Hey everyone,
Searched for an hour about this and read tons of posts that talked about Droid phones and some others, but nothing that seemed to apply to mine.
I am wondering if it is possible to tether my old Samsung Hue phone to my G tablet? I live pretty far out into the country, and this is the best way I have to get internet access. The Hue EVDO connection is always pretty fast and much better than the Hughesnet satellite connection I had before.
Is it something that can be done? If so, please let me know which ROM would be best for this application.

I have a Tilt2 running windows mobile 6.5 and have tethered successfully using a tethering program found in the tilt2 section of xda.

Samsung Hue is not a smartphone. Not going to be able to WiFi tethering.
Only going to be able to do USB tethering. While the G-Tab can act as a USB host, I don't know if it has all of the kernel modules and networking components necessary to do this. (What basically amounts to dial up networking)
You might consider getting a MiFi type device from your carrier (Alltel? Now Verizon?). Then you could do WiFI tethering through EvDo that way.
Same here - I want to tether using my Cricket Samsung Messager Touch via DUN when mobile. I know it can be done cause we mess with cellular connecting devices (GSM - at&t) at work, but I have no knowledge of the inner workings of linux/android, or the dial-up scripts needed for US-Cellular/Cricket.
Add my name to the list! I want to do Bluetooth tethering so when I'm on the road I can use my phones 3G service to get internet on my tablet.

I live in uni accomodation, and unfortunately WiFi routers will not work in the rooms.
Is there any way of using my rooted GSM Hero as a USB WiFi Adaptor from my PC?
Ie: share my PC's internet over WiFi using the Hero connected via USB so I can wirelessly connect with stuff like my DSi and PSP.
There's an official Nintendo WiFi USB dongle that does this job, so I'm hoping there's also a way for the Hero to do it. I've used the PDAnet app for my Hero for USB tethering that basically is the exact reverse of what I want (it receives WiFi on the hero, shares it to PC).
Anyone know how to do this?

Unless it has been written with a great deal of flexibility in mind, I doubt it. While wifi tether will let the OP connect his handheld consoles to his Hero, I suspect they'll be hard coded to forward this traffic over the GSM interface, whereas what I think the OP is after is the ability to forward the traffic over usb to his PC which I assume has a cabled connection to his uni network.
What s/he needs is simultaneous wifi & usb tethering with the abilty to route between the two. I've not come across anyone doing this before, though it's clearly just a matter of having the right software for the job. Not a trivial exercise to write it, alas.
The best chance would probably be if the author of the wifi tether app is still active & would be interested in adding this functionality to their existing app.

Once of us has misread the OP. I took the OP's PC to have no wifi connection.

It's only just occurred to me to ask, why don't wifi routers work? Is it a matter of rules & regulations? Otherwise I'm somewhat confused.
If it is simply a matter that the only equipment you're allowed to connect directly to the network is a PC you register with the sys admins, I'd be inclined to stick a second network card in the PC (assuming your uni connection is via the primary ethernet port) & use this to connect to your (existing?) wifi router which you use purely as a wifi access point. That'd cost you less than a fiver, assuming you already have a wifi router or access point.
I would stick to the rules however. Unless you're sure you know what you're doing they might spot attempts to connect disallowed equipment from the resulting traffic.

Is there a way to tether the Thunderbolt with the MBR1200 or any type of Cradlepoint router? I saw on Cradlepoint's forums the Incredible and Blackberries were not officially supported but would work and that almost all Android devices should work as well.
Why not root and use a wireless tether app? That way you don't need a router
I am rooted and have the wireless tether app. I was hoping to be able to use my TB to connect my xbox to live without having to use internet connection sharing on my pc.
Another option would be to get a WiFi antenna for your xbox.

Trying to hook up to evo here as well.
I know it's ndis device just like the mogul and ps2 were. I don't know why they are able to but the evo and the sister models aren't working on it. Specially since evo has been out a year. if they need a ata diagnostic to see the activation lines I'd be more then willling to do one and copy the info to them.
HTC Thunderbolt w/ Cradlepoint MBR1200
I own a Cradlepoint MBR 1200 and was thinking about purchasing an HTC Thunderbolt to connect to this router so I could have unlimited 4G data. Is it possible to do this. I have not been able to get a clear answer.
I don't have 4G, but I will try to hook my T-bolt up to my MBR1000 later today and let you know what happens.
Subscribed. I have one of these at work that I have been working with. When connected to USB it cannot obtain an connection. It's like you need to edit modem settings or something. Of course if you back fed it into a PC in the WAN port you might be able to set up an outgoing connection.

