[Q] AT&T upgrade on Win 7 64bit... - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay,
I have been trying (in vein) for the past 4 days to upgrade my AT&T locked streak to 2.2 Froyo. I have tried everything I can think of between instructions from here, Streakdroid, Modaco.... nothing seems to work. Uggg.... Can anyone confirm that the upgrade can actually be done from a Windows & 64bit computer???
I have deleted and downloaded the QDL/drivers/etc probably a hundred times, followed the specific instructions for 64bit machines, and never have I been able to locate the Qualcomm Diagnostic stuff anywhere in my computer. I believe this to be the problem, but can't seem to find a solution to it. Have followed all the tutorials to the letter, umpteen times.
So either my reading comprehension SUCKS, or Windows 7 64bit is the problem. Unfortunately I have no access to any other Windows machine with a lower version...uggg
Please help.

I can CONFIRM this for this is the system I use to QDL, Fastboot and CWR..... There is a video tutoriol on excactly how to do this on Win 7 x64bit. Im not sure what forum it was on but I'll see if I can find it. Trust me on this QDL works perfect on x64 bit its just getting and signing the drivers thats tricky.
Sent from my Dell Streak
AT&T Froyo 2.2 ROM v.318 + Perf Mod
Win 7 x64 bit SUPERUSER Rooted

I have a hard time getting the QDL Tool to work for me. I finally met success when I used another machine running Win 7 32Bit. The drivers loaded and all was then right with the world.

Im curious, why would you suggest using the o2 ROM when the OP has a US Streak? This advice is misleading and will have the potential of creating more errors than he is currently having. Given the fact that there is a US version of the 2.2 ROM .
To the OP: I would suggest against using the o2 version. Just my two bits, rather you make an informed decision on how you move forward

Does the phone need to be unlocked before upgrading? AT&T gave me the code no problem, but haven't had a chance to get a Tmobile SIM card yet to unlock it

I used Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit to update my White 6601 ATT locked Streak to Pre-Release 2.2 Official and then flash StreakMod recovery via fastboot, flash AMS and DSP1 via fastboot, reboot to recovery, Full Wipe (Factory reset / Wipe Data, Wipe Cache, Advanced Wipe Dalvik), Install .ZIP from SD card, install 1.6.0. (well, I installed 1.4.6 first and then flashed 1.6 overtop because that was what was out at the time)
It can be done. No need to use unlock code from AT&T before hand. The Qualcom HS-USB Diagnostics 9002 is located within the ZIP archive you download with the repairtool.zip under \QDLTool3rd_20101022_GAUSB1A130500\Driver\Driver_2.067\Win64\WNET\AMD64
You want "qcser.inf"
Make sure you do all the "Test Mode" stuff for certificate installation FIRST.
Are you following the directions here:

Yes, followed those directions umpteen times...the driver never downloads as "Qualcomm..." I'm seriously beginning to think it has something to do with this Sony laptop...lol
So many people have done it, I know the directions are correct. There is something about the way this computer is seeing/recognizing/etc that is screwing this process up, has to be. Hopefully I'll get some time on another computer shortly..and try it again

I struggled over and over with using QDL on Windows 7 64 bit too. I'd pick the correct qualcomm driver but it kept coming up as comm14 or comm15. Up and up each time I tried it.
I'm a mac user by the way using bootcamp. So I jumped over to our imac running xp and was finally able to upgrade.
So I'd suggest finding someone with xp or windows 7 32 bit. Should be a breeze after that. Good luck!

Question on Rooting and Unlocked Phones

Hey guys, long time browser, first time poster. I just recently purchased a Telus Hero and I want to root it to be able to go to 2.1. The thing is, I don't know if I should update the radio or not. The phone is unlocked and I need the phone unlocked to be able to use it. If I update the radio, will my phone stay unlocked? Also, any guides for rooting a Telus Hero on Windows 7 x64?
Welcome to the forums pal.
OK,... 1st of all,... updating the radio will have NO effect on the network lock.
It is not always necessary to update the radio, but it is recommended to have the latest one. However, if it does cause adverse effects, you can always return back to a previous one.
Use BTDAGs guide linked in my signature, it is not Telus specific but you should be fine.
BTDAG has also done a guide on sorting drivers for 64bit systems so you may have to use both guides in conjunction with one another,...
Let me just say though,... I struggled with Win7 x64,... ended up using an old XP machine in the end.
Here you go,...

