[HOWTO]The GPS chip is awesome when it works, how to get it working - Fascinate Android Development

So like everyone else, I have been having problems with the GPS on fascinate like other Galaxy S devices. However, on EB01 it works the best I have seen it work.
From a few other suggestions that I have gathered from these forums and my testing, here are the results of my testing. I compared the Fascinate against Motorola Droid that I have laying around running CM GB nightly 40.
Test settings
Wifi, 3G radios were OFF to measure pure GPS performance. GPS Test app was left running for 10 minutes with the phone screens on.
Fascinate - GPS turned on from settings menu, google location services on, VZW location services on
Droid OG - GPS turned on from settings menu, Use wifi networks ON.
Results after 10 mins
Fascinate - Satellites Used 7 or 8/10 - Accuracy 13.9 ft
Droid OG - Satellites Used 7/10 - Accuracy 39.4 ft
GPS turned off from settings on both phones. Phones turned off for 10 minutes. Put away in closet away from window (might be too extreme, but had to make sure they were away from a clear view of the sky). Phones started again. GPS' enabled from settings menu.
Fascinate like earlier is able to get a quicker fix from the satellites.
Phones left running for 10 mins. Similar results observed as above.
So the GPS chip in the Fascinate is more accurate when it works.
To get the GPS working, I have noticed that it needs to be turned on from the settings menu. Turning it on from notification bar doesn't work

I guess thats cool. Good thing I have wifi 24/7 when I get lost?

How is this a how-to?

I see the "GPS is good when it works" part, but not the "how to get it working" part. Unless the "how to" is "turn it on in the settings".

This thread is pathetic. If you want to express that you're getting good GPS results, post in General. This is not a how-to.

one would think, more people would step in development section looking for a mod for fixing GPS issues

But this isn't a mod. There is no "how to".

I see other How to's in here, but a mod can move it to general, if people want it there.

Thanks man.....I figured it out from your first post....turning it on in settings works for me vs notification menu. I just learned "HOW TO" get the gps working on my SF consistantly.....seems like the right place to post this.....I guess some folks on here have nothing better to do but police the posts on the forum and fling there sarcasim...must be bored...Hey...every little bit of info helps.....

Before EB01 it wasn't necessary to go into the Settings to turn on VZW location services to get a GPS lock- you only needed to enable it in the windowshade.
I've already seen many who needed this info. Its a justified post it just lacks info in the 'How-To' part.

I get a lock just fine turning it on just from the pull-down menu. Running Super Clean 2.4.

I still get horrible accuracy. "Accurate to 2100 meters" *sigh*

For some reason I can't get a lock with wifi off.. But with wifi + gps enabled, I get an accurate lock within seconds.

Well I, for one, appreciate the tip. I was always using the notification bar to turn GPS off & on.
THanks!

When I use the drop bar to activate and then start gmaps, it takes forever, or maybe never connects. Though if I use the drop bar and then an app called GPS Essentials and look at the satellites tab, it locks in a few seconds. Its seems to be dependent on the apps that are looking for a gps position. I know on my old Omnia, gps settings were in gmaps, maybe gmaps has bad settings for our phone?

this makes sense that it would be this way, when you turn on the gps in the settings menu, you have to agree to it's terms. not so much when you turn it on via the status bar.

agreed. this appears to be an EB01 bug. Once turned on in the settings turning it on/off will work from the notification bar for a while, until you reboot with the GPS off, then it doesn't work any more until you go to settings. I have the same problem w/ EB01, but not with DL09.

I finally get a lock, but it's lost within a few mins of using it.

Two quick notes:
1) If you are running SuperClean, the VZW location services setting does absolutely nothing. It is only used by Verizon apps (i.e. VZ Navigator) and Google Maps is not able to use the information obtained by VZW AGPS, so the entire service has been removed from the ROM.
2) The dropdown gps button is virtually worthless right now unless you leave google location services enabled all the time. There are multiple ways to turn on the GPS through the OS code, and the current implementation causes GPS lock to take nearly a minute longer (or never, if there is no AGPS data) than if you were to go into the Settings menu and turn it on. At some point, someone will probably mod the drop down to emulate the same method as the settings menu.
That being said, from inside my house, with all my AGPS data cleared, on a freshly cleaned and flashed phone, I can get a fix in less than 3 seconds, accurate to 20 meters without having location services turned on, using only standalone GPS data. With AGPS data, accuracy to 6 meters in 5-10 seconds. The trick is to turn it on from the Settings menu, not the dropdown.

