[Q] BLUR stuff for XT720 - Milestone XT720 Themes and Apps

Hello,
I have a few questions and I really need your help
I am in love with all Motorola phones with BLUR, like the DEFY, Milestone 2, Droid X...
And I searched like crazy for a Blur-like launcher. I found HElauncher which is a new launcher in the market and it is amazing (you can select the dock style you want)...
But it doen't feel the same and landscape mode doesn't work
But what I really like of BLUR is the widgets and toggle widgets from it. My question is...
Is there any way to port the BLUR launcher and widgets? Is there any launcher or widgets that look like Blur?
That's the only thing I don't like of this phone. Its launcher is not good at all and there are no cool widgets like in Blur. The korean froyo has some pretty calendar and contact widgets which are scrollable, but I would really love blur.
Please help me
Thanks in advance...

I NEED blur, please

that's probably because people might have no access to it yet, or according to people that have moto phones with build in Blur it runs really really slow, and they want to get rid of it to use stock Android

Dexter told me he could do it when he gets the phone
He has done an AMAZING Blur rom for the Milestone, which works almost 100% good.

Indeed. Well actually, Blur runs great on phone with good memory, but with approx 80 MB RAM on the XT720, it would be really slow. Unless the rom would be downsized like for example Cynanogen or Oxygen, but that would require a custom kernel and that is not possible atm.

blur for the xt720
I am 99% sure if you go to the developement section there is a patch to install blur on the xt720, developed by dexter.
I havent tried it but I have heard that it makes the phone slow and kills the battery

That's not true. The phone isn't slow and battery life isn't worse then on normal 2.2.1 and 2.1 on the XT720

In fact, it makes some things faster... 2.2.1 gives you JIT = massive speedup on stuff. Just look at quadrant 2.1 versus 2.2.1 XT720.
You idle at higher RAM usage with 2.2.1 though.

this question is useless now that we got a blur rom, lol.
But sadly I may be selling the phone to buy a DEFY :/

[Q] why are there soo many themes for all the roms besides squidlymandigo rom?

I've been a Droid 2 owner for over a month and I love the squidlymandingo rom but I find it really hard to locate any compatible themes for it. I know there are more people like myself who would like to see more themes for this rom or atleast some links to some working themes. I hope some talented d2 themers see this thread and help contribute some themes to a perfect rom.
I know its a very popular rom that is very smooth and there are options for blurry or blurless rom and its got the best quadrant score (2500 was my lowest running stock Squidly 2.3.20.2 with oc at 1.2) out of all the roms i've tried for the d2.
Just need some themes for it so can anyone please help us Squidly users out on the theme tip?
I just posted a poll on some themes we would like to see ported for it here
suggestion: since you have noticed the need/want for themes for the rom and an apparent lack of a supply, why wouldn't you jump on it and become somewhat of a hero amongst the squidly community? trust me, theming isnt hard (even i figured it out lol)

i've been trying to follow the instructions for porting over themes to this very beastly squidly rom but haven't any luck minus a port of a old revolution remix but didn't like how some of the stuff didn't theme over correctly and i lost the verizon wireless indication in the drop down and when i tried to port the WatermarkD it completely jacked my phone so i'm going to leave this to the pros i just hope someone shows us some theme love cause i'm not going anywhere romwise and i am sure most of the users feel this way but we just need some theme options that are designed for the rom.
The quadrant score didn't mean crap all squidly did was run openfront or opensource or whatever that improves AAC encoding which is one aspect of quadrant, but it messes around with audio streaming. This "massive" quadrant score doesn't really mean any better day to day performance.
regardless of the quadrant score its still a very popular rom and there are many that would love some themes for the rom. i like the rom cause its smooth and i can choose to keep some aspects if motoblur or remove it completely but honestly like a few of them so its a good rom for me just lacks themes.
Squidly enabled stagefright in the build.prop which is why it gets high quadrant scores. Squidly is awesome and I would love to see some themes for it.

I recently began working on theming. I will make this my first project. Gimme a few days to get everything out.
Well... a lot of AOSP themes will work for other AOSP roms, like a bunch of fission themes work fine on gummyjar or liberty.
Sometimes they screw up a few features but since they don't do any huge modifications themes often will work for similar roms.

[Q] Gingerbread Benefits?

