I am trying to learn how to use the backup and restore fuction of the x-recovery. Here are my questions
1. Can I have multiple backups? Or is the backup only used for my primary rom?
2. Where is this backup stored on the phone?
3. Does it go back to default settings if I switch between several roms?

you can have as many backups as you like... just make sure you remember when as it names them by date and time.
It stores them on your sd card, it creates a folder called xrecovery, and within that a folder called backup. There you will find all of your backups.
In response to your last question, it will go back to EXACTLY what it was like when you made the xrec backup. It is an exact mirror image of what your phone is like at that time, settings, apps, everything..
...But the backups are kinda heavy, so just make sure that if you're gonna have multiple backups you have enough space in your SD card.
Xrecovery is magic, it restores your entire phone, data, settinge, contacts, all user info. as it was when you did the back up. Lets say you flash your phone with a stock SE ROM and then reinstall xrecovery, then you do a recovery of the backup you created, your phone will be restored to exactly how ot was before the flash. Im sorry of I am being confusing.

2. If u are on diff baseband version like 2.0.0.A.0.24 then updating to 2.1.A.0.435, will it work too?

How do you delete the backups that x-recovery make?, Cause i've made 3 trying to root my phone, and get onto the new Baseband/FW Versions, so if there heavy, I'd rather get rid of them and keep my latest one?

nooooo don't listen to them! If the roms have different basebands and don't support other basebands, you can't just change back and forth, you will have to use flashtool to flash the baseband back ( for example if you were using freex10 beta 4 with baseband .54, and gingerbread with .46).
Xrecovery CANNOT change a baseband, only the rom itself. Some roms require certain basebands in order to work as well.

Agreed.
1. Backup would be recovered but only compatible apps will work.
2. You update baseband using flash tool. xRecovery can't flash the baseband. Also for e.g. if you flash 2.2 firmware on 2.1.54 then its being reported that ppl can't switch back to 2.1 stock firmware

Hi Guys,
I'm looking to use a different ROM, however some of the base requirements in threads say to be on baseband 2.1.54 and to have dual touch drivers on the root. Here are a few of my questions:
1. Once I get to baseband 2.1.54, will it always remain at 2.1.54, unless I update it? Do I only have to flash the baseband once without having to do for each ROM I want to test with?
2. Same question for dual touch. Do I have to install dual touch each time I want to test with a different ROM, or is applying DT a one time process regardless of how many times I change ROMs?
3. I'm trying to create the folder structure for /Xrecovery/backup but I'm not able to add a new folder. My phone is rooted according to BusyBox and Titanium. I also went ahead and ran SuperOneClick again which showed as successful.
I tried using Astro to accomplish this as well as another application, forgot the name of it.... SuperFileManager??? i think.

Once you're in x recovery make a backup. This backup creates a folder on your sd card for your ex recovery backup. Once the backup is done it will be shown as a date which you can rename to your liking. I usually rename it to the ROM and or theme that I'm using

Thanks. I must have misinterpret how the guide was written because it said to use Astro to create the folder structure at the root level.
From your reply it sounds like Xrecovery will create this for me. Thanks for the info.

Once you are on any baseband it will not change unless you flash a new firmware with the flash tool. Dual touch already comes on the newest baseband and you can switch custom roms at your liking IF the roms all support the same baseband. You might as well stay on the newest firmware as it is becoming popular rapidly for most themes and custom roms.
Hey guys I couldn't find this answer anywhere. My question is when you back up your old 2.1.1 firmware and then flash a new rom like the froyo Tom can u just wipe your data then press restore in xrecovery to get your 2.1.1 firmware back

Yo I tested this out and all it did was put my 2.1 apps on group. It didn't flash back to 2.1? Did I do something? And when I used the flash tool to go back to 2.1 and restored group I was able to do that no problem. What's up with that?

When you boot into xrecovery go to backup & restore. Click on backup....of course while your already running 2.1.
Xrecovery will make a folder with the date and time....do not ever rename it.
The backup file can be found by going to sdcard/xrecovery/backup.
Download any new rom you want to test out. Flash it using xrecovery. After you use the rom and wanna go back to 2.1....reboot phone, boot into xrecovery, go to backup/restore....click on restore...and choose the appropiate file you wish to restore.
Thats all there is to it man....nothing more nothing less.

Well said, Patch!
Though I might add, you could go into the xRecovery backup folder using Root Explorer or some other file manager and rename the files so you can keep them straight easier rather than trying to remember dates and timestamps for when you backed up your phone.
I have them named like this:
2.1stock
2.1JIT
FreeX10
FreeX10XHC
FreeX10Slimer
and so on and so forth. I rename the new file every time after I make the backup so it's easier to keep track of these things. Just a suggestion anyway.
Ok. Because I had to use the flash tool to go to it. Maybe that's why it didn't work because I renamed the 2.1 backup when I had froyo. Well lol thanks again ill let u know how it goes

What you would do is make a backup of both roms in xrecovery, and then you would just restore whichever backup you wanted to use at that time!
So can I say -
1) Root my current 2.1 Eclair
2) Install XRecovery
3) Backup current 2.1 via XRecovery
4) Install Custom ROM 2.2
5) Backup 2.2 via XRecovery
Now you have two backups and you can switch between 2.1 and 2.2 via XRecovery Restore option. Is this correct?

Yes, you can switch between them.. But it's not really dual boot.. Wouldn't it be a bit time consuming to do the reinstall of the fw each time you want to switch?

If if and only if 5 minutes is time consuming. Cause that's seriously about how long it takes to switch.
And also to the OP. Remember that you want both of them set up exactly how you want them and don't change it because unless you make a new backup, what you add or change in between wont stay when you restore.

