[Q] Which custom rom should I choose? - Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

I must admit, I am a complete noob when it comes both to linux, android and smartphones. I know a great deal about computers, but only recently bought the X10 mini pro, since it wasn't that expensive and I wanted a qwerty-keyboard.
Anyway, the reason I have decided to install a custom rom is mainly the fact that SE have confirmed that they will not give X10 mini/mini pro Froyo, so therefore I now understand I have to start using custom roms.
The current wishes I have for installing a custom 2.1 rom is the following:
-Apps2SD
-Multitouch
-Change themes
I have currently decided to go for the iridium rom. Is that a good decition? I've read lots about "JiT" but I don't exactly know what it is. For example, can I install JIT, then install a custom rom (such as iridium) and JIT will still be "installed" and working?
Many of the tutorials here are great, in the way that it makes noobs like me able to actually install custom roms, however, the tutorials are alot like:
STEP 1) Pick a ftl/i20x model and install with flash tool.
STEP 2) Use one of the following builds: 2.1.A.x353.3531.43 (I'm like... WTF IS FTL?! WHAT BUILD SHOULD I CHOOSE?? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?!?!? :/) lol,

i would say try till you find one you like. just because you like the looks of the iridium rom you should try them all before you make your descion. also experiment a bit since that does not hurt to try.

Well whats holding me back is the simple fact I can't get xrecovery working. I made another post for that tho, anyone of you want to try and assisst me?

hey.
what sort of problem do you have?
installing xrecovery?

Seemingly all successful installs. But then I shut down mobile, turn it back on, start hammering the back-button but nothing happens

When R U starting to press back?
I start right after I feel the vibration (a little b4 the sony ericsson logo appears)
And remember that it is the first logo that they're talking about! The one woth only text! ;D

Trust me.. When I say I have tried for hours getting xrecovery to work, that includes rebooting 20-30 times, each time pressing the back-button from vibration and probably like 3 times per second, until phone is fully booted. No results. Is there no other way to check if xrecovery actually IS installed?

Ok, I've seen some problems with the placing of the three files...
Where have U placed dem?
You need to COPY them from sdcard til SYSTEM, Then MOVE to system/bin.
That step is very important to make it work.. if you've just copied them from sdcard til system/bin , that could be the problem.. ?

EDIT: Good Luck C:

I did nothing of the sort, i just used bin4rys 'all in one' tool from PC to install xrecovery, then also the xrecoveery-fix.apk i think also bin4rys production. It said it installs xrec

Thanks alot!
But now the strangest thing happened... after my phone crashed and I repaired it, I log into market with my google account, and all applications (such as "Root Explorer") that I've paid for in the past, won't get downloaded. It just starts download but nothing happens, download freezes at: "downloading".
Any ideas what's causing this?

JiT is enabled as part of installing Iridium ROM.

Alright, I did a factory reset to fix the problem. With market. Followed indtructions precisely, three times now...xrecovery never starts up.
Anything else I need to configure? I notice that when i reboot, go /system/bin the xrecovery.tar file is gone.
EDIT: No it is still there, with the same permissions.
It doesn't seem like anyone else have any issues running xrecovery, so I don't get it!!
Sent from my U20i using XDA App

When I try to install xrecovery with the aapk-installer, the three icons just turn red. Judging from others who had this happen, it was due to an outdated busybox version.
Anyway, I ran Titanium Backup to update busybox, but that only got me 1.15. How can i get 1.18? It is not on the market

I dont think it is due to busy box version. i have busy box 1.15.3, and i have x recovery and custom rom CM 6.3.2.1 installed.
Are you moving the file and then copying them to them to the system folder? and is the root explorer in rw.
Thread which i followed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878426
peace.

I move files to /system/. Change permittion. Copy to /system/bin/. Reboot. Hammer back button, nothing.
The unified xrecovery-apk installer gives a clue I think, cause the install fails. I just wantt to find out why. I am rooted. I do mount r/w..
Sent from my U20i using XDA App

You need to copy them THEN move them, from your post above you are moving them then copying. Its important to do it the right way round.

