[Q] Still have GPS problems. No help from Samsung - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm having an ongoing problem with my Vibrant not locking onto satellites. I've tried every trick, mod and software update I could find to no avail. After visiting Samsung's web site I saw that every time somebody asked a question about the GPS not working, Samsung's response was that it's a hardware problem and to send the phone in for repair. So I did and this is what happened......
1. I call and give them the exact problem I'm having. That the phone will not see let alone lock onto a real satellite. She emails me a 2day shipping label. I taped a note to my phone also detailing the problem for the tech to see.
2. I get an email a week later saying that they're shipping my phone back to me and this is what they did (Copied from the actual email).....
Original Problem:
Technical Inquiry
GPS
Acquiring Location
Problem found:
DROP CALLS
SW,PRL,OTSL RESET
Solution:
Passed All Functional Testing
After Google'ing what SW,PRL,OTSL RESET meant and finding out that it's just software resets, I called Samsung support back. I asked them if and why the hardware wasn't repaired and reminded them that their web site, in many places says that it's a hardware problem and to send it in for repair and that my phone NEVER DROPPED CALLS. She states that it tested ok and to wait and see. She then tells me that if I receive the phone and still have the same problem, they will find another solution so I wouldn't have to send my phone in again.
3. I received the phone last night. I put my sim and battery back in and turn on the phone. I did nothing but add my gmail account back in so I can download GPSTEST from the Marketplace. After doing so I walked outside and sure enough, after 10 minutes, no satellites. Nothing. This morning I called Samsung and to make a long story short, after talking to level three support, they tell me all they can do is have me send the phone back again.
Here's my problem with Samsung.... I followed their direction and sent my phone in for repair. I twice gave them the EXACT problem I was having. Their own website states that there is a HARDWARE problem. So instead of fixing the exact problem, they find a totally different problem to "fix" instead. They never touched the actual hardware or fixed my problem. They won't take responsibility for their error and find a solution that works. They tell me they don't replace phones, only repair them so they can't send me another phone. They won't even send me a overnight shipping label so I will only be without my phone for 5 days instead of 10. The only solution to my frustration he can offer was to give me an address to send a letter of complaint.
I'm done with Samsung. Is there anybody who can offer a solution to my GPS problem. From what I can tell, it is a hardware problem. Are there any fixes out there or do I just have to get another phone (It'll never be another Samsung)?
Also.. What other recourse with Samsung do I have? It doesn't sit well with me that I just have to accept their excuses and policies that do more for them than the customer.
Thanks

I had the same issue and I just had them send me a replacement. Just go through the live chat on your account, choose the warranty/exchange option, and then tell the rep that you tried all the fixes and updates and nothing works. It took about 15 minutes before the person said they would replace mine. Also, I would talk like you know more about the phone than they do.

Hope Samsung didn't break your gps connector tab
Gps is a hardware issue on vibrant and the best you can get is 25 feet accuracy and 30 sec lock times mostly.
In your case, you do need a replacement that can at least do this much

Why didnt you simply call tmobile and have it swapped?

Did you try the self hardware fix in this forum? Worked wonders for me and many others.

Was this with Samsung or T-mobile?
I had much the same experience with Samsung as cconnell11. I last talked with Samsung a month before 2.2 was available. They assured me that 2.2 would fix it, and there was no point sending it in since they didn't have a repair procedure for it and it would come back the same way it was. I asked what would happen if 2.2 didn't fix it. They said all I could do would be to send a complaint letter.
Naturally 2.2 didn't fix the GPS. I'm thinking about what to do next.

I tried the hardware fix today and I still do not see a big improvement. I have gotten mine down as low as 6 meters but no less. My old MT3G would get really accurate compared to the Vibrant. I have more issues with Wifi than I think I do GPS. I adjusted both antennas this morning but my wifi still isn't stellar. I wish Samsung and T-Mobile would just send you a replacement phone up front and repair your phone and re-use it as a replacement after they repair it. The whole 2 day shipping thing sucks when you need your phone for work.

Wow I only get 10m accuracy most of the times. I know other phones can get upto 6 ~ 9 feet

You can check here http://www.n2yo.com/whats-up/?c=20 to see what satellites are in your view.
If you get a different set you will have zero chance of locking on. If you show no sat numbers initially you are getting no or incorrect GPS assist to give you at least almanac info. If that is case try GPSrestore.
Do you get any grey bars on GPS test app? They need to be greater then 30 db/No to get initial data lock. It appears that Broadcomm GPS firmware does not report any sat lock until at least 3 satellites are locked enabling a 2D fix.
The only significant HW issue reported is the antenna contact. If for some reason the GPS TCXO calibration value has been lost it could take a very long time to get a lock, maybe never. Once it does it will establish a new TCXO calibration value which is then saved for future use. GPSrestore may retrieve factory firmware stored TCXO calibration.
GPSstatus does a network request for assist data that should get you at least correct sats to look for. Use WiFi if you have it with GPSstatus. Just use GPSstatus for assist download, then close and open GPS test.

