Custom ROM for Galaxy Ace: discontinued, sorry - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

Hey guys,
I've discontinued my work on the custom ROM for the galaxy ace, due to the fact that the only person who I knew, who had this phone, actually broke his phone (because it fell or something)..
Also I do not have enough time to work on it properly, so I hope someone else can continue my work (Peeter123?) and open a new topic concerning this...

Intentionally left blank

Looks good, will try to help if I can. Also: Wifi definitely needs fixing. Constant crashes in std samsung build.
Maybe it would be nice to build in ext3 and ext4 support.

I will focus on speeding up the fw first, maybe do some kernel hacks later..
Are you running the new XEKB1 firmware from samfirmware . com already? If so, could you supply me with a copy of your /system folder? Im missing some files/dirs from the fw at the moment..
Thanks!

Sure no problem, I will get to that this afternoon
Ps. I'm indeed running the latest firmware (S5830XEKB1)

Will there be a simplified safe step by step tutorial in the near future on how to use this ROM? (and if it ****s up how to restore to factory default or so) I tried messing around with ROM manager with my first model and it bricked so I'm really careful with the new one I got now (yes I tricked the people at the store to get me a new one).

You can restore firmware with odin relatively easily. Even if the main firmware is ****ed up. How bad was it bricked? And was it possible to turn your phone on in download mode?

Yes, before I post the first version of this ROM I will include a guide on how to succesfully flash this ROM and how to fix a broken/bricked Galaxy Ace again... reading through Peters posts (on this and other topics) hopefully he can help me with producing this..

There is no topic for Galaxy Ace! Why? I think there shold be a lot of developer...

What files do you need. Whole /system folder is a tad big
NVM uploading to my webserver now, I'll send you a PM with the link.

It wanted to reboot so I could back-up my current firmware, but it never did, all I ever managed to get was taking it into a 'connecting..' state within Kies when I used one of the three button tricks but nothing appeared on screen.
No matter what combination I tried or what kind of method, the screen stayed black.

Hmm yea that's what I feared. I guess you messed up your bootloader. A broken bootloader is unrecoverable. Everything else is fixable.

See first post!

First of all, I do not own a galaxy ace. Secondly, please dont post this in this topic, use other topics for basic questions, since it does not concern my ROM, especially since my ROM is not published online yet.
When it is, I will provide help for problems with my ROM in this topic, but not with others ROMs, sorry..
Good luck anyway!

Okay im not that bad for a person, so let me give you some advice:
*------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
Flashing your phone usually means putting leaked software on your phone and thus could potentially
break the rights you have that if it breaks down you get a new one.. so its up to you to proceed..
Before Flashing, make sure you have backed-up all your data, otherwise you'll risk losing it.
Secondly, try to read through some forums/sections (maybe about other phones) to know what
it is you are going to do.
Third, install the right drivers for your phone make sure that KIES is not running on your computer!
Shut it down, shut it down, please do so!.. You just needed to install it to get the Galaxy Ace Drivers,
but the rest of the program is only for people who don't know what to do with their phones,
if you are one of them: Stop reading and be satisfied with what you got, or wait for Kies updates!
*------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
Okay, now for the flashing:
Make sure your battery is charged all the way up to 100%, if not you can **** up your battery stats (which are restored after charging it up and playing with it for a couple of days, but nevermind)..
Before connecting it to your computer, shut it down and pull the battery!
Also, make sure that your computer wont be killed/shutdown because your laptop battery is empty or your little brother plays with electricity or something, and try to close as many applications on your computer as possible, just to be sure..
Proceed to the flashing, following these guidelines:
Firmware Update Steps, follow the exact order!:
*-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
1. Run Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 Downloader
2. Select OPS file : Cooper_v1.0.ops in the OPS field.
3.
- Click BOOT button and select: APBOOT_S5830xxxxx_xxx...._user_low_true.tar.md5
- Click Phone button and select: MODEM_S5830xxxxx_xxx...._REV03.tar.md5
- Click PDA button and select: CODE_S5830xxxxx_xxx...._REV03_user_low_true.tar.md5
- Click CSC button and select: CSC_S5830xxxxxx_xxx......_REV03_user_low_true.tar.md5
4. Put your phone into Download Mode: Press middle Key ( OK key ) + Power + Volume Down
5. Connect USB cable to your phone and the program must read the Com number it takes.
6. Click Start button and the update process will start.
7. Do not touch or remove anything till the device rebooted and you can see PASS word on the program!!
*---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
And that's it, that's all I can do for you at the moment. Maybe next week I'll have some more expierence with flashing the galaxy ace, as of now I have only flashed my Galaxy s (a million times) and my Samsung Star (three times ), so I'm not an expert on flashing a Galaxy Ace.

