A keyboard replacement for stock touch input that is small and fast. - EVO Shift 4G Themes and Apps

I am bored so I did a search in appbrain for keyboards. I saw some new ones and old ones I had forgotten about. I downloaded a few that looked interesting and tested away. I finally narrowed it down to a keyboard that looks like aosp and in landscape, it seems lightning fast! It's called dr.ben0x keyboard. It's free. I did some tests and the reasons I like it are because it's not the blinding white like the touch input stock one, in landscape I can type faster with the onscreen keyboard than the physical one (believe it or not), the suggested words are just above the keyboard and not floating (which many times gets in the way of seeing what I'm typing). That's another complaint I have with the stock touch input kb.
Yeah, it's not as small as the 70k something that the htc one is but at 660k, it's smaller than just about all the other aftermarket keyboards out there. It doesn't seem to get in my way when typing. The keys are larger in landscape. I was wanting the motorola multitouch keyboard so bad but couldn't install it yet without full root and a crowbar. This in landscape is fast enough I think to give motorola's keyboard a run for it's money. Like I said, this looks very much like an asop keyboard, colors as well. Carpel tunnel syndrom, here I come!

[Q] Which keyboard for the 43

I just received my 43 yesterday and I have to say text input is appallingly bad IMO. It doesn't seem to be any better portrait or landscape. Entering 15 character semi-complex passwords is nearly impossible to do reliably.
Are there replacement keyboards that make text entry bearable on the 43's resistive touch screen?

I don't fully understand what your problem is with the keyboard, I guess that you mean that it is not responsive enough? Maybe you can use swype, that works overall. Do not own this device yet, so can't really relate to your problem.
Offtopic: How do you like the A43IT overall? Is it good?
Edit: Heard a few people say that Ultra Keyboard is great on the A43IT, just type it in to google and download it for Android.

1/ the touch screen is very poor. I hit the letter "t" and will get get "g" or "d" and even "w".
2/ i have to type with my nail... a far cry from the speed i can thumb type on my ipod touch.
3/ edge of the screen is particularly inaccurate in portrait mode.
My overall impressions can be summed up as follows, "390' hit to right field.......foul".

[Q] Good SGP5 Keyboard?

I'm somewhat new to Android, but it looks to me like which keyboard you use is an option (Samsung, Swype) and that more can potentially be added on.
The only problem I have with Samsung's is that it's clearly designed for devices with smaller screens, and takes up a MASSIVE amount of space in landscape mode. Are there any good alternatives that anyone uses?
I got Swiftkey X when it was 10c in the market sale and it is excellent on the 5 inch screen.
I was going to look at Thumb Keyboard from Beansoft since it has a custom keyboard for the 5" screen. Anyone using that one?

yes, i've used. I've got it for free from amazon store (free app a day). It's perfect for 5'' screen
I recommend A.I.type
A.I.type is accurate, fully customizable and has the best text prediction in the Market.
You can't beat Swype from my perspective. Just so much faster than traditional typing.
SmartKeyboard Pro.

shapewriter keyboard

is anyone able to make this keyboard work on the rezound? it works, but its very tiny on our screens. i think the app was made for 3.5-3.7" screens like my old incredible. I love the keyboard, used it for over a year on my dINC, and now its really tiny on the rezound's screen and it makes it hard to use. any possibility of making this work?

The little things.

What are the little (or big I suppose) things that make you love your Note over your past phones? Also, if you've installed ICS, what are the little things you notice over GB?
Personally, there are a few things about the Note in general that make it the most awesome phone out there now and the foreseeable near future:
*Obviously the screen. Better than everything out there. 5.3 inches. Bam. Super AMOLED HD. Bam. This thing amazes me and everybody who has seen this thing.
*SPen. I originally thought it would be a cool novelty, but not much more. Boy am I wrong. I'm Swyping this whole message using the SPen and tablet Swype beta. Easily the fastest and most accurate speech entry I have come across. Also, using the SPen is super useful to jot down quick notes. Lastly, it is also really great for navigating the phone, especially while it it's laying on a table or desk. The smoothness that the SPen tip has allows me to only use my pen hand, whereas using a finger requires me to still use my other hand to hold it in place in the desktop because of the friction of my finger.
*Flip cover. I know most people don't like it much, but I think it's great. Not only does it protect my screen in my pocket, but I also love having it cover the screen while holding it up to my head for a call, as it keeps oils off of my screen, especially while I'm sweating during any physical activities. The texture of the back also has a grippy, yet nice to the touch feeling compared to the glossy stock white back. Lastly, it's a great way to hold the phone in portrait mode like a book with my thumb right in the hinge/crease.
Now for the little things about ICS over GB:
*Face unlock. Once you take enough calibration pictures, it's super quick and amusing, not to mention ****ing awesome. I feel futuristic as hell when I use it. Haha.
*Task manager. Love the swipe to remove thumbnails. Way better/much more visually appealing way of switching between apps.
*Animations. They seem so much smoother in general. Not too much to explain.
*Screen dimming. On GB, the transition from bright to dark just before the screen times out was instant, and the stark change bugged me. On ICS, it fades to the darker setting, and if you touch the screen to brighten it up, it scales back up to bright very smoothly again.
*Swyping while charging. On GB, if my phone was charging, for some reason, Swype would get very jumpy and inaccurate, the trail showing a jagged trail I was supposedly drawing. On ICS, it's just as smooth as when it's not charging.
*Overall setup of the system. The menus, how you add widgets and apps, and rearrange home screens all are more visually pleasing and better to me.
*ICS versions of apps. I love the clean lines of the ICS versions, as well as how some apps are completely different like the ICS version of Google Maps. Included in ICS apps is Chrome beta, which is very nice and smooth, only I wish I could put it in a desktop browser mode, as mobile versions of websites are irrelevant for the most part with this screen.
*ICS made the black crush issue way better. I know they could make it even better, and I'm sure it eventually will be through either Samsung or our awesome devs, but for now it's much better.