LOL that's a good one but i've already tried it from the roof of a 52 floors building in downtown manhattan. and nothing if i tried to use the sprint telenav it tells me that the GPS signal is to low, to make sure is turned on by going to phone settings-->location settings-->Network-->GPS, that location doesnt exist on my phone. any suggestions.
Freezing cold up in there by the way!!!
I live in NYC too and was having this problem also....just put the phone in ur window with Google maps running...it took about 45mins before it calibrated and found a satellite the first time. But now it works very fast.
Also make sure under system ---> external GPS you have "GPS Program port" on Com4

I'm in NYC as well.. Chelsea area.
My XV6800 had the location setting (Start > Settings > Personal > Phone > Services > Location Setting) turned to 911 Only. I set it to Location On and GPSViewer started seeing satellites but could not get a fix. I performed a hard reset (Start > Settings > System > Clear Storage ) on the device and it got a fix in 35 seconds. Now I get a fix immediately.

the funny thing is that i hear people claiming that they have a 911 only option under location settings, i only have ON or OFF. anyways nothing is working i left it like for an hour almost drain out my battery. i havent got this GPS feature to work. any registry or someplace else to look for??
You need to download gpsinfo.exe, and run it, opening com4 at 9600. See if it shows you moving gps nmea data. If so, it's working, leave it be for awhile to get a fix. If not, you have a problem with your rom/phone/settings...

sounds like it is probably my hardware because i've tried with DCDs and unofficial Sprint rom also. i'll give a try with gpsinfo.exe with location settings on and off just in case. thanks guys, i'll post back with results.

Using GPSINFO.exe it shows me some red dots with numbers inside. that is when you start gpsinfo.exe and go to GPS INFO Tab. so what that means??
edit:it showed me some greens a couple of times.
alright so i installed gpsinfo.exe and the hardware itself seems to be working because it gives me red and green dots, but it doesnt seem to attach ot get a fix one, any suggestions?
So in the setup tab does it scroll data? if so your hardware is fine, leave it sit in a good area outdoors (or somewhere with a un-obstructed view of the sky) for about 10 minutes. It should get a fix (some of the circles in the other tab will turn blue). What are the signal levels you are getting in that tab?

ok... the setup tab does scroll data, then the gpsinfo tab shows me red and green dots with numbers inside the dots. also with bars that range from 13 to 33. 33 being the max i've seen but doesnt get a fix status.
GPS stopped locking altogether
Anybody elses GPS just stop working? Haven't been able to get any locks since yesterday even when out driving around. Only known change yesterday was installing HTC Home Plug and Customizer 0.8. Tried soft reset, manual IOTA, ##debug# and googlemaps. All no help. Any clues?

alright guy so just a little update, my GPS works fine but it takes like 20 to 30 minutes every time i close googlemaps or any other program that uses the GPS hardware, i have to prime it using gpsinfo.exe first like for 30 minutes and then will work.
Thanks to all you guys who helped me in this.

Alltel Touch Pro and GPS - are there issues?

