Does the HTC Hero has enought performance? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI at all HTC Hero users.
ATM i use a htc touch pro, it is nice but i want to change to android, because there are a lot off nice apllications, and the ports for the touch pro are too laggy, eat too much battery etc.
So i want a nice android device.
I have a question for you:
Does the HTC Hero has enought power for android (at this moment)?
For me, the following things are important:
1. applications (navigation system or other GPS-programs; and other apps work without problems)
2. games like angry birds; paper toss ect work without a workaround: just install from the market and play
I know that dualcore-devices will come next month but i need this phone for some games(like explained), listen to music, surf a little bit on web and use applications like gps sport etc.
I also do not want 4.0" devices, 3,2" is perfect for me.
So my question is: does the HTC Hero has enought power(with the right rom and overclocked to 691-729MHZ) for my use?
Thanks for your answers,

Google Navigation works okay for me, sometimes slightly slow and the latest version of angry birds is laggy but Paper Toss works relatively well.
Honestly, at this stage I wouldn't recommend it unless you're on a really tight budget. Even then, a phone such as the ZTE Blade which has a high res 3.5 inch screen is under £100, if you want a HTC then go for a Legend which has decent enough performance.

the simple answer is no. In the current android climate, the hero doesn't cut it. I still think its a great sized phone, cant agree more with you on that one, but its processor, no matter how overclocked, doesn't come close to even the cpu of the original droid, never mind the snapdragons, or the future dual core cpus. The hero doesn't have a dedicated graphics chipset, so you can wave goodbye to angry birds, and all but the simplest android games. The hero is only capable of openGLS 1.1 (I think?) and most phones and games nowadays use openGLS 2
GPS... Well, for me it's been a largely poor experience. The hero's battery is poor at best under heavyish use, so you will have to have a charger to hand for GPS. and even then, it runs hot, and isn't the best experience ever (UI lag). Others may have faired better in this department though.
So no, I would never recommend buying a hero now. Its been a great phone for the time I've had it, and I'll be sad to see it go, but at the same time I really can't wait to embrace a more powerful, capable android phone as soon as my contract runs out.

Thanks for the fast answers.
It wasn't the answer, i wanted to hear... but i am happy to hear it from you, than to feel it after buying this device.
The Blade isn't my phone because the software development isn't as big as i like. I want some tweaked devices, with good hardware.
Because i buyed an Acer Neotouch S200 (same hardware like the HD2) but it wasn't as good as the HD2: bad GPS, no good software, quite bad.
So i need to wait for the dual-cores to get a nice andoird experience?
For me it is important:- i want to listen to music(stream radio/ mp3)
- use a fast GPS-programm to navigate and to do sport
- use applications like : rss, kcal counter etc...
- the phone need to be handy (no 4" display)
- play some games not the newest ones like quake2/3 , just little games for freetime
big thanks to you,

Maybe you could look at the Original Desire then? Screen is 3.7 inch but it would suit all your needs, plus it's going to get Gingerbread so I think there will be development on it for another year. I don't think it's too expensive now either.
Good luck with whatever you choose to buy.

Wait for Wildfire S. It has more RAM and faster CPU and its a bit smaller

+1 here
My biggest gripe with the Hero is it's performance. When android was fresh and fairly simple and with not too many demanding apps it was fine, just. Now though it is like running that computer you bought ages ago, where it runs the OS ok, but once you do stuff it kinda feels a bit sluggish. OK if you don't push it but you'll always be wanting more.
I'm personally looking forward to something more snappier in the summer when my contract is due.

[Q] Is the lack of Multi-Touch a big flaw?

Hi guys.
I've had sarah (my Nokia 6020) since God-knows-when (!), and so I'm not familiar with the modern cell phones and their characteristics.
I really like X10, but its lack of multi-touch is a little annoying, and some friends have told me to buy a phone which supports multi-touch.
I wanna know what exactly I will miss if I buy X10 and ignore its lack of multi-touch? Is it only important in games? How frequently games use multi-touch and is it impossible to play multi-touch games in X10?
Thanks.
Hi - Basically - it's only certain games which really need to use multitouch.. ones where you have to do 2 things at once.. there are some options to overcome this in certain cases, such as using a Wii Remote paired with your phone.. Personally I am not bothered at all about the lack of multitouch, because there are lots of games you can get which don't need MT... There are many good reasons to get one which, for me at least far outway the lack of MT.
At first I was hesitant to buy the X10 cuz it didn't support MT as well. It's a big step for me cuz I've never used a smart phone before but I do know lots about it lol. To be honest, I really don't think multi touch is an important feature, unless you're really into games that needs it. I've had the X10 for almost a month now and I absolutely love it there are great games in the App store that doesn't need multi touch like Radiant, Abduction, Totemo, etc etc. You should definitely get Rachael, you won't be disappointed
Not really, but there is talk about that in 2.1, but we don't talk about that here... MT is a taboo topic