Now I copied them to /system/. Change permittions. MOVE them to /system/bin/. Still no luck.
I am confused about all the talk about Busybox version, instructions about "DO NOT UPDATE BUSYBOX ONCE YOU'VE INSTALLED XRECOVERY!!" etc. but if I had done that wrong, xrecovery should just cause the phone to freeze at the SE-logo, right?
Atm, nothing at all happens at the SE-logo.
I think I'm going to use SEUS to wipe it all clean again, then just root it with superoneclick from PC, download Root Explorer, and try this again. My build atm is: 2.1.1.A.0.6 btw.

Thank you all so much for the help! I got it working now Had to go back to factory settings, then just root with superoneclick (NOT try to install xrecovery) then I installed xrecovery manually, after installing busybox through Titanium Backup.
Haha, now the only issue is that I can't find the flashtool from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825664 I made afew posts here and there asking if someone could re-upload or post a mirror two days ago, but no replies. Does anyone have the GUI-version of flashtool?
EDIT: Nevermind. An angel uploaded a mirror of that too! =) Thanks everyone, now I will try my luck with the iridum rom!

app2sd not working with new update

i installed the new update(fresh install) and root, xrecovery are working properly. then i installed app2sd(i have ext2 partition) i got installed but still apps are getiing installed in internal memory only. Titanium backup shows the sd ext2 partition but its not working. there is system/sd/apps folder but no apps in there. only few apps in appback folder which were installed before enabling app2sd.
does anybody have any solution?
Could this be the reason to why my phone now is nearly dead. I had app2sd installed before i made the update a couple of hours ago. I havent started up since then, it is in a loop with the first screen Sony Ericsson, then the color splash and then the logo together with the text Sony Ericsson... over and over. I have tried to soft reset, have tried to connect to SEUS but nothing seems to work.

I have now made the flashing and everything seemed to turn out fine. Flashtool behaved just as in tutorial.
I unplug and power on and what happens?
Same loop as before the flashing... like this:
Start up with Sony Ericsson, then color splash and finally the logo screen, and then it goes on same way over and over...
BUT
15 minutes later i tried to flash once more, this time i did NOT add the dualtouch in the bundle and this time it worked out fine!! Now only the hard work to get the phone like it was before this happened...
Once again, thank you ^Shader^

I couldn't agree more with hansip87.. it will mean you lose the apps that are already installed on your SD card but its a better over all solution..

My advice is to keep trying.. if SEUS aint working then Flashtool is your best chance.. it might take a few tries.. double check the .sin files are in the right place (Firmware file in flashtool) make sure you have the right firmware for your device and keep trying..
also.. if its a mini Pro then take the battery out for a few seconds.. if its a mini then press the power and center button at the same time for a reset.. try and try again!!
I guess keep trying is my main point.. you will get it eventually (then reformat your apps2SD partition and use Link2SD instead
Kiwi
edit....
(if your still having problems with flashtool after multiple attempts pm me and I can send you the original (non GUI) version of flashtool when I get home from work, perhaps it might work better) I have never had a problem with the old version, just copy the .sin files to the firmware folder open the flashtool app and follow the instructions (making sure you select wipe USER data when prompted)

you tried to add dual touch?? looking at the instructions in the link you followed I am not surprised you got a bit confused.. that tutorial was only for big X10.. which is why it mentioned Dual touch.. if I had knowen I would have just pointed you to easier mini instructions.
Glad you got it sorted in the end

Yes, i got very confused when it didn't work when i added dual touch, but no problems as i sorted it out and made a new try without it.
Now my mini works better than ever. But it took a lot of sweat before i got it back to the way i want it.
i have the updated my mini pro to the latest build and installed app2sd / dc2sd .. seems to work without any problem.
Is this update newer than 2.0.2.A.0.24 ?
And what's new in 2.1.1.A.0.6 update?
Any improvement?
@ donetus, Are you using the existing rooting method or some patching is required to do the rooting after the new update?

[Q] Latest stable ROM for mini pro?

