[Q] Should I use my Vibrant without a case/cover? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my Vibrant on a case since day one, I bought that black gel case at T-Mobile but I didn't like it because it was to fat so I bought another cool one.
Should I not use it without a case?
Anyone using it witout a case?
Will it scratch easily?

I use it without a case, it works fine. No scratches or anything.

Same here, although obviously you've to handle it more carefully and pay attention not to place it on rough surfaces when doing so.

I don't know if this is help, i bought a rubber case from ebay and my phone always on my pocket while I am at work. So far doesn't have scratches or anything. So yes with case.

Otterbox and invisible shield best combination to protect your phone.

I use it without a case, but I have a realook screen protector on it. I toss it around so the back cover and some of the chrome is a bit scuffed, but the screen is of course perfect.

Hi there.
I don't use a case, but I do have a screen protector on both sides of my vibrant. I don't like the looks after putting the case on, yet I am worried I might get it scratched or damaged. So, as a solution, I decided to get an expensive, good quality protector. Works perfectly haha =D

see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=965283

i got ghost armor on my screen. i bought a plastic case on ebay for like $10 and its awesome. i hate gel cases cuz they just become giant lint traps eventually. it was well worth the money for the case. its still really slim and pretty sturdy (i've dropped it a few times)
edit: its similar to this http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-Hard-Cove...165091?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4aa86b0223

I use a Trident case on my Vibrant. Its similar to otterbox, and comes with a built in screen protector (which I took off, it wasn't very effective in keeping dust out). Itbis a very solid case, I would recommend it if you are looking for a case.

I'm using a rubber case with no screen protector. The phone is in my pocket a lot and even without a screen protector, the screen is as good as new. I've dropped my phone once from about 2ft and i think the rubber case cushioned the blow quite a bit.
I'd go with a case if you can live with the bulkiness.

I like a gel case because it doesn't add a lot of bulk and it gives a little cushion if you drop it. I've seen the screen on a Vibrant shatter from being dropped from just a couple of feet.

I believe that a case is a no go, the gorilla glass is extra strong, a case would only make your phone bigger and heavier. Use a screen protector if you want to feel safe, or if you seriously want a case, buy one from zagg.

Why risk it without a case? Who here has never dropped their cell phone?

I use Zagg invisible shelf on the back, and nothing on the screen. No scratches yet, been 7 months. Also, coming from the G1, I have been using the pouch that came with my G1, and the Vibrant fits perfectly. You can get the pouch from Amazon for $5 with free shipping last I checked (OEM too, not some cheap knock off). Best $5 you'll spend on protecting your phone IMHO.

Going without a case is definitely more desirable. Cases are pretty bulky and take away from the thinness of the phone. However, I wouldn't worry too much about scratches without a case. I don't really care about scratches and scuffs, thats what invisible shields are for.
One awkward angle drop without a case and your $400 phone is toast. Thats the ONLY reason I use a case on any of my phones. With a case you are SO much more likely to recover from a drop. Either way, its your phone do what you please!

Leather case as well, plus it feels so sexy

I'll chime in to pitch the barely there case - link here. It was my answer to wanting to ditch a case, but being OCD about damaging the phone.
I too had the tmobile rubber case at the onset, but eventually got tired of the extra bulk. I'm loving my combination of a real look screen protector and a barely there case...it's probably as close to a naked phone as you can get while still giving it some protection. Plus, the case helps me find the power button on the side, which becomes curiously elusive when I'm not sporting a case.

Zagg has a full body cover made from screen protector stuff. Adds almost zero bulk but it can be a pain to install sometimes.

[Q] How protected is your vibrant?