I have not tried any of the hardware fixes (yet), but have tried the software reset from Samsung with not much change. When I notice that my GPS is having a hard time locking, I turn off Wifi and it locks almost instantly. I can then turn Wifi back on and it seems to keep a lock.
As an example, I can have a lock/see of 0/2 in "GPS Status" app for minutes. I turn off wifi, wait about a minute and get have 5/12. After turning wifi back on (after lock), I still have 5/12.
By comparison, my Galaxy Tab quickly goest to 7/10 with or without Wifi on.
Accuracy (according to Google Maps) is 10m on the Vibrant and 4m on the Tab.
I am thinking that my new golf GPS app is not going to be too useful with only a 10m accuracy.

thank me later
buy a bluetooth gps receiver such as globalsat bt-359 or any sirfIII or better. Next download bluetooth gps provider from the app market. let their powers combine and you vibrant may become a fully functional gps with the purchase of onboard gps vavigation. hehe

My solution
Since originally posting this I've tried the bending the pins up hardware fix to no avail. If I'm outside with a clear sky GPS status shows several satellites and after about 5 minutes will lock onto maybe three or four of them with about 10m accuracy. Maintaining that lock though is tricky. If I get into the car, it looses it. If I turn the phone upside down and have the bottom face the sky I get a lock on 7-10 satellites with about 7m accuracy. Either way it isn't good enough and I found a new problem. Google Maps just doesn't work with the default settings. It locks the phone up no matter what updates you've done. I fixed that though by changing the Operation Mode to MS Based and the Server FQDN Type to AUTO Config. Now it doesn't lock up and works fine with the exception of the GPS problem. I looked at the Samsung car cradle and noticed that it holds the phone sideways so the internal GPS antenna is facing the sky. This should work great but I don't want it attached to my windshield.
My main problem is that I want to use the phone for Geocaching like I did with my LG Optimus. That was a great phone and the GPS was accurate to 5m consistently. So I went ahead a bought a bluetooth GPS receiver. After a lot of research I decided that the Gosget SB-369 was the best option and it was only $30.00 online. This thing is great. I get a good steady lock on 7-10 satellites with 3m accuracy. This is perfect for Geocaching and was better than my Magellan when it worked right (don't buy anything Magellan). It has a hole in it and is small and light enough to be worn around your neck with a lanyard while Geocaching. You could also just put it in your pocket. It's antenna isn't a standard patch type. It's internal, but round and omni-directional and maintains the same lock no matter what way it's facing. I would recommend this to anyone who needs good accuracy for things like golfing and Geocaching.
I'm going to use this as a solution. I get great accuracy that I need at the expense of having another little gadget to carry.

With the results of the vote in the GPS (possible issue) thread running at 30% functionality, left me asking what are the other 70% of us doing wrong?
I thought this would be an opportunity to gather data for analysis. It is not a chat thread or for discussion on causes, or trouble shooting.
Just maybe something well show up, as it appears Asus doesn’t have a clue and keep blaming the case. While the case does seem to be attenuating the signal compared to my Samsung Galaxy S2 it doesn’t explain the hit and miss nature of the TF201. And we all have the same back panel on our TF201’s.
On one occasion with the TF201 sitting on a park bench found 9 Satellites and used 5. (Using GPS version V 6.8.13) Without touching a thing they all disappeared. Then nothing!
The best I can do now is 1 Satellite found.
Test procedure:
Outdoors only in a wide open space.
Use “GPS Test” from The Market.
Update AGPS then turn Wi-Fi off.
If all reports could be posted in the following format.
1. Model:
2. Build:
3. GPS Version:
4. Satellite’s in view:
5. Satellite’s In use:
6. Time to first fix:
7. Has the GPS worked in previous builds of ICS
8. Did GPS work in Honeycomb
9. First 8 digits of serial No
Just maybe a pattern will emerge.
Thanks all.

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish here.
There isn't a single Transformer Prime on this planet where GPS works great.
So It is what it is: the metal design is beautiful, but it restricts GPS signals. And as there is no real a-GPS for Wifi tablets(as they have no cell-site triangulation possibilities), this becomes a real and unsolvable problem.
And Asus DOES has a clue, according to Asus there is no GPS on the Transformer Prime. The same as there is no GPS on other Wifi tablets like the iPad's. Asus made a big mistake advertising with GPS before release though.
So if you really want to use GPS on the Prime, you're out of luck and should return it. A full refund would be fair if you bought it early.
I've never been able to lock onto more than 3 and then for only a few seconds. That was with HC and now ICS. If I use my Prime for navigation I use my BT GPS receiver and a full mapping capable app which I've already tested and works great. I suggest if anyone bought a TP for navigational purposes return it immediately.
Non-issue (for me at least).

Ohh really.
Please explain TF201 sitting on park bench found 9 satellites, using 5.
Without touching the device all satellites lost and no further seen.
Don't like the odds on those condoms.
The aluminium case explains the poor signal to noise ratios, not the sudden loss of all reception on a stationary device.

The same reason when you are on the edge of losing a FM or AM radio station it can be crystal clear with a inch of movement. Try to navigate turn by turn with the Primes GPS as soon as you start moving signal is too weak to keep it. If your device just dropped all satellites without any movement it's just a glitch and has nothing to do with the overall problem of the Primes GPS.