lack of mt is quite bad for gaming. example game like pspxdroid for playing pspx game and other action game. the point is a problem is a problem if u think is a problem. if you really want a phone with mt , end of the day it just going to come and hunt you if u get a x10 if u dun mind wait for 2.1 and see is there mt which some said there is, if not you can get desire or galaxy s which both are great phone.
Do you use your phone to call people...?
I do, and I don't need multi-touch for that.
If you're coming from an old dumb-phone, either you don't need multi-touch, or you're expecting your new phone to change your life in ways you never thought possible.
Trust me, the x10 will not change your life in ways you never thought possible, and no, you don't need multi-touch...
Thank you everyone, your opinion is really helpful.
Considering the fact that I'm a gamer, I think MT will be needed for me someday, but I understand I shouldn't overvalue it.
Why is it making a decision about a cell phone to buy is so hard? It's a lot easier with PCs, laptops, wives, Digicams, MP3 Players, ...
I studied a lot about X10 and MT and I'm almost certain that there will be no MT for X10 (SE made it clear 5-6 days after the rumor about MT in 2.1 started).
Ah, and every phone has its pros and cons and it makes no sense to consider them as "taboo".

there have also been reports of the touch panel manufacturers saying that they can enable MT on their ST pad with trickery too.
so i wouldnt believe anything anyone says for now. and just wait.
but if you are a 'gamer' then buy a psp or something.. its a mobile phone not a console/gaming pc
The point is that multitouch for as i know is used in web browsers and in games.Someone correct me if i am wrong. So if you would like to play the you should buy a PSP or Nintendo or whatever portable console, for more than one reason. My PSP's battery for example lasts up to 5 hours of intense gaming, and you still have the phone for calling, internet and so on.The control is better on the handheld console with or without multitouch.
But... since almost all smartphones have multitouch it whould be nice to have this feature even if i would not use it often.
So the bottom line is that i have a PSP for gaming so i really do not need the multitouch feature.
I'm playing Diablo 1 on psx4droid and haven't noticed any problems so far (except laggy video and sound stuttering which seems to be common for most devices). Good native android games are yet to come. If you're looking to play some decent games now, then go for PSP.
And by the way, HTC also stated there will be no mt for G1 so we shall see...

I guess none of the above. Why would they bother with adding custom driver if the device was Synaptics compatibile?

Does your wife know she's third in your list, eh? Lmfao!
The lack of hardware support for MT if true is a puzzling omission on the part of SE. The IPhone has had MT I think since the beginning & to leave out the feature from a flagship product is a fumble on SE's part IMO.
The phone over all is a great device even without MT but if gaming is a priority for you I would take a pass on the X10, & look for a device that supports MT not one that may support it.
Guys, please...
Of course I have a PSP!
But, 2 things make me care about my phone's gaming potential too:
1. I don't always carry my PSP around, and even if I have it, I can'y play with it everywhere (I am 30 years old )!
2. PSP is a very old device and its games are mostly the same with phone games, without touch controls. I don't think PSP is that much better than a phone for gaming (a lot of my friends have the same opinion).
I generally don't like the idea that it's a phone ==> if you need something else from your phone go buy something else...
I can't carry around a lot of gadgets...

[Q] Is the new HTC Flyer really worth it?

Hey guys
I have owned HTC devices since the G1 n now i have the mytouch 4G rooted running Evil SD lates 2.3 port for it.
I wanna invest some money in a tablet. The MYT4G has a good size screen but sometimes it can strain your eyes when watching movies or heavy internet surfing. I want a portable tablet with the latets software and some of the newest feature. I have t mo. Here in the states. So the WiFi version of the Flyer is the only one available yet..
I have a questions. Your answers will help me deacide to buy one.
1. Does the Flyer have the ability to connect to a phones hotspot? Meaning if I tether wirelessly
2. I know there is no phone calls capabilities, but can you skype and quik?
3. Does it have a SD port?
4. And based on your experience with the device do you think it will be rootable in the future?
5. Also how does it sound? The speakers and w a headset is it real good.
Thanks I have many more questions but i think these r the most important for me. Any other things you think I should know prior to buying I would love to hear em.
Thanks for reading
Hi
Yes to all of those, I have the 3g model, and love it the form factor of it is perfect. I've played with quite a few 10" and they aren't for me.
The only down side I can see to flyer its a touch heavy, but its no heavier than any tablets out at the moment, I just would preferred HTC to have put HTC on a wee diet.
The CPU is fast, the only slow down I've every had was first boot up whilst my apps where caching.
The speakers aren't great great, but there not bad, you could listen to music or watch a movie, saying that if I was listening to music I'd probably hook up some speakers.
But really loving the flyer.

