Help for New ATRIX/Android User - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the Android scene and moved from iphone to symbian and now to Android. Hoping for some help with this issue as it is a unique one.
First off, I have an ATRIX that was originally released for developers only. I got lucky and one of my dad's friend gave me the phone. The issue is that aside from lower storage (only 10GB available) and crappy battery, it is not the final firmware with Android Marketplace that came out with the final release.
Is there anyway I can flash the final released firmware? Settings > About Phone > Update states that I have the most up to date firmware. Also entering recovery mode and restoring the phone does not cure this problem.
-I do have it rooted and it is able to install software outside the market app (of which i currently do not have).
Thanks in advance for your help.

Just bumping this to see if anyone's got an idea or a hint.

are you sure you have the dev version? 10gb storage is normal, the rest is used for the OS. i have 10.71gb available to me.
you bad battery is most likely from being unfamiliar with android, if you have your emails, calendar, contacts ect...syncing all the time then the phone is constantly downloading data and killing your battery. you can try freezing those apps if you do not use them, you will notice a huge increase in battery life.

Hi Neotekz,
I'm quite positive I have the dev version. I was the percipient of it back in November 2010. I really didn't even know I had an Atrix in my possession until late January.
As for the battery, I think stock comes 1800maH, mine is 1500maH. I have disabled pretty much everything for auto data transfers. The battery itself may just be bad.
My main concern is; however, that I cannot get Android Marketplace on it.

You could probably just get the apk for the market.
And why take a modified phone like this as your first android phone?
Never live in the past but always learn from it.

heres the link for market apk from androidpolice

You have a Dev unit....does it have an unsigned boot loader.....?

I never had an Android phone, just wanted to see how it was and learn new things (including dev). Plus if I damage it or screw it up, it was a throw away/resell as it, kind of a deal. Got it for free, so why not right?

As of right now, I'm going to say no, but where can I look in the phone to confirm?

PROS:
- Full control of your phone
- More apps available in Marketplace
- Remove unwanted apps
- Ability to overclock/underclock
- Tether your cell data (as a wifi hotspot or USB)
- Applications to SD Card (free up memory)
- Overall performance of phone improvement
CONS:
NON....
No OTA update once custom ROMS are available but that doesn't matter once rooted because you're gonna want to install custom ROMS created by the DEV anyway.
Well yeah, the reason why i thought i would ever regret it is because im new to this kind of stuff, so once i do it. im not going to know what to do with it. Im a newb i guess lol. Once i do it i cant go back correct?
I've noticed a problem getting protected apps from the android store. On my Rogers X10a since rooting, most things are there but a few things aren't. Hoping to solve it soon, but some apps may not be available.

You can definitely go back to stock anytime you want. For example, I wanted to see the new ota update for rogers so I rebranded my phone back to its original firmware, and updated, now I don't have root but in about 30 minutes I'll have it again. This process can be done unlimited times.
Just a suggestion, before you try rooting it spend an evening or two doing some research and getting familiarized with the tools.
From what you are saying I would suggest waiting until there is something that you really want working on your phone that is limited by the stock rom.
Hey mate How can we install programes directely to SD Card when its rooted or is it possible to move installed applications to SD Card?

Do you mind directing me to the Link for the original firmware for Rogers. I'm having trouble finding it in these forums. I can only seem to find Decrypted x10a ROMS and I have no idea what those are. I only want it for warranty purposes.

Use the r1f014 in the decrypted roms. That one is stock rogers branded or you can repair your phone with pc companion and it will save a backup to your hard drive. Then if you need to go back to stock you repair with pcc. I didnt check but im willing to bet the new rogers fw will be there too.

Was thinking about doing this but I think the benefit of Root just outweighs being on Stock especially because of the unnecessary cr-APPS that SE installed. For me, I don't use Moxier, Timescape, etc... and they take up so much resources or space that I could use for some of more useful apps. (SetCPU, Titanium Backup, etc).

What kind of tools are you refering to? Just in a general idea so i dont spend a week doing research instead of a day or two lol.
And just a general question, if debranding a phone is a good thing to do... is there a reason why Ericsson didnt do it in the first place? Excuse my incompetence with rooting.
oh, someone answered the question already, sorry =p

I think the only con is the root access increase the security treat, just like the jailbreak iPhone.
Other than this, root is great, and useful

[SOLVED] HTC HD2 or Motorola Atrix - which to keep?

