[Q] Semi-transparent black background with corner solid image - Vibrant Themes and Apps

I have a question:
I'm trying to learn how to make a transparent status bar background on the pull down notification bar (not where the clock is shown but where your notifications come up) I want to make one with a solid image on the corner I've read about 9.pngs over and over and over again but maybe if someone is willing to spend a few days going back and forth on this topic it would be much easier as a group.
I basically want to make a semi-transparent black pull down background with an image of a skull on the corner in red. I know I have to modify the status_bar_background.9.png but here are the following questions I have:
The image is super slim, what are the dimensions of the actual background? Area in pixels.
After modifying and creating my own background (in photoshop) what steps do I need to make sure the picture will fit perfectly on the pull down menu?
Using draw9patch what are the requirements on each field needed to make sure the background will fit?
I want to thank everyone who is willing to help me in advance because I'm sure this will probably take some time to learn. Any tutorials and links would be perfect.

First open up the img you want in Photoshop. Open up the original status 9.PNG.
Make the img you want to layer by double clicking the tab. Bottom right. It should say background.( in photoshop)
Now cut the img and paste in the original status bar. Now resize the img and make the picture you want to same size as original pic.
Now if you see bottom right you will see that you have two layer.( the original, and the picture u just resized)
Click the original img and delete it.
Now bottom right above the layer tabs there is opacitiy.
It should say 100%. Turn down the opacitiy of the picture you resists. Save it. Your done.
I'm assuming you have some knowledge in Photoshop. If you don't, and stuck pm me.I will assist you.

is this my final result
Ok so I duplicated the background to get the transparent black and a solid skull but I'm not sure if this is what you meant let me know if I'm wrong check the images below any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Can't see well on my phone but it seems about right. Just make sure to save it as PNG.

Hit me up on gtalk if you still run into issues.

Just flashed my theme but the image still shows the original, hmmm...
any suggestions on what I did wrong?

[New Touch Dialer Skin!]Tired of Gray?! Here is a new Look

Hi,
For all of you who doesn't like the gray color or are tired of the same old touch look, I made a new dialer skin. If you have PDVIET 4.0.0.0.6 or you have installed touch style dial pad, all you have to do is to copy these files to your windows and soft reset. I don't have time to make a proper cab file, but feel free to make a cab file out of these and share it with us
oh by the way the dialer skin is only for portrait mode, later on I will make a landscape too.
I also installed the transparent home plug in icons, I uploaded them before, but I'm gonna upload them along my other files.all you have to do is copy all the .png files to your windows folder and soft reset.
I hope you like it
Nice. I've build cabs...
Hello,
is it possible to customize our own landscape and portrait background picture ?
regards,
(if so please specify which folder in the /windows)

haha well i though this skin is so brilliant that nobody wants to go back to the original one lol..
all you have to do is overwrite the attached images to your windows folder
If you want your home pluging Icons back, sorry i don't have them , you have to hard reset.
It is nice , but I found it too bright
it is not easy to see in the sunlight, may be with another text colour will be nicer
thanks for help
its nice, but if im gonna change the background picture im gonna have to change the buttons too, maybe you should remodel the dialer in a way that the background of the numbers is transparent ?

If you look closely at the buttons that i posted , they are transparent (look at the numbers) the thing is that i haven't found a dialer dll that supports transparent images. If you found a dialer that you could simply change the background image, let me know

Hi folks,
i've made a few changes on the first skin of hma4.
But now i see that there is a much better way to skinn the dialpad.
Anyway i changed all pictures for port and land

Photoshop Files
Okay, I promised that I'm gonna make a dialer skin so that everybody can change it just by changing one background image! well i tried and I didn't succeed. but for those of you who know Adobe Photoshop, I attached the psd file so you can use it to make your own dialer. all you have to do is to change the background layer and save your file as a png file. If you don't know Photoshop just don't bother, I really can't explain further. also you have to overwrite the button images with the images in the zip file. If you know Photoshop and you want to make a dialer for yourself, look at my psd file, trust me it will help feel free to share your creative dialer skins with us

Touch and touchlike dialers
Guys, hdialerere is my 2 cents about the touch (and derived) dialers
Positive: nice big buttons
Negative:
1) The photo is awfully small, even smaller than in the standard wm6 dialer
2) 2 buttons are missing: speed dial and history. You have to open these functions with options. not funny
3) There is still some space left on top that can be used.
I hope that someone can make a dialer with these buttons and with a bigger photo. Thx.

