Root atrix with Mac OS X? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone accomplished this?
If so, elaborate.
Thanks,

Its possible to do it with adb and the command line. Are you familar with using one?

Im very familiar with my mac. I've only used terminal twice to run some java code I wrote.

i think he meant ADB and the command line

Ok, so the extent of my knowledge, as it pertains to ADB and terminal, is limited. I can search my mac for files using terminal. Thats it..

I too would appreciate someone to break it down for a n00b such as myself. I don't have a copy of windows so if there is a way without bootcamp that would be awesome!

I've ported DG's aRoot script to a mac form, but I've never done anything like this before so at the moment I'm waiting him to respond to a PM asking permission to post it.
I thought I remembered him saying somewhere that he gave public permission to use the script, but I've been unable to find it. If anyone can find me this link, I'll post it, otherwise I will as soon as I get DG's blessing (assuming he gives it).

Would you be able to use VMware Fusion for something like this - with windows installed? I was about to try that until I read this thread. May have dodged a bullet there. I've been reading this forum for weeks, very informative. Learnin' a bunch.
Cheers.

[Q] Setting up the Android SDK in Ubuntu...

Ok, I'm sure this is been asked before and I'm sure there's references somewhere...I've looked for a couple of days and found what should be answers, but nothing is working like the instructions I've seen...
Here's the simple question; How do I get the Android SDK and Java JDK setup in Ubuntu? I've tried the sudo commands to get the JDK to install, not working for me (as Ubuntu tells me it can't find the files I'm looking for). I've tried moving the SDK into the Root Folder (in the File System area itself), don't have permissions even though I'm logged in as the administrator. I've tried getting the SDK Manager to run through Terminal (home/android-sdk-xxxxx_xxxx/tools/android), can't find the file in terminal, but it's there in the file system exactly where I'm pointing it to.
I'm very new to Linux, but if I'm going to do things that I want to do, I'm going to have to learn. For the most part, I'm prepared to read whatever I need to in order to learn from this, but I also know when I need to ask for some help here. It seems like every command shown to get this started is just not working in the partition I have setup for this. If anyone can help get me started, I'm sure I can pick the rest up along the way!
Thanks in advance!

I think you could possibly use part of the EasyDev-v6 script in the Development and just cut out everything after installing prerequesites. It probably installs the JDK and the SDK among everything else, and it probably wouldn't hurt with the other things that installs, too. Just cut out everything after the prerequesites (it's just a regular text file but it'll be easier to edit in Ubuntu with OpenOffice).
Also check out http://maketecheasier.com/install-android-sdk-in-ubuntu-karmic/2010/01/11. As far as I know it worked when I tried it.

[Q] Flashing on Aria

Hello guys anD GIRLs. semi-N00B here. tehehe. I say semi because I spent the last week learning evvvverything i could about "rootin'" my Area. phew, there's a lot to learn ... but I like to be fairly sure of how things work before I attempt nething./ I just have 1one question, before I do this to my DEVice... How do I flash a rom to my phone if the Aria doesn't support flash? Is there a guide to modifying flash lite for this? I can't find it.
Thanks in advance. Luv yas.
WTF NOOOOB!! YOU POSTED IN THE WRONG SECTION!! UGH. THIS SHOULD FREAKING BE POSTED IN DEVELOPMENT...i swear..noobs..anyways on a lighter note
welcome to the wonderful world of android!! im pretty new myself but have been trying to do this too. ive been reading various wikis and have come up with this(beware i am about to attempt this this weekend myself)
1)you need to be on froyo 2.2 (att official)
2)you need to pull out flashlite.apk using the android sdk
3)you need to decompile flashlite.apk with baksmali
4)you need to delete the flash files and replace them with romflash.txt
5)recompile with smali and rename it to romflash.apk
6)push it with adb
7)FLASH ROMS AND SCORE!!!!
good luck!! and hope to see moar of u around the forums!
YAY ROM FLASHERZ
ps. does anyone know what cm7 is? can you explain it to me? the guides arent telling me enough...
ps.s to the OP-heres a wonderful guide if smali is to complicated. this tool can help you decompile flash lite and works wonders!!
miui-au. co m/ add-ons/ apktool/(cant post links yet..sorr)
I'm not sure what Megamansrighthandman is talking about, but it isn't correct.
It sounds like both of you are confused about the use of the word "flash". Be careful with the terminology. When someone talks about "flashing a ROM", that simply means installing a ROM. It has nothing to do with Adobe Flash or HTC's Flash Lite. I understand the confusion though. I hope this clears things up.
The process for setting up your phone to be able to install custom ROMs basically breaks down to these steps:
1) "Root" the phone. This is accomplished by using the Unrevoked tool from a computer. There is more information about this in the other sections of this forum. This can only be done on phones that do NOT have the official Android 2.2 update installed. If you have 2.2, you can't root without special hardware.
2) Once "rooted", you can download ROM files and install them through the Clockwork recovery. Installing a ROM is generally referred to as "flashing" (there is a reason it is called this, but it has nothing to do with Adobe Flash).
Wait!! I need 2.1 not 2.2?? I had 2.1 but updated because megamanstightgland told me too. can I still use his methode, since i started already? i was at step 2 and didnt know how to pull out nething (im a girl so i never had to do that b4 tehehe) i didnt want too ask two many noob questions, so i ended up to googling searching his steps to figure out how to do some of them. (i think he meant abd not sdk) here's what I did after updating to 2.2....
[email protected]:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for luvsmyBfdick:
[email protected]:/home/luvsmyBfdick# sh abd pull flashlite.apk
sh: Can't open abd
[email protected]:/home/luvsmyBfdick# dm -f pull abd out -m flashlite.apk /system/data
dm: command not found
[email protected]:/home/luvsmyBfdick# chmod -v remount adb pull* flashlite.apk /homo/user/system
chmod: invalid mode: `remount'
Try `chmod --help' for more information.
[email protected]:/home/luvsmyBfdick# --help
--help: command not found
[email protected]:/home/luvsmyBfdick# -x <85> /tools/win/usb drivers -r/w flashlite.apk
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `85'
Do you think there is a problem with my permission? I have a flash drive (not adobe) with updated permissions on it, but i canot currently find it.
ps. it's not like i wasnt prepare. i installed linux yesterday in my computer cause i read it make this easier... just trying to surprise my boyfriend with a rooted area for his birthday sunday. thanks so much for the help so far guys. your great!
now im readin that i have to be in root on my phone, not just my computer, to do meganmanswhitechesttanned's methode. i really need to help with one of you geeks. ;(