Ugh, was hoping for the ROM instructions
Anyway, I'm fairly new to Android and ROM's, I rooted my phone already successfully so I could get things like Adblocker for apps etc.
I understand and have been told that ROM's are supposedly the 'better' firmwares out there when they are designed for a phone, thus saving things like battery life and performance, is this true or is this really ROM depended?
I'm mainly looking for things like extending the battery life of my phone (performance speed is way enough already with stock firmware), would this be a good reason to use a custom ROM or shouldn't I bother?

Did you tried everthing in ACE..just reconfirming...

You can increase battery life by disabling data network when you dont use it and by removing all those fancy widgets from your desktop launcher, they eat up battery juice.. also, install advanced task killer froyo from market and kill your running apps that you dont use, set security to low

Tested a few days with and without ATK. There was no difference. Much better battery life with Juice Defender.

[Q] Possibly not bricked?

Hi, I've gone through all search engines and am slightly confused whats going on.
I was trying to flash my sg2 today and it was at analyzing part of in my odin and was stuck at do not turn off warning, after waiting for 5 minutes, nothing happened. Googled it up. various places (including this) suggested removing the battery and restart. However I pressed the power button first to power it down.... removed battery, poped everything back in. no response on phone, tried hard reset combo, nothing, removed battery couple of times, just no response. I take the phone is bricked?
However what really makes me doupt is, I plugged phone into charger. phone was hot at that point. So I left it for another half hour, came back. It was still quite hot - i mean the cpu must be working to generate that kind of heat. So I am just wondering, is it still def bricked or since cpu is working there could be a way to it?
P.s. I know its carrier specific, but if I have insurance, will self flashing/upgrading ur phone without official release void the warranty?
small update, I removed battery for 15 minutes, to let it cool down, touched it, it was all cool, put the battery back in - and 5 mins later, the cpu area is all hot.....yet no buttons are working... at least the hard reset is not responding....

REFLASH. usual fix .
Recovery Mode
Download mode ???

Flashing stock Samsung rom may void sellers warranty but Not Samsung warranty .
Custom roms or rooting voids all warranty .
Flashing wrong rom may void warranty .
I would presume any flashing voids any insurance .

I should also clarify, it all went fubar after following these instructions for DarkyRom:
Unzip the BASE ROM into one folder. It should have a file PDA. Open ODIN now (I use 1.7), in the PIT file option, select the pit 512 file. This should automatically tick the repartition option in ODIN 1.7 (if not, make sure it's ticked). Select the PDA file in the PDA Box. Connect your phone to the PC, make sure it's connected. Click start, wait for it to finish. Close ODIN, let your phone Reboot.

you may need to try using the usb jig which typically forces it into download mode again. search "Samsung USB Jig" on ebay

