Screen Colors Off? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone eleses yellows and Greens look off esp the yellows they seem to be very dull and off and almost orange

I agree, the market icon look Olive-colored on Atrix 4G

A lot of you were looking at the oversaturated SAMOLED screens for a long time... this is way more natural.

No qhd is just not as good as super amloed its facts.

Qhd is not a screen technology, its a resolution.
And the problem with the colors isn't that they're dull or unsaturated compared to a super amoled., that's to be expexted. The problem is that the colors are just wrong compared to just about any screen you want to compare it too, load up some websites on the phone and a well calibrated desktop monitor and you'll easily see the difference.

Compared to my captivate im really happy. That thing made skin tones green or orange.

It has to be reiterated. The oled display technology OVERsaturates the colors. As in, the colors are overly vibrant. The atrix will more accurately display colors.

Ok, saying this again. We (at least I) am not saying this in comparison to a samoled screen, the colors on a regular LCD will obviously never look like that, the colors on the amoled are completely wrong. However that doesn't mean the atrix has them right, just look at the screen compared to a well calibrated computer monitor.

Bumping this to get some attention on this issue.
I'm considering returning my Atrix because of how bad yellows and blues look, compared to OTHER LCDs, not compared to Super AMOLED screens.
I lined up my Captivate, Atrix, iPod Touch 4, and my wife's HTC Evo Shift and fired up Words with Friends on all of them. While it's clear that the Captivate is oversaturated, if you take that out of the equation, the Atrix's colors just look bad compared to the other two LCDs. The yellow tiles look "dirty" like they have a brown or greenish tint to them. The light blues in the tabs on the home screen of Words with Friends look like they have a greenish tint as well.
I've seen a lot of people say that they think it's one of the greatest displays ever, up there on par with the iPhone 4. If that's true, I really hope mine and other people seeing this just have defective models that can be exchanged.
I'm going into my AT&T store sometime tonight or tomorrow in hopes of putting two or more Atrices side by side to compare.
If anyone else seeing this problem could do the same, it would be very helpful. Especially as it seems likely that a random one pulled out in store could have the same defect.

Scott, I have my atrix boxed up ready to go back for the same issues. I went to the at&t store and looked at their 3 demo units, all of them looked the same.
If you go to a verizon store and play with a motorola droid x you'll see that its screen looks the same as well, it's just whatever panel maker motorola is using. People that are saying "It's the greatest screen evar, just as good as the iphone 4" are suffering new gadget love and can't see the flaws. It's not the worst screen ever but it is a definite step down from other manufacturers screens.

Just compared it to my iPhone 4 - yellow is way way way off. Can they even fix that? iPhone 4 seems to have the best screen by a long shot...

I would have to agree, the iphone4 has a pretty good display. It is a bit oversaturated, but does look pleasing to the eye. The iphone is also much smoother when using the pinch to zoom feature. With the Atrix having a dual core processor, I thought it would at least be on par with the iphone, but for some reason it's definitely not as smooth.
Oh well... just my 2 cents.

So I went in to an AT&T store last night and compared my Atrix with their demo unit.
The colors seem a little bit better, but interestingly, the demo unit's display didn't seem as bright as my Atrix, and it may have had slightly higher contrast.
I got one of the associates to look at it and agree that mine had a slight color cast to it. They said they would do a replacement for me if I came back with my paperwork from my online order, so I said I would do that today or Saturday.
I went straight home and compared my Atrix again to my wife's HTC Evo Shift. In doing that, I still felt like the color on her screen was significantly better than on mine, and in seemed better than I remembered the store's demo unit, as well.
So, I think I need to get my phone and her phone both in there, side by side with the demo unit, and see if I could live with the screen if it was exactly the same as the demo unit. I think probably yes, given the other major advantages of this phone (qHD resolution, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM), but as a graphic designer, bad colors are hard for me to take. And colors that are off in the way the Atrix's screen is off are a graver sin to me than oversaturating a la Super AMOLED.
Bottom line, I'm still on the fence. Has anyone else done any other tests?