To answer your initial question, it really depends on what you are looking for. If you want a 7" device or the ability to write digital notes, highlight and mark on books, PDFs, and websites, or need to sketch/draw on the go, then yes, it is worth it simply because there is no other device that would allow you the features that the pen does. And if you are in the market for a 7" tablet, I would say it's the best 7" out right now.
To answer your other questions:
1.Yes, I have T-Mobile and have had no problem connecting it to my cell phone wirelessly
2. I was able to download Skype from the market; I don't use Skype, but I'm assuming it shouldn't be a problem. Could not find Qik in the market.
3. MicroSD port, yes
4. I've never rooted my devices, so I cannot say.
5.The sound is pretty clear and loud (this is based off watching videos, I haven't listen to music on here). I don't necessarily like the placement of the speakers, I thought they should have them on the both sides of the device for a more balanced stereo sound. But I'm into audio, so that's just my thought. But they are clear and can get loud when the volume is turned up to the max.
I have a few videos on my YouTube channel, CheckThisGadget, going over the HTC Flyer and doing the pen test. So that should help you in making your decision also.
Great device, as other have said.
In addition, as HTC release firmware updates I think it'll get faster as HTC optimise Sense and Honeycomb is supposed more efficient.
It lacks phone functionality..
They made a change to the market which causes my apps button to be accesible only by menu button.
A Lot of software available trough other devices ain't accessible by the flyers market.
HTC Watch sometimes works , sometimes not.
All by all .... I think a lot of work on the rom has to be done. It's not worth at THIS moment in my opinion.
To the OP, yes to the inquiries. I feel rooting will be dependent upon popularity of the device. Speakers are what you would expect from small compact drivers... A bit tinny, but okay.
IMO, the pen integration sets this device apart from other tablets. HTC did a good job adapting apps for pen usage. I used it extensively at meetings during the week, and it was impressive. If you don't have a need for the pen then, there are better options for tablets out their... Again in my opinion.
Thanks for all your replys
One of the post did make really consider what I wanted it for, n its basically to replace my phone in terms of web browsing n media player. I like to call using my phone I really don't see why I woulnt want a tablet to make a phone call. LOL but the 3g will make it real independent.
I'm not to crazy bout HTC scribe but its a very nice feature since I do go to college it would be great for note taking.
I also looked at the notion link tablet. Idk if its out or what but it looked great.
Thanks again for all the helpful replies I think I'm 95% leaning towards HTC flyer than moat devices.

I too considerd the Notion Ink a while back but decided against it due to the tablet coming from a small shop in India and support may or may not be up to par. Plus ordering one put you on a list as units were being built.
As for browsing the web, the Flyer is great. I enjoy surfing the web more on the Flyer than my Xoom. I have not had one force close on the Flyer yet which I cannot say for the Xoom. Tabbed browsing is missing for now but Honeycomb will fix that. The speakers are pretty good, not great. You can download an equalizer from the market that will help when using headphones.
Overall, it's a nice device and suits my needs perfectly (web browsing, email, occasional games)
Yes its worth it, it is the only true multi function 7 inch tablet on the market.
I got mine two days ago in Hong Kong and I'm really loving it! It cost ~USD 700 (for the Wifi + 3G version w/stylus). I have to say it's the perfect size and the screen resolution is perfect for browsing! I would say it's worth the USD 700 that I paid for. Now I just have to get a 3G data in China...
I'd say it is worth it. I rarely use my laptop now because I enjoy using my tablet for browsing, email, etc. I did buy the Scribe pen but I actually rarely use it. Maybe if there was more functionality for it (handwriting recognition, more app support) I would use it more. Still feels decently polished although I do miss Honeycomb and being able to download those true tablet apps.
I personally think, that if HTC engineered their Flyer tablet with Stantum display it would be a Killer device, a game changer. Seriously - a resistive display, that supports 10-finger multitouch is awesome. Notes, drawing, photo editing, CAD software on small screens, and, if it was used in a smartphone - imagine using your phone in winter without getting your gloves of. Hm, dreams, dreams...
Hi
The old sceeen question.... I presonally own a pair a gloves with special tips for using screens in winter....
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using XDA App
If the performance of the resistive is anything like the old WM phones, then it wouldn't be an improvement. If you want a resistive screen android tablet, there are plenty of Chinese mid-tablets out there.
10 point touch sounds interesting, but why? Some of the app gestures requiring three finger touch is confusing enough.

Galaxy S2, how long will it last??

