[App] Thumb Keyboard Now Working Well for NC - Nook Color Themes and Apps

UPDATE: 4/30/11
Thumb KB 4.0, Beta 3.1 is now available at the following location: http://thumb4beta.blogspot.com/
If you have Thumb KB already installed from the Market, you must uninstall that version first before installing the new beta.
Some very nice changes so far....enjoy!
Thanks to Paul @ Beansoft for his very hard work on this new version!!
------------------------------------------------------------
Original Post:
I have been working with Paul, developer of the Thumb Keyboard (TKB) app, over the last couple of weeks to fine-tune the various layouts available on the TKB for the NookColor.
As of today, we tested the various layouts and they are working great! No longer does the bottom row disappear like it does with the current version available in the Market. A new version, with the new enhancements for the NC, should be available tomorrow.
This is great news, as this keyboard is incredibly easy, intuitive, and flexible to use on my NC. Appelflap is a very responsive dev and is doing a great job in supporting the NC community with these recent changes to his app.
A big thanks goes out to him for his patience with my testing and for a great app that makes typing on my NC so much better.
[My NC: Rooted, running v1.1.0r2 by Decad3nce, OC'd using 1.1Ghz OMAP3630 by Dalingrin]

I'm really looking forward to this, I have big fingers so I'm "all thumbs" to start with.

Went to market and picked it up but could not figure out how to enable it in the nook. Looks like an interesting concept. Will buy again but can you tell me how to activate it? Refunded until then.

I second that. I bought it too but have no clue how to get it to show up i the list of keyboards. I've done everything from renaming the zip to apk, renaming the latin ime and even copying the zip and the apk to system still to no avail. I see theres going to be an update tomorrow hopefully it fixes the the installation issue but if not can anyone who has gotten this to work please offer a solution.

the apk that you have to move to system/app (as with other keyboards) is actually located in data/app-private. move that guy over and maybe change permissions. its been a while but i think thats how i got this working.
edit: after doing that, i also had to reinstall by clicking on the apk that i moved. it then showed up as a selectable keyboard.

This is what I did to finally get it working. It took me a very long time to get this keyboard recognized in the NookColor Tools as an optional keyboard, but here is what I did:
1) Backing up the Thumb KB on my Droid X using "My Backup Pro" app
2) Transferred the newly created backup from my DX to my NC
3) Used Root Explorer to go into the backup file and and copied the .apk to /System/App
4) From within Root Explorer, installed the .apk (I was already mounted as R/W)
I could just not get it installed from the Market, for whatever reason...even after copying the .apk from /Data/App-private to /System/App.
As a side note, it does seem like renaming the LatinIME.apk in /system/app was something I tried and worked, in addition to what I performed above. I have since renamed that file back and I still have the Thumb KB in my menu option.
Let me know if this works, realizing that backing up from another device may not be possible for everyone.

when you tried copying the apk from data/app-private, did you then install by clicking on the apk while it was in system/app? that was the key point for me.

After copying the .apk to the /system/app folder, I did run the installer directly from within Root Explorer and this worked for me.

I was also helping the Dev out and testing this, and it works great. I did do a restart after I moved the .apk to the system/app folder. Using this keyboard makes a lot more sense for a tablet than the other keyboards. I can type faster now without having to put down the Nook, or feel like I going to drop it on accident.

Been looking forward to seeing the "not completely compatible with Nook" note go away. Thanks for the heads-up. =)

This worked for me

problem parsing package
I downloaded thumb keyboard from the market and then moved the
com.beansoft.keyboardplus.apk
from data/app-private into /system/app (with root explorer)
In root explorer I tapped on the apk and hit install
then I got "problem parsing the package"
any help?

Saw this today. Looks like great minds think alike...

problem parsing package - fixed
I don't know what happened but somehow I had my order cancelled (must have hit something somewhere along the line). I downloaded from the market again and it is working.
I've only trie dit for a few minutes but I think I am going to love it!

Exact same problem with parsing package. Looking forward to getting this working.

Same issues as above. Great idea though. Refunded until confirmed it can install from market with no tinckering.

Thanks 360Razir for helping me out by testing the keyboard on the NC!
For people with a parser error: do you rename the apk when copying it over? Renaming could be the source of the parsing problem.
Furthermore I turned off copy protection on the market. This should reduce the installation hassle a bit.
I'm planning to make a installer for (rooted) NCs. Can someone describe the exact steps that have to be taken to install TKB on a NC? That would be great (please use the non protected app on the market as the starting point of the description)

One minor issue I noticed; when using the 7" symbol/numeric keyboard in portrait, when I press the ., key, it enters a period in the text box as it should, but the key confirmation popup displays a 0 .