I used Internet connection sharing on a pc and plugged the Ethernet cable into the wan port and it worked that way. I also bought a cheap wireless bridge and connected my Thunderbolt to it using the rooted wireless tether app so that I wouldn't have to have a computer always on to use the Thunderbolt's connection. It does seem that the problem with connecting it does have to do with the MBR not recognizing it but the MBR doesn't seem to recognize it is even plugged in, I read on Cradlepoint's site how to connect a Incredible to the router, but the Thunderbolt does not have the same connection choice as the Incredible does. If someone could figure out the difference between the connection types it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to make a app for this http://blog.cradlepoint.com/an-android-powered-cradlepoint-router.

I've been reading in the gadget press for the past week about how carriers in the states are blocking tethering apps through the marketplace.
I'm looking to upgrade my phone this week to an S2 and was just wondering what the options are with tethering? Never had an Android phone before so not sure if it's likely to be a built in feature as well as an alternative download through the market. My old HD2 had it as a feature of the software on Win 6.5.
Anyone in the uk tethering their phones yet?
It's built right into Android. Been using the wireless hotspot feature all week so I can sit out in the sun and do some work

A recent version of Android introduced WiFi sharing, so you can turn your phone into a WiFI hot-spot and it'll route to your 3G connection.
Works like a treat, and seems far snappier than my old WinMo 6 with Bluetooth and Internet Sharing.

For those of us with honeycomb tablets, you may want to have data everywhere you go on it. But you don't want to hack your phone, cause you just got it on a two year contract. And the carrier price is WAY to expensive, and not unlimited. This is the problem my uncle had when we gave him an Android tablet. With his Evo 4G, he should have data everywhere he goes, and that is where this app comes in.
Advantages.
Its Bluetooth, so no rooting required, if both devices have Bluetooth that is *cough* kindle fire doesn't *cough*
Since its Bluetooth, it doesn't show up to every wifi device within 30 feet of you, and is secured to only work with properly setup devices
Unlike PdaNet for computer tethering, this one is completely free (so is hotspot, but that needs root)
Disadvantages
Bluetooth isn't the fastest method for tethering, but since wifi hotspot is slower than the data you get using the phone, it works out to be about the same. Still a factor though
You need to have data on both devices to get the app in the first place.
It is required of you to set a proxy in order to use this (the proxy is coming from your phone, your data isn't being watched by this app, just Sprint and Carrier IQ )
You need to clear this proxy in order to use normal wifi every time, which can be tedious

I can confirm this works with the Evo Shift, and Evo 4G as servers, and with the Acer Iconia Tab a100 as the client.

I want to tether my rooted NT to my non-rooted droid 3 phone to provide 3g internet access when I'm not around a wifi connection using a USB cable connecting the two (I have a USB female to male micro USB adapter to connect the nook cable to the phone). I would prefer not to root my phone and not use the mobile hotspot or pay verizon an extra $30/mo, etc. I have used Easy Tether for my phone and laptop previously and it has worked well. I've looked at pdanet and pdanet tablet, but it wants to use bluetooth which has not been enabled on the NT yet. Is there any way to even do this yet until the USB hosting is enabled on the NT?
This is not the answer you are looking for, but I have been using WiFi tethering from my T-Mobile MyTouch 4G (with CM7) for a few days now.
If you could tether via USB and not get in trouble with VZ, I don't see why you couldn't do the same via WiFi. Since you would be tethering to another Android device instead of to a laptop, I wouldn't think that even if VZ is checking the data going through the phone, they would notice anything all that different, since both devices are running Gingerbread.
You'd have to put a WiFi tethering app on the Droid, which may require you to root. My MyTouch 4G came with WiFi Tethering capability from the get-go, so perhaps you can find a non-root WiFi app to let you do it.
wifi tethering works but I dont think USB will because B and N didnt put the drivers for the nook to recognize another android device... or rather any device except a computer through USB. They stripped many things out of this Android OS

I was able to do so but I had to play with the configurations of the phone (not root it) since it was a connection thing and not touching the OS on the phone. I work for the company so I have access on how to do so. However that being said I deactivated which I will explain below.

Carriers can tell the difference on what is using what. This is why AT&T surprised their customers by billing them for tethering usage on their network. It has nothing to do with whether both devices are Gingerbread or not but how the traffic is moving on the network. It simply requires a sniffer. Also, I removed my phone fix when I found out that Verizon is also planning on doing the same thing AT&T has already done; wouldn't be good if they discovered many of their employees are doing this. The two carriers normally follow suit. I'm just surprised that both have taken so long to respond since they are loosing revenue. I think it's a ridiculous charge and customers shouldn't have to pay for the service that was already built in. If the user has a plan then it should be based on their data plan not on how they are using on connecting nodes to it.
If you look in the forums there is a special driver that has been ported over from the Nook Color and rewritten for the tablet. It allows for an Ad-hoc or device to device connection via wifi. That would solve the problem with the Wifi issue. Be careful however because it is an advanced procedure requiring you to be rooted and install root explorer and copy over the new wifi driver...