Okay, so I signed up for a T-Mobile contract here in the UK the other day, and the free phone on the contract was going to be a Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo. I didn't want this, so I bought a used HTC HD2, and planned to sell the Neo in brand new condition.
But I got a call from T-Mobile today telling me that the Neo has been discontinued, and that they could offer me a Motorola Atrix instead for the same price.
So basically, the HD2 arrives tomorrow, and the Atrix arrives on Monday, but I'm not sure which to keep. I was looking forward to trying out WP7 on the HD2, along with various different Android versions, and being able to compare them all. But at the same time, the Atrix gives me a faster CPU and GPU, more RAM, more internal storage, a higher resolution (but smaller) display, and other cool things. 4G doesn't make a difference since I don't think there are any 4G networks in the UK right now.
Anyway, how easy is it to root and flash custom ROMs with the Atrix (UK version, just called the Atrix instead of the Atrix 4G, if that makes a difference)? I'd quite like to just run a version of Gingerbread as close to stock as possible, because Moto Blur doesn't look great. Also, are there Sense ROMs for the Atrix?
What would you pick - the more flexible HD2 with the slightly larger screen (I love typing on my dad's Galaxy SII, one of the reasons I went for the HD2) or the faster and newer Atrix?
Thanks
As much as I respect and favor the HD2 (and HTC in general), I would have to go with the Atrix. Rooting the Atrix is pretty simple. See here: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-root-motorola-atrix-4g-on-android-2-3-4-hktw/ . It's still your decision on which device you want. If you still want to experiment, then go with the HD2. If you want a faster device (like for gaming purposes [although the HD2 does play games pretty well]), then go for the Atrix.

Hm, it's proving a really difficult decision to make. Of course, I could just sell both the phones and buy something else.
Are there decent ROMs available for the Atrix which provide a more stock Android experience? Also, does it matter that it's not the US AT&T Atrix 4G and rather the UK/European Atrix model? Not sure if that makes a difference with this phone.
Thanks for your reply
It does matter if it's the USA/UK version for roms. It's said that all roms made for the UK Orange Atrix can work for the UK T-mobile one. You could try this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242721 .

Oh man, sometimes Android development seems so complicated. It took my a lot of reading to understand everything I needed to know about my G1. Seeing as I've got to make a fairly prompt decision, is there any chance you could summarise it a bit? I know the information will be available elsewhere on the forums but I don't have much time to read it.
What I'm really looking for is a fairly unmodified version of Gingerbread, with pretty much everything working (doubt I'll use the fingerprint scanner though LOL). But I want WiFi, 3G, GPS, the camera, etc. working. The dock functions aren't a biggie either.
Anyway, is there a simple, fairly basic ROM out there that would work for my UK version? Because I found this for the HD2 and I thought it looked awesome.
Thanks
I don't know of any like that for the Atrix. The HD2 has far more roms than the Atrix, with many more customizations, etc. Looks like this could make your choice easier .

Hm. I should be getting the HD2 tomorrow, and since it's already used I won't have an issue with opening it up and playing around with it over the weekend. So I guess I can form an opinion over the weekend about that, and if I decide that I'd have no use for the extra features of the Atrix, I can sell it once it arrives.
What about this though? Not sure if it would be AT&T only.
EDIT: Wait, that's not actually Gingerbread. Damn.

I got an HD2 used last week for an amazing price. I wanted to try out WP7's Mango release but not lose my data plan by putting my SIM into an AT&T branded device (which happened once and I got fixed).
WP7 works VERY well on the HD2, with the exceptions of extremely poor battery life and that WP7 hijacks the SD card and renders it unusable for other future uses. There is an app that can be sideloaded that will release the SD card though.
Anyway, I played with WP7 for bit and fell in love with it. I couldn't handle the short battery life (tried all of the tricks), so I freed up my SD card and installed CM7's latest Gingerbread 2.3.6. It works fantastically, and with decent battery life.
Where I'm going with this? The HD2 is not an AT&T device. If you have a TMO HD2 and want to unlock it for use on AT&T, you will not be able to use 3G. The two carriers operate on different UMTS bandwidths. That's a bummer.
So, keep that in mind about the HD2. If you don't get a model (non TMOU-US) that has the right 3G bands, you'll miss out on high speed data.
I'm in the process of putting HD2 up for sale and am going to try to get my hands on an ATRIX that I can root and tether with at 4G speeds.

I think it's a bit different over here in terms of which 3G bandwidths are used etc. but I'm not sure entirely. If the HD2 doesn't work on 3G then I'll have to find another phone.
I've received it now, anyway. So far it seems awesome - the hardware is excellent, the OS is not, but that will be changed soon enough.