Help getting slideit going?

I've got slideit on my nook, but can't seem to activate it. It tells me I need to activate it manually, but when I go to settings/keyboard, the screen flickers and takes me to the home screen. I've tried disabling almost all the running apps and rebooting, but the same thing still happens.
I've been able to find help on rooting, adding apps, etc, on this forum, so maybe someone could give me some advice.
Try moving the apk from data/app to system/app folder then you should be able to install and setup the keyboard.

That's where it is now. I followed the directions on another thread, but the problem seems to be not being able to get into settings/keyboard.
Are you using the NookColor Tools app for settings, or the stock settings?
I recommend NCT.

I had been trying with the stock. In NCT there's the option to choose keyboard but slideit isn't listed. I'll try downloading the apk and putting it in system/app again.
I'm also having a problem with SlideIT. I've pushed it to the device, and when I bring up NCT it's in fact the only option to select. However, it never actually comes up. In other words, if I enter a text entry box the keyboard never pops up.
Try messing with the permissions once it is in the systems/app folder. I've neutral been giving them full user permission but that might not be needed. Also sometimes a reboot is needed.

so what did you do to get it to work?
Lol throw us a bone here.. how do you get slideit working?
How i got mine working.
I installed it using dropbox. I put my apk file in dropbox, then i install it. Then i go to my sd card using root explorer, there is a folder called dropbox which the apk gets copied to. I copy and paste the apk in \system\app and then it still didnt work, so i went to the file, mounted as r/w in root explorer, then you long hold on the file name, and it gives the options of "permissions" which you select and then i checked all the boxes. I rebooted after that, which at this point you can use nook tools to set the keyboard.
Now that i helped with all that, how in the hell do you use this thing? I saw videos of swipe, and it looked amazing, to me this thing is like a regular keyboard although i can draw lines through it, it just has no clue what i am trying to type. maybe i will search for a tutorial or something.

This is easiest to understand when viewed.
As a simple test, place your forefinger on the letter T, and, without lifting it, slide diagonally over to E, then to S, and then back to T. Now lift your finger. If the word "test" did not appear, then your copy of SlideIT isn't finding its dictionary.

I followed these steps exactly and got to the point where I could see SlideIT as a selectable keyboard. I selected it and then tried to type in a field and a note and it doesn't pop-up. I rebooted after that just to make sure and still no good.

Try installing it, so it'll be in data/app, then copy it into system/app - changing permissions, and also keeping the original apk in data/app. Then reboot, and you should be able to select it in NookColorTools.
That worked! Thanks
I can't find the apk after download. It does not exist in the data/app when I am viewing it in Astro file manager lite after performing an install via Appbrain or directly from the market. Is there an alternate way to get the apk? I purchased the app.

If it's really installed, it's in there somewhere. Look for com.dasur.slideit.apk
Still no luck. Isn't there a workaround? I imagine jve got the apk Somehow off his device since he loaded it on dropbox.
Thanks in advance!
Crap, so the developer overnight put the apk for a demo version online and I was able to get the apk into my app directory with root explorer. However I then went into the SlideIT application and changed input method. The app has a little text input box to do that. Unfortunately after doing this the app wanted a registration code, but the SlideIT not being activated I cannot enter it. So I thought to just enable trial mode but when the app tries to connect to the server it errors out. And I can't get back to the input selection box! help!
Tried to un install using astro but SlideIT doesn't show in list of apps. Only shows in app brain but un install failed. If only I could clear SlideITs cache!

Swiftkey free today on Amazon Appstore

As title says, just a heads up to get a great kb for our NC for free today only on amazon appstore
(if you get it and want to thank me you can by sending me the apk since the appstore doesn't work in Canada!!! (arggh)
Just downloaded and testing now. Had been going between the Gingerbread and Thumb Keyboards on Froyo, but Swift does seem to be more accurate so far. Think this might be my goto keyboard.
HOWEVER, the stupid Swiftkey icon pops up on the notification bar. It won't go away-- any way to get rid of this?
The free Swiftkey app from the Amazon AppStore doesn't seem to be a tablet version. It also seems to suffer from the white on white problem.
if someone can send me ?
I would like to try it.
The tablet version is in beta so i imagine once out of beta this can update to it
Not able to see predictive words
I installed on my rooted Nook and it doesn't have the same capability as it does on my phone.
The thing that makes this keyboard so nice are the predictive words above the keyboard. The predictive words aren't showing like they do on my phone.
Are others seeing the same thing?