Development [Question/Request or something]

Disclaimer: Before the 'Wrong section police' goes all Nazi on me, I wanted to say that I realize this MAY be in the wrong section but I wasn't sure since this has to do with actual development.
Anyway, question is.. we now have 4 great ways to root using a computer. (See below for those threads.)
Is it possible to maybe make an app that you can just run off your phone to root, without the use of a computer? I understand ADB is needed but doesn't "Terminal Emulator" work just as good over the phone?
If not, can someone be bothered to explain as to why it would not work?

I don't think it will work because once you lose your temp root you won't have the permissions needed to use the terminal emulator.

Have you checked out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1159354
It's a temp root that sticks!
But either way, you answered my question. I was not aware that you need Root to be able to use "Terminal Emulator".
Thanks amigo.

um i doubt you do need root... you will be in shell as $... in theory you could just get a windows script and rename the commands... theyll probably say 'shell' within the command... which would be bad since youd be IN a shell... and maybe run it? as for the files that you normally ADB push, you can store them in /vendor/bin and it will stick after reboot. so make the pathin as /vendor/bin instead of /data/temp or w/e it is... you will have had to've ADB pushed the files the first time tho. the rest can be scripted... im sure of it. then again... idk if the app has built-in ADB.. 3rd party app maybe?

Root method thru ADB with a Mac-Please

Can someone please list the correct steps line by line for us peeps with Mac computers. Maybe a stickie? Please. P.S. sorry if this was already posted somewhere but I could not find one relating to the MoPho.
Are you stuck anywhere in particular? Do you know how to use ADB? The only difference between windows and OSX when executing adb commands is needing to add ./ before adb
Ive used ADB back in the day to root the HTC Hero and knew there was that extra command to put but couldnt remember what it was. What u put ./ was what I forgot.
I rooted my photon from my mac and didn't need to use any special commands. I found a post online that explained how to create a hidden profile with a text document to the location of ADB on my comp and now when i go to terminal i don't need to CD to anything i just type adb and the command and it works like a charm i just copy pasted the commands from here into terminal.

[Q] Trying to install Ubuntu. Getting permission errors

Hey all. i'm following the post here but i'm getting some errors. Looks like other people are getting them as well but I ahven't seen a viable solution yet.
Anyway, I've found the linux folder through terminal (/mnt/sdcard/linux), but get permission denied errors all over the place when i sh install.sh. I apparently can't access all the places on my phone when I connect it to my PC, so I can't move the folder to my phone even though through windows, that's where I "am" when I put it there.
Does anyone know how I can get this working? Or if there's another way to get Ubuntu on here?
Thanks
Bump
Check out our development dev only section for dev discussions. They are working on making it for our phone. That guide you linked won't work with any phone like they claim.