I know many people have said they've had problems with Win 7 x64. However, I just (finally) rooted my Hero (It's a Telus Hero, but I'm using it on AT&T, so it's unlocked) the other day and installed a 2.1 ROM with no issues on it, so sometimes you can get lucky.
PS - I have a quick question while we're on the topic of the radio. In going through the whole goldcard/downgrade process, I installed the IU version of the radio. So far, I haven't noticed any problems. Is there any noticeable change in the OU version of the radio for the North American Hero, specifically on AT&T (if anybody can answer that). Is it worth updating, or since I don't seem to be having any issues, should I stick with IU?
Oh great. While I do have access to a Windows XP machine, I prefer 64-bit. Oh well. What problems did you have anyway?
Thanks for that guide, though. You always hope for that nice first-time experience on a forum and when you get it, it feels great. I just got it.

As far as I know it is recomended to always have the latest radio,... But if you do think the change has decreased signal strengths then it is simple to roll back again.

I think it was the downgrade bit that kept freezing and it just didn't want to do anything,... But I'm not too sure to be honest, t'was a little while back now. ...I was later told that updating my drivers may have helped,... So you could have a bash to see if it works.
BTDAG has also done a guide on setting up drivers,... should be on pg1, 2 or 3 of the Development section.
Wouldn't you know it, the downgrade process won't go past the bootloader. Time to move onto XP. Thanks!
Whoo! Finally flashed it to a pre-rooted vanilla 2.1 ROM. Any suggestions on what I should flash to now? And what about Nandroid?
Iv just finished setting mine up again. Villain10.2. Working beautifully.
You could do a nandroid backup now but your on a clean slate, no need.
Thanks for the advice. One more thing, though. Does Nandroid run in the recovery menu, and is the backup stored in the phone's memory?

[Q] Telstra Atrix Mac OSX aRoot question Australia

I have been reading the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1006368&highlight=mac+osx thread (DesignGear's aRoot script, edited to run on Mac OS X)
My phone is connecting fine in USB debugging mode. The script runs but it doesn't seem to be working quite right. There are many files failing to copy.
Here is what I get when I run the script...
Getting temporary root access...

Then it reboots.
Superuser is installed, but I don't know if the process is successful or not. I'm also not sure what to do next.
This is my first post here and my first attempt at rooting, though its my third android device.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Nick
Depending on the software version of your Atrix.... aRoot doesn't work anymore.
(The part that is likely to be failing is psneuter, which was fixed by motorola a few software revisions ago)
You can check by opening SuperUser.apk and click on 'check su version' and if it fails, you don't really have root.
I too, am an OS X user.
As far as I know there is no way that actually works to flash your phone from OS X.
And I don't think there is any way to root anymore without flashing. (somebody can correct me if I am wrong)
I installed windows XP on a boot camp partition and installed RSDLite and moto-fastboot and unlocked/installed alternate ROMS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261 is probably where you should start.

Actually, for flashing this is not true. sbf_flash works fine.
OP, you should do a search for that. I'm on an MB Pro OS X 10.7.1. In fact, it worked where my Vista 64 bit machine + RSD lite wouldn't. I've used it several times to unlock the boot loader (IHOP_Bell.sbf). It worked flawlessly. After that, flash clockwork mod with moto-fastboot-osx64 or 32, and then you can just look for a ROM to install from cwm that is already rooted... which most of them are.
Based on the command line output, remounting the system partition for read/write failed, probably due to the "getting temporary root" step failing also. This means you don't have root because su wouldn't be copied over properly. aRoot is for 2.2.1... What version are you on?
Thank you both for you reply's.
I tried to check SU version and nothing happens, so I guess it's not rooted.
Also I checked my android version and I'm on 2.2.2 so I guess aroot's not for me.
I will try the RSD lite option next I guess..
Thanks again

Really, the RSD lite option? Why would you go to all the trouble of bootcamp and Windows when you could do it all on your current OS? Even some Windows users will tell you how frustrating it is to get RSD lite working on some machines. Works great on my netbook with Win7 Starter, but my main Win Vista 64 bit wouldn't do it no matter what.
For OS X, you just need:
sbf_flash
moto-fastboot-osx
Use the International Pudding thread as a guide to unlocking your bootloader. Once you've done that, the subject of root is almost moot because most ROMs are already rooted, you only need to install superuser.
Yeah I guess you're right I would prefer to do it on in OSX. I do already have a windows partition setup though, but I would rather not use windows if oI don't have too. It's just that in your earlier post the process sounded more complicated compared to the RSDLite option, which I have also already read a little bit about.
I have downloaded the files, but I'm not quite sure where to go from there. From what I can gather I need to unlock the bootloader first. But what do I do with the sbf_flash?
Thanks again