Hi, I know iv posted a few threads already asking about future proofing of the Galaxy S2 however i have a different question specifically related 2 gaming and game releases and updates not hardware or OS Software.
First question is: after the Galaxy S3 will launch, in other peoples experience with Android, will the games continue 2 be developed for the GS2..aswell as GAME updates, etc? I am fairly new to Android therefore dont know much about it yet or what to expect, but from others' experience, do games still get developed for "older" devices..and if so for how long usually?
Second Question: I always use my GS2 as im a pocket gamer, the big screen is marvelous, always gets me coming back 2 the GS2. Looking at benchmark tests in comparison to iphone 4s, it only has offscreen where the 4S wins hands down... however in Native Resolution(where most ppl play the games...on the phone screen) how much difference is the 4S GPU in terms of performance? Not including offscreen... or does anyone know where to fnd the benchmarks that ARENT offscreen?
the 1 site i found is here and it seems like the GS2 wins in Native Resolution GPU performance:
http://glbenchmark.com/phonedetails.jsp?D=Samsung+GT-i9100+Galaxy+S2&benchmark=glpro21 <---- Galaxy S2
http://glbenchmark.com/phonedetails.jsp?D=Apple+iPhone+4S&benchmark=glpro21 <---- iPhone 4S
I just want to get a bit better understanding of android and my GS2 thats all, thanks
When playing games on iPhone 4S and the Galaxy S2, i actually dont notice too much difference... what would others prefer 2 game on and why?(excluding the fact apple has more games to choose from)??
If gaming is your focus get the iPhone 4s. It has the best GPU atm and games are released on iOS before they get released on Android.
That being said you can use Android to game, too (actually quite well) but the iPhone still wins in that department.
....OH REALLY!!!???
i know the games get released on iOS first... but the small screen is annoying sometimes depending on the game.
I wanted an in depth answer from the benchmarks i posted and all
and btw, gaming is not just my focus, the whole phone is, screen size, how long it'll last, what you are able to do on it, etc... gaming is just my question in focus!

Then your question is much more complicated as all those factors depend on personal perception. As such you should get a hand on both devices (preferrably for a day or longer) and see which one fits your needs.
There's not really THE "in depth answer", but many answers, based on personal opinion.
So all I can offer is my reasons why I went the SGS II route:
a) I love AMOLED
b) I wanted a big screen
c) The reviews I read about it were great
d) It's very light, despite being huge
e) It's so flat
f) More of a general statement about Android: the way to customize the phone I want it, in every single way.
That being said I can see other, huge advantages for the iPhone, too:
a) Retina, it has a higher resolution than the SGS II
b) A big screen is not for everyone as some people prefer smaller phones
c) I love the glass design of the iPhone 4s
d) More games, more apps
e) Strongest GPU on the market, only rivaled by the iPad 2.
Those are my opinions about both phones, based on personal perception (I even bought my girlfriend an iPhone 4s as she has much iTunes music/movies already) and the technical facts.
As I said, that's just my opinion but I hope that you understand now, why I believe, that there is no definite answer.
I think the 2.x.x is a problem, not being optimized for multi core can affect overall performance since the OS mediates all the function calls but i'm not sure.
And being the hardware and software manufacturer always will give Apple some advantage, they can fine tune the software, i honestly think the Android phone lacks this skills.
But AFAIK custom roms can be more optimized than stock ones, i don't know how, but they usually scores better in benchmarks.
For me it's quite simple. Many people tend to enjoy puzzle games and such on their mobiles (e.g. Angry Birds, Cut the rope), because no matter what more complex games are hard to handle on a touchscreen. If you're that kind of person, then the SGS2 is the way to go: i can't see puzzle games becoming too good for this hardware in at least a couple years, plus the AMOLED screen of this device makes cartoonish graphics look really awesome, and the huge sizes deliver you a great experience.
Otherwise, if you want console quality games on your phone, with a complex story, complex controls and amazing 3d graphics (e.g. Shadowgun, Modern Combat 3) then the iPhone is the only way to go: it will be supported for a long time and its hardware will grow older much slowly because of the dedicated development.
Imho at the end of the day complex games will never be very suitable to a mobile device: controls have to be weird and unintuitive, and will take up most of the screen; also, they're not very suitable to be played on the go. Games like Cut the rope for example are a much better option when you are on the go, they will take much less effort and headaches to be played and in the end will give you more fun. All in all mobile games should be those time wasters we can use while we need to wait for the bus or something like that, a fully blown gaming experience feels out of place imho. I've played most of the high end 3d games to date on my device, but if i think about it most of the times i did i was at home on the couch, while instead i hardly touched them while on the go, when simple games like Trial X or Cut the rope are the best way to have fun imho. In the end you gonna do what i did, and realize that high end games are a waste on mobile devices, because they are so complex and involving that the only way to enjoy them is being at home, where you can have your console/gaming pc and have much more fun. Just my 2 cents.
u want gaming get an iphone
u want a bigger screen get sgs2
u want gaming on a big screen
wait for iphone 5
OR
gaming on a portable device
PS vita

etc
You can have an idea looking in the SGS1 forums. Probably when SGS3 be out on the shelves, SGS2 will receive the same treatment SGS1 is receiving since SGS2 was released.
^ Very likely right.
The price we have to pay for this open plattform is that there's a high degree of fragmentation. I wish they would make phones a bit more expensive, but stop releasing them so fast.
Then again:
the advantage of Android is, that we don't have to rely on Samsung at all, when it comes to updates.

