keyboard apps - Vega Themes and Apps

Helloall
Theres a bunch o keyboards apps ou there,, but which ones suit the vega?
Most of my posts here are written on my advent and there full of errors due to the stock keyboard being inherenltly evil.
On my desire im running the ginger bread keyboard,,, but on the vega, its not great in landscape.
Any suggestions free or otherwise just on the vega?
Or is it down to the ultra/ lack of sensitivity with the vega screen?
My desire has a screen cover, whereas my vega doesnt. Does it make a difference?

Im using thumb keyboard. It's alot better than the stock but not the finished solution. I think I paid €1for it. You use your thumbs so you get less double press registering and it does have cursor arrow keys so makes it easier to navigate. When the Vega is plugged in tho using the keyboard is crazy for multiple key presses. From what I can understand it is a power regulation issue

Heard good things about thumb keyboard. I use Smart Keyboard Pro, paid apparently but fully customizable. I use the iPhone skin and have adjusted the height of the keys to much higher. Very nice to type on.
*edit* if you do try smart keyboard pro don't forget to get the free language addon pack to go with it from the market..

I've found Smart Keyboard Pro to be the best so far, less mistakes than on stock and a whole bunch of settings to tweak to your liking

I use the Gingerbread Keyboard (free) after I have ran the screen calibration tool. Makes a world of difference if you ask me

Hello all,
I'm now using smartkeyboard, and so far it's good. The keys in llandscape are a little thin, so I'm still getting wrong keypresses, but on the whole, its an improvement.
Ill try this for a bit, then the thumb one.

If you get the paid gingerbread keyboard (about 63p) then u get advanced options to change the size of the keys. I went for that as the key height in landscape was annoying to say the least.... set the key height to about 55 and all good, can specify different dimensions for portrait/landscape too
63p well spent i reckon!

Nice, please do I will purchase the kb next time I have the vega! Thanks for the advice mate

On my vega I use Swiftkey, it has a prediction method for those that don't know i.e. it learns from how you type to predict the next word before you type anything saving you key presses.
This keyboard is ideal on something like the vega when we all know the screen is not perfect all the time.

erm, my screen is perfect all the time. Since I calibrated it with the app posted on Modaco.... Before then had dead spots and double characters etc.

Calibration!!

Higgsy's tip for the keyboard calibration is spot on. Stock keyboard is a lot better after calibration.
If you missed the tread check it out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915146

Hello all
Tried the thumb keyboard and while the concept is super, it somehow doesn't quite deliver.
Gonna. Try the paid gingerbread next. As this keyboard keeps inserting full stops where they're north wanted.

anoter vote for swiftkey here.
the prediction gets good after a while using it...you do whole words/sentences with very few presses...

I am using the Gingerbread Keyboard and I like the smaller key size. I like the Gingerbread Keyboard slightly better then my old standard: HTC-IME mod hires22.
I also have the Dell Streak 1.6 keyboard, but it is not the correct resolution. Maybe the keyboard off the new Streak7 will work better, or maybe someone could mod the package to work with our resolution. The reason I like the Streak is because it has Gingerbread-sized keys with a Num-Pad to the side instead of the top row. This makes it so the keys are not so wide across the entire landscape screen, which makes it much faster to type for me.
It would be great if someone invented a keyboard that has the dedicated top number row (instead of holding like the Gingerbread keyboard) when in portrait, but a right-side num-pad when in landscape!

Notion Ink keyboard mod - Thanks to gojimi to port this.
I found the Notion Ink keyboard ported from gojimi on XDA-Developers.
I love the keyboard on my WSL XVision (in Europe aka Advent Vega). But the colors are awfull. White on white, that is not very practical. So I made a small graphic mod to the keyboard. I tested it only on my WSL XVision, no guaranty if it breaks your device or destroy your SD card data. For me it works fine.
I attached some screen shots.

Multitouch keyboard anyone?

Has anyone gotten a multitouch keyboard to work on the A101? I've been trying like crazy but none of them work...tried the gingerbread keyboard port (from droid life and one from the market) but no dice. I really want that one!
Thx!

The A101 has two point multitouch, just confirmed with the multitouch tester.....and how else do you think pinch to zoom works?
Alright, yes - (i always thought of real multitouch as "more than 2 fingers").
I'm using gingerbread keyboard And it works great. You can find it on market
I'm not sure if this is the same from the market, but check out the Gingerbread keyboard in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875202.
Seems to work great, though you may need to select it, then the stock keyboard, then the Gingerbread keyboard to get the letters to show on the keyboard. Works fine after the initial selection.