Wait, so now the iPhone's IPS LCD is oversaturated too? Let's face it: Atrix is weak on colors -thanks to the RGBW PenTile display, where they tried to prolong its life by replacing some Blue tiles with White tiles -which makes colors pale.

It does look great with flesh tones though. Ill give it that.

People who complain about wrong colors have been looking at way oversaturated screens... as a semi advanced photographer, I can agree that the atrix screen is very very good color wise ...

Or they got an Atrix with a defective display, like me. Ony my Atrix, there's no getting around the fact that yellows look dirty and brown, and that certain shades of blue look greenish.

Screen/LCD Possible 2 different types of displays/qualities?

Hello, I just got a Thunderbolt through my work and I noticed the screen tends to wash out at angles. I had this same problem with my T-Mobile HTC Glacier or MT4G. It turned out to be 2 different vendors Sharp and Sony displays being used in this model. Once I got the good display it was a noticeable difference in the quality of the better display vs the bad one. Direct viewing from straight on is ok just as it was on the HTC Glacier. So I just wonder if anyone might have a good one and could post some pics to show.
Here is my original thread for the HTC Glacier with the Screen issues. There are some pictures and videos to compare the differences. I'm seeing some washing out at angles, especially around the clock digits where this problem is easily seen.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863679
Here are some pictures of mine with the Sharp screen. The noticeable areas are the clock widget black areas where they flip.
I'd say it's possible. I'm sure they have more than one place that manufactures the devices. There's been some variability in the build quality of the devices, so it's not too far fetched.
I don't have a camera other than my phone to take pictures, though. It looks like a really good display to me and doesn't "wash out"
You're right there are two displays. I went to the store last week to compare my phone with the display. Because I used to have the mytouch 4g and it took three tries to get one with a nice display. So I was surprise, when I saw the display model and colors were not as vibrant as mine. Man did I get Lucky, first try and it's a winner.
This is interesting. I ran a "dmesg |grep panel" and it returned sharp. I wonder if anyone would get Sony.
Mine is noticeably worse than my MT4G that had the good screen.

If you ask me, there is no doubt that there are two panels for this device. My first TBolt (which had several problems) had a really bad screen and I complained about it in another thread like this one. I had it exchanged and the new one is VERY much better. The first one was not crisp, colors were bad, looked blown out next to my DInc OLED. The replacement is crisp and the colors are beautiful.
I didn't get a chance to compare side-by-side, but everyone who had seen my first one, even my wife who is pretty oblivious about these things, would say that the new one is dramatically better.

Thanks, could some of you with good screens do a dmesg in terminal and report if you have a sharp or Sony panel. Make sure you restart then immediately run the terminal and dmesg command. Mine is a sharp so I'm thinking it is the bad display. Also if you can post some pictures of the screen from the side at extreme angles.
I will try to take some pictures of mine and post them tomorrow.
Before some of you start stating your opinions about looking at the screen at angles, yes there are situations where you are viewing at angles. Also it has been proven at least in the MT4G with the bad sharp display that the colors are not as vivid as with the sony screen even when looking straight on.
Mine is made in Taiwan. If you have a good one post where it was made please.
Mine returned Sharp.. and the screen is much better than my OG droid and my wife's fasicnate. I can read this post at ~160ish degrees, sooo.. no idea

Reading this board may not be enough to tell. I will be interested to see if anyone has a Sony screen to compare.
The point is, everything I do on this phone can be done at that angle, in relation to using the screen. Colors do not change, only the brightness, as to be expected from a gloss screen (and gloss screen protector).
I personally think that shows a quality screen.
Definitely not something to worry about.
FYI : I have my dpi set to 200 if that matters

Here are some more pictures which stand out more with green colors. You can really tell the difference as you tilt to angles and the deep green contrast is lost and it is hard to define the icons. The middle picture is taken from straight on and you can see the difference. I think on the Good Sony displays there will be no difference when looking from angles. I really suspect that the same display problems are following from HTC and the MT4G.