Okay, well first of all, you need to flash the unlockable bootloader:
1. Turn off your phone, then hold the down volume button and tap the power button. The phone will start up with a cycling menu that initially says, "fastboot".
2. Press volume down several times until it says, "rsd". This is the mode you want to be in.
3. Press volume up to select this mode.
4. Open up Terminal, cd to where your files are and type:
Code:
./sbf_flash IHOP_Bell.sbf
5. Reboot your phone and hold down the volume button again. This time you want to be in "fastboot", so when it comes up, press volume up.
6. From Terminal, type:
Code:
./moto-fastboot-osx64 oem unlock
Use the 64 bit or 32 bit version of the commands depending on your system. If you're on Lion or have a pretty new computer, it'll be the 64 bit one.
It will tell you to type in that command again, but this time along with the id they've provided. Take a look at the screenshots in the Pudding thread, they basically show this step, but in a Windows command prompt. It's the same thing.
7. Reboot your phone:
Code:
./moto-fastboot-osx64 reboot
Now you can flash clockwork mod onto the recovery partition with moto-fastboot-osx also. The ORFR 2.3.4 thread has some good examples and instructions on general flashing. The gobstopper threads also have some recovery files and instructions you could use to start off. Once you've got recovery installed, you're pretty much in the clear. You can softbrick your phone, but with recovery it's easy to get back to a working state.
Good luck!
Hey thanks Maledyris, this is great. I had some trouble finding the IHOP_Bell.sbf but I have it now.
I also found the ORFR 2.34 system and webtop images, what is the difference between these and the HKTW files, which should I use?
I'm hoping that putting Gingerbread on this phone will improve my signal strength (I read this somewhere online). If it doesn't I would like the option of returning it and getting a different phone with proper reception. How much of this can be undone? should I need to?
when I unrared IHOP_Bell.rar I got intl-fix-try1.sbf
Is that right?
Sorry this is my first time and I'm totally noob and a bit nervous.
Hey one more question, I saw another post of yours from march and it said you'd gone back to 2.2.2....what are you running now??
Cheers,
Nick

Ah, uhh... I'm not sure about the whole undoing part for you. I'm on Bell, and Bell has packages under the gobstopper threads to go between stock 2.2.2 and the alpha 2.3.4. I don't know if anyone has made the same type of thing for Telstra? Someone who's on Telstra could look at the images that were created for the Bell 2.2.2 stock cwm recovery and do the same for Telstra. I think it would depend on your carrier whether they care if you've unlocked your boot loader and changed the firmware? I've never tried to return my phone, but I bet they don't check. You never know though.
If reception and the radio is your main concern, I would probably see if I could just flash the radio instead of trying to flash full ROMs. It would be less of a noticeable change if you did decide to return it. I don't have suggestions on that though, you'd have to do a search. I don't quite remember anymore, but I think I flashed either the Orange or Telstra radio ages ago before we had an unlocked bootloader. It was fairly quick and painless. I had done it with RSD lite and win7 before I knew sbf_flash existed.

Awesome. I wasn't aware that there were OS X versions now. I flashed very early on though, and never checked again.
And if you are looking for newer ROMs, I highly recommend Ninja ROM, which is my favorite of the bunch that still retain all of the Blur applications.
... Or CM7 pre-beta 2, which breaks the camera in most apps that use it. Pre-beta 1 ruined my battery life, but beta 2 is just fine. If you go this route and still want to use the camera, Angel Camera on the market works.
Thanks again Maledyris,
I did get it from the international house of Pudding thread so it must be the right one.
I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16853634#post16853634
They are talking about the motorola defy.... do you think that 2.2.2 will work with the Atrix too?
Dragula, can you give me some links for those ROM's you're talking about? I would like to use the camera still I think!!
cheers!!
ok heres the latest, my Atrix has gone in for a repair. It had some serious reception issues and after a week of arguing with telstra they're going to have a go oat repairing. it. Basically it show lower signal strength than many other phone. If you're here Aus you'll know Atrix is supposed to be "blue tick" well this one certainly wasn't.
Anyway my rooting plans are on hold till I get the phone back...
any chance of those links dragula?
Are you still around Maledyris?
I got my phone back and it's no different, so I'm ready to get started. I've read through your instructions again, and tried to find an answer elsewhere in the forum, but I'm still confused about how to flash CWM recovery the bootloader is unlocked. There seems to be so many files and I'm not sure which are ok for my telstra atrix.
I saw I can download CWM from the market, is that what I need to do next? but you said flash CWM so I'm guessing not the market...
I've downloaded recovery-en-goapk-0630-1029.zip but I'm not sure exactly what to do with it??
Thanks again,
nick
Hi Nicholox;
I am in he same boat as you. I am about to get my first Android Phone (looking at the Atrix) and have been doing some serious reading about bootloaders/rooting and ROMS.
How did you unlock your bootloader?
Now to answer your question on CWM. From what I have read you can download and install ROM Manager from the App Market and then use the ROM Manager to install CWM.
I am pretty sure thats right. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Just check out these intructions from Maledyris... I'm not sure if my phone will boot up to access the market after flashing the sbf and unlocking it. anyone know the answer to this?