Thanks for the info. I have tried that one and could not get it to show up. The reason I'm looking for the multitouch is because while typing with both thumbs in portrait mode (using Better Keyboard), I think I try to go to fast because it misses letters that I know I hit and I think it's because I haven't completely left off of the last keypress. It works fine and never misses when using just 1 finger. I was hoping a multitouch enabled keyboard (like the gingerbread keyboard) would fix that. Maybe I'll just have to adjust the way I type on it!
Thanks everyone!

I think it has more to do with the noticeable lag present in registering two separate single touches, rather than a lack of multitouch.
It's very odd the way it works, and even harder to explain. Basically it seems to register a second touch near immediately, but if you remove one finger and touch again, there's a noticeable delay.
The best I can explain it is with this image. The upper portion was drawn in a slow and deliberate manner, the lower portion was just scratched off quickly -- both with just one finger.

Good point. I think you're right about that. I got the Gingerbread Keyboard working on mine and it basically does the same thing. So I agree, I don't think it's necessarily a "multitouch" issue.
Hopefully, some tweaks in the future will help correct this. It's rather annoying.

Have you tried Thumb Keyboard at all? Puts the keys in very easy reach of your thumbs when holding the device in landscape or portrait. Just discovered it, and quite liking it!
unfortunately as the 101 only has 2 point multitouch, you wont be able to get it to register more than 2 simultanious presses on any keyboard app, even if the app supports it.
I found the Ultra Keyboard to work very good. It needs some time to configure it proper. But after that you have a keyboard which have quad keys like the IPad keyboard which types a lot better then the rectangle flat keys of the other keyboards.
I really like Smart Keyboard Pro.

How were you able to access it? It doesn't show up in the market for me on my Archos 70. I tried buying it on my Aria and then backup up the APK to install manually, but the program (understandably) doesn't support that. Kinda frustrating that I can't use the program I purchased on the device I want.
Thumb Keyboard
I am using Thumb Keyboard from the market and love it. It has different themes and layouts. I love the layout that splits the letters so they can be easily reached with your thumbs.
I saw another reccomendation for THumb Keyboard also, but i cant find it. maybe cause im on 43?
Not sure if it's true multitouch, but the keyboard from the Notion Ink Adam might do the trick. When testing, I found that you can hold down the Fn or Shift key and press a second key at the same time. Might be worth trying?
You can find it posted here.
Only problem is that the active key spots are slightly off, due to the Archos soft buttons!

Just a head's-up that the new 3.0 version of SlideIt Keyboard for Android is out and it rocks!
I've not a single complaint about this version and I've always wished I could have the best features of Swype, etc. and have the features of SlideIT. I really do think it is finally better than Swype in every way possible.

Ooops! Yes, I did. I requested a mod to edit the title for search purposes. Thanks.
Anyway, I've really been pleased with the performance of this software.
For me, the best things over Swype are:
delete on error erases the entire word, not just one letter (unless you want to)
multiple language access with one click literally.
shortcuts
text selection is better/easier
etc.

Watched the entire vid. Don't see a Mic key anywhere. It needs to be on the first default keyboard.
Otherwise, some nice features. I'd also prefer to have access to the cursor positioning arrow key more easily. Looks like at least 3 buttons to get there.
Thanks for the reference though.
I ve been using it since yesterday and i am definitely going to prefer it over swype. Lots of shortcuts and dictionary seems to be better than swype..well at least for me.

i prefer swype 10times over this.
plus swype morphs are sexy
After a quick trial run I'm liking it better than Swype on my rooted Vibrant. I'll try to remember to come back here and post some thoughts after a couple days.
One of my main problems with Swype was always their word choice window, SlideIT does it much better by putting the suggestions right above the top row of keys where they are with the stock keyboard, so I love that.
After a quick trial on my rooted Vibrant, I'm kinda liking it better than Swype for a few reasons.
1. The word suggestion is not a random pop-up that hides everything. It's right above the keyboard which makes much more sense (personal preference).
2. It appears to be more formal and accurate, especially when inputting new words and keeping the caps, like ASCE.
3. It's overall layout is more to my liking (personal preference).
4. You don't have to hunt for it, make sure the ROM you flash has it, or worry about losing it in the future.
Good find, OP. Thank you.
Still loving it so far. The one drawback I've noticed is the only numeric mode had the numbers across the top of the keyboard, there's no keypad mode that I could see.

Will this replace the swype.apk, or just add another keyboard?