Thank you hma4! Excellent work all around. Question: I run linux and have access to GIMP which can do many of the things Photoshop can...is the layer method supported in GIMP as well? I'm wondering if there is a step by step tutorial on the net somewhere and willing to google for it...always willing to learn something new although I am in no way or shape an artist.

GIMP opens psd files and also supports layers. for tutorial for GIMP you can visit here: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/
here is what you can do, try to open the .psd file that I uploaded couple of posts above, then if you could see my file in different layers then you can work your way from there. you have to make 3 .png files, namely:
Progress_BkgdP.png
Dialer_BkgdP.png
indialer_ps.png
all you have to do is look at those layers, one of them is the background image, try to change that to what ever you like, another layer is the button masks so you have to overlap that on your background, and finally save the file in .png format with the names that I mentioned.
I really can't write a thorough tutorial for this, I think if you spend a little time you can figure it out all by yourself.
Good luck don't forget to share your creative work with us

Guide on how to correct the framework-res.apk so you can cook ICONs

OK folks,
Have a look at this guide that I created for editing the framework-res.apk so that you can then go to the UOT Kitchen and cook up your own ICONS and Batteries.
It is a long read and most folks can probably figure it out.
I have used this to create my own Battery and Status bar icons.
Regards,
Alperin1
I have converted your document to a PDF (some folks don't use Word).
Download here
If you want me to remove this I will.
thanks very helpful guide, but too involved for me. I will either use some one else theme, or use 7zip open archive and change PNG's trick.
Hopefully someone can upload an edited framework-res, for every DJ_Steve update that we all can share for UOT.. hint...hint...
thanks again, I may give this a try when I have time, hopefully I wont need to though.

Ramtix, i knew that the framework was out thre for the others to use.
I guess the guide is for the folks that want to do all the work and learn a lttile bit about how the Framework is edited.
It took me a long time to figure out how to edit the 9.png files and compile them and just wanted to help others to do the same.
I tried that framework and failed to cook everytime
What is the use of those .9 pngs anyways?

OK, what are the 9.pngs used for or why are they needed.
Stretchable Patches
If you have an image that you may need to stretch you then converting it to a 9.png will allow it to stretch. Also if you need put something in the PNG file, by converting it to a 9.png you can tell it where the text/data/information is allowed in the png file.
When you convert to a PNG you need to need to put a single pixel on the left side of the image and the top of the image. This pixel is not part of the image but in a frame around the image the frame also is just one pixel all the way around the image.
When you put the pixel on the top of the image you are telling the system where the image can be enlarged. Draw and line straight down from you pixel and this is where the image will stretch from. This just allows the image to grow to the left and to the right. Think of it as a square when you put the dot at the top of the square you can them change the square and stretch it left and right to make the square wider, so that it is now a rectangle. This all comes in handy when you rotate your device from landscape to portrait and back again.
Now when you put the pixel on the left side of the image, again in the frame that is around the PNG file, you are telling the system where it can stretch the image, this time you can pull the image up or down and so the height will change. Again image a square, you put the dot on the left side of the this determines at what point the square is allowed to stretch.
Only the lines with the dots on them will change, the rest of the square will retain the original shape and the original image. Most of the time this is done to an image that is only one color so that you are not messing with an image.
Here is the best example I can give of the DOT at the top of the 9.PNG or the left side.
Take two pieces of blank paper that you have and set one on the table and then set the second piece of paper in top of the first with about one inch of the right side of the first (bottom) piece of paper showing. The point where the top piece of paper ends and the bottom piece of paper starts is that DOT. Now slide the bottom piece of paper to the right and keep the top piece of paper still. Hope this all make sense
Content Area
Now lets look at the right side and the bottom of the PNG file. These two side determine where in the PNG file that text or other stuff can overlay or be imposed into the PNG file.
If I have an PNG that is a button and it is 50 x 50 pixels and I want the text for the button to be centered left to right, I would focus on the bottom of the 9.PNG image. I want the text to be able to use most of the pace from left to right but i do not want it to use the left 5 pixels at either end, I would create a line at the bottom of the 9.PNG that begins 6 pixels from the left and ends 6 pixels from the right. Why 6 pixels you are asking, well I have a one pixel from around the image and I needed to take that into account.
The same thing is used to center the text on the button from the top and bottom. Only this time you would use the right side of the image and fill in all pixels except for the 6 from the top and the 6 from the bottom.
Now when the button is stretched, you can use more of the space, but you will never be able to use the last 5 pixel on the top, bottom, left or right.
WOW, that was a long write up.
Enjoy,
Alperin1.
BTW, this is not unique to the Streak, it is used for the Android OS and maybe more.