Ok, i'll write it down in more simple manner, directly addressing your op:
1)Benchmarks mean NOTHING, especially when comparing 2 completely different platforms, ran in a completely different manner. Anyway, fwiw the gpu in the iPhone is about twice as powerful as the one in the the GS2, so expect that the high end games specifically designed to take advantage of the a5 soc will SUCK on the GS2 simply because there's no comparison. They may be ported to the GS2 because it's a well selling phone, this is very likely to happen, but they'll probably have much less detail/effects and will probably lag and stutter. You can't really see that now, but trust me: in a few months some of those will come out, and you'll know i was right.
Even assuming that the GS2 will be fast enough for those (and it won't) they will still run better on the iPhone, basically because Android games are ports of games which were born with the iPhone hardware in mind.
2)iPhone version will always be the one relased first, and also the one receiving more updates/bugfixes (e.g. the iPhone version of MC2 has more maps in the multiplayer version).
Now i'll also write it in caps so that you won't have more doubts about it: GET THE FREAKING IPHONE.
just like what vnvman said
get an IPHONE !!!!
or
get a 3ds or something

Android also has a much greater market share than IOS (44.8% compared with 27.4%) - its no surprise that the Android Market is set to surpass the Appstore in 2012 as Android IS EVERYWHERE! Developers can earn much more money developing for the majority! .... Apple are seriously worried, releasing this poo iphone and Steve jobs dying aswell. Oh Dear - samsung & google are booming,
Ice cream sandwich is supposed to give our GPU a massive boost, so exciting times.
Apple does seem to get the games first, however as ive said - this is slowly changing, ive also failed to see a game run smoothly on the SGS2.
Browsing, watching movies and playing touch screen games are much better on the bigger screen, with the much better colours. You have to remember, on a 3.5in screen, your fingers dont get any smaller!
I wouldnt go for the iphone, its a poor release from apple, i think its more of a desperate release than anything.
Sure, the screen on the iphone does have a greater resolution, there is no denying this - however, they fail to tell you that this is only noticeable when zooming in 'further than' a double tap zoom. They also fail to mention that the iphone screen as a contrast ratio of 1400:1, the SGS2 is 100000:1 (everyone sees the contrast without zooming in, its the vibrant colours, the depth of colour and the blackest blacks etc)
But half the ram?
No customization?
Smaller screen?
Thicker?
Heavier?
Easily smashed?
No flash still?
No external sd slot?
No hdmi slot?
Underclocked 800mhz cpu?
Smaller battery?
No bluetooth file sharing?
Poor integration to social media?
I could go on...
to me - the SGS2 is a clear choice.

3d intensive high-end game development takes time and I think those games are optimized not the latest but a strong mainstream hardware in mind. I think gs2 have enough juice to deal with any upcoming games for a year or two especially on a 800x480 screen. Iphone pixel count is cca 33% more so needs a 33% stronger gpu for the same performance and cpu performance is inferior. At the end I do not think that in real life gaming a 4s could really show its gpu advantage.

Not a big fan of benchmarks myself, but I have looked into GLBenchmark comparisons between the 4S and the S2. Here are my impressions:
- Both the S2 and 4S are essentially vsync limited for the Egypt and Pro onscreen tests, comparing them therefore is pointless. Although what I would say is it becomes exponentially harder for a framerate to get closer to 60fps when vsync limited, what I mean is it's harder to go from an average of 58fps to 59fps than to go from 57fps to 58fps.
- In the offscreen tests run at 720, you should expect all devices to have a reduced framerate from their native resolution for obvious reasons. The 4S is the only device I have found in the results database (with a lower than 720 native res) where the framerate actually increases. This strikes me as rather suspect and I would suggest that the iOS implementation of GLBenchmark is somewhat ballsed up.
- When I ran a lot of the specialised benchmarks used GLBenchmark what I saw is that actually a number of the tests are vsync capped at 60fps for the S2, so even overclocking the GPU does not increase scores. Somehow the 4S gets around this cap also on the individual tests and so its scores are significantly higher naturally. Furthermore the tests which are capped on the S2 are the ones where it already outscores the 4S. The GPUs on the 4S and S2 are very different and so you would expect them to perform better at different things and this is borne out in the results here.
Essentially what this means is that even with the cross platform nature of GLBenchmark, you still can't really compare the GPUs or 3D performance. I have yet to come across a game that has produced any noticeable framerate drop on the S2 and so it surely fits the purpose at least until the next generation of phones come out. It is only likely to get more buttery smooth under ICS and so I can't see anyone having a reason to complain.
Question boils down to do you want the earlier access to games or do you want the freedom of android? It seems to me we are seeing more simultaneous releases than in the past and the reported numbers from the App Store vs the Android Market are suggesting that Android is catching up fast in revenue terms in which case timing may be a moot point in the near future.