YP-G70 US Stock Rooted Rom dump

This was originally an opinion post that turned in to more.. I am leaving the thread intact and the stock rooted rom dump can be found in post #20

I picked up a couple of the 5" refurb players for my kids (ages 6&7) for christmas (both are YP-G70CW). I am actually quite impressed with this device, but thats not why i am here.
I plan on rooting them so i can do a hidden install of Cerebrus just in case they lose them or they get stolen. Anyway, since these will be going to my kids, i dont want to heavily mod them, i want them to be reliable.
This is where the opinions come in, do i leave the stock rom on there or is there another reliable rom that would be super kid friendly that has no problems?

i dont think that any anti theft is that helpful due to the lack of mobile data.
unless a thief is dumb enough to connect to their own wifi, there is no way for the galaxy player to report its location
I fully agree with the above comments.
I have a 5.0 for more than one year and now a Nexus 7. if I take at side the device speed (for heavy games) The 5.0 is in my view the best staple in today market. Especially in term of portabilty!
good choice

You can flash a cerebrus zip to the system and hide it from the app drawer. This also keeps it from being removed from a factory reset. If someone stole, or "found it" then they would have to be at least smart enough to flash different firmware, or manually remove it. I would rather have little protection than none at all. And if it fails me then i am only out the $140 per device that i spent.

I have N7, N4, HTC Vivid, an older LG Optimus, a few chinese android knock offs, etc... my kids love playing with my N7 but i wanted to get them something a little more portable that they could easily take back to their mom's house. I came across these refurbed players and knew immediately that it would be perfect for them.
Just like any big kid with a new toy, i couldn't wait to get them and try them out (well, i have to test them, they are refurbs)... And i have to say that i actually really like this device. I kinda want one for myself.
I use chip rom and everything works(its based on GB ) ..i use mine on 1.5 ghz with undervolted FQ and i tell you (at least on chip rom) most apps works faster then on nexus 7..i put side by side nexus 7 and GP5 and press buttons on same time ..in 90% SG5 would open faster or finish faster.

So i still didn't get this... I plugged the one in to my machine with windows booted up and Kies told me there was an update. So i figured i would grab the update and dump that, then also dump my other one without the update and give you guys both.......
Well this turned out to not be an easy process. Kies did something and F'd up the drivers. I spent a good hour (uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, hard reset phone, etc) with it trying to make it see the phone again to no avail. So this morning i booted linux and tried to get a dump and ran out of time. I am off work tomorrow so i should have more time.

I would recommended giving up Kies all together because it's more problematic then it's worth. You could install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11633550 (this) and it'll fix your issue. Sorry for the issues.

yep, i saw that earlier.. i will give it a shot. No worries about the issues, I have been so far up HTC the last few years i need some different exposure.
The one is in the process of uploading now.. I still have to update it yet and get the dump of that one also. But i am going to bed, i have a sick kid to deal with now (guess i had the flu and not food poisoning, lol). I will update with a download link after i get up. Which should be in a less than 5 hours.

This was my was my first attempt at this. I am not a Samsung person. So here you go
Model Number: YP-G70
Firmware Version : 2.3.5
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-G70UEKI8-CL566269 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UEKI8
Download here
md5 d3253616e8509e001dd59491a2352bf0
*since this was my first attempt, if you have a way to test it, then please do as i dont want to mess up your device. But i followed the instructions and encountered no errors to achieve an Odin flashable TAR file, it was just over 300MB, It zipped down to 183. SO file size to me seems to be normal.
Many many thanks to hanthesolo for pointing me in the right direction!

[Q] Question before I sell my phone

So I've currently got CleanROM 1.5 [email protected] Odex on this thing and need to sell to a friend. He would prefer it stay rooted.
Must I revert to Stock Rooted before Verizon will let him activate or can I just wipe and let him turn it on?
Thanks in advance.

Judging by your signature you are not new to flashing roms. It doesn't matter what you have installed for activation. They can't see if you have the factory ROM or flashed another, just wipe and give to him. I'm sure a simple search would have gotten you your answer.

Not new, correct. I've never actually gotten rid of/sold/traded any of my legacy phones though so better safe than sorry. I did perform a couple of searches but obviously not extensive. Thanks for the response.

I usually hold onto my phones too, even after they sat for about a year, I've always been the last owner. But no problem, if worse comes to worst, he'll prolly just ask you to put the stock ROM back on if he doesn't like the features with the custom one.

with verizon there really is no need to even go to the store if he has a 4g phone already. If he takes his sim card out and installs it the phone then it transfers his number

[Q] i9305 4.3 to 4.4? Is it possible?