Tried making my own framework.apk but failed big time, appreciate you uploading your work for me to use. Will keep the guide and continue to play with it, would like to say that I beat the software, not that the software beat me.

Do you know where you are beating the software into submission. (where are you stuck?)

alperin1, I will walk you through my Eclipse phase and maybe you can tell where all goes wrong.....
1. Make edits to .9 files like a champ if you don't mind me saying so...
2. Open Eclipse and go to File/new/android project and nothing, import LunarLander files and make sure settings are on Android 2.2
3. Create and now my copy of LunarLander is permanently updated to my edited .9 files (so assume at this point all is good to go).
4. At Export Signed Application Package is where I am having my problems, go throught the steps receive confirmation my file is G2G and when I move them to my Framework file all the edits are gone, like I did nothing to them.
5. Have preformed #4 multiple times and same result every time, everything moves but my edits are stripped out.
6. Figured maybe it is magic and edits will reappear when I cook my file, well no luck, get same exact error report as when I first tried to cook me some Icons on UOT.
Any ideas on what is causing my updated .9 files to loose the edits when I move them from LunarLander to Framework (Yes I do accept the overwrites when prompted).
Before you do the last step in Eclipse, drag one of the png files to your desktop and view it.
I am at work. I will play with this when I am home.

This is very interesting. When I export my package from Eclipse and then pull the images they do not show the dots and the bars just like you are seeing. So, I have to say this part may not be where your are running into problems.
Is it possible for you to post the error text? Put it into a zipped file. I will see what I can do. This is kinda new to me so I will do what I can for you.
So you are in Eclipse and you have lunarlander, you then put all your edit 9.PNG files into the folder. Next your export it.
After you have created the new lunarlander.apk, you are going into it and extracting the 9.png files you need. You are then placing these file in the same location that you pulled them from in the framework-res.apk. right? Then you are uploading this to the UOT kitchen.
Will do
But will have to wait till I get home from work.

Here is my LunarLaner.apk, none of the edits survived creation of .apk, but they are in my LunarLander sample as your guide shows them to be. So it is when I make the .apk that all fails. Have attached my Pre-export LunarLander so you can verify I made the changes to .9 files.
Window 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Norton Anti Virus
Plus other software
Any and all ideas are welcome.

Well, I have taken the 9.PNG files that you have provided and I put them into my Framework-res.apk file and I was able to cook up some goodness for myself at the kitchen.
As you are stating and you are correct, the frame around the 9.png is not showing after step number 4, but the information is there, i just do not yet know how to view it.
I think the problem may be that the same 9.png files are in two locations in the framework-res.apk. Can you try to cook a new set of ICONs or anything for that matter and when you get the errors, put them in a zipped text file and post it here for me.
Oh and what ROM are you using? DJ Steve 1.9? If so, you should have many more images to edit that what you have provided to me.
Cooked my own framework!!!
alperin1, Thank you, think I needed confirmation that once exported via eclipse edits would disappear, plus I took my time and made sure I did the wallpaper steps exact. Cooked my own framework, I am getting there, am sure it is one very small drop in a very big ocean of Android development that I have learned with your expert help I do appreciate it.

[Q/REQ] Status bar tweaks..

I have a couple tweaks that I want to make to my status bar and could really use some help. I'm new at this and have yet to try my hand at XML edits or the like and have only completed simple image swaps to date. The following are the two things I'd like to accomplish:
1. I want to remove the battery icon (not insert a transparent icon)
2. I want to re size the signal strength indicator. I have a custom image that I'm using, it works great and i have re sized the .png to where i want it but when i flash it, it is auto scaled to fit the original width of the previous image. I'm assuming that this is an XML edit? Along with re sizing this image, i'd like to center it on the status bar if possible, but this is not that big of a deal.
Any and all help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Again, I'm very new to the more involved aspects of themeing but I'm also very eager and willing to learn. Thanks in advance for your time and patience.
Interested in learning more myself I was one of the of d1 themers but with sense 3.0 m10 files and more xmls I'm lost LOL. I can png and edit xmls decompile but as for what does what in the xml I'm lost

