[Q] Atrix Queries - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have a few Atrix specific queries.
It might sound dumb but i really want to know.
1. Whats the actual difference between Atrix and Atrix 4G.
2. Tegra 2 - HP H.264 Video playback Issue , can it ever play HP H264 videos via some software update or 3rd party player. Link
3. Android 2.2 supports sharing mobile internet on a wifi network by setting the mobile as a wireless router or hotspot , does this feature work out of the box on atrix.
4. Is there a hardware required to be present on the phone for NFC or when motorola releases the Android 2.3 update , NFC will work on the atrix as 2.3 enables NFC on the phones.
I really liked this phone a lot but with so many unanswered questions cant make up my mind.
Will keep posting my queries here.
Thanks.

There is no difference between Atrix and Atrix 4G, Atrix is just the European version. Tethering out of the box will get you charged by Att, you want to root to avoid that. And the Atrix does not have a NFC chip.

If you jus start using the tethering than Att will add a tethering package to your bill. You want to root to get PDAnet which gives free tethering.

I think that what he means, is that if you go into the phone and enable/set up the tethering option, ATT will know this and switch you to the data plan with tethering.
This can be avoided by rooting the phone - which if you have access to a pc is extremely simple and can be done in basically a one-click process.

So we should use an app like Wifi tether? Or do we have to use PDA net?

Any tethering app that doesn't let Att find out about your tethering.

I don't get what's the big deal with NFC. For one, the technology is hardly even used in the US currently... and even if it was, it'd still probably be few and far between. It's about as big of a perk to me as a gyroscope (Ha).... which isn't much of one at all.

I stay in India and we dont have ATnT here i will be continuing with Vodafone
when Atrix launches here.
I am not aware of term rooting as i am new to android world , but will it be possible to root atrix easily so that i can share my internet over wifi using atrix as hotspot.

Atrix is very easy to root especially with a computer.

Well.... if you have been following the iPhone world, think of rooting as jailbreaking. In short, it basically gives you access to and control of every folder on the phone's internal storage (or to a certain extent). Allows you to modify things such as the launcher used, themes, hopefully in time the bootloader, etc...

Rooting your phone will void the warranty if you leave it there, but the process is reversible and it is fairly easy to unroot and cover your tracks.
Rooting comes from Unix terms. Rooting gives you root access by making you the administrator/superuser.

The h.264 performance should be improved by a software update that is planned for the future. Heard that form a buddy with some information on such deals. It was known that the Atrix would release without the ability to do 1080p and such files but that a software release would unlock the native support from the chip.

1. Can someone comment on the browser text rendering is it readable or hazy.
How well is the pinch zoom , is it responsive.
2. How many people are facing the random reboot issue , is it after rooting or users who have not rooted are also facing it.
3. Are all the apps displaying properly on the qHD resolution.
4. How is gaming on this device.

1 - Yes , is this yes for readable or hazy , i saw a video review on youtube of the atrix where a full site was loaded and the text was not clearly visible until the site was fully zoomed.
2 - You sure that the phone itself has no random reboot issues.
3 - So there are still some apps that still dont support the qhd resol , do they refuse to load completely or show some odd formating or show some borders.
* Sorry for all this lame queries.

1) Perfectly legible to me.
2) Mine has yet to reboot by itself after 12 hours of usage.
3) So far, all of them load for me but the graphics may not be sized appropriately. Words With Friends is a good example.

After reading all the issues faced by so many users , i am wondering if everyone is facing these issues on there atrix or only some.
Is it after rooting or on the stock phone itself.
How can motorola release a phone with so many bugs was there testing team sleeping or what.
Users complaining about phone screen freezes after alarm snooze , this is ridiculous
Music player , thats the most basic functionalty.
Motorola should have delayed the release if they already knew about these issues.
I am still wondering if everyone is facing all these issues on there atrix or is it that some handsets are buggy ?

I am having almost none of the issues so far. Only one I noticed is the camera is not great and can take bluish photos if the led is the main light source.

ok I have a HTC Hero locked to Orange (UK) and wondering what the must have apps and widgets are, what I can do to improve it etc. If you guys could share your vast knowledge that would be great.
Also please bear in mind I am fairly techy least people tell me but sometimes looking at others threads here I get lost quite easily.

