[Q] Cannot get Streak to connect to internet via 3G - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running DJ Steves 1.5.3 and for some reason I can only get onto the internet via wifi.
I have checked the APN settings and they are correct (which for my carrier, is there should be no settings or proxies), and have turned on all of the boxes re enabling data etc.
With the wifi turned off, and the toggle switch for data turned on, when I go into a browser it doesn't connect.
Is there another setting somewhere restricting the mobile data connection.
I must admit that as far as the icons in the status bar, I have never seen either G, 3G or H on it since moving over to DJ Steves ROMs. Is there something there disabled?
I am using the Miren browser if it makes any difference.

For starters. If your not seeing any of the mobile connectivity signals then you have no mobile network. This just started happening all of a sudden or after you flashed dj steves rom?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

I never used the Streak with original Froyo as I flashed it as soon as I got it, so I dont know.
It has configured itself from my network provider, and looking at their settings it seems that it has downloaded them correctly.
On my HTC Desire running 2.2 I didnt have an issue at all. I am now wondering if it is something related to the ROM as you read on here about all sort of features that work for some and not for others.

dont believe it, APN setting wrong, a dot was missing in IP address
sorted.

Do a simple device reset, another user had the same issue and it was fixed after preforming the reset. Good Luck.

[ISSUE] How to prefer Wi-Fi to 3G

I have a HTC Fuze. The last few ROMS that i have been using (Energy, RRE, Tael), all the Apps always use the 3G internet to do their work even if a much faster Wifi is connected. Is there any way to make all apps(including things like email) globally prefer the Wifi when available? Also I dont want to have to keep changing settings to do this, It simply needs to be "If Wifi available use it, else use 3G"
Thanks in advance.
What i did was to go to start>settings>connections>advanced>select networks and change the default connection to the internet to "My work network", rather than my 3G network. This way, if theres any connection to the internet needed, my phone will use my wifi connection. The problem with this, however, is that when you dont have a wifi connection available, the phone will not connect to the internet unless you change the above setting back to your 3G network. If anyone knows a better way, please let us know
no i cant keep switching. thats too much trouble. there must be a better way.

Does it automatically connect to WiFi when a known network is within range even when the phone is in sleep? If yes, does it disconnect once not in use for a while?

As far as I know there is no way to do it automatically. You can use one or the other but they must be switched manually. All HTC phones have always worked this way. Maybe if the demand was high enough which apparently it is not a Chef could come up with an app that would do it. But for now you must do it manually.

that is extremely failurous. not preferring the fastest internet connection is major fail. did not know that.
My phone does this automatically. It uses the WiFi whenever it's on. If the WiFi is off, it uses the data connection.
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong?

what the heck? how? u must help me find out..
i think it does prefer wifi over 3g in WM 6.5...!!
to check it out here is wt i've done....turn data connection off...check that its on in the notification manager "when u click on the task bar"..then run any app that needs internet " opera, msn messenger, email...etc" while this app is online..
now there r two ways to check it
1-the notification manager & see if it turned to 3g data connection...if so u should find a timer running in ur service provider section, if not then its only using wifi
2-check the communication manager & see if it turned the data connection on, if its off then its using wifi...
thats how it is with my touch pro...i'm using energy rom nov. 08 build
Indeed it prefers wifi connections 2 data, but You have to :
1. Have Known wifi spots in range
2. Keep wifi connection on, while in stand by
Keep in mind that if a program starts to use the data connection it wont change to use the wifi one. So firstly connect and then open programs.

apparently its some sort of combo of this. i am using 6.5. any apps that have been using 3g continue with it. and i have to go to the comm screen and turn off data to force new apps to consume wifi. which isnt too bad, certainly not as bad as going to the network options. i would wish they made this a bit more seamless like with the desktop technology, i can switch from wired to wireless lan without even dropping a skype call.

now i have discovered a new problem. even if i open the app after i have wifi turned on and data turned off, some apps just dont want to use the wifii.
Bing maps and google maps for example just tell me there is no internet.
this is really pissing me off, whats the point of having wifi on a phone if the apps wont use it. i dont really care about the google location service if the data is through the internet, but atleast turn on.
lame.