Canadoc, there's no point sending the apk to you. amazon is drm'ing their apps, so it is locked unless on the same registered device and linked to the amazon account used to download it. i've alredy experienced this fate several times, using the family account to start with, then switching to my private account. have done it several times, with both free and paid apps. the apks are there, but they keep giving errors like "you are not the owner of this apk". perhaps i just need to delete the amazon appstore after the download?
I use it both on my phone and NC. Great keyboard!

Using root explorer I made a copy of

and pasted it in system/apps
then rebooted
After that, choose it as your keyboard either in NookColor Tools
or longpress a text field and pick input then choose Swiftkey

Clearly I am a complete and total moron. I have just spent an hour with three different root file system apps trying to make this work. I cannot do it. The file simply will not copy to the system/app folder no matter what I try. I can copy it to every other folder it seems, except that one.
Root explorer - can't mount the system folder at r/w. I press the button at the top, but nothing happens. The system remains r/o.
SUFBS - Mounts the system folder as r/w. I can create new folders and files in the system folder with no problems. Can't copy the folder from data/data or anywhere else.
Super Manager (hey it was free and I was desperate) - same deal as SUFBS except it did copy the file finally. Gave me an error that I was out of space. I don't see it listed as an APK. I'm clearly f***ing up something ridiculously simple.
WTF am I missing here?
ok gotta resurrect this one.
i paid for the tablet version recently from the android market and it doesnt install on my rooted NC - i rooted my NC using Manual Nooter.
i also cant seem to locate the apk file. anyone know where the apk file is installed once the app is downloaded from the market?

Change Keyboard

I love my new Nook Tablet after sideloading all of my favorite apps...the only thing that I haven't had success with is changing to a third party keyboard. I've downloaded the Thumb Keyboard from Amazon, installed it and see it running, I just can't activate it in the Nook settings. Anyone else have success with this?
I have had no success either. I tried swiftkey and, after downloading the language files, once I try to enable it just force closes. It seems the settings menu has completely removed the option to chose which keyboard you want.
Although (and this may be a long shot), I have an idea. I cant test it right now as my nook is dead and I left the charger at work >.<. Anyway, here is my idea:
root the NT
using a root file manager go to /system/apps
locate the keyboard apk and copy the name. (I don't know if case matters but I would just copy it exactly as it appears)
rename the apk after copying the name to something like (keyboard).apk1
now locate the /data/app folder
locate your keyboard app of choice and rename it to whatever your default keyboard is named
move the file to /system/apps
reboot tablet and see if the keyboard you downloaded sticks.
If this doesn't work, that is why we just renamed the origonal apk. Basically, go back into your file manager app and delete the apk for the 3rd party keyboard then delete the 1 after the stock and reboot and your device should be fine.
This works just fine on my phone (I know it's a completely different animal). If nobody is willing to try it, I will today while I'm at work and post back if it works.

Bah, this method does not work. I didn't snap that my phone had swiftkey enabled already so the LatinIME.apk being renamed had no effect on the device functions. On the nook, I rooted it and then renamed LatinIME.apk to LatinIME.apk1...which means no more keyboard so I cant rename swiftkey. In my infinite wisdom I tried to master reset (using wipe/deregister device in settings). Apparently this does not completely revert to defaults but just wipes user data...so now I cannot login to my B&N account due to no keyboard!
So...DO NOT DO THIS! >.<
Alternatively...once you have root you can push the renamed swiftkey app (or whatever keyboard app) to /system/apps and that MIGHT work...All I know is, looks like I'm returning my device as I cannot do anything with it
Turn off the device. Hold down the N key and Power it back on to do a factory reset.

I actually figured that out just messing around trying to find a hard button reset...this doesn't work either. Apparently a factory reset only resets the factory settings but does not restore the rom to default itself...weird.
hmmm...does anyone know if there is a way to get to adb shell with the device off? or without being able to get into settings...yeah...long shot lol

Debugging gets disabled after each boot, so no ADB. I think you are screwed. Perhaps this is a sign that you need to go into a B&N and have them "fix" your tablet. When they pop the secret SD card into it, grab the tablet and RUN.
I found in an old Nook Color thread that the file is saved as com.beansoft.keyboardplus.zip in /data/app.
I had hoped to do this without having to root my NT...love to be able to sideload apps but just don't want to hassle with rooting it.
At this point I think I'll just be sticking to the stock keyboard since it sounds like you have to install the apk in /system/app for it to have a shot of working anyway.
i think kfmethod can work if android versions is same
I have not figured a way to change which keyboard is being used, but I was able to find a way to change to different themes of the B&N Stock Keyboard.
Here's how:
1) Download/Install Anycut from the Android Market
2) Open Anycut
3) Select New Shortcut
4) Select Activity
5) Scroll down until you see Android keyboard Debug settings, choose this
6) Go to your homescreen and click on the newly created shortcut
7) Select Keyboard Theme
8) Enjoy!
I'm rooted and I'm not sure if that changes things or not, perhaps someone can test it out for me?