Hey guys,
Can you tell me if there is an "issue" with the GPS on the Alltel Touch Pro phones? These are fairly new phones and have only been out for a couple weeks so there may not be a lot of info available but it sure seems to me there are some issues here.
I'm on my 3rd phone. First phone was probably OK but since it was new and nobody in the area was familiar with it, everyone thought the speakerphone speaker was defective... turns out it just sucks but that's in a different thread. On the 2nd phone we noticed at the Alltel store the signal kept dropping out completely and then coming back. Also I dropped a call, looked at the phone and it showed no bars in a very good signal reception area. That coupled with I couldn't get the GPS to reliably work, Alltel swapped out the phone again for me thinking the GPS was defective. Well, third one might be worse!!!???
I have verified I have the 911 location settings turned ON.
I have run QuickGPS and downloaded the data.
On the 2nd phone after several days of trying it off and on and having zero success I decided to get the $9.99 monthly Alltel app. It did indicate a weak signal but eventually picked up my location. Hmm??? I then went into Google Maps and it too was seeing around 10 satellites. Why could I not get it to see any satellites for days then as soon as I paid for the monthly Alltel app it "kinda" worked??? I say "kinda" because after that being able to lock onto satellites even in an open field was very iffy. So, I took the Alltel GPS app off the phone and did a hard reset because I still couldn't consistently get any satellites. After the hard reset I tried again with Google Maps and nothing. I then downloaded GPS Test and it immediately found several satellites??? I then started up Google Maps and then it immediately started working too?!? During all this I installed TomTom Navigator 5 (own that so thought I'd try it) and it too was "iffy" if it would find any satellites but it did connect so long as I had the GPS Test program running in the background. I could live with that but even with the GPS Test program running in the background on the 2nd phone it wasn't at all consistent even outside in an open field. What I find odd though is that the GPS seems to "stick" and the GPS Test program was "unsticking" the locked up GPS... but not reliably.
Now for the 3rd phone. Get the 3rd phone this morning and immediately download Google Maps, turn on location settings, and do the Quick GPS. Do a soft reset and try out Google Maps in a parking lot. NOTHING again after over 10 minutes. CRAP! Downloaded GPS Test and now on this phone I'm only getting "GPS starting up" with one yellow bar. I can't even get GPS Test to work now but it finds the GPS and acts like it is trying to lock on to satellites. On both phones it was defaulting to 9600 baud. Seemed to not make a difference if I select 9600 or 4800... when it works it works and when it doesn't it doesn't.
This is very frustrating. It is not like the programs don't work because I've got them all to work but only sporadically. Is Alltel doing "something" to this phone and the GPS like "half assed" locking it out??? I don't know what else it could be. Could I have got two bad phones in a row? I've read were other Alltel users just download Google Maps and, bingo, works immediately for them.
Any ideas as to what I might be able to try would be greatly appreciated. I love some of the features on the phone but some of the basic items that should work (speakerphone, GPS) on an expensive phone like this don't work worth a darn
Thanks!!!
Drop the Alltel Nav plan...you don't need it. All it did was set your GPS settings to work, which you can do in the settings. Set GPS Hardware Port GPS and GPS Program Port both to none. Set Baud at 4800 and allow automatic managment. Soft Reset just in case and you should be good to go!

I only had the Alltel Nav plan for a couple of days... only got it for troubleshooting.
I had tried your settings before and both Google Maps and GPS Test could not even find the GPS. I just tried again and same results... GPS just keeps scanning for the GPS and can never find it. You have an Alltel phone?
The setting that you recommend me changing away from the default setting is the GPS Program Port... if that is set to NONE, the programs can't even find the GPS. When I change it back to COM4, the GPS is found but GPS Test sits at "GPS Starting Up" with either no satellites found or just one most of the time. I did the other day get it to work even on this new phone but then yesterday tried again for 20 minutes sitting still outside and the best I got GPS Test to show was 4 satellites... not even enough to get past the "starting up" message.
It seems like it is defective again but, man, TWO phones in a row with a bad GPS?????
So last night after replying to this thread, I was messing around with the new google maps. This morning...NOTHING works with my GPS. Perhaps the download of alltel nav (although canceled) activated the GPS on my phone for a specified time and now the sub ended. I was sold on this phone by Alltel reps because the GPS was not locked to an app.

Well, after screwing around yesterday like I did, I decided to just let it set in my garage (with many sky lights) this morning for a few hours with the GPS Test program running and looking for satellites. NOTHING. Did a soft reset, went outside, started up the GPS Test program and within 5 seconds was locked on to 10 satellites!?!?! I could swear I've done soft resets before and it did no good. Will try a soft reset again if it quits working on me. Also, I'm inside the house now in a room with ZERO windows and it is still seeing 7 satellites. I suspect there is an issue with GPS on this phone but because it seems very "flaky" I'd think a software update may be able to fix it... hope so anyway!
You might want to try a soft reset and see if that works for ya?
I also talked to a smart phone expert guy and he said it doesn't hurt to do the Quick GPS DAILY. He has found that on many phones running a program like this daily helps the phone to connect much quicker. FWIW, I didn't run it today and after the reset it connected in seconds. LOL
Ok, so I tried running Quick GPS and I get an error "Connection Failed". Perhaps this is somehow related to the GPS issue? I will keep trying throughout the day.