[Q] No Data Connection in 2.1

Yesterday, I successfully updated to android 2.1. I have confirmed that the APN information is correct and that there is sufficient network coverage. I have activated data in the settings - yet I cannot seem to get a data connection. Unless I activate WIFI, neither facebook nor mail will update, and I also cannot open websites in several browsers (opera, fennec, standard browser, dolphin).
I also don't get an icon for 3g or hsdpa connection.
Anyone having the same problem? Or even better... a solution?
Best,
-Mike

I would say it's your carriers networks are down. I had a similar problem but the 3G symbol was there and it just would download anything. I then disabled juice defender and it works perfectly.
If you are running the nordic kit this seems to be a fairly common problem. One of the guys over at phandroid fixed this by going to the SIM Toolkit and downloading settings, but I did not have this option. I was able to get it working temporarily by fiddling with the APN settings, but then like you it just failed to work any more.
I have flashed back to 1.6 and am now going to update with generic uk firmware.
So - I tried the Sony Ericsson option in the settings (topmost menu entry) to automatically download settings, I tried setting them manually, I tried auto-configuring via the apn-options... nothing worked...
then, suddenly, without having changed anything - I get a 3G signal. Seems to have sorted itself out for whatever reason. Will update in case anything changes.

[Q] No Data Connection After Flashing to Stock Via Odin

Hey, I got a softbrick on my vibrant, reflashed back to stock and everything is working except I get no data connection. No 2g/no 3g, no Data icon at all. Even if I am on wifi I am also unable to download anything from the market place however my datasync / push with e-mail also works.
Any ideas?
Thanks
figured out my APN was empty... all good.
same issue, i don't know how to fix it. Mobile Network state says disconnected and connecting but never connects...
Might help to say I'm using a Galaxy S Continuum
and the only reason I'm posting here is because this is the only topic similar to my issues.

I have configured the APN manually but it's just doesnt effect anything.
any sugestion?
Had the same problem but my mobile operator gave me the APN settings manually and bingo

I couldnt figure it out either, so just used Wifi to get myself going...
Turns out 2.1 doesn't support two factor authentication with Google accounts, (at least I couldnt get it to work) so you may need to turn that off too to get going.

Problem with WiFi on eris

I'm having a very interesting problem with the WiFi on my Eris. Basically what happens is that I can connect to a wireless network and use it for about 3 min, after that it still shows that it is still connected, but nothing will load in the browser, Facebook, etc. Is there a way to fix this or is it an internal problem with the phone?

It's more likely something that you can fix on the router. What router is it? Is the firmware up to date? Are you using any security (WEP, WPA or WPA2)? Which channel are you broadcasting on? Is it set to bgn, bg, or g only?
Also, are you rooted and, if so, which ROM are you running?
Just a few quick things I have noticed about the Eris and WiFi:
- the Eris tends to have issues with routers set to WPA security and TKIP encryption. If you can, it's better to use WPA2 (which uses AES), but if WPA2 is not available, see if you can set WPA to AES only, and not TKIP or TKIP/AES.
- if you are not broadcasting the SSID, try setting it to broadcast and leave it there. Hiding the SSID does not make your router any more secure than a router where the SSID is broadcast
I routinely access both a G mode (by SMC as provided by cable provider) and N mode routers - using both WEP (yup ....) and WPA2-TKIP with SSID broadcast on, and the Eris locked on easily & stay connected with no problems whatsoever - true of some of the newest Froyo and GB Roms released lately.
If SSID is turned off, then it's a NO go as it won't even connect.
Do you have any firewall and/or security suite apps running alongside the router that might be blocking the connection? Check the logs - also verify DHCP and ipconfig settings on your pc ?
It appeared possible that some sort of energy star/saver settings being flipped on after a set period of being in-active? (It's been mentioned elsewhere, check your wi-fi sleep policy on whether it's enabled "When screen turns off"? under Advanced / Menu on the phone (wireless & networks > wif-fi setttings)
Try changing it, disabled & re-enabled it to see if the changes help - is this on a particular ROM release or across several Roms? I'm running GSB v3.5 and it's flawless.
I use wep at home, but the network is open at my work and I have the problem there as well. The Rom I use is tenzo xtr, but I've had this problem on other roms as well. The sleep policy is set to never sleep

I have the same problem. Been that way for the last few builds of any gingerbread rom. The one I am using know MacRom was the only one I never had problems with but this new release I know have drop off problems again