Dude you messed up, that ROM is not for the SGS2 and neither are the instructions, You need a Samsung service center or a de-bricking service
what?
Damn I cant post links, well I got to it via samsware 2.3.5 leak announcement, there was a link to darkys custom rom, from there there was at top Beta noob guide, I clicked english version, I landed on the page that was called: Beginners/noob friendly guide to flash any BETA release and from there I ended up on the ...Final v10.2 - Official DarkyROM - Gingerbread (JVQ 2.3.4) - Noob-Friendly...
sigh, i didn't see it mentioning not being for sgs2, and since I got there by starting from sgs2 article, I thought they are all linked....
I've sent it to service...
where did I go wrong....
When you go to return it, do not tell them you flashed it. Always worked for me just playing dumb.

you are really not giving a lot of details here...all you are saying you tried installing a rom and then it froze halfway..
Are you rooted firstly?
If you are have you flashed CF-root kernel?
How did you try to install the rom?
More info and then more people can help you out buddy..see if you can get into recovery and restart your phone.
well... if you've tried "every" (its not like there are a lot) button combination... then just go buy a jig from ebay and force it into download mode...

Nothing from what you said would help..
He obviously flashed it with Odin, and he said he's getting a yellow triangle with a computer behind it..
From what I understood, he could get into download mode.
So just boot into download mode and flash stock ROM. That should do it.

dont think its coincidence they are increasing after the american variants have been released. People need to check what model they have before flashing things.

its ok and same goes by my post as well buddy..we all been in his position one way or the other
1st - Your phone is not bricked if it show an image. Whatever image it is. The only real software way to brick your phone is to flash bad bootloader or stop a bootloader while they are being flashed. However, Bootloader are flashed first. So if your phone stoped half way, you should not have trouble too much.
Remove the battery from your phone for like a minute, then reboot your phone in download mode (vol- + home + power and when the phone light up, release power.) Then flash another rom from odin.
Also, what rom did you used ? If you flashed a rom for another phone, then you might have flashed bootloader for that phone on yours, which is bad. In this case you will surely need a JIG.
sorry im new to this whole rooting/flashing thing. i downloaded the lightning rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274
i have never rooted or doneanthing to my s2 before. all i did was follow the instructions on the page and thought it would be all good? it froze about a quarter of the way there in odin so i just took my phone out.
I usually find from this state I can get back to bootloader or download states
push and hold vol+ and home then power for bootloader
push and hold vol- and home then power for download
sometimes the phone can seem to freeze a little or even die (this happened to me loads on the galaxy s and once already on the s2) and removing battery sim etc or attaching the charger can jog it
however as other have said a JIG is your friend if for no other reason that even if you recover without it, custom roms up the rom count which some twitchy carriers might invalidate your warranty for, the jig will reset this
you can get them from ebay for less than £3 delivered, or there are instructions on this site for making them yourself if you are so inclined.
simply search 'galaxy s2 jig' on ebay mine was delivered today from portugal as I am way too lazy to make one and only wanted a counter reset anyway

Im new here and have tons of questions from experienced people

Hello. I'm George. And I have loads of questions about my android I think I have samsung galaxy 5 but im not entirely sure. Searching for my phone on internet and android market it gave me Samsung GT-I5500. But Is it I5500 when it has a with google logo on the back of it?
so lets begin
1. I would like to update my phone Rom or how you call it, I have 2.2 froyo at the moment. Can I update it higher?
2. If i can then how much room do I need on my sd car cause at the moment I have only 1gb sd card. Would that work or i need biger?
3. If I would do it could anyone give me online help? over skype or msn?
4. what happens if i mess it all up? Is my phone warranty lost and I can throw the phone in lake?
5. The last time I kinda attempted to uptade it it gave me error when backing up original rom. It was something to do that it couldnt mount /system or something.
6. What does bricked mean? does it mean its broken forever?
I'm so nervous that I mess it all up so before i **** it up I thought I will contact you guys.