No I doubt it, we could never tell with the MT4G. The only one thing that seemed to hold true in the beginning was the ones made in China had a higher percentage of the good screens and more of the ones made in Taiwan had the more of the bad ones.
i have a sharp panel as well. i'm no connoisseur apparently because i think my screen looks just as good as my old incredible.
I have one made in taiwan and it is essentially flawless, only thing wrong with it is 2 very tiny dots of light leak which can only be seen in pitch black

Odd, mine is made in Taiwan, are all bolts produced there now?
dmesg says sharp panel, but I have no complaints about viewing angle or contrast after quite a bit of fiddling with it and trying to find something to whine about.
I have a sharp panel and it's better than the display model at my local store. I used to own a mytouch 4g, it took three tries to get a good display. And the good display was made in china. My TB is made in Taiwan.
This would explain why some claim to have gorilla glass style display that can't be scratched and others are getting scratches from car keys.
My first phone the digitizer went out after a drop out of the car (no glass broken or cosmetic issues just said touch panel- fail) and the second phone has light leakage not just at the bottom but at the corners too. There is a gap at the right corner for whatever to get into my phone.
I want to know if there is a different 'nicer' panel. It seems quite a few people are popping up with broken digitizers...
The phone I have is a Sharp lq043y1dx04
How do I know? Because I busted mine open to try and fix my broken digitizer. You can see pics and read the story in my post "Anyone want to see the inside of a thunderbolt?"
Still no replacements out there :-(
Digitizer or LCD
I have not taken this phone apart. But I did replace the digitizer on the HTC INC. The Digitizer is separate from the LCD in that phone. Does anyone know if the Digitizer is separate in the Thunderbolt? If so, it does not matter who the manufacturer of the LCD is.
I to agree with this thread that the digitizer on the Thunderrbolt is very easily scratched especially compared to the HTC INC.

For whoever cares, my thoughts on the pentile screen

After everyone saying that it's soooo different and no one can tell its even Pentile, I thought I would love this phone, especially with it's thinness!
Went to verizon today to check it out (they had one on display). Still obviously pentile. Granted, a LITTLE better than the bionic, but it's still no where as close to as crisp as ANY phone that doesnt sport the Pentile matrix, like the thunderbolt, iphone, even blackberry Torch.
I don't know about you all, but I CAN'T STAND IT. It's so ugly to me to have jagged looking edges and lines through you're screen. My old Blackberry Storm 1 did better than this.
I'm really hoping the pentile on the Galaxy Nexus is better than this, or else I'm just still going to be wishing I had something like the galaxy SII
Hey, thanks for your opinion, I am interested in what people who have actually seen the thing in person have to say. The stores near me dont have it on display yet so I appreciate the info!!
If u like this phone just buy it, forget abt the screen and battery, just buy and enjoy.
It'll be the same thing probably on the Nexus. It really isn't that big of a deal so don't worry about it.
Yeah it really isn't THAT big of a deal but I just don't understand what's so hard about using a little bit better of a screen. I think the nexus will at least make up for the screen with ics and the on screen buttons and NFC. Though much thicker :/. I can't wait to really feel how light this razr is once its out of the display clunky holder thing.
It felt reallllyyyy light even with that thing on there and the thinness is incredible. I sold my bionic a few weeks ago and I have been using a 4s, and I'm getting so sick of not having my 4g. This razr will be a nice change, though the screen definitely looks subpar. I just wish there was a phone on Verizon that I could show to apple fanboys and them not say that their retina display looks better. Because, fact of the matter is, it does look much better(the retina display).
It's almost sad to me that Motorola and Samsung and such brag about their screens being 720p and such when their pixel densities are still less than the retina display, and the pentile is still obvious(assuming the nexus is still the same).
I don't know, I'm just ranting.
The razr did feel very quick however, and the camera app worked VERY WELL. The shutter lag was very low! Much faster than the bionic and it reminded me of a galaxy nexus video displaying the no shutter lag. Though the pictures weren't what I was used to with the 4s, they still turned out pretty nice looking.

