How to mount USB when running CM7? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have new Viewsonic G Tablet. Just installed CM7 (I tried both BitTrix gingerbread beta 06 ROM and update-cm-7.0.0-Beta1-Harmony-signed.zip).
My problem is how to mount the tablet's internal memory via USB on my PC running Ubuntu 10.10.
Normally, a notification pops up on the device asking to mount the storage. This does not happen with either of the CM7 ROMs listed above. When i connect via USB, there isnt even any option in the drop-down to mount USB.
I tried a bunch of different things, but I couldn't figure out how to mount the storage -- except from the Clockwork Recovery menu.
What am I missing? Do I need to install an app? Which one? (I tried two different mounting apps from the market but they were crap. One just force closed, the other was a widget and wouldn't do anything.)

I had the same issue when I tried CM too, so I'm keen to know this too. Its really frustrating because its next to impossible to put things on the root of the drive without that. I actually got to the point where I had to NVflash back to stock to get anything done.Thought I had bricked it at one point, and this was less then 5 hours after unboxing it. Gotta get that stock piece of crap software off ASAP and CM6.1 was the first I tried.
CM may be "Stable" but its still very much in the experimental stage. No regrets with going with the Vegan TnT rework.

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing this problem. I spent another couple hours today looking for a solution and I still can't find one.
BTW, I don't know what the other ROM options are. I can't really use TnT Lite because the warning here [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842004] says it cannot be used unless the stock recovery is in place. I have Clockwork Recovery installed (and I don't really want to uninstall it).
I would prefer a Gingerbread ROM. I've tried two as I said in the OP, but they were both based on CM7 and they are both missing the option to connect/mount USB storage. So I'm looking for other ROMs. Any suggestions?

I would strongly recommend Vegan Tab gingerbread experimental http://vegantab.gojimi.com/download/VEGAn-7-02242011-Experimental.zip. I have been using it for the past 3 weeks and love it. Though it says experimental it is quite stable and have not experienced and FCs.
NOTE: It uses the original way of mounting memories (internal is in \sdcard and microSD in \sdcard2).

Thanks. I'll try it. How different is it from this ROM I already tried?

Might those be the same?
I don't have an ext SD card in the tablet. I'm assuming I should be able to mount the internal memory like I did with the stock ROM...

I know this is an old thread, but I too had this problem. Here's what I did to solve it.
I went into the ADWLauncher settings and under "General Behavior", I choose "Swipe Down Actions". Once there, I set it to Open/Close notifications".
Now, when I plug in the USB cable and swipe down, I see the menu where it allows me to turn on USB Storage.

I just installed CM7 to my internal EMMC on my Nook Color. I wanted to thank you for posting this. It's exactly the info I needed. Now I can mount my Nook just like I used to under the stock OS.

No External Card on ICS.

I have flashed both AOKP and Nightly ICS ROM and both of them, I can't access my external SD card, only internal SD card.
I went from stock 2.3.4, flashed zerg rush kernel or w/e to get CMW so that I can flash the ICS roms, and when I got it, everything works fine except for the external card and its really annoying me. Any help would be nice.

Thank you for replying. Have you been doing full wipes between builds? Or just dalvik/cache?
I did a full wipe for b31 and upon booting up and connecting to my comp it came up with the USB Mass Storage page. Thinking maybe I need to go back a few revisions and then flash w/o data wipe until current?
I don't fully wipe unless I am changing major versions. Or if I need to troubleshoot something

Hmmm, well that was a no-go for me. Went back to 4-2 and flashed incrementally - 4-3, 4-4, 4-7, 4-8, b31. 4-3 had the different wallpapers and MTP/Camera option menu option under "Storage," which changes in the 4-7 build to stock wallpapers, USB Storage, and no menu option under "Storage."
Also tried going from 4-3 straight to b31, same result. Not sure what I am doing differently that is removing the "Storage" menu. avidmovies pointed me to a UMS apk which does the job... just the visual annoyance of two USB icons when on computer.

yeah it only shows up the internal SD card on my computer, not the external. and anyone know where i can get the "different wallpapers" from 4-3, i really like one of them.
can you link me to the UMS APK? thanks. i found "USB Mass storage watcher OTG" in the market but its just force closes.
P.S. my two SD cards were working fine on 4-7 so idk what happened.