Yes, this has been pointed out about the aluminum back. But as mentioned we all have the same aluminum back then ...
WHY are some Primes always able to see and get a GPS fix.
Why is ASUS even bothering with updating the GPS driver if GPS in not in the spec's?.
WHY has someone not show GPS results with the aluminum back off?
Off topic WIFI why the frack would I want to use G setting to get good WIFI? That's like not using my 5th gear in the car and staying in 4th.
I love the Prime but the aluminum back shield is a frack up period. Stock seems to have dried up around here (impossible to get). I wonder what's up.
My new Prime had never seen 1 single satellite for the 4 days or so I have had it.
Last night, I open Google Maps and click on Resteraunts and simply pick a Pizza Joint nearby. Then I click on NAVIGATE for it to navigate me there (I was just playing around on my couch in my living room, not in my car).
The bottom of Google Maps said "Searching For GPS" and I said "Fudge It" and just laid it on the coffee table. I closed my eyes and about 12 minutes later (I looked at the clock) my tablet says in a woman's voice "Turn Left on Birch Drive!"
I couldn't believe my ears. I quickly opened GPSStatus, GPS FIX, all that. Then I noticed that Google Maps said "Searching for GPS" again. Google Maps needs a lock to navigate you so It actually got a lock for a split second, which was exciting.
However, the other apps were showing 4-5 Satellites, and they have never shown one before. It wouldn't lock, but the fact it was all the sudden showing some satellites was quite exciting since my GPS had appeared to be Dead on Arrival.
So, if you have time and can stop playing with the tablet, set up a route on Google Maps, choose for NAVIGATION, and set it down, maybe by a window, and wait 15 minutes. Maybe you will get a lock.
In my opinion, my GPS works VERY SLOW. It took literally 10 or more minutes to see any satellites, then started loading a few more slowly till I got up to 5. Again,I couldn't get it to lock onto any anymore, but I was in my living room and I have 14 mature trees in my yard (I am talking BIG trees).
Maybe give that a shot and see what happens. Because my tablet had seen NOTHING ever, but I was only trying it for 5 minutes at a time then I would get pissed.

No one wants to destroy a $500 device but if your willing feel free.
G gets better range with Wi-Fi in general and the Prime lacks good range with it's Wi-Fi for the same reason GPS sucks the aluminum sheild if it's not good enough for you return .

Not true!
My Prime must be bad unit because 97 percent of the time it never sees any satellites and it has had actually only had a fix maybe three times out of 100 tries.
I'd be happy to get a fix period each time I tried
Hence my original WHY with the same aluminum back can some Primes get fixes while others don't even now satellites exist in orbit?
My bad unit is going back. I'll wait for the 700 series or a revised TF201 with a new back. Until then My HP Touchpad running ICS will do for now. Yes, no HD video or camera but that's fine.
GPS works on all other sanctioned Android tablets (with market access).

Sorry I forgot to mention asus terrible qc on the primes I'm sure there's plenty where gps is totally borked bottom line is gps will never function as a turn by turn on primes with aluminum backplates. End of story
look at my youtube video... it was honey comb and nearly perfect...
with new updated ics its worthless...
I don't see any satellites and I have never seen any on either of my TFP's. I have owned 2 so far and they both didn't see any satellites period. My GPS light stayed yellow and never went green no matter if I used wifi or not. So why is mine not seeing any Sat's, but you guys complain when you have a weak signal. I am in the process of trying to return mine I bought from BB, but I am waiting my 14 days to see if they will get some in stock. If they do, the customer rep will send one out to me or the store nearest me, and then I would have to send mine off. That's what the customer service rep told me to do. It's not that big of a deal to me, but the unknown serial was, so that's why I got rid of my first one.

What does stationary device, placed on park bench, mean to you?
Not moving...9 satellites, with a fix, then suddenly nothing. No satellites in range. TF201 still sitting on park bench!
As an aside my Wifi is perfect. In fact better signal strength and bandwidth better than both my phones and similar to my laptop.
I don't want turn by turn navigation (have TomTom for that). Just a occasional fix on Google maps. Wifi is generally too inaccurate.
And I do know a little about GPS. RAIM, FDE and Baro aiding help keep me alive in my 9-5 job.
If you are happy with your prime great.
But do check the bottom of the box your Prime came in. The spec still show GPS. Mine is a late model Prime. So regardless of Asus removing it from the web site I feel I am entitled to some form of GPS functionality.
Happy to do that Wifi assisted and it should work in a wide open space. But it doesn't for 70% of owners.
So my question once again why are the other 30% of TF201's offering some sort of GPS functionality?

I also wonder about this. Why waste the time and effort?
Here's how i fixed my GPS problem:
I pulled out my Galaxy SII. Got a fix in 2 seconds.
True Story.
i can get about a 20m accuracy lock while indoors in a matter of seconds, but it never improves in accuracy.
Satellite’s in view: 0-4
Satellite’s In use: 0
Time to first fix: 2minutes

5. Satellite’s In use:Fluctuates but up to 6
6. Time to first fix:3 mins
7. Has the GPS worked in previous builds of ICS: n/a
8. Did GPS work in Honeycomb:Yes and Much better before
9. First 8 digits of serial #: BCOKAS02
In Honeycomb It was working very well but since the update its way more flaky, as it will go from 9 sats in view and suddenly lose them all.