Nook Tablet SIP Keyboard Switching without rooting
I too am desperate for my Nook Tablet SIP Keyboard to be switchable without rooting. I was previously using windows mobile where you have CTRL+x,c,v,b,u,i,e,y,z, etc -- i used it CONSTANTLY to undo, redo, and most importanly: being able to cut, copy, and paste info form fields.
This is driving me nuts that the standard SIP on a tablet doesn't have such basic features.
I purchased Thumb Board from Amazon (Amazon says it's compatible with Nook Tablet) but I can't execute it... bummer.
After using the hacker keyboard for a day, i found the keys a little too cramped for how fast i type. I ended up just changing the theme to stone and i like it. Im much more accurate with it as well.

I purchased Thumb Board from Amazon (Amazon says it's compatible with Nook Tablet) but I can't execute it... bummer.

Did you ever figure out a way to get thumb keyboard up and running? If not, I can probably help you out seeing as that is the keyboard I now use constantly.

I'm not rooted and still haven't found a way to use thumb keyboard...if you know of a way to enable this on a non-rooted NT I would love your help in setting it up! Thanks.

Email apk *to replace the system APK *Stock gingerbread

I got the email apk from gingerbread up and running on the nook tablet *will update with screenshot. I figured I would try and it worked so no more *****ing about the stock email app being crap. You can now fix it.
How to install:
Download here
Push to SDcard
Move to system/app using root explorer *or free alternative.
change permissions to:
Code:
Read, Write
Read
Read
^ Just like that.
then reboot
and
Enjoy
Don't forget: Backup your stock email apk, just in case.
Does this replace the B&N app when using their launcher too? I'm getting very upset with it constantly re-downloading all of my email...
You need to reboot for it to take effect btw

I'm having an issue getting this to work. Do you have to push the apk to the sdcard, or can you copy/paste it?
Issues here as well. The app isn't showing up in the list. Reverting for now
I already said you need to reboot for it to show.
Rebooted twice. It would show up as Email or Mail, right? Followed all the instructions, permissions, etc.

I did so. I made sure that I followed your instructions. I'm having similar issues with changing out the keyboard, though that may be more related to the apk I downloaded.
Did you guys put it into system/app?
Yep. I used adb because i was already hooked up and working on stuff. Didn't look at logcat because i was working on a compile config.

Of course. After making the /system partition R/W with Root Explorer. Would have preferred to use my own r/w script for /system, but when I got rid of my Droid I think I deleted all of my Android editing/modifying files.

It worked just fine on my tablet and another persons tablet. Check completely through your app drawer for it it should be called "Email"
Got it up and going fairly effortlessly...
the mistake I was making?
I am using Go Launcher Ex...after reboot I looked at E and M for Email or Mail...well, it wasn't there (even though I was sorting alphabetically)
It turns out, it WAS there in my app drawer...it just went to the very last page of my app drawer and was listed after Widget Locker...obviously NOT in alphabetical order, haha
Maybe you guys were also having this problem?
Yep that was my issue as well. PEBKAC. Sorry for the mixup. Thanks for the app!

I found it exactly as described above.
My main issue was that I was initially trying to launch it using the stock nook home apps screen.

Yeah, exactly the same thing happened with me. Go Launcher doesn't always seem to auto-sort correctly.
Not sure if that's an error or feature of Go Launcher but it doesn't seem to happen all the time. Recently downloaded apps are placed at the end of the app draw. I like it cause I down load so many apps, I forget what I've downloaded.
Lately however, I've noticed that new apps appear in order with a little orange label in the upper right corner of the icon - I think it says new.
Awesome! Thanks, Indirect. This worked perfectly for me.
On a side note, this also fixed an issue with contacts. I was stuck with the abysmal stock contact list manager, because nothing else I installed would allow creation or editing of contacts. With the stock email app is in place, I can now use GO Contacts to create and edit contacts.
BTW: email addys open a new email, street addresses open in Google Maps, and phone numbers open chat in textPlus if you have these installed.
the download link is no longer work. Can you send me a new URL?
Thanks
Please ignore my last post. I found it at your other thread.
Thanks