Should be in the first part of the faq post. End up with 2 USB icons, but it works for me until it gets fixed. I pulled apart the trebuchet and framework apks looking for the wallpapers, no luck. Not sure where else to look.
Mine only flashes one box when hooked up to windoze7 but when you click on "open device to view files", both cards show up.

I would like to run CM10 from an sdcatd. I get lost following the directions iamafanof has on his blog. Does anyone have something clearer?
I just want to boot 10 from sd ,like CM 7 was.
Thanks.
Bill
Just use the same directions used in succulent's (iamafanof) directions on how to boot CM7/CM9 from sdcard. The only thing different is to use his CM10 boot from sdcard zip.
CM10 Install Assist?
UPDATED NEAR END - I am with you miniblue... I have been running an SD version of CM7 for sometime now and absolutely love it. However, would like to upgrade to CM10 and tried using imafanof's SD boot install but somehow I messed it up so now I am running some sort of hybrid of the Nook (still has original apps installed) and CM10. So now I have the nice polished look with none of the functionality.
If someone can help me with some tips as to how to flash and start fresh with a fresh install of CM10 I would be very grateful. Now I have a nook that boots up with cyanboot bootloader but loads a hybrid of CM10 and the nook truncated Android. Now I have the Nook purchased apps (don't care to have) and no ability to do much with the Jelly Bean other than having the nice polished look.
According to the Nook, I am running Android version 4.1.1, Kernel version 3.0.31+ ([email protected] #1), Cyanmod version 10-20120903-UNOFFICIAL-acclaim. Also - My Nook seems to now think it is a 8GB nook instead of the 16GB Nook that it really is. I have the new look but all the B&N apps and no functionality beyond that to speak of. Cannot change themes, etc.
So, I made a good bootable SD card to load emmc CM10. Installed it but still have the weird hybrid version of the Nook software on it. Do I need to format the emmc or something first? I followed the instructions as indicated by chrmhoffmann on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773362 - where it says this method will overwrite everything. What am I missing?
update: so I was able to use a CWM bootable SD and formatted emmc, user data, etc. Looks like CM10 is running exclusively. Trouble is, as can be expected, it is unstable and so it goes to black screen a lot, particularly when surfing/on wifi. May have to try CM9 for awhile until 10 gets to a bit better performance.

Yes. It works fine. As everyone is aware, there are some Black Screen Of Death (BSOD) issues and a few random reboots but not to the point of a MAJOR issue.
I have posted my simple guide to installing the SGT7 (Meghd00t) ROM on my website here: http://raywaldo.com/2012/09/root-for-nook-tablet-1-4-3/ - includes video and my process worked to root & install on a stock Nook Tablet (8GB) running B&N v.1.4.3.

This is awesome. I'd been thinking about doing a full restore - re-root - install w/ CM10, and it's nice to have a method to follow.
BTW - Ray, (or anybody) have you heard of anyone having problems getting their PCs to recognize their Nooks as USB drives on CM10? It's seems like after a time my PC first stops recognizing the external SD (shows a mounted drive icon but shows no information or says 'please insert an SD card") . . . then eventually stops recognizing the internal "My Nook" drive as well. At one point I did a complete USB driver uninstall-reinstall using USBdeview, and it fixed the problem but only for a day. And it did not work the second time.
I know this is NT related because it happens on any PC I use. The problem is not present when using CM7.
Ideas?
I love sgt7! Can you thank too many times on xda?
I am new here though and I have a few questions. Has anyone been able to reproduce the sleep of death bug ? Or is it completely random? I have done some minimal Linux and android development and I would love to help with improving jelly on nt. I actually have two nook tab 16s. One is running sgt7 9.13 the other 9.14. I know I haven't searched as much as I could have just yet but I wanted to see if anyone would recommend some things I could do for the devs. Can we get a trace from adb when the bug occurs or do we lose the connection immediately before? Do we know where in the libs or kernel the bug may be lurking?