GPS Software/Firmware not Hardware

I believe 100% that GPS is a Software/Firmware issue. I also know that there have been threads about this before.
That being said I had GPS working fine on my tablet when I got it and performance has gone down with every update. I am now on .14 and I have no GPS at all. Inside, outside, vertical, horizontal, with a phone, without, clear skys, rain, etc. The only 2 things that I haven't tried is taking off the back of the tablet and using gps tether, reason being that it worked before and now it doesn't and tethering has nothing to do with the internal GPS.
I'm almost thinking that they disabled the GPS in one of the last updates 13 and 14 for sure.
EDIT: What do you know it must be like going to the doctor. It hurts until you go there then everything is fine again.
My Prime is seeing 4 satellites in view right now however the gps has not "locked" yet.
The weirdest thing is that I left GPS on for a couple of hours with the screen sleep turned off and got nothing and now in the time that it took to edit this I got some satellites in view. I'm at a loss.
Has anyone else had similar experiences?
@Gary Key any input on this? Other than GPS my tablet is 100% functional, I haven't experienced any of the other problems wifi, reboots, etc.
it is hardware, it's been proven. the GPS and wi-fi antennas are connected via pogo pins and in some primes te pogo pins are touching, giving you great performance and in others they are not touching giving you no GPS.
GPS works on mine with .14, but doesn't lock to as many satellites as with .11, nor does it maintain as consistent a signal.
Personally, I believe the GPS issues are a combination of hardware and software.

I don't buy the pogo pin theory. However the aluminum back might have something to do with it.
And how exactly has this been proven? Not to start a flame war but nobody has replaced the pogo pins with solder and put the prime back together. They have only added antennas to the device and/or removed the back plate. Lets get with the scientific method here. Change one variable at a time.
In my case the only thing that has changed is the version of the software on the tablet. The newer the software/firmware the worse the performance.

There's a multipage thread about this already (GPS performance acceptable, then degrades after .13 or .14 updates). Here's what's going to happen: You'll probably get flamed, a bunch of people will insinuate that you're an idiot for even SUGGESTING that it's not completely a hardware issue, and a few will mock your methods as unscientific. Debate may or may not go back and forth for a while, and then the thread will slowly die. And one day, .15 or .16 will come out, and maybe your GPS reception will magically improve again. Who knows?
I don't think that GPS will ever be GREAT (lots of birds with green-bar signal strength) but I do think that software updates are effecting the ACCEPTABLE GPS that a number of these units seem capable of achieving.

This has been pretty extensively discussed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474391
The aluminum case is definitely a major problem for GPS and Erusman "solved" that problem by attaching external antennae to his Prime so that the GPS can get a relatively clear signal. He experimented with several different types of internal antennae, hard wired the GPS antennae to replace the Pogo Pins, etc all with very poor GPS results until he ran an antennae out the back of his Prime.
To me (and most people who followed Erusman's testing), this indicates that the GPS's main problem is a hardware one, that hardware being the aluminum backplate of the Prime.
I have had varying GPS performance with the different firmware updates, which indicates that software can be a factor. However since I have also had generally poor GPS performance regardless of which formware I have been running I am pretty sure that software isn't as much of a factor as encasing the GPS antennae in what amounts to an aluminum faraday cage .
Not another one of these. I posted this on another forum. To the OP, if this is software please explain my results. Now even though it was picking satellites it wasnt really that useful as it didnt really track me on the spot when doing turn by turn.