Is it possible to update to CM11 nightly (or any other 4.4 roms... I'm not familiar with the scene) from 4.3 stock?
I did install KNOX, and then removed it. And then the Samsung service reflashed the rom again. So I don't know about it anymore. Didn't install it since then.
My story:
As many of you already did, I also installed the new update. Read below if you are interested (but you probably know all this anyway.)
So. A few days ago Google+ started to eat up my battery. I disabled it in the Application Manager and did not have the updates installed either. But it just started. My usual battery life dropped to only a couple of hours at max.
So I fired up Google and it said I have to install the updates. So I did.
Nothing changed. Then I went into Google+, signed in, and then signed out.
Nothing changed.
So all in all, I have a piece of crappy brick that I can't use anymore.
Bit of a rant: You gotta love this. You buy an overpriced product and they f... you over a thousand times. App makers, Samsung (4.3 crapdate), and EVEN Google. Then why the hell would I even want Android ever again? Seriously. If I would have to buy a phone now, I would pick an iPhone, no matter how much it costs more. This is just unjustifiable. "Hey customer, thanks for buying our product. Now let us make it all crap." ... WHY?
So yeah. Now I have no choice but to lose warranty (which I already used a few times because this is REALLY a crap quality phone). Not that HTC One X was any better, it had a faulty GPU/motherboard like 4 times. (Thanks Nvidia!) ... Sorry guys, I'm just infuriated.
Wish I could just change the phone down. I was thinking about Sony, but if Google can buttrape you anytime, why bother? No guarantee I can just fix it on Sony either.
CM10 is also fine
As I read the nightly can disable all GSM related operations (call/sms), so CM10 is also fine.
I just want to fix my battery life and have a stable phone again.

you should download your firmware from here
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9305&pcode=0#firmware
wipe everything then go into download mode
Use Odin http://www.android.gs/download-odin-3-07/
and after you flash this, do a factory reset within the phone or through its recovery
I just did this with my wife's 9305 and its running like a champ

Thanks for the quick reply.
As I said my phone runs the 4.3 firmware now without any issue.
Except the 4.3 slow encryption and the huge battery drain. The phone got reset like 3-5 times in the past few weeks too.
So now I wonder if I can just install CM10 from 4.3.
But I need some confirmation as I know you cannot downgrade 4.3 for example. (Due to KNOX or whatever.)
Yeah should be no problem. My wife's battery drain happened too. I found the problem was with the SD card. I formatted it with the phone and it seems to be as good as it was on 4.12

I've got no SD card.
Thanks for the replies too, but I still want a 100% CONFIRMATION that I can downgrade.
Having a brick is still worse than having like a few hours long battery life.

Look you can go from any version of cm back to stock. CM doesn't change your boot loader or your modem. The only time your stuck on a version of android is when it comes to stock. Like as a note 3 users we are stuck on KitKat because they updated our bootlaoder. Cm based Roms it doesn't matter.
And you should get an SD card to hold your back ups just in case.
Also if someone helps you on xda it's kind of nice to hit the thanks button. It allow others to see that their comment was useful.
Good luck.
BTW if your new to rooted and ROM installing I suggest reading through the Dev section for the i9305.
Also google your issue word for word and there are tons of android forums out there which may help you.
A lot of times if you open a thread that has been answered a lot they will ignore it or throw words you won't like your way.
So good luck

I know you cannot downgrade from 4.3, nor use Triangle Away (due to KNOX).
Does this affect the move to CM? Or not?

has nothing to do with cm and triangle away will restore your binary count not warranty bit but I am not sure how knox effects the s3 as it does with the note 3
either way it never hurts to try things

Yeah if I'm not going to get an answer in a few hours I'll give it a go. It's a brick anyway, heh.
Just did my wife's i9305 today. Moving to cm/omni shouldn't be an issue, however be warned you lose a lot of features like HDMI out and the camera doesn't work as well. I just put the galaxy project ROM on there as the i9305 has the extra GB of ram which keeps stock nice and smooth, also you can debloat if the need be. And if you run into camera issues like I did simply flash stock kernel then reflash rom. Honestly unless you prefer KitKat its a waste of the extra ram your device has as most of it simply will never get used.
Also with wanam xposed you can customize everything! Can't do that with an iPhone. Sorry to hear you have had a bad run but while Samsung's software isn't exactly great the hardware is beast and once you learn how to configure it and unlock its full potential you will see you made the right choice.
i9300 | temasek 4.4.2 | boeffla kernel
Thanks for your reply!
- How worse will the camera get?
- What other important features you know? (HDMI does not really matter to me.)
I do use it a lot, so I don't want to lose everything. (Only use simple picture/HDR modes tho.)
Tried again every kind of combination with Google+ and it's still eating my battery like crazy.
I mean... what the hell is the "Disable" for then? It "almost disables" the app or what? lol.

Topic solved!
Installed CM without any problem. Everything worked flawless.
Now I have a fast (MUCH faster) phone. And all those god-tier features. Holy sh*t I love my phone now.
(I hate you Samsung.)