Considering the flyer, few questions first

Hi there, I saw that the flyer has received a big discount in the UK and with the recent HC support it's suddenly become much more enticing. I've a few questions however.
On the whole how well does the flyer function when compared to dual core devices like the tab or xoom? Does sense notably slow down the device or does it integrate nicely? Has there been any word of future upgrades to ICS or will the flyer end with HC? How is the performance in games/cpu and gpu intensive tasks? Any other recommendations/negative points I should be aware of before purchase?
Many thanks
General rule of thumb that I've seen based on benchmarks and user experience is that just because its a single core, doesn't mean it is slower than dual cores. It depends entirely if the apps are written for multiple cores, which many if not mostly all out there right now are still based on single.
The single core on this outperforms the dual core on the kindle, so that's saying something.
If we are talking about seeing a difference between gaming, I doubt the cores are noticeable to the average user, unless you can 'see' the rendering and background process in milliseconds.

The problem with my advice is that the Flyer was the first tablet I'd ever used. So my basis of comparison may be off. Here are just my 'stream of consciousness' thoughts:
1. The integration between the pen and the tablet (which is really what HTC was pushing for) is disappointing. This improves somewhat in honeycomb, because you can now use the pen as you would your finger. However, the pen is, in my opinion, an expensive novelty. There are many problems with Notes and PDF Viewer; for example, many people complain about the lack of control over pen width when annotating in PDF Viewer. Similarly, I find the Notes app disappointing (no way to zoom, limited or no choices over pen tips, etc.). To a certain extent, you can hope for development by others (see the Quill app for example), and by HTC. But I found it ridiculous that this is the best that the programmers and engineers in charge could come up with.
When it comes to pen integration, you can't trust 10 minute YouTube reviews by people who are happy that they can write on the screen; you have to look for real life experience from those who have tried to integrate the pen into their own work.
2. I found the battery life quite weak. Look up some reviews, and you find hugely disparate opinions---some people claim to be able to use the Flyer for a week without recharging while others say you need a daily recharge. Personally, I find that it's a daily recharge. No scientific tests from me, but I'm guessing about 5-6 hours of continuous usage doing low CPU intensive applications like reading PDFs or browsing websites.
3. The camera is bad. Real bad. It's not about the resolution of the camera---it's about the quality of the lens. My Sony k800i cellphone from nearly 6 years back takes better pictures.
4. Development: my understanding is that development is a little bit stagnant, just because it's not a hugely popular device. Time will tell whether these sorts of sales helps the situation.
In the end, the Flyer was my first tablet (which I bought for a good price), and perhaps my expectations were simply a bit too high. I paid $200 for this device, and the truth is, years ago, I bought my Sony PSP for around $130. If I think of it as a toy, something I can play some games on when I'm bored, or check my e-mail when I'm not at my desk, or read PDFs...then it's an acceptable purchase.
However, I do think that the HTC was designed in a rush, and it shows.

Thanks for the quick sum up mate, appreciated!
I too think the pen was majorly overhyped.
It seems to be a key selling point for HTC, but in daily use for me, I couldn't find much use for it!

Keep in mind that the Desire S is 1.0 at stock frequency, so if you overclock the flyer/view you can go to higher frequencies. I believe 1.8ghz is safe from the OC tools out there in development for it right now.
I took the quick opportunity to demo GTA3 running on a stock EVO View 4g. It's USA Sprint ver of the Flyer. So far it's pretty fluid, but I gotta say it's obviously not supported or officially available for our tablets yet.

Yep, but they both have exactly the same CPU chipset (Qualcomm S2 8255)
Just the Flyer has the chip clocked at 1.5Ghz by default, and the Desire S at 1Ghz.
On some kernel to, I can OC to 1.8
I wonder if the extra RAM the Flyer has will be useful in GTA gameplay!

Mine runs GTA3 very smoothly. Controls are a little wonky, but that's a function of the game, not the tablet. Regardless, it's still fun and shows off what this hardware is capable of. I've not encountered any issues with sense slowing down the tablet, and globatron's HC has been quite smooth for me. I'm still pretty torn between launchers when I usually immediately install ADW, if that's any indication of Sense's quality.
I disagree with a lot of TGSM's review. I think with HC that the pen integration is fairly useful, even if imperfect. I've already taken about 8 pages of notes and was quite pleased how quickly I was able to write them. I probably will still use pen/paper for lectures, but book notes and proofs will likely be done on the tablet. And despite the poor integration with pdf apps, it's still way more useful than no stylus for annotation.
Regarding battery life, it seems to be pretty solid. I've only had the tablet for a couple weeks, but I can usually squeeze out 16 hours before worrying about charging. Another poster in this forum showed great results with juicedefender (126 hours in idle, 26 hours awake), and I will likely give that a shot very soon.
Overall, if you can find a flyer for under 300 USD (or below 360ish with a stylus), I would really recommend it. IMO it is the best value for a 7" tablet, and offers a ton of functionality that you'd sacrifice with the NT or Fire. With the tab 7+ at $400, the flyer is damn good deal unless you really value Peel or thinness.
flyer seems plenty fast to me, esp when you use some app to free up ram.
Battery life is good as I only use it couple hours a day on wifi, and end up with 70% left.
You can also overclock it with the custom rom, which im doing right now.