I pretty much agree. I doubt it will ever be truly accptable to the level of say, a TF101 - though I was told that my replacement C1 Serial Number Prime would be "At LEAST as good as a TF101" by a tech support manager. Seems that where the Prime is concerned NOTHING is a "given" Some days I get some GPS activity, some days not so much. What is apparent with my current unit is, GPS is EXTREMELY inconsistent, and not just from session to session, I mean from minute to minute. I can have 11 sats in view, using 5, and 10 seconds later lose half of them,or ALL of them, all without even moving the Prime so much as a millimeter.
I guess I will never be able to use my Prime as a "professional GPS device" Or as an unprofessional GPS device, or as a GPS device of any type. Sucks... and will continue to irk me for as long as I have and use a Prime. Probably for a long time after as well. I suspect that any mention or thought of Asus will no doubt bring the Now you see it, Now you don't GPS screw up to mind.
Know what would be great? Not having to see ONE MORE comment like "I didn't need the GPS anyway" or the classic: "If I want GPS, that's what my phone is for." That's terrific! Then if you buy a new car and the $1800 Navigation doesn't work, and the manufacturer decides to just stop supporting navigation in that model, you will be all set with your phone.
Don't TELL me how a tablet doesn't NEED GPS, and don't TELL me that the iPAD 2 WiFi doesn't HAVE GPS. I didn't BUY an iPAD 2. I bought a device that said "GPS" on the box and on the web. My GPS doesn't even work for LOCATION, never mind navigation.
Tell me again how I can just return it if I don't like it. That's the Problem... I do LIKE IT... I FREAKING LOVE IT, all the more reason why I want it to work properly. And I don't want to return it, I want to exchange it, or fix it. If it will never work, well, then I will never be completely happy, but that doesn't mean I can go get one of the many "Comparable" devices (Like Best Buy offered me when the oversold Pre-orders. There ARE no Comparable devices.
SO I am stuck using an add-on Bluetooth GPS Tethering device. Works ok. Bug me that there is GPS hardware right here in the Prime that doesn't work. Bugs me a lot. I am an engineer. Crap that doesn't work, or works poorly bugs me.
It's like the "Real Feel" weather people. Telling me that it's 60 degrees, but "feels like" 63. Not to ME! To ME, it feels like 66. Don't TELL me how to FEEL!
No one can tell me how to feel about this either. It feels like I got ripped off. Rant over (for today)
I think its the software too.
I was sent a c model that works perfectly in every way except the gps which will not lock on to any sats. BUT using free nav usa I can lock on to sats and stay connected. IT IS NO GOOGLE MAPS BUT it does work. Sooooo is it software ?
Ok, so I'm only marginally tech savvy, but lets say i wanted to set up optimal GPS conditions for my prime (which has never seen a satellite). How would I do that and what programs do you recommend.
So far I've tried putting my prime next to a window running GPS Test and letting it sit there for uo to 10mins.
Thanks
@SmartAs$Phone:
I know exactly how you feel. My prime's box didn't have GPS listed, and I was aware of the issues going in, so to me I knew ahead of time and I was okay with that. Bestbuy, on the other hand, was still advertising GPS as a feature at the time (End of January) and last I checked on their site they're still advertising it.
But for the folks that bought thinking "Yes! Full on GPS!" and it didn't deliver I can certainly understand the frustration. Double so, considering that when it didn't work they came here and found many others with the same problem, and they realized that had the done more searching up front they would have known about the issue.
In the end, however, no software is going to fix this problem as has been proven by the various hardware mod threads. For those willing to mod, that's a fine solution. For those not willing to mod, well, I don't know what the solution is.
Well, my C1 model had relatively OK GPS with .11
At my front door I could get 11 sats and four locked and it said about 48 feet accurate. BUT, use maps and my location jumped around and was typically 200 yards or more off.
With .14, I get a lot more sats, more locked, and 36 feet accurate. And on maps is locks dead on to where I am.
Can firmware improve GPS? Clearly. Did it get better from .11 to .14? Clearly.
Now the good part. If I was lucky I got a few sats intermittently indoors (1 to 3) after a few minutes. NOW, I get 7 sats and a lock with 72 feet accurate, and the map is about 100 feet off, but on the right street.
Say what you will. I don't have anything special. Same metal back.

Seems like I pretty much called this one.
I am also thinking that gps issue is mostly software problem. When I bought tfp there was android hc. I had seen 15 sats and connected to 13. Whith .11 it dropped to max 6 visible but I was able to get a fix. Now with .14 I can see max 4 sats with no fix. I`ve got no problems with reboots nor wifi.

I agree with you 100% I'm an Avionics Tech I work with GPS rx's all day. We have a GPS generator and with the unit right under the gen it shows about the right -dbm however is unable to obtain a constant lock. If I pad the signal down it gets better and locks on solid. IMO its an AGC problem which is a software setting for this chipset. I have been temped to open my prime up and solder smb connectors to the main board and hook it up to a good GPS antenna, but I know it still wont work. People here dont seem to understand RF and how antenna's are a specific length ect. I'm not bashing people but a clip lead isn't an antenna nor a valid test.
I am having the exact same problem. At times I get no love, no birds, like right now. Zippo, nada, But last time I checked, I was getting lots of satellites. Very inconsistent and I can't find any reason for it..

What is your GPS [GLONASS] lock time?? +info on GLONASS

In case you didn't know, the Note can use GLONASS instead of GPS (Click on the words to read more).
People use GPS like "Xerox", "Coke", or "Kleenex"... but nevermind that.
What is your GPS/GLONASS lock time with A.GPS (Assisted GPS (network location)) and sensor aid on??
Please describe whether you are outside or inside. I am also particularly interested the lock time from a fresh boot or if you're using GPS from a new location.
IMPORTANT: Please note (excuse the pun) down, when you launch Maps or Nav and the arrow shows up almost instantaneously, I would like to know IF *sometimes* the GPS reticle on the status bar continues to flash/blink for a while.
Why do I ask? My Note takes anywhere from 3-12 seconds to lock when GPS is "hot" and takes 10-25 seconds to lock from a reboot in doors while stationary.
Compared to my Sprint Evo 3D, GSM Galaxy Nexus, or the iPhone4s that I never use, that is slow. When I powered up the Galaxy Nexus for the first time, it locked under 5 seconds! My Evo 3D would lock from a boot in under 5 seconds. The 4s is super fast also. The Note, with GLONASS, is supposed to be faster and more accurate...
Thanks.
Edit: Interesting discovery today--the slow lock and low precision in my car may be because of my car--but it may also be revealing limitations in GLONASS:
Every piece of glass on my car is double-paned (twice as thick as the typical car glass), sandwiched with a polymer layer, along with an IR rejecting coating. This is designed to keep the interior very quiet, makes the glass theft resistant, and the IR coating reduces the heat that enters the cabin (heat travels in the form of infrared). The IR coating, unfortunately, also rejects other radio frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum. That, along with metallic particularized tint, causes a reduced radio performance for any device that is in the interior of the vehicle.
I usually don't have any problems with the GSM/UMTS or CDMA phones, and GPS has no problems either (although I notice a reduced s/n ratio). As I indicated before, other GPS-based phones lock fine, and the GPS+GLONASS iPhone works fine also.
As I was driving home today, I tried opening the window. I noticed that every time I opened, the phone would get a quick and solid lock. Every time I closed, the uncertainty circle appears.
Is it possible that GLONASS, operating at 1.6Ghz, using FDMA is less able to penetrate certain objects than GPS operating at 1.57Ghz using CDMA? I presume civilians are still only using the coarse channels so that doesn't help. It is interesting to see that GPS have no problems in my car while GLONASS does. I will drive another car tomorrow and see if there is a difference.
My Note locked within 2 seconds this morning, on my way to work. I was outside in my car.
When opening google maps, I get a lock before the app is fully open, ie. I'm already locked by the time I can do anything in the app even. Compared to my Captivate and Infuse, the lock times on my Note are godly.