1. Yes, 2.3.7 is the highest (I think) except for ics (4.0) which is very unstable
2. Don't need much space on sdcard except for moving apps. 1gb is enough
3. I'm sure someone would. Id be willing to do it over msn if we arranged a time, if you needed.
4. It is very hard to mess up. If you follow instructions there is a 99.85691% chance of messing up (exact value ) there are ways to get it backbif by any chance you do mess up
5. I don't think you are able to back up stock roms at the moment, that's why. But there are other stock rom files that you can flash if you ever want to go back
6. Bricked, meaning your phone is as useful as a brick. Happens when you mess up big time.
I was the same as you on my first time. It went fine for me, now I'm flashing different stuff all the time

[Q] No-boot brick - any chance of revival?

I have a Galaxy Ace that I upgraded to Gingerbread manually. It worked fine, to the point where I decided to flash ClockworkMod. I backed-up the ROM when the screen turned off (and the device too, apparently). Great, brick.
But I received it as a brick and recovered it once, so no big deal - I fired up ODIN, got all the firmware files ready, got the phone in the three-button (volume down + power + home) download mode, the OS detected the device (still no Download... label on the screen) but when I try to flash it, ODIN is stuck at "Setting up connection".
I've done a fair amount of research and so far I read that a CWM-induced brick is pretty much hopeless - the phone needs to be sent in to the service center. Also, it appears that in many cases JIG isn't of much help with the same conditions.
Any ideas on whether I can unbrick this phone?
If may ask, from where did u get the cwm?
Sent from your phone
Via ROM Manager.
And so, this is the answer.....
ROM MANAGER BRICK GALAXY ACE GT-S5830
That is obvious. As I said - I've read about similar situations. Too late to look back at it.
My question is - is there any chance of manual revival through existing tools?
Have you try this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071970
Rom manager known to hard brick ace. As u already stated that u've tried jig and it doesnt works, so no, theres no other way except to send it for repair. Sorry for your lost.
Sent from your phone
@Teflon Yes, that is the first thing I tried. No go.
@an0 curious - it is not possible, even though the modem is supposedly detected? ODIN has the StartThread indicators, so I am guessing the phone is in some type of "download mode".
i dont know for sure what it does to make ace brick, maybe messed up bootloader, maybe messed up partition layout, but as for now theres no known way to recover ace from bricking with rom manager.
It's worth exploring though. There's always a logical reason for these things.
@ZeBond sorry to hear your phone is bricked, but if you do find a solution (or even a reason for why it did/does it) could you update this thread with it?
what i'm always thinking every time this type of thread appear, in all these time rom manager known to brick our device with many users experience it themself, no one bother to contact rom manager dev (its koush right?) and inform him about this?
from all the person in the world, he might know what could possibly go wrong to make such disaster.
I will update this thread if I find a solution. Contacting the dev sounds like a plausible idea, going to look into that now.
same situation here.. ill apreciate if you post the solution when you find it! thanks.

Hard Bricked SGP 4.0 (YP-G1CWY/XAA)

Well in my evil experimenting ways, I managed to hard brick my SGP 4.0 (YP-G1CWY/XAA)... well at least I think it is hard bricked.
Symptoms...
* The unit will not power on at all. (even with a fully charged battery)
* Completely black screen
* Holding the Power button for a whole minute does nothing.
* Holding Power Button + Volume Up or Down for a whole minute do nothing.
* Plugging it into a USB port (or a Wall-Adapter) does nothing. Doesn't even show a battery icon. I don't even think the unit is even getting warm.
I suspect this is a full brick. I am unsure what my options are at this point. I heard that something called a USB JIG might fix this problem, but I don't know if it will. I am unsure if this USB JIG device is compatible with my particular device. (YP-G1CWY/XAA)
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you.

so i have your device. i ordered one and am going to receive it hopefully tomorrow. my friend has it he just needs to give it to me. so i can tell you if it works. ill send you a link to which one i bought and if it works ill let you know so you can invest in it.
That would be great! Please let me know. =)
Well I now know why my device hard bricked. I was trying to use Odin 1.8.5 to flash a rom (the one under G1UEKI8) that I downloaded from this page....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531850
... and apparently I didn't know that it had a boot loader inside of it. (sbl.bin) When I flashed the rom, it also flashed the bootloader as well, causing it to brick. Honestly, I'm kinda suprised that it did brick. The ROM should have been for my device. I checked the model numbers n' everything, yet it still bricked.
Is there anyway we can put a warning out about this particular ROM?
I actually flashed that same ROM and my device booted up but the touch screen don't work that's why I had to get the jig