So now that the GB ROMs seem to be in full swing.....
What are the pros and cons vs Froyo?
Well, I went from Froyo to GB and for me:
Much faster and smoother
Almost no lag, you would think it was a 1Ghz phone
WIFI and GPS locks on almost instantly and does not drop out.
3G data rate is mouch more consistent
I have been waiting patiently for the Thunderbolt, and this rom will make the wait much easier
Thanks to Workshed for an amazing rom.
There is really not a whole lot different, besides looks. The GB keyboard is better. I could really use either one in a pinch, though right now I am using GSB myself.

That's actually not true at all, there are quite a few differences. Workshed's rom uses the latest CM7 nightly (RC1). Tazz's rom uses ADW as the default home launcher, Workshed's uses LauncherPro. Not sure of the numbers but both roms come overclocked at different numbers. Workshed's rom comes with an extra theme (Mau5KANG). There are quite a few differences but my suggestion honestly is to try them both for about 5 days each and see which one you like best ! Hope all this helps.
Its the little things;
Theme Manager has great potential, change themes on the fly
Better memory management. I no longer use autokiller.
App Management in settings, populates fast and is more user friendly. Great for killing stubborn or hung apps without the need for 3rd party app. (Older versions were slow and clunky).
Built in CPU manager clock speed and governor.
Auto bright setting controls seem much improved IMO.
More lockscreen options.
Overall responsiveness improved, providing better user experience.
Active development. More options and improvements still to come.

He asked the pros and cons between Gingerbread and Froyo, not between the two GB ROMs - and that's what my post was answering.
Thanks for the info, any input is appreciated.
My biggest concern is speed.
I have flashed a lot of ROMs over the past year or so. I have found regardless of the ROM when my available memory drops below 50M my phone gets laggy. I started using Go Launcher about a month ago and really like it (running app tab is great). I see apps running in the background that I know I haven't used like facebook, youtube and Pandora. Autokiller does not seem to be doing a good job squashing them. I want Pandora on my phone I just only want it running when I am using it.
Conapp, Tazz, Kaos and Shed have all been great and very responsive to questions or issues with their ROMs
I think it is time to give GB a run.
GB does a great job managing memory and terminating background apps. Never get the slow Downs like I did on 2.1 or 2.2

As part of the upgrade, look into flashing xtrcache2cache, which will free up a lot of memory for data and apps - probably about 30 MB or so. If you do use it, you just have to remember to re-flash it after updating the ROM. So,
- flash GSB
- flash gapps (mandatory, even for no wipe updates)
- flash cache2cache
It's here, and works just fine with GSB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924562
Ok, one more advantage to GB, and this, to me, is a big one, is cursor placement/text selection. It's much better - I actually like it more than iOS's tap/hold/magnifying glass.

Ah! That helps answer a concern of mine wondering how easy it will be to get used to not having a trackball when I do eventually (probably not for a year) upgrade from the Eris. I don't use the trackball a lot, but for fine adjustments to text selections, it certainly has helped.
i am finding GB to be much faster and my battery life seems to be better.

[Q] Problem with Low Framerate on Homescreens

I've had a problem since getting my Atrix (unlocked on TMO). I'm coming from a Vibrant, which I dearly loved. I just loaded it up with too many widgets and started using SPB Shell which greatly slowed down its performance. Its one of the reasons why I got an Atrix to begin with, to have extra power to overcome all the little things I load my phone up with. It performs fine for this, the problem I have is a fairly low framerate on the homescreens, not enough to be non functional but just enough to be a little annoying.
For instance, I can flick the app drawer with my vibrant and it quickly flys up but you can distinguish different icons flying up, this is not possible with my atrix. It creates an indistinguishable blur. While switching between homescreens it comes off as stuttery instead of the smooth transitions I'm used to with my vibrant. I don't notice any of this while running apps on the atrix.
I'm rooted and running stock 2.3.4. I don't know if a custom rom would fix this but I'm tempted to just sell it and wait a while if this what to expect.
Any help regarding this matter would greatly be appreciated.