+1 on the screen/size.

I jumped from the Streak to the Note and I have to say I do enjoy the screen much better than my Streak, a lot clearer. But the 2 biggest reasons why I jumped was to move to a device with extra horsepower and a bigger community. DJ_Steve was a godsend for the streak but as time moves on, so do devs and I'm happy to be apart of a community where there are so many devs working all towards making our device the best it can be.
I love how people first make fun of me for having this phone, but then when they actually hold it and play with it they discover how awesome it is

not happy with logitech pro keyboard

so, bit the bullet and bought a logitech pro keyboard on sale for 100 bucks at best buy. overall, i'm not impressed by it, and will be returning it for a refund.
the case itself is adequate for the job, though somewhat annoying to use. it fits the tablet, although its not as sturdy as i'd like. when opening the case, its very easy for the device to pop out of the tabs. closing the cover, the ends don't quite align up with each other and it takes a few moments of fiddling with them to get them properly seated together. despite the presence of magnets, the device doesn't turn off when the cover is closed. even though there are little rubber pads toward the end, even a little pressure will push the device into the keys. since i keep my tablet in a backpack most of the time, i'm worried that this will cause damage over time to the device. a possible work around would be to fit a piece of felt between the device and the keys before closing the case.
the keys themselves feel solid, and the typing experience is good. response time and key spacing are fine. didn't have any trouble pairing the device.
there are two main reasons why i'm returning it. first, the macro keys that let you pull up the browser, email, etc. cannot be customized. want them to map to different apps? tough noogies. they gave me the runaround at logitech support on this, until ultimately admitting there's no official way to fix the issue. (there's some process involving rooting, freezing, blah blahbity blah that doesn't work for everyone... no thanks.)
second, when using the keyboard, a semi-transparent black bar appears along the bottom of the screen that covers whatever is already there and makes that area of the screen untappable. so things like the task manager and close all apps are unusable since this bar covers them. i've included a pic, though it may be a bit hard to see it. you can get rid of it by hitting the back button, but every time you touch another key it comes back. turn the keyboard off and the bar goes away... turn it back on, and the bar comes back as soon as you hit a key. this problem is the deal-breaker for me. changing launchers didn't fix the problem, happens in both touch wiz and nova. since i haven't seen any mention of this problem before, i don't know if its a one-off thing just affecting me or if others have this problem as well.
bummer.

Very sorry you are having problems with that keyboard. I use it and am very happy with it. No fit problem here. Haven't had any problems with tablet coming out of the case either. That black bar problem looks like a defective keyboard maybe. Try to return it to Best Buy. I don't know of any keyboard that has programmable keys for this tablet. Maybe a standalone Bluetooth keyboard might have this capability but then you would not have that protective case that the Logitech has.
With regards to the black bar issue, out of curiosity are you using a custom software keyboard for on-screen keyboard use?

That black bar looks like the type-suggestions bar... check your settings, specifically the settings --> controls --> language & input --> keyboard&input methods --> Default --> turn off the 'use on-screen keyboard' toggle.
And if you're using a third party keyaboard (that isn't swiftkey), check the settings, there might be a setting for suggestions with keyboards.

ended up returning it. now i'm looking at the amazon basics blue tooth keyboard (cheap!) and the samsung cover keyboard (not cheap!) honestly, i can learn to live with the macro keys problem... but its good to know that the black bar issue isn't a widespread thing.

thanks for the suggestion; was hoping it would do the trick, but unfortunately it didn't. i wonder if it has something to do with using the keyboard and the bamboo stylus at the same time? i tried using only one at a time, but that didn't do any good either.