I lock before apps load that can use it such as maps/nav. I came from a Vibrant that even after numerous "fixes" it still could take a couple minutes to lock.
Wow... That is what I expected from my phone. Are you guys all using the stock ROM? If not, what ROM are you using and who is your carrier?
Thanks.

A follow up to those who responded:

Thanks for the information.
I was excited for the GPS capabilities in this phone before I bought it, but my experiences have been far worse than everyone elses. Google Maps is loaded for about 5 seconds before it even STARTS trying to acquire a position. And even then, while indoors it takes a good 20 seconds to lock on. My iPhone 4 locks on indoors in about 3-5 seconds.
With the note, many apps think I'm 10-15 miles away while indoors. Especially with weather apps that just want a quick location fix but don't leave the GPS on during use. At first glance everything thinks I'm far away. Chat apps that only use GPS when sending a message have the same problem. Navigation apps that leave the GPS on during use are accurate. It's annoying. Never had an issue like that on my old phone.
Outside though, the Note seems to lock on nice and quick, within about 2-3 seconds upon starting acquisition, and my accuracy is generally at 3 meters or less. Even my $650 handheld GPSr doesn't have that level of accuracy.
EDIT: The notification bar icon DOES continue to blink for several seconds after achieving a lock.

As for accuracy, this is a function of the number of satilites that you have locked onto. I believe all you need are 2, possibly 3 for accurate elevation, however the more you lock onto the more acurate you are. This is why "quick" on and off checks are rarely very accurate. however, with weather, the phone grabs your location and then queries the closest whether center, which is very rarely in your neighborhood. Typically it's your closest airport or military base, so this will atleast be 20-30 miles away, but often in same or neighboring zip codes.
For the indoor, thing, I never expect (nor really use) reliable GPS signal indoords. Just because you get a lock doesn't mean it'll be enough locks to do much. I rarely get lost going from my kitchen to the latrine anyways, but I suppose with enough beer it could happen. I would suggest (and you probably already have) check to make sure you make use of "use sensor aiding" option.
If all else fails, I will loan you my vibrant and you can experience a man-tantrum in your car when the fking thing wont lock after 5 minutes and your lost as **** and late as hell and google maps keeps freezing and FCing. That'll make you want to wine and dine your other devices for treating you so well.

I believe you need at least 3 for triangulation (location) and 4th to give elevation.
Another interesting thing I noticed about my Note--even if it locks quickly while I am stationary, it looses lock when I am moving (driving). I had my Sprint Evo 3D, Verizon Galaxy Nexus, Sprint Galaxy S Epic 4G, GSM Galaxy Nexus, and the Note side-by-side on the dash. The only phone that keeps losing and reacquiring the lock the the Note (especially while traveling at freeway speeds).
my note locks on really fast
under 10 seconds for sure.
If im out side its within 5 seconds.
My Skyrocket usually locked in around 10-15 seconds
my inspire....30 seconds.
my nav in the car....30 sec

Really? Your complaining about 12 seconds to a gps lock? (regarding the OP)
Give me a break...
My DEDICATED GPS Tomtom unit takes over 2 minutes to get a lock, I consider it a blessing that my phone locks faster than a dedicated gps.
Good Lord...
My guess is you are one of those that complain about your browser taking more than 2 seconds to load as well.
Regarding gps stability, there are a couple of different things to try, namely one of the more rare things is calibrating the compass. There are many videos on Youtube, just search 'smart phone calibrate compass'. You'll find 3-4 different methods, any will likely work. And yes, the compass does affect the gps keeping a lock in speeds higher than 20 mph.
Another thing to try is downloading the latest gps satellite data. There are several apps available on the market that can do this (GPS Test, GPS Essentials, and GPS Status all do this).

Why so excitable and quick to judge? "Give me a break..."? "Good Lord..."? Really?
Your TomTom uses GPS, not GLONASS and does not have Assisted GPS. GLONASS and A.GPS should allow a faster fix. With these new and additional technologies, the phone SHOULD get a much faster fix than your TomTom. You're comparing apples and oranges.
My Evo 3D, Galaxy Nexus, and other phones I metioned, with GPS (no GLONASS) and A.GPS will almost ALWAYS get a fix in 2-5 seconds. If enough research is done here at XDA, you will find that many newer devices, if working properly, *should* get a lock in under ten seconds. Your "DEDICATED GPS Tomtom" [sic] is a different and arguably less advanced animal.
Another example--the built-in GPS in my two vehicles lock IMMEDIATELY when the car is on. Why? Because they remember the last location, use brake sensors, steering angle sensors, and accelerometers to determine location. If they do not lock immediately, something is wrong.
If you re-read my original post--I am trying to figure out if others have the same problem, and attempting to understand what others are experiencing. At the same time, I provided information on GLONASS, in case other owners didn't know they had it.
For a just-released, $650 device, I expected mine to perform on-par with other phones. Perhaps mine is defective? I wanted to find out if I need a replacement. Last checked, this forum is about people asking questions, sharing information, and learning something. To that end, I am puzzled at your comments--it seems like *you're* the one who is complaining...
So yes, really!