I only ever got that when my 911 location setting was turned OFF when I first got the phone. Turned that on and it worked no problem. Also, of course, you have to be able to get your data connection established. With a data connection and your location settings ON, I don't know why you'd have a problem.
GPS no worky right for me......
Finally someone with a thread for this issue! I too am having the exact same problem. The GPS is very "flaky" at best.... I have had it work sporadically at best in the car and will drop it for no reason and the pick it right back up and then go out for good. I dont really understand what to do, it is all quite a mystery. I have manipulated the settings back and forth trying diffent things to no avail. I hope there is an update soon that straightens this out. It annoys me becasue my old titan got signal in about 10 seconds, 10 satellites, indoors, in any part of my house.... just a bit frustrating. Hopefully we get a fix soon.
Thanks for any advice on this!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
This was driving me nuts! Now not only does quickGPS work, so does google maps I remember now changing that setting last night. Who knew?

After messing with this a bit more, I think there is definitely an issue with the Alltel version of this phone and the GPS. It seems that if I can't get it to work, it WILL work after I do a soft reset. What triggers the "need" to do a soft reset I have not yet figured out. But, I do know that I saw a friend who just got a Sprint HTC Touch Pro and had no idea about the GPS. I downloaded Google Maps on their phone and in less than 5 seconds the GPS was working like a charm.
Looks like the Alltel GPS works but is very sporadic at best and, for whatever reason, requires a soft reset damn near each time you want to use it. Hoping for a real "fix" for this soon!
and how do i change the 911 location settings
The 911 settings are located in the settings for the phone. START->SETTINGS->PHONE then click the Services tab and it is under the Location Setting.

Ok here is something that may be contributing to my problem. So i have double and triple checked the my location check and looked at the option which has always read "on". the strange thin is that the icon on the phone dialer screen shows my location feature is set to off. I have gone back to check the location setting and verified it was on. So i selected off then back on and then the icon reflected it was "on". I have tried soft resets after doing this and it goes right back to the way it was before I force it on. I am now hinking this is what is contributing to the flaky response of the gps. just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.....

Which icon are you talking about? I looked through the online pdf manual and could find no icon that indicated this setting was on or off
Also, while a soft reset sometimes works for this, it doesn't all the time. What has saved me time in this, though, is that I've learned that if it doesn't connect in under a minute, it ain't going to. Mine either works pretty much right away or doesn't work at all. It does seem to help to start up GPS Test first but that doesn't always work either.
After reading a bit more about this on other forums, it doesn't look to be related specifically to the Alltel version like I originally assumed. A number of people with other carriers are also experiencing "flaky" operation of the HTC Touch Pro GPS. The very sad part about this is that, apparently, HTC refuses to acknowledge a problem exists.
Would be nice to know if this is a software/driver issue or hardware issue. If a hardware issue then I'll be stuck using an external receiver most likely. Software, I can hold out hope that somebody will get it figured out!
the icon i am referring to is on you phone dialer. it is a circle that resembles a set of crosshairs. when the location feature is on, you will see the crosshairs. when the setting is off the crosshairs have a diagonal line through them. i am using my phone to send this so i cant attach any pictures right now. the icon is right next to the back arrow at the top of the dialer where the number you dial is shown.
update... spent 30 minutes with alltel smartphone support and they had no solution other than saying they would send this to the group that reports issues to htc to work on a solution. they did offer me to return it but i like this phone too much. i am
sure we will figure it out soon enough.

Ahh... I see that now and amazingly enough, mine has a line through it. I'll check that next time I can get the GPS to work and see if it changes.
Like you, I really like the phone but it greatly aggravates me that something so expensive doesn't work, as designed, out of the box.
I have had 3 alltel TP phones and all of them once 911 and location was set to on and quick gps was run once then they always got instant locks of 10 satellites. On my mogul the best i would ever get would be 4-6 satellites. Google & Live search use the intermediate driver with default settings with no lag and Iguidance (which is the best voiceprompt gps software) works with no lag when using Franson GPS gate as a virtual com port for the GPS driver.