It doesn't replace Swype. It adds another keyboard. If you wish, you can delete Swype. I have.
I was a long-time fan of Swype, and the previous iterations of SlideIT were pretty marginal in comparison, but V3 has come a long way and I use it daily and much prefer it. It's much more accurate than Swype, generally, in my experience, and it does a far better job in multi-language accuracy and much faster at switching languages. It's Spanish dictionary is better, for example. The shortcuts/abbreviations are an invaluable feature to me.

Anyone else tried the SwiftKey tablet beta yet?

SwiftKey has a beta for tablets now, and it has a special landscape mode for thumb typing where the letters are on the right sides of the screen and the numbers in the middle.
It's in beta test right now, and if you join on their forum you can get access to it. It is beta so it has some quirks (like when you've just rotated it, the suggestions show too low like in my screenshot below), and I am not sure I like the default theme yet (it doesn't show secondary keys!) but it's worth a try. http://swiftkey.net/vip is where you can join to try it.
Here's what it looks like:

Install the APK as normal (uninstall the beta for Smartphone if you're already using it) and then follow the "from market" part of this guide to copy the APK into /system/app. Reboot, and it should show up in NookColor Tools, same procedure as any keyboard on the Nook Color using the B&N Rom. Any other ROM it should just work.
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Replace_the_Default_Keyboard
BTW just wanted to let people know and help the SwiftKey folks get more feedback, I get nothing from this.
will try when back at home!!
I've tried it and have found the keys to be too small for a 7" screen. I've really enjoyed using ThumbKeyboard and hope the SwiftKey keyboard improves to that level of usability as I love SK's prediction engine.
I'm running the stock 1.1 ROM, rooted, and am trying to get the Beta installed right now. I have the original running fine, but prefer the thumb-keyboard split layout.
I installed the Beta, but can't get it to show up in my Keyboard selection. Not sure it's going to run on Eclair.

It does work on Eclair. You moved the .apk from /data/apps to /system/apps? And set the permissions to match others there? And rebooted? Try those if you have not and check again.

They SEEM to be, but bang out a sentence and see what happens. It's damn good at deciphering nonsense. Same as the Smartphone version, I type like ass on the screen yet most often it figures out the right words.

Thanks.
SwiftKey Tab beta seems cool
I've used it to send emails. Nothing special about it that I've seen so far. But it is nice to see a "tablet" getting some love.
edit: I've been using it since Monday. I don't like the interface ('neon') but the split (similar to Thumb Keyboard) is very nice. the keys are smallis buy not unusable. Overall, I like it and recommend giving it a try. Once new skins are made it'll be great.
Got IT
Installed this morning. Not too bad. Keys are too small. Don't think its going to replace my swype. I do love their predictive typing but not enought to stop me swyping.

Odd, did you change the prediction settings? I type terribly without correction, but it does a really good job fixing it for me. You might try some of the other options, there's "rapidfire typing" which is useful for some folks.

There are multiple layouts in Swiftkey, just the list is impossible to see on the Nook Color with the white-on-white problem. Apps expect some dialogs to be dark, where on the B&N ROM they're white.
Yep, there's AZERTY there. The problem is picking it I think. In Settings->Layout, try picking the 5th option... QWERTY is first, AZERTY is 5th in the list on my phone. Hopefully the tablet beta is the same. Otherwise, you could experiment I guess.
That's right for swiftkey beta for Phone, the swiftkey beta for tablet only have one option.
I'm running nookie froyo, no white-on-white problem here :/

1+ on that, since I have big hands. The stock keyboard with CM7 or the standard SwiftKey keyboard both beat the heck out of this "tablet" keyboard implementation. And I guess some find neon cool, but its hard on my eyes. Yes, I'm glad SwiftKey is trying, but .... I'll wait until functional wins out over 'Look at this cool keyboard, dude!" approach.

First, you need to put the APK on your SDcard:
Download link: here
Next you need to push to your SDcard either through adb or just using USB mass storage.
Afterwards copy to system/app/ using a file manager *ES file manager or Root explorer is recommended. Root Explorer for those of you who use paid apps or ES for those of you who want a free alternative. I used Root explorer.
Here is the VERY important part, mod the permissions to the following:
Code:
Read, Write
Read
Read
Finally, just reboot and you will have it.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Code:
You can redownload the stock APK from [URL="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15069134/LatinIMEbackup.apk"]here[/URL]
and follow the rest of the guide starting after you download. It's the same universally. Also note that not all keyboard apps work well in system which is why I did it with the stock gingerbread app. Ice cream sandwich keyboards aren't too /system friendly.
it works well. I hope we can get the ICS keyboard up and running. Their is just a small visual issue with background behind the keys being white not black like in your screen shots.

Found the fix for it but it's using another persons work so I'll wait until I have permission to post it.

