If they change the architectural software structure of Ice-cream(2.4 or 3.1?) then no it would not upgrade, But I would bet a dollar the phone will be able to handle at least 2 or 3 more upgrades before software and apps will require a larger ram and duo core cpu
BTW way to the other posting....... froyo, gingerbread etc are the code names they gave each version of android....... 2.2, 2.3 etc

i have this rom gingerbread 2.3 from another forum but im a noob how do i flash

Well either you or he was confused. There's more than a couple Gingerbread themes out there, but thats all they are is themes. There is one EXPERIMENTAL Gingerbread build out, but as such, its not stable and could not be used daily.
Its being worked on, but Samsung has not even released the 2.2 source yet. When that happens, maybe some doors will be opened in that direction.
But as of right now there is NO stable Gingerbread rom, no matter what your friend told you. If there was you would have gotten actual help, instead of some of the less serious responses.

OP the gingerbread rom can be found in the development forum.

What does OP means ?
So, once I get to the development forum how do I get it and install it on my phone ? Thanks for the information and help. Appreciate it.

Didn't want to have a go at you but since I've seen people get slaughtered on these forums when they don't really deserve it I think its only fair.
This thread deserves slaughtering! "They" do know how far they are, but so do I - I know they still haven't cracked it.
So how can they give you a timeline? If they could then they would have cracked it. They aren't waiting for a progress bar to reach 100%, they are actually trying to hack into it. I don't even now anything about android development but I'm intelligent enough to realise it takes work, especially when its not paid for. Let them get on with it and don't pressure them with stupid questions making them look incompetent.
Please close this thread! It's a useless topic

Buddy your post is worthless they dont know the poster above u explained it to you.. they might think their close but they can also run into a problem that would get them stuck for a long time.. so noone knows wait and see like the rest of us.. thats why there is a thread like custom rom dev and excelent progress on cyanogen so you can read whats going on and what the progress is. Read the forum.
And i also think the mods should close this thread as it is a joke.

For you to understand.. Lets say they are @ 99,99%, 1 small tiny thing can enormously slow down the proses or even make it (almost) impossible. No realistic person can put a timeline on these jobs.
A smart dev will never say it almost done before its really done.

Obviously some regular users on this forum don't get it. For a newbie, these forums are very, very difficult to extract exact information from.
There are so many different threads to look at.
Then once you find the thread, sometimes you still can't get an answer because the language spoken, is very much developer only.
A simple, no, they haven't cracked it yet, but they are still working very hard, would have been an easy, quick answer for all who was looking.

Why don't you guys just look at the developers thread and see how far away they are? You make your own assumptions but at least you will know what they are working on at the moment. Like last I checked was working on ram disks. But please no posts. Just look if your curious.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Right now, imho no one works on cracking the bootloader, but the managed to boot from a custom ramdisk, however its still far from a full working image (right now its more a proof of concept) usable for simple users.
That is my impression as well after reading the dev thread.
It seems they "gave up" on the bootloader, or are focusing on booting the stock kernel, and after that instead of running the stock init scripts and OS to load another OS. (but the kernel is the same)
please correct me if i'm wrong.
I'm in no hurry to get a custom OS, but i'd still appreciate if the guys who are working on it could let us know, what exactly they're doing (no timelines of course)

Should I ota update?

On December15 the official froyo is getting released through OTA. If I update my phone which is rooted and has oclf lag fix will it soft brick and is there a way to update without getting soft bricked? How?
Don't comment saying install a froyo ROM I don'tlike roms and I will not use them at least not now.

Research shows the update folder for root seems to be the culprit for ota brick. I suggest unroot your phone and install the ota. I've done it twice with no issues so far.

Ouch... There are plenty of people here who run stock roms. I would assume he rooted for benefits like tethering, metamorph and many others like the lagfix. IMO It was a viable question worth answering.
OTA is fine for rooted phones. The lag fix probably will be an issue.
I always wait for a developer to take the ota, enable root and make it a flashable zip.much better than ota in my opinion.
Not sure how you think you know the release date... You need to qualify that.

ICS custom ROMs timeline?

Specifically a question for developers:
So I'm just curious when do you guys think an ICS custom ROM might be available for our vibrants?
More specifically, has google released enough of the SDK and/or ICS code for someone to actually make a working ICS ROM?
Can't wait to see it in action!
Thanks
Edit: my question really is:
what requirements do developers need to start working on a custom ROM when a new OS is released?

3-4 Months until you have something usable. That is provided the Vibrant still has developers left to work on it. A lot of ppl switched.

[email protected] easy! Anyone anywhere who had working ics on a phone would be on every forum bragging till their head pops off..
There are hundreds of articles that say that google is releasing the source code once "it is officially on devices".
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2395048,00.asp
How long will it take them to have a working rom is another question. The gps issue we have with gingerbread has never been actually fixed, I think it is a driver issue..?
Either way, it all depends, but it IS a valid question once the source is released, until then people are just going to flame your thread.