I know what you can show them! Show them the iphone 5 while they still have the 4s! Jk jk. On a serious note think about the screen sizes, 3.7 vs 4.3 and 4.65, they don't even compare. Yes it looks sharp and such, wait till they do a 4 + inch screen, and then if they can keep the same pixel density more power to them. But seriously I've been through 5 phones this year on Verizon alone: 1.) Thunderbolt 2.) Droid Charge 3.) Droid x2 4.) Droid 3 5.) Droid Bionic . To be honest the X2 screen was the worse out of them all, that phone was just utter garbage. The Droid 3 and Bionic screens although pentile, were still acceptable for day to day use and netflix. Seriously if I want breathtaking visuals I'll go home and watch something on my dual 30 inch setup.
Were you disgusted with the display on your Bionic? If you can't stomach the pentile display... There's always the HTC Rezound that you could go for. I will personally wait for the RAZR to come to my anxiously awaiting hands via fedex 11/11 by 10 am gg priority shipping. If the screen is that terrible but I like the speed/feel of the phone I'll probably stick with it. To me high quality build is a HUGE factor, I can't stand HTC/Samsung's cheap plastic build. In the end it's your own personal preferences, I'm not bothered at all by the sub pentile matrix.

OK ... this post is going to sound antagonistic but it REALLY isnt meant that way ....
are we putting too much emphasis on this Pentile issue ? I mean most of us are upgrading from phones that are a year or two old (in my case an original HTC Desire).
I assume (correct me if im wrong) that the RAZR screen (and the Nexus screen and Rezound screen - not coming to the UK) will blow my Desire screen out of the water !?
Seriously ... I have very good vision but am I genuinely going to spot Pentile without going right up to the screen and looking for it.
I think my Desire is Pentile isnt it ? and ive never considered that blocky or seen any halo effect and thats a much lower resolution !?!
Please dont take offence if you really do notice the difference but im just trying to get some perspective into this discussion .....

No offense taken at all! I am very attention to detail, and yes you can notice the pixelation to some level (more so on the droid x2 (the most) droid 3 bionic not enough to bother me). I can't personally say anything about the RAZR, but looking at the color saturation looks nice. To be honest I really don't care if it is pixelated even slightly. The OP is the one making the fit about the PenTile display. I don't agree with him, but he is entitled to his opinion, and I will respect that. In the end it's all about personal preference, I for one am okay with the PenTile technology. The main gripe I'd say besides the blocky/jagged text would be the discoloration, but the AMOLED on the RAZR seems to take care of that.
Edit: Derp iPhone screen 3.5 D:.

just trying to suggest that this is probably going to be a better display than what most of us 'currently' have and probably in the top 5 (?) displays out on the market (or due out imminently) ???
or am i wrong .... ?
construction ALONE is a good enough reason to get this.
The cheap 4$ plastic of the Sasmsungs doesn't justify even a 1080p display, it just looks and feels like 98' cheap gameboy.... Not to mention the SGS screen is one of the worst in the industry today with absolutely NO WHITES and a green hue all over the place.. It's just a very bad engineered screen to fit Samsung's cheap phone.

True ... construction is a biggy for me. i run a junior football squad (soccer for our American friends) and my phone is often used in the wind and rain around mud etc.
My Desire has stood up pretty well but (in my opinion) the Desire has been the last of the 'sturdy' HTC builds .... to be honest I really fancy a change from HTC too. Will I miss sense ? possibly, however my current 'build' is a Senseless ROM anyway.
I like the look of the RAZR, and need an SD slot (or at least 32gb - which seems to rule out the UK Nexus). Wavering, but the RAZR is still front runner ....

