4G Switch? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Checked out a few videos and so far everyone is saying they have not found a way to turn off LTE.
Anyone working on something yet? I travel into area's that are still 3G and I honestly would not like having it searching when there isn't a strong signal

As of now now, no "quick switch" for turning off 4G/LTE. Although it is still possible.
On your phone dial pad type *#*#4636#*#* Phone information > Change radio from CDMA/EVDO/LTE to CDMA auto. Then select turn off radio. Then turn radio back on.
As soon as root is achieved I am sure there will be a quicker way.

does this reset every time the phone does? I'm guessing that it switches to 3g when in 3g coverage? My phone arrives tomorrow but this is very important to me as I commute 2 hours into nyc for my job so half my trip is going to be in 4g while half the trip and me at home will be in 3g.

It should stay upon reset. I don't have my TBolt yet so not positive.

This was one of the first things i looked for when i picked mine up as my battery was screaming down

Cannot stay on 3G or HSPDA

I'm in a 3 Vibrant household. The other two phones stay connected to 3G all day. Both have stock ROMs. 1 is on stock Eclair (JI6) and the other has the stock Kies upgrade to Froyo. (Actually, during the first attempt to upgrade, Kies softbricked that phone, so I ODIN'ed it back to the JFD image I downloaded from XDA, and then successfully upgraded to stock KA6).
These other phones are my family's. My phone however, seems to be bumped down to EDGE as soon as I use it. In other words, if the phone is just sitting there charging, it indicates it is on the HSPDA network. If I pick it up and start using it, it bumps down to EDGE within a minute. I tried to hold it with my fingertips to avoid the "grip of death" but this does not help. (BTW, I can grip the other phones all day and they stay on 3G. So my fat hands do not seem to be the problem).
My phone has seen just a few ROMS: Bionix, Flagship and now running Trigger 2.5.
I have tried the following modems: JK6, JL5, KA6, KA7, and of course Trigger 2.5 comes with KB1.
I have also done the hardware contact fix (i.e. lift up the copper tabs).
After flashing in different modems and doing the hardware fix, I continue to experience the exact same phenomena.
I am at my wit's end. I DO NOT know what else to try to get the dang thing to stay on 3G or HSPDA. I know I should try going back to stock to see if that helps ... but I am pretty reluctant to go there.
Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Well, not sure if it is where you are at, In places in Hawaii and Very Northern California I only get edge.....But so the sake of argument we will assume the signal is not the issue
Here is a way to do some testing :
I use this when i want to get 850wcdma (ATT 3g) it does work for that
Dial: *#*#197328640#*#*
Click [1] debug screen
Click [8] phone control
Click [7] network control
Click [2] band selection
This is where you make a change, default setting is [1] automatic,
Which means it chooses automatically between gsm/cdma (Edge vs 3g).
So we are going to change this and set it to wcdma band which is 3g.
Click [2] wcdma band
Click [1] wcdma all []
Now it should display “select wcdma all bands [*]"
Now on the bottom of your phone, click the menu key, it’s the one next to the home key, now click back, menu again one more time, back one more time, this is just to confirm it set to number 2 wcdma band.
Now click menu key one last time, click end.. and you are done. Now to double verify that the phone is locked into 3g, dial in: *#*#4636#*#*
Then click phone information Then scroll down to “set preferred network type” It should now have listed “wcdma only.” PS, if you tried to do a shortcut, and just set wcdma this way first without doing the lock above, it would just go back to gsm/cdma auto once you exit the screen.
Your phone should now be locked into 3g.
That may help good luck..........
oka1,
Thank you very much for your detailed reply. This sounded very promising. I followed every step of your instructions. The result was that I ended up with no network. The four bars area was replaced with an empty space. Attempts to access the web resulted in message that no network was available.
No biggie. Just went back through the process and set the phone back to the default. And I am now back the EDGE.
Any I too am in Northern California.
Thanks again.
Yeah Northern Cal north of Ukiah nothing but Edge, but then ATT and verizon are the same
Actually, SF Bay Area ... South Bay to be exact.
My prob is that I can get HSPDA ... as long as I leave the phone on my desk connected to the power cord. If I pick it up or move around the house, I lose connection to the 3G network and get downgraded to EDGE. This does NOT happen to the other two Vibrants that we have. They always get 3G.
This may be related to the Grip of Death. But only for my phone.
Well I am in Alameda and I have a similar problem. for what ever reason, If I am in my house the wireless WIFI makes my phone go to edge, go in my backyard, and I have 3g. Now since i am on the second floor, to only thing I can think is my wifi signal messes up my 3g cause in the front on my porch I get edge (13 ft above the street.........so I use wifi at home, but it still really bugs me that in the house I have edge and in the backyard I have 3g....... go figure