Hey!
Coming from an HD2, flashing ROMs shouldn´t be that difficult...but sadly it seems to be referring to the StreakDroid
I do know that flashing always comes with difficulties and has to be done with care...but I would be very thankful if anybody could help me out here and sum up the main steps, so I can get StreakDroid on my Streak too! I´ve read the whole thread (fards one), but I think it would be so much easier if anybody could take the time making a short tutorial how to flash the rom. It seems like the main bugs had overcomed...
Is there anybody out there who would do this for me and (I´m sure there are some/many) all the other guys who do not have the guts to start a try and error session? Would be soooo kind!!!!

Your gonna have to do some reading, it seems more complicated than it is.
I will give you hints, but no links.
Download and install Dell Streak drivers and PC Suite from Dell, look on the wiki here and find the fastboot drivers and exe and install those drivers.
Copy fastboot.exe to C:\ of your pc.
Next read about Streakmod and download the latest version, extract recovery.img and place it in c:\ on your pc.
Now flash recovery.img to the Streak using fastboot.
Now you can download StreakDroid 1.9.1, rename update.zip and place in the \ directory of your phones storage.
Now follow streakmod recovery procedure, turn on phone holding down volume up and down together, now you have a menu to do many things including update your phones firmware.

You should contact TheManii. He is collecting/archiving all of the Streak builds he can find and as you write - I do not see BB 357 in the wiki.
Where did you get your phone? Did you buy it new or used? Is it locked to a carrier?

I contacted him long ago but no reply. Maybe he is offline.
I bought my cell phone from India. we don't have carriers here.
it's a brand new phone and full unlocked with a price tag of 25k ( indian currency )
PM sent, keep in mind time zone differences. It was sent at 6am for me.
Bascially make a nandroid dump and send it to me
OP: Search for "MultiFlasher" thread, download files, read instructions and flash away. Even I got it done successfully. The fastboot driver is already included.
The main thing is you MUST have your phone's driver installed. This is the driver from Dell.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

[Q] TB ICS Rooting

Although new to 'Rooting' I have been reading extensively...I have been attempting to root my thunderbolt using the latest Thunderbolt-Tool-v1.1-BETA.zip...Each time I start the process, I completed the back up, but then I get an error message saying that the download was bad and it needs to re download the files...Here nothing happens...Can the upgraded thunderbolt be rooted? If so, where can I get help?..

First step would be to go here and register so that you can unlock your bootloader. (Quick easy step-by-step instructions)
Next step would be to install the necessary drivers for adb/fastboot. (to my knowledge this cannot be done on Win 8 64-bit possibly 32-bit either; specifically fastboot) For necessary items check the above mentioned site when looking at the instructions they are listed on the right. Or if running Ubuntu
Code:
sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
Now follow the step-by-step instructions to unlock the bootloader.
Then get this tool and follow the instructions (Windows only) to gain root. If running Ubuntu I'm not entirely sure how to get root as I'm lucky enough to have 2 laptops 1 running Ubuntu (easier bootloader unlocking) and 1 running Windows 8 64-bit and it took TONS of work to get it done considering Win 8 64 won't let me install fastboot drivers.
Hope that was helpful, and I hope even more that you're not running Win 8 64-bit lol
You'll also find instructions here as well as a crap ton more ROMs than available here on XDA
WARNING: THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA ON YOUR PHONE. BE SURE TO BACKUP ANYTHING YOU WANT TO KEEP.

Thanks for the response...Prior to submitting my post I signed up at HTC Dev and downloaded the Apps...When I attempted to install 'Eclipse' I received an error message: JRE must be available to run Eclipse. I have JRE installed already. I actually downloaded it again just to be sure...
Getting Closer
I am making progress. I have gained SuperUser status but am now stuck. I cannot seem to locate the file 'Set Main Version Low'...This file needs to be flashed but it does not appear although I can find it in my downloads and in the Android folder I created...

