy.
Point is keep your eyes open for deals cause even though new phones are coming, some deals are hard to pass up.
My wife did the same with her BB Curve. Even after 3 years it had a $100 trade-in value and in the end, we ended up getting a gift card back from Best Buy with $22 on it! She got used to the HTC EVO Design after a week or so and won't look back to BB
photos?
if you primarily use the camera for social network stuff i'd say upgrade. it is a pretty good phone!