My Eris' radio receiver (Baseband version) is 2.42.01.04.27 - which is supposed to be the latest release from VZW.
I'm currently on CS's latest CM7-V9 GB ROM and I haven't experience any wifi or signal dropoff/reception issues - and I barely get a working 3G signal (bouncing back-n-forth to 1X on the status bar) otherwise when I'm home (switched to CM7 from GSB b/c I had minor issues w. foreign/Asian characters not displaying properly when I used Google Translate.)
Might be worth a try - I did a full system data/cache/dalvik wipe and also SD card reformat - after moving/backing up NAND & Titanium folders, etc. to a backup HDD first - basically starting clear & clean before setting up the ROM to flash to avoid any issues with market/apps or traces of old data on the SD card.
And, yes - I did noticed wifi connectivity with at least one of the "other" GB roms for the Eris - apparently tied to CM7 itself and not necessary unique (like those SMS/MMS, Exchange server & even GPS issues. What's consistent is that it is not uniform or across the board, some users finding issues & bugs while others are reporting little or no problems at all. Just wondering if it's b/c we are pushing the edge of "envelope" too far & beyond its original designed limitations (Android 1.5 to 1.6) now to 2.3.4. Overall speaking, when I eased back the overclocking speed to very moderate level above 528 Mhz & use conservative tweaks, I tend to run into fewer problems if any - just my extra 2 cents worth.
Yup done everything you just mentioned to no success. I guess I will live with it or go to a froyo rom. Either way hoping to believing the world of Eris soon.

Hello Zx2ner88,
If you have tested your device with multiple wifi connections to rule out the actual wifi disconnecting then the next step would be to address the device. If you have the most recent software (Settings>About Phone>System Updates) and a simply battery pull does not assist the next thing to do would be a factory reset. Please keep in mind this will erase everything from the device so if desired please backup. You can do this reset by navigating to Settings>Privacy>Factory Reset>Reset Phone> and Erase Everything. After the reset you will have to reprogram by following the prompts and choosing option 1. Please retest wifi after reset. Thank you.

[Q] Hotspot doesn't work

ROM : VillainROM 3.0.0
Kernel : Ninphetamine 2.0.5
-----
After applying the fix for Hotspot settings to save in another thread (chown and chmod the /data/misc/wifi) I tried to turn on the hotspot, after all, this was inevitably what I got the phone for, H+ Hotspot.
Now I turn it on and the network appears in my computer, but if I try and connect to it, after I type in the security key, it comes up with "Connecting" and just stays like that permanently...
Eventually it sometimes says "Limited Access".
My phone does have internet connection, but why does it not work.
Does your network allow tethering?
Did it work on another rom?
Have you tried a hard reset?
I'm using tethering on VR but with speedmod kernel with no issues.

Orange in the UK for example use and APN on their SGS2 roms that doesn't allow tethering (you can set up a tethering connection no problem, but the network won't let you have any data).
They also lock the APN down so it isn't editable (insert rude word about Orange)!
You can get round the problem by adding another generic APN for all connections and using that.
i was having the same problem and struggled alll these days for solution. I used to get limited acesses and hence checked the ip4 & ip6 drivers connectivity for solution with no luck.
Then clicked on windows update, after update everything started working. So try to update your windows.
presently i am on turkbey ROM and it is working and also checked with sensation 1.9 and here tooo works!!!!!
Hey all, thanks for all your replies.
Network: 3
Plan: The One Plan +Tethering
Resolved: Yes.
For anyone else wondering how I fixed my problem:
1) Rebooted the phone
2) Rebooted my PC
3) Turned off the WiFi Adapter in my PC
4) Turned it Back On
5) Turned off WiFi on phone
6) Turned Hotspot on without any authentication
7) Worked on PC
8) Changed back to WPA2 PSK
9) Worked with Key.

I had wifi tethering working fine on Orange with SGS running Froyo 2.2.1, but have just upgraded my handset to SGS2 running Gingerbread 2.3.5 (stock XWKI8 firmware), and wifi tethering isn't working now.
As far as I can see I have exactly the same APN settings in my new SGS2 as in the old SGS, but maybe I need to use this new trick.
What do you mean by "adding another generic APN for all connections and using that"? If I add a new APN, what settings do I put in?
Thanks.