While I'm her--there is also F GPS (fake GPS, provides coordinate of your choice to the location manager), GPS to MMS (allows you to send a text/MMS with your current coordinates), and GPS Speedo (a nice GPS-based speedometer).
See the edited OP. I made an interesting observation today. It seems like GLONASS signals are less able to penetrate objects...
My Note's GPS performance is flawless and is my most loved feature of the device. Superquick and very accurate.
I use the GPS all the time for backpacking, motorcycling, running and of course general finding all the stores my wife makes me take her shopping on the weekend.
Even better than my previous iPhone 4 and 3g.
My Samsung Infuse's GPS was a disaster taking forever getting a lock, loosing it, placing on the next road over, and not performing if sitting in the middle of my car...constant frustration so I REALLY am happy with my stock Notes GPS.

Share Your GPS Experience

I bought the TF 2 days ago and have had no read on satellites, GPS has been totally dead. Last night, I tried the GPS on the second storey of my house and...presto, found 12 satellites quickly, all very strong signals. Went back downstairs and nothing. So strange, but must be a signal strength issue as cannot penetrate 2 storeys. Will test more and outside this weekend.
Please share your experiences with gps on this device and hopefully we can try establish best practises to maximize probability of it working (if possible).
I am running stock untouched: No root and locked bootloader with the latest update.

I am rooted... unlocked running Virtuous Prime with 21 update. I had virtually no GPS now I show 11 sats and lock on 8 even when walking around with in 10 secs, this is the best GPS I have had in 3 months(with WiFi OFF). The BT and WiFI is much better it drops a little but still stays in the green in GPS Status.
I have absolutely no signal whatsoever on mine, not even a hint of one.
I went through the RMA procedure, no joy, they sent me the same pad back, did not even crack open the one i sent, I'm pretty sure they never even opened the box i sent it in!
My best buy would not take a return on mine, RMA procedure took too long. I would seriously recommend returning yours while you can, unless you dont mind tossing about $75 in the trash, because that's what you paid for the GPS feature.
There is a "fix" over on in the dev forum, you can find it here:

I've tried all 5 builds on my prime, have yet to get squat for a GPS signal, i mean not even 1 satellite......ever.....not a one! the fixes did nothing for me.
There is also a class action lawsuit regarding this missing feature, you can find it here, join by phoning the lawfirm heading it, a few folks in the development forum have already joined in, looks like i will be too unless i opt for the VISA chargeback route.

GPS? This is the ATP forum right.
if u know what i mean…
OT,
I have barely had any satelites, ran around at work at both my houses only one time visiting my father and on the top story of the building i had found sats after leaving my atp (by accident) with gps test on.
moved a little, and lost them all
Mine used to show satellites, but a lock would take 20 minutes or never arrive, and it would go away if you moved the tablet. On .15 now, it doesn't get any satellites.
Looking into the crystal ball, I anticipate the next few posts on the matter to look something like this, not necessarily in this order:
1. My GPS don't work, this sucks
2. Mine works fine, here's a pic
3. My GPS don't work, but I don't care
4. I have it on good authority that Asus will be posting a fix for GPS
5. My GPS don't work, but I don't care, and therefore you suck
5. Asus took GPS out of the spec, stop complaining
6. I used to love this forum, now everyone is whining
7. You don't need GPS because this tablet rocks
8. I didn't know this tablet had GPS
9. My GPS didn't work before, but I shoved a paper clip in the 40-pin connector and now it does.
10. Shens on the paper clip thing, you need to weld a satellite dish made of tin foil to the USB port on the dock.
11. WHY IS EVERYONE WHINING THIS SUCKS SOOOOOOO BAD
12. I RMA'd my Prime and now GPS does/does not work.
13. GPS don't work, but you should be thankful Gary Key is here Asus rules
14. I RMA'd my Prime and Asus smashed it to pieces and charged me $140 to get it back.
15. GPS don't work I'm going to sue someone.
16. My mod friend will make you all stop whining, you'll see!
17. I returned 13 Primes to Best Buy looking for a working GPS
18. Everyone with non-working GPS should email Gary
19. GPS works if you manually enter latitude and longitude.
20. GPS is a government conspiracy to beam messages into my brain.
21. I took my Prime to the Apple store; they gave me a free Ipad 3 and I made out with the hot sales chick under a display table
22. GPS is obsolete anyway. If you're lost you could use your tablet as a shovel to forage for grubs, a head covering against the sun, a sled to drag supplies behind you, or to write your last will and testament.
23. SERIOUSLY, STOP WHINING OR I'M GONNA TELL ON YOU
24. GPS will work, silly, just buy a cheap GPS. And an expensive dock to connect it to.
25. Could someone with a working GPS post a location for a store that has a Prime?
26. GPS doesn't work, I demand Asus pick up my daughter at her boyfriend's house.
27. MY GPS is getting 10 satellites, which one has the Disney channel?
28. The issues with GPS on the Prime only affect a small percentage of users, no more than many other devices. And there are no American soldiers in Baghdad. We have them surrounded in their tanks.