Guys I need some help hopefully you can clear some questions I got.
If I do a a full system wipe with xrecovery, dalvik cache and battery stats.
Is it going to delete a previously saved backup?
cause Im trying to install froyo on my x10 and already got a full system backup of my 2.1 using xrecovery but im not sure if I got the correct steps to do it.
What Im trying to do basically is get 2 backups to switch between em when needed.
when you do a backup its storred in sdcard under /sdcard/xrecovery(recovery)/backup/<date based name>
also wiping all stat and /data /cache will clear all your ROM related data from your phone.
So basically wich steps would be the correct ones to follow in order to get 2 backups so I can switch between when needed,without bricking my phone?

i don't know why you bother, its gonna take 5 min for each changeover, and assuming you'll make no progress in between each change, but then, no you don't need to wipe anything. Sigh, here are the steps: Just back up and then install, then back up that one, and then restore which ever you need. Also, just to make sure, your backups are located under sdcard/xrecovery/backup . So you don't screw up the md5 check, if your gonna rename it, don't put any spaces.

it is not another app you need, but just look a little more at the app list in titanium. depending on the language of your phone, the name might vary, but on a stock rom with english language os the entry you are looking for is:
"[sms/mms/apn]..."
of course sms app was just a hint and not the precise name.
also, this app is capable of backing up everything else you need, like pointed out, it is the simplest and most complete app for backups in preparation of changing roms.

i found "[SMS/MMs/APN]Dialer Storage 2.3.6" at "Backup all system data" via Titanium backup...

Had a very bad experience when i upgrade rooted GB to stock ICS using wifi (w/o pc connection). During the 1 week of using ICS, my s2 got tons of issues, ie, no app works properly, battery drain faster, consum more ram etc.. worst, could not root! Eventually brought to samsung svc ctr to restore a brand new GB.. root the GB again & working well till now..
However i really want to explore the latest JB roms, in case of the flashed rom got any issues, i want to know how to restore to GB (backuped using 'CWM app') using CWM restore or anything else?
Which likes using Ghost to backup/restore a setup windows sys..

1. Try to backup gb and then install ics stock rom on your phone with odin, you can find the guide on the forums somewhere (because there is no support for running gb and jb on the phone because of non kernel support for the both),
2. After you get your phone booting up root it with siyah kerneb by flashing it frue odin like flashing the stock rom,
3. Now install jb (i recomend you the jelly bam version by igio, awesome rom )
4. Now that done if you want to go back to gb you have to install gb stock rom yust like in odin.
5. Root the gb and install cwm kernel and you can get back to your rom.

What a load of crap that other guy said.Just make a nand backup of your GB setup,then flash the JB rom/kernel.You can backup that if you want/or dont(if you dont youll lose option to restore JB).
I can alternate between GB/JB by just restoring nands anytime I want.

Nandroid Backup or nand backup - a Nandroid backup is essentially a complete snapshot of your phones operating system—application data, and all—that be restored via recovery. It’s always a good idea to keep a backup of a nice stable setup just in case of emergency so that u can restore the same using CWM recovery
so that it saves u all that time u need for dwnld'ng a firmware and flashing the same and setting up ur phone to its previous wrk'ng state, with all ur apps and its data
PS- u can use that CWM app (the App after rooting) to perform those actions
Eg.Im using XWKI4 with siyah v2.6.14 kernel.I go into cwm and make a nand backup.
I can then download say vanilla rootbox by bajee,and once everythings set up ok I then go into cwm again and make a nand of that.
2 minutes later I go into cwm and restore my GB backup and Im back on GB.
For your other question,I think the siyah GB kernel has cwm as an "app",but I dont think the vanilla rootbox kernel did.I changed the kernel to dorimanx but I went straight back to GB.
Anyway,I just use the 3 button combo to get into cwm.

Lol, man u find the 'backup and restore' option in the new recovery after installing the CWM app which brings u the same, there if u backup ur rom its called 'Nandroid backup' got it

Correct me if im wrong..
So as long as i already created a GB backup in my int sd card, & after which i flash a JB rom. If i want to switch back to GB, i just reboot to Recovery mode with up-home-power buttons & from there i can restore my previous GB (backup in int sd card). Is it correct?
In addition, regarding kernel..
I explored some rom & their steps of flashing, none mention about flashing kernel?
I know kernel is sth connecting hardware with OS (right?), then why flashing kernel is not included in the rom flashing steps? Is flashing another kernel necessary?
When flashing a kernel, must i connect to pc to do so, or simply copy kernel file into int sd card & flash it (using recovery mode?)?

Anyway you can chop and change compatible kernels whenever you like.....same with modems.
People try different kernels for performance/battery life so its not compulsory.
You can use odin/mobile odin or cwm for flashing.
And its best to backup your efs folder when your rooted also and keep a copy on your pc.

just download hkctool off play store and use that.
Used 'CWM app' to backup into ext sd card; restore also using 'CWM app' w/o any issues.
However, when i reboot to recovery mode, i cannot restore as indicating 'file not found'.
My question is: whether the backup file must be inside int sd card instead of ext sd card?

It doesnt matter where it is.The restore option in cwm looks at your external card,and the other restore options further down look at your internal card.

It doesnt matter where it is.The restore option in cwm looks at your external card,and the other restore options further down look at your internal card.

yet how come 'file not found' when i tried to restore in Recovery Mode? headache...
It might be in your internal and the cwm is looking for it in external or in other direction that is looking in external and the backup is in internal you can look wit the explorer or something. Look for the clockworksmod folder or something. Mine is in the external sdcard. Try to move whole folder in internal maybe.