If you go to your phone dialer, is there a "line" through the crosshair/circle icon?
I haven't been able to get a lock for couple days now. Bummer. I'm going to call Alltel tech support again and see what they say.
Ok, after not even beeing able to get more than a couple satellites being shown in GPS Test which means nothing more than a GPS Starting message, I decided to call tech support to see if they had documented any other issues with the phone since I last contacted them. I was told there are NO known issues with the Touch Pro (not even the problem with the speakerphone or the previously reported GPS issues).
After talking with tech support and they guy telling me that they get a number of calls for "other" GPS software programs but not too many for the Alltel Navagation program that they offer, he told me he can't help me with the other programs and I should contact their vendors. I tried to explain to him that one was a simple GPS Test program and the other was Google Maps but he kept saying that they don't really have problems with "their" GPS subscription program.
Being basically fed up and figuring it was worth the $10 to continue to troubleshoot this problem, I downloaded the Alltel Navagation program again. And guess what... IT WORKED. Guess what else... when I had the Alltel Navagation program working, GPS Test and Google Maps work fine too and I'm even inside a large building right now!!!
Does anybody have any "inside" on what is going on here? I know a number of Alltel people say the GPS on their Touch Pro works just fine using something like Google Maps. On mine, it "sometimes" works. I find it VERY odd that on my last Touch Pro phone I NEVER got even a single satellite to show until I downloaded the Alltel pay program. Now, with this phone, after struggling with it a bit I can "sometimes" get it to work but haven't been able to for a couple days, even after numerous soft resets but now, immediately after activating and running the Alltel program, my GPS starting working just peachy and even inside a large building!?!? I've got a full 5 bars in the Alltel GPS program inside. WHAT GIVES???
I'm going to pay for this Alltel program for a few days and see if I can consistently get a lock. If so, I'd sure like to know why the phone's GPS magically gets "better" so long as you pay for their service

I am using the regular windows dialer and yes there is a line through the circle/crosshair.
I just went outside and launched Gpsgate/Iguidance and had 10 sattelites instantly, it has been at least a week since I have drove and used the GPS, but I use it all the time with no problems or lag. Inside I almost instantly get 6-7 sats. using Google maps or livesearch without GPS gate, only the MS intermediate driver I get instant locks as well. I ran quick GPS once about a month ago on this unit.

[Q] EB01 - My GPS isn't working, it won't lock on at all.

I tried that, didn't seem to do anything.
Did you try removing the battery? Do that, and leave it out for about 1 minute. Let it reboot and see what happens.

Mine did that today. I rebooted and I was able to get immediate GPS lock after that.

Wow i think you are right, i never have vzw location services on but i turned it on and wallah... Ill keep testing it out to make sure.. Oh and the building im testing it in currently might as well be a bomb shelter because its a concrete and steel building, so i would say thats pretty good..

That's what did it for me. It seems stand alone GPS by itself doesn't cut it anymore.

That did the trick for me as well.
I had GPS issues with EB01 too - I narrowed it down to: if I rebooted with GPS turned OFF it would never get a GPS signal if I turned on via the notification bar. If I went into Settings-->Location & Security and checked "standalone GPS services" and accepted the warning GPS then worked great, locked immediately. But if I turned it off and rebooted again the same issue would occur. I tested this with SC 2.1, SC 2.2, and the stock EB01 ROM. Same behavior every time.
It also seemed like if the phone sat overnight (no reboot) and the GPS was off it would then not see any sats until I went into Loc&Sec again and checked the box there, but I didn't do extensive testing on that.
I never keep my GPS on unless I need it, so this was a deal breaker for me, back to DL09 until the next Froyo build comes out.

That sounds more like a confusion from the DL09 to EB01. Did you wipe your data?
yes, wiped data, cache, and dalvik cache twice each before installing each ROM I tested. Consistent across all three.
Im seeing a decrease after installing the voodoo kernel for eb01. I turned on all 3 gps providers and rebooted and it was a little better. Im just gonna give it time to work itself out.