I personally love the feel of my vibrant without the silicon casing on but unfortunately, I have to go with it whenever I leave the house to protect it from knicks and knacks (plus I always seem to drop my phone...)
I have a screen protector (REALOOK) and a TPU case. I too like the way the phone feels and looks without a case but yea, it needs to be protected. My old G1 got bang up pretty bad by not using protection... LOL...
I've had my vibrant in a case since day one but still have scratches all over the body. I think the shiny plastic material is just scratch prone. If I had to do over I would have tried some of the clear body armor type product. Definitely love the bare feel, may just go without a case and hope replacement parts become available.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I have the stealthguards screen protector and battery cover protector. Both are mainly on there just for weight and grip and the front is also on to make my vibrant have a flush front.
Silicone = ****
polyurethane Is The Way To Go, Alot More Protective And A Better Fit For Your Phone
I rock mine naked. I had a hard clear case for my G1, but it really didn't do a whole lot of good and my screen didn't get scratched at all. The Vibrant has gorilla glass and you get a 2nd back cover out of the box so I decided to go without.
I've got a realook screen protector and the tmobile gel case.
My battery cover AND the faux metal bezel are pretty scratched up. Been in the case since day one, so I suspect the gel case scratches it. Go figure.
I honestly didn't like the bare feel. Too slippery and small, so now I have a rubber case in it. Fits like a glove and grips better while still sliding out of the pocket without sticking. And of course a screen protector. I kept one on my g1 since day one. Its beaten to hell, the lip part is cracked and the sdcard unmounts if you apply pressure but the screen is flawless lol

I use a Casemate Tough Case and have been using this style of case on all my phones for years. Usually Otterbox, but they took too long this time around so I gave the Casemate a try. I never drop my phone, but I have two kids under 5, so the cases are definitely tested from time to time. There are no better cases if you want real protection, IMO.

I've got the hard Body Glove case with the black rubberized back. I haven't tried any other cases because I really like this one. The phone just felt too fragile to me without a case, this gives it a little bulk and makes it feel a little more substantial.
No screen protector. I haven't seen the need for one. I'm not super careful with it either and will carry it in a pocket with keys and loose change pretty often. Been doing this for 2 months and no scratches on my screen. The screen is definitely pretty tough.
this is a $500 phone, and it's slippery. I drop **** all the time so i got the silicon case. it looks lumpy, but it's worth it.

Couldn't have said it better. I use the BG case, and love it -- the look, the kickstand, the added bulk. (The "naked" (ugh) phone is too thin to hold comfortably on a call; and others have said, it's slippery as hell.
I utilized the stealthguard front and back. So its practically naked.. but not naked

I'm amazed by the durability of the screen. I don't make it a habit of putting it in my pocket with anything inside, but when I have and cringed as I pulled it out expecting scratches, to my surprise no scratches.
As a rule, the harder the cover material, the more the shock will be transferred directly to the phone. The same for the sticker types which are more for protection against scratches.
I ended up buying a cover from tmo because the phone felt a little slippery by itself. Its made of silicone and think enough to absord some of the impact if it is dropped and us les likely to slip out of your hand.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
I bought the tmo black silicone case. I really like it because it adds grip and gives the phone a more solid, quality feel. One thing I've noticed is if you take the back cover plate off too much...it gets loose and creaky. They really should have gone with the slide lock type.

I use a RealLook screen protector and one of these clear, hard cases:
http://www.buy.com/pr/product.aspx?sku=217139826
Super inexpensive (bought 2, 1 extra to have on-hand)! Been using clear hard cases like these since my MyTouch3G and I've dropped it (the MT3G) several times onto concrete without a single scratch or damage to the phone. The case took the brunt of the impact. Put a very small crack in it, but nothing else. Ended up replacing it anyway, but that was enough to make me buy them for the Vibrant now. I just don't get that sense of protection from a semi-thin silicone sleeve. Sort of like gluing a bunch of balloons to the exterior of your car and thinking it's going to protect you in a head-on collision. Just not buying it...

No case, just an invisible shield. Works for me.
Invisible Shield + Seidio Innocase Surface 2 combo.
Not my favorite case I've ever had for a phone, but its growing on me.
The case part I like just fine, its the holster that I'm adjusting to.
Ive got a double case from verizon and a screen protector from them too. I have to say that both of them are great, the case makes the phone feel like a tank and the screen protector doesn't distort the screen at all.
Ice got to say that I an very happy with both of them and out was a decent value, $50 for both and a car charger (which is in my dodge charger, how ironic )
Phone is naked for now... trying to decide on what I want to do still... It's rooted with S-OFF though... this is my first android phone and i love it so far..