Hi all,
I have a mini pro/U20i running Eclair, specs as follows;
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband: M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404006
Kernel: 2.6.29
Build no: 2.0.A.0.504
Rooted, xrecovery installed
I'm looking to upgrade to the latest stable android version available for my phone, but must admit the in-depth tech talk does go over my head a little when looking at the ROM threads. I have enough tech savvy to be able to flash etc, but not too great with the programming speak.
I'd like to ensure that bluetooth, wireless, root, gprs etc are all 100% working on the ROM I upgrade to. Not bothered about radio or anything you can get an alternative of from the market.
From what I've seen gingerbread is available but not yet 100% functional, and I know there are stable Froyo versions available however the requirements state the baseband as above, but ending in 53404015 is required.
Is there considerable risk flashing a ROM if my baseband is slightly different?
I'm particularly looking for stable multitouch too, but the thread I read says manual edit of .sh and .prop files must be done - and I don't know how to do this
Dev and user opinions would be muchly appreciated.
Hi you will need the newer baseband just update with seus then you will need to reroot and install xrecovery again then once you have done that go to this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059361 ) its the most stable I think and dual touch is included so no messing around
Hope this helps you
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
just use the flasher and baseband files from the baseband thread. much faster and easier than using seus and rooting again. just put the rom you want on with xrec, pull the battery out, flash, and youre done! shouldnt take more than 10 minutes once you know what youre doing!
For me, using SEUS is safer, even if I have to root and install xRecovery again.
I you want the most stable ROM with all functions working, you have to choose CM6-MiniCM hybrid noOC from Slade.
I'm using that ROM since he released it and never had a reboot, and everything is working.
If you have stock rom, you should format SD card.

yeah using SEUS is better... and you can reflash after you update using it....
after root and xrec, just make a backup on xrec so you can reflash to 2.1 back... and dont waste time on reflash+root+xrec again.... i did that save lots of time
ps: make sure full wipe+dalvic clear before restore backup... ^^

Yeah, I did it too, but never needed that backup I flashed with SEUS last, when I first updated to slade's ROM

Cyanogen Froyo CM6-Latest (based on MiniCM/CM6v2) - v2.0 + DualTouch is the most stable ROM for me. Just flash using SEUS or flasher to get the required baseband.
I recommend using the flasher because it helps you understand the flashing process. Just follow the tutorial.
Thanks for all your help guys, that's helped me out no end
I am now the proud owner of an x10mp android 2.2.1 (went with Slade's ROM - big thumbs up, it's beautiful!!)
I have one final question.. when I installed the last ROM I had, I used flashtool, so doing it with xrec was a new experience for me... I did notice that before it installed the rom, it said 'formatting /system' or words to this effect.
I need to install the two hotfixes that are posted with the rom - the drain and browser ones... do I package the files within these zips into an update.zip and run again from xrec or can I transfer the updated system files just using root explorer? I'm worried that xrec will take the update.zip as a full rom and will delete the contents of my system folder - please reassure me this isn't the case and it will just update with newer files!
MANY thanks again for your help and advice!

Just use each from xrec, it will replace some file but it won't format your system, only the big release file does that (100MB++).

It depends what formatted, deleted or owerwrited on update script. Don't worry, slade knows what he's doing
Anyway DON'T TRY TO FORMAT YOUR SYSTEM WITHOUT INSTALLING NEW ROM!!!
Just always follow install notes and everything will be fine.