[fix] - Help improve standby battery life

I found something a couple days ago that helps the standby battery life on all Android devices, and figured I'd share for those of you who don't know.
I've tested this on a Captivate and an Evo 3D GSM, and both have noticed significant improvement. Normally if I leave my phone unplugged at night, when I wake up I'd be almost dead. Now, I went to sleep at around 60% Battery, woke up and it was only 40%. Not too shabby.
Anyway, what needs to be done:
1. in the dialer, punch in *#*#4636#*#* (You don't have to press send, it will automatically bring you to the next menu)
2. from here, go to "phone information"
3. There is a dropdown menu that says "Set preferred network type". By default this is set to GSM/CDMA auto(PRL), change it to the specific network type you need. I'm with Rogers, so I went WCDMA only. If you have the Sprint version, you'd go CDMA only.
4. Now, on the main screen again, press Menu>Select Radio Band
5. Select the appropriate band for your location. In Canada, USA is the same band, so I went with this. The options are Automatic, Euro, USA, Japan, AUS, AUS2
6. Exit this screen and use your phone as you usually do now. This won't affect battey usage while actually using it for calls, browsing, etc. But in standby mode it does increase your battery life.
Hope that can help at least a couple people.
How interesting. I remember this setting for the EVO 4G. But, I only drop a few % in standby mode and that's overnight..
I just took a peek first to see. I have two questions.
(1) What's the difference between "CDMA only" and "CDMA auto (PRL)"? Mine was set to the latter.
(2) I pressed menu on both the main screen and under "Phone information". My phone has no selection for "Radio Band".
Mike
1. Not sure. I'd assume cdma only will only care about cdma vs other types of signal. The 3d only has thecdma radio so cdma only would be the way to go for you, I suppose this option is here for dual cdma/hspa phones. There must be some background processes running when you have it in auto mode.
2. No idea here. Perhaps this isn't an option on cdma phones? Doesn't make much sense though. I tested this on my 3d,, captivate and a nexus a, all were hspa phones, but it was there for all of then

Odd..
Must be something unique to GSM phones only. Sorry guys. However, I'd imagine setting it to CDMA only would help a bit as well.
Did this on Sprint Evo3D yesterday, there is no option for the radio. Also just going CDMA only still have my standby drain at 39%..
it should be noted OP that this will only work for GSM 3d because CDMA 3d (Sprint) doesnt allow radio band changes since their is no other frequency to receive service from a different carrier. The only two US CDMA providers Verizon and Sprint use the exact same frequency for 3G and 1X which is why CDMA phones are not world phones. Good info though too bad it doesn't apply for the majority of 3d owners
I dialed ##3282# entered msl code and was able to see the setting freeza mentioned.

[Q] 4G drops to 1X

I recently upgraded from the Incredible to the Rezound and find that when 4G not available, the signal drops down to 1X. Not only that, it seems to stay in 1X even when 4G is available. How can I get the phone to drop to 3G when 4G not available? The Incredible ran in 3G in the same areas that the Rezound drops to 1X. What do I have to set to get it into 3G?
Thanks for help.
both my GF and I have been having trouble with this on both our phones... We both live and work in 4G coverage, pretty strong coverage too. Yet we both see 4g drop out to 3g or 1x. Its very random, and I've had it happen right in the middle of browsing the web. (All of a sudden a page takes forever to load or doesnt and the phone acts like it has no data connection, I go to the home screen and see that I am all of a sudden on 1x..)
I recently read an article that talked about how VZW actually has a pretty major issue they need to resolve pertaining to authentication on the LTE network. I don't know the exact mechanics of it, but basically the authentication fails and you get booted off the LTE network until the phone tries to hop on it again. Right now, the two phones I have personal experiance with do not try very often to get back on and it often takes going into the wireless settings page and selecting mobile networks and going in and out of that screen a couple times, or if it is being stubborn, airplane mode, site for a minute, and then back on. Occasionally I have to reboot the phone.
It really irritated me good last night when I really needed the data connection for GPS navigation because I took a wrong turn in an unfamiliar area..
Sometimes going in and out of airplane mode helps or restart.
I'm not going to say look on the forums. Here is a quote from another thread and linked another thread.
had the same issue and fixed by this.

phone will reboot and you should get 3G back
This changes your network from eHRPD back to EVDO Rev.A. For LTE phone owners, eHRPD causes 3G to die (most of the time anyway) when the LTE network has problems. Get back on normal EVDO and you're good to go.
^ from Jntdroid on another forum (not sure if we're allowed to post to other forums here) I'm not positive on where he got it from, but this is a capability of all HTC 4G phones
I've had occasional issues with being down to 1X, but even that was only during nationwide 4G network issues, definitely get in touch with VZW about that... not that they have enough sense to fix anything *sigh*