Not sure which CM10 you have. I am running the SGT7/Meghd00t and it works fine for me.
One thing that you probably already know.. When you connect, Windows will beep but may not display the file manager window.
If you have USB Debugging enabled, then you have to switch to mass storage mode. In the notifications area, you will have a little USB symbol. Click on it and follow the prompts to enable the Mass Storage mode.
Another note. I have Win7/64bit so it may be relative to that. But sometimes SDCard readers, etc have trouble with my USB 3.0 ports and I have to use them on the 2.0 port instead.
Thanks Ray!
Ray, just wanted to give you props for your tutorials. They are very thorough and explain things in great detail for those who are new but want to benefit from the greatness of ROMs and rooting.

I have been using cm10 for a while and LOVE it. However, the battery life is so terrible that it's unusable at the moment. I want to install cm7 instead until the battery life improves for this rom, but when trying to install it, it doesn't actually work (cm10 still boots up). Is there a specific process I need to follow to achieve this? Thanks.

Provide more details. Does it go through the install process? Any errors? Does the cm7 install appear to complete too quickly? Are you using twrp or cwm? Have you wiped cache and data then tried installing 7?

Sorry for the lack of details. I'm using TWRP, trying to install the CM7 beta. I have wiped cache and data before flashing, as I always do. But yeah, the install seemed to complete suspiciously quickly, like 5 or 10 seconds. It does say that it completes successfully, however, with no errors.

I've had similar issues and I found in another thread that powering off and powering on the device enables Deep Sleep which helps immensely with battery life. The key seems to be remembering to do this after a SOD.
You have to do a complete power off/power on cycle, rebooting doesn't seem to work.

A complex problem with Vibrant [SOLVED!]

Hey Guys!
Prologue
I have a complex problem with my beloved Vibrant. First of all, I got it for Christmas a year ago. It had no issues, with a stock 2.1 (and after a kies update 2.2) firmware, it was fun for a first droid. After digging myself into the world of droids, I decided to root my baby, and put CM on it. It was about a month ago; I saw that there is a stable cm10 for the Vibrant. There were minor problems (could not exit cm recovery and boot the phone normally) with doing it, but at the end, it worked flawlessly.
Problems
Unfortunately, a few days ago, my phone started to have problems like "Trebuchet stopped working" and similar error messages appeared on screen. Yesterday my Vibrant stopped working. The only thing it could do was when I turned on, it showed cm recovery. I chose to reboot the phone, but again, recovery mode came up.
- Now, I use a stock 2.2 (Eugene's) but with this, I cant really use my Vibrant, except for calls and sms.
- Odin cant see my phone.
- I cant revert it to normal stock firmware
- When trying to put a cm10 to it, reboots into recovery it says: cant mount dev/block/mmcblk0p1
What I did
First of all, a lot of research. Really, a lot, but I suppose not enough, because I cant repair my phone.
- I tried to revert to stock (using AIO Vibrant toolbox). I put Cmenard's kernel (with cm recovery, as described in the official cm wiki howto) onto the phone, since then Odin cant see my phone.
- I have Heimdall, adb shell installed on windows, so tried some lines to revert the Vibrant to normal, no success
- Rooted with superoneclick, so I have root, and su.
Summary
My suspicion is that the internal SD card is corrupted. Anyhow, I tried to use parted, but cannot format my internal SD card. I found solutions that may help, but unfortunately I have no exterior SD card, to make those steps.
Any help would be highly appreciated, as I am starting to lose my mind, and I do not really have a backup phone (will definitely buy in January).
In the top of that, today is my birthday.
Greetings to all,

Yes, download mode is ok, 2 volume buttons pressed, then plug in the usb cable. Before the new kernel was put on, I used the same method and eg was okay with Odin, thats how I put on Eugene's mod as well.