Right then, an update (excuse the pun!)
I followed SEUS to get the xx 4015 baseband
I flashed Slade's noOC rom and then hotfixes using xrecovery
I now have a happy 2.2.1 android mini pro with multitouch!
At first, it was a little slow and I had a few blank screens and FCs....
Screen brightness was very low even when I was actively using the phone, so I unchecked the auto display option and set a brightness I'm happy with. Sorted!
With Titanium I restored my backups, including my wifi connections. Saves having to re-enter all the passwords right? Wrong!
I had a number of connection issues. Data was very slow, to slow to even register my google account on market. Wifi wouldn't load market or bring up anything in the browser...
When I did establish a fast enough data connection, market was completely out of sync with my phone apps.
Turns out the data connection just needed to 'warm up' along with the new android system. As for the wifi, I removed all my connections with the 'forget' option, and manually scanned and entered the passwords again. Now my wifi flies
So all in all, a very smooth upgrade process, a couple of hiccups with the data/wifi and brightness that have been ironed out, and now I am loving my new android again. The multitouch is very slick and having superuser, jit and xrec preinstalled is just brilliant! Games are lag free too which makes a big difference (yep, I'm an Angry Bird club member)
Think I've made my iphone user hubby a bit jealous. I like to remind him every now and then that apple have him by the balls, and he has to buy a whole new phone to do any update such as the one I've just done (again )
The battery drains a little quicker than on the previous rom, but I expect that will settle down after a few days. One thing I have noticed is that I'm repeatedly ending apps with ATK that I hadn't even opened - on my last rom I'd never see anything that I hadn't opened myself.
An example being, just opened ATK and I have the following running;
APN OnOff
Gmail
Maps
None of these I've opened since I last ran ATK Other repeat offenders are Browser, google search and camera,
Any ideas? WhatsApp used to open randomly until I moved it to the SD card. It's behaving itself now.
Don't need to use taskkillers in 2.2.1, android handles battery quite efficiently.
Battery increase is due to overclocking and because it's a custom rom.
Hope that helps.

My battery life has stabilised now. Took phone off charge about 8.30 am and now, 1.30pm it's at 83%, so can't complain
I find apps such as maps and google voice/search do drain the memory quite a bit so still prefer to use atk. Just opened atk to find I have;
maps
handcent
apn OnOff
gmail
google voice
ROM manager (I've never opened this since installing the rom)
calendar
camera
all running and memory at 41M. Killed apps and memory now at 71M
Is there a way to stop these apps from randomly running? Apart from a calendar alert for today, I haven't manually opened anything from the list
cheers,
K
Sorry for ignorance:
Can I flash a rom and do all the nec. stuff from Ubuntu? Or will I need Window$ to flash a mini pro?

It's normal to have applications taking up memory. It is so that it will be speedy in opening those apps so try not to use a taskkiller. The only time these idle apps use battery is when there is CPU usage: so check with your spare parts. If they don't use CPU, no need to kill.
If you're insistent that the apps are frustratingly persistent, then freeze the app using titanium backup. Note that freezing certain system apps may cause problems eg freeze google talk and market won't work.
Try at your own risk.

Please fix this or show me how to fix myself
Thanks.
First..try to fix permissions in xrecovery-advanced options! Anyway are you talking about time scape call extension?

I did as you said. Seem to be it's fixed. About the call log FC, I saw it appeared 2 times once reboot, like "com.android.calllogevent" ( I don't remember exactly)
EDIT: here is it. com.sonyericsson.eventstream.alllogplugin
Ok so..try this way:
-open market and install "unistaller for root" free app
-open it and forget to allow root access
-search timescape call log extension (i don't remember if this is the exactly name..but it's much similar) and unistall it! (Backup the apk to be safe)
After that you should be free from fc's!

don't restore data on apps after flashing ROM if you can. sometimes flashing different version of dialer storage can do this.

Will try it. See this will work.

[Software] [Win/Linux] [MiniPro] Easy&Quick CWM Installer from Computer

Only for Mini Pro
This software is just perfect. Everyone uses really complicated ways to install CWM. By now, for me, the easiest way was to install xRecovery from D4's app (Which he left behind, I think it's much better than the new one) and then install MiniCM6 from Slade, which has CWM and replaces xRecovery, and just then flash any ROM or something else. Other methods include mounting r/w, change permissions, phone apps that work for a few ones and not for the rest... I found the solution.
This is a really ignored thread on the Mini Pro Develpoment, and I think it should be on the very top of everything, because with a LOT of research for many time, I haven't ever see this one. It was as easy as downloading it and opening it, then just pressing some keys and voila! It's done, with fully functional 3.2.0.0 r5 CWM. The only requirments are:
-That you have a Windows/Linux PC (Depends on which file you download)
-Have an USB Cable (C'mon...)
-Have a Rooted Stock ROM phone. If you are looking for installing CWM, you are probably on Stock ROM. Just Root it with SuperOneClick (Included in the download) with a single click (REALLY). A magic software too.
Thanks, rect2409. Your software is really exceptional, such a sinple thing as installing CWM from Stock ROM is like a great mission, but you solved that problem for us. I hope this post helps you to get your app more popular, and for you people I hope this post helps you to get to know this great app that saved me a LOT of time.