I'd be happy if I could get Swiftkey Tablet up and running, but I'll give this a shot. I found the menu where you can change the colors of the default keyboard, but some other ones have added functionality that I'd like to have.

I'm using Swiftkey Tablet X on my NT- I had to side-load it using the instructions from the Alternative Keyboard thread, then I updated it from the Market and was then able to set it up. IMHO, it's the perfect keyboard for the NT.

nice I'm looking into swiftkey now. I bought it for my evo and liked it but then I got the ICS keyboard and I like its simplicity.

I tried that and couldn't get it to work, but that is a discussion either for PM's or another thread.
Works great. But same issue. Keys are grey, letters are black, but the background under the keyboard is white. Still, the way I depend on autocorrct, this is tits.
This thing gets better and better with each visit to xda.
Edit-nm. High contrast theme took care of that. Jes

Another beauty. It looks like all stock gingerbread apks will be able to be ported over if Barnes and noble just renamed and replaced with their own concoction of an app

How are you even getting the microphone to show on the keyboard? I can't find the setting for it anywhere and mine doesn't show in either portrait or landscape?
Mine only shows the comma key in that location.
You need to hold down the comma key on the gingerbread keyboard and go into settings.
Oh, and you need to have voice search installed.

After rooting my NT I installed a thumb keyboard, it did not work. Recently I followed your instructions and installed the gingerbread keyboard.
Holding down the comma key and going into the settings I was given an option of picking the thumb keyboard and was able to pick the options I want to use with the thumb keyboard. It's working great so far.
A very nice surprise.

Using AnyCut create a shortcut for "Android keyboard Debug settings".
Then click Theme, and change the theme to "Basic (High Contrast)" Rather than Gingerbread.
=)
Looks like the download link in the OP is dead. Can we get it again?
New thread for all the apps.

What is the best, most accurate keyboard app?

For typing (qwerty) . So far I have tried GO Keyboard. Im just so used to hardware keypads. I'm just trying to speed up a bit and cut my typos. Suggestions... ?
I like swiftkeyx, plus I got it for 10 cents during the 100 app sale. I'ts fast and I love how the predictions work. I personally don't like swipe/swype style keyboards, hence my recommendation.
Free = swype and works extremely well one handed.
My favorite, paid app btw but worth it, is swiftkey x. Absolutely amazing prediction capabilities. I have typed entire sentences before by just using their prediction word algorithm.

seriously, the learning prediction is out of this world. 75% of all my texts are done via prediction now and I believe that number is growing.
I dont like Swype. Not crazy about tracing my fingers over the letters. Seems more of a hassle and takez a while to get zippy on it. The Hackers kb looks interesting enough because it has the arrow keys. But, is it fast and accurate? Think it would be small in portrait mode to squish all them extra keys in.
Swiftkey x.. does it have trial or demo?

Appreciate it. Im going to check that one out and see how well it fairs.
Smart Keyboard Pro is the one I always seem to be coming back to.
I don't like the "swype type" keyboards at all. SwiftkeyX has absolutely AWESOME word prediction, but you can't resize the KB the way to can using Smart Keyboard Pro.
I like to text in portrait mode using the compact qwerty setup & SKP with its infinitely resizeable button height works super.

yea, I just noticed that but it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference what size I choose.
In the Smart KB Pro settings, it gives you a slider for key height in both portrait & landscape that basically allows you to make the keys any height you want.
I don't change the landscape setting, but I like to make the portrait keys a LOT bigger & this KB is the only one I've tried that allows you to do this.

I use the Thumb keyboard 4, I like the edits and cursor buttons at the bottom.

I uninstalled that GO keyboard app. I had more mistakes on that thing than I did with stock Gingerbread kb. That and I hate how it hid symbol keys in second page. And it constantly wanted to update other parts if the app. Actually, I uninstalled it because I think it blew up my IMO chat app. App worked flawlessly for 2 weeks straight.. then a day after I get GO kb.. im chatting and suddenly imo goes into a FC loop. I kill it.. it still show in the notifications but not TM.. look at the notifications, imo FC again...and again. I reboot same thing. idk what happen but i had to remove both imo and GO to get rid of all the FC loops...
Now trying out swiftkey x
I don't think I could live without Swype now. I love it.
SwiftKey hands down the best keyboard. It's the first thing I put on any phone I get.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
SwiftKey x rules. Been using it for a while. Best predictions by far. Also automatically spaces between words. It's also nice to pick up your predicted word and if you miss it, it brings it to one side so you can still choose from it.
Sent from my newly unlocked Rezound.. Thank you HTC.
didn't realize that you could increase the size of the swiftkey keyboard. I will have to try it out.