I have this same problem. On my old Inspire 4G transitions between multiple widget heavy homescreens was silky smooth on the stock sense launcher, or launcher pro, go launcher ex, and finally adw launcher ex.
On the Atrix the stock blur launcher is horrendously slow, go launcher ex isn't much better (and performance drops if you enable high quality drawing), launcher pro is nearly bad. The only launcher that comes close to the smoothness of my old inspire is adw launcher ex, which coincidentally was the slowest launcher on my inspire!
I've tried nearly every launcher (Blur, ADW, LauncherPro, Go, Zeam) but they all exhibit the same issue. There seems to be no way around it.
But at least it's fully responsive (on Gingerbread). No delays when swiping between screens. At this point I've stopped caring about framerate.
Launcher pro and adw launcher are very smooth with cm7

Honestly, launchepro was the only launcher on Atrix that I tried that works absolutely flawlessly and with no lag.

Launcherpro is better than stock but it still suffers the same issue for me.

Which Rom gives more performance boost?

Which Rom for atrix gives more performance boost? (ive been lookingin aria, alien or CM) can suggest one of yours too. Im looking it for games..
Just from my own readings I believe that the CM7 pre-beta guys have gotten the highest quadrant scores. there is the slight thing with the camera though. I use alien myself and haven't had any problems but i'm mostly doing gensoid gaming. I haven't tried aura yet but it does look good. not sure if this helps you
Thanks it does help, i seen the screenshot it got 4000 on quadrant i run quadrant on my overweighted atrix (lots and lots of apps) i got around 1500, so i think it will give a boost =) maybe ill stick with the stock rom till CM comes stable.
Do your alien run better than stock? how much better?

using CM7, the stock camera doesn't work too well, but you can get around that by using a few third party apps from the market.
the fingerprint sensor doesn't work (which really sucks, because that was a major selling point of the phone for me) but i'm just dealing with that.
i've been averaging between 3700-4000 quadrant scores, and pretty much loving everything about CM7. i wasn't too big of a fan of all that motoblur stuff, so it's pretty awesome to get rid of it all.
it's definitely ready for a daily driver, for me at least, as long as you're willing to sacrifice the fingerprint scanner, and use crappy workarounds for the camera.
But fixes are on the way right? to get around those issues? i just want to have a smooth browser scrolling =( hope CM gives that.

I like it a lot more than stock. It's fully deodexed so all of the themes that people put together can be flashed over that rom. I'm a huge fan of CM7 on my nook color but I am waiting patiently for the camera and fingerprint scanner to be fixed when they can get to it. I have a company policy for exchange mail that requires a password and it's way easier to swipe and be in than to enter a password everytime.
yeah, but im seeying all this on the perfomance side cyanogen looks awesome so ill keep the stock then jump to cyanogen when its fully compatible, and then the ultimate android Ice cream sandwich come, hopefully with hardware acceleration then it will crush all iphones Muhahaha
I'm using Aura 1.1.3 Debloat #7 and it seems to be very fast. I use SetCPU and have it underclock the processor to 216 MHz when the screen is off. On the other roms, the phone would hiccup for a while before coming to full speed when I turned the screen on. On this Aura rom, I can barely notice a slowdown in the first half second and it goes straight to full power then. I believe it's because this rom is only 150 MB, as opposed to others like CherryBlur, which is 560 MB.
Every ROM has it's points.... I look at the list of whats included: My biggest thing is tethering but I was able to do it on every ROM so it really depends on what you're going to add to it. If you have a ton of apps, something that is debloated/deblurred is probably best but not important. Quadrant scores don't seem like they are entirely trustworthy enough to make one a winner over the other. CM7 isn't gingerbread so I wouldn't include that one right now in the mix. They all are stable though. I like Aura/Darkside and Alien. Ninja is still a favorite of mine as well. I don't use the camera much so D3 or stoc doesn't make a difference to me but you might have a preference. I'm not a Star Wars fan but I tride that one and it was smooth....I liked the Darth Vader breathing when the SD cards mounted LOL. I use ADW for a launcher beause it gives me the choice of several themes and 5 icons on the dock.

[Q] how does atrix port compare to eclipse?

I've been an eclipse fanboy since the first roms were posted. I'm thinking of trying the atrix port.
Has anyone tried both nitro's eclipse and navenedrob's atrix port? How do they compare in speed/battery life/etc..?