First of all, it's still a question, regardless of the content, unless there is a specific development thread about ics, this question belongs in the q&a section, you're not someone special where the rules don't apply.
Secondly, since source for ics hasn't even been released yet (this is the vibrant, so some sdk port won't ever work, regardless of your secret hopes and dreams), and even then, it's gonna take people a bit to get situated with the new code, and get used to the new features, apis, and bugs.
To ask for a timeline for something that's not even out into phones that it's actually built for is kinda insulting to people IMHO.
But, I give it 2-3 months after source drop to get into a basic useable form on the vibrant.

How do you know if my Droid X2 is Liberty or Eclipse?

Whats the difference on them or what I don't get it thanks in advance!!
Eclipse and liberty are just roms that you can flash onto your x2 if you have rooted your phone. If you or someone you know hasn't personally put them on your phone, then you'll have neither. It isn't something that would be on there from the manufacturer.

all I am trying to say is try to NOT be harsh...some things can read harsher than intended when type.
im not trying to say u didn't or that no one is trying to help out.
but it is also inevitable, that people no matter what they have read, will still need that little bit of "extra" info on "what to do now"
especially since our X2 can be picky with what you do or the process you use to do it
I really just said what I did in hope to "preempt" any "mean spirited" replies.
imagine how u would like to be answered when entering a site and following the rules at least to not post questions in dev section and u really don't understand all these : ROM, SBF, OTA, root, p3's, su, busybox, CWM, bootstrap, recovery, stock, modded, etc... words and what they mean.
now im DEFINITELY NOT saying go ahead and write out exactly everything the person needs to do. I am just saying don't be harsh. not that u were. or anyone else in this thread((yet))
just saying a bit of guidance and clarification on things asked is nice to see....basically common courtesy.....
imagine how u felt or I felt or anyone feels entering this "world" of flash addicts who do this every day lol.
((now if this was posted in dev forum as new thread I would call the DAWGS and say have at em for not reading the rules at all Hahaha))(
I am sorry ..this post has gotten longer than intended and I have succumbed to rambling and being off topic. ....
((don't mind the guy sitting on the couch eating leftover turkey/stuffing/ drinking too many beers(celebration ale yum!) ←←he talks to.much )
Lol
I think I.was a bit harsh.
Sorry!
You do tend to ramble on ash haha
But its a good thing, i tend to learn from your posts!

Sorry guys I did get it to work just fine now but I guess I really should've of read a little more but I appreciate all youlls help!

[Q] Noob to XDA Dev. Looking to see if I understand this right regarding ICS ROMs.

Hey guys! I've lurked around here for a while. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II for ATT a few months ago after being a longtime iPhone user. Therefore, I'm fairly new to the whole Android tweaking process. I want to install an ICS ROM onto my phone, particularly CM9. I've read the stickies, and am really trying to understand, but at the same time, do not wish to brick my phone. So could someone tell me if this is correct? Or where I'm wrong? Based on what I've read here, to install ICS, I need to...
1. Root my phone as outlined in the thread for that. (The one about not activating the yellow triangle. Since I'm on 2.3.6, I'll need to use "Odin3 One-Click Downloader".)
2. Backup my apps and texts and crap using Titanium Backup to my SD card.
3. Install the proper kernel (where do I find this?) using Mobile Odin.
4. Make sure CWM is active, backup NAND (I assume this is an option?) and flash CM9.
5. Flash Google Apps.
6. Restore my Ti backup.
Thanks guys for the help! And sorry if I'm being stupid/completely misunderstanding.
Read, useless thread is useless

Read, read and read some more. Do a search for Hellraiser as there are no true ICS ROMs for this phone yet, only i900 ports.
If you need to ask questions like this, you are not ready for ICS and ICS is not ready for you.
Since I9100 kernel source code has only been out for a week and we had a bunch of I777-specific **** to fix - while lots of progress has been made things are not quite working yet.
man some people are rude in here....
And others are lazy. Welcome to XDA.
There are a lot of different roms. Usually they rewrite the kernel within the install of the rom. But basically you have the right idea...

And some people expect others to do the work for them. Remember, no one in here gets paid to be helpful. This is primarily a self-service forum.

This is a legit question. He's done the research and just needs a little reassurance. If you can't help keep your troll mouth shut.

Actually, it isn't a legit question as there is not yet a legit ICS ROM for the i777.
You're logic is just plain wrong. What has that got to do with anything, you just like to troll.

Facts are facts, loser. There is not yet a fully-functioning official ICS ROM released for the i777, so any talk of one is premature. The guy admits in the title of this thread that he is a noob and doesn't quite understand. These are exactly the people who should not be flashing ANYTHING, let alone a ROM that is not ready for primetime. But keep on encouraging him and others so that the forum gets filled with people needing help to fix what they messed up. I'm sure you'll be rewarded with tons of adulation for your efforts. Troll indeed.