Same exact thing happened to me. I dont think there is a fix since i spent countless hours installing ubuntu and trying to use the ressurectore. Since the pc doesnt even detect it i gave up. I took it to best buy no questions asked they returned all the money and insurance money to. I decided to get a ipod touch instead and wait for the galaxy player 4.2 . Well you would better be off returning it for a new one.

shoulda waited until i had news on the jig. if i can get it into download mode then im sure i can fix it. patience is a virtue.
Ok as you have saw sbl.bin isn't the only bootloader file. As boot.bin, sbl.bin and param.lfs are the bootloader files, they are NECESSARY to a full device restore. I have tried it with my device and it does work. But as I said if you are here for just a upgrade or a back to stock DO NOT FLASH IT. mime can test it when his jig will come in. (if he wants.)
Btw the bootloader files are from Klin1344 and he does have a US player.

Confirmed! the jig works. now on to test the full recovery
---------- Post added at 04:21 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:10 AM ----------
oficially messed up my device. wont turn on and jig doesnt even work. no button combos work.
Okay. So let me get this clear. You had a completely dead Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 (YP-G1CWY/XAA). Dead meaning...
... there was a completely black screen
... Nothing you did made the screen turn on
... plugging the USB charger did nothing, (not even a battery icon)
... but plugging in this JIG actually got you to a download screen? If so... THIS IS AWESOME!
It was not completely dead. It dead now. Lol. The touch screen didnt work so I could t get o download mode. Used the jig it worked. Flashed full recovery and its dead now jig won't wok

I'm a noob (and I watched the video just a while ago) and I'm pretty sad to make my first XDA developers' forum post with an embarrassing failure post. The symptoms I'm having with my 2 days new YP-G1CWY/XAA are exactly the same as the OP's. I'm just trying to leave my record of what and how it happened.
- Encouraged by my success of installing CM7 on a Galaxy Player 5.0 US by following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540255 , I decided to install CM7 on a Galaxy Player 4.0 US by following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527576 .
- Steve's kernel installed well (followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377771 ). Then proceeded to install the ROM using the recovery mode. This installation completed well (at least it said so).
- However, it showed the boot-loop phenomenon. I tried to reinstall the ROM again using the same instruction, but didn't help. So I thought I should try a full recovery by following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531850 . I believe I used the corect .pit file and the correct .tar.md5 file (G1UEKI8).
- Now I have a fully bricked Galaxy Player 4.0 US, leaving only a battery that effectively cost $180.
- I tried to use the unbrickable resurrector by AdamOutler (following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369799 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386669 <-- this one is titled for Gal Player 5.0), but neither worked at all. I used a separate machine (an old PC that runs Ubuntu just well), and I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence, but just plugging in the bricked GP 4.0 to this Ubuntu box and trying the unbrickable resurrector crashed the Ubuntu box several times and now the Ubuntu box doesn't boot up!
I think the post "[STOCK ROM] Full Recovery For Samsung Galaxy Player/S Wifi 4.0" ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531850 ) should be removed or marked with a very strong warning. In that post, I don't see any reply reporting a success, but only reports of bricked players.
Hopefully someone comes up with a magical solution, or if I can learn how to tackle this with some other experienced developers' help, I'd be more than happy to try it... Thanks anyway to all community members for showing how to do all these.

I think that it would work without the bootloaders because all the partitions are pulled directly from the device and can be flashed. Besides, if you don't flash bootloaders, the worst that could happen is just a soft-brick, which can be recovered.

Maybe but if someone is coming from CM7, it can be different. I think I'll put a last link, if it's dont work by then I'll leave US support.
