Unlocking a Virgin Mobile Canada Phone...? - Legend Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I emailed Virgin Mobile the other day and asked if they can unlock my phone for me, and they said they currently don't let their members unlock their phones yet. I'm just wondering if there's any service that unlocks a Virgin Mobile phone, but not for GSM network, I'm WCDMA. Thanks for the help.

There are a number of websites that provide unlock codes for typically between $5 and $30. I heard good things about this one, but haven't used it myself:
http://www.mobileincanada.com/How-To-Unlock-Your-Cellphone
Just a quick note: if you plan on switching to Bell, you may not need to unlock your phone. This is according to a few posters on Howard Forums.
Cheers.

Thanks so much for the help!

Same here. My Legend was from Virgin mobile, now on Bell. I didnt need to do anything but switch sim cards.

Yeah, Bell and Virgin are the same network. Bell owns Virgin. But I didn't know that I didn't have to switch SIM cards. Thanks for the help again.

Would a bell phone work on virgin though? Seems weird you don't have to unlock phones. I used unlock roger phones to use on Fido, and Rogers own Fido. Same as bell owning virgin. Maybe they just didn't bother, and people don't really check.

Well my friend and I tried with our phones, he used my Virgin Mobile SIM card in his Bell phone and it worked. But I can't really be %100 it'll work, it was on a Blackberry. If you have a friend on Bell try it out, or you can even email Bell. But the reason you don't have to switch SIM cards between Bell and Virgin is because they're the same company so either way whether with Virgin or Bell, the money is still going to the same people.

I want to unlock the iphone that I bought for 220 and although he said it was with bell it is really with virgin. I called customer support and they said that if I was on pay as you go for 30 days they would unlock it for $75. I suppose this is the best way...

Whoa, whoa, whoa, $75? Go on Kijiji to find some software unlocks for much cheaper, or code unlocks for slightly cheaper. No Canadian should feed Robelus more money, and at that price it's just makes me cringe!

A, total bs, you really did not think of the fact that a phone from the states would not work in canada? Bull**** you just want someone to get the unlock code for you because you bought the phone not knowing it would not work and are screwed now.
Yes i know stupid mistaek
I bought the american version because the canadian version could not work on my carrier Mobilicity. Most mobilicity phones come unlocked and i thought that because they used the same frequencies that T mobile would too. Yes i know stupid mistake should have done it in america. And it's not stolen

Seriously you two should NOT give answers if you do not know wtf you are talking about. ALL t-mobile Vibrants are sim locked ie you cannot use it in any other country (ie with other carriers, even tmobile outside the US) but the united states and even here you cannot use it with any other carrier except t-mobile. I am about to call tmobile and have mine unlocked too so I can use it in Canada and Europe.
I usually buy t-mobile sim cards in Europe but I need my phone unlocked to be able to do that. But I will admit, since the Vibrant is pretty much the same as all the other Galaxy S phones, I also thought it could be used everywhere Tmobile was available (sans the simlock).
To the OP, go to Ebay if tmobile cannot help you, there are many companies that will unlock your phone for you for a fee. Or you can use the unlock generator from this site (but there have been mixed results with that). But even with the phone unlocked, does not mean it will get all the ranges oversees as it does here. Tmobile uses different Hz oversees than they do in the states so you may not get 3G (not sure, just using my experiences from other phones), so you may wanna check on that before going through all the effort of unlocking etc etc. You may be better off with a i9000 in Canada if thats your primary residence.

Thanks for the help o will look into both those methods you stated
go to Market, and look for SGS Unlock, if the free version can not generate the unlock code, go for the Pro version.. or you could do it yourself for free by following instructions here:

Sim unlock

What sites do you use to sim unlock HTC Amaze?
I checked a couple and found out they scams - they only take money and do not send out unlock codes. It would be great if those who unlocked would mention sites they used and the unlock cost so that the rest of us could find the best unlock price and would not get into scam unlock sites
just call tmobile, takes 24 for them to email u the code.

You can say you're not a T-mobile customer but would like to use their T-mobile phone. Most reps don't really care much, they might try to sell you a contract or whatever, but in the end, they'll just give in and give you the code. Well that's how it was about a year ago. idk if it changed now.
Oh and from what I remembered it is actually much easier to get the code when you're not a customer, because if you were, they'll be asking you why do you want it unlocked and stuff (are you changing carriers) etc etc.
yeah call tmo, I was in mexico unlocking phones, just ask for the IEMI number, and within 2/3 days you get an email with the code, no charge...

It only lets you use it with other GSM carriers/providers. That's all. Nothing else.
I called T-Mobile twice and they basically said that since I do not have an account with T-Mobile they can't give me an unlock code. They said I need to call HTC directly. When I called HTC they said that I need to call T-Mobile to get the unlock code.
That's why I would like some reports on what online unlocking services anyone used to unlock the Amaze so that people like me wouldn't get scammed by some website that only take the money and do not provide an unlock code. Also the unlock price would give an idea of what site is the cheapest of the reliable ones.