Thanks
I never got around to thanking you guys for the help you sent my way...I am still learning but I believe my 'grey matter' between the ears might need an update...LOL: :highfive:

Severely confused, help?

Okay so I bought this HTC Amaze the other day and needless to say, I love it.
The only bad thing about it is that it's on 2.3.4 cause it's the unbranded, Asian version. (My english is even set to bloody Malaysian)
Anywho, I read that there's actually an OTA for it that gives 4.0
YAY But that's for tmobile.
Coming from a Motorola Defy+ to HTC isn't exactly a smooth transition, cause in Motorola they couldn't unlock the bootloader and the original stock files were SBF's which were flashed by RSD lite. Also rooting is much easier, in my opinion.
So, I want to boot ICS on this, but not the original tmobile OTA, more like CM9, if possible? I saw there's a few roms I could use.
I tried doing some work on this phone but got confused.
I unlocked the bootloader, and I'm honestly not sure what to do next. Do I need to do S-OFF? I don't even know what that is, let alone how to do it.
Plus I read that it's only available for Ubuntu users?
.............................
Can someone please guide me in the right direction?
If your bootloader is unlocked and you have a custom recovery you should be able to flash a custom ROM like CM. In order to flash a ROM that is specific to another carrier I believe you have to be s-off and super cid
Okay so I installed 4EXT and rooted the device permanently. I tried doing a CM10.1 rom and gapps...... It loaded, but it wont go past the welcome screen where you select the language.
Gonna try to re-wipe and flash again. If not, I made a backup of 2.3.4.
Make sure you check the md5 sums before installation
Okay this is bad, the md5sums don't match and now I'm stuck at white background with htc logo on it all the time.
I can boot into bootloader then recovery. I can also flash roms but they don't work. I tried multiple, always doing a full format except sd card.
I tried flashing stock kernel, not working.
I tried using hasoon's aio to flash original RUU but device undetected.
IDK What to do
Redownload a ROM and make sure the md5 sums match then flash the ROM it you can restore a nandroid if you made one. If the md5 sums don't match that is why you are having issues. It's good you can boot into recovery.
I managed to get it to work on stock rom again, thanks to another forum thread.
I'm a bit scared to try doing it again, seeing that I have windows 8 and the programs don't work on it.
Maybe when I dual boot either ubuntu or windows7 I'll try it again.
Having a nandroid backup and checking the md5 sums before flashing should prevent most issues from happening. I'm running a dual boot windows 8/Ubuntu PC if that means anything to you
It means everything to me!!!!
Can you explain to me how you did it?
I have to burn the image on a cd still, but I tried to dual boot windows 7 and 8 but 7 couldn't be installed on a gpt partition.
I do have an external hard drive, but that's mainly for backing up my data, so I don't want to use that.
Here's what I was doing, I created a partition of 100gbs using the preloaded software on windows, formatted and put it as a letter and it worked well as a partition on windows 8 itself. But when I booted the windows 7 cd, it wouldn't install on it.

I installed Ubuntu with the windows installer if I remember correctly. It's been awhile since I did it so I don't remember exactly how I did it and I don't remember having any issues doing it. My laptop originally came with Windows 7 and I upgraded it to Windows 8 and installed Ubuntu sometime after upgrading to Windows 8. My older hardware may be the reason why it worked now that I'm looking over this stuff again. I'm pretty sure I downloaded the "Install Ubuntu with the Windows installer" to install it. Hopefully that helps.

Yeah, having the hardware from win7 would have definitely had something to do with the compatibility of Ubuntu on the laptop.
:/ I'll google the windows installer, if it helps I'll let you know.

What exactly are you trying to do? Make your phone s-off? All you need is to boot ubuntu 32bit from a cd to make your phone s-off. Everything else is pretty much done through windows or custom recovery. All of t-mobiles RUUs are .zip files and are flashed through the bootloader and the windows toolkits should be able to flash them otherwise some of the other carrier RUUs are .exe files.
No, Hasoon's aio doesn't work on my operating system, I do not know why.
It works fine on windows 7, but I do not always have access to it.
That's why I wanted to dual boot with Ubuntu. If I could get the drivers and programs to work, I can try booting into Cyanogenmod knowing that if anything happens, I can reboot my phone the way I did last time.
I would try WindyCityRockr's WinDroid program. Hasoon's program wasn't Woking for me either but WinDroid worked for me on Windows 8. If that works you may not need to have Ubuntu installed. Booting Ubuntu from a CD is probably your best option