[Q] Nook Tablet keyboard force close in settings

This probably isn't a big issue but it's getting on my nerves. When I go to settings and hit keyboard, a 'Sorry! The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.' I did "try" to root and unroot it. Anyone had this problem? Can anyone help??
Yeah, that's a common problem for everybody. Here's 2 ways you can change keyboards:
1.) Get Keyboard Manager from the Market. It can even let you choose different keyboards for portrait and landscape orientations.
2.) Go into The NT Hidden Settings app -> Acessibility Settings -> ignore the pop up -> input method
oh thank you so much. I had no idea it was a common problem. I searched for it here and on google. didn't find anything on it. but im relieved now that i know i'm not the only one. thanks.
I've downloaded and tried keyboard manager and downloaded several keyboards. None of the keyboards ever show up though. The only option I ever get in input is the default Android Keyboard.
I forgot to mention that you'll have to move the keyboard app into the /system/app folder of your device. Then reboot and you will have access to the different keyboards.
Also, there's a thread devoted to installing alternate keyboards in the Themes and Apps sub-forum. I would provide a link to the thread but I'm using my Tablet now and I have yet to flash CM7 with its copy/paste, haha.
Yep after moving the hackers keyboard to the right directory, it`s working great.

I am having trouble getting into the /system/app folder in my device. I've connected the NT to my PC, but cannot find the folder, and I've made it to show hidden folders.
My girlfriend got this Nook for her mother, and I'm really trying to get a good Japanese keyboard for her. I downloaded OpenWnn from the Market, but I can't find the APK file anywhere on the device either. I know I making some n00b mistakes! Please help me out!

You won't find it that way. Use Root Explorer or ES File Explorer on the device.

Yeah, this.
I recommend ES File Explorer, as it's free and easy to use. In the app, hit the Favorites tab and you should see the internal storage represented by just a slash ( / ).

Thank you, I had ES File explorer already installed. I found the system/app folder, but I don't know where to find my APK file (for OpenWnn) I downloaded from the marketplace. However, the Keyboard Manager I downloaded, is showing up the system/app folder already.
Thanks a lot you guys for helping this n00b.
Also, this is kind of unrelated and I'm sure there is a 100 page thread somewhere about this, but whenever I checkmark "Allow third party applications", it automatically unchecks itself when I go back.
Thanks,
Greg

Try /data/app - that's where market apps typically go.

Glad to hear you got it working. In case you were still wondering or for others who have the same question, the keyboard app you downloaded was probably in this location: /data/app. From there you'd just want to move the app into the /system/app folder. Then reboot and you should be good to go (don't worry if you keep getting a force close of the keyboard app before you reboot).
EDIT: ckevin, you're too quick, haha.

Moved the file to the system/folder.. and it finally showed up in the accessibility setting, but still getting an error that it stopped unexpectedly.
Has anyone got another keyboard with a foreign language to work? I've been searching the forums for hours, but I haven't found any successful way to do this.
It looks like some people got swype and possibly other keyboards to work with CM7 installed.. Thinking I should go that route, but it's still in Alpha. I REALLY need the japanese keyboard, or this tablet is somewhat useless. Thanks everyone for your help.
Nook Force Close trying to change Keyboard
I have ES File Explr, I have seen the folders noted in the previous replies. Unfortunately, I cannot find the keyboard apk at all. There is actually nothing in my /data/app folder. From what I can tell, most are in the /system/app folder ...except the keyboard one I need.
So, to get around this, I downloaded a keyboard apk to my PC and then dropped it into my Download folder on my Nook. From there I used ES File Explr to copy/paste it to system/app folder -- but it would not allow this. I tried to "Move To" and "Cut/Paste" as well as the aforementioned "Copy/Paste." None of these were allowed.
I am at a complete loss. I understand I need to move the new Keyboard apk to system/app folder, but I still cannot find where it is stored. It does indicate "Installed." I tried a search in ES File Expl (for the word Keyboard, as it is in the apk name - even trying *.*apk, which was of no use, of course).
This thread addressed everything I asked and seemed to answer same. And I will continue looking for add'l help elsewhere in the forum. But if anyone can help me, I would be sooo very appreciative. Thanks!
PS:
I have the Nook Tablet orig. released Winter of 2011/2012, I think (when they first came out as "official Nook Tablet" with the Jane Lynch commercials (at the time Best Buy didn't even know they existed when I went in to purchase one). I rooted it (because a week after I got it they pulled that auto update that screwed all of us). But, aside from the root, I am not a super user. Everything I've done has been with the help of the masterful XDA instructions.