Yes it will be one of the "better' displays on the market for sure. Regardless of it having a PenTile matrix, it still has good color saturation and unmatched visibility outdoors. I will have my RAZR in another 2-3 days or so, and I will report back here with how the screen is.
I was disgusted by the screen because I wanted it to be leaps and bounds better than the bionic screen, and it wasn't. It was just slightly better.
You all will love you're phones I'm sure, I'm just a snob about the pentiles. For some reason I can't stand it. Especially after looking at the gsII screens. bleh.

Me too. But after playing with one for about 10 min the screen on the razr looks beautiful to me. And with the bionic right next to it, I see a huge difference. Thats just me though.
Sir, if you think the SGS-II screen is a better screen, then your statement regarding the Razr screen kinda loses some of it's validity because scientifically, the SGS-II screen is showing you FAKE colors, the white is really really dark, under ANY brightness setting, and the rest of the picture is GREEN in such high levels that it's an insult to any good set of eyes.
In the comparison pictures I have seen, the RAZR's panel, although similar, has MUCH better whites and less of a green hue.
If you meant that you liked the SMOOTHNESS of the SGS screen, in term of pixel arrangement, then maybe ! I'll see when I get one.
The way I see it, the IPHONE has the most advanced, natural display on the market today... Nothing comes close really.
BUT the overall package of the RAZR is what's appealing.
thank you for your thoughts.

I would MUCH rather have th SGSII screen than the Razr's. Like I said, the pentile is just horrible in my opinion. Maybe you're right about the greens and all. I'm just saying first impressions, when I picked up the phone, the pentile was noticeable. Make me look back at my iphone and be like, wtf is this?
This is what Gizmodo's review says about the screen:
"We ragged on the Bionic's screen pretty hard. The RAZR's is a lot better. It's not perfect, but it's better. The new Droid's screen is Super AMOLED Advanced. What does the "Advanced" mean? Seriously, nobody has any idea, which means it's probably just marketing speak. "Advanced" aside, its Super AMOLEDness delivers deep blacks and vivid, accurate colors. There's still some pixilation, though. In fact, it's almost as severe as the Bionic's, but with the increased saturation and straight-up deliciousness, it doesn't draw your attention quite as much. It's certainly not as sharp as the 720p display on the HTC Rezound or the iPhone 4S' Retina, but it certainly won't make your eyes bleed."
http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/11/mobile-monday-motorola-razr-review/
I gotta say I really don't care whether it is pentile or RGB, I just want to be able to view sites in desktop mode without having to zoom in, (sites like engadget), and still be able to CLEARLY read text beyond the like headlines. At this point, I have yet to see a pentile screen where I can do this...
I was disappointed when I got a Nexus S because I couldn't view pages as well as I used to on my much older Motorola Milestone (Droid 1). And the Atrix, even with its qHD display appeared to be a step backwards from the Milestone. This is one of the things I like to do to test out a new phone, and I have a feeling the RAZR will disappoint in this regard. Out of all of the phones I have checked out lately, the HTC Raider (Vivid in the US) appears to have the clearest rendering of websites in full desktop mode. Regardless, the RAZR's screen is still a step forward and I would really like to see it in person, but until then, threads like this and OP's opinion provide an interesting read.
android is choice ...
... i played with the razr for 10min and i just can say it`s a great device, pure black, nice reading ... pentile or not, cool phone.

why screen resolution and colors are so bad

I have a Photon and a Defy. Why Photon resolution is so bad? I can see the dots on screen...
Colors are so desaturated, specially yellow's...
I'm deeply disappointed with that...
Its the pentile hd display, yeah some colors show a little pixelation when you look closely, but ive always loved the screen and thought the colors were better displayed than the over-saturated colors in AOLED(did I spell that right?) Anyways, at firdt I thought the pixelation might bother me but It doesnt one bit cause its such a small difference for me atleast.. I love the color contrast though!