Woah,... Where on earth to begin?......
1st question to ask yourself,... Are you happy to keep it Orange branded?.... Or do you want to install a custom ROM?.... Bear in mind, some ROMS have little tweaks added for better performance and stability, some are experimental, and have bugs that that need a little ironing out, but you could swap and change as many times as you want to test and find one best for you.
BUT BE WARNED,... Changing your ROM will in theory invalidate your warranty,... but you can always flash back to an Orange ROM should you need to send it for repair.
So its up to you?... This is the guide I followed to install a custom ROM,... Check it out,.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253
Second,... I'd update the radio to the latest one,... The radio is something to do with how well network, wifi, gps etc work,... I updated mine and saw a big difference in network reception.
,..... Now we can start talking about apps,... All I can do here is give my recommendations,....
Apps
TuneWiki - Can show lyrics for music on your phone or even whilst streaming LastFM.
Spareparts - Extra 'settings' options not available as standard. i.e... Transition animations, Font size, Haptic feedback. Also shows Battery & App statistics.
Shazam - No explanation needed.
Opera Mini - " ".
Movies (by Flixter) - Local movie show times + cinema and DVD reviews (?).
Co-Pilot Live - Satnav.
Astro - File manager.
ACV aka Droid Comic Viewer - Self explanatory.
Audio Manager - To set volume levels for Alarm, Media Player, Alerts, Ringer, System and Calls,.. All in one easy place,... Can then add as a widget to one of your homescreens.
Games
WaveBlazer - Was addicted to this on my 5800, couldn't resist getting it again.
Armagedon Squadron - As above
MotoXMania - I think this is from iPhone, get the moto x'er from one side of course to the other by tilting phone to control biker's weight distribution.
SpeedForge 3d - 3d racing game with mines and rockets set in future, quite difficult (for me) but still fun.
Tetris - Classic!!
Solitaire - Always fun.
PapaStack - Puzzle game, have to stack up all given blocks and make them stand for 10seconds before moving on to the next level.
ThrottleCopter - Based on old flash game "copter". Click button to control throttle on helicopter to get it though the course. The most addictive game so far.
Replica Island - Fun platform game.
EDIT,... Found another even more addictive game now,...
Sketch Online - Online Pictionary,... I cant stop playing it, Minimum an hour every day!
Hope some of that helps pal.
Peace.

Not a radio like FM radio,... I think radio refers to anything that sends or transmits,. i.e The WiFi, GPS, actual network connection. So updating the 'radio' will make those better, and sometimes may increase battery life as well.

[Q] Flash and Wireless Questions

Hello xda-developer community,
I have multiple questions, so please forgive me, that i put them all in this Thread
Okay my first Questions would be:
Is there browser-flash intigrated?
Can i play Flash Videos from various sites with it, for example myvideo/break etc without a app?
Second Question is:
Can i use this mobile device without a Contract which has Wireless Plan?
Note: I'm using the Internet when I really need to, so i don't have a contract which covers Data, this means I cant let the Internet run 24/7.
Third Question is:
Does the Alarm Clock work, is there even one?
I'm truly sorry for my nuubishness, on every page i visited people said different thing, just need this to clear out everything i need to know.
Yours Truly

There is but its not perfect. Its called Uzard and you'll be able to find by searching xda, I think its in the themes and apps section.
If you want to view a lot of flash content then Id reccomend running an android build from your sd card. Its a lot better for flash.

You can, however.......... You will need to install a program to automatically disconnect the data connection after use. I would recommend "WM Long life" or "Touch Tools". You can find them over in themes and apps....
You might want to disable things like automatic weather updating and HTC Peep or at least set them to only update every now and then......

For me, no it doesnt. Not reliably anyway......
For 97.5% of people the alarm function works fine. There are other apps out there like "klaxon" or G-Alarm" if you need them.
Hope thats helped...........

[Q] What are the best tweaks?

I am about to receive my new archos 101 later this week. I am reading the forums, and so far i have gathered i will need to put android 2.2 on it, and also the android market. what other tweaks should i do when i get it? Apps i need to know about? This will be the first android i have owned so i do not know where to begin.
If there is a thread that addresses this question, please point me in the right direction. my search didn't come up with much as to a list of things that are essential to getting the most out of the archos 101. thanks!

Why would you be disappointed?
I had my archos 101 since November 2010 and I was never disappointed with it.
Its a matter of how you use your device.

