Any way to use alternative launcher as default? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Meaning.....like getting launcher pro to run as default, while stock twiz DOESN'T run in background.
Make launcher pro run in background the way that twiz does...so it doesn't take up any extra ram in task manager.
Anyone know if this is possible?

When you launch the launcher of your choice through hitting home you'll get a dialog box. Check the one you want. Go to titanium and freeze the launcher you don't use.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

But that'll still run that launcher on top of twiz. You'll still see that launcher in task manager. What I'm asking is if someone can make a specific launcher run the way twiz does. Kinda like the way these non twiz roms run aosp froyo/gb launchers

I'm hoping for solutions, not suggestions on new roms...I'm happy with bionix v. Not gonna change roms till there's a stable gb release from team whiskey.
I'm just wondering how devs are able to apply the aosp launcher to run in the background, and if this is possible with launcher pro instead.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

If you have launcher pro installed just use root explorer to delete the touchwiz from the system/app folder.

That wasn't a suggestion tbh, it was a solution.
Getting a ROM with no TouchWiz will completely solve all your issues with this...
Also.. since you have bionix v... did you get the touchwiz one? just flash the one without it... same look, same feel, just no touchwiz.

It's not that I wanna remove touchwiz. I just want launcher pro to run in background the way touchwiz does.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Wouldn't selecting launcher pro as default when you click home work justl ike that??

Run in background....meaning it doesn't show up in task manager. Like touchwiz.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Oh...
Its in task manager no matter what u do... U cant remove it from that

Yes delete Touch Jizz uh i mean touch whiz is the best solution

If you freeze it in titanium it wont show or run in background. Because it essentially isn't recognized as an installed app for practical purposes. For example I have launcher pro and touchwiz installed but I use dxtop. I don't want to get rid of the others, I have an wp7 setup I'm working on in lp. But I have them both frozen, and they don't show up in task manager.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

[Q] Bionix 1.2.1?

Hey guys I'm running Bionix V right now but I'm going to update to V 1.2.1.
So I'm wondering what the differences are between the 'Gingerbread' and the 'Touchwiz' editions? And in your opinions which is better and why?
I would just flash both of them to find out myself but I hate having to import my contacts, apps, sms/mms, and other things individually everytime. Unless you know of an app that makes it quick and easy to do all at once.
If someone could explain the differences I think I could make the right choice the first time
Thanks
Edit:
Also I've been hearing good/maybe bad things about V 1.2.1
Should users upgrade or stay with V? I'll keep you posted when I upgrade I've been a little busy lately
The difference is how the phone looks. When you hit the home button, your desktop, or launcher, has icons, widgets, etc.
The gingerbread one looks like standard, non themed gingerbread.
TouchWiz looks more like your vibrant did out of the box. I personally find it incredibly ugly so I prefer the gingerbread theme.

Yes, I have been. I really don't think it matters which one you install if you're planning on installing a 3rd party launcher, anyway.

Oh really the only difference between the touchwiz and gingerbread is the launcher?
And how customizable are each of them and maybe I wouldn't need a third party launcher?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The only advantage I can think of for using touchwiz is that it comes with the Samsung apps installed as well.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
That's what I want to get rid of. All the apps like mobileTV, amazon, kindle, all the bloatware.
So gingerbread is the way I should go?

I'm not sure if it comes with the bloatware, but it would come with the Samsung widgets that are available using TouchWiz. (One example is the "Friends" widget that updates facebook and twitter)
But if you're planning on using LauncherPro or any other launcher, all of this is moot anyway. I'd recommend the Gingerbread version because I like the notification bar and stock android is so much better looking than TouchWiz in every aspect.
EDIT: You asked earlier how to import contacts and things; you should sync them with Google as it makes the transition between ROMs seamless. Also, Titanium Backup can backup and restore all of your apps and data. (This excludes SMS). Finally, I use SMS backup to backup all of my texts/MMS to gmail for safekeeping
Thanks wearmaize
I'll go with gingerbread. I use sms and titanium backup they work great.
But last time I synced with google it didn't save all my contacts when I flashed so I don't know if somethings wrong or I'm doing it wrong

I have been hearing conflicting posts about the new Bionix version...I think i'll just stick with V

Next time you sync with google, check your contacts online using a computer to make sure they're all there.
As for Bionix, I'd recommend v 1.2 or v 1.2.1. I find v 1.2 to be the most stable, but I've only been on v 1.2.1 for a day so I can't really say for sure. Both are great.

Why is ADW launcher laggy?