AMOLED close enough though lol. And I use to think the same thing, but I really started to like the screen. Yeah its a little pixelated, but bright and easy to see. Just don't try to pay so much attention to it, and it won't bother you as much. Also don't use your phone so close to your face like I used to do haha.

I had Defy, before Photon and I had the same problem with screen. But I must say, it's only a question of manner. Now I am satisfied with screen of Photon.
Pentile take getting used to, really wish they'd made it 720p so you can't notice but I like the display anyway

So, why did you buy it? I've had mine 9 months and spent an hour with it in a store to make sure the screen worked with my eyes.
Isn't it about 9 months too late to be whining about something nobody forced you to buy?

yes! I forgot to add that cause im ao use to it now, the screen is SO easy to see, with brightness turned off and in the sun, you can still read your screen! Yeah you should probably turn up the brightness but every other phone you cant see a thing in the sun with the brightness off, very good for the battery!

I've never noticed an issue with the display. Sure, I can see pixels if I look really close... and when quickly scrolling, it gets kinda blurry.
Still, I had the HTC Hero S (US Cellular's equivalent of you Sprint folks' HTC Evo Design 4G... but without the 4G) for six days, and my wife got the Electrify, and after seeing her screen, I traded. Hero S/Evo Design has the same number of pixels, but a smaller (4.0") screen. It had a very nice screen, but I wanted a bigger one. And when I got my Electrify, it just felt like the right phone.
I've seen Samsung's AMOLED screens. They aren't bad, but they aren't a selling point, to me. My last phone was a Samsung, and the call and reception quality going from Samsung to Motorola was huge, and the battery life isn't bad, either.

Good post.
I moved from the EVO to EVO 4G to Photon. From reading reviews at time I considered the Photon, I was fully prepared to hate the pentile screen. But, my eyes just plain did not see the pentile pixelation (from reading posts at the time, some peoples' eyes saw it, some didn't). I spent an hour in the store before buying the Photon.
During my return window, the Samsung Epic came out with larger screen (physically, but lower-res). Back to the store I go - I found the Sammy's screen to be way over-saturated wrt colors, and washed out in the sun.

One you've gone Superamoled black, there's no going back

Seriously at this point with the whole issue of contesting the SLCD 2 as "better", would you ever settle for a non-oled screen?

Honestly, I think all the new screens look amazing. Ours especially, everyone I know with a smartphone they always get upset when they realize they don't have a Samsung with such a good screen.
This is my first Samsung phone, previously all i've had was HTC phones.. I'll say the last htc phone i had was the thunderbolt and sensation(yeah qHD.. not that great.), and they dont even come close..
YeH I came from an Atrix. The difference is ....astounding.

I laugh at my Moto Backflip when I see it now and think "how the hell did I even use this thing" haha. I was so close to getting an HTC Inspire when ATT had the refurb GS2 for $10 and am sooooo glad I got it instead. One of the first times I'm not already anxious for my contract to run out to upgrade my phone.

I too came from the HTC Inspire to the SGS2...and the screen difference is just silly. However I can't knock the Inspire too badly...it was my first Android phone after owning iphones for 4 years straight and it was a pleasant experience. Lots of dev support too.
But no question I prefer Samsung now.
I love my G S II, and the vibrant screen. But, I haven't spent any time with the ONE X. Isn't that the first time any one (like a reviewer, professional etc, not a user here on xda) has claimed the SLCD 2 to be better than SAMOLED(+)? I've heard complaints that colors are oversaturated on the SAMOLED screens, but that's it. I prefer my screen over my wife's iPhone 4, but mostly because of size.
I have no loyalty to SAMOLED, I wouldn't let that drive my decision. I don't worry about technology details, I want to see and use it. The GS II has the best screen I've seen and used in person (I haven't had an opportunity to really play with the Galaxy Nexus either). I think I would prefer GS III over ONE X, but not because of the screen. If anything, the consensus is the ONE X screen takes the cake. I do have some loyalty to Samsung, though. Its been a long time since I've seen a really nice HTC, and I'm hesitant to jump on the first one.