First and foremost, happy belated birthday. It's a shame this had to happen on your birthday... Especially since I have some rather bad news. In your post--which, by the way, was very well written--you mentioned getting the error "cant mount dev/block/mmcblk0p1" while in recovery. This is a pretty bad sign. More than likely, one of two things happened. Either you obtained the Encryption Unsuccessful bug or your internal SD card outright crashed. Either way you're going to need to purchase an external SD card if you wish to continue using your phone. No way around it bud, sorry.
I had the EU bug hit my device a month or two ago, and had to purchase an external SD card as a result. After partitioning the new SD card and tweaking the phone to run off of it, my phone runs great... But switching back to stock/installing a new ROM can be a tricky process...
Good luck. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you very much for the answer and the kind words. I will get an SD card then, I will need it later on anyway I guess. I will try this method you linked, and going to post about what happened (but not in the near future, Christmas is coming).
Good news, your phone runs great now after those things, it means I have a little chance at least. :fingers-crossed:

Thanks! Yeah I was kind of disappointed, but maybe I can sort it out.
Okay, thanks again, and the best wishes to you as well!
Hey Guys.
Lately, I bought an sd card (class10, 16GB) and tried to breathe life into my Vibrant. Used this method (except the fact, that I used cm10):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1665123
Actually this worked.
Before that, I figured out, that Odin couldn't see my device because of some driver errors Heimdall caused. (Or Heimdall/zadig installed some other drivers, to be more precise.)
So after reinstalling those drivers from Vibrant AIO Toolbox, I used that method.
But.
The final step, where you edit the vold.stab file, those two lines are swapped for me. Anyhow I tried to edit both ways (as written originally in the post, and tried to swap the lines) but unfortunately after editing, saving the file, and rebooting, the phone just stays at the animated cyanogenmod logo. Nothing happens. Really, I waited an hour or so, still nothing. Tried to reinstall everything, clear cache, dalvik, then phone reboots again normally to cm10, but as mentioned in the post, camera does not work.
Any thoughts would be helpful here.
EDIT:
That post says it should be this after editing:
#internal sdcard
dev_mount emmc /mnt/sdcard 1 /devices/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/mmc_host/mmc0
#external sdcard
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/emmc auto /devices/platform/s3c-sdhci.2/mmc_host/mmc2
and my file contains this originally:
# internal sdcard
dev_mount emmc /storage/sdcard1 auto /devices/platform/s3c-sdhci.2/mmc_host/mmc2
# external sdcard
dev_mount sdcard /storage/sdcard0 1 /devices/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/mmc_host/mmc0
So it would be great to edit these two lines correctly.
Bump. Any help would be appreciated.
This is the last and only problem with my phone, and it doesn't look like it's an unbeatable problem.

Thank you very much! Wow, this worked like a charm! One zillion thanks!
Hopefully this thread will help out many Vibrant users experiencing problems like this one was. Thank you all once again.
Hi guys.
Since then, I have flashed the CyanAOSP 2.9.0 ROM into my beloved vibrant, new kernel (gearkernel universal 1.1.2) and everything works fine, 4.4 is flawless in this device as well,
however
I am now facing some problems again, as the system cannot access the sdcard part, so with rootbrowser I can edit files and anything else, but camera, music player and gallery is not working.
I am thinking of a vold.fstab editing, but as 4.4 has this no more, I am stuck at this point. Any ideas of how and what to edit? Tried build.prop, no success so far. In CWM I can see that the sdcard is not mounted. Mounting it also did not help either.
Edit: I would think, editing the fstab.aries would be the key in this process, but I cannot really tell which part needs to be edited.

Reserved for happyness. Thank you sooo much!
Thank you! im downloading right now :fingers-crossed:
Thanks Demetris.
Couple of 1st impressions:
1) The ROM seems to have reversed the mounting for internal (emmc) and external sd cards. Is this by design or is it a bug?
2) I really liked the large status bar icons in your CM10 rom as they are easier on the eyes. Is there any way to make the icons (clock, battery, etc) larger in this rom?

Agreed - same thing happens with my install of it.

All data is defaulted to internal sdcard by design and imo this is the correct way and if you search around you will find that when otherway around when there isnt one ext-sdcard in the nook the mounting has bugs.
How to add and remove tablet quick setting, I can't find the option for it, the rom only allow me edit the default JB tiles and layouts
Because the sdcard was mounted as internal storage, so all data and installed apps will disappeared. How to reversed it without reinstall again.
I currently have your other ROM installed (SGT7+CM10+Cherry Picks), can I update to this new one without a full wipe? And also will the sdcard switched to internal storage mess up the currently installed apps like the previous posters have mentioned?