Usually the prices in Canada are higher than in the states buying a phone off craigslist. I bought it in Seattle for $380. Also I'm not on Telus in Canada and Telus is a CDMA provider. If they offer GSM service it would be the same as of AT&T band. I'm on Wind which operates on the same band as T-Mobile so to make sure my phone works on my carrier I bought a phone from T-Mobile.
I started this thread just to find out what online unlocking sevices are reliable and cost less so that I and other people who buy phones off eBay or craigslist could find an easy way to unlock their phones.
Try http://www.cellunlocker.net/
you can also use:

I've used it to get an unlock code for an Inspire (which I used on the Roger's network) only took 5 min's to receive the code. I'm currently waiting on a response regarding a Telus Amaze unlock code, guess it's no so fast on release day.

Will ZU C6806 from Bell Mobility (Canada) work in the U.S.?

Looking to get a ZU, preferably the 6806 since I'm with AT&T, and I found one for sale from Canada, probably on their Bell Mobility network...
Does anyone know if this would this work here in the US?
Also, on a side note, anyone familiar with any issues purchasing from Canada via ebay... customs, duties, taxes, etc.?
Thanks in advance.

I hate being such a newbie...
- What does having a sim lock mean?
- I thought the Z ultra 6806's were sold as unlocked phones... has a different meaning?
- I'm not interested in customizing the the ROM, or rooting, or anything similar, (at least not yet) so this is not an issue for me.
Help?
having a sim lock means the phone will only work with the provider that sells the phone, in canada only bell is the exclusive dealer for the XZU, if you want to use this phone on any other network you will need to buy an unlock code. they go for about $30 and takes a day, you provide them with your IMEI and they will email you the code when its processed.
im in canada but since the phone is from bell and im on rogers i had to get the sim unlocked for it to work on my network.
if the phone for sale is a bell phone then no it isnt unlocked, the only other local place to buy it is from the sony store and those come sim unlocked, the only huge difference from the bell phone and sony store is that the bootloader is locked for bell, if you read the previous post that means its harder to root and we can not use custom roms ( personally for me its not a huge downfall since i like the oem roms more atm)
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks at&t uses band 4 for lte so does bell and rogers ( i receive lte) so it should be fine.
the only thing you have to worry about to use the phone is spend an extra $30 for sim unlock.
if anything in my post is wrong feel free to correct everyone as im just trying to be helpful =)

locked and no way that i know of changing it as sprint version doesnt have root yet.
From Sprint's unlock policy:
I am a former Sprint customer or was never a Sprint customer but have purchased a Sprint device from a third party other than Sprint. Can I get the MSL code?
For individuals owners who can provide the telephone number last associated with the device, Sprint may be able to provide the applicable MSL Code if the account associated with the device is in good standing (service or installment contract fulfilled, payments are current, no write-off balance, not associated with a phone sent to collections, phone not reported lost or stolen, etc.).

Important thing here is where are you located;
In US - Most probably not, until someone finds a hack for it. Sprint certainly doesn't want you to use their phone on GSM in US.
Outside US - You may get the SIM card slot unlocked from Sprint (done via OTA, not thru code) if some conditions are met like account should be in good standing, shouldn't be a bad ESN & phone should be 90 days old on the account (some people in past have been able to get past this requirement).
Apart from these, you also need to make sure that GSM/UMTS/LTE bands your carrier use are supported by Sprint G3.
I am in the same boat as you, looking to buy a Sprint G3 & use on GSM. Since I'm not in US, I can definitely use it once unlocked but the problem is how to ask Sprint for the unlock when you are not a customer & don't have an account with them.

Um, yes it is. You have to get the MSL from Sprint in order to unlock their phones for usage on GSM networks. It's all explained in their Unlock Policy on Sprint.com.

Well, I say it again.. MSL has to do nothing with GSM slot unlocking for Int'l networks. For this, Sprint pushes an OTA to the phone which unlocks the SIM slot.
If you still think its explained in a different way (involving MSL) on the Sprint website, plz post the link.
Just wait until we have root and I will see if I can unlock it for everyone.

Simply because Sprint phones are much cheaper than any other carrier if bought slightly used or from sites like swappa and ebay. However due to strict unlocking policies of sprint it is near impossible to unlock their devices if you are not a customer. Heck even if you are a customer they give you a hard time. Hence phones on Sprint tend to have much lower resale value for this very reason and hence the reason for people attracted to these devices because they do have the hardware capability of using gsm networks it's only sprint/software that's holding these phones back.
As of now i would hold off on buying a Sprint lg g3 if you plan to use on another network. The phone doesn't even have root yet for sim unlocking hacks to even be attempted. Check out the Sprint HTC m8 sim unlock hack is out for that phone and very capable device with much more development.
I get that I should buy a phone for a given carrier - However, if I were to buy a Sprint LG G3 that WAS unlocked, would I be able to use it on T-Mobile would I be able to have some reasonable expectation to have UTMS+/LTE connectivity?
(if I can buy an unlocked sprint phone for ~ $275 vs ~ $450 for a t-mobile version...)