In the last two years I've had the Inspire, iPhone 4, Infuse, and SGS2.
The Inspire had the worst screen. I prefer the Infuse and SGS2 over the iPhone 4 screen despite the lower resolution.
I will not get a phone without SAMOLED unless the model has an engineering flaw (ie Galaxy S nonfunctional GPS). I love the deep black and vivid colors.
* I just wanted to add... The argument that a SAMOLED 1280x720 pentile screen doesn't look good is BS. Having played with a friend's Note, I can honestly say I cannot notice the pentile layout.
I recently checked out the galaxy nexus screen in person and wow, the pentile is no big deal! It's just so great seeing real blacks, especially in the dark.. Makes it look like things are floating

I don't know why, but sammy's infuse samoled looks better than my I777.... The last one looks green-ish

SAMOLED screens have true blacks... because those pixels are turned off... but the new SLCD2 screens have true whites where as SAMOLED whites have a blueish tint because they tend to run colder.
It depends on what you like.

Same here. My previous phone (Infuse) also had the trademark over-saturated popping out colors, but whites were very white and it was overall an amazing screen. For some reason, my SII's screen is a little bit dull and greenish as well, with whites not being quite as white, if not kind of yellowish.
Interestingly, I compared my SII's screen with my friend's (also SII) and they were very different. My friend's was more like my Infuse's, with crisp whites and the poppy colors. For some reason, it's just some SII units that seem to have a darkened/dulled out whites kind of screen. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or a software one, but regardless, it is the only thing right now that is preventing me from thinking my SII is flawless.
Someone else also told me that AMOLED screens can be a bit inconsistent and so the variation between even same units can be noticeable. That didn't really make me feel better because that just means I got the poopy screen while someone else got the nice one =_=
Went from a vibrant to a sensation. Blacks on SAMOLED are amazing, but I can totally live with LCD. One thing I could not live at all with is the burn in effect on AMOLED. This drove me crazy, as much as I loved the colors, I couldn't live with that.
I have a perfect screen luckily
I've never had the burn in effect

I don't think the screen has actual burn in unless the screen is on an absurd amount of time, like a demo. If you are referring to what I think you are, its more like ghosting.
The captivate did this too. I could see what looked like burn in from the clock over certain colors. The xda app splash screen was an easy one to pick it out. Its worse on my GS II. The funny thing is the areas that are black in the notification shade cause a bigger effect than the areas lit up. I see the top bar being a little dulled, except the areas I would expect burn in, like the clock or signal. Because its reversed and black causes more discoloration I believe what I heard in the captivate days. It'd residual energy build up or something. They compared it to an e-ink screen. If the screen doesn't get a full refresh you see ghosts of images that look burned in. But you can clear them by refreshing the whole screen. A reboot for me almost always makes the effect go away. It then slowly accumulates and gets worse. The residual image also changes as I change ROMs or themes.

Yeah, I love the sAMOLED+ on my i777.
But, I will say that while the blacks are deep and lovely, the whites have a very very slight tinge of coolness (blue) to them, which in certain conditions is annoying to me. I tend to only really notice when I look from my nice IPS computer monitor down to my phone.
Sometimes the colors are a little too saturated for me. I wish saturation was adjustable. Anyone know any tricks?
I had an Atrix with the pentile display before, and while the whites were a bit more neutral, the pentile-ness was definitely perceivable. There's a granularity that doesn't happen on my GS2.
I kinda miss that lapdock though.

[Q] Is the Pentile screen noticeable on the Galaxy S III?