I DON'T have anything to do with this software. I'm just promoting it because I thought it is so unknown. All credits go to the user rect2409 and whoever he may give credits on his thread.

[Q] wifi tethering

Im trying to setup wifi tethering on the x10mp (phone 3G->wifi to a laptop).
I've tried Barnacle (laptop failed to connect to phone), and "wifi tether for root users" (two apps), but both gave an error message that the kernel is missing some components.
has anyone got some wifi tethering app to work on x10mp? and if so, which one and how?
TIA

If you are on stock SE firmware, even if you have rooted your phone, Wifi tethering wont work for you, as the stock firmware does'nt support tethering. Here is a link with a list of tutorials and custom ROMs (I think all ROMs from android 2.3 support tethering):
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588192
The easiest way would be to install xrecovery on your stock kernel (you'll find one under "stock kernel based custom ROMs) and then flash a GingerBread(2.3) ROM via xrecovery.
Please press thanks if I helped .
Tnx.
Im using the stock SE ROM.
Kernel 2.6.29
Firmware 2.1-update1
Any chance I could get wifi tethering working w/o installing a custom ROM?

Sorry, bro, but I've never heard of anyone gettin tethering to work on SE stock firmware, but custom roms, especially on GB, are really worth it. Why don't you give it a try ?

Well, these show that people (allegedley) got wifi tethering on the x10mp:

http://www.android-trick.com/2011/11/root-xperia-x10-mini-with-wifi.html
Im afraid of bricking my phone if I try to flash a different ROM, as Ive never done this before.

Don't be afraid of flashing Roms in stock kernel, its simplicity itself. If you have already rooted your phone, here's a quick how-to:
1.Download stericson's busybox from the market & install newest version (currently 1.20.2, I think)
2.Download the zip file in this post
3.Download script manager from the market.
4. Extract the files onto your sdcard so that you find the files "chargemon, busybox, xrecovery.tar, readme.txt, installer" in sdcard/download/xrecovery.
5.Open script manager, give superuser permissions (tick 'browse as root' on first startup), navigate to the folder you extracted and run 'installer' as root (tip on the superuser symbol on the top left corner. When activated, it should be green).
6.Download the Rom you want to flash onto your sdcard, a link you'll find in my earlier post(only choose from stock kernel based roms)
7.Reboot.
8. When the SE logo appears, press back button quickly several times. You will boot into xrecovery.
9.Make a backup via xrecovery.
10.wipe data via xrecovery and install your downloaded rom, surprise, via xrecovery.
11.reboot&enjoy!

PS: Sorry, forgot to upload the zip file, will upload tomorrow, as it's getting late now .

Looking forward to the files you've mentioned.
1. Can I create a backup of the current kernel & ROM (the SE stock ones which the phone arrived with)?
In case something breaks during the process, I could hopefully revert to these.
2. Can I get the wifi tethering functionality without updating the kernel, only by installing a new ROM?
When I tried the "wifi tether for root users" app it showed an error message that the kernel is missing some components.
Xrecovery
So, here is the zip.
PS: All credits go to the guys in the following link (quangnhut123), he uploaded the files, I only wrote the installer script .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950324
Change in step 4:
4. Extract the files onto your sdcard so that you find the files "chargemon, busybox, xrecovery.tar, readme.txt, installer" in sdcard/download/xrecovery.
Yes, you are able to restore your previous system via an xrecovery backup.
Please press thanks if this worked for you. If it didn´t please tell me what went wrong, I will fix asap.
NOTE: I havn't tested this yet, because I havn't had time to reflash & root my X10 MP. As said above, if it doesn't work, I will fix .
When I used the stock ROM, I used brancle for wifi tethering, It worked. Unfortunately, I do not remeber the exact settings. But I'm sure, It works.

