[Q] How To Unroot? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I unrooted my friends Vibrant using the SuperOneClick and it still has the Quick Boot on it. How do I remove it and does this still mean his device is rooted? He has the official 2.2 update if that makes a differnce I tried using this tutorial to do it
http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsung-Vibrant/How-Do-i-Root-my-2-2-Vibrant/m-p/710539
but I couldnt get step 9 to work nor could I properly find his internal sd card. so we decided to just unroot it now

I personally would odin to jfd
Root it (so much easier)
Install rom manager/cwr
Flash custom froyo rom
Be happy

How much easier is using odin vs One Click Root/UnRoot (Mac and PC)?
With One Click, simply download, make sure your phone is in USB Debug mode, click Root, which puts you into recovery, install update zip, install RM/CWR,flash custom rom and reboot, done.
Just sayin.

ODIN:
download files and ODIN to pc
Load odin
Put phone in download mode (both volume buttons)
Run the files via odin
Bam, phone is stock
Root:
download file
Place in sdcard/
Phone into recovery (both volume and power)
Select to install update.zip
Reboot
Bam, rooted
Recovery:
Download rom manager in market
Flash cwr in rom manager
Reboot into recovery from rom manager app
Select reinstall packages
Select to backup
bam, custom recovery and a system backup
Install custom rom:
Download rom
place in sdcard/
Reboot into recovery
Select install from sdcard
Flash rom
Reboot phone
Bam, custom rom

I think I'm going to use the one click since I have a Mac and I'm more comfortable using it over my folks PC . The One Click will work even though he had the Kies 2.2 update. If so then I'm ready to root it. He was wondering how to overclock it and get wireless tether. I have a Droid X so its way Easy for me but I know his phone is tricky

[Q] Vibrant - rooting - roming - lag fix

Okay so im new to this and i have been working all day on trying to get my vibrant modded a little .. My earlier thread shows that i had some trouble and finally got it back to its factory settings .
Now I have upgraded to 2.2 and i rooted it using super one click rooting because I cannot root with an update.zip because I get a signature verification failure. But I realized i need to do this anyways to run a rom even using rom manager ..
So i tried to install 3e recovery installer which is suppose to override this but for some reason it fails to install. It says checking for root: and it fails.
Someone seemed to have the same problem in a different thread and said they deleted some bloatware with terminal emulator but i used termaninal backup (or something like that) to delete some bloatwares but this still did not fix the problem for me.
What is my problem? And what lag fix can i use for my vibrant when i get all this to work?
Fastest way to obtain root :
1. is to flash stock JFD rom (use AIO tools.
2. flash Clockwork recovery through Rom manager (get it from market)
3. Flash any rooted rom (with Voodoo lagfix) through CWM.
And most important thing, if you don't know what you are doing with your phone don't do anything.

i thought you needed root to flash recovery from rom manager...
anyways, my method of rooting is to use the recovery 3e to 2e batch (dont wanna call it an install cause it doesnt install really) and then flash a root update.zip from the 2e recovery you just flashed.
what may be happening to your 3e 2e thing is that you might of forgotten to enable usb debugging... you do this by going in the menu>applications>development>usb debugging on
make sure the phone is plugged in to the computer and debug is on and run 3e to 2e...
then get ahold of a root update.zip and rename it update.zip, put it on the root of your internal sd card (\mnt\sdcard\) and go into recovery (power phone off, hold vol up and down buttons and then hold power button at the same time until you see the vibrant boot screen. when you get into recovery, hit reinstall packages.
sorry for the wall of text; hope this helps.

why not flash pentafives ed05 2.2 then root? is there a reason you want to stay on eclair? I believe superoneclick works on 2.1
its been a long time since ive done this, but dont you have to root, to flash clockwork recovery, to allow you to flash a custom rom? (in that order)

no thats old school...most roms here are prerooted now. u can simply odin powerwashed eh09 gingerbread and be rooted, debloated, and ready to roll. then go back to odin and flash cwm 2.5.x, so you can do nandroid backups and flash other roms like tsm 1.0. If you want aosp mtd roms such as miui,cm7, tsm pool party, all you need to do is odin cwm4 fixed for cm7, three finger boot into recovery, wipe data, cache, dalvik, and install mtd zip. Once it boots never use three finger recovery again. you can access recovery by long pressing the power button. pre rooting is a thing of the past and is only needed if your looking to stay on a stock rom to debloat, and use root apps such as wireless tether, root explorer, tibu, etc...
im trying to stay away from using a computer, can i just go to the market, dl rom manager, flash cwm, and flash my com rom?