Thanks for your response. I recently rooted and went to EB01 SC2.2 and have been experiencing GPS issues, and started to try to figure out what makes it glitch so I can have some consistency. Have you found out anything new, or just waiting for next update?
I've noticed that I can only get a gps lock with vzw and goggle location services turned on along with the standalone gps. After rebooting, I have to go into the location settings screen and manually turn on the standalone gps if it was off already (or click it off and then on again). After that my GPS works pretty well.
What I have noticed is now all of a sudden Google Navigation will occasionally say "GPS Signal Lost" while I'm driving which never seemed to happen before prior to DL30/EB01. If I open GPS Status immediately after I hear that, half the time it's still connected to several satellites so I don't really know what the issue is there.

No, I gave up on EB01 until the next formal update/leak is released. Between that GPS issue and the battery life seeming significantly worse in my SHORT trial of EB01 I decided to go back to DL09 and wait.

Interesting, thanks for confirming that I'm not the only one who has had this same issue. Most people have just dismissed what I've reported without trying it saying "EB01 is the b3st w1nnar why do you turn off your gps that's st00pid".

Its the unfortunate way AGPS works. You can download GPS status & toolbox from the market. This will (upon startup) connect and download the most recent orbital GPS data providing a fast lock.

Two quick notes:
1) If you are running SuperClean, the VZW location services setting does absolutely nothing. It is only used by Verizon apps (i.e. VZ Navigator). Google Maps is not able to use the information obtained by VZW AGPS. The entire service has been removed from the ROM.
2) The dropdown gps button is virtually worthless right now unless you leave google location services enabled all the time. There are multiple ways to turn on the GPS through the OS code, and the current implementation causes GPS lock to take nearly a minute longer than if you were to go into the Settings menu and turn it on.
The trick is to turn it on from the Settings menu, not the dropdown.

GPS FIX ?? What is consensus?.

i just got my Fascinate and having the gps issues of nock locking in. I am seeing a few fixes but very spotty as to wether they are really working or not. anything definate? why was this not fixed in the FROYO update if it was a known issue?
do you have google location services and VZ location turned on?
having those on makes a difference in my ability to lock on quickly.
also, get GPS status from market.. handy tool to download Adata and see how many sats you have connected
I seem to have the same thing. It takes forever or doesnt lock on without both Google & VZW Servies enabled for my GPS.
But once they are both on as well as the stand alone gps it locks on very quickly.
update

once i got outside it seems to be good. i ran gps status and it found 8 sats and locked on all 8. but i have question as to when gps is actually running, as it shows in the notification area. i will post a bew thread on this now.
I have been using GPS Status for a few months, but it stopped working for me after Froyo. Just downloaded one called "GPS optimisation" from the market, and it worked like a charm. I'll keep using it until it stops working for me.
I cant ever get gps to lock in by itself aswell. I just leave google services on and gps/verizon off... navigation/google maps locks in instantly.
Edit.
Just installed gps booster, now gps locks in by itself and is alot more accurate...Yay lol!!
Also Fwiw I tried "gps fix app" and "gps optimization", neither one worked.

NICE . GPS Booster got me an instant lock as well . Thanks so much for that . I have never had my gps work as it should until now .
Don't know if is just luck or maybe the area I'm in. I'm running 1.3 with the ED01 modem and use only GPS, Google location and VZW settings unchecked and have no GPS issues.
I did originally use EC01 with CommRom and the GPS didn't work as well as the ED01 does on my device.
I must be in the minority because from day one I've never had an issue with my gps. I usually open Google Maps, then activate my gps, and without fail it locks on in about 5 seconds and shows my position correctly on the map. I do have the Vzw & Google location enabled also. I did a comparison with a tomtom gps I have, and my phone locked on way faster than the tomtom.

ive been only been able to get a lock if i turn off both vzw and google services and only leave on standalone gps. if i have either of the other two on as well, i cant get a lock.
did gps booster give you an instant locck with google or verizon services on as well?

Help! GPS Issues!