Same issue here. Only happens when I go from a 4G area to a 3G area. I end up getting stuck in 1x. The phone switches fine from 3G to 4G. But when going back to a 3G only area, it by-passes 3G and I get 1x.
No toggling helps. I have to reboot to get 3G back. I also tried that fix posted above. It does not help. Called verizon again tonight.
The strange part is before we had that 4G outage a few months ago, the phone would switch just fine. Now it's a pain in the ass.
Sorry it isn't helping. It worked in mine and done exactly the way it told me. Go from 3-4g now without an issue. No 1x like before

Force 4g radio, ignore edge

Hello,
I am coming from an Inspire 4g phone have been using the Not since its release date. I am having a similar issue with my Note that the Inspire had, but I am unable to work-around the issue the way the Inspire did.
My issue is that while my phone has great cell tower signal, my phone drops into Edge connectivity constantly. Prior to my Note upgrade, my Inspire would do the same thing, but I had a couple of work arounds I could do to lock back into 4G (HSPA+).
A) I could reboot the phone and the overwhelming majority of times it would go back to H+.
B) I could turn the mobile data radio off and then back on and again, the majority of the times, it would go back to H+.
C) The fix I used most often was to go into the phone dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*. This brings up a back door to the testing screens and I could access the phone information section. In phone information, I could change the preferred network type and I would change from the default WCDMA preferred to either GSM ONLY or WCDMA ONLY depending on the area I was in. This not only work with near 100% success, it also locked the signal into H+ for longer periods of time.
Now that I have my Note, I have the same issue with the phone dropping to Edge service. However, when I try each of the 3 methods above, including *#*#4636#*#*, my phone stays locked into Edge. I can not get it to change.
I called AT&T about the issue and they explained to me that the phone will lock into the stronger signal, so if Edge is stronger, that is what I will get. I told them about my workaround with my Inspire and they could not give an explanation why it worked with that phone. I did talk them into re-sending the network information to my phone while on the call. They sent the information and while I was sitting still with full bars of signal strength, the phone miraculously popped into 4G service. I asked why it would change from Edge to H+ when they sent the network information since I didn't move to affect the signal and they could give me no explanation.
Does anyone have an idea how to make the Note ignore Edge service if H+ is available? If I can't figure this out, the Note is going back and I will stay with my Inspire 4G for now.
Thanks,
Roger

(I don't have a Note yet but...) Settings- Wireless and Network- Mobile Network- Network Preferences. Maybe you can force it there. Keep in mind this is an LTE phone, and SIM, so a little different than our Inspires.

As stated, this is not available in stock rom nor TPC Note 2, which I am currently running. However, based on what I remember seeing on other Samsung phones, the *#*#4636#*#* feature I reference is supposed to do the same thing.
Thanks for the replies. Looks like the RAT feature is locked. Using the Rogers Radio seems to fix the problem, but breaks video playback at this time.
I found it an other thread, so I don't take any credit for it as someone else posted it, but I have confirmed it works on my Galaxy Note
*#*#197328640#*#* > debug screen > phone control > network control > band selection
You need to do this after each reboot though as it does not stick.
To work around this I have made a contact and only left out the last * in it, so all you do is use that as a speed dial and you are good to go

[Q] LTE problem

My wife and I bought Verizon LG G3s on the same day last month. Lately mine has been dropping from LTE to 3G most of the time. Hers is always LTE. This happens when the phones are in the same location.
IS there anything in the settings that might be causing this problem and is there anything I can do to get back consistent LTE?
My phone does the same. Once it switches to 3g from 4g it has a rough time going back. My wife's g2 doesn't have this problem. Since we can't update our radio's I suggest making airplane mode your best friend.
Do you me toggling airplane mode on and off solves the problem for you?
What I don't get is that after going Airplane mode or turning off Call Data, and then turning it back on again my phone will sync at -93dbm LTE for a little bit, maybe 2 minutes or so, but as soon as it goes to sleep and I wake it up it lands at -103dbm and never back at -93dbm.
I think the radio in these phones has problems.
I don't know if this will help or not but when I bought my G3 "global" mode was default instead of LTE/CDMA.
Try changing it and see if that helps.
Settings
Mobile networks
System select
Network mode
-change global to lte/cdma
Mine is on global. The other choice, LTE, GSM,UMTS is greyed out. However, my phone is on 4gLTE at the moment.
Switched mine from Global to LTE/CDMA and the signal strength jumped to -93dbm but a minute later it was back to -102dbm.
When this issue occurs do you see a SIM icon with a question mark in it? Ive been having an issue where it drops from 4g to LTE and that icon appears, toggling airplane mode or restarting the phone fixes it. Im going to try getting a new SIM next time it occurs, but im definitely worried about getting a replacement phone that is on the "C" software version (no root right now)

No I have not seen a SIM card icon. It's purely a signal issue. I rarely if ever drop out of 4G where I live but I wonder why the signal starts out at something like -93 until the phone goes to sleep and then ends up at a solid -103dbm.
Seems weird.
Power management on the radio might be too aggressive as the phone warms up ?