Definitely, especially at that sale price from the other thread (which I assume prompted this thread). Though it is single core, it is still plenty fast. I was completely astounded when using it compared to my OG droid.
Just considering the pricing trends that Samsung and HTC have been following over the past year, I would guess that upcoming tablets like tab 7.7 or any of the quad cores are going to be $450+ at launch. With that you will get faster speed, ips screen, and guaranteed ICS/jellybean, but you will also have to pay a lot more and wait for them to come out.
I would also postulate from how the xoom, nook color, and other functional tablets have maintained their value, that the Flyer will still be worth at least $100-150 in a year. So if something absolutely great does come out around Q3/Q4 2012, you will be able to upgrade for only a small loss.
In any case, there is enough note-annotating and web-browsing functionality in the Flyer that I can easily see myself using it for the next 18 months. It would really take a large advancement in stylus technology to make me want to replace this. However, if you really want cutting edge tech all the time (not unlike a lot of folk on this forum) or don't care for the stylus much, you may want to replace it sooner or just wait for the 7.7.
Thanks for the great responses, they're appreciated Out of interest, has there been any word on an ICS update?

Personally, I love this tablet and I am so glad I got it. The performance easily keeps up with my brothers ASUS Transformer in terms of tasks and the launcher runs way smoother. I love HTC Sense, and really buy into the whole "HTC Ecosystem" with HTCSense.com and all that that stuff. The pen is phenomenal and will be even better with the HC update. I think the HTC customizations make it that much better. The big selling point for me: 7 inch tablet. I want to be able to carry it around with me when I go places. I can't do that with a 10 incher. The battery life is ok for me. I was at 45% last night when I plugged it in after showing it off to family and friends, using it throughout the day sporadically, and watching Netflix once everybody left. If it makes it through the day, the battery is good enough for me. Honestly, the camera doesn't matter to me. It looks pretty darn goofy to take pictures with a tablet in my opinion. I only use the FFC, which is good enough for video calling. I think the stylus was overhyped, but it is still great, and functional enough for me. If someone asked what tablet I recommend, it would be Transformer Prime if you like 10 inches, and you have the $$, or the Flyer if you want a less expensive 7 inch option. This tablet will be outdated within a year or so, but I can easily sell it for $100 ish and then buy the next HTC tablet, if it doesn't cost too much. I am really happy with this tablet overall.

Yea, this thing is really nice with hc and the stylus. I ended up stuck at the hospital for four hours yesterday, and I used it to draw up some plans for my dorm room when I go back to school, did some emailing, surfed the web, and played some games. For $200, I couldn't be happier. It even fits nicely in my coat pocket. I plan to use it to replace my textbooks, and I feel like it will work very well for that.
The stylus does add functionality. I was never interested in a tablet, because I have a netbook, but when I saw the flyer I changed my mind. If you plan to play heavy games, I don't really think a tablet is the way to go anyway, but HTC has always pushed functionality, and the flyer is obviously marketed towards students and business people, so if you are one of those this is a really nice option.

Recommendation from Desire HD to Lumia

Hi to all,
Sorry about the question. Just want some opinion and i dont mean to promote/demote android or wp7.
I have desire HD, but mine having problem with random reboot, poor battery life(after overnight charge can last 7am-2pm)...thinking on getting a phone with better batt life with heavy use on whatsapps and browsing. No gaming or other funny2 apps on android
I should have buy another better android phone but now i already having other android devices (samsung plus 7.0 and Noontec android HD player). Now thinking on getting Lumia 800,do it have a good batt life?
Some say yes, some say no. I found mine decent enough, and I used it pretty heavily.
I did this switch about a week ago, having had a negative experience introducing my Desire HD to a marble floor at high velocity...
Basically I love the phone - the facebook/twitter integration is fantastic.
Probably worth saying though that the battery life isn't fantastic. Just about on a par with my Desire HD, though I do find the indicator to be somewhat overly cautious - 50% charge remaining looks more like 30 on the little display (reached this at 4pm today) ...
I use social sites, push gmail, spotify streaming (1hr), 10 SMS and approx 1 hr calls plus other minor stuff and generally get about 16 hours before charging. I suspect if you use it more you will get less. not a problem for me as it sits on the charger at work, but may be more relevant if you can't do that ...
The only thing I miss from my Desire HD is the Internet Sharing functionality, which is there in WP7.5, just waiting on Nokia to update it ...
The size and display are beautiful - I carry an iPad 2 for things that benefit from a larger screen, but am currently finding myself using the phone more for emails etc.
I heard a lot of negativity around the door covering the USB port, but I quite like it ....
You might want to see what happens with the Lumia 900 as well - that may have a bigger battery and better battery life (or it may not).