Though this is old ill comment my idea of why. The very reason is , i believe anyway is that sprint phones' resale value is the cheapest overall ...why? Because of the sprint reputation as well as the old days it would not connect to gsm period. However today its global capabilities has began a big buy spree on this model mainly for price ..This is why you might see as example on craigslist, s4 175 as opposed to verizon 250 or T-Mobile etc. Sprint has always had cheaper or lower resale value. Not sure how much longer but ive bought many sprint devices for this reason ..also since sprint sells to more lower to no credit with the spending limit option they are more prone to blacklisted phones and or risk. Lol. So to me i believe this is why you see lots more sprint phones today trying to get on gsm or any. Peace.
Sent from rotary technology Phone
Most phones after 2012 using LTE have to have a Sim card slot.
Verizon had to unlock their phones because of the LTE bands they use.
Prior to that Sprint was using Clear as thier 4G provider using WiMAx. When they built up their network their network they had to use sim card slots
Just like Boost, Virgin, they lock down the sim using UCC.
By locking down the sim and the modem you cant access the service menus to take the lock off.
Currently the HTC One, One MAX, and M8 for Sprint are capable of gsm but man is it a pain.
There may be a way hopefully since yes Sprint phones are very cheap in resale value. I got a HTC One MAX for $150. Took me 3 days to unlock, s-off and figure out the instructions on the internet so I can use it on T-Mobile.
I came here to see if the LG G3 can be done as well...so far looks like a no go.
So far the Note 3, Mega and other Samsung phones can be unlocked.
I think it's a steal to get a 5.9" 1080p Quad Core phone for $150. Cheaper than the Desire 820 GSM which is only 720p for $350.
The sim can be unlocked ..... All you have to do is read.

[Q] sprint via at&t

Ok so we all know why we got our gear s from at&t (100$) cheaper than sprint.so now after i unlock the phone is there a way to connect it so srint.if yes than how if no than state details why not and whats the best choice for unlocked at&t gear s device ....
Sprint version is CDMA. I think that is why it also cost more. ATT version is gsm version with a sim card. I dont think they will work.
In order to use any phone on a CDMA carrier, it must meet two conditions:
1. It must support CDMA. The AT&T and T-Mobile versions are GSM only, no CDMA support.
2. It must has ESN (each CDMA device has one) already in the carrier's database. There is no known (official) way to put foreign device ESN into the database other than carrier itself. That means you are pretty much limited to devices sold by Sprint only. Even though Verizon is CDMA as well, you can't use any Verizon devices.
Yeah. That's a tall order. Atleast to use all functionality of services. Pairing is fine and using the features of the marriage between your device and GS. But standalone, I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen.
Although. Maybe using Boost or Virgin Mobile may work? I believe they use sim cards. I could totally be wrong though. But i thought they did.
Sent from my SM-N910P
Boost and Virgin Mobile all run off of sprint network. The best thing would be to return the watch to att and just pick up a sprint version. Price wise it only 80 bucks more but then you know you can use it on your network.

Metropcs/Simple mobile/GoSmart/walmart plan/Red Pocket/Straight talk /net 10

That wasn't confusing at all ...
Haha.
Sprint and Verizon sim cards are for LTE. This watch definitely does not support LTE.
There are definitely two versions that were tested by the FCC, those were the GSM and the CDMA models. I thought at first that it might have a universal radio (CDMA/GSM hybrid) because the Snapdragon 400 in the device supports that. But the FCC didn't license it that way, so #sadface ...
The ONLY benefit to buying on on your same carrier is to get a discount on the device (if you can call Verizon's $349 a discount), and to have a discounted plan ($5-10/mo) to use its independent phone and data ... but you'd be under contract for two years ... that's a long time and quite the commitment.
Most of us just paid AT&T 299 outright and walked out with the device. Some have had to contact AT&T to request unlock, I, for some reason have NOT ... my T-Mobile sim also works in it and did out of the box ... I believe I had a VERY knowledgeable customer service rep where I bought it, and she knew what was up!!!!!! (AT&T in Henderson Nevada by the Sunset Station Mall, I will never go anywhere else! they can have all the monies :good

That was a good look.
I got mines at Sprint and just cashed out on it. Wasn't concerned about the price, nor the plan. Knew all about it prior to buying. I dont regret where/how I got it one bit. That $299 tag is a great deal though. Lol