nope, rom manager only works "ok" with mtd based roms...I highly suggest you use a computer and familiarize yourself with odin or heimdall. I don't think there is a root method out there that will work without a pc for the fascinate.
so then i NEED to be rooted, to flash cwm?
this is what im thinking
connect to pc, and use 1 click root, to root my 2.1 stock phone
dl rom manager from the market, and flash the cwm
install my customrom.zip (com rom)
all done?

[Q] NOTHING works right

got a vibrant
had 2.1 rooted
updated to 2.2 via kies
didnt like bloatware and swype version
couldnt root 2.2
downgraded to 2.1 stock and rooted
*not the same 2.1 i had before*
google apps seem out of date and they dont update in market
decided i want a gingerbread rom
cant get clockworkmod recovery flashed using rom manager
downloaded a custom bootloader (green android) and installed
now phone boots but will NOT go into recovery or download mode
trying to get to recovery; green android screen then stock "vibrant" screen loop all day
trying to get into download mode; black then plug in usb and the battery charging comes up and thats it
now i found clockwork file i can flash using odin or heimdall but cant because i got no download mode
what do i do? can i do anything?
phone isnt bricked just no option but normal boot to android
Your key combos changed when you flashed boot loaders. Volume up + power for download mode and volume down + power for recovery

thank you so much! is there a walk through with dl links to get clockworkmod recovery on my device without rom manager?
rom manager downloads it to my phone but doesnt flash.
also rom manager free is not in my market anymore.
another question, what is the most satble, fastest rom with the best features and looks cool?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
use option B, have your rom you want to flash on your sd card ready to go
Ok I have a cwm .tar file and I want an ics ROM.....should I just flash the .tar and use cwm to flash the ROM?
Or will that not work?

Watch this video if you want to flash ICS. It has everyting that you are doing right now. THe update.zip, the files you need and a walkthrough. You'll need to download some files to your internal though.
Thanks so much....I kept the same bootloader. Flashed cwm and ics 10.6
It's awesome!
I don't see any of the bugs people are talking about either

Easiest way to Root?

I am trying to root my Vibrant running froyo. I tried the update.zip and also superoneclick methods, none of them seem to work. I was wondering if there is any other way to root my phone without using ODIN.Thanks!
Pull the Clockwork zip from my signature and then also the Superuser zip too. Put the SU zip in a folder and the CWR zip on the root of your internal. Boot into recovery and hit Reinstall Packages. It will cycle through and boot back into stock-blue recovery. Hit Reinstall Packages again and the recovery will turn from blue to Green. Scroll down to Install from SD card and find the Superuser zip from earlier and flash it. Once done, reboot and you should have SU. Might have to update the binaries. If you do, go to market and download Update Fixer. Install and run it. It will fail. Force Close it and restart and run it. It will cycle through and you should be good to go.

So I put the Superuser zip on to the external SD? And do I need to downgrade to 2e from 3e for this to work?
If you're on 3e, you need to find the 3e_recovery_installer.zip or go back to 2...

You don't need to have CWR at all. It is just a good teaching tool for future. If all you want to do is Root, the just put the SU.zip on your internal card, boot into recovery and hit reinstall packages twice and you are rooted.

Exactly what I use to root, works like a charm and only takes a minute or two
You may have done something wrong if superoneclick didn't work. Did you put your phone in USB debugging? Also, if you install update.zip from recovery, that will work too.