New S memo backgrounds

I want some mew backgrounds for the S memo app but have had no luck searching for any. A transparent background would be ideal. Any idea of how to implement this or a note app that supports transparent PNG files?
Over pulled the S memo app and will decompile it shortly to find the backgrounds. It doesn't seem to save them elsewhere on the SD card. However I'm unsure how to go about making a transparent image.
A white image with an opacity too it, then saved as a .png.. Give me some dimensions when you pull the backgrounds and I'll throw a few different variations your way.

that one is cool. I'm planning on using a completely transparent background so I can mod a FancyWidgets clock skin with the numbers will be in my handwriting. I'll recompile and install once I get done with this nandroid
Wow, that's personalization to the max. Are you compiling a truetype of 1-9 or what? However you do it, please share. That'd be an awesome guide.
I intend on just replacing the 0-9.png files in the skin I'm using. If it works out I'll post it here with some screenies. Can you go ahead and make one with 100% transparency?
It's not working. I'll try using the other one you made with Andy and see if I can see the difference then.
edit. Nothing. I'm thinking that the images are used in a different way to make the backgrounds. I'll look into it more and see if I can come up with the answer.
The android one won't work. I believe uploading a png as an attachment on XDA will automatically render it as a jpg. If you figure out which files to revise let me know.
S Memo Background
Regarding color schemes, i believe dark colored notes like the one used in S Planner in handwriting mode will be energy efficient for amoled screen devices and will also look great and elegant on any screen (like when you put it as a widget in the homescreen). I think the handwriting screen in s memo uses a dark gray background with light gray gridlines and an aqua blue font/handwriting lines. This makes it look great and unobstrusive.
Just a suggestion.
Not sure if you guys are already doing this, but you have edit the .9.png files in the drawable landscape and portrait xhdpi folders You cannot just overwrite a .9 png with a standard png or it will not work. I suggest googling how to edit .9 png files as I'm sure someone out there can explain it better than I can.

[Q][ST15i/ICS]Status Bar: Battery/Transparency

Hi Guys,
Before I begin, I'd like to shoutout to all the great devs here in XDA who regularly updates us with their mods while living their own busy lives.
I'm using a ST15i on stock ICS and managed to customize it by reading around. I've rooted my phone from GB to ICS and flashed custom zips to add or modify certain functions and changed how it looks to give it a different feel and to better suit my taste. I've reached a point where I can't modify it anymore due to lack of knowledge and training. And now I'm here.
Can anyone point me on how to change the transparency of the status bar, change the battery icon of my choice on my ST15i running on stock ICS? Also, can you help me in reverting to the stock icon fron "No available network"? All the info I found didn't help me. Tried the kitched but that didn't work for me either. I'd rather learn how rather than be spoonfed.
This is my first time posting here, so go easy on me.
Thanks!
I don't think a transparent statusbar is possible in ICS. In earlier versions, it was just a case of making the statusbar background itself transparent.
But Google have made it harder to do with later versions.
To change the battery icon, you just need to change the png files in one of the drawable folders in either framework-res.apk or SystemUI.apk. With the Mini on ICS, it's most likely drawable-mdpi in SystemUI.apk.
If you want to change how the icon works, going from changing every 10% to every 1% for example, then you need to decompile the app and edit some xml.
It's a little long-winded, but it's simple enough and I'm always happy to help. The battery icon mod was the first one I found out how to do and I spent months trying to figure it out. Literally.
It's worth checking out Tickle My Android from the link in my signature. It can do the battery mod for you, if you want it to, and can handle all the decompiling and recompiling as well actually taking apps off your phone to begin with.
Not sure what you meant about reverting icons..is it possible you can provide a screenshot of what you want to change?

Could you take a quick peek at this? There's an update on his notification toggle for a transparent status bar so I got me thinking whether this was possible or not. As for the battery, I'll still have to search for the battery icon I'm fancying about or I might have to create it from scratch. Sorry, I forgot to mention this but I tried to use your tool. I just didn't know how the battery icons would look like that's why I chickened out at the last moment. Instead I used it to create a zip to flash a stock SystemUI.apk to remove the Notification Toggles which I had extracted from an earlier CWM backup (Can't find an uninstaller. I figured all I needed was stock to remove it). Great tool, by the way.
I can't post any screenshots at the moment since I haven't been able to add that feature to my Mini yet. So I'll try my best to explain what I meant about reverting the network icon. If you would notice whenever you lose the network signal an icon appears on the notification bar? Well mine used to be color grey and had a yellow exclamation point beside it. Now it's all red. This might not be an issue for some but it's pretty hard on the eyes. I'd like to have the old one back.
Just to give you an idea, I'd like to improve my Mini's functionality and aesthetics while keeping it as close to stock as possible. So far I've managed to:
-Insert Reboot/Reboot to Recovery
-Use Wavelock
-Use Xperia S apps (Alarm, Callscreen, Clock, Conversation, Contacts, Font, Home, Keyboard, Phonebook & Walkman)
-Supercharge
-Notification Toggles (which I removed)
Changing the status bar and reverting to stock icon for no network signal is next on my list.