My GPS seems to always lose signal... I can not use it reliably for Navigation at all!! It worked fine about a week ago and suddenly the last few days it has been unusable! I have cleared all cache from Maps as well as unchecked GPS from using cell towers undersettings then reenabling it. Got it to find my location for a second then loses it as i start driving again! Any suggestions with what else i can do?
Thanks

Nothing.. Just the normal browsing android market downloaded some apps.. Speaktoit Assistant.. forgot the rest...
I just did this and it seems to have worked ( at least for the meantime )
If you would like to speed up the GPS lock and connection time on the Galaxy SII...
Try this...
Settings > Location and security > ensure the the 3 boxes under My location are ticked.
Now download and install, free from the Market, GPS Status.
Remove the sim card from your phone and reboot it.
Open GPS Status (preferably outdoors with a clear view of the sky) and select Menu > Tools > Manage A-GPS state > Reset
Now select Menu > Tools > Manage A-GPS state > Download
Now just leave it for as long as it takes to get a solid lock on at least 6 Sat's (preferably more... 9->11 would be good). This can take 20 min's or more but be patient,
When you have achieved this then select GPS Status Menu > Settings > GPS & Sensors > Auto-download AGPS data > choose how often you would like the data to be updated (1 hour -> 3 days... I have mine set for 6 hours) > tick the 3 boxes (GPS required/Lock to GPS speed/Filter the GPS speed, if required) and choose your Sensor filtering.
Now power off your phone and replace Sim card and reboot.
N.B. Please ensure you have no Task Managers or anything that will close or interfere with this app.
Once rebooted you should find an improvement in accuracy and speed of your GPS.
Good tips that seem to work, but i have found GPS status to be a battery drainers in past phones. Personally my GPS is amazing and works better than any other phone I've had to date.

Actually, it's best to leave "Use sensor aiding" turned off. It's mostly meant for pedestrian use and requires that the phone be held level and pointed in the direction of travel. What it really does is turn off gps momentarily when it detects that the unit is stationary, which is more likely to hurt rather than help mobile tracking especially in vehicular use. It's mostly meant to help conserve battery power, and it's not much help even when it is working right.
Now download and install, free from the Market, GPS Status.
Remove the sim card from your phone and reboot it.

GPS status is my fave method of testing, but the feature for managing AGPS state doesn't seem to work right on these phones. In fact, if you choose delete AGPS data you can still get a fast fix indoors, which would be impossible if the AGPS data had actually been deleted. The "AGPS data downloaded" popup is just wrong.
What good would removing the SIM do?
The ASGS2 uses a SiRFStar IV gps module, one of the first examples of a new generation of smartphone GPS tech. It actually doesn't use AGPS the way previous technologies did by reaching out over the network and downloading AGPS data. Instead, it actually predicts ephemerides *locally* within the phone itself without needing to reach out to a server somewhere. The chip doesn't download AGPS data, but actually *creates* it. Very cool.

I've seen some weird things occasionally, like it being reported as using up to 40% of battery power. When I asked the app's author about it, he pointed out that if you click through on the item in the Battery Use display, it will show that it's used little or no CPU, which indicates that it's just a reporting bug, not an actual battery hog.

I'm using Speaktoit (eh... it's ok but not great yet) too with no GPS issues and would think that it's unlikely that it or any other app would cause GPS problems like this.
You might try just leaving it in a window for an hour or so with Navigator running. That would be enough time for even a standalone GPS unit to download complete almanac and ephemerides over the satellite signal. Maybe that will flush out all the GPS info. Unfortunately, I don't know of a good way to do this manually with these new chips.
You may also consider using a weather widget or such that uses GPS every few hours. This might help make sure GPS info stays refreshed if you're not using GPS much otherwise. Amazon App store has Fancy Widgets today for free.
I don't have any other good advice for you. If the above didn't work I'd be thinking about calling customer support and pursuing a warranty exchange, as GPS on these devices has been basically flawless for me esp. compared to Captivate.
thanks for the reply^^
I did did a clear cache in the Maps and now while in my house i seem to get a steady lock... Weird.. before it would lock then lose the signal then try to find my location again.. Not sure if there was some sort of error with the Cache that caused it to lose its location?