Hey Guys,
I am new here and having the same problems not being able to root.
I'm also running a Vibrant 959 on Froyo 2.2.
So far I've tried the following:
-one click for t-mobile vibrant on mac
-superoneclick running an XP Machine w/framework 2.0, 3 & 4
-V4 app
Nothing has come to fruition for me. I've tried the soc method several different times and checked the threads about making sure usb ports are functioning and usb debugging is on. I've ran it with the SD card installed and w/out external SD installed.
With SOC it keeps telling me that my phone has been rooted but superuser doesn't show up. I even tried using an app called root check basic which tells me root access is not available.
I'm coming up dry as to why SOC works in the videos people post but I am not successful in running the same thing on my phone.
Any ideas?
Please disregard above post. I finally found the problem was i was running recovery 3e which was rejecting the signatures.
I installed the modified 3e in the link mentioned above and finally got the system recovery to re-install the update.zip folder.
Haven't tried superoneclick since the modified 3e was installed

Are these steps for rooting my S2 i777 correct?

A friend linked me superoneclick and CM9 to root my phone.
Basically, he said to:
1. Back up contacts
2. Boot into recovery,wipe data/factory reset
3. Use superoneclick to install drivers and root
4. Load CM9 zip into internal memory (onto the ~16 GB of internal my S2 has)
5. Boot into revoery
6. Install Zip
7.Reboot
I am a tad congfused though. do i connect my phone via USB, open superoneclick on my computer, and use it to load the CM9 zip onto my phone?
How do i install zip once im back in recovery?
thanks!

To get a custom recovery and be able to flash custom roms (cm obviously included), all u need to do is flash a kernel for our phone model as all our kernels have recovery built in. Just find a siyah.tar file (gokhanmoral has some on his site in .Tar format), download it to your computer, then find a rom you want to flash and download it to your phone. Make sure you have Odin installed on your computer, and the correct drivers installed for your phone. Also make sure usb debugging is turned on on the phone. Put the phone into download mode, open Odin on pc, plug phone into pc, open the pda link in Odin, select the siyah file, and flash that puppy. Then when done, disconnect from pc, reboot phone to your new recovery, and wipe data / factory reset. Then flash your rom!

Odin only works with Windows pc's, so on Mac you'll need to use Heimdall. Probably the Heimdall command line version is best. You can download the firmware of choice to your computer, and then transfer it to the phone over USB, or use dropbox and wifi, or something like that. You can download it directly to the phone if you prefer.
The guide referenced by Vpr2006 has instructions for using Heimdall as well as Odin. It give you the basics. In general you should 1) root 2) install custom kernel 3) use ClockworkMod Recovery to install your firmware of choice.

This approach to customizing your phone involves the following steps:
JANUARY 2013 ROOTING UPDATE: In mid December of 2012, Samsung released an over-the-air update for the SGH-I777UCLK3, taking the operating system to version 4.0.4. Around the same time, XDA developer Chainfire released an application called ExynosAbuse APK which can be used to root the SGH-I777 with SuperSU, without the need to use a PC. ExynosAbuse APK is the best, and probably the only practical method for rooting UCLK3 without flashing some other distribution. In addition, it seems that this application is a good way to root any phone running 4.x operating systems, and possibly phones running 2.x operating systems as well. Be aware, there are possible risks involved with using this application. Please thoroughly read and understand Chainfire's thread linked above before using his application.

My S2 Is currently on UCLK3 so i clicked the link there (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35512626).
I do not seem to see specific instructions as to how to go about this though, and I don't think it specifies how to install CM9 specifically.
Also, I have a mac, but I can access a PC if need be.
Thanks

If you don't feel comfortable using the ExynosAbuse Exploit by Chainfire to get root access on your existing firmware, then flash the [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root which is 4.0.3 ICS with root included.
Once you have root, use the instructions in that thread to install a custom kernel which contains ClockworkMod Recovery, preferably by installing Mobile Odin Lite or Mobile Odin Pro. I would suggest you use the "AJ Newkirk/Siyah v3.3.3d ICS" kernel, which is somewhat old but will only be on there long enough for you to flash your firmware of choice. Then enter recovery and flash your firmware, following the instructions in the OP of the firmware thread. As previously stated, you will need to use Heimdall on the Mac, or borrow a Windows PC and use Odin.