2.3.4 is neat because we don't have it on our phones yet, but its just 2.3.3 with some slight improvements. I flashed it for like 5 minutes and went back to eclipse. I mean this in the most respectful way to naven, I am glad he is doing the ports. I just really like eclipse
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
I've used ecplipse from the beginning but i recently went over to the atrix port just because its the latest version of android. I really liked eclipse because a lot of the blur elements from motorola are removed. but i also like the atrix version just because, like i said, its the latest version from google.
I'd say give both a try. just make 2 separate nandroid backups so u can swap between the 2 if u dont like one or the other.
Both have flaws
This is just my opinion but eclipse has issues with media playback, especially music. I had run the stock rooted gb from p3 and the music played fine if u played it from internal storage, and then fine from the sd card after I baught a class 10 adata card online. With eclipse though it didn't matter, the music skipped and popped like crazy no matter what I did, and I ALWAYS do clean installs with wipes of the big 3. The atrix port of stock 2.3.4 plays music perfectly, but the camera has issues with video mode and the system is laggy compared to eclipse all over. I even debloated it with tibu but it was still slower. That being said, there are some cool animation effects on the atrix port and it had the drop down toggle widgets, but the lag is killing it when u use certain apps that require performance. The bistro capture on both is horrible for some reason. Stock rooted gb from p3 had a great working video capture in 720p hd, but these two roms break it somehow. I know there were problems with navan's scripts affecting media playback so they might affect video capture too. And I'm not dissing him at all, he has done great work.... Again these are my opinions based on my experience with each rom.
I wasn't sure I wanted to leave eclipse rom to go to this ATRIX port but im not regretting it this port is nuts im having way better battery on the ATRIX rom then eclipse rom
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
I am having better battery life with Atrix as well. Also my 3g speeds are faster but the signal is not as strong in every area as it was on Eclipse. Music is not skipping with Atrix but the voice commands do not work. I am running ADW on both so operating speed is the same.
I have used every version of eclipse and I've tried to switch to Atrix 3 different times but nothing beats Nitro's blurless ROM for me. It's fast and makes you realize how much blur sucks in every form.
The Atrix ROM is very good and if it weren't for blurless, I'd use it for sure.

See i like blur its not bad but the Atirx rom is a really bugged down blur it doesn't have everything like the stock 2.3.3 has which is nice
Never tried an Atrix port and never will. Obviously im not answering your question but I AM throwing my 2 cents in.
Nitro has been banging it out since the beginning. Working his ass off withing the limitations he is provided and he is giving us X2 users the best experience possible that google allows him for X2 software. Im willing to bet that if they give us 2.3.4 then Nitro will be all over it.
I also happen to like Eclipse.
But, for the above mentioned reasons.. I will use Eclipse until this phone dies of old age or meets its unexpected doom.
For me there was things I liked and things I didn't about the ATRIX rom...
Eclipse definitely runs faster and I like the blur-less-ness of it but the ATRIX rom has better battery life and allows 4 touch events at once... so far I haven't decided which one I like better but they are both really good!

I like eclipse, I do not like the new atrix one, plus it does not have hdmi mirroring.
I found that the atrix one slows my phone a bit, and Eclipse rom is very fast.
I didn't like it. Too much of AT&T is implemented into the ROM. Some essential Android apps.aren't automatically put in.

Better than all the bloat we end up with by default. The first thing I noticed was that there was virtually no bloat. I'm really digging this atrix port with red ice cream theme. It's got great batt life and stability, and is totally blazing.

The reason eclipse drains the battery faster is the second core never turning off it constantly runs and the cpu tweaks that are included by default.

I was running on P3s stock rooted Gingerbread until 4 days ago. Honestly, I think my favorite was the stock GB debloated. I am on Eclipse now, and don't get me wrong it is awesome. It is the fastest I have tried so far, and I love the "pure" android feel to it. I also do not get music pops/skips, and I did not on the rooted GB either, must be one of the lucky ones. Now I can say this as well, my battery life has been the best on Eclipse v.05. I am on 1 day and 10 hours on a single charge. I charged my battery to full, then wiped the phone and battery stats then flashed Eclipse and am getting great results. So far, my only complaint is I cannot get the music player to show up on the lockscreen as it did with stock GB rooted and Atrix port. Not a huge deal at all, just something I noticed.

not true last night i was messing around with the scripts and found out a few things.
1) the kernel doesnt care what speed you tell it to run at. it just ignores and runs between 1ghz and 216mhz
2) with out the scripts it still disables the 2nd core when it isnt used
theres a 3rd but i forget it