If you are getting 12 satellites inside your house, I'd say that's pretty good for any GPS receiver. The fact that you can't see them two stories below isn't that surprising, GPS signals are pretty weak by their nature, they don't travel through roofs, walls etc very well.
Good luck; I'm off to try out #21 from the list above at my local Apple Store...
GPS works fine on my end. Running Prime Icylicious w/ aGPS patch Test Build #5. GPS when not in motion locks in less than 8-10 secs, and when driving about 15-20 secs.
Here's a short video of Build 5 while driving: http://youtu.be/N7wQIL3myfY
Interesting range of replies. Outside of the gps issue, I think this device is incredible (I am not experiencing wifi signal issues), so I would rather not return it if I did not have to.
I live in a 2 storey house and the difference between 10-12 satellites and nothing is one flight of stairs from ground level to upstairs. My Desire Z locks in on both levels to 10+ satellites in under 15 seconds.
My hope is this issue will be tolerable, but I may have to unlock/root and install the patch to achieve this end.

Dead as a doornail since I bought it early Feb. Always reads 0 sats even outside clear view of the sky, never locks. C1 serial. Doesn't really bother me as I never use it on the Prime and if I did need it I can just use bluetooth2GPS between my Nexus.. but it would be nice if something it was supposed to come with out the box worked. Other than that I got no issues with mine
Works fine on mine (C30 batch). What I did (and have been doing since my first Android GPS capable device):
Download 'GPS test' from Google Play, start it up with WiFi enabled, go into settings menu, discard aGPS data, renew aGPS data, shut down WiFi, walk outside, sit in the sun for a while and Presto! 12 sats in view, 10 connected (within a minute or 2....)
Although I'm not sure aGPS is also fetched bij WiFi (normally it's cellular broadcast station I thought), it's my standard 'work-flow'and it works for me....
Just what we need another gps thread, like there aren't 36 already.

I was unable to find a recent gps only thread. Since you know of 36, I am sure all readers and posters of this thread, including myself, would be grateful if you could link in your top 10?

Interesting, what serial # do you have , c10, c20 or c30?

I picked up the TP last Saturday, C20 serial and not good at all. Outside it is a hit and miss and never actually works correctly. Shows that your on top of buildings, houses, etc... I have all my Android devices rooted, but going to wait a few weeks to hear anything on the Transformer Infinity. Then I will decide to either keep the TP or return it. Really like the TP, but since I am always on the road I need GPS working.

Nothing here
I have a C2 serial device, ever since I got it ive had zero GPS signal and zero sats. I opened the device and applied rubber shims behind the antenna as some have suggested and this made no difference. I flashed new official .21 firmware today, and still no signal at all. I downloaded and applied the aGPS fix (test build 6) which has been proven to work with a lot of people, but alas I still have zero visible satellites after 25 minutes of searching.
Does this mean my Prime has faulty GPS functionality, or is it just one of the unlucky ones which is worse than normal?
Ok maybe the gps on my unit isn't completely dead. Took it outside and waited and waited and waited until I finally saw satellites.
Went outside and my stock TP (a C20 serial number) with the .21 update took about 5 minutes to find 3 satellites, but no lock on any of them. fortunately i have my phone if i need to find where i am.
To use the GPS 2 Bluetooth methods do you need to have the phone and tablet rooted or should the the apps work fine on their own?

No GPS lock despite fixed satellites

Hey guys,
so my G5 locks on to up to 20 satellites with more satellites being visible, but doesn't establish a GPS lock. It will sometimes acquire a lock after 15 minutes or so, but accuracy will be atrocious (300m+). It used to have <10m accuracy with less satellites locked. I did not change anything about my rom or installed software. Is there anything I can try?
Do a Google search for "LG G5 GPS Fix". There are several threads both on XDA and Reddit related to this and how to fix it, but this one should get you started...

Many commenters noted that bending the pins up only fixed the problem temporarily, that they eventually will lose contact w/ the back plate again. When I fixed mine last week, I put a 2x2mm square shim under the motherboard to keep the pins raised up enough to make good contact. I just cut a corner off a business card, removed the MB screw just above the pins, slid in the shim then replaced the screw. It only raised the MB a hair, but it was enough to keep the leads making contact with the back plate. My GPS has been working great ever since.
If you don't want to tear down your phone and risk voiding the warranty (or cracking the screen), others have said they had good luck sending their phones back for warranty repair. But you'll be w/o a phone for a week or more if you do that.
Thank you. The thing is, I already did that fix and my phone is seeing and gets a fix on plenty of satellites. It just doesn't get decent gps coordinates even with 20+ satellites connected.
So for anyone reading this: What worked for me was to open the phone again and actually use a slightly *thinner* piece of paper than before to raise the Mainboard. Currently seeing +-8m indoors and +-4m outdoors with 20+ SATs in use. No idea if it's going to last, though.