Thanks Kilory.
What about my question regarding the kernel? as I mentioned, when I tried the other tethering app, the error it displayed was that the kernel is missing some components. so If I use the stock kernel, and only install a new ROM, will this still allow wifi tethering, or do I need to flash a new kernell as well?

Well, I don't think your kernel is missing components, that would
1. Disprove the links in your post and
2. Disprove what tommy posted.
Also, I'm pretty sure that when I was on Minicm7Pro (with stock kernel), I had wifi tethering.
PS.: Bro, if you are using your browser for posting and you are logged in, there's a "Thanks"-button on the bottom left of every post, or if you are using the android app, just click on a post and the option thanks (danke) will appear. Pressing this will for one thing be easier than writing thanks in a new post, and also, many people like it when their thanks meter goes up and will thank you in return.
PPS.: If you alredy know all that and I've just made a fool of myself, sorry . Besides, I'm just testing the method I described myself, I'll give you feedback as soon as everything works .

OK.
What ROM do u recommend getting (I'm staying with the stock SE kernel)?
I want something super stable, and for which everything works.

First of all, did the script work (yet)? Have you tried it yet? Sorry, I havn't tested yet, but I will do so today.
Secondly, MiniCM7pro always worked well for me, but if you like the stock SE style, try SonyStyle by the same developer.

I'll wait until you check everything is working.

Actually, I remembered, that i can simply see the settings in my wife's mini, which is with the stock ROM, and uses Brancle. I just tried it, works flawlessly. The phone is only rooted, nothing more. Here are the settings:
SSID - elka
BSSID - empty
Wireless encyption - five low-case letters, no numbers, no symbols, for example - abcde, ASCII encoding
Channel - 6
Custom Wifi Ad-hoc - none
Skip wpa_supplicnat - not checked
Auto Associate - not checked
Accsess control - not checked
New client actions - Notify (checked), Sound - Play a ringtone, Light - empty, Allow - empty
Local mode - checked,
DHCP - Gw - 192.168.5.1, Mask - 255.255.255.0, First Host - 100, Lease time - 1200 sec, DNS1 and 2 - empty
NAT - leave everything default
WAN- rmnet0
LAN - empty
What do you mean when you say "laptop failed to connect to phone" - tries, but can't get address, or nothing happens? If nothing happens, try to press the "Associate" button.
I remember, that there was something strange with the password - make it as simple as you can. If it is not working, try temporarily to disable encryption.
I cannot tell the version of Brancle I am using, but Market doesn't offer me an update, so it must the latest one, at least for the stock x10 mini with stock ROM. If you know how to check it - tell me, i will do it.
And something else - check the security settings of the laptop - are the Ad-Hoc networks and WEP encryption allowed? Brancle makes Ad-hoc only, not infrastructural.
Good luck!
EDIT/
As I see from market, the version of Brancle is 0.6.7 (evo)

Tnx Tomny.
I set the same settings as u did, still no luck.
The barnacle log shows: WIFI: failed to reassociate
Im using linux (debian), with network manager, which should be able to connect to an adhoc network,
any ideas?
TIA
Update:
It works for only a single time. The gnome network manager defined the wireless network as "infrastructre", and I changed it to "adhoc".
It connected once, but Im not being able to reconnect again now. ;-(
any suggestions?
Try to connect some other device, to see whether the problem is in the device, or in the Mini/Brancle. What do you mean, saying "not being able to reconnect"? - You cannot see network, you see it, but nothing happens when trying to connect, you can try to connect, but cannot aquire address (ie stuck on "connecting...")

well, the log on barnacle shows "failed to reassociate", but not much else.
how did u define the network on the pc/laptop? any special settings there besides being an "adhoc"?
Could you please check what is the kernel version & OS build number on ur x10mp? (they are listed under settings, in one of the submenus there).
TIA