Go to Settings... About Phone... Click on the "Build Number" item 7 times to enable the Development Settings option.

It is under development options, which may not be enabled.
To enable it go to about tablet and tap build number 7 times (from memory) I think.
It has been hidden by default for some reason.

I'm having deep sleep / battery problems with this rom.
I turn off the wifi at night before going to bed. Even with wifi off, it drained substantially overnight.

That's tricky!
Thanks!
The EMMC/SD swap has made it so that games and other things that require the SD space will not install.
EDIT: Yeah, the apps themselves will install to "internal", but wish to store their massive obb data on the SD card which now only reads as 1GB.

You obviously need to repartition your nook.
Runs beautifully for me. Just to let you know, if you drain it to 0 and it turns off, and your nook cable has broken (as they easily do), it will take ALL NIGHT for it to turn back on with trickle charge. I plugged it into a cell phone charger, which didn't work at all, but then used a cable for external 2.5" hard drives, the type that has two usb plugs, one for power and the other for power and data, and left it overnight.
THAT worked. Just sayin'
But this seems to be the case with the slow charging (whether Nook cable or regular usb) with ALL of the 4.2 roms that I have tried (even 4.1). Oh well. Not a problem for me, but just in case someone else has that problem.
On the other hand, I have not used a rom on the nook yet which I like better or has been more stable for me than this one. Good job demetris!

Sorry, it wasn't as obvious to me because it was never an issue with any other rom that was ever released. ever. Thanks for your help. I do enjoy your mods and the time you put into it.
Far and away my favorite ROM. There's nothing out there that's as stable for me as the SGT/Cherry Pick ROM.

Meghd00t- will you be updating based on kuzmas 2/06 release? I ask because I saw you released a kernel in that thread, and I was wondering if it should be flashed over this ROM, etc. I prefer to stay with your versions as they are always speedier for me. I have noticed, I am again experiencing that when plugging in to charge, I have to turn on the screen until it says or shows charging, though this is a very minor issue. Thanks again!

[Q] CWM unable to mount Ext SD & Data

First few things: I don't know if I'm supposed to be posting this here, idk if the problem is device specific or not... Sorry if I've done anything wrong. I've searched already, can't find any similar threads that actually help. I have the international version. I was running the CM10.2 Rom prior to 'the accident'. I will pay for a resolution if need be - PM me.
There's a bit of a story to this so I'll go over it all - not sure what's relevant.
I've been running out of storage for days, a 64GB SD card is in the mail. I currently have an 8GB one as well as the internal 16GB, both of which were near full, but the external one had relatively more than the internal one, so I decided to use foldermount and link2SD to move some space over. That all went fairly well.
This morning I got invited to the Aviate Beta launcher, which looked interesting. Tried to install, didn't have enough space. So I decided to make a backup of Nova, go into the play store, uninstall nova to free up space and then install Aviate without leaving the playstore. It worked, turns out I don't like Aviate much, so I worked backwards. Uninstalled Aviate, went to install Nova. Not enough space (idk how). Uh oh.
So I deleted some less-necessary apps that I could reinstall later. Not enough storage. Notification comes up in the bar along the lines of "storage critically low, device may malfunction". Now whenever I attempted to enter settings, the process crashed. Great. Simple fix, flash a NANDroid back-up in CWM. I can't remember what the message was, but there was something wrong with the back-up.
Wiped everything and tried to flash CM10.2 from the external SD Card but it wouldn't mount. Data also wouldn't mount. I tried several SD Cards ( ie about 10, different brands, sizes, classes, etc out of hope). So I decided I'll open up and Odin and just re-do everything per /showthread.php?t=2387980.
Turn the phone back on, stock Jelly Bean lockscreen was there, and once unlocked only the notification bar was there (no launcher). So I used different versions of Odin, different cables, downloaded the image several times, etc etc. Nothing fixed it. In fact, it's worse now. after booting past the Samsung logo, the screen just goes black now. smh
Can anyone help? It would be extremely appreciated. It's also a time sensitive issue as I need the device for work on Monday.
Sorry if I've missed anything. Yes I'm a noob, but you great people at XDA have helped a lot of people out before so I'm hoping you can help me.
Thanks!