Wow! Didn't know that. Just tried it just now and it worked. Thanks! Will be posting/updating once I've recreated the situation.

Well, it might be possible. There's a lot that can be done if you just know how. I'll have a look at a transparent status bar soon. It was incredibly simple to do on early GB so hopefully it can be done on ICS as well.
There are a lot of battery icons out there. If you find the ones you want, TMA can put them into your app for you, or I can tell you how to do it manually.
As for the icons that come with TMA, you can see what they look like on the thread. Some look better on HDPI, and our phones are MDPI, but the tool can backup your original app so you can just try whichever one you want without being in danger of losing anything.
Changing that icon should be pretty simple. All you need to do is find out which image file it is and change it. Either by downloading one of the GB roms here and taking the new image file out of that, or by using a graphics program and just recolouring it yourself. If you're doing that, and if you're in a creative mood, you could even redesign the icon completely..
Thanks for the kind words, btw. If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know!

OK, I won't hold back in asking for assistance anymore.
I've attached a screenie of the icon problem I'm facing right now. If you would look at the upper lefthand corner, it's all red. I wonder if it's the same for the other ST15i Stock ICS users. It' used to be grey with a yellow exclamation point or something like that (can't recall how it exactly looked like but, yeah, something like that). Now for the battery icon, I'm fancying the Purple Android Battery Icon in TMA, only in green and shouldn't mess with the original height of the status bar. I've cooked a battery icon using the kitchen and it messed the height of the status bar. Could you also point how to manually change the battery icon? I'm trying to do it myself so I won't be asking around here anymore. I think others will benefit from it, too.
The stock SystemUI.apk that I've attached came from a stock version of my ST15i's ICS. I wondering if the network icon is found in the framework-res.apk, not in the SystemUI.apk. Since I've flashed the stock one and managed to remove the Notification Toggles but Red icon is still there.
Hopefully, you can find something with the transparency of the status bar. Thanks for all the help!

That icon might be in framework-res.apk but I suspect it's SystemUI.apk. That's where most of those things are. This is a stock icon so flashing a stock system app won't do anything to change it. If you want, you can change the icon yourself by loading the png into a graphics program and messing around with it. If you want it to be grey and yellow, then you can make it grey and yellow.
Battery icons won't change the height of the statusbar. Android automatically scales images to the right size. As long as they're in the right folder. The Mini and Mini Pro both keep their images in drawable-mdpi for ICS. If images are put into drawable-ldpi, drawable-hdpi or even drawable-xhdpi (which would be insane on such a small screen), Android will scale them for a low, high, or extra high resolution screen. Which will mess the statusbar height. Your battery icons can be any height you like, they just have to go in the right place.
By the way...Tickle My Android will automatically put them in the right place. Just saying...
To change battery icons manually, you need to use apktool or a utility that uses apktool to decompile framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk
Hey....Tickle My Android uses apktool...(subtle, ain't I?)
Then find the battery icons in whichever drawable folder they're in. They might be in more than one but that's not an issue. Replace them with ones you want.
If you're changing how often they change, you'll need to edit the xml files in the layout folder. If you got your icons from a kitchen, they should have come with the right xml files. In fact, if you've got a version of the Purple Android icons, you could use TMA to put those on first and then change them to the icons you want. That'll ensure you get the right xml files.
Then you use apktool to recompile the apps you changed. Make a copy of the original app, use 7zip to copy the res folder from the recompiled app into the copied one (this will ensure it's signed correctly), extract resources.arsc from the recompiled app, add that to the copied one at store levels of compression and..well, that's it.
The copied app is now ready to be put back onto your phone.
Eyes glazing over? Brain leaking out of the ears? I know it sounds complicated but it's quite simple once you've done it a few times. It can get a bit tedious if you're doing it a lot....which is why I wrote Tickle My Android in the first place.