Agreed. I've been very happy with my 101. And I tried several popular alternatives before this. Like the Viewsonic, Nook color, Huewii/Ideos S7, and some knock off chinese clone. The 101 beats them all.
thanks :-D
any news on what i need to do once it is out of the box? On my touch pro 2 it took me forever to realize that the first thing to do was flash a custom rom and other tweaks like OC'ing it. any thing i should do to the archos 101?
well...plug it in and charge it...
If you want root and ability to OC, etc...I think you need to jump down to the UrkDroid threads. I'm very happy with stock and hoping for some way to root it. If you don't upgrade the stock I think z4root works though...as well as some additional codecs, but then you are on Eclair. Upgrade brings Froyo. Can't give you much advice beyond that...just load the market apk and start installing stuff.

Check out this thread over on forums archos fans .com . I found a lot of good tips here. (i dont have enough post yet to post an external link.) but under the top thread gen 8 devices there is a post titled newbie tips, and some general set up info.
Something that i have done to really help is upgrade to froyo, then go into the power management and set it to over drive. yes i kills the battery faster, but it seems more responsive. also a new launcher program helps too. i am currently using one called zeam.
I'd say get market, a launcher (adw, launcherpro, zeam) and if you are comfortable with linux, the urukdroid hack. i was a little disappointed with the laginess of my 70 at first, mostly the media scanning but the SDE and Uruk make me jealous of no tablet.
got it today, this thing is nice. i am sitll getting used to android though. I cant get it to access my windows shares though, i input my username/password correctly and it cannot connect...
also, how do i get the codecs on here? must i really pay for them?

Can't help ya with the shares, but you could try removing security from them for a bit and make sure you can connect. That's just basic troubleshooting.
With regards to codecs, probably not. It comes default with a lot of stuff and I can play almost every video/audio file I have. Only a few needed to be converted. Very few statistically speaking. I think the ones you buy are very specific. So try what you have first.
I've not had to download any codecs. The handfull of videos I have watched worked fine.
Zeam Launcher is a must for me. Fastest Launcher I have seen. Love it so much I put it on my Droid X and my wifes Droid2.
Market and Appbrain is a must as is Flash 10.1. Don't forget to do the "Market Fix" to get all the market apps to show up. Forget the stock keyboard as its a laggy POS. Swype does not work at all but Slideit works great. Well worth the price for the amount of hair you will rip from your head trying to get the stock keyboard to register your inputs.
thanks guys! i will look for the market fix soon as i have noticed a few apps are missing. including zeam.
Also, i cannot figure out how to tether this thing to my wm6.5 tilt 2.
i have always been able to tether windows machines, and i can even make a wireless network with it. however, the archos doesnt find my wireless router network, and when i connect it through usb or bluetooth it asks me for APN and username/password which i have no idea what they are.
any ideas?

I did get mine to tether to my touch pro 2. I had to use blue tooth and for sprint the apn is internet.com ( a quick google search should turn up other carriers) user id and password are usually blank.
I'd say autostarts with Archangel is a nice tweak stupid email app always loads at boot wasting precious milliseconds of my life

VOIP apps - any of them are working?

Was anyone able to successfully use any VOIP app on this phone?
I tried several of them, i can her the other party fine but all they hear is some distortion.
I tested with Skype, Line2, Sipdroid, Fring.
Fring and Sipdroid are totally unusable.
It seems like Motorola screwed up the voice API's on the phone so no VOIP app works..
You try CSipsimple?
This is a serious let down for me. I was looking forward to being able to use Skype on my phone after many years of crappy WinMo phones. This SUCKS
Skype works fine for me!
Over wifi only!
does anybody know how to bypass the message in skype that states somethin about MAKING CALLS ONLY OVER WIFI, anybody know how to do that?
bump.........
Agree, voip sucks. I'm coming from iphone 4 and this is one major thing that I miss. There were so many voip apps in ios, they all worked perfectly.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
I literally tried every single free (and two paid) voip apps on the market yesterday. Nothing works on this phone like it should. Either the mic is all messed up or the audio is choppy, Motorola really messed something up here.
Same here. I've tried several of them and none works right. The same apps work perfectly on my Galaxy Tab so my assumption is that this is a Motorola mess-up.
Did you guys ever stop to think that it's the applications that don't support the phone, not the phone itself? Blaming Motorola for a third party app not working is the most ludicrous thing I've heard all day.

...no? That doesn't even make any sense. There isn't some magical "voip support" that a phone manufacturer codes into their device. Be patient and wait for developers to update their apps to support new hardware that's barely been out 2 weeks.