Well I love the 4d drawer but it is really laggy and looks and feels like im running it on a nexus one
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If you had that many on your G1, to be fair they weren't on the phone... they were on your EXT partition of your sd.
Also, the Vibrant has more than enough memory, so that is not the problem.
what launcher are you using? Using a task killer? what else are you doing?
Mine is ultra zippy... no TK, using ADW EX. You are not restoring system apps, or apps that were included in the rom are you?

Have launcherpro because adwex is laggy on the 4d drawer and no I have restored user apps or the remaining ones lol
I have axura and tried many roms

You have to keep track of how many of your apps run in the background, use background data, or both.
not everyone needs a task killer, but generally speaking, people who have large amounts of apps are eventually going to need one. Only because, statistically i would guess probably 30% or so of the third party apps you have installed stay running in the background. therefore, potentially slowing down your phone by chewing up RAM, while also consuming more battery.
when it comes down to it, this is a RAM issue, not a memory issue. i have a lot of third party apps as well. a lot of them like to open on there own and try to run in the background.....not happening. I use a healthy combination of a conventional task killer, auto-ram optimizer, and autostarts. it may SOUND like a lot, but each one of those does a specific job that helps me control my apps and what they do.
I have that overstock kernel that has more ram
Let me see how a taskiller does

With 4d launcher and a lot of apps?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I get lag with both ADW EX and the standalone version when I have scrolling of wallpaper enabled. Once I turn that feature off, it goes to be as smooth as LauncherPro. Another problem with ADW EX is that with caching turned off, you get color banding in some widgets (facebook, twittet, etc) - LP handles all widgets fine, no color banding whatsoever. ADW EX on the other hand has lots of themes to offer, I get to choose icons for any of my apps on the go.
I'm gonna try the no wallpaper scrolling so thanks!

4D app drawer is a bit slow compared to Launcher Pro...it speeds up with some use, but overall I prefer the vertical new drawer due to the speed of the 4D option.
Edit: turned off transparency and all is fine
How do oyou turn off transparency
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I had to turn it on, it's off by default...app drawer options -> background color
On color selection screen make sure the bottom slider labeled "alpha" is slid all the way to the right.

Don't use 4D Drawer
I use ADW Launcher without 4d drawer and it works like butter. But 4d drawer needs more resources. I have LG Optimus Net with CyanogenMod 7.2, ES Task Manager and it has a bit to non lag with 4d drawer. Try a newer version of ADW Launcher. Hope it helps

How do I switch launchers?
Thank you for taking my question.

You get one from the market, either paid or free. Some examples... go launcher, adw launcher. Once installed, press the home button and you get two options.. Tw launcher or the one you just installed, make the one you installed default.
Then that's it. Though you might want to disable the tw launcher from an app like titanium backup.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
Oh I see now. Once you pick a launcher to launch by default I don't know how to get that little pop up back... but.. I know that when a launcher updates you get that little pop up back. It happened to my dad, he was stuck like that for a day when it updated automatically on him, I had to set his launcher to a default again.
dunno if you're up for re-installing one?? or putting another one to get that little pop up back?

Go into Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, select the launcher you are currently using then select the Clear Defaults button. You shoud get prompted to select a launcher when you press the home button.
Download the App homeswitcher if you want to have and use multiple Launchers. You can easily switch between ADW, LPP, ADW Ex, and other stuff on the fly.
try downloading home switcher for froyo, ive been using it forever and it still works

[Q] Lock Apex Launcher into memory?

Apex Launcher seems to reload/redraw far too often whenever returning to the home screen. Can I make it persistnant or lock it into memory? (Preferably without using V6 supercharger)

Did you clear defult tw launcher?....I'm using adwex make aure its defult..and stop or freeze home launcher shouldn't have any issues after that..
Thanks for the response. Yes, default is cleared and TW Launcher is frozen. I'm only using Apex. I'll return to the home screen via the home button and my widgets take a few seconds to reload and the app drawer has to load as well. I was hoping there was a way to just keep it locked in memory.

If you are familiar with build prop tweaks this will lock it in...
ro.home_app_adj=1 -*Forces the launcher to stay in memory. This could slow down the front app, but allow for quicker app switching.
Research ....and see.....

I have had a bit of luck actually with using the bulletproof apps option in the V6 script. Once installed, run the bulletproof option and enter "anddoes" which is what apex is listed as then hit enter. It works on GB and on ICS but you have to go into to the data directory in script manager (assuming you have browse as root selected in config) and have the bulletproof script run on boot. So far (unless it's placebo lol) I have seen an improvement. I hope this helps other out!

Touchwiz Widgets on CM9

I wanna use the stock time/date and weather widgets on hotwires CM9, is this possible?
I've tried and I don't think it's possible, they're system apps for touchwiz so they can't really be copied over to another rom, there are many close alternatives in the market though