I had my Eris completely naked for over a year and only one small scratch on the screen- kept in my pocket 90% of the time. Not sure if the Tbolt has the same glass. Assume yes or something similar.
Worried about scratching the glass so I just installed a PhantomSkinz screen protector and white Chromatics film on the back. Looks nice but we'll see how it holds up (corner peel?).
I never use a screen protector, i dont shove my phone in my jeans pocket. I might have to do what i did to my incredibles silicone case....cut out room for the extended battery. I think this time im going to dremel out a plastic or the hard rubber case to fit this beast. For now im just using my gps neoprene case and it works ok for the time being.
I've got a black silicon case on mine but I hate it. I ordered a Seidio hardcover to replace it. The silicon one gets all linty and stuff, and it's very hard to get in and out of pockets without it falling of. I don't have a screen protector either.

Phone cases?

Just a quick survey of you fascinate users:
Do any of you use cases? I have been for the life of my phone, but I really like how it feels with out one.
For those of you without, how has the build of your phone stood up? Any damage?
I do have the Seidio case and holster for mine. I switch back and forth between using it and not. I only use the holster for when I mountain bike to protect the screen though. I don't have any major damage besides scratches on the battery cover so far.
I use a tpu skin case I got at the Verizon store for like 15 bucks....no screen protector....
It kept wanting to slide outta my hand so I got the case for grippiness and it doesn't add much thickness

I was using a solid plaid case, but the case itself damaged the battery cover. I recommend getting a soft case if possible. I'm currently using Samsung black wallet case; great design and comfort
I don't use a case at all cause I don't like the bulk... I've had the phone for over a year and no problems yet.

Over a year huh? So you were fortunate enough to get your hands on one 6 months before it was released? Props to you on that...
No case here. I use a ZaggSkin on the back and that's it... Minimal bulk, battery door protected, with a little extra grip to boot.
I use the Verizon wireless shell/holster combo. Texturized shell goes on the back of the phone, phone slides into the holster with the shell on, completely protected. And the inside of the holster is felt so the screen doesn't get scratched. Keeps the phone protected, but adds minimal thickness.
Otterbox, commuter. Looks nice gives the phone a good feel without adding too much weight.

Seidio case here. Without the case, the phone seems slightly too thin for me to hold easily so I prefer the extra bulk.
No case/holster here. I dont like the added bulk of one, screen protectors are a tad redundant considering our gorilla glass screens, and any damage to the battery cover can easily be remedied by buying a new one. Im usually good about protecting my phone, but the dings and nicks are definitely starting to add up.

I highly recommend any silicon case.
It might be little bulk to you, but it saved me from drop.
I dropped my SF screen facing down from 3ft and I had just Case on, but i picked it up and it didn't even have 1 little scratch.
TPU case. No screen protection. Gives me the grip needed to keep from dropping with little bulk. removes in .5 seconds to pull batt if I need to.

TC tpu case, 3 bucks on Amazon, USB and headphone Jack holes trimmed wide to accommodate a variety of plugs. armorsuit screen protector (think that was about 3 bucks too). Had both since phone was a week old, roughly October 10 or so. Minimal increase in phone size, with decent protection. I work in construction, so naked isn't a safe option for my phone...

you can buy cases that are real slim and don't really add much to the phone. it still protects it. highly recommended!
I'm a huge fan of this. It's more expensive than a lot of cases, but you're buying two cases: a TPU (I think? some sort of rubberish material) skin, and a hard plastic shock-resistant outer shell. It also comes with two screen protectors, and has all of the cutouts (as well as incorporating dust covers for the speakers) for this phone. It's incredibly durable, and at $30 it's a pretty good value if you dig it.
http://www.amazon.com/Trident-AMS-S...TCHG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1334204736&sr=8-2
Oh, and if you don't care for black, it comes in four other colors - which also determines the color of the underlying soft case.
I hate cases. Was shattering the glass on my previous iPhones constantly because of it and the fact that I am clumsy as sh$t. That being said I bought the case mate barely there case and it is great. I highly recommend it for being slim and protected. Really doesnt add bulk at all and have dropped this phone many times without a scratch. Good buy I suggest it for anyone who doesn't like bulky cases

I love Zagg's full body cases. If you don't want a bulky case zagg is the best cuz its really like a full body screen protector. They're expensive but they replace them without a problem if you have any problems
Otterbox can be a bit bulky, but it's tired and true (I'm using the Commuter version). I like having a phone with a bit more heft to it so I know nothing will happen when I inevitably drop it. Cut outs are pretty much perfect, with flaps to cover ports and keep out dust. Corners can attract lint, and my biggest gripe with it would be how hard it is to get on and off (it's a problem for taking out SIM card), but I never have cause to take it off very often anyway. I really like it thought, there's my 2 cents.
I'm using the otterbox commuter. I love it!!