As a Lumia 800 user, I find the switch to be very painful and counter-productive. Here are some of the issues that I have encountered:
Extremely poor battery life. I cannot stress this enough. On normal usage (non-smartphone activities), it is fine. But try using Nokia Maps for 15 minutes or so and you will see the battery drain very, very quickly. And Nokia Maps is not even close to what Google Maps can do in terms of features.
No multi-tasking. Imagine this: you are in the middle of an action game when you accidentally press the Search button. Boom! The search interface pops up. Your game? Gone.
STILL NO USB OR WIFI TETHERING/HOTSPOT!!! Aarrrggghhh!!! It's 2012, not 2002.
Over-zealous OS lockdown. No third party dialer (those on the market aren't real dialer replacements). No folders for apps. No USB mass storage (fortunately, you can enable this through a simple registry tweak).
Very expensive games (compared to iOS or Android) with generally lower quality graphics.
Having said all this, your requirements may be very different from mine. It does have a nice & responsive UI, very good social network integration, nice MS Office hub and a nice email application. Some people swear by Lumia 800.

You will definitely like the Lumia 800 if you're coming from a Desire HD (I owned and hated that phone XD) the newer models of the Lumia 800 hasn't had any problems with battery life. For whatsapp and browsing, it's fine. Gaming drains as usual. See if there's anyway to lend one. To see how battery works out for you.
Nice point of view, yes, I don't do game on small device, even on tab I found it hard. But no tethering? How about near future, since my laptop will share internet from phone. I just want a simple phone with social n web browse. Thanks all

Not all games/apps can handle that gracefully. Fusion:Sentient would simply restart the game while Wordament would reset the score (when "switched out" at certain point).

Ahhh...ok, I have another solution, when you purchase your phone, download the app Skydrive, it's Microsoft's cloud connected to your Hotmail account, so you can upload your photos there and access them through your email account, that way you don't have to install anything and it's easier for you to upload pictures to that and load them on to your phone when you get home to your PC vice-versa.
Bought a lumia Hope its fullfil my needs...but look like it will...need to test batt life

Hi everybody,
I kind of in the same situation. I am currently an Android user, and I really like it, but two things bother me:
- OS Fragmentation, I hate having to install custom roms every time because the official update never comes, and manufacturers usually leave 6 months old devices forgotten.
- Another thing, I've noticed that WP usually have "less powerful" hardware than Android, there is no big race for dual or quad cores... That tells me that the OS doesn't need that much power to run smoothly.
Said that, i have a few questions. What is the expected longevity for this phone? Is it expected to receive the next OS update? and finally, what are the main drawbacks you find for the OS and are they expected to be solved in future updates?
Thanks in advance and cheers

Microsoft and Nokia have been doing quite well as far as OS and firmware updates are concerned. Sure there are lots of country variants for the firmware and they may not be released at the same time, but the wait is nowhere near as long as what Android users typically have to endure.
Also, OS updates seem to be quite independent of firmware updates (correct me if I'm wrong). At least this is the case for Lumia 800. So that makes it a lot easier for Microsoft to push new OS updates to WP users directly.
As for the hardware, you are correct. WP (up until now) does not really require multi-core CPU in order to run smoothly. Lumia 800 is packed with a single-core 1.4GHz processor, so it is quite a powerful phone. My only gripe is the under-powered GPU for gaming. 3D games look less appealing compared to their Android or iOS counterparts.
As for the drawbacks, I have already listed quite a few in the previous page.
For me I think I was happier with android, but the installation of new roms was a great pleasure for me, not a drawback.
The OS runs smooth as anything on its 1.4ghz core and I never use my phone for 3d gaming so I really have no need for a faster proc.
The biggest drawback for me are the following.
-Some of the 'simplification' of the OS is mid-boggling. If you turn down the volume because its late at night, or your music is too loud expect EVERYTHING on your phone to have a lower volume, the ringtone, the alarm, the games, the notifications etc. I have been late for work 3 times now because I had dropped the volume of my alert tones late at night and I subsequently had no alarm.
-The apps are lacking but expanding all the time, sometimes I get a bit frustrated by the 'no results' when searching for a slightly more obscure app feature. Android just has everything.
-The navigation is a long way off being as good as google navigation but is decent all the same, but NO WAY POINTS (stupidity!). That being said I still think google navigation is still a way off the market leaders like tomtom.
Basically for a day to day phone and for its core features, it is excellent. But dont expect to be able to customise anything other than your home tiles (sometimes). If an OS 'feature' could be considered to confuse a simpleton then you can bet your arse it wont be there.

That's a load of rubbish. Long-press the back button and the task manager appears.
I've just migrated from Android to WP7 on the Lumia and am much happier. Now I'm not messing about flashing ICS roms every week I trust my phone with my data.

When I played NFS Underground an accidently pressed the Search button, when going back to the game it didn't continue. It started all over. So no not a load of rubbish. Only native apps has continue on "multi-task"
It's not only native apps, third party ones can do it, as long as they're coded for it.