I have used many voip apps now (free and paid) and can confirm that there is some problem with this phone when it comes to VoIP apps. I've used same apps on nexus one and they work absolutely fine. Now i m back in Sweden and no way to return this phone in ATT store
Yes, I'm not blaming motorola, however, when this phone has a dual core processor then why is it still unable to do voip?
It was the similar problem with nexus one and nexus s that I had. I guess it's android then. They barely made the support for voip without tweaking it's performance. I never faced this problem with ios. I hate apple products because they are not open source but I can't stop my self from appreciating the good things in their os.

Again, it's pretty obvious you just don't understand how this works. It's application specific support for the PHONE. There is nothing on the phone, Android or otherwise, that makes voip possible or not possible. It's all in the app itself. The new hardware hasn't been out for very long, so give the APPLICATION DEVELOPERS time to update their software to support the device. It's the same reason some games don't work on the Atrix yet. It's not because Motorola decided not to support the game, it's because the game doesn't yet support the device.
Please stop spreading misinformation.

No sir. Its pretty obvious YOU don't know how this works.
If every VOIP app on the market does not work ONLY on the the atrix, but works well on every other phone i tested, and even honeycomb - then there is a problem specific to the atrix and NOT the app itself.
If it is just one single app that does not work - then it is an app issue.
In our case, ALL the voip apps are not working because Motorola changed something in the way they are routing the audio and using the Android standard audio API's that those app need to work correctly. Any app that is trying to access the mic or the earpiece fails on this phone either with stuttering audio, crashes or static noise. it is like that with every single voip app and i tested them all.
The atrix is not running some new version of android that these apps just don't know how to support or there is a new android API...no...this is 2.2 we are talking about here and i don't see how each and every developer can fix his app just for the atrix.
The only way i see this getting resolved is by a firmware update from Motorola to fix what they have changed and get the phone to work with normal android standards.

You're halfway there, now put it all together.
The Atrix has a Tegra 2 chipset that does things differently than every other phone out there, correct. I bet you anything when a newer chipset comes out, we'll see the same cycle again. The reason it works on every other phone is because they're using established hardware. The Atrix is new, so it's up to Skype and Fring and whatever other VOIP apps out there to update their software to support the new hardware. Motorola patching in a hack to let it work with outdated architecture is the most stupid thing I've heard all day. The Atrix is unique right now, A LOT of developers will need to update their apps to support it.
BE PATIENT. Let developers update their apps to support the new hardware that's barely been out 2 weeks. Motorola doesn't need to do anything. App developers do.

[Q] LG Optimus LTE root (Japanese version)

Hello guys,
I have been reading this forum for quite a while and found a lot of useful information here.
So, first of all thank you to all the guys who put some hard work in developing those programs to make our lives and our smartphones better!
So here goes nothing. Just got this LG Optimus LTE phone some days ago.
And it is packed full with apps I don't need and that Docomo prevents us to remove them. Thanks to this the batteries goes bye bye even faster than expected.
So I would love to get root access to get full control.
like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376233&page=6
I read some threads, followed some methods -like 4 or 5 different ones- but nothing worked so far... Anyone who had success in that matter?
Really want to get an Optimus LTE (L-01D) but need to know I can root it first.
type this URL in your browser: i can't post links yet. logsoku.com/thread/anago.2ch.net/smartphone/1324176244/
these guys seemed to have tried everything. Scroll to #45, doesn't look like the Japanese version can be rooted.
they tried a bunch of things as well but to no avail.
I'm just curious, but the reason why I want to root it is so that I can get the nook app on it so I can read. I was able to use VPN to download apps on my HTC Desire HD, but when i got the Arrows Tab LTE, i wasn't able to use VPN to get the Nook app. is it possible with the Optimus?

I don't use this app, so that would be a tough question to answer.
Thing is, since docomo pretty much installed and configured the phone as they liked -with a crappy Home, slow as hell, that can be changed though- I am wondering if they would charge you extra for tethering.
They might have installed something to check on that. But this is just a random guess.
After a lot of research, I found this thread:
h t t p : / / houchi.net/products/l01-root
I tried and I successfully managed to root my phone following the instructions.
Heads up, it's all in Japanese BUT, if you just download the archive file and read the content of the files at the root of the folder with a text editor, you can just copy/paste the different instructions to make it work.
If it's too much trouble for some people, contact me and I will try to put the instructions somewhere else in english and with the Mac version of command line (really the same as for Linux).
Did not have time to have fun with it yet, but I removed some of the crap that the carrier bundled with the phone.
I will still have to look why it takes forever to start comparing to a Galaxy S for example (4 minutes is way too long...).
i tried and not successfully, only install Supper Use. You can explain for my by English, more more details
superuser wont work without root, try gingerbreak?