Was just curious to know, is anyone out there rocking their Note 2 in its birthday suit? If so, any scratches yet? I myself have had a screen protector on since day 1 of owning mine whereas my friends that also have it are all naked. Just curious to know if anyone has any serious scratches of their own.

I agree 100%
Another area of concern was the use of the S Pen on the screen. If that would over the course of its life span leave any surface scratches as well.

I have had a screen protector from day one but I went weeks without a case. Just put the Samsung protective cover on and it is surprisingly thin and light.

I had mine naked for a few months and did see a few tiny scratches appear so covered up. First with a Copter screen protector which sucked!! It made the screen look like ****e. Small text was impossible to read and the S-Pen marked it. I later opted for a very cheap harder plastic no-name protector which is excellent. I have plans to buy a 10 pack and change every other month or so.
The way I see it you preserve the second-hand value if the screen is scratch free. If in two years time you want to sell it for a good price you just need to invest in a new flip-cover remove the screen protector and it's almost like new.
100% all natural. No screen protector. No case. I like the feel and look without bulky protection. I allow the Gorilla Glass 2 to do its thing.
Afterall, its a phone; its going to get used, scratched and dinged. I want to enjoy the complete phone experience in the meanwhile.
Have you seen those cars that had the bra on the front? People removed them only to find out that their paint was now two-toned, and dirt and debris had etched the paint along the edge of the bra, not to mention having a red sports car with a black mask on.
I was naked on every smart phone I've had up until the Note 2. I've always gotten scratches on every other phone no matter how careful I was.
I also have a small hard case on it. I would love to run naked on that too but the smooth back is just begging to slip out of my hand. Plus the case makes it feel more solid and reduces the creeks and growns coming from the crappy plastic Samsung insists on using.

I would be concerned if a plastic pen scratched glass.
In other words, it won't.
The glass with the oleophobic coating is at least 9 mohs.
Without the coating, its still 6.5-ish.
Plastic is around 3 or 4.
No screen protector here, I adsolutely hate screen protectors. I think they ruin the clarity of the screen. But I do have one of those folio style cases so the screen still gets covered when its not in use.

I've been using the Seidio active case and like it, no screen protector. Just ordered a flygrip and will probably rock it naked with that.
Like others have said I won't use a screen protector as I trust the screen plus hate the feel and affect on clarity.
I'm using a cheap tpu case partly for peace of mind of a little protection and partly because it has a built in kickstand that isn't very intrusive and has been pretty handy to have.
I have mine naked, but the first few days of owning it the phone fell upside down on the wooden floor so now I have 2-3 large scratches on the screen from grains of sand
Same set up I run on every phone I've owned:
Verizon slim hard kickstand case, no belt clip
Cheap eBay matte screen protector
I keep my phone in my pocket so I need a slim case. Every since the T-Bolt, a kickstand is a must for me. I absolutely hate clear screen protectors since it always feels like I'm dragging my finger across the screen rather than sliding it. I ended up buying the $12 pack at Big Red since my phone arrived before my China protectors. The cheap matte ones look great, don't smudge, and make the screen silky smooth.

Screen protector I got from Verizon and an all white Androidified case from Cruzerlite. My hands are a little dry so carrying the phone naked (the phone) is slippery in my hands. The case gives me a nice grip to hold on to the phone.

Oops, sorry for the sideways photo.
My typical progression is: get a new phone. Think "I need to protect this thing" and get a case. Rock case for a week or 2 and then hate the extra bulk. Take off case and love the natural feel of the phone.
I followed suit with this phone. Had the flip case ordered before the phone was out. Got the phone and immediately popped the case on. Rocked it for 2 weeks and took it off.
However, I have actually put the case back on because I found usefulness besides the protection. With the phone's size, the case flap provides more area to maneuver it. It also prevents accidental home button presses when the phone is in my pocket.