I'm thinking about buying the Galaxy S III, but the Pentile screen is really holding me back. I mean, why buy a device with a screen that looks bad and has to be looked at for several hours a week?
I've heard that at high resolution, Pentile screens don't matter. But I want some opinions from all you people out there.
And what would you expect to see looking at a poor quality entitle screen?
My s3 is probably the clearest looking screen I've looked upon

I've read some of the older device reviews on tech websites and whenever the device had a Pentile screen, the review always criticized it.
I'll trust Samsung on this, since there pretty good at making screens.

Older AMOLED Pentile Display were bad because they have a low ppi (240ppi on the SGS1)
But SGS3 screen has a 306ppi and the "pentile effect" seems to be not there (at least I do not see it on my SGS3

No matter what? Even if you're holding it like a inch away from your phone? I usually use my iPod touch (I have a Blackberry phone, it sucks for web browsing) when in the mornings when I don't feel like getting out of my bed. I usually hold it just 6 inches away from my eyes.
My S3 has to be the clearest screen I have ever seen. Had it for a few days now and still doesn't fail to amaze me whenever I turn the screen on.
You don't have to worry about holding it 6 inches or even 2 inches away from your face.
Its really beautiful...much better then my Nexus...
The best way to solve your problem is to go the nearest store and have a look at the demo unit. Don't believe what you hear or read, believe what you see.

I saw the Motorola Droid Razr before I knew what pentile was and I thought it looked weird and pixellated so it's certainely not placebo. At the ppi of the GS3 it doesn't matter imo. I do still notice it (but not like I can count the pixels.. but it just is a little bit different then normal rgb screens) but the screen is still somehow the best I've seen in a phone.
You shouldn't keep yourself from buying it because of this as it not even really noticable, it's the best screen there is imo and it even spares some battery.
I can notice the pentile effect if I stare hard at the screen from less than 10cm away. I've compared my S3 to the HOX and the HOX does indeed has a finer screen. But still the S3 has one amazing screen. The blacks are much better although the colours seems a little over saturated and slightly on the warm side.

Well then I guess you have two options 1.) Wait two weeks and then go look at the phone 2.) Go with a different phone.
The only time I notice the pentile screen is whilst reading some text. It is barely recognisable but if and when you notice it you'll subconsciously start to look out for it. But it is very minor indeed, and changing the font of text helps to more or less eradicate it.
Aside from that minor quibble re text I have to say that this screen is absolutely awesome. Colours and contrast are absolutely amazing. I tend to set the screen mode to Natural as I think this gives the best colour effect.
I know this screen is awesome because when I switch from it to my iPad 3's retina screen I don't feel any degradation, if anything pictures and videos look better on it than on the iPad 3 - and that's saying something!
Does this screen have the same issues as the Galaxy Nexus screen? Purple tint at low bright setting and whites looking like old yellow newspaper?

I didn't own the G Nexus, but there is no purple tint at low brightness. My S2 had a slight yet noticeable yellowing at low brightness - this does not
Yes, if you will use the phone under a magnifying glass
"Super Amoled Plus" will never work with High Resolution. They are not designed for that.
Move up dude
I my opinion It is noticeable, but only at ~3" away and I do have 20/20 vision but in any other situation It's fine, I have even fooled a few friends who own an s2 that it was a 'plus' display but as above you are best going to have a look
Its noticeable, coming from an Xperia S (which I gave to my wife for this phone) and having a G Note which died before the Xperia S, its the same for me as the G Note.
It's mainly around fonts and small icons which is more noticeable, definitely not in pictures unless you have super vision, but most of the time you're looking at fonts or small icons, so yes its there.
But FWIW I wouldn't trade it for the contrast, I've never owned a phone with such contrast (actually the Note was the same), but having said that in sunlight forget using this phone, side by side in sunlight with the Xperia S, the Sony wins hands down.
